Great American doughnuts

By traveller262 |

I had heard that American doughnuts are different to Australian so I wanted to try them out. This shop was near our hotel. I bought two flavours. They were fresh tasting (even though it was the middle of the afternoon when I bought them). Lots of options for all tastes.

Good, but there is better.

Having enjoyed the fried Dough, though less-so service, at Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto’s The Doughnut Project in 2017 it was with tempered expectations that a new location at 912 7th Avenue was visited Sunday, the smaller floorplan thankfully doing nothing to diminish selection while staff was efficient and pleasant. Known to generate lines on Morton Street in the West Village since 2015 Doughnut Project number two continues to focus on producing unique toppings for a collection of leavened Brioche, popular choices like “Everything” and Lemon Love Letter always available while several daily specials are also rotated frequently. Tightly packed and close to Central Park, arrival at 9:00am finding a small line, it was in four items that $15.50 was invested and taking the box outdoors to indulge it was with fingers quickly sticky that White Chocolate with Pink Peppercorn Glaze came first, the base springy and exceptional while just a touch of heat was detected amidst sweetened Cocoa Butter. Described as “Mad Scientists,” though the “New Old Fashioned Doughnut” looks and tastes awfully similar to that at Blue Star out West, it was returning to raised rings that Whiskey and Espresso came strong, the bitterness barely kept in check by Sugar while a best-seller called The Bronx comes out of left-field but performs remarkably well by using Olive Oil to form Icing that is then kicked up with Black Pepper.

Some of the best and most unique doughnuts NYC has to offer

This is my favorite doughnut shop in NYC, and I have hit pretty much all of the major ones. My personal favorites here are the maple bacon and the everything. The everything doughnut sounds kind of gross, but after trying it, I'm sold. I would give it a try if you like a cream cheese icing. They also have rotating flavors that are typically pretty interesting and tasty as well.

Amazing donuts

This place is donut heaven. Don’t go expecting a cheap donut- go expecting an amazing donut that is different from every other generic donut you’ve ever eaten. Worth it!

Amazing Donut - Tasted Great

Good Value for Money - Great choice of Flavours - Would love to have a Doughnut Project at home! Thanks!

Good doughnut

On our way from times Square to Central Park, we stopped at the doughnut project as we craved a doughnut and we wished to compare one of theirs with the other we have had during our stay in NY. The place is a hole-in-the-wall shop, with doughnuts and coffee on sale; we chose a whiskey-glazed doughnut which was very fluffy, had a mild whiskey scent/taste and was overall good, although on the pricier side in my opinion. A good doughnut, although I discovered I love more old-fashioned doughnuts.

Great donut, good taste. We have taken four to taste together. We all enjoyed them. Visited various other stores. These are really the best in New York.

Stayed in the city over the weekend at the Park Central Hotel and 2 blocks away was The Doughnut Project ship which is a little storefront nothing fancy but mmmmm good donuts. We only grabbed 2 because it was before dinner and didn’t want to spoil our dinner but had to try them before they ran out. We tried the lemon glazed which was a traditional yeast donut with lemon flavor and it was excellent. The 2nd one we tried was good but not what we expected. It was beet with ricotta filling. The beet icing was sweet but not overly and the generous ricotta filling was actually on the salty side which was not expected. It was good though. Totally different! Can’t wait to come back and try the other flavors. I love doughnuts. We hit them all from Boston to Tennessee to Florida to California. We are a donut family!

Yeah, best donuts ever.

Have often been disappointed by high-end donut shops. However, this was entirely different. Incredibly fresh and creative donuts. Flew home with some and tempted to go back to NYC just for their donuts. Had the Bronx and Chandonut Rose--awesome both.

One of the best!

Bold statement coming...Doughnut Project is one of the best donut places I’ve ever tried. Food 5/5 It’s all in the dough to glaze/filling ratio. D Project absolutely nails this aspect of it and then go further. The birthday cake filling is legit thick af sweet frosting and it’s loaded! The peanut butter and jelly had so much filling after one bite it posed everywhere. Those were my two favourite! Service 4/5 Always hard to rate service for a small, quick service shop but I had no problems. Quick and easy. Not much seating but it’s NY after all. Location 3.5/5 There’s two locations but I only went to one. I found it a bit out of the way but I was on foot. Value 4/5 Expect typical New York prices meaning higher than the chain restaurants. But also expect unreal quality to make you want to go back ASAP.

Great doughnuts

We had the maple bacon bar and the black gold doughnut on our visit here as we were walking to Central Park. The bacon bar was excellent, superb, brilliant, it was all you could want. The black gold was nice but very strong and very sweet. Just a little bit too much.

These doughnuts were delicious! My partner advised me that the coffee was really good. As mentioned earlier they offer some weird but wonderful flavours. Also the staff were extremely helpful and kind.

Best donuts and right next to Central Park!

Perfect breakfast before exploring Central Park! It's right next door! Amazing homemade donuts and really good coffee. They had some fun combos to choose from!

Don't come here unless you want to be disappointed

L O L. This place is such a joke. Take a look at the photos of what I was supposed to get versus what I actually got. Had a truly disappointing experience here! Came for their Matcha doughnut collab with T2Tea and was expecting something amazing after the photos I saw on their Instagram... I left with something that looked like half of their Instagram... Look at the pics and see for yourself! I wish I had gotten more pictures of the filling, but there was truly nothing filled about the donut... It was missing the matcha whipped cream and was so tiny for $4.75!! Tinier than the small square piece of napkin it was on... I actually wouldn't have minded the price I paid if 1. It was actually filled like it was supposed to be and 2. It actually had all the components it said it would have ‍ 1/10 would not recommend unless you go there and get a normal doughnut because then you won't have been deceived by a lack of filling and lack of actual ingredients! Also this is such a tiny shop.

I like to consider myself a doughnut connoisseur

I am a doughnut fan and always look to try new ones while traveling. While in NYC visiting my daughter we went to The Doughnut Project for a little pre-brunch snack. As some have mentioned, the line can be long but it moves fast so don't be discouraged. There was an excellent, unique selection of donuts and the line gave me plenty of time...to change my mind three times before deciding on the PB & J filled doughnut with a blackberry glaze and my daughter, well she went with the new old fashion. At this visit during Pride Month we purchased rainbow doughnut shirts which were a great souvenir to bring back to Maine. If we were not heading to brunch I may have tried the famous maple glazed bacon doughnut or the CBD doughnut. My next visit to the city will include a stop here!

Amazing gourmet donuts in the heart of Manhattan!

I had a coffee and two of their amazing donuts -- the blackout was topped with chocolate and brownie pieces and was definitely one of the best chocodonuts I've ever had, but the lemon glazed with sea salt was really something special. I wanted to try all of them, the raspberry filled and the maple bacon looked amazing but I could only have a couple. They might want to think of doing a smaller sample pack so people can opt for lots of little tastes instead of one or two.

Meh!

First of all, the staff was FANTASTIC. Owners -- please be advised that NOTHING below should reflect on your staff. They were darling. We saw The Donut Project on Baked. So, we had to try. The star of that show was the Everything Donut. But, they were out that day. Sold out. Good for you! So we chose a few others, and the were allowed to sample the donut of the day [which ended up perhaps being the best one]. We got a pink rose donut, which was okay, a little sweet, very pretty. The donut itself was okay, nothing to get excited about [especially for $4 a pop]. The Beet/Ricotta... not sweet enough. Maybe I'm being picky...but the glaze was very beet-y but not sweet, the filling was very cheese-y and not sweet. So, perhaps better as an appetizer than donut. Ate 1/4 of it and tossed it. The lemon was okay. Very lemon-y. Ate 1/4 of it. All in all, I wasn't really impressed with a pretty expensive purchase, there were a lot of interesting flavors, and maybe we just didn't pick the best.
