Good sushi, nice atmosphere

By Rob de Jong |

Nice restaurant, with typical Japanese atmosphere. Nice selection of different Japanese dishes inclusing sashimi en sushi of course. Food was really good but on the expensive side I would say.

Business Dining Extraordinaire

By SMS-MJS |

Stopped here on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch. The place was packed with business diners (95% men in suits). We didn't have reservations. Others arrived after us and were seated first with reservations (which is nice if you know to make them). We wanted a light lunch of 2 sushi rolls and a salad, and we learned our meal was under the $20 per person minimum so be aware. Pricey for a light sushi lunch). Food was very good. Fresh. Made to order. No "specialty" sushi like a Dragon Roll, etc but simple and authentic. The front host is very personable and great! Our server was OK. A bit of a language barrier getting questions answered.

The Best Sushi

By Fred940 |

I consider Sushiann the best traditional sushi in New York. It is consistently delicious and beautifully presented and served. I am amazed at how high the quality is compared to other well known sushi restaurants. Their uni is to die for. Annie and her family are the hosts and are delightful. The waitstaff is always friendly and very professional. After some visits, they will anticipate what you want to order and any special requests. The price point for the meals is also very fair for such high quality dining.

Wonderful - still one of the best in NYC

By ZenaRd |

SushiAnn remains a favorite for sushi and sashimi. Have enjoyed great fresh fish every time I have been here. Quality and hospitality are top notch. I usually come for lunch and have the sushi sashimi combination - great assortment of delicious and perfectly prepared fish every time. The sushi and sashimi pieces are exquisitely presented and so delicious! Room is buzzing with business diners, and the front of house is very welcoming and polite. Service is also very good and attentive. Always a pleasure.

Yummie sushi and mango mochi in a silent setting

By Maliparmi |

I have been to SushiAnn twice during the last month. I had edamame, green salad with ginger dressing, eel / avocado roll, and cooked sushi plate. Edamame was heated at the right degree and with right amount of salt. Ginger dressing in the salad was so tasty. The rice in the roll was thin and I was able to taste the fish and avocado more than the rice. It was very nice to see that they had cooked sushi platters, good for sushi beginners. I had to eat cooked because of health reasons, otherwise my friends really enjoyed the real uncooked sushi and sashimi too. Finally, they had very nice selection of mochi. It was one of the best mochis I had. I tried all flavors, green tea, vanilla, strawberry and mango. Mango was my favorite. The service was very good, the restaurant was silent when compared to loudy NY restaurants. I highly recommend this place and I will go again.

Atrocious

By davidgott |

Went during lunch, very slow service, the place was so cramped that the guy sitting at the table next to me was hitting our table. The sushi was way over priced and the rolls were TINY. Not only were they small but the fish didnt even go all the way through the roll, it was like a m&m sized piece of fish in the roll. My friend got the sushi regular and received avocado rolls and other really cheap pieces. It's hard to comment on the quality since the fish was so small I could hardly taste it. Before we left, we went to tell the chef and he laughed at us and then we told the host and he didnt care either. NEVER GO!

Great food

By hrprofessional |

Always enjoy the food at SushiAnn. Fresh food, good service and a good experience. The Special California roll is a favorite.

Very good. Pricey.

By Amy F |

Had a selection of sushi since they don't offer soy paper and I cannot eat seaweed wrapped rolls. Sushi was fresh and they made great recommendations for the specialty Japanese mackeral which was excellent. Agree that it seems pricey for the amount of sushi - but the quality was good.

Super!

Comfort Sushi with Park Ave Ambiance

By azad-musafir |

Looking for a quick lunch with mid-pandemic outside seating, we came across Sushi Ann walking out of our hotel. An understated place without the hype that attaches to top class sushi in Manhattan, and with outside tables sheltered against the spring breeze, we gave it a try. We were not disappointed and have been back 2-3 times since. The experience is simple with a no fuss ala carte menu, offering a variety of sushi and sashimi and straight up friendly service. Everything we had was super fresh and well teated with the quality of ingredients speaking for itself. The salad crisp with a classic ginger sesame adding to the crunch. The miso soup was well balanced yet flavourful. Every fish was clearly high quality and very fresh. Even the wasabi and pickled ginger were of high quality. It has become a go-to place for us. Convenient to nearby shopping and a quick satisfying experience. The prices skew high but are fair given the mid-town location and the quality offered. It's still worth a star off though.

Top Quality Sushi

They seem to always have the freshest sushi. A great place for lunch, even though it gets crowded sometimes. Reservations are a must.

Great and interesting Sushi

By Peakclimber46 |

Sat at the counter and were spoiled with delicious pieces and progressive tastings of e.g. lean tuna through medium to fatty. A lot of different fish not the standard fare. Well worth it, although not cheap.

Omakase is the way to go

By gambit76 |

Traditional sushi restaurant with fresh fish. Cannot complain about that but the service was underwhelming. We had to ask for drinks a few times when glasses were already empty. Toro was beautiful as it was fatty and fresh!

Excellent

By RachelEllyn |

The sushi was delicious, very authentic. Located right down the street from one of the entrances of our hotel (The Lotte) so it was perfect for our first night in town (late flights). Not the fastest sushi bar, not the slowest, but totally worth the wait.

A little pricey for the overall quality.

By Todd M |

Great waiter. Salmon skin salad was in need of dressing. Uni was old and the hand rolls were tiny. The fish was otherwise good on the sashimi platter. Good saki selection.

authentic, top-end Japanese cuisine

By foxbat |

This is a very popular Japanese restaurant which offers first-class Japanese food. Very good staff, and the chefs are highly competent.

Authentic Japanese

By globefoodies |

The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. We especially enjoyed the special of the day.

Good but too expensive!

By Martin-nitraM |

This is not the typical turist trap, but almost. The sushi is good, but nothing special, just in the same league as sushi you find in other places on Manhattan. Service was ok, not overwhelming, but friendly and attentive, a little stressing perhaps, with many different persons doing things at our table. What stands out about this place are the prices on the menue. Unfortunately we were too tried and jetlagged to go anywhere else on our first night on Manhattan. Later during our stay, we found so many much better and cheeper places eat!

Wow

By Alon S |

Seat on the bar and had one of the most exciting and amazing tastes of Sushi ever. The chef (or should I call him master) made me taste every possible fish/ combination. Tastes are heaven. So do the price. I'll take it as an experience ($150 expensive experience), but enjoyed every single minute...

Fabulous Sushi in midtown

By Fred940 |

Sushi is my favorite food. Sushiann is my favorite restaurant. Fish is beautifully prepared, always fresh and delicious. I can't appreciate any other sushi Restauant because they can't compare. My favorite dish is Uni (sea urchin) which is always perfect here. The staff is gracious and accommodating. Having been going there for many years, I miss the lovely owner Annie, who passed away earlier in 2014 at a very young age. But her children and loyal staff continue to maintain her very high standards. Go for business or pleasure but go. Reservations are a must. It is always full for lunch and dinner.

Solo Dinner

By Vitor M |

Friendly and nice ambiance. Servers excell at making you feel well taken care of, without being pushy. Great food with many excellent japanese choices, good sake menu (and wine, and beers...). Wood sticks could be better, for the quality of the place and price they charge: theirs are square and edgy. But that's the only drawback! Well located, definetely a place to return many times!

Don't do it!!

By Colin H |

Save yourself. There is nothing worse than bad sushi. No one should ever mess with raw fish! But this place.....it's just bad. And it's not worth the risk. We wandered in by accident and felt violated by the food! Everything seemed off. Stay away.

Minuscule Portions at Outrageous Prices

By Landmarkfinder A |

Apologies to all the people who have eaten here since our visit two weeks ago: Our delay in posting this review has probably dented hundreds of more pocketbooks. Consider this: A party of 5 adults and 2 children walked away hungry with a bill of $480 with tip (including 3 modest drinks and 2 sodas for the kids). The two kids had small appetizer portions. The adults began with a plate of eel sushi and ordered 2 sashimi deluxe plates ($38 each i believe), 2 sushi deluxe plates, and an a la carte order of tuna. The appetizer consisted of 5 microscopic rolls, the size of dimes. The sashimi deluxe plates had 2-3 pieces of fish about half the size one would receive the most modest restaurant -- and half the size of the a la carte order. The sushi platter was skimpy though the rolls were normal size -- just boring. All of the fish was delicious and fish but who would have known? Two of us drove out of New York and had dinner later that night.

If in New York City, midtown, and you like sushi...

By Michele489 |

Sushi Say (now Sushi Ann) is the first place where I came across sush. That is when, prior to becoming a regular visitor to Japan, I, a silly Westerner, wondered why they didn't bother cooking fish. Similar to meeting who was your first girlfriend in life, over the years Sushi Ann ha become a must when in town. Mind you, it is not romanticism only. Sushi Ann belongs to that minority in the Japanese cuisine space, that can afford at least a limited number of Japanese waiters. A small number of o itamaes (cooks) are busy behind the bar. Trust me, that makes a whole lot of difference. The menu is not incredibly reach of dishes, but the quality is among the best you find outside of Japan. The fish is excellent, the client is not taken for a ride with the inappropriate rice: this is the one meant for sushi. The misoshiro soup is the best I have ever tasted in America. One little bit of advice: book way in advance, for New Yorkers do not overlook this place.

Traditional Sushi

By Julie U |

Sushi was great!! Very fresh and the food came out very quickly. I will say if you are looking for more westernized sushi with all the different sauces then this is not your place. IT"S true Japanese sushi. We went on a Tuesday night, and it was quite. The atmosphere is just so so. Once again, TRADITIONAL. You can sit at the sushi bar.

Pleasant Surprise

By MaryFly6 |

Popped in without a reservation while waiting for our room to be prepared. Wow, outstanding fresh sushi that was excellent. They took us in quickly without a reservation, long line up so clearly it is popular. The staff from the reception through to desert were friendly, efficient and fantastic. Was a wonderful lunch and will definitely go again.

Great sushi

By SJL1605 |

I am actually quite surprised that this place has relatively mixed reviews, as I always get great sushi here with good service. Granted, its not cheap, but where is in Midtown? The fish is always super fresh and well presented and the service is pretty quick as well. Highly recommended.

Very fresh seafood

If you like sushi, you will love Sushiann. Busy with the business lunch crowd, this is a no nonesense Japanese food haven. Excellent service and quality!

Good Sushi in Busy Midtown

By silverandbluedog |

Sushi Ann has earned it position as one of the top sushi restaurants in the midtown business district. The sushi is excellent, and the restaurant is clean and efficiently run. I have gone there many times and shall return many more. My only issue with Sushi Ann is that it is so much a business haunt that it's not that relaxing. For example, they are doing major construction in the neighborhood, so there is scaffolding at the entrance. The seating is very compact. The staff is professional but only moderately warm. They like to turn the tables quickly. Aside from that, it's a thumbs up!

Classic, high quality Japanese Food

By fashionlover |

Came here with colleagues upon recommendation and loved it! It's a quiet restaurant, and in true Japanese manner slightly understated. Ideal for conversations. The food was very fresh and top quality. Though not the most creative Sushi creations, every dish was delicious. Very attentive service, too. Would definitely come back.

Great food and service

Excellent sushi. Great service. Relaxed atmosphere with excellent food. Have been several times; great food and service have been consistent. Coat check is available and location is very convenient. Will go back again. Recommend.

First class omakase!

By Mike41157 |

Our second time here at the bar for omakase with the head chef - truly a great experience for anyone who loves sushi and sashimi. Prices are not cheap but you are getting great service and exceptionally fresh seafood prepared in ways that you cannot do at home. They have a good selection of sakes and other wines as well. My wife and I walked away totally satiated, a bit poorer, but in the end satisfied when we complimented chef and he said, "It is my job."

Best sushi though a bit expensive

By NDMorrison06 |

Sushi Ann is my favorite sushi restaurant in the world. Ive been to Tokyo and Sushi Ann's is better! I usually order one of the sushi-sashimi combinations and the cod fish appetizer. Their unagi is phenomenal and must-try! They are a bit expensive though but wprth every penny!

Luxury sushi bar

Not bad but I find it very sad that they put wasabi inside ALL the sushi. What if you dont like wasabi just like me? :( The atmosphere is very nice and you can see the people cooking right in front of you!!

Terrible value for money. Extremely small portions and overpriced. Super slow service and thumb nail sized sushi served one at a time

Stumbled across the Japanese gem!! Wonderful and attentive service. The sushi was fresh and we have tried a lot of eel but my husband said it's the best he tried! Steps away from the hustle and bustle this place is awesome!!

Spoil yourself and sit at the counter

By Peakclimber46 |

Not your most reasonable sushi place but well worth it. Sit at the counter ($ 50 min) and try some truly unusual tastes.Live shrimp, we skipped it but they sure were wiggeling. The chefs will spoil you, just tell them to pick what ever is best on that particular day. We try not to miss it every time we are in Manhattan.

This is the best sushi restaurant I have found in the US. We went there for lunch and were served a wide selection of sushi, each of which was quite fresh and well prepared. I was pleasantly surprised to find sushi this good outside of Japan. Will defintely return on a future trip to NYC.

Miso soup followed by a selection of freshly made sushi just hit the spot after a long day travelling. We were given a warm welcome and enjoyed the whole experience

Top choice for Sushi in New York City

By Fred940 |

I eat at Sushi-Ann probably once a week, sometimes more frequently. The restaurant is located in my office building. The reception is always warm, and the sushi out of this world. It is fresh and delicious and beautifully prepared. Uni is my favorite, and the uni served here tastes like the sea itself. I bring business colleagues from all over the world here and they rave. One group of colleagues I see regularly when they visit from Norway always wants to eat at Sushi-Ann. And those folks know fish. Annie herself is usually at the door to welcome you. She is a charming hostess/owner. So are her staff of hosts and waiters and waitresses. Come a few times and they will now what your preferences are before you tell them. This is my favorite restaurant in New York City.

Best SushiNin town

By yviroundtheworld |

Amazing selection of fish and seafood, you can't get it any fresher. Only japanese masters, trained in Japan. Try the chef's selection, surprising and beautiful. Great sake selection! Service a bit slow but very friendly.

Excellent fresh, authentic sushi

By KManNewYork |

You can tell right away that the sushi is extremely fresh. The prices are a little higher than a typical sushi restaurant in midtown Manhattan but well worth it. Reservations are essential for lunch.

Excellent Chirashi

By Camila120428 |

First visit for me. I had the Chirashi for lunch and truly enjoyed it. The fish they served were really fresh and the rice perfectly cooked. I will definitely go back. Price is in line with other good sushi places in midtown Manhattan.

SUSHI WITHOUT PRETENTIONS

By Konstantinos Yaz |

lately in the big cities to get really good sushi one must pay also for the high end post, fashionable decoration, pretentious maitre d hotel and all other "components" that make a restaurant " a la mode". If you wish to avoid all that and still get a good sushi, this is your place. It is downtown New York, it has a good variety, it allows itself to run out of some dishes in order not to compromise, it is VERY REASONABLE in prices and you can enjoy the food. There is no creepy looking doorman and most probably no high heel top models but if all you want is to enjoy GOOD SUSHI, this is your place.

great, great sushi.

By Robert044 |

Unfortunately we were not able to sit at the bar as our hotel concierge recommended. At the bar the chef makes special dishes, may be next time. The lunch was really of a excellent quality. My benchmark is the okura hotel in Amsterdam. This was even better. The otorro and chew torro nigiri were perfect. Excellent bluefin tuna. Most shocking was the nigiri with raw gamba. Irresistable. Fish of an outstanding quality. Prices are acceptable according to the quality you get. My new BENCHMARK!!!!! Rice of an excellent quality, may be a little warmer. Very good lunch, affordable.

Authentic High Quality Japanese

By Steve F |

Located on 51st Street between Park and Madison, this is a midtown gem. It is simple but polished in a way only the Japanese know how to do. At lunch, it is always full of business executives eating a quality but fairly speedy lunch. The Sushi lunch special, also available as Sashimi, is excellent value. It is served with a miso soup and a salad. The quality of the fish is first rate. I have also been at night. There is less hustle and bustle at the door. If you have the time and the wallet, get the Omakase. If you love real Japanese sushi, Sushi Ann ranks as one of the best sushi restaurants in New York.

Good sushi

Good sushi and good service. Not give stars because the sushi roles had a higher percentage of rice than the five stars standards. Quality very good and service truly excellent.

A place to dine

This was a stop by, never read a review. What a great surprise. Comfortable and great setting, superb service and great authentic sushi. The fish we had were totally fresh. Enjoyed this find!!!

Outstanding Sushi

By soul_surfer |

Sushi-Ann always delivers. I enjoy sitting at the bar and allowing the chef to prepare his own menu. They appreciate your deference and generally produce a meal that is extremely fresh and very tasty. I would recommend visiting with someone who has dined there in the past as you will be able to fully enjoy your experience rather than trying to figure out both the menu and layout at the same time. Sushi-Ann requires reservations for lunch, as noted by previous reviewers.

Excellent and authentic

By 7777950 |

Yes, it is pricey, but you get some of the freshest and most authentic shush and sashimi in NYC. There is a large selection of very fresh fish and seafood and the presentation is always stunning. Yes, the rolls look small, but that is, because they are not over loaded with rice like in so many other sushi restaurants. The service was outstanding. Very good selection of sake as well. Will definitely be back.

Very over priced

By TinyTawnty |

I'm not sure how our bill equaled to almost $300 for 2 people. Sure we ordered a bottle of Saki but other than that had a small amount of sushi & sashimi. The sushi is good, the fish tastes fresh and is good but the rolls and hand rolls are so small that you have to wonder what the point is

Terrible service! No good for tourists!

By Oron D |

I came in 15 min before 12. I was "welcomed" asked if I had a reservation. I said no. The place was empty - not a single costumer. They said I could be seated and that I'd have to wait for more than an hour to eat (with a terrible attitude). I obviously ran away from the place! Terrible experience! By the way, this is the first "worst rating" review in my TripAdvisor profile ever; not used to this!

Server made us feel bad

By DoctorSIS |

Excellent sushi and lovely evening with family. When we had trouble reading fine print, the server led us to believe that we had done something bad. While the manager then clarified that we hadn't done anything wrong, we regret the evening ended with a bad feeling...

A bit too expensive!

By Gianluca Bazzica |

I went to eat for dinner on Friday September 16th... The quality of the food was ok, but definitely too costly! Not very much impressed, sorry.

First Class Authentic Perfection

By Chad L |

Your not going to find a bunch of goofy rolls made for tourists. This place is legit. Full on perfection. Had Omakase at the bar for one. The clam miso was by far the best I have had in my life. The chef was a gem. A master. The fish and execution of the sushi was first class. I was blown away. By far the best sushi I have had in my life.

Perfect Service and Sushi

By Mollymee66 |

If you like Sushi, go to Sushi Ann. The food was great and the service was perfect! It is not cheap but well worth it.

Nothing Special, Expensive

By STYLEONTHEGO |

Sushi Ann, in midtown, has the look and feel of its pricey competition. The tired, 1970's bamboo themed dining room and the slow service are among the first standout issues with this place. The expensive menu, average sushi add to the lack of oomph in this place. My final gripe: I was on a business lunch with four people, dressed in suits, and seated initially next to a family with small children, in a back room. Will never return to this place.

Food excellent, but.....

By Jean Pierre F |

We planned to go on Columbus Day, but could not make it because of the crowd and the bad traffic. We postponed for today. Warm friendly welcome, we were shown to our table and ordered our meal. And then..... 40 minutes later we were served our sushi. This is obviously inacceptable. The manager apologized. Food was excellent.

Our go to sushi restaurant

By Anastasia3052018 |

Although we no longer live in New York City we visit Sushi Ann every time we visit New York. The chef’s selection is always extra special and worth the extra money. It is like eating sushi at a fine sushi restaurant in Japan. We are never disappointed.

Sushi was unlike an I'll ever have!

By Lisa C |

I had lunch at Sushi Ann recently and found this place an experience - we sat at the chef's table which I would highly recommend. Chef Masa is a master. We let him decided the choices and the flow and he was perfection with a knife and presentation and instruction. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The Japanese snapper with a touch of lemon and sea salt will never be topped. I've been to Tokyo and this is a true experience very similar to what you might hope to experience in Japan.

Good but not great

By Kathy G |

I had heard that this restaurant had excellent sushi. I thought it was very average. In addition as soon as my lunch partner and I sat down a very rude server told us to order quickly because it is lunch hour and they were very busy. Even if the sushi was very good I would not return since the server was so rude.

Horrible, expensive...the worst of a bad restaurant

By Ocean8564 |

Nobody is smiling, neither welcoming Food is ok but nothing related to those crazy prices and it takes forever to receive your plates from the hand of a rude waitress. If you like sushis and good places, avoid it.

Hell to the No

By Steve G |

If I am running errands or doing some shopping I frequently grab sushi at lunch since it's cool for singles to sit at the counter. On the way in the door the host said the worst thing to me, "Will you be spending $30? You have to spend $30 to sit at the bar! If not you sit at the tables" What the hell kind of welcome is that? Here's the deal: after two/three rolls and a drink the bill would have come close to or even over $30. It is Manhattan after all. I stormed out of the restaurant because whatever I wish to spend is enough. In this recession every dollar is hard earned and is a reward for good labor. Also if a restaurant helps me relax the bill has a funny way of running up. You can have sushi delivered to your bed for less then $30. Do not tell me I owe you something or expect a certain level of order. If service had been friendly I would have spent twice as much and invited back friends. Maybe there is a cool custom menu at the bar but it wasn't sold to me in a welcoming way.

Excellent

Food and service are fantastic. The sushi chef's are authentic and the food quality is top notch!! If you get a chance to eat here you will not be disappointed.

slipping

By upintheairglobally |

Sushi Ann is a long-time fixture in New York, lately during two visits about four months apart we felt it was slipping. Sushi did not seem as fresh as the high-ish prices lead us to expect, also was not cold. One of us ordered the "cooked" sushi, that was a mistake. Sushi-Ann needs a redo with a top sushi master who insists on the best.

Almost like Japan

By Travel4evermore |

Lots of Japanese staff and the feeling of Japan in ambiance of the restaurant. I had a set lunch with ice green tea and it was perfect from the salad, to the miso to the sushi rolls to the grilled fish and green tea ice cream. A place to relax - a bit pricy but worth it

Among the finest authentic sushi and sashimi in Manhattan - try it, you'll love it

By CrisPopenoe |

I've been coming to Sushi Ann regularly (and it's predecessor Sushisay which had the same staff) since the early 1990s. I'm super picky about the quality of the fish I eat and have tried out most all of the other high-end Japanese in the city. There are several others that I'd rate highly, but this is the one I keep coming back to over and over again. Whenever I bring a friend or colleague they rave about the experience. The fish is super fresh, and well selected and of a quality you'd expect to find at a like establishment in Tokyo. The price is high, but not any higher than lots of sushi restaurants that do not even begin to compare with Sushi Ann. The setting is serene and elegant, while keeping to a Japanese theme of simplicity. The staff couldn't be nicer and the service is exemplary.

Authentic and fresh

By Skych8ser |

If you like the basics, this place will not disappoint. The fish was super fresh and well prepared. They have some basic rolls, but no special rolls, at least on the lunch menu.

Good food and service

By RockyRacoon |

They had a $35 price fixed special that was very good. The service was excellent.

Absolutely the best sushi in a lovely setting

By Bethamy W |

We had been going to Sushi Ann for years but had not been in the area for a decade and thought we’d try it again. It has maintained its incredibly high standards. The sushi is simply the best anywhere hands down as are the rice, miso soup and seaweed salad. The service is impeccable. Look no further.

Absolutely great but expensive

By drl_smit-may |

We have dined all over Japan and had more than 200 Omakasa meals. We stopped in at the sushi bar for a one hour lunch. As usual we ordered all the most expensive sashimi and sushi. The quality of everything was Great. The Uni,Toro and Live Ama Ebi were excellent. The bill came to $400 which is expensive even for New York. Still highly recommend this restaurant for lunch and dinner at the sushi counter. The staff was extremely accommodating. The service was perfect!

The best sushi I've ever had

By ConnTraveller73 |

My friends and I were in the city for a day trip, and we wandered into Sushi-Ann. We were greeted by a friendly Host who asked us if we had reservations. It was already bustling with a business lunch crowd. We told him we did not, but he made room for us anyway. The staff were all friendly and helpful, but the food was fantastic. I have to start with the green tea. It has never been my favorite, but this was delicious! I find my self craving it now. I ordered spicy tuna rolls and new york rolls and they were just right. My friend doesn't like Sushi, so she ordered a grilled Salmon. It was out of this world. Hands down the best salmon I've ever tasted! The next time I'm in the city, I will definitely go back!!

Great sushi and service

By AK6 |

Visited for lunch. Ordered the lunch set with salad, miso soup and sushi. The sushi had a good selection- the fish was fresh and the accompanying California roll was also good. Service is efficient.

Worst Japanese restaurant in my life

By MemberfromPadova |

I never wrote a review for a restaurant so far, but feel the need to make an exception for such an unpleaseant surprise. I wanted to have a quick solo dinner after a business meeting on Park Avenue and found the place by chance, as it was the first Japanese restaurant I bumped in. It looked nice form the outside and at a first glance from the inside. The first surprise was to learn from the menu that you must order at least for 20 USD if you sit at the table and for 30 USD if you sit at the sushi bar. While I happened to see this while playing at a poker table, I found it unpredendented and obnoxious for a restaurant. The sushi-sashimi deluxe combo + miso soup totalled about 40 USD, about twice as much than the most common shopping-mall Japanese restaurant chains. Worst of all, food quality was similar and quantity was inferior. An additional 5 single pieces sushi order, one japanese beer, taxes and tip got to a total of 87 USD. This was not the highest bill I paid at a Japanese restaurant, but it was definitely, and by far, the worst value for money. I have been to several other places where you can get a memorable dinner for the same money or even less. Quality and satisfaction are always remembered long after price is forgotten. Next time I'm in the big apple I hope to have more luck in the random selection of a dinner place and try to avoid similar price-inflated tourist traps!

As good as it gets (outside of Japan)

By Michele489 |

I have been knowing this place for years (decades?), ever since it was named Sushi Say. It has never disappointed: the food's quality is excellent. Also worth a mention, there aren't that many sushi restaurants in the West, whose o-itamae are Japanese (a reason why, whenever possible, I prefer to seat at the bar). They have a good choice of Japanese beer and sake. And yet, you feel you are in the West: the place is a little noisy (and packed with people who would order a miso soup as an appetizer, as opposed to something you enjoy at the end of the meal). Never mind, for, outside of Japan, this is one of the best places you can go to.

Simple place, great sushi

The interior is very simple. No fancy things here, just tables and chairs. It is also possible to sit at the counter and watch the kitchen. The sushi was very good!

Even the not hungry will just want to indulge

Great service by sushi Chef Sakai and his team. Impeccable morsels of sushi which are so amazing to the taste buds! What a wonderful time I had with dear family members who go there all the time when they lived in New York! I forgot to take all the photos of the yummy food but here are some. #yummysushi #newyorkcity

Decent Sushi

By David M |

I visited recently wit ha couple of friends - had never been before, even though the place has been around forever! I think it was good, but not great - it is a quiet place, the service is fine (not great The sushi (all we ate) was good - some interesting twists (nothing crazy, just slightly different rolls, etc...) and we enjoyed our meal i think the plating stood out as superior, but that is not something that I get impressed wit h(unless it is a fancy dinner that I ma catering, etc) I have no issue with this place and would readily go again, but I would seek out others before going here

Best sushi I have eaten in years

By Moth |

I was introduced to Sushiann by a friend and had an absolutely wonderful time. I didn't ask the chef (we were at the bar) but from the way he served us, I would definitely say he had had his regulation 7 years' training. The fish was fabulously fresh and the service outstanding. I simply don't understand the other reviews of this restaurant, but I have double checked the address and I was indeed in the same Sushiann...

Fresh, delicious sushi for biz lunch

A great business lunch spot if you enjoy sushi. The sushi is so well-prepared and fresh that you'd think they just caught the fish that morning! The service is good and the hosts greet you with a smile.

Sushi Mid-Town

The sushi and rolls were good. It's better if you are on an expense account as it could be pricey. The restaurant has more quiet rooms for those on business.

Exquisite sushi in New York

I've gone to to Sushi Ann a couple times now, and I will definitely be back. It is an excellent restaurant with exquisite sushi. I especially enjoyed the sashimi, it was so fresh, and just melted in my mouth. As others have noted in the reviews, the portions are not huge, but they are very high quality.

yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good, but expected more for Michelin mention

By TheGlobalFinn |

Excellent fresh sushi. This is pure Japanese style, no tempura, no teriyaki or grills. Just sushi. The sushi was really good, staff were helpful and clearly knew their stuff. Ate at the counter, which was clearly the best thing to do, unless you are in a group. It's quite pricey at about 3.00 to 9.00 per sushi piece depending on what you go for, but you'll eat well for about 100 per head all in. Really nice place, but somehow didn't quite live up to the Michelin recommendation. Still, can't complain too much, overall this is a high quality sushi place with plenty of character and traditional flair.
