We dropped in on the Tang Pavillion during a family holiday in July. We phoned up to reserve a table, and were told "yes, there is one available" said with all the empathy of a mortician. We then arrived and, having been greeted with again an almost deliberate absence of emotion were taken to our table. From that point onwards, we were looked after to the very highest standard. In some sad situations at restaurants, the front desk is unbelievably great but let down by the dining staff, and in others (more often) the front desk is way up itself, but the table teams are great. This was bizarre as the chap looking after us was the same guy throughout - on the telephone, at the front desk and at table, and in his latter role he was absolutely outstanding. The food was very very good. Particular highpoints were the duck (inevitably with too few pancakes but they brought more - great plum sauce), the beef in blackbean sauce and the chicken and cashew nuts. I even liked the sweet and sour chicken which my daughter and wife continually order at Chinese restaurants so as to avoid me raiding. They do a house green tea for free, but we were steered towards their jasmine version for which they do charge, and it was really very very good. Not a big investment but I would certainly do the same again. This is not overtly high dining, but at the upper end of honest Chinese restaurant fare, and it is priced at a level which is low for a Midtown location. The true measure of an ethnic restaurant is whether the population of origin dine there. Whilst not 100% full, the pace was buzzing and I think we were the only non-Chinese customers. Praise indeed.

Having lived in Northern Virginia for many years, we considered Peking Gourmet Inn in Alexandria, VA, the standard by which Chinese restaurants should be judged. Now that we live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we wish we had access to good Chinese food. A recent trip to New York City gave us the opportunity to mollify our withdrawal syndrome from Chinese food. We headed to Tang Pavilion on the recommendation of an acquaintance. Tang Pavilion is centrally located and not difficult to find. The front of the restaurant is small. We were escorted into the main dining area that was brightly lit and sterile. The walls were decorated in a pattern that reminded me of the sides of a Xerox machine. The level of noise was actually low, since everyone appeared to be furiously texting while we were there, except a man with his young son, who devoured their dinner without exchanging a word. We ordered fried dumplings, vegetable rolls, General Tso's chicken and sesame pork, which were all good, but not outstanding. The staff was attentive and efficient. There were no primal noises coming from the kitchen while we were there. With a glass of wine each, the check added up to about $35 per guest. In all truth, the food was not bad, although the overall experience was rather pedestrian. Probably someone with more knowledge of Chinese food could find some treasures on the menu, or ask the chef for something special. We recognize we have been spoiled by Peking Gourmet Inn, as our biases are determined by our previous experiences. Dinner was acceptable, but not memorable; Tang Pavilion is as charming as an aisle at Costco. Next time we feel the overwhelming urge for Chinese food, we will head for Northern Virginia.

It was lobster cantonese style, an old NY chinese dish, that is exceedingly hard to find. with yelp's help i found this one near our hotel. They offered it, so carry out we did. I would try Tangs again but in NY like everywhere there is an attitude of efficiency rather than customer service.

Found this place by accident when looking for some better food alternatives near the Hilton Hotel. Very interesting traditional dishes served in a very classy manner. Real china and charm as well as a warm, welcoming staff and waiter. Nice to have been seated in the back room instead of near the front door when it was cold and rainy outside. Good value for NYC and definitely want to return to this place many times.

Went here for lunch and thought the food was very average. Maybe I did not order the right thing, but did not enjoy it.

Dumpling eased or fried : do not order those !! Just Awful !! Service: ok Never again for us! Bad experience.

Looks like a whole in the wall but once you go in, the ambiance is just so nice! The service and food is GREAT!!!! Will go back again!

One of the best Chinese restaurants in the city! I have tried several different items offered on the menu and cannot recall being disappointed in the least! Highly recommend!

After a day of tourist activities in New York, we were famished and looking for Chinese food nearby and we ran across the Tang Pavilion, which touted its Shanghai Style Chinese dishes. I lived in Shanghai for a while. Prior to the meal being served vinegar picked cucumber was provided along with Peanuts. We ordered Sweet and Sour Crispy Fish, Mei Cai Kou Rou, Won Ton Soup, and an Egg Plant Dish. The meal came with white rice. The dishes were just was I remembered them in Shanghai and they were delicious. Finally, the meal was topped off with complimentary fruit, just like when we ate in Shanghai. In addition, the attendants were well dressed in black suits that were set off by the light creamy color of the restaurant interior. The atmosphere felt rich and welcoming. Definitely worth finding if you are looking for Chinese in the area.

Very disappointing - food is for people who do not know Chinese cuisine. Not inexpensive. Really annoying woman employee talking loudly and incessantly in front room of the restaurant with no concern for customers trying to have a relaxing dinner. No manners at all. Definitely not worth a visit.

Nice Chinese restaurant on 55th and 6th. It’s bigger inside then it looks. Food is enjoyable and overall reasonably priced. Recommended.

An outstanding restaurant visited by locals and tourists alike, with wonderful cuisine and outstanding to tasting dishes would definitely visit again.

I just ate the chicken with broccoli and I am experiencing cramps and pain in my stomach. That's on top of delivering white potatoes instead of yams in my other course, which I did not eat.

Very disappointed. We had been there several times 6 and 8 years ago. We were satisfied with it. What happened ? Empty room, dishes obviously prepared well in advance, "cheap" taste, shrimp dim sum with shrimp paste, imperial chicken not imperial at all, it's sad!

Working in the neighborhood for over 11 years, I have frequented Tang Pavilion over 9 times. Consistency of the quality is never compromised regardless of the day and the crowd. Tang has a few signature dishes but they are always willing to work to satisfy any specific preferences. Each person assisting knows the menu all too well. They recommend dishes after listening to your choices. The soup dumplings are always great! The duck, shredded chicken are also popular items on their menu.

We have been to Tang Pavilion before and returned because the food was good and the portions were large, BUT . . . This time the food was mediocre and the portions were not large. We were a party of 8. The restaurant is beautiful. A very classy atmosphere. The waiters are constantly attentive but not pushy. I give them a 5 stars. I ordered the Chicken with orange sauce. I asked if it came with vegetables and I was told it came with steamed broccoli. The broccoli was cold and quite al dente. I like my vegetables to be cooked soft. The chicken was batter fried which I like but the pieces were small and it was ALL DARK MEAT. I am accustom to my chicken at chinese restaurants being white meat. And there was not enough. I always expect to either be stuffed at the end of the meal and/or take home the left-overs. Neither was the case. Everyone else at my table was disappointed with their meals too. For the high price that we paid for our meals we EXPECT more than this.

Having been walking for blocks since morning, we were actually looking for some other Chinese restaurant next to an Irish pub on West 54th Street. Yet we missed our turn and ended up finding this place on W 55th St, also next to an Irish pub! Food was definitely authentic, service was passable, and the ambience was classic. Ordered the General Tso's Chicken and the dish did not disappoint. Not many restaurants can survive a random discovery, particularly when we already had another place in mind, but this one managed to exceed any expectation.

Very good, authentic Chinese food. The tastes are uniqueand different. Quick service and nice atmosphere.

I was told to try this Chinese, but truth bd told, it wasn't any better than the average Chinese place in mall. We made a reservation same day, but they still sat us at bar and forgot about us. No refills, my husband got his a full 5 minutes after mine, and the place was dominated by an older man that literally screamed at everyone. Try somewhere else

Me and my friends go here sometimes if we are in the mood. We like the food and the location. It can be a little noisy if busy, but not too much were it is overwhelming. The only thing that kind of drives me crazy is from the moment you sit down, the staff is already rushing you to get out. The minute you put down your fork, they are rushing to get your plate - even if there is still food on it. They actually stand and watch you - it is a little unusual. The prices are mid-range - typical for this area. Again, I would recommend the place, just don't be put off by the staff.

Everything about this restaurant is Chinese: chairs, walls, art, costumes, etc. Which is to say, that it is rather bland. So is the food. I'm sure there are much better Chinese restaurants in the city, in the neighborhood. Very average.

Reasonably priced authentic Chinese food. Decor is lacking and do not be surprised to find that their credit card machine is broken but the food is excellent and the service is well, normal for a Chinese restaurant. If you are in Midtown it is a very good choice.

What a welcome surprise to see that the Tang is open again - inside and outside. This is agem of Chinese cuisine in a classic setting. It was the perfect top off to an afternoon at the MOMA around the corner. One of my favorites in the city.

Worst experience in a restaurant ever, kitchen staff sounded as if they were murdering each other whilst we were trying to have a relaxing meal with our two children, the staff and management were very unapologetic and did not appear to understand our concern whatsoever, like Faulty Towers without the laughs, honestly AVOID and find somewhere else!

the food was good. But I am very sensitive to MSG. I think they must of added it to the food since I had a reaction.

We stayed in Hilton Midtown for four days. We chanced upon this restaurant on the third day of our stay, on the walk back from Microsoft store where my two boys played video games. We ordered chicken, stir fried mutton, a steamed fish and a vegetable dish. Having dined in Toronto for ages, we are used to high-quality, authentic Chinese food. In my opinion, this restaurant is on par with all the top restaurants in Toronto, and arguably better than most. If you like Americanized Chinese food, don't dine at this restaurant because you would be disappointed. But if you like gourmet, genuine Chinese food, this restaurant will not let you down. The prices are very reasonable too. Perhaps shockingly cheap is a more apt description. We regret that we could not dine at this restaurant more often.

I was staying at a hotel close by so got food to go from this restaurant three times during my stay. The food was good, was prepared quickly and the price was very good. I never ate in the restaurant, but noticed that nobody else seemed to either. Twice when I went in to order, there were no tables taken and the other time, only one table was in use. Odd, because it was very clean and upscale. Regardless, the food was very good and I would definitely recommend them.

Over priced and sub par food. Have had better food at a buffet. Fried dumplings were bland. Mei fun was also bland and general Tsao was very average. Nothing tasted fresh.

Don't get the ribs, they were like shoe leather. The chicken with snow peas and pineapple was good. The vegetable dumplings weren't very good

First of all, let me say that this restaurant IS open on Saturday night, contrary to the times currently listed on this site. This is an absolutely wonderful Chinese restaurant with an extensive menu, good prices and the most wonderful food! My husband usually orders pepper steak and he said this was the best he’s ever had and it looked great (pepper steak is not on the current menu but they will make it). It was colorful and full of crisp/tender red and green peppers, onions and thinly sliced steak. I had my usual cashew chicken and it was also excellent. We had vegetable rolls (four for $10) and they were crispy and delicious. A glass of the house merlot was $8 and very tasty. Our service was fantastic. Tang has a lovely interior with two separate dining rooms, white tablecloths, many Asian vases and other artifacts. It’s upscale enough for a special dinner out but casual enough for any dress code. It was a truly wonderful experience and is in the heart of Midtown hotels and easy access. Try it now!

Very good food, super fresh ingredients. Our go to restaurant in New York for comfort Chinese food. This time the experience was marred by a tipping issue. We left $10 as tip over $100 bill but the tray came back, saying it was too less. Now, if they must enforce 18% or more tipping, they should include with the Cheque. Otherwise it must remain patrons’ discretion. All this when the service is barely acceptable.

We found this restaurant by chance , don't let the scaffolding around the front of the restaurant put you off , it really is worth a try. The food was of a high standard with good size portions that can be shared . Service was efficient , and the vodka and diet cokes were huge ! If you are in the mood for some great Chinese food at a reasonable price I would highly recommend a visit

A tasteless place, shamefully recommended to us by our concierge at the St. Regis hotel. The food was inedible, the service was mediocre. They would not even take our heavy coats away which we had to carry on our chairs. Unpleasant, low ceiling, claustrophobic environment. A place to be avoided in mid town Manhattan.

We had a great lunch at Tang Pavilion, the food was delicious and well presented, the portions generous and the fresh fruit at the end of the meal was a really nice touch. The décor is plain but elegant, he service overall was good but the waiters spend too much time talking to each other and playing with their cell phones, they may have been bored as there were very few tables occupied. I would go back there anytime I am in New York, better than China Town.

A quiet very god Chinese restaurant on 55th street, accessable to Rockefeler Center and City Center and Carnegie Hall. The food is wonderful, the service is good, and the selection is a little different than typical Chinese

Those who follow my reviews know that it takes a truly terrible restaurant experience to prompt me to give a One Dot Review. Trust me, this place has earned it! The restaurant’s interior is pleasant. That’s where the good ends. The woman at the front of the house was and is wholly incompetent. As is often the case with incompetents, she compounds her incompetence by blaming her customers for that incompetence. Then, there’s the service. Slow, uncaring, and completely unacceptable. Then there’s the crap that they call food. Stacey had the packaged steamed shrimp dumplings. They were served in a stainless steel steamer accompanied by a dipping sauce. Nothing “home made.” So very mundane. So very not worth the price. My lunch, which was significantly delayed because of the incompetent woman’s failure to put in a take out order, was the lunch portion of Chicken with Garlic Sauce. It consisted of a tiny portion of overcooked, rubbery chicken served with shreds of celery in an over-sweet sauce that was far more sugar than garlic. As I said to Stacey, “I’m on a diet and this garbage is not worth the calories.” I left the majority of that “dish” on the plate. Perhaps it’s a blessing that their portions are so pathetically small! I’m looking forward to dinner ANYWHERE other than here. Run away from this terrible restaurant!

We arrived and within 3 minutes we had our starter, before we were half way through they were trying to take the plates away to serve our mains. The waiters did not clear the table! The food was served cutting across our chest! Whilst eating out mains again they were trying to clear our plates!! We were then told..."we are closing soon so eat up!!" What the hell!! So we decided to not leave a tip! The food was not cheap! The manager then announced very loudly "you did not leave a tip!!!" I then informed him that it was the worst service we had ever had and he did not deserve a tip! He then discussed with the next table his annoyance! They then said they agreed with us and they also felt very very rushed and they were equally unhappy! I would never ever recommend this place and the food was beyond average and commercial. Terrible

Yum, what a find in midtown Manhattan. Everyone was very nice and the food was delicious. We had chicken and broccoli and chinese beef (so tender) get the veggie dumplings. Whenever I go to NYC I want chinese food but since I didn't have time to go to Chinatown, this was awesome.

For 20 years we've been going here. Consistently fine quality, but be aware of the sweetness. We have become more accostomed to spicy. Tang acknowledges the changing tastes with many Sichuan/Hunan flavors. We always ask for a side of chili. A bargain on alcohol with under $9 for called cocktails. White table clothes and attentive service completes an excellent experience of relaxed dining in hectic midtown.

Went here a few years ago and thought I would try it again. Was disappointed. It was quite expensive and the meal wasn't that great. Was't bad, but for the price, it could have been a bit more flavoursome.

Enjoyed the food. Service was good if a little over attentive. Reasonably priced but the automatic addition of a large tip always leaves me a bit annoyed.

Great food for takeaway or sit in while on a short trip to NYC. The staff were friendly and attentive. I would definitely retire if I was back in the locality.

Luckily me and my party stumbled across this amazing chinese and we were so happy that we did. Food is reasonably priced and the portions are very good, food is sooo tasty and have a good variety of chinese dishes on the menu also staff are so nice will do anything for you very attentive! Would tell anyone going New York you need to go here !

Adequate, old fashioned food and servers. Adequate dining room and yes, there were plenty of Chinese people eating there.

Met my best friend here for lunch. The restaurant is laid out with a narrow corridor with tables on one side and a very attractive large dining room in the rear. As a dumpling nut, I had the steamed pork dumplings and some cold sesame noodles. The dumplings were very good but the cold noodle sauce was bland and lacked kick. My friend had fun noodles with chicken that he did not like and after tasting them I agreed. I would rate the food as ok but not great!!!!! Service was good.

We were eager to eat a nice Chinese dinner during our stay in New York. We found Tang Pavilion on TripAdvisor and decided to give it a try, as the menu looked good and extensive. Althoough the food itself was fairly good, the service was lacking throughout the dinner, and it was difficult to the the attention of our waiter, or any waiter for that matter. Then towards the end of our meal my daughter found a hair in one of our dishes - totally unacceptable. To cap it all off, as we were leaving, a waiter was eating food in the open portion of the restaurant. Not what we had hoped for our dinner out in NYC.

The title of this review says it all. We were staying at hotel and wanted something reasonably priced for the whole family, that we could bring in. Tang Pavilion fit the bill. Ordering online is very efficient and promised time for pick up was spot on. For Manhattan you will likely not get as much for your dollar anywhere. We had dumplings, moo shoo duck and a number of other dishes. All were average or slightly above average. If you are looking for something easy, cost effective and simple, in Midtown/Times sq area, I highly recommend it.

Excellent place! The service is extraordinary; very friendly and efficient. They offer a good variety of dishes and the garzones explain them well. There are preparations for all tastes and meals from various Chinese regions, so all diners will be happy. The dishes are accompanied by white rice and add a couple of sweets for dessert. They offer a good variety of oriental beers and tea.

Ownership has changed and while the decor is vastly improved, the food is really bad. The dumpling sauce was just soy sauce, and the stuffing was badly spiced and bland. The fried rice was tasteless and inedible. Threw all of it out.

While working in NYC over the summer, I came here several times for Chinese food. They have great dumplings, fantastic sweet & sour chicken, and every beef and noodles dish I got was very good, as well. I think Tang is much better than rival (and the more expensive) Shun Lee.

The Tang Pavilion was a big disappointment. We should have known to turn around while we were being seated -- brusquely by a rather unfriendly member of staff. Staff performance never got better -- all about the same, unfriendly, treating us as though we were rather more of a bother than customers. The food was basic -- the sort of Chinese one would expect in a small town "Chinese" restaurant which did not have a Chinese cook. Now we know why the place was only half full of diners. We will not be back.

Went to Tang's on Saturday night with a family group of 14 (ages 17 through 67). We sat at a very large round table with a big "lazy susan" in the center, and everyone had a great time. The food was good and served quickly and hot by waiters with arms long enough to reach between us to the turntable. And the price was quite reasonable even with a few drinks for some of the men. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs, even though he was working additional nearby tables. Everyone agreed that this is the place to go in mid-town Manhattan for Chinese when we have a large group.

Conveniently located on 55th Street just east of 6th Avenue, Tang Pavillion is the place for authentic Chinese dishes, deliciously prepared and served by very knowledgeable waiters. Try the General Tso's chicken - not too spicy - just right. No wonder so many local Chinese New Yorkers come in to eat.

My wife and I have been coming here for years, we first found it while staying close by in the Midtown area and now, no matter what part of town we stay in we always return. We LOVE the dumplings! Either steamed or pan fried, and the Chow Fun and Mui Shoo Chicken are also on our go-to list. But everything here is very well prepared and tasty, they have a great wine list and the all the people there especially Michael & Christine are so friendly, fun & professional. Go!

We stayed at hotel on 55th and we stuck for the evening during a violent lightening storm. After reading various reviews on Seemless, I was hesitant to try this place. I decided to check out their website (not the ones on third party delivery sites) and was impressed that they allowed online ordering without a credit card. We ordered and the confirmation email gave us a 20-30 min window for pick up - it was ready in ten. The food was packaged well and they included plates and silverware without even being asked. Everything was delicious and I recommend the restaurant to anyone in town.

Very pleasant dining experience for lunch and dinner. No MSG used by request. Great shrimp won ton soup only by the cup,Polite waiter, unusual experience for me. food was excellent and tasty. would highly recommend.

Excellent authentic Chinese food in a very attractive decor. Good service and good portions. Also does a take-out business. Should be busier, as the food is worth a visit.

Lovely upscale midtown Chinese. If you are going for linen table clothes and "restaurant" feel (vs take out) this is a nice choice. Food came fast, clean, tasty. Choices for vegetarians. Portion size ok. The staff does not have great English - so be prepared to point, repeat, and double check.

Arrived with out reservations, not a problem. Staff were all amazingly courteous. Atmosphere was great (very busy ) with large families and couples. Food was exceptional. Was our best meal of the two days in NYC!

Just wanted some hot soup to bring back to my hotel. Hot and Sour was $3.25 for a good portion, and was decent but that's about it. They did bring it out immediately.

Our number one Chinese restaurant in NYC or anywhere. I have never had orange beef or hot shredded done better. The spring rolls and dumplings are so good too. The dining room is a lovely place to dine. If you can get Micheal as your waiter your experience will be complete. He is charming and qick to point out dishes were have never tried. We will be back!!!!!!

this is a proper Chinese restaurant, majority of staff are men and suited and booted accordingly, really trying with the Chinese authenticity, from entry to exit, everything is Chinese, there is a slight language barrier. we went for the lunch time menu, food was reasonably priced, portion sizes very big, couldn't finish the mains due to the starter sizes, food expertly cooked, hot and tasty, slightly rushed though, seated straight away, served quickly, and as soon as we advised we were finished, bill came quickly and we left!

Tang Pavilion has good and fast service. The food was adequate-your typical average quality Chinese food that pervades Manhattan. I think the main reason why I am leaving a less than stellar review is that they could, without great effort, improve the quality of their dishes to make them stand out rather than merely sit around.

Enjoyed the filet mignon and asparagus. Good to have some rice for a change. Certainly popular with the locals.

All the food was pretty good. Just standard chinese fare. Can't really think of any dish that really stood out in my mind but it was a decent meal overall.

We have been coming here for many years and the food and service are always good. The test for us is can you go back several times and still have the same positive experience. Over the years we may have been here 20 times and always a excellent meal. Also for midtown NYC the price is very fair.

I was dining with my friend last night after a wonderful dance performance by Alvin Ailey. The Japanese tourists were sitting next to us and the daughter asked me about the bill they just got. In it, the tip amount was written and they were surprised. So I called the waiter who was serving both tables. I said to him the tip should be up to the customer, depending on how happy they were of his service. The. He said that they were tourists and did not know how much they should pay. The Japanese tourists were well dresse and clearly well traveled. Of course they knew they had to leave tip in US. I always liked the restaurant for good food, but after the aggressive and arrogant attitude of the waiter, I am not going back there. For those traveling to New York City, be aware!

My family wanted Chinese at our hotel, and Tang Pavillion delivered! Appetizers such as vegetable dumplings, spicy noodles, all arrived fresh, fragrant and and piping hot. Chow fan (variety fried rice), salted dry green beans along with chicken with broccoli completed our hotel room feast. The large shrimp with salt and pepper reminded us of Sydney, Australia.

We enjoyed dinner of Shrimp & peapods with a very tasty sauce. They have a large menu selection, the service is very good and the atmosphere with white tablecloths is very pleasant. I would like to return to try other dishes.

Arrived for for a late lunch/early dinner at 16:15, to an empty restaurant. Prompt and attentive service from the maitre de was an indicator that things were going to move very fast, too fast! So fast it was not an enjoyable experience, yet they were not waiting for the table as the place was empty. Curious! When I go to a restaurant I want a dining experience not feel like I’m in a race to eat as fast as I can. Previous reviews on TripAdvisor are much too generous in their comments and reviews, this restaurant is basic Chinese food at crazy NY prices! The interior is tired and in need of reform, similar to the menu. Watch the check when it arrives, against the normal practice he had already added 20% which we refused. His reason was that many customers are tourists! At $170 for 3 people with no wine, we thought this was over priced. About 33% over priced. We rated it 5/10 overall. Poor!

This has been a longtime favorite - right near City Center and the MOMA. The elegant ambience provides a proper setting for the superb food served here. I particularly love their shrimp dishes. For what it's worth, there are always many Asian people dining here.

I went with several people and found the food to be fair. We each ordered a different dish and shared. I was not impressed with the food. Manhattan has great Chinese restaurants, however this was not one of them.

I ate the Tung Pavillion this month. I was lured by the website discussion that the restaurant was founded by a chef of Chang Kai Shek. When I lived in Taiwan, this description led to great cuisine. I had duck with scallion which was tender and tasty. Outstanding.

Simple standards, simple cooking, one of the best Chinese restaurants in Midtown. We have been to some of the best restaurants in Beijing and Guangzhou and also in London and other US cities but STILL, this remains one of our favorites. No frills, no fine dining - just plain, authentic, super tasty food of the freshest ingredients and all very reasonably priced. Very highly recommended.

This is my "go to" Midtown Chinese restaurant when visiting the city. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxed. The only glitch this time was an error in my take-out order (I usually dine-in) when I ordered crispy sesame beef but received sesame chicken instead. Still good. The crispy beef is excellent, though. I also enjoy the soup dumplings. If feeling adventurous, I understand that they have a special Szechuan menu that you can request for some very traditional dishes.

Whether for a quick dinner before going to a show or a more elaborate dinner, I have found Tang Pavilion more than satisfactory. They offer an extensive menu and the food is quite tasty and well presented. You will even get a small plate of melons and orange slices at the end of your meal at no charge. The service is rapid a feature that has led some of my friends to believe that they want you in and out in a jiffy. I have not not experienced this myself. I recommend this restaurant if you are a Chinese food aficionado.

Loved the Chinese food here! The egg rolls were delicious. Excellent wonton soup. The chicken with vegetables was very tasty. Nice atmosphere and good service. Definitely recommend this gem!

This is a local restaurant with great food and excellent service. The dumplings are great. Ideal place for children as they let you also try some items before deciding. Reasonably priced restaurant with very good staff.

Very good food. A small spot for Chinese food in the area. Fast service ! We had no reservation when we got there but after 7pm it became very crowded. Delicious, simple and tasty. Had the veggies with tofu (super)and the Chinese broccoli (ok) . A bit weird to see that we cannot pay different amounts on the bill and we had to split it 50/50.

One of the best restaurants in NYC for Dim Sum outside of Chinatown. We always enjoyed our food here and make it a point to come every time we are in New York. This time we were there for a very late lunch and the main dinning room was closed but we were seated near the entrance and that was fine. We had good service and the food was as good as always. Service is dry but efficient. The atmosphere is nice and pleasant.

If you like a fine Chinese cuisine with light and melt in your mouth dumplings, then this is the place! Love the shrimp but the veggie dumplings are wonderful too. Coming from New Jersey, we've been frequenting this lovely restaurant for over 10 years, including every Christmas day or eve and its consistantly good. The food, ambiance and staff are top notch. ENJOY :-)

This West Midtown Chinese restaurant is ideal for a business lunch because the food is pretty good, plus they have you seated and served in a hurry. However, as is the case with another similar Chinese restaurant in the East Midtown area, it is not the ideal dining spot if you are here for a family or couples meal because you are paying above average prices for Chinese food, in what is supposed to be a more upscale dining room experience and you would not appreciate being rushed through your meal. -Their menu is not very extensive, but every dish I have tried has been very good, i.e., the Scallion pancakes appetizer, the steamed vegetable dumplings appetizer, the Shrimp Toast appetizer (all exceptionally good - the shrimp toast is crispy, but not oily), Grand Marnier Shrimp, Chicken with Broccoli in garlic sauce (I request they add the garlic sauce as it is very good this way) and the Scallion Duck from their House Special menu. All of these dishes I have listed are not too spicy, yet very flavorful. -As for their service, it is fast and efficient, but not too friendly. If you are here for a quick business meal and good Chinese food, then this place is right for you. Otherwise, try another Chinese restaurant outside of the Midtown business area like Chinatown, where you can get good, authentic Chinese food, large portions and friendlier, more relaxed service.

A lot of diffferent dishes not too oversized but you can still share. Not very spicy even if the red sign is added. Very quick service. As in authentic chinese restaurant you can have table for 12 people but better to reserve because the restaurrant is not so big. Food can be taken out.

very nice surprise on a busy night in Manhattan. We could not get a seat anywhere, walked into Tang and it seemed full of Chinese, which felt good. They cleaned up a table and seated us in five minutes. Great service and food. The mix of customers changed over the next hour with 50/50 non Chinese vs Chinese, but it seemed v popular with the abundant Asian tourists. Highly recommend.

This little secret tucked away on 55th street is an awesome find! The food was incredible and the service outstanding. We loved it so much we at there twice during our short visit. The chicken dumplings had a sauce i can’t even describe. It was sooo delicious. Reasonably priced casual. Highly recommend

Charge higher price for average food. Chinatown choices probaby give better food at less cost. Ate here because it was convenient location such as Broadway show. They do not provide wi-fi.

We wanted Chinese food near our hotel when we landed and unfortunately this restaurant did not meet our hungry expectations. Food was lacklustre, flavourless and uninspiring. The sweet and sour pork was the worse I've ever tasted. The restaurant is dated and slightly shabby. The only positive note would be the flawless service.

I had a course dinner with 7 persons including business partners. Approx. 10 dishes came to our table. All of them were tasty and the best cuisine for me was (Peking?) duck enclosed by baobing. The restaurant was clean and the servers were polite. This Chinese restaurant is recommendable, especially, for groups.

The food is excellent and the service was great. Drinks were strong. Relaxing atmosphere. Would definitely eat here again.

Went to dinner with 8 colleagues from work. Some of us were very familiar with Chinese dishes, others not so much. We only ordered three appetizers, and everyone got entrees. Thankfully we did share a little bit. The dishes all tasted fantastic, and were surprisingly large portions. Service was very attentive. We walked in without a reservation on a Monday night and were seated immediately. They did ask we not stay more than 2 hours; we ended up leaving with 5 minutes to spare. A long but very enjoyable meal.

We have to NYC many times , and have tried many Asian restaurants both in Chinatown in Flushing , Mahattan . Recently , we stayed in Hotels in midtown near Central Park and have find a few decent Chinese place , Phillipe Chow ( expensive , good service and superb quality , family friendly ) , even Ollie take out on Broadway , so we don't need to go that far with our family . We were excited to walk pass Tang and decided to try. . The place is clean , table cloth , mid size . The wait staff dress in black suit , but the service was poor compare to the dress ( may as well dress down ) .The first time just two of us was ok , a vegetable dish and sweet and sour fish . We decided to return with 10 of us , 6 adults and 4 kids (2-7). They gave us a hard time about the kids ( are they noisy , no high chair , put you near the entrance ) when we made the reservation . We almost cancelled( should have ) but decided to go ahead. . We ordered many items . Soup and fried Dumplings ok . Peking duck the worst we had. , all cut up from a dry roasted duck when presented to us , instead of cutting the duck in front . The red color of the skin is artificial and tasteless . Beef with asparagus decent . Steamed fish overdone . The two vegetable dishes ok . Our kids behave good , the 2 year old did cried one time , the wait staff definitely showed their displeasure. In fact , my son in law took the little one back to the hotel early . Lesson to learn , if you have young kids , do not try this place. , the food is at best just Ok .

Good, but not great, classic Chinese food in mid-town. Good service. Good for a business lunch. I would not go there on a date. Has a lot of history.

Service - Excellent to where it seemed they knew what we needed before we could ask. Food - Amazing! I am from the south and Chinese food down here is never this good. Cost - It cost the same as a chain restaurant (Under $25 for two entrees) but came with excellent service and better food. Highly recommended. We will be back!

The food at Tangs was the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. We were six ladies and shared three appetizers that were amazing. Fried scallion pancakes, steamed vegetable dumpling and cold noodles with peanut sauce. We then had three main dishes that we shared.Duck with black bean sauce, a wonderful shrimp and broccoli dish and orange steak. The service was crisp which added to the enjoyment of eating. At the end of the meal each of us was served some fruit and of course a fortune cookie. The best fortune was eating lunch at Tangs Pavilion.

Visiting NYC on holiday with my partner and was hesitant about trying a Chinese which wasn't in china town.. Anyway.. Gave this place a try and it's the best Chinese food we've ever tasted!!!

The place is a little tired, the maitre d' a little snooty, but the service was swift and efficient, if a little remote. We only ate one dish each so it's hard to make an overall judgment about quality, but the dishes we had were very good. At lunchtime the place was very crowded and the goal was to get you in and out. It's best to have a reservation.

Worst Chinese food ever received Ordered and received worst food ever. Asked for egg rolls they only had spring rolls asked how many in order was told 1 so ordered 2 received 2 order $18 each soggy gross rolls. Ordered special fried rice got soggy white rice with 2 shrimp and some ham pieces absolutely disgusting.

I've frequented this place for years. It has its idiosyncrasies but has consistently served outstanding Chinese fare at the most reasonable prices in NYC. The service can be spotty at times and the place constantly feels like it will shut down soon. But it chugs along and is a trusty place that we visit at least twice every trip to NY. The lobster with ginger and scallion is simply the best version of this popular dish, The lobster is so fresh it seems like from a live tank. The sauce is finger licking good and the lobster is cracked perfectly to minimise the effort to get at the meat. This is a staple. Chicken shredded with hot pepper, or with black bean are great. Mixed vegetable stir fried in brown sauce is excellent. Steamed fish is fresh and steamed well and never overcooked. We have rarely had a bad dish. This is also not a grotty NY takeaway Chinese shack. While the place could do with a facelift, the white tablecloth and cloth serviettes remind of places that would cost 4 times as much with less tasty food and snooty service.

I seem to find that no matter where you go in the world the staff in Chinese restaurants are generally quite brusque and not very polite and this place is no exception. The menu is not very explanatory so we had to ask a few questions and the waiter gave the impression that every word he spoke cost him money so he used as few as possible and did nothing to allay our confusion. The food was very tasty however. The decor is very plain and rather old. From what I could tell online this place seems to be something of an NY institution, not sure why though!

Great location, reasonable prices and attractive ambience don't offset awful food. This was a favorite restaurant, but a recent visit was a great disappointment. Food was clearly pre-cooked and rewarmed- orange-shrimp were caked with a paste that was awful; tofu dish black mushrooms were plentiful, but the tofu might have been cooked the day before. The manager's response to our complaint was very cold.

Had the pleasure of grabbing take out food from this restaurant this weekend. Food was fabulous. It's slightly pricey but you do get what you pay for as the food is very fresh and very flavorful! Will definitely be returning.

My wife and I had a late dinner at Tang PAVILION after a flight from Paris. We entered there by chance. We were quickly surprised by the high quality of the food and the authenticity of their cuisine. Delicious entrees in particular, in reasonable quantities, contrary to many chinese restaurants in NY, that prioritize quantities to quality. Service a bit grumpy, however, as they closed at 10pm, which is a bit early when you are jetlagged. Overhall excellent expérience nevertheless.

On my quite frequent trips to New York this is the restaurant I just love to visit. Even though I always intend to try something new from the menu I tend to order my favourite dishes with only some variations : The Scallion pancake, the Sesame chicken, the Pinapple duck and the Grand Marnier Shrimp are all my very favourites and what is quite uniqe is the option of white or brown rice which I really appreciate as I prefer brown rice.

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend lunch of Shanghai dumplings, wheat gluten, and scallion pancakes as appetizers. It was followed by Chinese cabbage and mushrooms and salt and pepper chicken. All dishes were well-presented by experienced, well-dressed wait staff who were extremely attentive. The Peking duck at the next table also looked appealing as the server prepared the wrappers for the entire large group. Another table was having a Chinese feast of dish after dish. Prices were very reasonable!

We had a light lunch at this midtown Chinese restaurant. While the service was friendly, our table's position behind a pillar left us briefly forgotten by the wait staff. Clients are served some sugar coated peanuts while the orders are taken. The menu includes dim sum (not tried), lunch specials (but only served Monday to Friday which made us wonder why they gave us this menu), and a range of typical Chinese options. Sadly the wonton soup was relatively flavorless and the spicy Hunan beef had minimal chili spice to it other than a few fermented beans. While the food was decent, it was not very exciting overall.

Having travelled in China we felt the ambience at Tang Pavilion was authentic, and as there were also mainly Chinese families and groups eating there this was emphasised. The service was efficient and the dishes we chose were tasty and well presented. The best Sweet and Sour chicken we’ve eaten in a long time!

Ordered a large out. The hot and sour soup was excellent. Everything else was extremely poor to the extent that I threw almost all of it away. The General Tso's Chicken was deed friend chicken in a thick batter and the sauce was more of a sweet and sour sticky sauce that was not even vaguely spicy. The spicy prawns were also not spicy and simply did not taste right. I am not sure whether they were past their best or not but I ate 2 and then stopped as it just seemed wrong. I love sampling as much Chinese food as possible when I am in New York and so it was a large disappointment to be served such under par food.

We order from Tang on a regular basis, consistently great food. We went the other day and a very nice restaurant.

Tang Pavilion is in 55th Street at the 6th Avenue end. I have visited here a few times and the staff are always pleasant and helpful. The dishes are reasonably priced. A soup is $2.75 while a main dish including rice is typically about $11 to $13. Well worth a visit.

This has been a "splurge" Chinese restaurant for decades, and it remains several cuts above most in terms of service and atmosphere (calm and pretty quiet). A friend and I arrived without a reservation on a busy Saturday night at about 6:15, just before crowds flooded in; the maitre'd took our name and was courteous. We found the food to be just OK. Her noodle dish was tastier than my more expensive shrimp and asparagus Shanghai style (white sauce). The shrimp had a bleachy, "off" taste so I didn't eat them all (for the record, they didn't make me ill later). Hot and sour soup just OK. Ice cream is standard-issue Chinese restaurant but it's not expensive either, a plus. Meal starts with free pickles and peanuts, and there are orange slices with the fortune cookies--nice, old-fashioned touches. Proximity to City Center is a drawing card, especially given the lack of other mid-priced restaurants in the immediate area. We came here, frankly, because we couldn't get into Pazza Notte or La Bonne Soupe and didn't want to settle for Astro Coffee Shop. Many of the people who came right after us seemed to have the same story. Since when has old Sixth Ave gotten so busy? That said, I would return to Tang but not order shrimp again.

Found this restaurant while looking for a Chinese dinner near our hotel. My selection confirmed by hotel bellman as the place to go. Food was very good and price was reasonable. I would go back.

I used to go here at least twice a week back when the Corporate card was handy. With the budget cutbacks, I stopped going. I went today (on my own dime). The food is the same as it was from years back. Moo shu Pork was still awesome, sweet and sour pork is still great. As a matter of fact, i tried ordering the same food at other cheaper places and they don't make it the same as Tang's. The head waiter and servers are still there, well most of them... Meaning service hasn't changed. And that is why my T.A. Friends this restaurants have over 41,000 reviews and averages 4 1/2 stars. That is pretty high.

We really enjoyed the food here....in fact, we would have kept eating if we had not already finished everything! The dumplings were really good, and the seafood rice bowl was delicious. It is NYC and a sit-down restaurant so expect prices to be a bit higher than your neighborhood take out.

We found Tang on a bit of a wander and it looked okay so we went in - it's a bit deceiving from the outside as the restaurant is actually huge as it goes round the corner. I found the service a bit strained, but the food was amazing, some of the best Chinese food I have had! Definitely worth a visit!!

Stuck in a row of small restaurants is this gem. When I looked at the website, I was expecting a hole in the wall but this place was top drawer. Excellent service, full bar and decent wine list. Food was fresh, tasty and served with style. We had shrimp and vegetable dumplings, beef with broccoli , two types of shrimp, lo mein and spicy chicken - all excellent.

We came for lunch, and our bill was less than $20 each. The shrimp and vegetables had huge shrimp and the sauce had gentle and mildly spicy flavor. The General Tsoi’s checked had some spice and we ate all of it! We also had the fried rice. Excellent if you are in the mood for Chinese food.

Conveniently located on 55th Street just east of 6th Avenue, Tang is the place for authentic Chinese dishes, deliciously prepared and served by very knowledgeable waiters. Try the Orange Beef- not too spicy - just right. No wonder so many local Chinese New Yorkers come in to eat. Loved it!

We didn't really know this place and decided to go for it in the last min as an adventure. It turned out to be the best chinese restaurant so far we found in new york. All food we ordered is authentically cooked and tasted delicious. The atmosphere is nice and cozy. Lighting is perfect (not overly bright), which is not easy to find in a chinese restaurant. All staff is friendly and patient. Definitely a regular place for us going forward.

this is a fabulous find on our trip to New York. the food is delicious and hot and the decor is very pleasant.it looks like a small place from the street but has this large dining are in the back and is usually packed which says a lot about the quality of the food. a must try if you like chinese food

I've had Chinese food very often in the UK. I've even enjoyed it in Beijing. This was a little different but just as good. All your favourites are there. The dim sum are superb. The prawns on seasme seed buns were probably the best I have ever had. I prefer the English take on beef with chilli sauce but, perhaps, that is because I am so used to that way of serving it. The service was good. The wine list perhaps could have been a little more imaginative. Eat at the Tang Pavilion. You'll enjoy it.

The service is attentive and fast, offering an extensive menu sure to please one's palate! From appetizers to entrees, the food is deliscious to say the least. I never experienced a bad meal and Tang's continues to be my restaurant of choice whenever I have a hankering for Chinese cuisine!

For years after the closing of the mythological szechuan rast was closed we looked for a replacement each visit to Manhatten. My wife does not care much for chinese (western style food). Once we tried Tand -problem solved. Once you it down very delicios -one of a kind-pickles and nuts arrive at the table. You probably have dinner based on these two free appetizer. The fried dumplings are as good as can be expected and the fish meals -two versions- were very good. Classic picks such as chiken or beef eggplant are generally very good. Service always effective so sometime a smile is missing. Specail prize for the tea. And my wife? she cherish the fact that at the end of the meal you o not stand up feeling a stone in your stomak .

As soon as you walk in, you know you are someplace special. There is an understated elegance. You are greeted and shown to your reserved spot. The menu is ample and descriptive. The food is marvelous.

High quality, modest prices. These guys have been slinging the good stuff for many, many years. Located on W 55th in the high rent district, somehow they serve high quality food for the aforementioned modest prices. I love their chow fun, their ribs, the fried rice and dry sauteed string beans - but really everything is good. Make sure to ask for a plate of complimentary peanuts when you sit down, and tell them Travelling Man sent you... T'Man '20

Just returned from a very disappointing lunch. Had high hopes from other reviews. Obviously from people not familiar with very good authentic Chinese food. As a native of Vancouver my standards are pretty high. Was optimistic when we arrived as lots of Chinese in the restaurant. Ordered the Shanghai soup dumplings. To not provide a soup bowl to eat these was an ominous beginning. 6 for $7.95, the dough was too thick, too much filling that was neither tender or tasty, and broth not flavourful. $8.95 for small off the bone Cold drunken chicken which was not smooth, over cooked, more salt then wine flavour. This dish should be served on the bone. $10.95 for dry cooked green beans, not spicy but very salty. $20.95 for Salt and Pepper prawns, 8 very sad, over battered prawns that were obviously cooked in old oil, did not have the salt and pepper flavour but the onion, jalapeño garnish. $11.95 for the Beef Chow Fun. Not enough Wok Hai flavour, lots of beef but not a lot of noodles which were strangely very, very wide and kind of gummy. Mediocre at best. All in all, will not be returning. Do not have an issue with price as this is mid-town Manhatten. Best Chinese food is out in Flushing, not anywhere in Manhatten (Chinatown included).

I got married in this place 27 years ago, when they were on East 45th Street. I used to go there at least 5 times a week, with groups of clients or without. So I know the previous owners very well. After 5 years of absence, I went back to visit them and found out the owners retired and management has changed. To be honest, food is just so so and so is the service. However, the price is just ridiculous. Guess I won't go back anytime soon.

I am from New Orleans so impressing me with food is tough. This place did it. Very economically priced and great service.

First impressions were that the restaurant was very formal - we were very quickly approached for our choice of food - it looked like our meal would be over in no time. This Chinese restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge ! I ordered one of the most expensive meals on the menu - Crispy Duck. What arrived was one of the most visually disappointing meals I can ever remember being served in my life. I got a plate of deep fired duck legs still intact - there were no trimmings or sauces or accompanying vegetables- the taste of the duck was totally bland. I called the head waiter and expressed my great disappointment and asked for some sauces to try to give the duck some taste but both sauces he eventually brought did nothing to help. I did not eat the bulk of the duck and got the bill and left as quickly as possible. I certainly will never be back in this Chinese restaurant.

I have visited and order from Tang for many years since it is in the neighborhood. It is our go to for Chinese Szechuan food. The nice thing about Tang is that they have a great dining room with round tables so everyone can share the food family style from the center. There are many Chinese restaurants in midtown but often the dining rooms are small, drab, and loud places.

Arrived 50 mins before advertised closing time, greeted by a miserable host, so double checked we could still eat, he said yes. Awful service from the 'Head Waiter' in the suit; throwing cutlery down, grunting his way through taking our order. 2/3 starters arrived, and when we questioned where the other was a while later, was abruptly told it takes longer. It then arrived with the mains, which were slammed down, and squeezed onto our table as we had not yet finished starters. "I have to bring these, the kitchen is closing." Chicken and Spinach soup was completely tasteless - no seasoning, so avoid unless you enjoy chicken and spinach in hot water. We were pleased to see the poor service had nothing to do with us being English, as the 2 native New Yorkers next to us got an eye roll on asking for some extra sauce! They were obviously ready to go home, so were rushing all remaining tables out, hovering round like vultures. I must say however, the younger waiters in the white shirts all had more manners and customer service than the older gentleman. We paid our bill, and despite being unhappy at the level of service, and disappointed with the food, we left a small tip. As several other reviews have experienced, we were shouted back by the 'Head Waiter' to count out the money and stand shrugging his shoulders. When i asked if there was a problem, i was told "tip is 10%, this not 10%", to which we explained he was lucky to get any tip at all. As we left, he shouted something in Chinese. An absolute disgrace.

Had a simple lunch. The food was good. Not expensive (12$ for a regular main course. They have more expensive ones). Atmosphere pleasant.

I work in the area and order in most times for lunch. Always a solid Chinese meal. Very quick delivery. We do eat in the restaurant sometimes and the food is even better, but as another reviewer noted, the staff always seems put off. Maybe it's a culture thing but a smile wouldn't hurt.

Gave it four "circles" because there is no option for 3-1/2, i.e., just "GOOD. Have been eating at Tang for years, because it is very convenient to City Center. As usual on a Saturday evening the restaurant was very full, and the food was, for the most part, quite good. But a few glitches: Some of our party ordered steamed dumplings as an appetizer. They arrived on a plain white plate, and AFTER I was served my soup, which was awkward. If I waited for them to get the dumplings, my soup would have been cold, so I ate it while they waited, and waited. Finally they arrived, 6 doughy-looking dumplings arranged on a plain white plate. They each ate one, but would not eat the rest of the order, saying the dumplings were "very heavy" and not good. Meanwhile, the large table of Asian-Americans sitting next to us were also served dumplings, but theirs arrived (properly) in a wicker steamer, and looked totally different from ours - even from 6 feet away, we could see that the dough was lighter. They also got porcelain spoons as opposed to our metal serving pieces. I had read comments that there is a double standard for service at this restaurant but never quite believed it until now. The service, which has been noted here, is "fast" - which could be amended to "rushed" and is more like brusque than brisk. We were not asked if we wanted dessert; instead complimentary plates of thin-sliced honeydew melon and a slice of orange were quickly brought to our table as soon as the main courses were cleared and the check was summarily placed on the table while we were still eating. (What's your hurry; here's your hat.) Another thing: if you check our their menu on a well-known NYC restaurant site, you will find the prices at least $6-$8 lower than what you will see on the restaurant's menu. So beware: they are either very outdated, or deliberately misleading. But, for the most part, the main courses are extremely well-prepared and nicely served. I would go back, but I would stay away from dumplings, and maybe I'd tell the waiter not to rush us. It might work...

We had delicious meals of chicken, beef, and shrimp which were all very flavorful. Only problem of pressure from a waiter to hurry up and order since the kitchen is closing in 10 min. We felt rushed

I picked this restaurant while on a business trip to New York. I saw on sign outside that they specialize in "Shanghainese" food. Having lived in Shanghai, I developed a special fondness for Xiao Long Bao dumplings. These are soup dumplings. Yes, Soup! They are able to have a normal pork dumpling, accompanied by a delicious soup, inside of a purse dumpling. This is extremely hard to find in the US. I ordered them at the Tang Pavillion and they were delicious. Very close and true to the real Shanghai equivalent. I also had the beef with broccoli and it was very good. In summary, the soup dumpling was authentic. Prices for lunch were reasonable and the food quality was great.

Stopped here before a business meeting at 1350 Avenue of the Americas. Very elegant for a Chinese restaurant, great classical music playing. Service was great and food came out very fast. I had the spicy white meat chicken and it was outstanding! One of the best chicken dishes I have ever had at a Chinese restaurant. I will definitely come back here on my next trip to NYC.

A true expression of immersion in Chinese cuisine off the beaten track. Special mention for the “jumbo shrimp with caramelized nuts”. Good value for money

If this was quite frankly a very poor showing by Tang staff. The service was amazingly bad. While pouring water, the waiter spilled it literally three times. He also dribbled the wine across the table as he was pouring it. No apologies or anything. It was almost as if they weren't even trying to provide good service. The food was mediocre at best. The duck was incredibly dry. It's been much better in past visits. I didn't even finish my dinner and one person in my party had severe stomach upset afterwards. This is not the Tang Pavilion of before. Don't know what happened but don't waste your time here. There are plenty of other options in Midtown. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because the location was very convenient for us to go to a concert afterwards.

We visited New York for 4 days and actually went twice to this restaurant. The food was well prepared and freshly cooked ,and we thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. Michael our waiter was very friendly and welcoming and provided us with a very professional service! Thank you Michael- from your friends from Ireland !

Visited here in March 2014, extremely glad I did! One to remember on my next trip to New York. Nicely decorated good sized restaurant so didn't feel like you were too close to the next table. Beautiful food, lovely and fresh and served piping hot just what you want when dining out. So much good choice on the menu did make deciding difficult however jumbo shrimp with cashew nuts is a must! -AMAZING! Will certainly visit her again and will recommend to anyone traveling to New York looking for a meal in midtown!

I ate at Tang Pavilion numerous times, it offers great food. I personally likes the Buddha Delight and all their sea food dishes. My wife prefers their chicken with cashews. The service is superb and the prices are moderate. If you are close to six ave and mid fifties don't miss this tasty dishes.

I've had Christmas dinner here many times and absolutely love this place. They have all the classic American-style Chinese dishes such as General Tso's chicken, Sesame chicken and Twice-cooked pork, plus many more. You can also find more authentic dishes on the menu and by request. it's also located close to Broadway and is a great place to have dinner before a show.

Excellent steamed soup dumpings (w/ and w/o crab), hand-wrapped pork/vegetable potstickers, and amazing stir-fried rice cake dishes where the rice cakes are chewy and do not stick together. Also excellent fresh Chinese vegetables. The appetizer selection includes items not found on standard Chinese menus. Take-out service in mid-town is quite quick and reliable.

Very expensive compared to what we are used to in South Carolina and I prefer the taste of Chinese at home even though this may be more authentic. Kind of expensive as well.

Excellent food, service and decor Disappointed with Chilean bass with scallions and ginger. $40 for a tiny slice and not very good

WE HAVE EATEN HERE SEVERAL TIMES ON EACH TRIP TO NY. Soup is small as are the other portions. Clean restrooms, and white cloth napkins..all in all would return for lunch

I had a lunch with my friends, who are working nearby. The food is as authentic as you could get in China. All the dishes we ordered taste great. As being overseas for many years, it's one of the few restaurants I've been to where I can recall some flavors of my hometown. The location is near the central park, so no excuse to avoid!

Was here on a Wednesday night for dinner. Seated right away. Was fairly busy. Nice restaurant. Typical NYC where the tables are kind of close. Ordered orange chicken, wonton soup and curry chicken. Everything was just average. Really nothing better than typical "fast food" style Chinese restaurant. Sure the presentation was nicer but the food was no better tasting. Now let me be clear it wasn't bad it was just average. But in here the food is close to $20 an entree so you'd expect maybe something a bit better. At the end it was a little difficult to get a waiter to give us our bill and then when we were ready to pay it was tough to get one to come pick up the check. All-in-all just an average meal out in Midtown.

The service is brusque and efficient, the décor is plain, but Tang Pavilion scores high on food. The extensive menu features all the Chinese classics, plus a number of Shanghai specialties. We particularly enjoyed the whole steamed fish and the gluten puffs. The night we were there the customers were mostly Chinese, confirming the adage that to find good Chinese food, you go to restaurants where Chinese people eat.

This is the place thats been around forever and gets overshadowed by the new trendy places, but the food and service is excellent. We went pre theater. Waiters were attentive and brought oriental pickles and peanuts with our drinks. First course was very good hot and sour soup. Entrees of shrimp and another with spicy chicken were excellent. Spice was just right and didn't over power the shrimp or chicken. nice fruit platter, complimentary for desert and we were done in time for our show. The place was full and looked to me like people from the neighborhood were there. Comfortable seating, never felt rushed even though we were watching our time. Price was very reasonable.

We dined in a group of 4, the starters were very good, however the overall quality of the food was not really exceptional. The hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour. I can only put it down to either the chef having an off day or they have a home recipe which is quite different to any other. Crispy duck pancakes are rather thick - more like a wrap from Pret a Manger. Overall we were disappointed with the quality. Without conferring each member remarked that this was not a great dining experience. There is better to be had in NY for the same price. Let's hope it was just an off day in the kitchen.

It is so nice to go to a Chinese restaurant where the food is delicious, the service old fashioned and polite and (gasp) there are fresh white starched tablecloths. Don't be fooled by the tiny room up front...the back room is large and pleasantly decorated.

This restaurant was right around the corner from The Warwick Hotel and the filet with asparagus was delicious. Flavorful sauce is served with the sliced filet and at the end of the meal they serve a nice little fruit plate. Service was very fast.

Excellent varied menu with something for everyone, including healthy dishes. Very friendly and helpful waiters.

My kids and I have been coming to Tang Pavilion for years. We stumbled upon it one year at Christmas time when we stayed at the Hilton. I had pork belly buns for the first time here and they are delicious. My daughter absolutely loves their chicken fried rice and in fact everything we have ever ordered has been very good. Again, another throwback style restaurant. Not pretentious, just good, classic Chinese served on white tablecloths. Lovely.

Ate lunch in this unassuming restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. The sauces were incredible, the food fresh and hot and the service excellent (despite the above reviews!). And the lunch menu is embarrassingly inexpensive. Great place.

Don't come here for an egg roll and spare ribs. Home made noodles, King po chicken, twice cooked pork, shrimp with walnuts yes chow mein no. Unattentive staff forces you have to ask for a wine list. Tea also. Good menu but you leave feeling let down

Found this restaurant on a rainy monday because was close to hotel. Decor is typical for old established neighborhood chinese restaurant...nice, not fancy, with white tablecloths etc. Not very crowded, but i was there early , 6pm. The greeting was warm and friendly and high level of attentiveness in the service throughout the meal. Waiters were professional and had a sense of humor. Had won ton soup, crispy whole fish(a signature dish) and shrimp fried rice...all was excellent and served in the right cadence. Wine list is adequate and prices are fair for new york. Definitely a place to return to....all good.

Pretty decent soup of spinach and chicken. Pretty decent steamed shrimp and broccoli . Lousy and rude attitude of some waiters at the end of our lunch who had the audacity to embarrass me stating that my cards were declined, when apparently I called up the credit card companies and was told that they did not even have any evidence or attempt of the restaurant putting the charge . Both credit card companies reassured me that the problem was definitely with the restaurant's terminal and that my credit standing was more than satisfactory . What was truly appalling was the attitude of one of the waiters who came to me with a rude and obnoxious tonality, stating he was not going to try again and that I could keep my card! To make matters worse , our table , in contrast to our neighbor's was offered the traditional fortune cookies etc. It is a real shame that the rude and extremely unprofessional attitude of some of their waiters is going to make me think twice before ever stepping back in that restaurant . For my good fortune , there are three great restaurants on the same street where the waiters certainly know how to treat their patrons with respect and professionalism .

Fresh ingredients, attentive service, generous portion, no attitude, And a great bargain for midtown!

Every year we go with a big group of six to ten people to see Alvin Ailey at City Center. Tang Pavilion is perfect for a big group. And it is just a block from City Center and the Zigfield. Service is efficient, food is served quickly, which makes it very good before theater. Food there is actually better than average. The menu is huge, so there will always be something for everyone in the group. Spicy, which I like, is actually not terribly spicy, so I always supplement spicy food there with hot chili oil. Food tends to be on the sweet side, which is rather strange, but if you like Chinese food with a sweetish taste, even the spicy dishes, this is a great place. Actually, the group we go with always thinks it is excellent, so, basically, you can't go wrong here.

I had Hot & Sour Chicken Soup, Chicken Fried Rice and Salt & Pepper Pork, all costing around US$ 32. Soup was good, quantity on higher side. Fried rice was okay but Pork was excellent. I was alone and finished my dinner in flat 40 minutes. I must say it was fast service.

We visited in the evening. The waiter dressed in a black suit spoke very poor English and we could hardly understand him. All the dishes were tasteless and served in the most inelegant manner. The excuse for dumplings would not pass muster anywhere. The waiter insisted on a 18% tip. Find somewhere else.

On a one week holiday in New York we ate at this restaurant twice. Authentic Chinese food with good variety - the fish dish was excellent. Friendly staff. Convenient location.
Old School Chinese
As a child growing up in NC in the 70's, most Chinese restaurants were "nice." White tablecloths, waiters, etc. The Tang Pavilion reminded me of those restaurants. I found it here on Trip Advisor as we were looking for a place for lunch in midtown before our tour at Top of the Rock. We were not disappointed - delicious food, good service and reasonable prices. And I hate to sound cliche, but there were lots of Chinese folks in the restaurant, so I figured it must be pretty good. We would definitely go back.
