16 of 213 Bars & Pubs in New York City

Visited both for lunch and dinner and had good food and lovely friendly relaxed service on both occasions. Great place to watch the football ☺

great food, friendly staff, very convenient. Beer list is a little lacking for a pub, but not awful.

The salmon platter is huge - plenty for a few people to share. The calamari was okay. Good beer on tap. Interesting clientele. Fun bar.

Good beer selection and nice wines also - and they use nice glasses for both. Owners are on site most days and are very friendly and hospitable. There usually is live music on Monday nites Nachos are great and burgers are good.

Found this place as the adjacent meatball place was packed. Very happy with the atmosphere and food. Waitstaff was attentive and friendly though decidedly not Irish. Smallest bathroom in Manhattan! Enjoyed the Irish breakfast. Smelled like stale beer no doubt as this is more of a bar that serves (good) food.

Away from tourists. Native customers. Cordial and patient attention. Tasty food. Prices affordable. Wonderful guiness as every good Irish pub asks. Fishs and Chips, tuna Sandwich, meatloaf com mashed potatoes. All very tasty.

Good value with honest food. The service was freindly and prompt, food was good well cooked and good portions. We had supper here while watching a football game.

My daughter and I enjoyed a late bite recently. We were seated in a small alcove upstairs and we enjoyed watching a hockey game. We split the fried pickles ( tasty) and nachos ( enormous ). Service was friendly and efficient . Would recommend!

This is a British pub type place in the West Side on Amsterdam. There are about 500 other restaurants around, but this one was the only one that was not astronomically priced. At 6 pm on a Saturday evening, this place was so jam packed, we had to sit out on the sidewalk. It was pleasant enough, so that was fine, but can't speak to the ambiance. The food we had was excellent. Fish and Chips were pretty traditional, though a tad greasy, the shepherd's pie was outstanding... very flavorful, and not to saucy. Service was good for NYC standards. Very happening place.

Maybe we should've wondered why this "Irish pub" was empty at the height of lunch hour. But the waitress was friendly enough and the menu looked nice. Despite being one of only two occupied tables in the restaurant the entire time we were there the service from our friendly waitress was terrible. Once she brought our food she spent the rest of the time looking at her phone behind the bar and chatting with a friend sitting at the bar. That's fine since she had few customers but she never glanced our way or came over to see if we needed anything. I had to get up and ask for a second soda. I had to get up and ask for the check. The shepherd's pie was the worst I have ever had. It did not even taste (or look) like shepherd's pie. It tasted like a Mexican burrito. The place is a bit dreary and I don't think there was anything about the decor that suggests it's an Irish pub.

We have gone for a few years now. They are never really crowded and you get great value. Its a pub so you know what you are in for. The food is good. The service is good and the drinks are great. They make a mean bloody mary.

On our return from the museum of natural history, we were looking for a place to chill out, we came across this place. My friends thought it was a church lol. We went and enjoyed very much. Everything was awesome but the bar tender, a skinny guy with beard was rude. We didn't care. It's a good place anyway

This felt like somewhere my Irish nan would have loved. Great food and good service, the shepherd’s pie was amazing. Definitely will try checking out!

This is a real gem. You feel like you’ve stepped into a pub in Dublin. This is an old time bar with a great selection of brews and amazing food. Go there for the Guinness and the shepherd’s pie or chicken pot pie and you’ll be very, very happy. Grab one of the sidewalk tables in the summer and watch the world go by in an unpretentious, friendly atmosphere. Perfection.

Pretty typical pub, with the requisite Guinness, and Smithwicks draws. Also a rather large menu with the usual Irish fare. I tried the "Chicken Curry" on the advice of my waiter. It was good, and as expected, at a good price for NYCity.

We popped in here because it was raining (also because we're Irish) great pub, the barman was so lovely and the Guinness was goooood. Also food was yum. 5 stars for atmosphere & quality.

We called in for a drink after a day of sightseeing and loved the ambience so we stayed for dinner. Very reasonably priced food and fantastic quality. Service was very good without being intrusive. If I was a local I'd be here all the time.

Great pub-like decor and a menu filled with food that you would recognize in the old country. The prices weren't too bad and the food we had was good and hit the spot. The Guinness was good - thick and creamy - just like it should be.

This has an easy going comfortable no pretenses ambiance. I bet it's great in the evening as a place to sit at the bar. We stopped by on a whim needing to get some lunch. I had no plans for anything but a salad! Ha best laid plans....both my husband and I were swayed by the waitress to order the Fish and Chips. They were authentic and fresh served with Tartar Sauce and Malt Vinegar. You get 2 large fillets, and I was so full I couldn't eat my fries, so that's a lot of fish. Someone in an earlier review said they're greasy. That's true, but just a little and that's because they're authentic and they were served piping hot. They were worth a little grease! I recommend grabbing a table next to one of the front open windows, and watch the world go by. As always, photos accompany my reviews!

I am hre now, having beer and Irish coffee. place is very nice close to the subway and centrál park. Definitely would come back for Ice cold stella.

Very chill atmosphere. Stopped in for some drinks after dinner. Great service and the food coming out made us want to eat dinner again.

Absolutely charming location with amazing food. Ambience is wonderful; owner is amazing. Food is delicious. Truly lovely experience .... we’d go again and again....

The Upper West Side in NYC is an incredibly vibrant area of the city to people watch, see the sights and just hang out. One of my favorite spots to do all three is this Irish pub on the corner of 81st and Amsterdam Ave. Great neighborhood atmosphere, terrific drinks and delicious food. The chicken pot pie is sublime. In warm weather, grab a sidewalk table and watch the world stroll by.

Just returned to the UK after a week in NYCUWS. We had our 3 daughters with us (one only 10 months) and the staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating Plus the food was great / all variety of sports on constantly, lovely creamy pint of guinness and generally extremely cosy. Highly recommended!!

Never heard of it, or went there before tonight. Reasonable prices, good food, friendly wait staff, quiet enough for conversation. I'll be back!

We stayed in Amst Av during our stay in NY. So at night walking thr we found out this place. Actually an irish pub, but of course they serve full menus, from sandwiches, to starters, to steaks. We wait a bit too much, probably more than 30min , but we tried all different dishes, portions were huge and satisfied. Easy and chilled place. Nice to try for an informal lunch/dinner/beer with friends

Most pubs along Amsterdam Street in the 70s/80s/90s West side are pretty basic, with minimal furniture, cheap pints, dark and crummy food menus. The St James Gate was a pleasant surprise. Although from the outside, it looked kind of dark with an older crowd, inside it was friendly and boasted an enormous menu with lots of choices-smoked salmon plate with Irish bread, Irish stew, Shepards pie, huge burgers, salads and sandwiches. Not your typical pub menu. We had a hard time making up our minds, but our choices-smoked salmon, Irish stew and huge burger were all delicious. Service was quick and friendly. Draft beer choices were not that great, but often had the same problem in Ireland. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a pub with good food.

We had both dinner and lunch here and the food and service were really good on both occasions. It is an Irish pub that serves no frills hearty food and has a well stocked bar.The staff are really helpful and give you time to choose and then enjoy your food. We had the best and biggest steak we had ever had and would recommend the St James to anyone looking for a nice relaxed place for a drink or food.

Stopped in to watch Soccer match and have a bite and a drink. They were happy to change the TV to the match food was pretty good and good local pub vibe.

Went there after the St. Patrick's Day parade. Had a great time. The corned beef sandwich was delicious.

This is a great place for a drink and comfort food at affordable (for NYC) prices. The staff are lovely and the food is OK, if a little greasy. The portions are HUGE and very filling. Unless you are feeding teenage football players, the shepherd's pie should be shared and some of the grease drained off. Salads are good. One of the few pubs where sports are playing on every television, but there are still quiet nooks if you aren't into the game. The potatoes in the bangers and mash and shepherd's pie appear to made with instant, which is pretty poor for Irish food, and the shepherd's pie needed onions, but still not bad at all. Great beer selection and an excellent cider.

We searched for Pubs in UWS nyc for the July 4th weekend and we chose St James Gate. Great atmosphere and great service. We ordered their burgers and fries. Perfection! Ordered Manhattans and Guinness. Drinks were great. Burgers juicey and made to perfection. Will go back again!

I absolutely love this pub. It's location means that is a great lunch spot for those visiting the Museum of Natural History or Central Park, and also for meeting friends after a day in the city. The Guinness is excellent, better than in many Dublin restaurants, and the menu will be welcomed by any Irish visitors, curry chips for example! The staff are a great crew, and experts in Irish craic. At any time of the day or night, this pub is The Gate to New York - Irish culture.

Had a couple of great meals at St James Gate on Upper West side - staff are very friendly, nice atmosphere there and the food was good - also very good value for New York

This was so good we returned the following evening and it was just as good second time around. The beer was good, range slightly limited but still good. The prices were very competitive for NYC. The staff were lovely and put up with us brits being unable to make up our minds. Great pub, really friendly. Well done

While the food here fits the typical bar food description of "frozen or fried" as well as burgers, this place is simply a gem of Irish friendliness and ambiance, much like our personal experiences on trips to Dublin. Of course here, you can order a beer drink that you should never order in S. Ireland, i.e., a Black and Tan. Lots of fresh beers, a great whiskey and cocktail list, and free wifi, and always friendly service. Yes, let's go again for a coupla pints!

We recently had dinner and drinks here on a Friday at 9 pm. They had good food, service that was not intrusive, but attentive. Even having our twelve year old was no problem.

This place had a great buzz and excellent service. We had a meatloaf special and the chicken St James (with caper, lemon & parsley sauce). Both were excellent and came with mountains of excellent mash and broccoli. We shared a dessert of homemade apple pie recommended by our waiter and were glad we did. Food is generous both in flavour and size, service was fantastic and it's a great atmosphere. What more could you want!

This warm and friendly ( albeit noisy ) pub-like eaterie is fortunately for this reviewer only two blocks from my New York apartment ! — I went there quite frequently for many years past as it was known as a neighborhood ( upper west - side )get together watering hole for all us arty types . It still has that flavor under its new management as of the last several years . The food is even better now , though more pricey . Still by. Manhattan standards and in this neighborhood the prices are not unreasonable . In nice weather there are several tables outdoors for people -watching .. . Two blocks away is the Museum of Natural History , a fascinating treat in itself and a must-visit for the visitor to New York. For standard and typical Irish fare the St. James hits the spot ..no especially fancy or creative dishes ..the bar drinks and service are excellent and casual.

We stumbled across this place on our first full day in the city by accident. What was meant to be a quick stop turned in to hours. This was done to the amazing welcome we received from the the host. We returned a few nights later to experience the fantastic food and hospitality again. If you are looking for a genuine place with a great vibe. Whether you are after a quick drink or a bite to eat, add this great place to your list.

Top service, very friendly waiters, we followed the advice of our table neighbors, New Yorkers, for the tapas and we did well, a real delight and a pleasure to eat vegetables too (which is not easy to find here) and so well prepared! The beer is excellent!

St. James Gate is a keeper - one of those rare places that's as authentic as a Dublin pub, only with a friendly, neighborhood New York feel. The website photos are a bit overly complimentary, as things certainly look more romantically lit at night. The pub is certainly a bit more worn and torn than what you'd think from the pics. Still, it is unquestionably one of the more welcoming and friendly Irish pubs in the City, and certainly less flinty and more embracing than the typical pub back in the old home country! The Guinness and Smitwicks' are both in great nick, the selections of Jamesons and Bushmills are broad and complete, and the pub food is frankly much better than what you'd expect back in Dublin or Killkenny. Shepards' pie fantastic. And the service is the best, bonnie lasses tending to your needs, offering the happy hour specials, and all the punters that favor the place seem mellow and happy. Sure, and there are lots of Irish pubs in New York. But, for the upper west side, St. James' Gate is the place!

Took my son to New York for his 21st and we found the Saint James Gate Pub on Amsterdam, just above Broadway. The pub has a great atmosphere and the food is excellent with friendly staff and even Magners cider, which was a bonus for Joe. Its worth finding this pub if you are in the area.

Went to this pub on 27th Aug, only 2 minutes from the lucerne hotel and I have to say we could not fault our 4 meals, they were excellent. Good service from the staff and reasonably priced . Well worth giving it a try and will be going again.

We were looking for a restaurant after a day at the Museum of Natural History and came across this little pub. It was a really good spot for lunch, great Irish breakfasts and lunches. Our party got various soups, sandwiches, salads, and the fish and chips. All of us really enjoyed the meal, and we had a nice corner booth with was perfect since we had some children with us (to keep them from wandering). It’s a little tight inside, but the food is good, the salads were a good size, and we had a really nice lunch here, definitely a good spot if you’re by the museum.

Having spent some time in Dublin, I can say that this is as close as a New York venue can get to the real thing -- an authentic Irish pub, but with windows! Yes, light! Great brews on tap and a surprisingly good bar kitchen. It's a stand-out in the midst of the Amsterdam Avenue / Upper West Side bar scene. Friendly, too, a mix of locals, singles, couples, the occasional family and often tourists. It's an excellent mix. A bit noisy. TV's above the bar. Bottom line is that you don't have to be a bar person to enjoy this place for drinks or eats. P.S. "St. James Gate" is the street address of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

Stopped here for dinner before Bryan Adams concert. Excellent cheeseburger. Wife had the bangers and mash and loved it. Excellent atmosphere and reasonable prices ($4 for a rum and coke-must have been happy hour).

My husband discovered this place a few years ago and we make a point of returning every time we're in NYC. There's a warm and welcoming feeling to it that reminds us of pubs in Scotland. During my last trip I took a friend who was a first time traveler to NYC and she thought it epitomized the Upper West Side. We made a meal of appetizers and the bruschetta and fried mushrooms were especially delicious. The bartenders are friendly, the drinks are generous, and our fellow clientele were fun to talk with.

We just wanted a few beers late at night. They had plenty of tables open, but interestingly only 5 beers on tap. That said, they had a very good IPA, and several choices of bottled hard cider. Music was not too loud, which allowed us to have a conversation.

Had a few nights here and could not fault the food, service or atmosphere, and good value for money as well

We met Irish friends at St. James Gate for a few well-made cocktails and perfect pints of Guinness. We delighted in our delicious apps - garlic mushrooms, boneless wings, and bruscheta. The chicken curry and shepherd's pie were equally outstanding. Prices are fair - especially considering the giant sized portions. Can't wait for a return engagement.

We had the misfortune to dine in this place on our first night in New York.. What a mistake !! The staff are rude, the service is horrible, the food and drink is overpriced, add to that the food is just average. You can do better than this place, so just avoid and find a better place around the area.

What a find! Two days into our stay in New York and we stumble across an outstanding Irish pub in Manhattan complete with Irish staff and a great background sound track. The food was the sort of traditional pub grub you'd expect in an establishment like this back home - breast of chicken with mash and broccoli, chicken pot pie, fish and chips etc - and the portions were huge, well cooked and very tasty. We'll definitely come back if we get the chance, if only to watch England lose to the Netherlands tomorrow night.

We stumbled upon this after leaving Central Park and looking for somewhere pub/bar-like for a light snack. Don't be fooled by the 3000+ favourite place - put it near the top. We ordered some "light bites", eggs benedict some boneless wings (more like chicken nuggets of breast meat - no complaint here) buffalo style and some fries. The food was delicious and as always when you order in NY nothing comes up small (if you're thinking $6 for fries is steep for example it's a bowl for 2-3!) Then the beers, if you like an easy going but delicious and fresh IPA, their Bells 2 Heart IPA is a must. For those Pilsner loving folk, if you can go with a lighter slightly (and only slightly!) more grapefruit flavour, the Pop Gun Pils was also a delight. Service was friendly and efficient, and if you can get a window seat, brunching here and watching the world go buy is truly a delight. Next time I return to NYC, I'll be looking to return here! Photo attached contains: - Boneless buffalo wings - Fries side - IPA (darker) - Pils (lighter)

Good menu and plenty of food. Cosy pub. This is the second time we have been here and we enjoyed it as much as the first time we we're here.(we only had drinks the first time, but this time we decided to have dinner and we would certainly recommend it.) Very busy last night with locals there to watch the Mets play (game on TV). We found the waitresses most attentive and very polite.

I love this place, have eaten here many times when visiting the West Side, NY. Drinks are good with a wide selection of beers.

Easily one of the best fish and chips meals I've had at a pub/bar in the City. Also has great beers on tap. Highly recommend!

Warm and cosy - a fabulous place to meet up with friends we hadn't seen for a number of years. The peppermint hot chocolate is a definite must for those who like hot chocolate (with crème de menthe). My husband had the Irish Coffee which he said was very good too. Fabulous on a cold and snowy afternoon!

This "Upper West" located Irish pub/restaurant is good for dinner or just a pint. On Mondays, Mrs Marie Mazziotti entertain with excellent songs. She is an asset for this place.

Wonderful, laid-back Irish pub on the Upper West Side! Great people-watching, good food (I recommend the shepherd's pie), and the best-poured Guinness I've ever had.

I was staying nearby so I stopped in for a late lunch. The "Steak Salad" was one of the specials so knowing I was going to skip dinner I ordered it. Mistake...Every single piece of steak had sinew in it. I should have sent it back but didn't. It wasn't cheap either; $17 !!!

visited from england and this pub was the first one we went in,what a stroke of luck.fantastic atmosphere great staff very friendly and helpful..the barman at the time was called kevin and was brilliant at helping us find good evenings out and even arranged tickets for a yankees game for us..i could not think of a better friendlier pub in new york and will always call in if ever in nyc again...brilliant

I arrived for my first visit to NYC and stumbled across this little gem. I was greeted by the friendliest of staff and ordered the veggie burger,(delicious), and was instantly invited to join the locals at the bar. I made a point of returning to the bar in the evening for food, drinks and the company, and always great banter at the bar. Paul the owner could not have been more welcoming, and took personal interest in both the regulars and tourists alike, enquiring about my day and always in top form... I felt like a local when I left, definitely returning..... From Nuala on my first day to Lee behind the bar on my last, all the staff made me feel right at home.... don't miss this little gem on your trip....

Very Friendly Bar All Staff Helpful Every Question Answered With Clarity, Which Was Helpful For A First Time Visitor To New York. Young Barmaid Was Honest Enough To Return A Twenty Dollar Bill Knowing I Thought It Was A Dollar Bill. Made Very Welcome All Food Very Good Will Go Back Next Year Thank You All Staff

This was an Irish pub on Amsterdam Avenue on the upper west side. The pub is not very big and has a couple of outside tables. Very irish pub by atmosphere. The food was great. I ordered the shepherds pie, which I love. It was delicious and the portion was the size of my head. My husband had the bangers and mash, which also was a good sized portion. The prices were quite reasonable. Would most definitely eat here agsin.

I knew I was in the right place when we heard Pink Floyd playing in the background, and not too loudly so that conversation was possible. Music continued on in same excellent trend (Clapton, Van Morrisson, etc...) which was a plus. Great French Toast w/ bananas, and excellent service. Comfortable and peaceful vibe. Will definitely return.

Great place to get some good food, Irish coffee, brew & wine. If u can get a corner unit for people watching. It has an old style ambiance similar to what u will find in Dublin or Galway. Kids are welcome there & the hot chocolate was enjoyed by kids in our group. Like everything in this area of NYC things are pricey so be prepared.

Great, comfortable local watering hole. Great, friendly staff who always make us feel at home. The food is a great selection of delicious comfort food: beer-battered mushrooms, meatloaf, fajitas, chicken pot pie, fish and chips, mac and cheese. All amazing! Paul is the best bartender in Manhattan!

We were fortunate to find this friendly little pub on our second night in New York. Paul the owner greeted us at the door. The good we ordered was delicious and the portions huge. More importantly the live music was brill. Superb singer called Maria who was then joined by some of the Juilliard Musicians. An absolutely stunning night for two British ladies on tour.
great food. fun place to go.
went here for dinner after arriving late in NY. food was great. staff were great. decided to go back for New Years Eve. the food was fantastic and our server was very helpful and friendly. atmosphere was so fun. would go back anytime.
