Japanese food market in Manhattan

By seanworc |

This is a Japanese food market in Manhattan. There are 2 locations : East 41 Street and Stuyvesant Place. Many Japanese food items unavailable in New York can be found here. Many types of ramen noodles and mojis, the Japanese bean curd ice cream. Wonderful places to explore and find new items for foodies.

Great variety of Japanese snacks, ingredients and fresh food

By Khoi N |

Amazing Japanese store with fresh snacks, sweets, sushi and hot food items. 1 side is a grocery store and the other is mostly food to go. They have an upstairs dining area. The staff is really friendly and I loved how fresh the sashimi was. Buttery and tasty! They have fresh toro from Japan as well

cheap and good

Nice place to snack and grab a quick bite. Nice place to snack and grab a quick bite. Good option for the neighborhood.

A gem

Such an incredible place. So many choices of lunch box, noodles, rice and other Japanese specialities. The grocery store is also really cool and everything is really cheap.

What a little gem!

If we lived in NYC, we would want to be close to a Sunrise Mart for our Japanese grocery supplies. If you are at the Andaz hotel on 5th avenue, lucky you the store is right opposite the hotel. It's a small place but stocks a good range of imported items that you would need to prepare a Japanese homestyle meal - authentic Japanese short grain rice, tofu, noodles, soya sauce, mirin, sake, curry rhu. It also stocks a range of Japanese beer, Calpis, Japanese toiletries like Tsubaki hair care and Japanese snacks like rice crackers. At check out, we noticed several Japanese clients loading up on their supplies. At the front of the store, there is a selection of eat in or take out food - donburi, udon and soba at reasonable prices (starting from usd7) and a limited range of prepacked sushi and rice rolls in the chiller. There is seating on the mezzanine floor for dining in. When we visited we got omu rice (yes the Japanese classic of rice fried with ketchup and wrapped in an omelette) and a box of the sushi. Everything tasted fine and was of an acceptable standard. The omu rice tasted pretty authentic. Well done!

Homesick? Go to Sunrise

A small but great Japanese supermarket. You can get many Japanese foods and goods here. Japanese beers are great price here. Sashimi fish is good.

A little cozy place in a big city

A small but nice fast food and mini market next to Bryant park in NYC. It is a great place for a break after big dinners. Food is decent and cheap for the location. Service is good. My kids all live it.

Decent food with reasonable price

By Carol |

Chicken Katsu don was ok with reasonable price. My husband ordered curry katsu rice. However, it did not come with the pork katsu when he picked up the order. He needed to go back to ask for it. The portion was a bit small. The quality was ok. The place has microwave for people to heat up food. Plenty of seating is available on second floor.

Tasty Japanese food cheap and fast

We noticed the Sunrise Mart the last time we were on Library Way after having a bite at Cafe Zaiya down the street, so this time decided to try lunch here instead. It's actually a little Japanese supermarket in the back, plus ready-to-eat or by-order food up front. My wife got the miso katsu bento (pre-made) while I opted for the katsu curry (ordered at the counter). My food was ready before I even finished paying at the register, and it was really good (I love Japanese curry). We ate at the tables upstairs, it was no-nonsense and perfect for what we we needed. Recommended for a quick Japanese lunch on the cheap - under $30 for 3 of us including drinks.

My ‘must stop in’ market in NY City

By SKC239 |

Conveniently located in the City, directly across from the NY Public Library near Bryant Park. Love this little Japanese market/take out. Love that it’s a small store so things don’t sit on the shelves for months. If you’re looking for ‘on the go’ onigiri, under $2!! There were a few places in and around the City that we’re selling onigiri for $4+!! Great prices on ume, natto...they sell Japanese snacks and candy too!

Good quality Japanese fast food

By rebecca m |

Very good valued affordable Japanese food, just off the Central Public Library, combining fast food and supermarket, very convenient, really enjoyed the food, a lot of eat in customers were Japanese, you can't go wrong with that.

Cheap Japanese, Steps from the Library & Grand Central

By WorldSki |

Fast, dependable and inexpensive, a well orchestrated order/pay/and wait system flows on the first floor of this combination takeout/eat-in restaurant and Japanese speciality food market. Eat-in is on the second floor. Good selection of udon, ramen, don, and creative sandwich combinations, plus a wide selection of canned mystery drinks. Easy to find: the New York Public Library is 100 yards away. Easy to swing through when you need a Sapporo for the train: It's 1 1/2 blocks from Grand Central.

Japanese fast food

By Leb P |

I grabbed small trays for a quick dinner after work. Price are really honest, considering the avarage. I think it offers much more for lunch than in the late afternoon, however there are a lot of Japanese products, I'm not an expert and for that reason I cannot say it is excellent.

Surprisingly good sushi at a grocery store

By SuzyDough |

We are on our way to a broadway show and didn't have enough time for dinner so we stopped here for food. We got some sushi and it was surprisingly good. We even got a dessert and it was so good. Great place to cheap sushi. It's just like a buffet sushi place. The quality is probably slightly better than the buffet place.

Ok spot for quick Japanese food

By Reasonable50 |

This small store is good for purchasing hard to find Japanese goods. The food counter and upstairs seating is very basic. Low quality but tasty ramen. It is quick. Do not recommend as it is pricey with basic quality.

Good lunch spot

By martynsnook |

A lot of Japanese variety hear. Ramen, udon, katsu Dom. Good sandwiches. Everything can be freshly made while you wait or if in a rush there is plenty of pre prepared food

Tasty Japanese food just down the street from Grand Central

By Naturespeak |

I couldn't have been happier to find Sunrise Mart. I've been back twice since then. The food is freshly prepared and delicious. This visit my companion ordered the Katsudon and I opted for the similar dish with more ginger. Both were delicious and served promptly at the counter. Seating upstairs is often hard to get during lunch but it's easy to find a table off hours. I'll keep coming back!

Fresh and tasty!

By Sara J |

I've never had packaged sushi that tasted so delicious and fresh! I know they make and put it on the shelves frequently and I was there around 1 or 2 PM but still! So good! The grocery store is also very nice, and I like how they separate the store from the restaurant part so things don't get too crowded.

Great Treasure FOUND

By Leon H |

After long walk, we were happy to find this mini mart/restaurant for a break. Before sit down, we found some variation of Japanese beverages. As everyone tried to catch a breath, I was venturing to the mini mart. Oh, my, they have the most collections of Japanese groceries. I got some authentical cakes, mochi, tea, cookies, and seasoning. Price is really REASONABLE compared to Bean Town. Before we left, we ordered some takeout dishes. They were alright though. If you guys ever were that area, stop by.

Good Japanese lunch and grocery store

By Marian T |

Eat lunch and shop for dinner! The food is very good, with a large variety of dishes. Service seems somewhat chaotic, but it works. Eat in (upstairs) or take out. They also carry all sorts of Japanese specialty items that are hard to find elsewhere in NYC.

Great grocery/lunch spot

Cool mini Japanese cafe/grocery store combo. The groceries seem fresh and the made to order cafe foods are pretty tasty.

Decent snack stop in Midtown

By Ealgian |

This review pertains to the "mart" part of the store. Got a variety of Japanese snacks and condiments here. Staff were very attentive and helpful in explaining some of the items to this particular non-Japanese-reading customer. I really like the Calpico soft drinks they sell here--super addictive, especially the Lychee flavor! Am still working my way through the assortment of random savory and sweet snacks I got here...

My family loves this mart

Japan rules!

By lucamoche |

Super nice experience to enjoy a typical Asian supermarket and taste good food on the mezzanine. Sunrise Mart is located in front of the marvellous NY library and is perfect for a quick and very cheap healthy lunch. Cookers prepares most of the typical Japanese dishes like Katsu-Don or Ramen and Onigiri. Food quality is superbe and the place is funny and genuine. Japan rules!

Find Japanese Food and Products

By Christina S |

Simple place but there is a small japanese supermarket (foods, products, drinks, cakes, obento and you can order noddles, rice + main. Gyu-don 6.95. Shortcake (strawberry) 4.00. I can find sweets, snacks, in the back of the store.

Good selection

Great just for browsing or if you're looking for something in particular. Good selection. Good prices.

Very good sushi

By Ole Snow |

Took a quick stop to buy some soy sauce and sushi. The sushi was splendid and rivalled easy other restaurants for more fine dining. Wouldn’t hesitate a second to visit again!

Asian Specialty market

By Chmpgnrose |

A specialty Japanese market where all food finds are Japanese as I am unable to venture to the prefectures of Japan, but Japan can come to NY. Albeit, Sunrise Mart is not as extensive nor offers a large selection as the renowned Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater, NJ., the largest Japanese supermarket in the U.S. There is a minimal selection of Omusubi where Onigiri Tuna at $1.49, Onigiri Shibasu Anchoby at $1.25, Onigiri Ume at $1.25 and my favorite Sakuraya Fuwafuw strawberry rice cake at $.99. I like their Mochi Mame at $1.55 also. I was unable to attain my favorite Omusubi, Ume Onigiri Noris seaweed salt rice pickled plum for the lack thereof. There is a bakery counter and packaged baked goodies which of course no Japanese market is complete without Ramen noodles. Bento Boxes are delightful as this location also offer dinner ware and lots of frozen foods at reasonable prices. Take me to TOKYO, please! Copies of two Japan's NY Weekly newspapers are available for purchase. This 41st Street Midtown Sunrise Mart is directly adjacent to a competitor Japanese market, Yagura Japanese Market. Note: CASH ONLY if less than $10.00. Cashiers greet patrons in true Japanese fashion to distribute change with two hands of the bills facing the recipient as well as I accepted with two hands and bowed to "domo" for thank you in Japanese.

Japanese grocery store

This is one of few Japanese grocery stores in Manhattan located right across from Andaz 5th Ave. Many Japanese products you won't find easy elsewhere. Price varies though.

Great place to buy Japanese food!

By Anna L |

It's amazing that we can buy natto, Japanese fast food like mentaiko pasta, tako wasabi, things like these! They don't have all the food I like, but they have pretty wide range of products. One of my favorite market in nyc!
