Fun Place & Great for Families

By marycathyjoneslmp |

We took our kids & grandson to the Pigpen & had a great time. We sat inside because of the heat but our 5 year old enjoyed the playground outside for a while. The inside is noisy enough that little ones can run around and are not an issue. Our grandson met a few other little ones & they had a great time without bothering anyone. The brisket & pulled pork tacos are yummy. They have a great kids menu. We had a wonderful time, the adults were able to visit while keeping an eye on Charlie. It was just plain old fun & very reasonably priced. We will go back. The service was good. All personnel were extremely nice.

When you’re hangry eat here!

This establishment is mostly a bar indoor and outdoor. Outside you will find a bar picnic tables, fans, misters and a playground. We went on a super hot day but didn’t sweat much because of the setup. The have fresh water on tap self-serve. We ate the brisket grilled cheese w fries and a frozen lemonade. It was very delicious. The lemonade was not frozen so you may just want to order lemonade w/ ice. The kids playground kept the little ones busy while we waited for our food. Dogs welcome. Handicap accessible in and outdoors.

Delightful Lunch!!!

There were 8 of us, and I think we ordered every dish on the limited menu.....and everything was GREAT!!!! The trio appetizer was queso, salsa, and guacamole.....chopped brisket bits in the queso...yummy!!! I had a grilled cheese sandwich, with chopped brisket on it....wow! The salads, burgers, and nachos were all great! Delicious margaritas and beer rounded out a great lunch!

Kid friendly, loved the BBQ nachos!

We actually wanted to go to the smoke shake but it was closed but thankfully pigpen was just as good! I loved the nachos. the cheese is my favorite. The sliders were good!! We loved it all. Just a side note :: the outside has a playground if you don’t want to be around wild kids - stay clear. This didn’t bother my husband and I. But if I was single it would of 😝

Great atmosphere, but average food.

We were there today for brunch. The parking lot was full and we had to park down the street, which we took as a good sign. The brunch was $16 and $8 for a child. You pay at the bar and they give you a polystyrene plate. The food was plentiful, but not particularly well cooked. The cheesy grits and the collard greens were the biggest hit. We are from Pennsylvania and we felt we were visiting a little part of Texas; we are very pleased we had the opportunity to go to the Pigpen and would recommend it for that reason. We were also with a child who enjoyed the chance to play outside.

Amazing food and atmosphere

Located near the zoo. Great informal place to grab a delicious meal. Family friendly during the day with a nice little playground for the kids. Same owner as the smoke shack next door. A little confusing if this is your first time. You have to order at the bar and get a number. Then you sit down and they bring the food to you .......but nobody tells you that and there are no signs to indicate that. The brisket grilled cheese is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. WOW!

Downhome goodness

In town for business. Stopped in for dinner. OMG--great BBQ. We tried the brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork. The poppers were good. The mac-and-cheese is heart-stopping. The band was good and provided the right amount of background music for the meal. Service was exceptional. Parking was a little crowded but manageable.

Rude employees to tourists

This bar is owned by Smoke Shack who only had carry out right now. We had ubered. The Smoke Shack said to eat at Pigpen. So we went to Pigpen and figured we'd order some drinks so as not to just use their establishment. My husband did touch the bar to look at their variety of beer. The male server in the pink shirt really let him have it. My husband apologized and the server said something about him being carried out on a gurney.. The lady sat us and brought our drinks. We absolutely tipped her, But now no one would return for napkins or more drinks, The other guests got waters not us, And another huge table got up and left their garbage and moved to another table because of the sun. There was a sign against that but they werent condescended to. All I can think is you have to be a local.

Thumbs up

Neighborhood joint. Good spot for good inexpensive quick eats. Casual and family friendly. Came for lunch. Would visit again

Sunday brunch

By Johnnie B |

I was visiting San Antonio and wanted to find a brunch place. They have a few really nice places but well over $30. This place was only $16. I was skeptical, it’s small and looked like a hole in the wall from the pictures I saw online. It’s a family style place, so you pay and get a plastic plate and stand in line. Community seating unless you can get a table and there is plenty room. They have all your regular breakfast stuff, sausage, eggs, bacon. I don’t eat pork so I went for eggs, brisket, jalapeño grits, fried chicken strips. THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT. All tasted like home cooking. I could taste the butter in the eggs, the brisket had a good smoke ring and the grits at first caught me off guard but they were good, spicy but good. I’m not a country music fan but they had a live band, that if I’m going to be honest was pretty good. I really liked the place, I ate too much and yes listened to country music. If you like home style cooking they had other things, black eyed peas, collards with bacon, small pancakes, blueberry and peach cobbler or crumb cake. I think I ate half a brisket and I don’t know how much chicken and grits. ☺️ If I’m in San Antonio I will definitely be back.

Neighborhood Gem - for brunch or just a Wednesday night

Great neighborhood bar. Sunday brunch is the best I’ve ever had. On any non Sunday and cozy, comfortable neighborhood hangout.

Great hole in the wall

By Jonathan A |

What can you say about brisket nachos followed by a brisket grilled cheese? Ungodly awesome. While you and a friend or two share the brisket nachos you really enjoy it until you get that brisket grilled cheese and you all say "how am I going to eat that??" A good problem to have indeed. My wife likes the shrimp enchiladas while tootsie the dog loves their fajita meat.

Phenomenal barbecue and all that goes with it

By APracticalIdealist |

Since the Pigpen lists itself as a Neighborhood Bar, I wasn't sure how good the food would be until I walked into the place and smelled the amazing barbecue smell that says "gonna be great." Everything was. I got the sliders with two sides, and I was able to get one brisket and one pulled pork. Heavenly! Good smoke, extremely tender, just the right amount of burnt ends, and deliciously meaty. The meat was piled onto what seemed like homemade buttery rolls. Sauces were perfection, nothing like bottled. My potato salad was also excellent, generously laced with bacon, and the fried okra was really tasty. The sweet tea was all sweet tea should be. They offer refills on drinks but not ice, which was probably to my advantage; I could have kept drinking that tea for a long time, which would not be conducive to sleep. The setting is comfortable, like a neighborhood bar should be. This is a not-to-be-missed stop for anyone who loves barbecue.

Perfect place to unwind- and you can bring the family!

Like going to a friend's backyard for a BBQ, we enjoyed the Pigpen's relaxed family atmosphere. Late November's warm weather let us enjoy being outside after dark. Good beer selection, great food. We fell in love with the piled high brisket nachos topped with a generous scoop of guacamole. Two of us shared one plate - less than $12. Loved it so much we went BACK again! You order your food at the bar and it is brought to your table.

Great place

Dog friendly beer garden. I love the frozen Moscow mules. Good chicken salad sliders, shrimp tacos, burgers and fries, grilled brisket sandwich.

Good place for outdoor fun

The food is decent and they have a nice selection of Texas beers. Seems to be a very kid friendly spot despite lax smoking rules. Good stop for a nice day.

Birthday brunch

By Sci-Guy82 |

Chose this locate to celebrate my birthday last month (Aug). The LOML and I have been here before usually with friends, this time it was just the two of us. We knew that we would need to get there early as the smaller air conditioned portion fills quickly and Texas in August is not a place to be outside for long. The food is all on point with brisket just a touch fatty but that makes it VERY tender! The only slightly sour note for me was that the pulled pork was only around room temp and hat lost its warmth. The favorites were the surprisingly good chicken strips, fried catfish, and the meat infused Mac & Cheese. YUM 😋!!! I would like to keep the Sunday brunches here a bit of a secret, they are so good they need to be praised. We will return, hopefully when it is cooler outside and not with another year between visits.

Yummy burgers, fries & rings

By Sallyhou |

Our extended family, which included 2 kiddos under 4, enjoyed a beautiful afternoon and great kid-friendly food & atmosphere at The Pigpen. There is a small area inside, but outdoors at the picnic tables and nearby the kiddy play area is the best! Kids enjoy the slide, adults enjoy the cold beer, fresh burgers, & other offerings. We had sliders (delicious), fries - crispy, very tasty . The onion rings also look wonderful. Brother-in-law enjoyed the shrimp tacos & kiddos shared grilled cheese. Everyone went away happy!

Incredible brisket

By surelyacollectible |

Had a great meal at a small place on Pershing (off Broadway). The Brisket Nacho plate at The Pigpen is a heaping helping of home-fried corn tortilla chips, smoked chopped brisket and queso made in house, dusted with a topping of pico de gallo and guacamole. It is $11, but delish. I had a brisket soft taco for $3 and it was so good, I got another. A full bar; lotza beers, and inside & outside seating. It was hot when we were there, but fans and misters certainly helped. They also have a small area for children with swings and climbers. A wonderful evening for the whole family.

Super Great Burger at The Pigpen

By Jaggage36 |

Chris Conger is building a casual food empire with the super successful Smoke Shack (world class BBQ) and now the Pigpen. With a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, Pigpen is a laid back backyard-style hangout par excellence. We tried the burgers today and were super pleased to discover high quality meat perfectly cooked with a beautiful pinkish tinge in the middle. High quality burgers, seasoned just right and cooked just right - a rarity these days. In our book, a great burger has to be built around great beef. A truly great burger is a joy, and Pigpen has definitely made us joyful!

Fun, Casual Atmosphere with Great Music

By Anne C |

There is a sort of beer garden out back with a fenced play yard for the kiddos. Indoors is the music stage and some droll items on the wall (a buck's head smoking a cigarette, a neon sign that reads "No Music, No Life"). They serve tacos, so it's even possible to get a gluten-free meal here. Super-casual (picnic tables inside and out) and rustic, but they have a nicer wine list than you might expect. They have some really good bands playing here (my favorite is "Down for the Count"). Come early when a popular band is playing, because it gets packed about an hour before show time.

Sunday brunch

By Rebecca S |

I had wanted to go to The Smoke House, but they were closed, so I went across the parking lot to The Pigpen. They were serving Sunday Brunch buffet, and there was live music, which was really loud for such a small place. There are communal benches, and it was really crowded. The food selection was varied. I had fried fish, fried chicken, pancakes, beans, potatoes. They had other food as well: mac and cheese, cheesy grits, blueberry and peach cobbler. Orange and cranberry juice were offered with the buffet, and cocktails were offered separately. The bbq sauces were great!

Good food

By Alli P |

Have been to the Pig Pen quite often. A great place to spend a Sunday afternoon, preferably after their buffet brunch as it gets too crowded. No frozen mules on a Friday night? Was a little disappointment, not sure if they don't serve all week long or if they just didn't have the machine up and running. Otherwise always enjoy this place.

Nice Surprise

By kidflemingo |

I wasin town for work and my customer suggested that we have dinner here. Overall it was good BBQ but the menu is limited. The brisket grilled cheese was good. I would eat it again. On the nighdt we went they were having an open mic singing event. It was fun to watch people who think they can sing try to sing. I only wish I was driking so I could have enjoyed it more. I woudl go back.

Good lunch

By Bill C |

It may be unfair to rate Pigpen as a restaurant since it appears to be mostly a neighborhood bar. Nevertheless, we were there for lunch. The atmosphere is very casual Texas roadhouse style with long picnic tables, a full bar, and a stage for live bands inside and a large tree covered beer garden with another bar outside. The food menu is somewhat limited and served from a food truck. The tacos and burger were generous, and the onion rings were quite good. Go here for the bar atmosphere and live entertainment. The food menu is more of a bar supplement.

Happy hour stop

By Jessica Y |

Place has decent food with a relaxed atmosphere for drinks and to hang out. We had tacos and wings, both of which were mediocre and a little heavy. Convenient place to stop for a bite while visiting the area.

Good food, chill atmosphere

By BucktheEagle |

Anything with the brisket in or on it is good. Decent prices, simple menu, laid back atmosphere. They needed another bartender but otherwise good experience.

Great atmosphere: great food

By Lorib1062 |

Loved the cheeseburger sliders and wings, but the outside ambience is the big winner! Casual come as you are, kids playing nearby. All types of people.

Nice, friendly place

By dbalc |

Went for a going away party they had ab out 25 people there. Happy hour priced Shiner was $2.25. LArge selection of draft pints in the $5-7 range. Some table games that made it fun to have a few beers in a nice atmosphere with football on the TVs.

Look forward to our next visit...

First stop on our way to our daughter's home after flying in to SAT. Beautiful day and this outdoor venue was a perfect end to a long day. Hubs and I each got the grilled brisket & cheese; his with fries and mine with rings...it was so filling, we should have shared one and perhaps ordered a side of rings. We were also enticed to visit their indoor place next door and get their mac & cheese which has bits of sausage & brisket. Good suggestion. We also enjoyed watching our 7-year-old grandson play in their play yard while we sipped some brew and visited.

Food truck Deliciousness

By juliebfromindy |

We had spent the morning at the zoo and went looking for BBQ. We found this local treasure. Location has a huge outdoor seating area, close parking, clean bathrooms and is handicap accessible. When you walk in place your order at bar then they will give you a number. Take number back to seat and just wait. Food come out as it is done. Nacho were first and they were massive. Layered with cheese and brisket they quickly became a party in our mouths. Next was the 3 dip platter, this is where we realized we ordered too much food. Salsa has a kick to it, brisket cheese dip delicious and the guacamole was very tasty. Finally the hamburger with onion rings arrived. Beautiful seasoned beef burger cooked just how we like them (med rare) that tasted wonderful. Wait staff was nice just not very attentive. It was an easy walk to bar for refills but still a walk. Bathrooms were very clean which was nice to see. You can take children and dogs to this location but only till 9 pm. There is no kitchen at this location only a food truck so check hours if you are hungry before you go.

Great hangout

I stopped by for a drink on my way to the Japanese Tea Garden and returned for drinks and dinner. There are lots of craft beers and delicious food. I had the brisket nachos. Wonderful service and great vibe! Don't pass this neighborhood joint up.

Sunday Brunch

By hotweatherfan1 |

We had really looked forward to eating at the Sunday Brunch. Upon arrival there was no direction as to whether to seat yourself or ? There was an employee near the door emptying the trash that looked at us and completely ignored us. We sat down. Several employees went by and said nothing. We waited a bit and then asked another customer how they got their plate. We were directed to the bar to pay. We paid and were given a plate. Everyone seemed to be using one plate for their entire meal. The food items had mixed reviews. Nothing was labeled. The mac and cheese was cold. My husband was really looking forward to his favorite BBQ item, pulled pork, but he was really disappointed in it. It was mostly fat. The brisket and catfish were very good. The dessert items, peach cobbler and banana pudding, were also very good. The gentleman at the omelet station walked over and offered us to cupfuls of cut up watermelon which was also good.

Great yard bar near Brackenridge and the Witte. Watch out for smokers.

By callmaniac |

Fantastic neighborhood bar. Had to deduct a star because they allow smoking at the bar so watch where you sit. The food is prepared by a food truck that's out back and is inexpensive and good. Lots of local tap beers and a full bar. 2 TV's and normally there are sports on. They need a smoking section where all the cool Marlborough men and women can hang out together.

Enjoyed it

By 78209Hungry_Dad |

We enjoyed our time at the Pig Pen. There’s a full bar. Drinks aren’t cheap, but the Pen offers a good selection of spirits and the bartenders did NOT short us. One of the joint’s best features is its fenced (outside) play area, ideal (IMHO) for kiddos aged 3-7. It irks me when lazy parents allow rambunctious 11-12 year olds to run wild on playground equipment. In their adolescent exuberance, spirited pre-teens often bump into 3-5 year olds, knocking the little ones off balance, leading to many scrapes and bruises. Of course, this is not something for which I blame the establishment. On the occasion of our visit, a live band played inside. I enjoyed their choice of music and their performance. Sadly, the speaker volume was cranked up so loud that I could not long endure it. I am quite aware that “if it’s too loud, [I’m] too old.” I can admit: Now that I’m on the ugly side of 40, I am too old for arena rock concerts, whose speakers and amps tower into the sky. Nevertheless, having glanced about, I suspect most Pig Pen customers are grown-ups who’d prefer rocking out at a somewhat lower volume. I was surprised to learn that the Pig Pen does not serve the same scrumptious BBQ as is served next door at the Smoke Shack. I’d thought these two neighboring enterprises shared ownership. Apparently that is not so, although explanation I received (of their nexus) was frustratingly ambiguous. Parking is scarce, which is a problem for customer but also a testament to these businesses’ popularity. Sadly, one does not often find great nightspots with empty park lots. Something about supply and demand… I will say that our bartenderess (inside) was not in the greatest of all hurries to serve us; she seemed preoccupied with her affaires de coeur. Yet, when it was out turn, she took the time to prepare our drinks properly. For that, I am grateful.
