Small but very special and individual

By Aeskulap1 |

It was very close to Hotel Pod 51, small but very Special and individual restaurant. The food was excellent, prepared in front of you. Service was very friendly and proffesional. It's more expensive then other sushi places around, but sure worth the experience.

This is our little secret!

By Sandra L |

This is my go to sushi place in Midtown East. The omakase is outstanding! Reserve a seat at the small sushi bar and marvel at the chef/owner's speed and agility in getting all the food out. For the sushi omakase, he makes and gives you one piece at a time to devour. Each piece is a work of art and is delicious. He instructs you on which pieces to dip in soy sauce and he uses a blow torch on some to enhance the flavor. It is a great show and a marvelous culinary experience but don't tell too many people about it because it is a small place and I don't want have a hard time making reservations.

Excellent omakase

By Maggie B |

My sister and I tried this place as it had a slightly cheaper omakase than other places nearby. The food was delicious, the wait staff super kind — and we loved chatting with the head sushi chef behind the counter. A lovely evening, would highly recommend!

GREAT PLACE for Sushi

By S c |

We came here for lunch one day and found that you needed a reservation for lunch. We subsequently made a reservation for a few days later and had lunch. We choose the chefs special omakase bowl and it was a delicious. Just the right amount for lunch with great flavors and fresh fish. This is a tiny restaurant and reservations are must.

Great Find!

By Carolyn L |

The sushi chef is a rock star, complete with the sunglasses. The fish was very fresh and delicious. Huge selection of saki, most of the wine menu is written in Japanese but the servers are very helpful in sorting through it. I have been back to this restaurant twice because it was so good. Very consistent in quality.

Fabulous affordable sushi

By annadive |

Had their sushi to go and it was absolutely delicious! The staff was super friendly and the restaurant small but cute. Their menu was really interesting and made it difficult to pick what to eat. I would absolutely go back! If you're going to eat in though, I would definitely make a reservation especially if you are more than 2.

Incredible sushi experience

By Nathan_Boston123 |

I have eaten in over 50 sushi restaurants and this is one of the best. The service and food is outstanding. Allow the sushi chef the freedom to make what he recommends.

Wonderful sushi!

By Linda T |

This is a very intimate, authentic, sushi restaurant. The food and service were top-notch. We had several appetizers, drinks, and seemingly endless sushi. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food.

Great omokase - and watch some TV!

By cdpinNYC |

Wanted to bring my daughter out for some omokase and our favorites were booked; my wife found this listing in several guides, and it was close. Reviews looked good, so we decided to try. We will be back. Small restaurant, small sushi bar that seems reserved largely for omokase; they sat people later in the evening at the bar as well. Several large groups of Japanese businessmen drinking sake and loudly cheering the chef; seemed to bode well. We went for a mixture of sushi and sashimi (word of warning - make sure you've got an idea of the price of the evening; somehow the $80 omokase is for a pretty minimum round) and were treated to a remarkably inventive and delicious selection. It seemed that the chef warmed to us after a while, and when we hit the sushi bites, it went fast and furious; but ALL were great. A bit of scolding for using soy when directed not to, and we learned not to violate the rules. Sake selection is good. Fun atmosphere; they have TVs behind the bar that were playing Japanese TV dance shows that seemed to be from the mid 70's to 80's. Great energy and certainly off the radar. It was not cheap; however, good omokase seldom is. It might limit our returns, but we will come back.

Hidden Gen

My wife wanted to try this place for a while… What a surprise! The sushi chef is a blast of pure entertainment! He has two monitors playing 1980s-1990s Japanese music videos .. he is constantly interacting with the patrons at the sushi bar! We had the 10 piece special… and sake of course. I was given three sakes to sample and picked one! Just a fun experience.. Sushi you is not just about the sushi!

Mediocre

By Phil FR |

Cute little hole in the wall. Absolutely empty on a Wednesday night. Sushi was OK, but definitely not anything to write home about.

Delightful experience

By piermario |

The place is small and full of Japanese people which usually means real Japanese food. Excellent service, always friendly and kind, they make you feel the most important customer even if is crowded, The food was truly an experience full of wonder, explosion of flavors never tasted. Amazing sashimi and sushi. I thought I were in Tokyo not in New York. Great experience.

GOOD SUSHI AND SAKE

By Lumpy076 |

Vey small place but service was EXCELLENT. Sushi was delicious and portions were good. Many different Sake to sample. Reasonable prices.

Great sushi - superb service

By ErikJSO |

Tiny restaurant in basement with great, smiling and serviceminded staff. The sushi was of the best quality, and the chef was really creative - albeit sticking closely to Japanes sushi customs. We chose the chef-menu for $60 leaving it up to the chef to descide. For beverages we descided on ordering sake, and as a novice I got great help - even got to tast a couple to choose the one I preferred the most. The restaurant was busy, so the chef sent us a waiting-platter free of charge, and sent us a sake to toast us after the meal! Such service I have seldome experienced before, and truly hightened this restaurant experience to a clear 5-star category. Well worth it, but book in advance as it is tiny and fills up rapidly.

normal

By Alex R |

it is a normal sushi, service is good and fast, and the food you can eat whitout problems, well located

Outstanding food and service!

By AustinPiper |

My wife and I were in the area for the week and I read reviews about this place, which was near where we were staying - so we had to try it out. First of all, we walked in and the entire staff, to include the chef who was making sushi, said "Hi" and welcomed us in. There were two or three gentlemen sitting at the bar eating and drinking, having conversation in Japanese with the chef - that was a great sign to me! We ordered the Chef's Sushi Platter, Chef's Sashimi, and drinks. It was all fantastic! The chef checked on us several times and clearly wanted to make sure we were happy. Yes, it is a bit pricey and probably not a place I could go on a regular basis - but holy smokes it was great! There's the rub...good sushi just isn't cheap. There are plenty of OK sushi places for OK prices - and that is where most people end up going. This place is worth the trip and the extra cost - we payed just at $100 for the two large platters and drinks. We will definitely go back next time we are in NYC.

Great little sushi gem

Great atmosphere, lovely staff, delicious sushi but would have preferred no wasabi inside the sushi since the kids find it a bit hot.

Some of the best sushi I have ever had

By RME57 |

It might be the best sushi I have ever had. My basis for comparison ranges from eating at many sushi places in Japan, LA, and SF to working at sea in North Pacific for over ten years with Japanese wholesale buyers for Japanese fish markets. Sit at the bar if you can. The chef's choice omakase is a must.

Variety of fish and excellent service

This is small restaurant. There are wide variety of small yet authentic Japanese food. Lots of energy. Not for quiet business dinner Lots of good sake If you like sushi order chef omakase

Small joint with great, authentic sushi - cheaper version of Gari

By scyw |

My friend and I came here with the recommendation that this is a cheaper version of Sushi of Gari (which is by the way my favorite sushi restaurants in the world life to date). Overall the quality and price have confirmed this belief. We ordered a medium to top grade omakase (chef selection), and since we went early in the evening, the sushi chef was basically only serving us at the sushi bar. We had about 10 pieces each, finished off with a soup. I had 2 beer in addition, and after tax and tips my bill came to be $96. Great food with fair value.

Superb

By Aelwa |

The sushi was incredible. I had the chef's sushi omakase (where the chef chooses your dishes) and watched the sushi master prepare each piece from the counter, all delicious. The restaurant is tiny but has a lovely relaxed atmosphere; the staff were friendly; the sake was excellent. One of my best ever dining experiences.

Authentic little Sushi Bar

By Fred M |

This little sushi place a few steps down from the street was one of my favorite NY finds this year. Great helpful staff with a limited menu of which all That I have sampled has been very good. Don't miss the Toro when it's available. Great for a quick lunch. Always friendly folks.

sushi underground

By PURPLEYAMS |

Omakase here is just to die for. I had the time of my life enjoying the $90 omakase,it was a mixed of sushi and sashimi. I was first served the sashimi on a wooden piece of drift wood. Beautifully arranged. The highlight was the monk fish liver and generous slices of raw fish. The next course was the different sushi served 1 at a time. you have to eat it as it is served no soy or any other seasoning. The fishes were all very fresh. I can't believe what my mouth was experiencing. Everything was just melting inside my mouth.

lovely

Had tried the Japanese food all around but this place was simply amazing, loved their food and service was first class. Definitely recommended and will return back.

Good omakase sushi

By Owen L |

2 of us have a booking at the sushi bar on a Friday Night. We ordered omakase sushi. The server asks us how much we want to spend and we just tell them to keep the sushi flowing until we are full. The sushi requires minimal soy sauce/wasabi as it is already seasoned which is what I like. The fish is nice, the nigiri is good and I like their seasoning. However their fish is more the common kind which for me a 5 star place needs some exotic seafood that is difficult to find so it is 4 star for me.

Best sushi in the area.

By maggot65 |

As a very tiny place (room for 23 guests) it can get the best of fish. Not very cheap but still worth it. Good sushi just doesn't come cheap in NYC. Had some fatty tuna which was fenomenal. A nice touch serving the sushi on a beatiful wooden plate.

Great Option

By neverhome821 |

Great option for sushi, with very friendly service. Small, restaraunt with good local vibe. Fresh crisp salad, mouthwatering miso soup, and superb sushi.

Omakase -- just go there and taste it!!

By Artem Rodichev |

A small basement level place, which is not so easy to find. Still you'd better reserve a table in advance. This restaurant is really popular. I was alone so I sat at the bar and ordered Omakase - a chief's special set when sushi are served one by one. Chef told me a lot about the fish, how each sushi was prepared, how he orders fish from two markets and it is delivered every morning. Great experience and amazing food!

Without a doubt the best...

Quick Sushi Lunch

By Eric |

Great traditional Japanese style sushi. No frills. Tiny shotgun style restaurant. Full of Japanese patrons - always a good sign. Nigiri was good sized.

Fantastic sushi bowl

Welcome/ farewell party of guys at this intimate setting Sushi place. We are so fortunate that this restaurant is in midtown.

Not Bad....

By Marco69Polo |

I went to this place recently on a lunch date. It's a pretty cozy place in basement. It closes for lunch around 2.00 pm so they start rushing you at 1.25. We had ordered Sashimi Platter, Crunchy Salmon Roll and Destiny Lover Roll. They all were pretty good. One thing I like to point is that the fish didn't taste very fresh. I am not saying it was bad, just wasn't very fresh. I will give them a try for sure in future.

WOW!

By Mary M |

All I can say is wow! Some of the best sushi we have ever had! When we entered the tiny restaurant, all the tables but one were filled with Japanese people. Turns out they keep a reserved sign on a table to vet the clients. They explain that you have to spend $25 per person (no problem for us) and they had a saki brewer there to talk to us (she did not speak English but was lovely.). We have traveled the world and recommend this highly as some of the best we have had.

andor says: small restaurant with superb service and of course sushi

By andorsworld |

We opted to get the chef recommendation variety sushi (Chef sushi bar OMAKASE, which means it is up to you! :) We had three servings totaling 10 pieces of sushi I believe. Some were the usual ones and others were just new taste but exquisite. Great presentation as well and ambience. We had a glass of cold sake complementary upon completing our meal. Fantastic!

Great food for the money.

Omikase!!

By coeurdelion |

This small basement space on 51st street is a treasure. Come early and visit the small park across the street, complete with waterfall. We had the sushi/sashimi omakase and were thrilled with the variety and quality of food. Service, pacing, plating - all terrific. Please do not believe this review as I fear this place is so good that a reservation may become impossible.

Excellent Sushi, Felt Like Japan

By chinesesun |

We sat at the sushi bar and it was a treat. The more we ordered, the more the sushi chef gave us exotic taste portions of fish and creative rolls. The sea urchin was the best I can recall in the US, and was reminiscent of Tokyo standards. The place was crowded, with many Japanese patrons. Unusual location and access feels as though one might be entering a dungeon, but forget all else. The food was excellent.

Superb sushi!

By RRhona R |

My husband chose this after reading reviews and the family all love sushi. We walked from our hotel (Broadway) passed many other sushi restaurants to get to this one. What a find!!! My husband and I had Omakase which is the chef's tasting menu. The kids had sushi and sashimi platters which came with salad & miso soup as a 4 course meal. The kid's platters looked amazing- we watched the chef prepare them fresh in front of us. You can sit at the counter where the chef works to get and even more authentic dining experience. The tasting menu was out of this world. A selection of sushi made with speciality fish flown in from Japan. Fabulously fresh and melt in thr mouth. Taste sensation!!! Completed with miso and green tea. The staff were fantastic, explaining the different sushi and asked about any fish we didn't like and adapted the dishes to suit. Highly recommend this little restaurant - worth the walk. But subway is not too far either.

Excellent

Welcoming Service!

By Kenneth C |

I was in town for business and stumbled across this hidden place. Of course I did not have a reservation as I just flew in and wanted to grab a quick bite. They graciously squeezed me in prior to the evening rush. Let's just say I was very glad. The service and food was fantastic!

Great place tucked away from the rest of the city!

By Leigh H |

Although on the pricier side, Sushi You is an amazing little place hidden away from the streets of New York. It's small and cosy with extremely friendly and attentive staff. We ordered the 4 course meal each! It was quite good. If you like a bit of sweetness and something with a kick to it, order the plum wine for something different! The chef also gave us a glass of sake each on the house. Would highly recommend this place for quality Japanese cuisine!
