If you are FOND of FONDUE, this place is for you!!!

By Michele S |

NYC finally has an authentic cheese fondue restaurant!!! New York City is home to all sorts of ethnic and International fare, but for some reason the Swiss were misrepresented UNTIL JUST NOW! We can FINALLY experience Switzerland’s wines from the Lavaux and its crafted cheeses. My husband and I are from the Lavaux region of Swizerland and we love Swiss wines…but the Swiss love their wines as well which explains why they do not export it. How best to showcase these wonderful wines than with an authentic cheese fondue with a beautiful blend of cheeses imported directly from Switzerland. I had to own up and tell two of the three owners/creators of the Lavaux, two very ingenious, enthusiastic and hard-working young Swiss, that their fondue was the very best fondue I had ever eaten! The fact that they opened a restaurant busines in the midst of a pandemic is in itself quite a challenge …and I am glad to report that the restaurant has had a positive and enthusiastic response so far! We were so excited to visit the Lavaux, felt very anticipatory and walked to this West Village restaurant, not knowing what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by the very sleek contemporary décor. We were kindly greeted and seated indoors 8 feet away from the other tables. Le Lavaux was totally unlike the already existent Swiss restaurant in NYC which I felt was touristy, unauthentic and pretty much a tourist trap! We visited with two of the three owners who are very young and energetic and who thought of everything, from how to keep the cheese warm…(there were so many regulations that they needed to adhere to because the restaurant is housed in a very old building) to thinking of the ventilation: they installed special air filters that stop the smell of strong cheeses to permeate the clothes of the patrons. Due to the pandemic, my husband I were unable to spend the month of September in the Swiss Alps like we generally do. We thank the owners of Le Lavaux for showing us a proper cheese experience and bringing us HOME!

Excellent Fondue

Excellent Fondue. The best we've had outside of Switzerland. Good service. $120 for two. A great diner out on a cold NYC night. Nice bread for dipping. Nice wine choices. We will go back.

A horrific experience in a European restaurant

By Icegayle J |

I ordered a charcuterie board, my waiter did not tell me it was an Oder for two- when my check came I was charged for two- I called the manager who was rude, kept telling me, it states this on the menu. I said I never read the menu, because my waiter ordered for me, after explaining the charcuterie board would be a better idea! Never told me it was a serving for two! After going around and around, he finally said- if you tip my wait staff 20% I’ll only charge you for the one serving ! I said, of course! This is not customer service! My wine was $28.00 For a wine that was not rich or ful bodied! All in all- I would never go back!! It was less than enjoyable! The waitress was listening to my conversation with the manager! She then said, you probably don’t want this left over portion, and took it away! I will never go back to this restaurant!!!

Perfect melted cheese on a cold day

By TinyTawnty |

If you’re in the mood for some warm melted cheese during the cold covid winter, look no further. The Lavaux Swiss Wine & Fondue Bar is the perfect find. They have a great selection of Swiss wines, many of which are unavailable or very hard to find in stores. They have a small but decent menu selection including a raclette dish, meat and cheese charcuteries and of course 3 types of cheese fondues. Each fondue is served with unlimited portions of bread, mini potatoes, pickles and radishes. At first I thought the pickle and cheese combo would be weird but it actually grew on me after a couple bites and ended up being my favorite. We tried the Assemblage fondue which is a mix of Gruyere, Vacherin, and Val De Bagnes cheeses. It was topped with a small amount of chives. It had a savory yet tangy taste. We also ordered the meat charcuterie. The foie gras mousse was very unique and the meats were flavorful and salty. They paired well with the cheese. After awhile the cheese started to taste too salty for us so we were unable to finish it, but it was still fantastic. We would come back to try the other fondue varieties and the raclette. Only downside was the temperature with the outdoor dining. There were heaters available but they were turned very low and barely heated the small room. The restaurant offers each table blankets for extra warmth...a nice thought but one of the blankets for our table had a lot of debris on it (dirt, wood chips, little sticks). We arrived at 12:30 on a Sunday, shortly after opening...so the blanket technically should have been clean. With the concept that covid can survive on inanimate objects, it was a little off putting...cause you just never know who was using it before. But other than the blanket and cold, the food was well worth it.

A trip to Switzerland in the Big Apple

I recently went for lunch - only had salad, bread and drinks - but all were delicious. Their salad was big enough for 2 and very tasty, bread was delicious. There were a great selection of Swiss wines and their signature cocktail was delish. The restaurant is adorable. We sat at the "cable car" table which was a real treat. I know this opened up during the pandemic by 2 young Swiss guys. I wish them luck with it - something fun and different in NYC.

Satisfying Swiss Cuisine

By Tom L |

Lavaux offers satisfying Swiss cuisine. We had simplicity: a green salad with a three cheese fondue. The wine was an enjoyable Pierre Noire white. You pretty much know what to expect here. Nothing earth shattering but that is not what they are striving for. It is a very popular place. It was packed the night we were there. Lighting is very low. You may need your phone to read the menu. Our server, Jared was efficient and knowledgeable. It's a pleasant venue just don't expect to spend a whole evening here.

Swiss Delight

By IvyNYC |

This is the first I've been to an authentically Swiss restaurant. The owners, chef, et all are from Switzerland and the family owns a winery there. So the recipes and wine are all Swiss inspired and more. This is a fondue place. We went for the latest and best fondue option in town. There are other appetizers and entrees, but most options are fondue, using the finest selection of cheeses from Switzerland. Delicious! The wine flights were delightful. The whites were dry, the reds bold with any array of options. The chocolate mousse was the sole dessert, but who needed anything else. Each bite was perfection -- as good as any mousse I've ever had (I've had many!). The restaurant was recently built out and very cozy.

An experience of French-speaking Switzerland in Manhattan

By Art M |

Food, wines and spirits from French-speaking Switzerland, near Lausanne. Had charcuterie plate as appetizer, traditional fondue as main course, accompanied by delightful red (charcuterie) and white wine (fondue). Finished off with a vermouth, very smooth. Server stated that all items are imported from the Lavaux region of canton Vaud. Excellent, attentive service. Not inexpensive, but definitely worth it.

Had a wonderful time at The Lavaux Wine Bar—it’s an absolute hidden gem that brings the charm and flavor of Switzerland in the W Village. We were on our way to the meatpacking district, it was a warm November afternoon, so we stopped here for a drink and sat outside. The wine selection is truly exceptional, focused on unique Swiss varietals that are hard to find elsewhere. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, offering great recommendations and happily sharing the stories behind each wine. Who knew Switzerland had wine? 😋 The food was very good. The raclette and fondue were delicious and authentic, and the charcuterie board was beautifully presented with generous portions. Everything paired perfectly with the wines and added to the overall experience. Whether you’re a wine lover, a foodie, or just looking for a unique and cozy spot, The Lavaux Wine Bar is an absolute must-visit. I can’t wait to go back!
