The packed seating and average food was not worth the wait. The best part of our dining experience was the wine - it's a BYO so we brought along a good bottle.

Wonderful, atmospheric Village cafe

By LNT66 |

I have eaten here many times, and never written a review! The Eggs Benedict are the best! But, having said that, everything I have ordered has been consistently good. The café is small, you might have to wait for a table, but the turn around is quick. Weekends are busy at brunchtime, but during the week you can get a table for breakfast quite easily. Keep in mind that the special brunch menu is available at the weekends only. The feel of the place is very New York, 'neighborhood' , and is a great place to have your first breakfast on your first day in the city... eat, check your guide book, have a coffee and then dive in!!

great little restaurant in west village!

By ninthmuse |

came to this bijou little bistro to eat after visiting the whitney museum and was fortunate enough to get a table straightaway although that might have had something to do with choosing to sit outside. the queue to sit inside was relatively short and moved quickly and worth the wait. my friend and i found the inside very warm and it was packed so outside we went. i ordered the croque monsieur with roast potatoes and my friend had a chicken breast salad. the brunch menu was a fixed price and compared to london prices i was impressed with the quantity and quality of food for $18. the guys who own and run the place were very friendly and accomodating and clearly they have a roaring trade for what was a lovely brunch. certainly worth coming here to soak up the ambience of the area and to have a yummy lunch.

Terrible Throwback to the 90's

By adam F |

The fact that this place is 'in' amazes me. It's kitch, rude, and the food is stodgy and terrible. Fixed prices for meals include bad filter coffee and concentrate orange juice. Staff are rude, and slow. The whole place is just really average. It deserves 2 stars but Ive given it 1 to compensate for the hype.

Average. Chicken puff pastry just so so. Very watery. Salad just ok. But a warm intimate space.

By Lori S |

The chicken puff pastry was watery. Just not that exciting. I swear the best food was the French fries which is kind of a problem.

A neighborhood gem

By zinfulone |

Delightfully cozy corner bistro with well-prepared dishes and informal atmosphere. BYOB policy makes it a real find! Chilled corn soup was sweet and creamy, potato gnocchi a generous serving of soft pillows with just enough cheese. The wild mushroom strudel earthy and rich. My salmon with spring veggies was perfectly seared and still medium rare inside. Ahh- then there's dessert - save room for the house-made delights, particularly a hazelnut & chocolate dacquoise - layers of crunchy meringue and chocolate cream! The place fills up quickly, and remember it is cash-only. If you are fussy about your wine glasses- bring your own!

Tartine, great casual dinner

By KevinGaltrey |

At the end of a lazy Sunday, Tartine on junction of West 4th Street/11th Street this is a good value supper. Small (tight) no reservations, cash only & bring your own! Not fine dinning but a decent 3 course tasty meal at under $60 ( excluding wine & service) is fantastic value, especially having just paid $60 for a couple of glasses of indifferent wine at Terrior on the highline. Tables are small and its an eclectic mix of diners, but if you are looking for a good casual supper, it's more than OK.

Very nice

By MammaGump |

A really nice intimate café type restaurant, good service and the food was lovely. Our first night in New York and we really enjoyed it.

Lucky I took a left instead of a right turn

By Curbless |

Pure luck! Saw this place very crowded picked up my wife from her appointment and said let’s try it for lunch. We were not disappointed. Food was tasty fresh and abundant. We must say they had one waiter/busboy/cashier/food runner but this guy did it all effortlessly. There are some things you should know It is a byob. Place is small, tables are a bit tight but that does not bother anyone. They do not rush you and the outside seating was full. I had the Pino lamb burger....awesome. My wife had chicken sandwich with a side salad. Both reasonably priced. We will be back!

Remembered why we had been there before

By aterhune |

The minute we arrived we knew that we'd been there several years before and why we had enjoyed it. Even though it was Fathers Day, we got a table outside and had a great brunch. If you can, sit outside on a nice day. There seem to be lots of brunch spots in the vicinity so it's a good place to look even if you can't get into Tartine. No reservations, so get there early.

Typical NYC

By Cécile |

We came here for breakfast based on TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed! We had eggs benedict and omelette; both were delicious! Service was friendly and fast and the place is really cute in an adorable neighbourhood! Would recommend to come early though as it is pretty small (we had to leave our baby pram outside for instance)

Best French in Manhattan

By Molly M |

A very quaint, small restaurant. The space is small but the atmosphere, food, and service make up for it. The food was amazing. Having been to France, this restaurant felt like it was situated right in Rue Cler. Definitely worth a visit if you are in West Village.

Best Eggs Florentine yet !!

By David M |

Taking a chance for a Saturday brunch, we arrived fairly early and lucked into an immediate seating at the only open table for four, were greeted warmly and promptly, orange juice immediately appeared, and soon were tasting the most delicious, BEST Eggs Florentine (PERFECTLY poached eggs and creamed spinach) with roasted potatoes yet! This bustling place efficiently cranks out the most delicious food in a quiet and relaxing neighborhood - small space, some outdoor seating, cash only - no cards, and well worth it !! We were well fueled for a walk of the High Line Park and the Brooklyn Bridge - kudos to you guys at Tartine!!

Excellent brunch

By Philip H |

Nice place that almost always is very crowded. I have been here twice and both times I had to stand in line for 15-20 minutes or so. It's worth wile waiting! Especially the brunch menu is excellent, the egg dishes, including egg Benedictine and various types of omelette's are really tasty, and leave some space for their lovely pastries!

Cute bistro in the heart of West Village

By Elizabeth B |

Tartine is a lovely little restaurant tucked away on a quiet tree lined street corner in the middle of West Village. The menu tends toward the heavier, old school French, with plenty of cheese and cream sauces, but there is lighter fare also. The appetizer menu is well thought out and inventive, featuring a spinach and artichoke tart with Gruyere cheese, beet salad, escargot and several other items. The chicken dinner with thinly pounded filets topped with an arugula and kale salad was light and satisfying. The fact that it's BYOB with no corkage fee is an added bonus. My new favorite neighborhood place!

Super Breakfast

By Joey911 |

Me and My brother had a really great breakfast. The omelet with everything was perfect. Avocado toast with also very good.

Cozy French Bistro

By love-2-travel6319 |

We had Sunday brunch here and thoroughly enjoyed our delicious food. They also accommodated our food requests (such as switching from eggs benedict to scrambled on a particular plate) and the food was served promptly. The restaurant truly feels like a Parisian bistro on a side street. The dessert case was so tempting that we returned later tat day for dessert. The only "drawback" is that only cash is accepted, so be prepared.

Great place for BYOB

By CarlB2go |

Very nice dinner out front. Brought our own bottle, and there was no corkage fee. Food was very nicely done.

Tiny restaurant, wonderful brunch

By Randi R |

We choose Tartine for Sunday brunch because it was in the West Village and opened early. The tables are very tight but we 4 were comfortable in a booth. The cappuccino and fresh-squeezed orange juice were delicious and included in the fixed-price brunch. I'd like to come back for lunch or dinner some time.

No reservation required

By selcukny |

On a quaint street in the village, the line outside tells it all. Bring your own beverage to this lovely joint and go ahead order all the classics. You'll be happy with simple bistro classics plus the duck legs-- let's not forget te desserts which are great and while you're at it, order some E lemonade and wash it all down. A must visit. Small, noisy, crowded, hit, cold, small, noisy and crowded. All great.

Great for Mussels Frites.

Great for Mussels Frites.

I really don't want to tell you about the best brunch in NYC

By MoxieBoston |

I have had the pleasure of having brunch there a number of times. All of their brunch items are great and their baked goods are to die for....also good coffee. Also had lunch there once - which was also pretty fabulous. Only drawback is the space is very small and tables are tight. But I'd have to say it is worth it.

Cozy Dishes Dished Out in a Cozy Setting

By Alex C |

We cabbed here from Farmer Joe`s with a bag selection of wines and were seated immediately. It`s tight, but the atmosphere was perfect, dark and loud, the place was alive. We had some Crouton with cheese and caramelized everything, escargot, and a Kale Salad to start, all was well and kicked the stomach to life. Wine, wine, wine, etc, main course. Chicken, never order chicken in a restaurant, anyone can cook chicken, why did I order chicken It was spicy chicken and it was good, their fries that accompanied was a nice treat too. The chicken was on the dry over cooked side, but nevertheless lots of flavour. Also had another chicken dish wrapped up in pastry all puffed crisped and buttered, which was excellent. Desert, with a line wrapping around the building we decided are seats were too good to leave. Creme brulee and a chocolate tart both classic and hit the spot.

Friendly, Low Key, Delicious Saturday Brunch

By Landmarkfinder A |

Until we stumbled on Tartine we feared the West Village had been conquered by precious touristy cafes with long lines and higher prices. We lucked out here. A cozy table for 2 was waiting for us in the corner. Within a couple minutes we had a perfectly drawn cappuccino and latte sitting in front of us. Brunch was superb: Eggs norwegienne, served over salmon and english muffin and a Tunisian special: eggs and spinach over fresh bread and a piquant sriracha sauce.

Left as salad fingers

By alstahl |

Had a late night dinner. We ordered two different kind of chicken plates and was served food for a week. For starters we shared a charkuterie plate -ish and we got a mountain of salad as well as in the entrees. This place do not serve alcohol but u are welcome to bring your own bottle of wine! Very cozy atmosphere! I would go here again but I would choose something smaller with less salad.

Small but great

By pensfan58 |

Every year for the past four years, a group of friends get together here for a little celebration. We each bring a bottle of wine for the occassion. Knowing the size of the establishment, we arrived early and were able to configure our tables as needed as no one else was there yet. The staff was very accommodating. Over the course of the next three hours or so, the waitstaff attended to us, removing bottles, bringing water, and serving our meals. The food was excellent. While one would tihnk that a small BYOB in the West Village could be romatic, the tables are too close for that. But, if you want to enjoy time with friends over some wine and good food, this is definitely a good choice.

Nice Cafe

By JakeBanchory |

Had a nice lunch here. Service very friendly, though a bit slow, food very nice, especially the salads. You can bring your own wine (wish we'd known that!)

Amazing little find!

By Sarah C |

Such lovely food!! The French onion soup is seriously amazing and the Coq au Vin was Delicious! Such a great little place and the staff are lovely too.

French bakery, Mexican talent

By curious_antik |

It is not a first time when I learn that some of the most excellent ethnic meals that I am eating has been prepared by extremely talented Mexican chefs ! Bravo to every almond croissant, slice of daquise cake and apple tart tatin. A special Kudos goes to apple filled pancake, a huge plate was shared by 8 moaning connoisseurs of good food. Freshly, prepared to order, apple retain their texture and add a touch of acidity. Every sweet, powdered sugar and cinnamon dusted, light, crunchy on the outside luxurious bite ! Breakfast satiated my pallet and eased my nostalgia for Paris, and my neighborhood boulangerie. Staff tries very hard to provide best possible service in the modest real estate. We were a large group of 8, and all 8 very capricious eater were pleased. We had breakfast twice at the cafe over the span of 4 days

A VERY GOOD Find!

By ivan i |

My daughter and her boyfriend took me took this place for a late Friday lunch. They told me there are always big queues and lines for a table at the weekends...and so "it must be good !" A small bistro-like cafe decorated with a French Lighthouse and maritime theme, Tartine is both unremarkable and un-pretentious. The menu is simple and the service prompt. We all had the $14.95 'prix fixe' lunch menu which included a salad or soup to start and a choice of two mains. The French Onion soup was FANTASTIC. The Chicken Milanese which followed was fresh and tasty. The food was great value - the only criticism was that the Creme Brulee had been overcooked BUT the other deserts in the display cabinet looked amazing. This place is highly recommended.

Wonderful

We went for brunch and had the omelets, they were fabulous! Great choice for a Saturday morning brunch!

A treasure in the heart of the Village. A real NYC experience.

By janpal |

A lot of people come here for brunch. I've never had their brunch. I'm sure it's good. Just ate dinner here again last night. This place is a true treasure in the heart of the west village. It's tiny and BYOB. Which is a HUGE plus in NYC. It's also CASH ONLY. The wait staff is terrific and always friendly. It's been here forever. Even with a line growing outside on the sidewalk by 8pm there's no rushing to get the tables cleared. If you don't like small (cozy) you might not like this place. We usually come at about 6pm. By 7 this place is packed and getting a bit noisy. If you've ever been to France you realize NYC restaurants are very loud. We talk too loud here. In Paris they actually whisper in restaurants. We could hear everything a guy two tables away from us was saying. Please can't we all just speak softer. That being said I love NYC and this restaurant. After 30 years they still have our favorites on the menu. We had the Mignonettes and the spicy chicken with guacamole. They're both huge servings and come with great fries and a wonderful salad. We also had the spicy tuna app with guacamole too that was great and easy to share. One table beside us let us try their dessert. They have great desserts. And the other table beside us gave us their left over bottle of wine to finish which we happily did. A wonderful night.

Good Cheap Brunch

By XMarkPhotography |

Great little parisian cafe-esque place. Brunch is very good with solid coffee. Not expensive for the neighborhood.

Great

Always a great choice for any type of meal for 2 to 4 people- Ambiance is the cuttest and food simply delicious. Cash only, byob

What is the fuss about?

By RogerMul78 |

I had heard a lot about Tartine and decided to try it out for a week day lunch. I ordered their "famous" spicy chicken and my friend ordered the gnocchi. Although the restaurant was only half full it took a good 30 mins to get our food and it was honestly terrible. The spicy chicken had no spice and was quite salty. The guacamole and fries were the dish's saving grace. My friend's gnocchi was nothing more than a glorified bowl of mashed potatoes - we'd never seen a pasta-less gnocchi before. It was extremely bland. And the service was pathetic. I'm not sure what the staff was busy doing. Overall, I'd certainly give this place a miss as it's clearly one of those overly-hyped touristy spots with extremely average, bordering on bad food.

Local neighborhood Gem

By Lesley B |

I read some reviews about Tartine and wanted to try it. I heard they do walk in only and usually a line. It just so happens the night we decided to try it, was freezing and snowing unexpectedly, we walked in and got a table. Such a cozy restaurant. I think they have a total of 6 tables. Service and food were perfect. Loved this place so much, will be back. Great for a date night for sure.

Tiny French Bistro

By 920rebecca |

I live in the West Village and this is one of my favorite places. Sure it's tiny, cramped, but that's part of the charm. The dishes are delicious and we've even tried their take out. I usually order the tuna tartare and then pick another appetizer and I'm stuffed. (btw, the gnocchi with smoked mozzarella is quite good.) Entrees are comparable to most restaurants. Definitely worth checking out.

Sunday brunch is Prix Fixe ONLY & CASH only.

By sound_and_visionary |

Oops. Managed to squeeze into a table, drink an orange juice and then realize it was a prix fixe brunch. My fault completely. Decided to skip the $18 brunch and grabbed an almond croissant instead. Tasty. Neighborhood is classic, try to sit outside in better weather. Especially if you are claustrophobic.

Very good home made food in a beautiful location

By Familyon2r |

Tartine has a beautiful location on a West Village corner. From outside the restaurant does not look any special. The interior consist of simple tables and stools, making you wonder about how comfortable the visit will be. The walls are decorated by french maritime pictures and others. We took the todays lunch menu with a soup and a main course. This is a recommendation! Both tasted very good and to the price (22 USD). I think this was very affordable. We would like to come back and enjoy more of their food and location.

Excellent little restaurant

By TONYORLEANS |

We discovered this restaurant by chance. Small establishment good service and good food. The restaurant does not have an alcohol licence so you have to bring your own beer or wine. By the time we left there was a large queue outside.

Oh Dear.....

By Christian C |

Have not been to Tartine in years mostly because the West Village crowds have become so trying thanks to Sex in the City and the Times. Cute and cozy as I remembered, coffee was bad, cappuccino was mediocre, salmon in the Norwegian was as if it had sat in lemon juice for a day, potatoes were delicious, omelette was fine. Just not worth it. Oh and I still can't get over when a server asks if you need change when you hand them the cash for the bill. REALLY? A 40% tip? Serving 101: always assume the customer needs change. A suggestion: "thank you, I'll be right back with your change" this then gives your customer the opportunity to say " oh no, that's all for you" or "thanks" as they wait for you to return with their change.

The best BYOB in NYC

By Joey C |

I first went to Tartine for my birthday, years ago. To be honest, I didn’t remember that much about it. I must have brought some sort of boozy treat I guess. Anyways, flash forward to nowadays. This place is still around; in NYC things come and go like Lindsey Lohan in rehab so the fact that it’s stood the test of times says a lot in and of itself. The food is top notch! The steaks are great. The spicy chicken is awesome. The tuna appetizer is delicious. The onion tart is...I don’t even know a word that’s worthy of this dish. The prices are just as tasty and the fact that you can bring your own bottles makes this place one of NYC’s greatest establishments

Reasonably-priced classic French food in a tiny restaurant

By SWMildcat |

We stumbled upon this little gem at lunchtime on a wander from the High Line towards Washington Square. We were looking for coffee, but when we saw the menu we had to eat! It is very small and some of the inside tables are squashed together. The decor is attractive, maritime-themed Mediterranean. I had the warm lentil salad with greens (delicious) and my co-eater had onion tart (very flavorful and rich) and salad, both served with good bread and butter. Sadly, we had no room for dessert, so I just mournfully admired the beautiful fruit tarts in the display case. Prices were very reasonable for good French food, and the service was excellent.

A great (breakfast) experience with one caveat

By Peter T |

This is old school West Village dining at its finest, but before I continue - I mention breakfast in the title of my review because in all my many years of dining at Tartine (and recommending it to others), I've never been here for dinner! Perhaps the breakfast is so wonderful I don't want to jinx things by branching out. So at breakfast, one word of ordering advice: the apple pancake. Just get it. You can thank me later. I'll say it one more time: the apple pancake. And now the caveat: the indoor dining area is tiny and not well-ventilated. So on warm days - it's warmer inside. On cold days it can be quite cozy, jammed in among your fellow diners HOWEVER warm or cold, because of the ventilation issue, when you leave you will smell of whatever was cooking while you were inside. Some of those smells are wonderful - but still. Do yourself a favor and sit OUTSIDE. I've taken a seat outside in the rain (you're pretty well covered by the front canopy), in high winds (put your napkin under your plate) and in extreme cold (and I'm talking single digit cold, folks); the apple pancake has made it all worthwhile. Sit outside, watch the world pass by and enjoy!

BYOB heaven!

By Lara V |

One of the places that I found about on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop newsletter was a little French Bistro that was around the corner from our hotel called Tartine. The best part about this little gem is that it’s BYOB, so we rocked up with 2 bottles of wine on a warm and rainy New York afternoon prepared for a boozy lunch of note! We started with their onion soup, now I love soup, but this is probably the BEST soup I have ever tasted – wow! Do not go there and not order this, you will miss out! Some things to note about this place though, they only take cash and it’s very small so you are basically on top of the people next to you, unless you are sitting outside. Also you are not allowed to smoke outside at the tables, which is very nice. The service was fine although not very friendly and they don't want you wasting time just hanging out, you need to be eating or drinking or leave! The rest of the food we had there was very good too and the atmosphere especially toward the night time is very vibey.

Great Brunch

By Lizzie_goes |

We stopped here for brunch around 11.30 on a Sunday and got the last table, by the time we left people were queuing in the street despite the snow which shows how popular it is. Its very small so be prepared to be a bit squashed but the food was amazing, salmon sandwich to die for. Very good value, its cash only, no cards.

Always perfect

By pensfan58 |

I really do love this place. We meet here at least once a year for our wine club's "make-it-hurt night". Thus, we're all bringing a good or memorable bottle of wine to share. The restaurant elt's us take our time, catch up with old friends and just enjoy ourselves. The food is excellent and the service is great. I can't really find anything to complain about except maybe the place being a tad bigger!

Delicious French food, cozy bistro

By rmcdUSA |

Superb two couple French meal with BYOB! French onion soup had wonderful flavor, cheesy & yummy. Escargot was delicious, tender with a tasty butter sauce. My generous portion of perfectly cooked salmon with crispy skin, rosemary herbed mashed potatoes & roasted brussel sprouts was fabulous. Husband and one friend had a very generous portion of mussels in a splendid garlic butter sauce. Another had the spicy chicken with a guacamole topping which was very fresh and flavorful. The French bread was airy, crunchy and was a great accompaniment with the soup and for sopping up the escargot and mussel sauces. The creme brûlée was so light and creamy and the apple tart dense and filling. Both capped a perfect dinner with friends. Very filling portions, reasonable pricing, great customer service, outside seating, highly recommend. No reservations for this small bistro but wait wasn’t too long. come early, line for seating grew longer as we ate.

Amazing little bistro in the West Village

By Gregory M |

I can't complement this is a tiny little corner restaurant in the West Village enough. The steak, the chicken, the mushrooms, the soup...all of it delicious. We got to the door in the dead of winter about 30 minutes before they opened for dinner service and were offered a table and some hot tea inside instead of standing outside stomping our feet and blowing in our hands. What I loved about this place (besides the amazing food) was the service - there if you needed but not hovering if you didn't. Don't expect a lot of space between tables. This place is tiny especially in winter with no tables outside. But that's half the charm of eating here. We were asked if we could move to another table so a party of 6 could be accommodated...no problem. These guys are hustling to give you a great meal in a very limited space and your reward is probably one of the best meals at what has to be the most reasonable price ever. And it's BYOB to boot. Beautiful neighborhood, great location, delicious food, great staff, reasonable prices, cozy, informal and BYOB...You can't go wrong.

Great location, amazing food!

By Megan E |

Not only is the food at Tartine just delicious, the location is perfect for a lazy weekend breakfast. A quiet corner with lots of people walking their dogs which to me is just the best. We sat outside and weren't rushed. I had the Croque-Monsieur with roasted potatoes that were perfection. My friend had the Tunisian breakfast which she really enjoyed. Such a lovely experience - try and sit outside and BRING CASH although they do have an ATM.

Bring your own wine and enjoy!

By Matthew L |

Cash only and bring your own wine (no corking fee). This wonderful little place was recommended by a local and what a little gem! There's only seating for about 30ish so get there early and you may have to wait. It's not fancy inside and has not been updates in a number of years but this adds to the atmosphere. The food was super tasty and lots of it. We started with the kale salad and tuna tartar. Then had the spicy chicken and sautéed chicken. It was so nice to sit and enjoy the slower pace of the lower West side. Make your way there. It may not be the best f you have young kids with you. Seating is tight. Enjoy!

Nothing French

By Michele M |

Very nice place in west village looks good and we were suggested by friends of NY!too bad we missed all the cooking of meat from dried chicken to overcooked hamburger! Wouldn't stay there again for food

Nice cafe

Good choices. delicious choices small place usually a line on weekends. Busy for brunch. Not good for groups, small space.

Lovely little French brunch spot

By Becky |

Me and my friend came to Tartine for brunch on a recommendation from a friend. It is a very cute and small French restaurant in the heart of Greenwich village. Which is such a lovely location and good for celeb spotting! We saw Julianne Moore. I ordered French toast- which although nice to start with, I soon found it quite sickly and couldn't finish. If you do decide to order this I'd strongly recommend you share. My friend however had eggs benedict which she raved about- hence the 4 star rating.

Attentive staff. Wonderful lunch food.

By stephrab |

I was wondering around the West Village looking for a place for lunch. Finally found here. The outdoor seating was delightful. The staff was very attentive. The food was a delight. If you’re looking for a low-key place for lunch this is really recommend it.

Brunch for Two

By CirJon |

Warm, wall to wall patrons, extremely attentive staff. Chris and I both had the Corned Beef Hash and enjoyed the meal and the busy pace of the restaurant. Don't miss it.

Excellent lunch spot

By Rita B |

I stopped here for lunch while walking through West Village. The welcome was warm and service efficient. I ordered the thyme-roasted salmon sandwich on ciabatta with a green salad on the side. Both were excellent. Although I did not try them, the house-made European-style pastries looked wonderful.

Good food, excellent value, fun atmosphere

By Gavin1986 |

We were taken here by a New Yorker friend. He lamented the good food which was helped with the fact that you can bring your own wine. The food itself was simple French, usual suspects. Our starters were all really good. We all opted for the steak, as it was a French restaurant I was reluctant to order my steak medium rare as usual, so plumped for medium. While the steak was still delicious I would say that the steak was on the well side of medium. So if like me if you like pink with a bit of juice, go for medium rare, you won't see any red! The staff were friendly and efficient. There was an amusing argument between a couple at the next table which the whole [tiny] restaurant was a party to. After they left all tables burst into conversation about what was going on. It was a fun end to a great meal! I wouldn't recommend going there if you want privacy or plan on being a bickering couple. You will be heard!

Overrated. The food is...

By Annabel T |

Overrated. The food is really not that good. You might see a celebrity once in a while, but it's really not worth it. And, they don't even have a liquor license.

Great little find in the West Village

By Stuart L |

I am a frequent business traveler to New York City, often staying for a night or two. I am always on the lookout for interesting restaurants for dinner. Recently I acted on a friend's advice and went to Tartine. Tartine is a very small French bistro style restaurant that is located in the West Village, on the corner or W. 4th and W. 11th streets. If you're not familiar with the West Village, that sounds confusing, but Tartine is very easy to get to. It is very convenient to the Sheridan Sq./Christopher St. Subway stop, about a 3 or 4 block walk up w.4th. Tartine is small, with approximately 10 tables inside, all close to each other, and perhaps a half dozen tables outside. The day I went was quite hot so I sat inside. I got a small corner table right away when I arrived at about 6:00 (and without a reservation). However, by 6:30, the restaurant was full. The best thing about Tartine is the food, which was uniformly delicious. I had an outstanding tuna tartare as an appetizer, very creamy to the very last bit. For my entree I had a pissaladierre (forgive my spelling), an onion and tomato tart with goat cheese and anchovies. It was tasty, but not extraordinary. Finally, for dessert I had a creme fraiche panda cotta which I thought was to die for. The service was excellent - quiet, unassuming and efficient. The prices are inexpensive - the entire meal was $41 before tip. Tartine does not serve alcohol (though you can bring your own), and does not accept credit cards. I highly recommend Tartine and plan on returning soon.

High Five for the Mussels

By morewierd |

Bro and SIL come here every time they are in the City.....and so we experienced TARTINE. The Kale-Farro Salad was delish....three of us had the mussels......they were plump and unbelievably EXCELLENT....can't remember what SIL had. We shared DAQUOIS cake....4 ways........also 5*. I'd give the mussels a 10* if i could. Service attentive....can't remember what we drank. Water? AH.....yes.....bro bought a bottle of wine...no corkage fee. Bill for 4 with tip was $82.00 CASH. No CC Would return in a heartbeat!

Cute place

By Lin L |

It's a very cute restaurant. I had brunch with my friends there. Good food, but extremely small. The seats were so tight that I didn't have enough room to hang my coat on the back of my chair.

Cool, if tightly packed French bistro BYOB

By Aaron T |

While not the spot for a leisurely romantic dinner, this popular West village eatery has a busy, friendly atmosphere and the food is good. It doesn't have a liquor licence so bring your own bottle, they don't charge corkage. Dishes tend toward the French meditteranean and are simply flavored but well balanced. There were a range of delicious desserts on display, but I didn't succumb.

Heavenly!

By Aniko P |

We've been on a mission to find a place that makes authentic mussels in mariniere sauce with french fries, a family favorite, and this is it. Heavenly!

Not as good second time round

The first time I went was fantastic; no line great food, nice atmosphere. I loved it so much, I introduced my boyfriend to Tartine as a romantic surprise. There was a line when we arrived, worth it I thought. We were told 25-30 mins. In the snow. Anyway, we really didn't mind waiting. Except they let everyone in ahead of us. Because they were in parties of 3 or more. We ended up waiting for about an hour. The people immediately ahead of us in line had already left before we got to even enter the restaurant. I didn't really understand their policy and it took us a while to defrost By going to a nice warm bar. The food was mostly nice but I'm not sure I would recommend Tartine now.

Lovely little restaurant

By IReardon |

Came here for dinner last saturday night. Got the last outdoor table at about 6:30pm and the inside filled up very quickly after that. By the time we were leaving at 8:00pm there was a small queue of people waiting for tables. Service was really friendly, laid back but suitably attentive. The kind waiter pointed us in the direction of the closest wine shop as it's a byob restaurant only. Food was delicious, we had the sautéed chicken with the best fries and the bouchée a la reine which was even tastier. Tart tatin for dessert was perfectly caramelised and delicious. Very good value for the west village and nice big portions. The setting stole the show with a great corner location with outdoor seating in one of the most picturesque areas of NYC! Hope to return and maybe try brunch next time.

Interesting Food in West Village

By YayeMama |

As I sat at a table in NYC's Tartine, located a quiet area of West Village, I felt like I was sitting in the St. Germain section of Paris. Soft music playing in this little restaurant/bistro with a baked goods display and great smells coming from the kitchen. We arrived late for dinner as our group had first gone to a local theater, and were promptly told that the kitchen was closing at 10pm. We quickly perused the menu, decided what we were getting and ordered. This is a BYOB which makes the dining better on the wallet. The menu is French with a large selection of appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts, including pasta, fish, vegetarian and meats. Our group had delicious escargot, tuna tartare, the special soup of the evening (celery root with green apple and croutons), and then the small portion of gnocchi with smoked mozzarella and steak au poivre. In my opinion the cheese in the gnocchi was overpowering and my husband didn't like his steak - he said it lacked taste. The other dishes were superb! Perhaps it was the lateness of the meal which may have been rushed - we're not sure. I'd like to return here for lunch or brunch to really appreciate more of the dishes this little gem has to offer. Our bill for 4 for appetizers, entrees and dessert came out to $170.

Cute Little Place

By Kevin B |

small, so if you have a large group get there early!! Lot of little formica two tops fill the space, have to crowd together for anything over four people. Service seemed to lack a bit, but I did notice they took special care of their "regulars", which i was not. Had breakfast, and have to say the food was pretty good!!

Sunday morning strolls through West Village

By AMANBRAD |

After checking out the gorgeous homes in The Village, I came upon this tiny wee place - great food and such a reasonably priced menu - which included fresh orange and good strong coffee - I will be back

Great choice for dinner.

By Marc Haas |

One of our top favorites in Manhattan. Mussels and fries are outstanding. Bring your own wine a big plus.

Exceptional taste at reasonable price. Seating is a little cramped but charming nonetheless.

Tasty food !! @ Brunch

By Chrisboricua |

Cute little place @ the Village. Fast service (we didn’t waited more than 10 minutes for a table). Good was tasty and cheap (compared to other places in NYC). We will be back in the future.

Quaint with quality

By karen47906 |

We ate here a couple of times for lunch when visiting the area. They have a nice menu with fresh choices to suit anyone. It’s a very small place that can fill up quickly. The service is very attentive but leave your credit card in your wallet. They only accept cash.

Would be 5 stars but for the crush

By Jenny I |

Without a doubt the food is 5* quality. Tuna tartare, warm onion tart, potato gnocchi and sautéed chicken all fabulous. BYOB policy a real winner in this expensive area. And service very efficient. But I would really have liked a wee bit more space to enjoy it all. It really is cramped, and impossible to have a conversation that isn´t overheard by your neighbours. The two girls next to us were discussing a burgeoning office romance and it really was Too Much Information ! It didn´t put us off however because we managed to visit twice during our two week holiday, and would go again for the tuna tartare alone...yum x Be aware this place is cash only - not a problem as long as you know in advance.

Use to go all the time! But less so now.

By Jeremy B |

I used to go to La Tartine all the time in the past; because it was cheap, high-quality and in a nice location. But they have increased their price, reduced quantities and, yet, the (very bad) wait time is still the same. The desserts are still delicious though but I can no longer recommend as strongly as I did five years ago.

Good Bistro, excellent food!

By babubenj |

My experience pretty much reflects the other reviews. Friends who live nearby brought us here. Small, intimate, cozy, dark, very friendly, and ample portions. We had four different dishes, and there were thumbs up on all. Food choices on the heavy side, but two vegetarians were not disappointed. Heads up: cash only.

Not worth a special trip to the Village

By tikvah48 |

We rarely get to this part of city, The Village, but this restaurant was recommended to us by friends. It appears that locals know about Tartine as it is off the beaten path for most tourists . Please note that this restaurant accepts cash only. The service is slow. The food was tasty and the portions ample. This is a small space and does not take much to get crowded. There are a few seats outside for couples. If you can gage how a restaurants feels about its customers by checking out its restrooms- then you should stay away. The bathroom was filthy and were was no toilet paper or paper towels. I am not planning on returning to this place.

Real French!

By VivP2 |

Small, cute place in the heart of West Village and oh what a pleasant surprise: a real French meal. Actually, the mussels were like the real Brussels mussels (they are the best after all!). Everything smelled and tasted French. The service is EXCELLENT. Try the beet salad too. Go early, there's a long line on the weekends but it is worth the wait for sure!!

Cute but disappointing

By madd |

We came here looking for a steak au poivre. The restaurant was TINY but charming and in a nice area. I had a latte (abysmal) and a small serve of cheddar and Brussels sprout gnocchi. The gnocchi was quite nice and I found the small serve big enough for me. The salads looked huge. The steak was quite disappointing. The piece of meat was quite small and the sauce tasted like pepper only. I think this is probably better as a brunch place.

A Pint Sized Slice of France

By Laine A |

Nothing like alfresco dining in the city, especially weather permitting. In the Village on 11th west of 4th is a little place that feels a little like a laid back Paris. Unpretentious, but inspiring, the kind of place that gets a day started or offers a little afternoon solace from everything that is the busy-ness of the city. If you're dining on the street, squeeze in and make yourself comfortable. The service is laissez faire, but that is what you came here for, the leisurely art of eating and relaxation, a respite from the city in the city. The menu is french inspired pub, everyday offerings that are fresh, feel farm to table ingredients with whimsical french mashups to tempt even a discerning taste bud. It's cozy, personal and everything slowing down to take in a meal should be.

Best BYOB around!

By KWS63 |

Always crowded, almost always a wait but once you get a table it's well worth it. I love to sit outside on a crisp fall morning drinking a byob mimosa with their yummy coffee and a delicious egg dish. Quintessential West Village. Tarting has been around FOREVER and there is a reason why!

Delicious food comes out...

By 08242011h |

Delicious food comes out of this little french bistro- and it is little- you are literally on top of your neighbor but there isn't a line out the door for nothing. They have tables outside and you can take your dog. Great french food especially the tower of chicken pot pie in puff pastry.

Bring Your Own Wine (BYOW)

By AirSchis |

Yup, at this casual French bistro in the West Village you bring your own wine. Their food is pretty good and the service is fairly prompt. We had dinner there with a friend for the second time. It is now the Fall so we were inside. Small space and not a lot of tables. If you want to be seated get there between 6:30 and 7. Bring your wine and they will open with no corkage fee. Treat yourself to a nice bottle or bottles. Simple French food with a long list of appetizers to choose from. The steaks were done exactly as we wanted. Excellent tasting meal highlighted by the fact we brought two nice bottles of red. The dessert was large and yummy. They can be seen in the glass case.

A Very Special Experience

By Dereleact |

We had an outside table in this neighbourhood bustling bistro. Do not expect linens and fine dining but great food in a congenial atmosphere. The food was great--see the photo of my wife's tuna dish. Many passersby and an errant solo cellist, barely audible over the traffic--yes quite noisy, but it is Manhattan.

Cozy, Delicious and Great All Around Sunday Brunch

By PacificBlackBird |

Very small place with every inch used up to sit guests. No reservations, but our group of 6 got there before 11am on a Sunday and got a table within 20 minutes. They even served us coffee while waiting outside in the sun as it was a beautiful day. Be warned though that when we left before noon the line was probably an hour long or even more outside. The choices on the menu look appealing, and they’re even better in reality. Prepared with love, well presented, and delicious. Good service and cozy atmosphere. Less than 10 minutes from the Highline trail start. Removed one start because the meal was heavier on my stomach than usually; maybe unrelated, but the coincidence was suspicious enough.

Amazing

By Adrianalfp |

I love this place to go for brunch. The food is delicious, the ambiance is great, and the price is super fair. They don't accept credit cards, at least they didn't used to. I was once poorly treated by one of the waitress, but the owner was soo polite that I couldn't care less. I would definitely go back, this place is lovely. Oh and get here early or get ready to wait for a long time to be seated. Make sure you try the apple pancake!!!

BYOB is not the only attraction here

By Oliver S |

Friends draggued me there for brunch. They made me an offer I could not resist: the place is BYOB (no fees at all!). Armed with some Prosecco purchased at Eately(23rd St) we head for La Tartine (11th&4th St), a pleasant Village location surrounded by leafy trees and shades. Yes, there is such a thing as two numbered STREETS intersecting, it's in the West Village. La Tartine, which bills itself as a "French Bistro" turns out to be quite small, but with a surprisingly interesting menu. The brunch offereings are mostly typical brunch, so we opt for the full menu (it's almost 3:30 and they serve brunch until 4PM). The escargot with garlic, parsely & anise butter is delicious, other people on our table have pissaladiere (a scrumptious tomatoes and onions tart), mussels & French fries and, the creme de la creme, bouchee a la reine (a mouth-watering puff pastry filled with chicken, quenelles, sage and mushrooms). I get top ratings from all participants and I don't think it's only because they are drinking good bubbly. La Tartine graciously supplied the glasses, as soon as our waitress saw the wine on the table. Prices are very reasonable and service prompt. TIP: After you finish your wine (and accompanying food), walk one block West to Bleecker Street, and turn left for a long leisurely walk; you will need that long walk after all the food and wine. Along Bleecker Street, among boutiques, bars and the occasional gallery, you will see much of what’s good about New York City (and some of what’s not so good about it). When you reach Lafayette, turn left (Uptown) and walk two blocks to Astor Wines & Spirits, one of my preferred places to shop for booze in the City. They would deliver for free to most places in Manhattan. You can pick your selection and they’ll bring it next day. Of course, you can also order from their WEB site and they’ll deliver. But I like to go there in person, if I am in the neighborhood: store and personnel are always pleasant, much educational tasting is going on at all times and it’s just a fun place to visit.

Amazing food for a good price

By D C |

The food was delicious. During a tourist visit to NYC, we went out of our way to squeeze this in as our last lunch stop before speeding to the airport and barely making our flight. So worth it! We had the Coq au Vin, french onion soup, and grilled chicken sandwich.

Best Breakfast

By dmh2662 |

This was our last day in New York city and while walking around we found this quaint little restaurant on the corner. Maybe 16 people can fit in the dining area. I had eggs Benedict with Gravlax and potatoes. Perfection! My boyfriend had the omelet and said it was the best he has ever had. Bring cash they don't accept any credit cards. Plan on at least $20 per person for breakfast.

try getting in, even harder, try staying on the outside...

By selcukny |

this is a great no bs, no drama french bistro fare. no reservations and byob. there are a couple of good wine spots on 7th and 8th aves, so no worries, you will have plenty of time waiting to get in - choose your dish, choose your wine, leave one of your buddies holding your spot, go get the wine , come back... Food is consistent, not the best but good. very appetizing big dishes. try the french classics if you can. well, actually most of it is classic, simple, french food. lines can be exhausting but try to strike a conversation with your fellow liners... the walls are covered with very simple frenchish artifacts, well actually Mediterranean... nice, cozy, small spot that has been chugging along... bring your own wine, you got that , right? desserts are great, really fun. eat fast, leave a nice tip, don't linger and leave so we can get in...

Cramped, noisy, lots of character and tasty!

By DouglasR |

I've been lucky enough to visit NYC seven times now. I've been to Tartine on each of my last four visits. Why would I do that when there are thousands to choose from? The simple answer is that is serves tasty unpretentious French bistro food to locals and tourists in a unique setting. Unique, because it’s so cramped and noisy and you always to queue. It’s also a BYOB, which is quite rare. The prices are very reasonable too. On my last trip I ate at the Grammercy Tavern twice and Tartine twice. The former is rated on Tripadvisor at No 10 in New York City. Tartine is 1066. Is the Grammercy Tavern really that much better? It is if you don’t like cramped noisy conditions (you still have to queue if you don't have a booking though!) or you are meeting a client or if you are taking someone for a special dinner. It isn't if you just want a decent meal, can enjoy the atmosphere and don't want to splash the cash too much.

Poached Eggs is what they do...

By Baggia24 |

If you like poached eggs you will LOVE Tartine. This is tiny place in the Village so on the weekend you may have to wait. We go lucky and go a table at 1pm on a Saturday which is slightly unheard of in NYC. Anyway, they have a variety of poached egg dishes and they are amazing. They have other choices as well such as, french toast and pancakes etc., but you would go for the eggs.

Delicious food, great service, amazing location

By Franac |

Visited here on our first night in NY. The place is absolutely tiny but we were seated straight away, with the bottle of wine we bought whipped off to be opened. The found was outstanding, and really reasonably priced. Service was friendly, prompt and unintrusive. Loved it!!

Excellent Brunch

By cas250 |

I like to have brunch at Tartines when visiting New York. The restaurant is located on a quiet street in the Village (11th St. and 4th Ave.) so it's a perfect spot to eat outside on a beautiful day. The eggs benedict and eggs florentine are wonderful. The service is excellent. I highly recommend this for solo travelers, couples or small groups of 4 or less.

Save Money on BYOB

By Maddie G |

This is one of the cutest little neighborhood spots. The service isn't 4-starts usually because there's only one waitress working the whole place, but once your order is in, food comes out fast! I love getting a few bottles of wine and going with a small group-- anything more than 4 people will be hard to seat, though.

Absolutely awesome !

By maltyone |

We were so impressed we wound up returning 3x during our 10 day stay Its tiny and doesn't stay open super late so take heed Nothing touches their mussels and frites this side of the Atlantic, seriously, both kinds (wine and curried) are ridiculously yummy, my wife found the creme brule impossible to resist Lastly, there is a great wine store a block away, so BYOB and enjoy

Crowded + terrible service = disaster

By Renato Verdegay |

I've tried a romantic brunch with my girfriend but it is too crowded for anything romantic. The waitress asked us to change tables in order to acommodate a large group in our table. We ended in a bad spot and the waitress refused to change us for another one, offering it to new clients. Also, it can be noisy because it is small. People told me that the food is great, but we felt so disrespected that we left before the food arrive.

BEST brunch in town

By DP710 |

Truly delicious meal at the quaint Tartine. The grilled chicken sandwich might be one of the best things I ate on my entire trip- if that's even possible. Even better- BYOB. Small spot, they don't take reservations but food comes out pretty fast so you won't have to wait long.

Grea brunch in a great place

By Lola M |

This is a small, nice restaurant located in the heart of the West Village. We stopped by on Sunday for brunch and loved it. The eggs Benedict were just perfect. There is no alcohol (so no mimosas...) and they only accept cash. Will definitely go back!

Great Bistro

By 717DTillman |

I ordered the well-seasoned Spicy Chicken with salad, guacamole and fries, which were excellent. My dinner partner began with the Beat and Mango Salad appetizer followed by the Veal Milanese with Baby Arugula, Sherry Vinaigrette & Parmesan entree. Unfortunately, the veal was breaded, and my dinner parter has a gluten allergy. When we brought this to the waitresses' attention, she offered to speak to the manager about exchanging the veal for Risotto aux Champignons. The Risotto dish came with Arborio Rice, Cremini & Oyster Mushrooms, Shaved Parmesan & White Truffle Oil. After such a great meal and impeccable service, we were sure to leave an equivalent gratuity.

LOVE the food. Amazing atmosphere. Tiny, tiny dining room so arrive before 6PM. Everything was tasty...enhanced only by a bottle of water which was fine. It's a BYOB.

Great evening, great food, great friends

By pensfan58 |

The only issue I could have with Tartine is the size. With 5 guys, we were somewhat shoehorned into our space, but the staff was accommodating and we slid another table a little to create just enough room. That said, you are still likely to be rubbing shoulders with the table next to or behind you. Other than that, it was a perfect evening. Being a BYOB allowed us to each bring a bottle and sample some outstanding wine. But what madde the evening was the pleasant staff and great food. My Tartine Croutons (really a crostini) was excellant and the homemade gnochi with spicy lamb sausage was incredible. We had no issues with the service or the bill (as some prior reviews mention). Maybe going mid-week and getting there at 5:30 hlped? Regardless, we'll be back!

Good food, good service, tight space

We had brunch there, the food was good. We wanted to try the desserts but didn't. They have a berry crumble that I will definitely go back there to try!

Cramped and uncomfortable Sunday brunch

By franklin1963 |

Two of us had Sunday brunch here. $18 Prix fixe and cash only, with no bar (BYOB). I suspect the experience would have been dramatically better had I come for dinner or lunch during a weekday, but this was one of the strangest meals I've had anywhere. About 25 patrons and 3 waiters were crammed into a space about 12 X 25 feet. There was less than a foot between tables, and the waiters had to squeeze themselves between tables to take orders and serve. There was literally nowhere for anyone to stand who wasn't eating or serving. A busboy with a large tray of dirty dishes kept coming out of the kitchen and going somewhere in the depths of the building. The number of people who were being served here, the speed with with the food came out of the kitchen, and the lack of space made for a surreal and chaotic experience. After we had ordered, two people were seated beside us at our four top (we were warned this could happen). There was no room to separate the two tables, and we spent the next 45 minutes with about 18 inches of space between these two strangers and the pastry counter, with our coats on our laps. I realize this is New York City, but surely there must be a limit to what a paying customer is asked to put up with? It was truly ridiculous. And now, the food. While my vodka-cured gravlox served on a crisp potato latke was fabulous, as was the warmed apple galette I took away with me at the end of the meal, my companion's corned beef hash was ordinary. Tartine bills itself as a "cafe," but the coffee was vile (weak, filter drip or percolator), and when I asked for cream, I was told they serve only milk. What gives? Where was the espresso? Or was this just what the brunch customers get? It's beyond me why people are lining up and waiting for this. The baked goods looked delicious, and based on the galette I had, they are worth going out of your way to buy. But take them home with you, as there's no reason to subject yourself to eating in this space.

Hidden French Gem!

By AttyCSB |

Went here for lunch and was blown away at the quality of the food at such affordable prices in NYC! We had the escargot to start, French onion soup, the coq au vin and the chicken Milanese. For dessert we had the chocolate meringue cake. Everything was delicious! Worth a visit in the west village area and it's byob! They only accept cash though so come prepared.

Best BYOB in NYC

By Kvnyusa |

We live in the west village and for us this is one of the most charming dinner options in the neighborhood. Tartine is always very good and you will never leave hungry ( portions are quite big ). Be prepared to wait if you show up around/after 8pm. Cash only. Unfortunately Tartine has two tiny problems : the little dining room can be quite " warm " ( the AC doesn't exactly work properly ) and the waiters are not exactly the friendliest. They never even try to fake a smile. If they are available try to grab a table outside and enjoy your meal with your own bottle of wine.

Best Value Meal in NYC

By AmarilloSlim |

I'm a long-time NYer and haven't tried them all, but I've tried many, and count this as the best value dinner in NYC (can't speak to the brunch)...food and service always excellent...BYO policy with no corking fee (good luck finding another in this town!). When I say "best value dinner in NYC", I'm excluding things like food trucks and stands...that ain't dinner! Get there early or be prepared to wait!

Quaint French Bistro

By Doris B |

Nice atmosphere in a tiny French Bistro in the West Village. Tartine opens at 5:30 PM and we arrived by 6 PM, when we still had a choice of tables for 2. By 7 PM the place was filled. My friend ordered 2 appetizers in lieu of a main course: Escargots were fresh and delicious! The duck leg served on a bed of salad tasted good, but was just a bit dry. I enjoyed the roasted chicken on mashed potatoes, gravy, and asparagus. It was excellent! Our dessert choice, the dark chocolate parfait was superb. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Really great experience! Bring your own wine! There is no corking fee.

Applecious pancakes...

By Seppela |

A great spot for breakfast with a French touch. I've found there bottles of Lorina soda, a quite local maker in eastern France that apparently made his way to the Village. A special word for their tasty, huge and yet light and soft apple filled pancakes.

Not sure why others love it

By ThrutheSky |

Ordered special of avocado toast which had two eggs and sriracha sauce, but I didn't want the eggs. Received a pece of bread on which it wouldn't have Been possible to have fit two eggs and no Sriracha sauce. The 'mesclun' had been replaced with watercress which had been thrown on the plate, not even trimmed. This was also my first experience not having had a price reduction because of my egg free choice. Nothing conducive to wanting to return.

my worst new york experience, worst food, worst service

By manulescorts |

This little restaurant is based in a small and nice street in the west village and looks very inviting. I was passing there around 4 PM and the restaurant was almost empty, so I asked if it was possible to make a reservation for 8 PM. The rude waitress told me that if I wanted a reservation I should just sit down and order. Although I should have known better I went back around 7.30 and we were seated at a table for 2 (again without being welcomed). First surprise only cash payments are accepted (IRS ???), second surprise no beer or wine on the menu, third surprise no airco (it was 36° celcius, 95° F), fourth surprise no decent chairs and extremely small tables and almost impossible to move around without disturbing other customers. The waitress who served us was extremely rude. When my friend asked if he could get french fries in stead of a salad, she told us that if he wanted french fries he could eat mine or pay for them. The food was not good, the fries were cold, the liter of mineral water mentioned on the menu was served in a bottle of 750 ml. Nobody asked us if the food was ok. We were in and out in less then 40 minutes, some people spent more time at Mc Donald ! When asking for the check they added an 18% service tax, which I kindly reduced to 0%. Service is about a welcoming smile, comfortable seating, good food and good wine, nice temperature, feeling welcome and be able to pay how you want and to add the tip you want !!!! If you really want to enjoy a good bottle of wine then I would suggest you to drink it at home and not to have your evening spoiled in a lousy place with lousy food.

Great food great value

Even though the weather has turned cold, we are still looking for restaurants with outdoor seating. On our daughters recommendation, we found Tartine. The food was delicious, the service extremely accommodating, (rather than eating potatoes, we asked for a side salad. They brought us HUGE bowl that had oil in it and I sent it back. The wait staff graciously brought me a different salad with no dressing.) We sat in a cozy heated tent. And best of all, it is BYOB

AMBIENCE FOR AN AL FRESCO LUNCH

By Catmom95 |

Great little lunch spot. I happened upon this little place while I was walking the area. I grabbed an outside table as it was a gorgeous late summer day. Wonderful grilled salmon on fresh, crusty bread with a side salad and a fruity vinegarette. With herbal tea, tax and tip was under $20. Bargain for NYC. They also had a tempting array of pastries which I did not partake of but they looked delicious!

delish!

By KatGD |

Tartine is a cute little French cafe located on W 4th & W 11th Streets on a very charming block in the West Village. A friend recommended this place to me for dinner, specifically for a dinner out with your girls. The food is pretty standard French bistro/cafe fare but is really delicious, at every course. We did not have to wait (timing!) but it is a cozy little spot and they don't take reservations so you might have to wait for a table. Much like a bistro in France, they don't shove you out the door either so you can have dessert and coffee and enjoy the company! Also notable: BYOB (yes!!!!!!!!) and cash only.

Visited for lunch, fresh food but tiny cafe!

By Paula C |

I met some friends here for lunch, the food was tasty and fresh but the place was packed and there wasn't much room to move around. I had to move my chair a few times to let people pass to go to the bathroom... Also the restaurant does not take reservations :/

good food, great location, great staff

By rbdick1zippy63 |

Went there on a warm spring afternoon for an early dinner after taking my son to the Guggenhiem. Our time at Tartine was a perfect end to a perfect day. We only had to wait about 15min for a table outside ,which gave me time to pickup some wine for dinner. The waiter we had was helpful and very courteous, he was always there when we need him. I had the escargot with sirloin tips and finished with the creme brulee. Everything tasted great. (ordered a second of escargot it was so good.) The neighborhood is quiet and relaxing.....I didn't want to leave. If you have a chance , check this place out, you wont regret it.

Amazing omelettes in a cute neighborhood!

This place is perfect for brunch! Prix fixe menu and the food is delicious! One of the best omelets I have ever had! Service is efficient as well and the fact that it is in West Village gives it a lovely vibe. I hadn't been back in 4 years and I have to say that I am still as enthusiastic as back then about Tartine!

By Iceman893Bg |

I was expecting a bigger restaurant so it was a little bit hard to find. this place was suggested by my travel guide and so i decided to have breakfast here. i ordered a nice omelette with bacon and potatos and it was very good. Nice price, worth a visit for budget travelers looking for a good way to start their journey

Delightful Monday lunch!

By Gule2014 |

We ordered the2-course lunch menu - scrumptious and great value. Wasn’t busy on Monday, so no waiting for a table. Warmly recommend!

Benny - phenomenal server!

Great food, amazing service, reasonable prices, and you can bring your own bottle of wine. What more can you ask for? Oh, you should try their spicy chicken. Delicious!

For a lazy brunch...

Great place in the Village to have a Sunday brunch. Fix price for eggs juicy and coffe. Eggs very good. Service fast and friendly.

I love this place.

Every time I visit my sister in NYC, we must go here. The place is tiny, and you may end up waiting if you don't arrive early enough, but it's totally worth it. The corned beef hash is amazing. The croques are awesomely worth the 2000 calories (you'll walk it off). Even the sort of hung over wait staff helps contribute to this quaint West Village find.

The best little French Bistro in NYC.

Charming restaurant

By Aburel |

Pre jazz dinner among friends… village restaurant with nice people, both customers and staff… got a place because it has been a bit early so reserve in advance… not a huge menu, a plus to me but one with a bit for everybody… we picked a rose, Cote de Provence…then mushroom soup from the daily offer or burrata…then either salmon, fig salad or clams…. No time for dessert…. A very charming place from all prospectives… food, atmosphere, service…

The World's Most Perfect Breakfast

By LamorindaMama |

We've been going to Tartine for brunch for more than a decade and it never disappoints. The food is delicious and an excellent value. And you will not find a tastier almond croissant anywhere. Tartine is a genuine NYC gem.

Lovely BYOB restaurant in the West Village.

By rarot |

Cute very small restaurant. No reservations. Seating was tight but that just added to the ambiance. Food was excellent and fairly priced. Service was great. French onion soup was one of the better ones I have ever had. Mussels were perfect and filling. Especially like that it is one of the very few restaurants in NYC that is BYOB without a corkage fee. Recommended Highly. Will definitely be back.

An amazing treat

Came across Tartine as we were wandering through the Village. Saw high Yelp ratings and went for it. Everything we had was amazing. We had the sautéed chicken and spicy chicken, which were phenomenal. Service was excellent. The dessert offering was impressive, but we were too full. Be warned, cash only.

Relaxed and Friendly

I enjoyed dinner at Tartine with my daughter. FOOD: The Kale Salad made for an excellent appetizer (enough for two to share), and our entrees were very good. This is a restaurant to visit for well-made and tasty, but generally simple dishes, which is exactly the kind of establishment I most enjoy. It has the feel and types of food choices one might experience in a local restaurant in southern France. SERVICE: The service was very good -- friendly and available, but not hovering -- and the server was knowledgeable as well as focused on providing an enjoyable customer experience. FACILITY: The facility is, as other reviewers have said, quite small and cozy. In addition to the interior space, there are a few small tables for al fresco dining. Due to the combination of Tartine's popularity and small size, there is often a wait to get in. Planning an early meal goes a long way toward solving this problem. My daughter and I had no wait at all arriving for Saturday dinner at about 5:30. OTHER: This is a cash only establishment, which it is claimed helps keep the cost down. Tartine does indeed provide good value as compared to other downtown Manhattan eateries, but reduced cost is most definitely relative.

Great village neighborhood brunch spot

By lreid46 |

Found this gem in the Village. Corner spot with a few tables inside and out. The Sunday morning was so nice we sat outside. They open at 10am we got there about 10:30. Menu had all inclusive meal, coffee and orange juice for $18. We enjoyed 2 poached egg with homemade hash skillet with sirracha sauce and I had the 2 poached eggs with spinach, bell pepper on toasted roll and sirracha sauce. Both were good size so filling. The coffee was strong and good stuff. The staff is very nice and attentive but not rushing you. We ask directions so we could walk and shop at Soapology afterwards. Very pleasant place with good food. Would go back again

Lovely neighbourhood spot.

Randomly came across this amazing bistro

By danschaumann |

I was in the area with my girlfriend to see the Sex & The City apartment when we stumbled upon this incredible French restaurant just up the road and decided to try it out for brunch. We arrived just before the Saturday morning rush and were struck by its intimate, pleasant ambience. The menu looked delectable to our hungry bellies; I tried the Tunisian breakfast and my girlfriend got the French toast. There was a slight problem with our order when it came out but it was resolved quickly & easily. The food was of great quality, miles above the diner-style brunch we had elsewhere on our trip. It was honestly one of our favourite experiences during our long weekend in NYC. An affordable, quality meal in a homely atmosphere among beautiful Greenwich Village.

Tartines

Greatest spot to savor New York quaintness and good food. Best part- you can bring your own wine! Negative- it's small so the wait can be long. But well worth it.

West village neighborhood gem

By chichiSouthCarolina |

My daughter had already been here several times and introduced us to this charming corner bistro in a west village neighborhood. It has a very laid back atmosphere, is quaint and small. There are a few outdoor tables. They fill up fast as they do not accept reservations. This is a cash only, BYOB establishment! The prices are very good as well as the high quality French style food. We had the gnocchi, roasted fig salad, French onion soup, and a chicken dish. All were very good and most flavorable. Our fav was the roasted fig salad. Recommend arriving early evening to get a table. Don't forget your wine!

Small Bistro with Fantastic Food

By phoebe24 |

Cute little local french bistro with exceptional food! Must order the Boucher a la Reine at lunch or dinner and the potatos at breakfast. The sauces are incredible! Go earlier this place gets crazy busy and it is tiny.

Great food, small restaurant

By Henriette A |

My girlfriend and I have eaten here a couple of times during our vacation here in NYC. The restaurant gives great value for your money, the food is great! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good place to eat brunch. The only thing stopping me from giving a top review is the small locations, the inside of the restaurant gets filled up real fast. But other than that, a great experience!

It was nice until a loudmouth lady sat too close

By Harmonicaharold |

Warmly recommended by a friend, we checked it out for lunch and everything was wonderful until a very loud lady sat in the too close tables almost inside my ear. I could barely hear myself, so we finished our food quickly and left feeling very bummed out. Because this is a tiny place, obviously the owners try to jam in as many tables as possible. Service was slow but food and price excellent.

Aussie in NY seeking French food

By chuin |

This is excellent French provincial style food. Great value and cosy. Doesn't take reservations so unless you want to stand in line (not fun in 3C) get there early. I arrived about 7.30 pm and just beat the crowd. It is BYO, but buy before you get there. There was a table that was seated and then someone left to buy a drink; they took a while ( a good while too) and the rest of the table were asked to leave! Perhaps unfair but there was a long line of customers waiting, so be warned. (The table was warned too.) It is definitely worth the wait and the visit in this part of town.

Very nice!

By cipi03 |

A very nice small French restaurant in the lower east side of New York. I think it's a very beautiful part of the city, the location is very small, I suggest to have dinner outside, there are a few tables. The service is good and the waitress are nice. The food was very good, the amazing thing is that you can bring your own wine! Unfortunately you can only pay cash, the prices were ok. Yep 😜

Super cute! Great breakfast!!!

By Josiecooper18 |

The famous Tartine in West Village. We were staying around the corner and discovered this busy little gem. It's super small & Cosy inside which really ads to the atmosphere - a great breakfast!! Highly recommend you visit tartine, it's super cute.

NOT TO BE MISSED IN GREENWICH VILLAGE

By Bruno L |

The place is perfect, located in the heart of Greenwich Village and we ate very well there, the welcome is friendly, relaxed in a warm and calm setting with a very successful vintage atmosphere. I highly recommend.

Parisian Feeling

By jacqueline622 |

This little bistro has the authentic feel of Paris. It is small and the tables are tight and it has no frills by any means. The food, however, is great and the value can't be beat. And best of all - it is BYOB! The mushroom strudel was amazing - I highly recommend it! The service may not be overly friendly but it is definitely efficient. As many others have said - cash only and no reservations!

Cozy and delicious

By Idania28 |

I love going into the city on New Years Day and trying a new brunch place. I happen to pick Tartine based on Yelp reviews (thank you fellow Yelpers). The place is very small but makes up for this with delicious food at reasonable prices. We didn't wait but be prepared to wait- well worth it. Homemade corned beef hash with poached eggs and their Sriracha Hollandaise sauce in a cute skillet- excellent Brioche toast- flaky and very good Blueberry financier - perfect crust and fresh filling- loved it Their coffee was just right along with the Tropicana oj- included in the prix fixe brunch. BYOB is a plus. Great find in a charming area Cash only

Great Brunch

By suztuc |

This is a very small space, but the food is very classy, service is superior, and BYOB is the topper! Nestled in a little corner of Greenwich, this restaurant is cash only and worth the trip!

Sophisticated NYers Know Great Food & Value

By Anthony R |

I've been going to this wonderful little bistro for 15+ years and the food is always consistently delicious. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and the atmosphere charming all in one of NYC's prettiest neighborhoods. Also, it is BYOB! The Steak au poivre is excellent and the dacquoise is a perfect way to end a great meal.
