I could say that I'm a sushi lover. I've tried many places from tradicional to contemporary, trendy... this place is a must go but I can't say it's one of the best. Sushi seki is my favorite so far. They have some pieces that are similar and that I really didn't enjoy them that much since the version in seki are better from my point of view. But anyway, I would go back to give it another chance and overall I enjoyed my visit here. Last but not least, a negative point that I give to the restaurant, is that in middle of dinner we had to move to other place because we had to please other guests... not cool. My favorite piece was the one with quail egg and truffle oil...

This is an upscale sushi joint. My issue is this. We had the omekase, While some of the offerings were tasty, others failed miserably. An appetizer of three different offerings were absolutely terrible. Yuck! Both of us thought so. Some kind of fish congealed and sliced, an oyster sliced after it appeared poached- awful and I like oysters. The other: what the heck was that. Then came a series of sushi: some creative while others, again, not of omekase standard. We were hungry after spending $100. per person so we ordered an actual sushi dinner called a sushi deluxe. What is just a plain old shrimp doing on a deluxe sushi plate ? Plain whitefish? Just did not hit the mark. I will not return.

Took my husband here for lunch on his birthday today. Sushi of Gari 46 is by far the best sushi we've had. Decided to spring for the Signature Omakase and were thrilled with the choice. I lost count, but I believe we had 9-10 pieces each of the chef's choice. Incredibly high quality seafood along with interesting ways of preparing the sushi led to a culinary experience like none other. One needs to come with a deep wallet and know when to stop the chef from continuing to serve you more. Prices are high as others have stated but you get what you pay for. Our bill (with a couple of non-alcoholic drinks) was $237 with tip and tax. If you're happy with run-of-the-mill mall type sushi, this restaurant is probably not for you. For those who seek an authentic sushi experience, with creativity, well thought through flavors and presentation you'll enjoy Sushi of Gari enormously.

Ordered the Omasake menu, got 3 trays of 4 pieces each, only one of the items was intriguing and satisfying, all the other, you could find at any all you can eat sushi places in terms of taste for less than $25 for the entire meal. Extremely disappointed.

We took the tasting menu and it was unbelievable. Surprising taste and very creative chefs. Definitely not cheap but it was Worth every $$$

Excellent sushi. Expensive for what it is. Open for lunch - but they wont let you in before noon. $28 dollars for sushi lunch special - delicious sushi - waitress up sell was annoying. This is one of those pre-theater joints in Hell's Kitchen. As such it caters to tourist crowd and service is underwhelming and price is overwhelming. But the sushi was really good.

Sushi- very good- you can't go wrong! However I didn't get a sushi menu I had to order off of the regular menu. My wife had the teriyaki beef which was also very good. We would go there again. Watch what they charge you though. My wife had one glass of wine and I had 2 beers. When the bill came it had 2 glasses of wine and 3 beers on it. I really hope this wasn't intentional. The waiter who was very nice kindly removed the drinks we didn't have from the bill.

We just love Gari the chef. We have been going to his restaurants for the last 15 years. The menu he proposes is outstanding and the quality of the fish is out of the charts. He has Toro tuna and he also prepares a foie gras niguiri!! Never seen. Prices are high but are worth!!!

I had one order of omakase for over $100. I wouldn’t pay more than $8.00 for the outrageously disappointing slabs of stupid sushi pieces they brought out. Horrible. I felt robbed. Poor quality and tasteless. I was in shock to see what they served me. My hobby is eating all over the world. I live in nyc and I blame myself for coming to this tourist trap.

I agree with multiple review that this once amazing place hs gone in quality somewhat. I took several rolls and sushi and fatty tube was slightly subpar. That’s disappointing for Gari used to be considered top notch in NYC. The restraint has to put their things together and step up a notch.

We took the Omakase Sashimi & Sushi. Would really recommend it! Really nice place, friendly staff and just the best sushi we ever had!

The omakase chef's tasting menu is stunning for lunch or dinner. Impeccable service. Good sake selection. Expensive.

I've been to the other Sushi of Gari and it's been great. This one is along a lot of other pre-theater restaurants. Met a friend. I was in no hurry, just dinner. We had omakase dinner. The food came out quickly. My guess is that some of this is pre-made. Which makes sushi not always that good. It dies out the rice. The sushi is good; but not "amazing"

Very good place went there twice on my stay in NYC. The omakase is overprice, 100 dollars for 12 pieces of sushi. The nigiri was pretty tasteful but the sauces they add on top make them not feel like real Japanese food. The service was good, the waiter was nice and friendly. The only problem is the price, very expensive.

We had the Omakase, which is our favorite way to eat in this kind of restaurant. The charge is $45/person/serving. The ambiance here is the best of the Sushi of Gari locations from our perspective. We have gone back a couple of times. Enjoy! Reservations are recommended.

It has the reputation of being a refined sushi restaurant but were normal sushi's. Loud service, pushy waitress. All in all not bad, but not what I expected. Omakase menu at +- $150/180 per person. All in all its a little overpriced but good quality sushi restaurant. Haru has better price/ quality.

This is one of the best sushis you can find in NY, and it´s near theatre distrcit. Ask for the chefs suggestions

Excellent sushi, very fresh and tender. Really enjoyed the meal. only complaint was they overcharged my bill but when I pointed it out they apologized and corrected it.

I have been coming to Sushi of Gari 46 well over 9 years ago. The original Sushi of Gari is in the upper eastside. Gari himself use to be the head chef, at his age he is retired now but from time to time he will still show up and have his cooking staff at the ready. Seating is a bit limited in the 46 street location, but you can reserve or sit at the bar most of the time. Menu is true Japanese and they will ask if you want Omakase or the menu. The menu offers Japanese dishes and soups, delicious starters and fish dishes. You can also ask for a sushi menu which is separate, it will include traditional rolls however the quality of ingredients, flavor and preparation will have no similarity with any strip mall sushi. The fish is always fresh and the service is superior. It is a true Japanese restaurant, and they'll happily treat you to a nice serving of hot green tea at the end of your meal. The location is very convenient for those going to theater shows, and it is very close to several subway stations including Times Square.

We went with friends and got the omakase all around. Gari introduced his creative omakase to NYC about 20 years ago and is still going strong with a delicious mix of his original creations and some new ones. The food quality and service were uniformly very good, and the prices were actually reasonable for this quality of sushi. The 46th street location is pleasant and is particularly convenient to Broadway shows.

Dropped in on spec so no reservation and at first told yes they could accomodate us, then no, then at the bar only with the particular menu - OK no problem and thought we would get seated but a ten minute discussion back and forth between different staff ensued with us stood in the entrance, trying to let other customers squeeze past before finally we got seated. We had the series of little tasters and the sushi is pretty good, the plum wine one of the better ones I've had outside of Japan and the staff were pretty on the ball and pleasant but sometimes a little too attentive with an interruption to remove little plates or fuss over one thing or another every couple of minutes - this would be OK but in the slightly 'cosy' space at the sushi bar it was a little intrusive - not the worst thing in the world but just one more little thing. So the whole time we were in the place there was at least one empty table, not sure why we couldnt have sat there, and other walk ins were given seats at the sushi bar but were able to choose from the main menu - not sure why we couldnt? At the end they tried to charge for two bottles of the plum wine not one - at $90 a pop that's a pricey mistake - corrected quickly enough but with all the other little issues.... Judged on the experience alone I would score lower, the food has propped up my review as it is very good - but then at the very high price it needs. The issues are niggles but again at the price point they are aiming at niggles should not exist.

The sushi is very good actually excellent. However don’t expect to go in here and expect to order your favorite roll. The sushi chef will actually prepare you different rolls based on the different meal package that you order. I tried eight different pieces of sushi and also had a tuna roll with a beer and it cost around $50. Seems a little pricey but it is only blocks from Times Square.

Arrived after theatre, 10:15pm, and had suhsi & tempura shrimp & vegetables. Terrific. Service lovely. Restaurant was about half filled so noise level was perfect and we didn't have to make new friends.

We order the Omakase and where gladly surprise by all the amazing combination of flavors and ingredients use by the sushi chef, very fresh and tasty fish and seafood. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the service was really good. Don’t miss the Kampachi (Japanese baby amberjack topped with jalapeno sauce). Planning on going here on my next trip to New York.

Spent way more than I expected here. The chef did single item specially sushi just for me at the bar. It was delicious, gorgeous and a work of art, but it was very expensive.

This restaurant never disappoints. It is among the freshest sushi I have ever had and I have been here multiple times. Service is quick and polite and it is great for pre-theatre. Reservations are a must though because it does get busy.

We had a very nice time there: the beef teriyaki which was great and the staff is nice and very professional.

Sushi and sashimi are very delicious. Choice of foods are limited. It's mainly for traditional sushi lovers. Wine is quite expensive. Ordered a glass of plum wine which cost $18.

Was a little disappointed. This was my third visit albeit after almost 10 years. The Uni and sashimi was fresh but the sushi rolls failed to impress.

Choose the sushi sets if you have trouble choosing what to eat. Like most other reviewers said, this restaurant is quite pricey, but the sushi set is value for money. For the mid-range set, you get 7 pcs of sushi, a couple of gunkan and a 6 pcs simple maki-mono. This itself is enough for dinner. I have no complains and really only thumb-ups. The sushi are fresh and the raw fish like tuna and salmon melts instantly in my mouth. I only had this experience in Tsujiki, Tokyo previously. I have also tried their yaki tori and chawanmushi (special appetiser of the day). Not cheap, but worth it since they are delicious. Do make appointment for dinner. I realised it almost impossible to walk-in since most of the patrons already reserve for a table.

Went for a business dinner with local colleagues.. great expectations, only partially met..good menu and original sushi but definitely overpriced

We had theater tickets for a Thursday night and decided to have dinner after the play. We had made a reservation on a sushi place that had their last customers at 9:30 (bad timings since the play was longer). I had read on another app that Sushi of Gari was a good choice and closed later that night so I called and made a reservation. When we got there people were extra nice greeting us and making us feel comfortable. Waitress was very patience and helpful with her suggestions. Quality of food as amazing and we enjoyed the food very much. I had a chirachi (very recommendable ) and my wife had a Omazake (also amazing) . We left happy and satisfied.

I tried Open Table to book a table, but nothing was available. So, we showed up anyway and they were able to seat us before another reservation came in. I ordered the 9 piece sushi combo and it was terrific - a nice sample of standards like toro and salmon, but also some unique roles like salmon roe and scallop nigiri. It's a little pricey (my 9 piece combo was around $50), but the quality is very high. My colleague had the sashimi combo plate and thought it was outstanding. The only thing I would like to see are sparkling wines by the glass.

Best sushi I have ever had! Can't begin to describe it. WOW!! The foie gas sushi is beyond this world. Will be back for sure.

Went to Gari for our anniversary. We had the Omakase. Each piece of sushi & sashimi blended perfectly. though it gets pricey, its a wonderful experience. Drinks and desserts were great as well. Highly Recommended!

I've been to Sushi of Gary about 12 times since my first visit 5 years ago and it consistently delivers the biggest taste explosion of creative omekase I've found. I've sat the tables and that's great too, but the sushi bar is where it's at! The service is very attentive without being too formal; you'll get a got towel and they'll explain that the chef will keep making pieces until you tell him you're done; they'll ask if you don't like any thing (shellfish, eel, urchin, etc..). The experience starts with an appetizer plate, usually three very tiny bite sized taste of seared fruit, meats or seafood. Last time it was a sliver of smoked duck, a daikon mousse and a tuna tartare. Next course is a sashimi appetizer, two slices each of the most amazing toro, salmon and japanese mackerel. Then comes each piece a work of art - the spicy tuna is a bright red with a dollop of spicy oil and cream; then a smoky seared Japanese river trout....then a poached quail egg on hamachi drizzled with white truffle oil..... I usually get about 16 pieces and the chef will ask if you'd like to revisit any favorites... which I do. After the sushi, keep some room for the Lady M green tea layered crepe cake and a steaming cup of matcha green tea prepared in the traditional style. I've attached 13 of my favorite creative sushi pieces... I see a lot of complaints about the price... and yes, it's pricy but you get what you pay for and you'll leave satisfied and happy! The beverage list, however, could use a facelift; the sake's are just named but not well described, there are very few wines and beers to choose from... with no description... but I've always been able to sample a bit and the servers are quite knowledgeable about the options. I can't wait to go back!

Very good tasting sushi. If you are a fan of the traditional sushi cuisine you'll probably love that place. It missed my excellent due to the high price / tiny portions combination. Waitress: "What is your budget?" Me: "80$?" The very kind waitress gave me that, oh you are only ordering starters - look. I raised the bar to 95 to get this thumb up look. When the sushi arrived I gave her my, oh this is my starter - look. It was the whole dinner. For one person...anyhow - I understand the price & quality constellation...anyhow...somehow I missed a bit of restaurant design too.

Very nice and comfortable place. Staff very friendly and always ready to serve you. If you need a hand you will have more than 4 very kind waiters to help you. High Recommendation. The place is very relaxing with also relaxing music in the background. Great food of high quality. They also cook in front of you and the quality is unique. The color of the tuna was great. Highly Recommendation

Excellent service, great quality and beautiful arrangement. Maybe a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth it.

Unless you want to be robbed while eating I would stay away from this place. They force you into Omakase menu that varies on price depending on which way the wind blows. Have spent a ton of time entertaining clients at top NYC Restaurants and have never seen such deception. Food is average at best and service is good because they push while stealing your money. Eat at your own peril.

It's a cute place—cozy basement feel, but NOT your typical Japanese hospitality atmosphere. The Wall street business-turnover feel starts at the door with two white men in suits, presumably managers. You get to your tinny table and get slapped with a tourist feel omakase menus. We had to ask for the a-la-cart menus. We have lived in Hawaii for twenty years, and perhaps we're spoiled a little by the quality and authenticity of Japanese cuisine. The sushi was fresh, but fifteen dollars for one piece of UNI is ridiculous by anyone standards.(the server did inform us about the 'market' price). But that wasn't the biggest shocker, the price of San PELLEGRINO sparkling water was. Twelve dollars per bottle is equivalent of prices we paid in Michelin star restaurants. Sushi was fresh, service was okay (we had to remind the server for wine, wasabi, ginger) after our sushi was already on the table, but the atmosphere was very 'in and out.' My suggestion..., bring some authenticity back. Hire a sweet Japanese girl as a hostess, instead of the Wall street lookalikes. Adjust some of the prices and you will have plenty more return customers, who do know and appreciate good sushi.

Excellent sushi place on 46th in Hell's Kitchen. Tuna Gari is a must. Food is fresh and flavors are well paired. Sake selection is excellent. And do try the green tea ice cream.

Interesting selection of sashimi as well as sushi rolls. You may enjoy the special menu which includes 12 premium pieces of sashimi, however we found it overpriced. The sushi rolls are not expensive but not really special. The staff are welcoming and warm. The closing time of 22:30 makes it hard to go after theatre and it should be 23:00 at least.

A friend told me this was the best sushi in New York. I think if you order the omakase you get great stuff. But I didn't. The a la carte menu was nothing great. Good quality. Tasty. But for the price and given my expectations I was disappointed. Also: pretty busy and loud.

We are big sushi fans so we decided to try this restaurant on our trip to NY. It's one of the best sushi we've ever tried. We ordered Sushi Special and Sashimi Special. They offer top level service. The restaurant is decorated lovely. We really liked it and will definitely come back for more next year for our anniversary.

Highly recommend this sanctuary from the Times Square madness. Great sushi, excellent service, try the speciality sushi plate and some warm sake. Great cosy atmosphere with the NYC basement style feel. Small, so book or go after 9pm.

The shush is so fresh you wonder if it had just come out of the water! Delicious food. Lovely to see the chefs preparing the food as you order it. A quaint little place with great staff who are knowledgable and helpful. We loved it so much we went back for a 2nd time! Typical New York restaurant with the tables extremely close together but seeing it is a small premise they had no other option otherwise they would not fit many customers in - but you are aware of the other tables hearing your conversation. An extremely popular place with locals which is always a great sign of good food.

Had a great meal here with family. Awesome/fast/attentive service and great sushi. Wasn't cheap but recommend for special occasions. Had superior/medium priced sushi specials.

We decided to order the mid-level sushi dinners and were very pleased with all the selections that were presented. Our favorite was the mid-fatty tuna followed by the salmon roe. The tables are very close, but that gives you the advantage of seeing what your neighbors are ordering. Both of ours were going with the Omakase and when we go back we will definitely go that route as the selections there were quite unique. Many of the reviews mentioned the cost, but our dinner for two with a glass of wine and a beer was $95 before tax and tip, which for the high quality of the food was eminently reasonable. Service was prompt, but not rushed.

My husband and I visited New York last week to celebrate our anniversary. Coming from an area with extremely limited sushi options, finding exceptional sushi was high on our priority list. We initially planned to order from the Restaurant Week menu but sushi deprivation convinced us to order off the regular menu. After our server described the “of Gari” selections, I opted for the more traditional Sashimi Special because I was worried that I wouldn’t like the “of Gari” garnishes like seared tomato which just sounded weird to me. My husband chose the Tuna of Gari. It turns out my hesitation was completely unfounded. Both assortments of fish were delicious. I highly recommend any dish described as “of Gari.” In terms of decor, the restaurant’s interior is ordinary but it’s very comfortable and welcoming. Great service, too.

Truly Japanese..very authentic and very courteous and not very expensive..great location. Enjoyed with friends

my girlfriend took me here and she lives in Manhattan. It was small and quaint with really really amazing choices of sushi and sashimi dishes. This is the real deal. The inside was a bit dated which is only reason i didn't give five stars but the food, price and service are worth the experience. I highly recommend it.

I have been to this place several times over the years, as recommended by a local colleague. Last time was in Jan 2017. I usually just go with the chef's recomendations, which gives me a nice variety of different dishes. I have never been disappointed and I think this must be one of the best sushi places in the world. Amazing quality of fish. It was very busy every time I came there (proving that the food is great) and I'm glad my local colleague was able to make reservations.

Food freshness and quality are awesome. There are specialty sushis that's worth trying, new flavors to try and like. Staff is Japanese, very friendly and fun.

It's absolutely amazing place!!! Omakase!!! Best! I don't remember the name of this great chef (you can see him at the picture) , but everything what I ate was so delicious! It's crazy! U have to try it!!!

Had to make a quick business trip to NYC to meet with a client & friend. He wanted to take me out to lunch before I had to depart and I suggested sushi. He knows restaurants in NY and took me here. We sat at a table and not at the sushi bar. Nice ambiance and super friendly staff. I started with miso soup. A simple soup but when it is done right it’s excellent. This soup was excellent. Not too salty. A complex flavor as it should be. My main course for lunch was sashimi. The picture is what I had. Not a very generous portion but it was super fresh and delicious. My friend had shumai (steamed Japanese dumplings) to start and I tried one. Wow. It was just great. He had salmon teriyaki and loved it. The meal ended with a nice cup of really good hot green tea. All in all a great experience. Not bargain sushi but you get what you pay for.

Sushi of Gari never disappoints you. It has always the same quality and great service. It is a little expensive but it is worth the price.

This place gives "fast food" a whole new meaning. Plates were whisked away and I was asked "how was it?", while still eating. The check came unasked. The table next to me had their omakasi presented en masse, rather than being made and presented piece by piece. So, not a place for a leisurely meal. The food was ok. Normal miso soup, rather too much batter on the shrimp tempura, standard nigiri. Not exceptional, other than the high price. And $70 for 12oz of acceptable, but not special, sake is a rip-off.

A blend of traditional sushi with a modern take by putting a variety of sauces on the sushi. The sauces complement the sushi, not overpower the fish and cut. I usually get the Sushi Deluxe when I'm working late. Sushi of Gari is one of a few sushi restaurants that I like to visit in NY.

Stopped in here for a quick bite after work. The service is exceptional, and the food is really well prepared. The layout of the restaurant is elegant and accommodating. I definitely recommend this place.

This is a must visit especially the West 46th location. Book far in advance because the place is small and limited seating. The Signature Omakase is the best dish; very creative and delicious. The waist staff very professional and attentive.

I have had much better sushi at other places. Roll options are plain. The tuna was mediocre, They do not have white tuna or squid salad. I ordered Octopus sashimi and it definitely WAS NOT octopus. I believe it was raw squid but it had a strange mushy texture. The service was SLOW! For some reason several groups who sat down after me, kept getting their food while my sushi took forever! The waitress didn't seem to care when I asked where my food was.

I can always depend on getting excellent sushi here, from the basic and traditional items to their Omakase. The Omakase is where it's at...each piece has a unique preparation and sauce. No need for wasabe or soy. It's very sophisticated stuff. The restaurant uptown on Columbus is better than the one in the theater district, but I'm happy at the latter as well.

We went here for dinner after seeing a matinee play. The waitress was very attentive and I wish I had gotten her name to give her recognition but I didn't. We ordered the beef tataki as an appetizer, it was very tasty. The sashimi that we had for dinner was good and tasted very fresh. We also got some spicy tuna rolls and I have to say, they were by far the best ones my husband and I have ever tried. The vanilla crepe dessert was the bomb - so light, fluffy and delicious! We would go back here again for sure.

The food is delicious, fresh , feels like it melts in your mouth and you would never try another sushi like that one again. Although the price is very high

Been here a few times and always sit at sushi bar and have the omaksi, that's the chef select menu. This place is pricey but you get what you pay for, the sushi creation are UNBELIEVABLE! It is an amazing experience. Love the salmon with the warm roasted tomato on top!

Have to admit, best sushi I ever had. However, the price is outrageous. Had the omasake menu at $100 + 2 more rounds of 4 pieces of sushi each, cost me almost $200.... I think you're better of ordering some a la carte sushi.

The quality of the sushi is excellent, as is the service. The restaurant has a nice ambiance. Highly recommend!

Top of the line venue. Service was spot on. Sushi and Sashimi melted in your mouth and sooo fresh. One of the few places left who still sell fatty tuna sashimi. Tons of cold saki choices available, including a $2,000 bottle if you are willing to drop the hammer. You better bring your wallet to this place because you will pay NY prices, but well worth every penny.

Went here on my own while on a business trip. The food was fantastic. Sat at the sushi bar and watched the masters at work. Simple but acceptable wine list. Great place over all.

Outrageously expensive sushi and wasn't particularly good. Restaurant smelled of dirty, wet mop. Very inflexible about menu and choices and rather had the impression that sushi is pre-sliced. Yuk. Will never go back.

Small but so in demand need to have reservations to avoid waiting and being told no tables. The service is average and speedy. Staff is respectful and helpful. The food presentation is very attractive and definitely clean and inviting. Great variety of sushi and sashimi. Definitely would recommend for an interesting evening with loved ones.

This place reminds me of many trips to Japan. Gorgeous well prepared sushi, which I will never tire of. Been here a few times when I've needed a pick me up, it never fails to deliver!

We were lucky to get a seat at the bar that night and Gary was serving us, he got little hasty when I asked for the Wasabi paste and then he got little bold when I said give me one more. He surprise me with what I believe was a Quail egg on top of the Sushi. YUM

Trendy place. Quite crowed. The food is good and the price in line with this type of restaurant. Don't expect to stay more than an hour and a half as people will be waiting for your table.

Busy small restaurant with sushi bar in the theater district. Unique daily sushi specials prepared by top chef. Very polite service, fresh and very good sushi.

We had a roll combo which was delicious. The waiter was very helpful in choosing our rolls. The restaurant is located in a very nice neighborhood with lots of places to eat and drink. It is a quiet street, but only 10 minutes away from Times Square.

Amazing sushi- love their choices- tuna was so good and their various choices, fresh and melted in my mouth! Staff was quick and attentive. Champagne! Nice add on 👍🏻

We loved this place. Definitely don't go here because afterwards every other sushi place is disappointing. Bottomless green tea. And OMG the green tea ice cream rice balls. Very busy, can be worth booking. Staff knowledgeable.

This place disappoints. Not incredibly fresh fish, non-traditional and they put bizarre toppings on their nigiri so you can’t taste the sushi. Left us curious why a restaurant would do that when sushi is to showcase the fish. We came here for a quicker meal before a theater date, but won’t come again due to the disappointing meal and lack of atmosphere.

Dinner at Gari was suppose to be special. The sushi is overprice and average and below. To that add a pushy Asian waitress who is up selling the menus aggressively. Not cool. Experienced it once. Not going back or recommending to anyone

I have been to Sushi of Gari 46 and the food is always superb. All the sushi is so fresh and tasty. Great place to go for pre-theatre dinner.

I've had better sushi or Japanese dishes and didn't have to pay that much. Food is good but not that great. Service is definitely bad if you are not going for what they want to sell that day, especially after a musical. The waitress pushed us into something more expensive with every dish we ordered. Did not like the place at all. Felt I was being robbed in my face. Too much shouting from the waiting staff to the sushi men.

Although I don't consider myself an expert by any means, I love sushi and was really looking forward to my meal here but came away a tad bit disappointed. Granted, I played it pretty safe with my order - just got some otoro, salmon, salmon roe, mackerel, fried oysters and a shrimp tempura roll, certainly nothing exotic or extravagant so perhaps that's where I erred but regardless, the meal really didn't blow me away. The fish seemed to be about the same quality you could expect anywhere else. The fried oysters in particular were pretty mediocre. Overall very good sushi but for the price I think there are plenty better options in the city (though maybe not in the theater district).

Wanted to pop in for a quick roll. They don't serve hot food at the sushi bar so the hostess wanted us to decide what we wanted before being seated. Odd. Once at the bar, the waiter was a bit rude and told me about a $40 minimum at the bar. The hostess didn't mention this. He "let us sit here for one time only". Ha! Not very friendly but the sushi was very good. Anyway, the waiter warmed up to us and had a decent time. I don't really regret going but wouldn't necessarily go back. Not the only game in town.

we had the Udon soup (excellent) and 3 rolls of sushi (fatty tuna, fresh tuna and Eel avocado) that were just amazing. service was super quick

So fresh and carefully prepared. Great appetizers, salads, and sushi rolls. Great for pre-theatre as the service is swift and helpful. Would love to return.

We sat at the sushi bar and watched the chefs in action, serving a range of creative options to others at the sushi bar. We ordered basic rolls; they were fresh and tasty.

I really waited to write this. I started eating at the east side original location in the early 2000s. I’ve continued eating since then at all of the Gari locations since then. I LOVE Gari and their signature omakase pieces. But last three times in the past year I’ve been to Gari 46 after or before broadway shows, the Quality has dropped off to say the least. Salmon has been sub par. Tomoe ridiculously better. Honestly I’ve had a lot better in many places. Gyoza was not good either, shockingly, but it’s like they picked a different brand or supplier, it tasted so differently. I know sushi and I’ve eaten at the best everywhere, and Gari has lowered its standard unwittingly. Please change this. I used to love going here but now quality doesn’t justify the price. Without your “extras” on the pieces, the sushi itself has been not as good. Please fix this, and i say this as a customer who always loved eating here.

I'd like to be able to rate this restaurant higher. They accommodated me as a walk-in and the service (at least some aspects of it) was great: extremely fast, polite, and attentive. The sushi was excellent. But when I was deciding what to drink, the server suggested that I try saki. I have eaten sushi many times, but have had saki maybe once. Given my lack of knowledge, I asked her to bring me a glass of something that would appeal to most people, and told her I trusted her judgment. The saki was good, but when I got the bill, it was a $35 glass of saki. I am not naive. I live in a major city and frequently go out to nice places. I have been to NYC many times, and also have traveled to many other great cities, including Paris and London. I don't think it's appropriate to bring a customer a $35 glass of anything without mentioning the price first. That is quite a bit in any city, including NYC. I didn't ask how much it would be, but didn't really think I'd get what had to be on of the most expensive things on the menu. To me that smacks of trying to take advantage of someone. I didn't ask for the very best available: I asked for something that had broad appeal. Perhaps it was my fault for not being clear enough or asking the price, but it was too much and doesn't reflect well on the establishment. A $15 or $20 glass would have been just fine when asking for an open ended recommendation, and more appropriate than bringing the most expensive thing on the menu. No, I didn't say anything when I got my check. The restaurant was full and I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of other diners.

I was shocked at limited offering (and prices for lunch). I ended up having pieces of salmon and 3 pieces of tuna sashimi plus 4 oz. of house sake. No salad, no green tea...nothing else. Price: $45. The salmon was very good but the smallest piece of sashimi i've ever had (Japan, Canada, USA). The tuna was bigger (surprising because tuna is usually more expensive) but smelled old. Definitely do not recommend this restaurant.

Yes they are pricey but the sushi was of top quality! Enthusiasts will feast on exceptionally-prepared sushi/sashimi. Fresh and buttery-soft sushi rolls, so worth the $. You can definitely tell how much they pride themselves in the quality of their food. Would go back there again for sure.

I took the sashimi dinner platter. The quality of the fish was unbekievable. One of the best I've had outside Japan. When you have great quality sashimi, it's hard to go back to mediocre. If you like the fusion-style sushi with mayonnaise, teriyaki and all the other crap that's intended to mask the lack of flavor of mediocre fish, don't come here. If you appreciate real sushi, this is not to be missed. Service was good too, and as other reviewers have mentioned, this doesn't come cheap - however it's not mortgage-level prices.

Very welcoming and friendly restaurant. When they confirmed the reservation they asked what time our show started, and they asked again when we got there. After savory appetizers, we opted for the chef's tasting on the waitress' recommendation and weren't disappointed. 12 unique sushi creations, and while they came in 3 quick courses, we didn't feel rushed. The place is small, but even though it was at capacity, it didn't seem overly noisy.

First visit here and we all loved it. I celebrated my birthday here with family. We all know and love sushi, so I ordered the chef's omekase for everyone. What a treat! The flavors, the freshness, the service, the experience was perfect. Yes, it is expensive, but here, you really get what you pay for.

Sushi was excellent. My counterparts that had the tasting menu all agreed very unique and delicious...but at $110 per person. Desserts were also excellent. Service was very good and atmosphere was fine, nothing special. If more reasonable then maybe 5 rating but "anyone" could be great with these margins. If on expense account, go because excellent, but if not, be prepared.

I (Japanese) enjoyed enough any innovative sushi creations. Some are slightly cooked,or marinated, and served with a variety of home-made sauces or other delicacies which enhance the daily market's freshest seafood. ! was very much satisfied with its finest. 独創的で日本人にも新しい寿司テイストが味わえる最高のお店です。マンハッタンに4店舗ありますがここ「46」はタイムズスクエアからすぐの場所なので大変便利です。

Let’s face it. Times Square is the worst place you can eat a meal. Filled with tourist traps, it’s hard to navigate and find a decent meal other than your trusty chain. Sushi is no exception as there are so many in the area but this place is legit. I decided on the chef Omakase and I was not disappointed by either the food nor the price. Price is quite reasonable and you can get a good 12 piece for around $110. I overdone as always and end up paying double but still acceptable. The star of the meal was the Black Cod sushi. I had that fish before but never as sushi and it was divine. Better than the Otoro which was pretty good here and a nice big piece as well. The chef was speedy and professional as was the rest of the staff. The ambiance is not bad. It’s not the usual expensive wood counter but there is a nice cool vibe going here and I would definitely come again for some cooked food next time at a table. It’s not the best sushi but for sure the best in the area. It’s close by to Totto Ramen so I dropped by there for some yummy noodles afterwards but bring cash. In all, a great night at Times Square and would have made even better had I gone to a show later but oh well.

4 of us ate here on a Friday night, lots of Japanese families, which I took as a good sign. We ordered a few appetizers, the prime rib sushi roll was fantastic, the pick of the bunch. Of course, the highlight was the sushi and sashimi, super fresh and very creative. We ordered a bunch of the chef’s creations and actually ordered another round because they were so good. His play on tuna tartar sushi was phenomenal, as was the tuna with tofu. I won’t get into detail, as part of the enjoyment was watching the dishes come out and then tasting them, a very visual experience. We ordered a lot of sushi in the end! Add 2 bottles of wine and check was over $500, well worth it and just about average for a decent NYC restaurant. Recommended.

I'm not really a fan of sushi. That's why I was surprised when I tried Gari's signature sushi where each piece is individually designed. I said to my wife: "This is Michelin star level!" The waiter heard me and confirmed that they have 1 Michelin star. They have to work on their deserts, though. Would be nice in order to create a complete sense of perfection!

This was my first visit to this location. This restaurant has 3 locations in NYC. You go here because you want to experience Sushi - very excellent sushi! They have usual menu where you pick what you want, however it is best to go with Omakase - trust the chef. This location serves the sushi in 4 pieces per plate and you can order as much as you like, it starts off with an order of 3 plates. But you can continue going. The plate of 4 sushi is around $30 per plate. Each piece will be unique and will have the chefs signature touches on each one. It is a unique way of experiencing sushi, highly recommended for someone who wants to try primer sushi artistry.

Went for dinner on a Sat eve at 7:30. Not busy, however the ambience was still on the noisy side with the traditionally tightly packed together tables. We had great difficulty understanding our waiter, who suggested the Omakase at about $100 bucks each. We decided against, and ordered a Sushi Special, Sushi Deluxe, a Tempura, and a beer, to keep things simple. Food arrived promptly, presentation was excellent, and the fish very good. The only downside was that the bill was still almost $160 bucks with tax and tip. All things considered, there are a lot of good Japanese places that do the same quality for less. Worth a try based on a local recommendation, but probably wouldn't go back.

Having read several reviews claiming Sushi of Gari 46 had some of the best Japanese fare in NYC, my date and I recently decided to make a reservation for 2 for dinner. Upon arriving, I felt like a vampire, as it was so garishly lit, I almost needed to shield my gaze. The tables are so extremely close set, the couple next to us, began commenting in upon our dinner conversation, and the overwhelming cacophany gave me a blistering, migraine headache. We both decided to order the 'Omakase' tasting menu. *This is where the chef decides the pieces to serve to each diner. Our service was low and the woman who took our order barely smiled and I could not understand half of what she said, it was a bored, 'sing-songy' and rote explanation of each course. The total price came to $400. *This is without alcohol, mind you!* Listen, for the two of us to pay that amount, for what I have just descibed, it is an insult. I definitely expected a lot better service and ambience. I would never return.

Pretty good sushi for American standards. Near many other restaurants and nice places to visit. This is in Hell's Kitchen.

I've been here numerous times. It never fails to deliver. Many restaurants in NYC come up and achieve success that can't be maintained. Not so for Sushi of Gari 46. Don't mistake this for a sushi roll restaurant, this is a real Japanese sushi restaurant that provides delicious sushi and related dishes for relatively same prices like Nobu or other more expensive venues. See my pictures as they speak for themselves!

When my good friend suggested we dine here before our Broadway theater curtain, I wasn't quite sure it was a good choice. The tables are VERY close together, the ambiance unexceptional, but everything else at Sushi of Gari 46 is off the charts good. We had excellent service and finished our truly sumptuous meal in plenty of time to get to HAMILTON later in the evening. The sushi is not just 'good for the theater district', in my opinion it is absolutely first class. This restaurant has quickly become my favorite in the entire theater district.

Avoid the Omakase. Worse sushi experience ever. Broken and poorly presented fish over dry rice. Miso soup never arrived. We rejected half the plate and they still charged us for the whole lot. Terrible. When we left the manager argued with us how much we ate and never acknowledged any wrong doing. He even treated us with disdain and was dismissive of all feedback. He laughed at our faces. Unbelievable behaviour. Please stay away.

Interesting little place that tells a better story than it delivers. The wine list is small, good and expensive with very few options under $100. The sake list is a little better and the beer ok. Much of the sushi and sashimi on the premium list is seasoned or topped with mayonnaise so go the normal selections.

Glossy Restaurant Row eatery. Fairly limited menu, with what you would expect; they tend to push the set combos (quite pricey). Had a test hamachi sushi - A+-- super fresh, well cut. Then salmon teriyaki. Good with great crisp skin. Plate included some veggies and, weirdly, mashed potatoes (so-so). Absolutely outstanding service. Added treat - the rest rooms - you have to see them yourself.

I wanted Omakase for my birthday, and I had trouble finding a place open on Sunday. I was nervous because this was the only highly reviewed place open. IT WAS GREAT!!! I took two friends who had never experience Omakase, and I think they are converted. Top of the line fish. Also, a good intro for people not .... SUPER experimental with omakase sushi. Just perfect

The good: The space was very relaxing and appointed well, the service stellar, and the fish fresh and delicious. My friend hot some hot appetizers and was pleased. The Miso was most interesting (not salty) as was a delicious bottle of Saki. The bad: I am a New Yorker and am not consumed with price, however, what was disconcerting was that one order of sashimi consisted of 1 piece of fish, so 2 pieces of normal red tuna sashimi (one order in most restaurants) was $10. The Omakase was not priced fix. So, the restaurant was excellent but overpriced for its excellence.

Unusual sushi, all presented in amazing ways. Expensive, but worth the adventure and unique combinations and presentations. Sushi even more than most foods is about presentation. This place is over the top. You will be sure to enjoy the look AND the taste of the food

We loved this place. It was really good food and service. On the expensive side but is a really nice culinary experience

The sushi here is extremely good! Nice small restaurant with great service! Our waitress was amazing and very pacience to recommend and explain the doshes. Here are some pictures of what we ordered and I hope to ho back soon! Desserts were very goid too!

Terrific omasake experience. The fresh fish combined with the chef's creativity made for a perfect evening. The hard part is knowing when to stop eating. If you love sushi, you have to visit Sudhi of Gari.

I decided to dine at Sushi of Gari 46 as I needed a sushi fix. There are no shortage's of sushi restaurants in Manhattan. As a matter of fact Sushi of Gari 46 has at least 4 other sushi restaurants to compete with nearby with the closest being across the street. I choose Sushi of Gari 46 due to good reviews and being a shirt walk from my hotel. It is highly suggested to make reservations as it is a popular place due to it's proximity to the Theater District and being in Hell's Kitchen. On arrival You will be warmly greeted and then seated. I choose the sushi bar as I like to watch the chefs create the platters of sushi. I ordered from the menu a sushi dinner and then also some ala carte. The fish was very fresh, tasty, and presented well. I give Sushi of Gari high marks for the Uni which is served at market price. The Uni was fantastic and I indulged with 4 pieces of it. All in all I was impressed with the service and quality of the food. I will definitely dine here again when in NYC!

This small japanese restaurant, difficult to identify among so many small restaurant at 46th street, was a good choise during my trip in New York. Traditional sushis are served by japanese waitresses. The taste of my meal was wonderful. Everything made with fresh ingredients.

Tiny place, terrible service, limited option of dishes; waited 20 minutes to get a bottle of sparkling water. To the point that i stood up, paid and left. Don’t waste your time and money and go somewhere else, especially in NYC where there is so many options.

Sushi by Gari has a great reputation, and is a very expensive restaurant that I expected to suppor the recommendation. I was surprised that their selection of fresh fish was lacking. They did not have scallops, did not have anything different from the standards and would not make a roll with crab even though they had fresh snow crab. They insisted in using crab stick! In my opinion, crab stick/immmatiion crab should not be anywhere near a high end sushi restaurant. While they did not have fresh scallop, they were happy to point out that they did have a scallop role with cooked scallop leaving me to believe they cook the old scallops they had left over. The service was mediocre, with servers being very young and inexperienced, but very nice. Positive stars given for the delicious red snapper. For expensive high end sushi, this was not impressive. Won't return.

We are here on a business trip looking at food trends and researching restaurants. We arrived late from Chicago so we couldn't achieve our original plans and decided to try some sushi. The concierge recommended this place - it was a rip off. The food was under seasoned, the fish was old, the wine was expensive and poor and generally this place was a complete and utter disgrace! We tried to explain how disappointed we were and the manager wasn't interested and just tried to get us out of the restaurant so we didn't influence others - this was horrible! We have a chef travelling with us and he couldn't believe how poor the food was - mashed potato and crisps with teriyaki beef - what on earth is that? Ridiculous and ripping off tourists - Do NOT GO THERE!! We only have 3 nights in New York and we feel violated that they have wasted an opportunity for us...... We had water and not enough to eat and the bill was still 220 dollars - aaaagggghhhh!

No doubt sushi of Gari continues being the best sushi place in New York. Even for take away. I called 40 minutes ahead and the food was fresh and outstanding like always.

Three of us had a business lunch here. Sushi was good but I'm not sure it lived up to the outstanding billing given to it by colleagues. Maybe we caught an average day ? One thing did strike me - I like a bit of spice but can't stand wasabi. I therefore asked for a little hot sauce to go into the soy, eg Sriracha. Imagine my surprise when they told me that had none. When the gyoza were served, we were told that the accompanying sauce was a little spicy. "Oh good", I said, "can we have some more of that then please ?" "No", was the firm answer. I don't think I'll be recommending this place.

Had delicious sushi on a Sunday night recently. The restaurant was able to accommodate our dietary restrictions. Every bite was tasty. Would definitely visit again when in New York

We are big fans of Sushi of Gary.... but it's not the same nowadays... We usually go for Omakase at the bar. I think the quality of food is still amazing, but they are trying to make things different, and maybe they should stick to their original pieces that is what they do best! We were amazed about prices though.... we had an almost $400 per capita bill and I think is not worth it. If that is the price, you should explain it before starting to eat....Having said this, maybe if not doing Omakase again, we will be back.

We went to the restaurant without a reservation an hour before closing. I was told the bar was not available as they were closing it for the night but was assured there would be enough time for an omakase. I have been to Gari many times and I know they usually serve 3 or 4 pieces per round when having omakase at the table ( as opposed to one at a time at the bar) Although I find this rushed I understood as it was late. When the food came they brought all 12 pieces at once. Gari's pieces are special and some are cooked or have cooked food on them. Those were cold. The rice on the others were dried out. It was without a doubt one of the worst sushi experiences I have had in a high end place. When I asked if this was the new way they did Omakase I was told that it was the chefs choice after 945pm to put out all the pieces at once. Besides not being told this before we sat down I am sure you can tell what I was thinking. I left most of the food behind as it was inedible and paid although my wife told me not to ( I should have listened to her) Anyway Seeing some of the other comments here it seems that this is the new way they treat people. It is a real shame because it used to be a great place to go but yesterday I threw $300 in the garbage. Save yourself the headache. The high review numbers they have are from another era. This is not the same place anymore.

Sushi of Gari's philosophy is that since most people don't know how to eat sushi properly aka put too much soy sauce/wasabi on the piece, the chef will put the sauce on for you. Thus at sushi of gari they will not have soy sauce/wasabi available by default. Went there on a Sunday night and have sushi omakase at the counter. The server nicely remind us that the chef will keep serving until we stop him and it is priced by piece which is usual sushi practice but it is nice to remind those who never have sushi omakase before. Overall I find the place underwhelming. The main draw of this place is the chef seasoning and in general I find the seasoning too strong. I prefer the sauce to be lighter so I can taste more of the fish. Sushi of gari is a good beginner place for sushi omakase. If your usual sushi dinner involve California and dragon rolls this will be a good place to try if you will like "serious" sushi. However there are better places if you already past that phase and looking for better sushi omakase.

I dine out quite a bit, especially Japanese. The omakasi served at the sushi bar is beyond amazing! It is expensive but worth every dollar. The creations like the salmon with stewed tomato on top, or the minced eel with sliced avocado unreal! See you soon Sushi of Gari I will be back.

Had dinner here with a friend recently, and was quite happy with the food. Now, said friend is a sushi fiend who lives a few blocks away from this place, and eats here around once a week, so we probably got better than average service. But I'm pretty sure we got the same food as anyone else, and it was very, very good. Lots of preparations I hadn't seen before, with very fresh, melt-in-your mouth fish. The place is quite busy; I made a same-day dinner reservation, but didn't have a lot of choices as to times. One negative is that it can be quite pricey. I had three rounds of the omakase (12 pieces of sushi), ordered an extra sushi roll, had dessert, and a (non-alcoholic) drink, and paid something like $170 with tip. My friend says he usually gets one of the normal sushi assortments and pays a lot less: same high-quality seafood but not nearly as elaborate.

I would describe the sushi here as traditional and very well-executed. I tried the soba which was also very nice. Altogether a great menu. I recall they had sake and wine only, not a full bar.

Gari's is a place for serious sushi eaters. Food is delicious service is good, and great spot for pre -theater.

If you go to this restaurant for having Novel Sushi, it should be above four stars. But if you go to this restaurant for having Authentic Sushi, it should be below three stars.

When I go there I always order the special sushis ( they are not on the menu, you have to ask the waiter) . These special sushis is the reason why I always go back here. Get the salmon with the hot tomato, the tuna with the tofu sauce on top and the yellowtail with the the babyegg. My absolute favorites. And also get the salad with their house made dressing - delicious ! And some dumplings- always a good idea!

An excellent small restaurant in the theater district. They have a great service and a fantastic food but pricey. The staff is very friendly, competent and quick. It is good to have a reservation.

We got there Thursday night after a concert, and had an omakase dinner each. A set of 12 pieces of sushi and one clam filled with something. The clam was very good. The sushi - really nothing special. All were very simple, too simple, some nice (tuna indeed of highest of quality) some not that (code and scallion were average or less) and the shrimp ones were just bad. If all that came with a price tag of 30$ or so, I would think - ok. Whatever. But, with a price tag of 106$ each (before drinks, tax and tip) - it's simply a shameless shameful rip off. What a sham. No reason to go there. Next!

Our son took us here and it is surely top quality sushi. We ordered a la carts since we all like different things. You won't find any Dragon or Rainbow rolls here so don't bother. You must also play by their rules, I asked for salmon skin roll with oshinko but sorry, no can do. They serve both ingredients btw. Service is polite, setting is small and they're all Japanese which is refreshing. Bring your wallet cause you'll need it. All in all its was very good and I'd go back easily. The toppings on some of the fish are awesome as is the quality. Every bite is right on.

Really one of the best sushi I've had. I ate at the bar. I think there were at least 3 sushi chefs there working continuously. Had the sushi deluxe with 10 different nigiri and one roll. Everything was excellent. Fresh fish, just enough rice, just enough sauce and wasabi. Complemented it with a side of unagi, then of course spicy tuna. Even had the homemade banana bread pudding. Everything was high end, including the bill.

Saturday night before Christmas. Made reservations for just before 9 PM a couple of days in advance on OpenTable. Arrived early, our table was ready. Very friendly and courteous service. Not rushed at all. Enjoyed some appetizers and omakase. Sushi was seasoned. They recommend not using wasabi and soy sauce - but to enjoy the chef's seasoning. Great selections. Enjoy a couple of bottles of sake as well. Spent 2 hours here. Favorites of the evening - Fatty Tuna and Sea Urchin - both melted in our mouths. Price was expensive (over $400) but it was a very enjoyable experience.

The most delicious variety of Japanese food in one place, the buffet of sushi they offer includes soft drinks

My 9 year old and I ate here before a show. The place was packed but there were able to fit us in. The set ice was exceptional. My kid asked for something off menu and they accommodated with no problem. The yellow tail was delicious, the salad was fresh, and the chicken teriyaki was pretty good (but it's a sushi place so that was a risk). They got us in and out in 20 mins. Among all the tourist traps on 46th I would recommend this little gem.

Went Sunday eve, a place my son takes clients. Mostly Japanese clientele. Sat at the sushi bar and ordered Omakase. House Sake excellent. We ordered another--smooth as silk, crisp, and ice cold. Sashimi melts in your mouth. Very flavorful sushi. Save room for desserts, which are 4 star, worth a detour. Can't tell you what I had, but one was some type of layered cake, and the other was some type of ice cream wrapped in dough. What you might get in Japan for dessert is Miso soup and pickled vegetables. Not here. To eat cheaper, get the sake and the dessert.

Sushi of Gari 46 is a very high level resturant for the quality of food. We took two "omakase" menu, so the chef invented the menu at the moment, that's what omakase means. Every single piece of sushi was an emotional trip, the freshness of food was clear in the mouth. Every dishes were explained by the waiter. The equilibrium of the taste was the secret of the diner. Amazing. At the end we ate 7 fish-based pieces as appetizer, 6 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi and 2 extra pieces of sushi (not included in the omakase menu). There are few tables (maybe 10) and one counter, for this reason is better to take a reservation to be sure to eat here. The price to eat is high but it's worth the money. The rate is 4,5 but it's not possible to do it so I gave 4. Go for Gari, go.

Omakase heaven! Best sushi we EVER had. Such a combination of flavours that it simply blowed our minds. Can't wait to visit this place again!

Came here with my date on valentines expecting higher expectations, but the food was mediocre and the service was bad. They rushed us to leave within 25 minutes. I asked for the bar seating and they gave it to us, but we did not get the piece by piece experience. We were served 4 pieces at a time, and before I finished my sake pairing they shoved another plate on our table. The sushi was not made in front of us, but taken out from the back and brought to our table from the back. I explained to the manager how we feel rushed and not happy with our dinner, but he had the nerve to tell us with the seating arrangement we had in the bar, the chef would not be able to reach our side, instead of apologizing he had to make us feel like we were wrong. Thank you for ruining our valentines dinner.

Small place, friendly japanese staff which makes us feel like in Japan. Despite being very expensive (New York, afterall), it is very tasty and offers a different experience (there's even a sushi with tomato sauce).

It was late, we were hungry and tired. My guests from Japan (I am Japanese but from London) were craving food from home. We wandered about, not really sure what to eat as one place we tried was closed (mochu mochu), the queue for Totto ramen (where we had eaten lunch) had big queue and they were not up for anything else than Japanese. In fact, being a bit older than myself and not well traveled, they were even uncertain of eating sushi as they were afraid in case they got ill. After 20 mins or so looking at one place after another (rejecting one place after another), we stumbled across this restaurant that looked buzzing even though it was Sunday night. Ok, no Japanese customers, something one looks for in a Japanese restaurant but the staff looked Japanese, the clients looked happy and the place looked very tempting. We went and had the platter. Very well made sushi. We were very happy to have stumbled upon this restaurant.

First time in NYC, I knew I needed to get some sushi and this place did not disappoint, it’s a hidden gem I would say and the chefs on the line truly care about the food they are serving! I highly suggest sitting at the bar to watch their magic and try the special plate with their daily creations. Incredible place, service and food! Go here!

We loved it!! I have never eaten a so good sushi. The rice and all the fishes are great and you can taste each one. We ordered two plates of sushi: spicy tuna (the best one) and a variety of sushi with tempura (awesome!) and nigiris that was also great. We paid 120 dollars or so (including a dessert, one beer and two glasses of wine). Service great and really kind. It is not cheap but this sushi deserves the price!

An old faithful. Never miss this little place when in nyc, and never disappointed. Try anything in the menu and you will enjoy it. last but not least.... one of the best quality/ price ratios in town. Dont change Please!!

We had booked an Omakase dinner. This was over $170 per person. The chef gave us 12 pieces of sushi. At Takeda and Nakasawa we had twice as much for the same price. Don't go to this ripoff place! By the.way, we also went to Le Bernadin and 11 Madison Park, which were amazing! It isn't about the money as much as the disrespect which was evident at Sushi Gari in spite öf the fact that we have been there before. .

Quickly grabbing a bite before seeing a Broadway show, on a very crowded Saturday night, I sat at the sushi bar and watched these artists ,at work. The trio next to me were doing the sampling from the chef, with many tastings. I had my water bottle with me as I always do , and the waiter asked me to remove it from the counter and put it on the floor. I guess for appearance sake ..which was a bit annoying. However, the food made up for it. It was quite pricey, as I only had the tuna avocado salad ,and three pieces of sushi which amounted to $50. But.. it's New York! I highly recommend this place ,but you will definitely need a reservation on the weekends.

Not what we're used to but authentic really fresh sushi. Make a reservation its a busy place. Beautiful décor. Have the eggplant appetizer. DELISH! Sit at the sushi bar. Very cool to watch the chefs in action.

Sushi of Gari is a great little sushi joint! We stopped in on the recommendation of a local. Great atmosphere, great food, awesome service- We made a reservation, I would advise this- Unique green tea crepes and they were also offering a green tea tiramisu- the crepes were delicious- Very clean and worth the visit! We had the Gari deluxe and the regular for our dinner, it offered a good variety of sushi-

I come here regularly. The quality of the food used to be better and the service was immensely better. They had the same staff for a long time and now every time it’s someone new which is never a good sign. The service has seriously slipped they mess up orders, they are rushed and it’s overall not that great of an experience. It’s a shame but when you start trading on your name to open a bunch of restaurants that’s what happens...

Excellent service, and the perfect sushi come together at this restaurant. Serious Japanese food to be enjoyed. I can only say that Sushi of Gary is a great experience you can't miss.

When we walked into this restaurant the man at the front desk greeted us with all the enthusiasm of a disgruntled postal employee. He never looked up from his computer. His only words were "We need your table by 6:45." Gruffly. My partner had several appetizers some of which were tasty - chicken meatball yakitori which was tender and not too sweet. A bland fried chicken dish. The "regular" Sushi was tasteless. The tuna roll that came with it was fishy. The waitresses were pleasant. But I wouldn't come back.

We came here for an early dinner on a Saturday and were not impressed. Appetizers included kabocha tempura (which was great), goma-ae (passable), and eggplant (too sweet). We had both nigiri and sashimi, and while the sushi is fine, it's nothing special; in particular, the toro was not what you would expect for the price. Conveniently for the house, they were out of one of the only two affordable sakes on the list. Worst was the service: we were in and out in 45 minutes, even though we were not trying to make it in time for a show! The waiter (who spoke no Japanese and barely spoke English) came to the table so often, moving things around, wiping this, rearranging that, that it felt like it was three for dinner. So while this is a popular spot, clearly the main thing that keeps it going is its proximity to the theater district. There are many better values within a 5-minute walk.

This place was great, the waitress was very helpful in explaining the different options. Our omakase plate was delicious, the scallion and fatty tuna pieces were our favorite!

My husband and I love sushi, and have eaten it all over the world. The sushi here was gray, Chef's Special Roll was terrible. Very limited and confusing menu. But somehow, the tables surrounding us had bright, beautiful pieces of sushi! If you are not a regular and don't know the "secret" items not listed on the menu, DO NOT EAT HERE!!! I even asked a staff member where on the menu the people next to us found such nice things to order, and he admitted "they know what to order, it's not on the menu." Not even a section on the menu listing a la carte sushi. RIDICULOUS!!!

We came here on friend's recommendation and it was an amazing experience. The first impression when you make it to the door is hmmmmmmm. The decor is a bit dated and the place is not too big. Well, that disappears from your mind very fast. The staff is very friendly and, more importantly, knowledgeable. We got a great recommendation on the best sake we have ever had and followed the recommendation for having omakase ("leave it to the chef"). Our first time. and it was impressive and amazing. Fish and the preparation was exquisite and I would highly recommend it if you can tolerate the price (about $130/pp).

Was able to get a same day time when other "hot" sushi places were booked. Really good fish, had the chef's choice and while good had alot of different (and good) sauces. I prefer simpler and asked and got the sashimi menu (only got the chef choices in the main menu). Still, really great experience and liked the sake!

We went with our Japanese friends, who know sushi. We had soft-shelled crabs for starters and then an assortment of sushi, about 18 pieces per person. The server described the various sushi servings and also recommended which one to start with and one to end with. While I am no connoisseur of sushi, this was the best I've ever had. The condiments and seasonings were distinctive and worked very well. The restaurant was attractive and the service excellent. But be prepared for a high price. We had some expensive sake, and that added somewhat to the cost. But for the food and drink described for 7 people the cost came to $740 including tip.

First - Rate venue. Good service. Excellent Japanese food. Not traditional; has a bit of a "New Japanese" approach. In-general Japanese clients approve. Will return for both lunch and dinner. Keen to sit at the sushi bar.

I have been fortunate to go to Sushi of Gari several times with client. If you can expense it, the food, the service and the ambiance is remarkable. That being said, the prices are just outrageous ; in fact, I only take my top accounts - otherwise hard to justify. Tonight: omakase for 2 with water - and no alcohol or desert: $450 and I added 20% tip.... insane.

Unbelievable, exciting, amazing, delicious, addictive. The chef's choice was the way to go. Tiny shaved jalapeño on top of yellowtail, a tiny dot of wasabi on a zigzag of squid and seaweed, more. It's all in the details. Get ready to singe the credit card.
Gari knows his sauces and marinades and uses them to create a tasty meal
Sushi of Gari 46 is know for his ‘Signature Omakase’ dinner which shows off his expertise with marinate and spiced raw as well as slightly cooked ingredients. We started out with Gari’s hot sake and Sapporo beer coupled with edamame while waiting for our grandnephew, the ‘Food King’ from Seattle. He who knows sushi had not arrived yet. Due to a street fair on 8th Avenue, he was detained. In the interim, Arlee ordered some Nigiri sushi rolls including spicy tuna and spicy scallops. Upon Cole’s arrival we ordered a second order of spicy tuna and yellow tail with scallions. After finishing this off along with the edamame, he proceeded to order Unagi (eel), Ororo (fatty tuna), Ebi (shrimp), Hamachi (yellow tail). That boy can eat and knows the various Nigiri in Japanese too. I had a sashimi dinner consisting of 15 pieces of sliced raw fish, including shrimp and seared items which arrived with a side bowl of rice. Gari Sushi is located in Restaurant Row on 44th Street, easily accessible for anyone attending theater on Broadway. Chef Gari knows his trade. We were impressed with his expertise in the use of sauces and marinades. Everything was delicious.
