"Total disappointment" are the words I have to use to talk about this old restaurant in the heart of the West Village in NYC. I went there the other night for diner after 24 years. The last time I had been there was for a surprise birthday party for me. Both the restaurant and I have been through many changes since then! The atmosphere was the same even though there had been many physical changes made to the place. One was the steep increase in the cost of the food. That was to be expected. What was not expected was the poor quality of the food. What was served was definitely overpriced and poorly prepared. In addition, the service was exceptionally poor. There were times when I felt our waiter forgot about us and the restaurant was NOT overly crowded at the time. There are many other restaurants in the West Village and this is one I will definitely not return to for another 24 years!

We were greeted by two men sitting at the front of the restaurant with eyerolls, strange. Turns out one of the men was the in house sommelier. We were seated in the terrace which was truly beautiful. Our server was outstanding, tentative without being over the top. While looking at the wine list we overheard said sommelier snapping commands at the waitstaff- including don't waste my time with people looking at the first page of the wine list as they're only by the glass- heaven forbid you help someone pick out a single glass of wine! While eating it was a little uncomfortable because we had 4 staff members standing up hovering over our table, we didn't feel we could have a private conversation. I had the salmon, which was undercooked and lacked flavour, my partner had the chicken pot pie which was fabulous! We shared a chocolate cake for dessert which was a bit of a large portion, however delicious- came with olive oil ice cream, to die for!! We won't be giving this place a second chance, how could you when there are so many amazing restaurants in the city who have kind informative approachable wait staff.

This is a beautiful restaurant—low ceilings, intimate (but not crowded) tables, murals on the walls, and a garden open in summer and covered in winter. The food is fine, but nothing special: straightforward fish and meat. And it is expensive.

Bad service, filthy restroom, below average food. The antipathy of staff was overwhelming. The waitress was extremely rude, nearly as revolting as the host. Upon waiting for our table, no amenities nor drinks were offered.

Step down into a cozy bar built in1920. The restaurant's architecture stems back to an earlier time of 1844, when the average height is placed at 5'7". Bar with stools next to fire place or small tables, main dining room, four tables connected to the main dining room, but in their own zone with curved banquette or dine in the back garden under the skylight... or outside. Quality on every level of food - not gastro brilliant, but comfort food oriented. Modest wine list incorporates all the best, bar tender is in the know and wait staff efficient, friendly know when not to be chatty. The place has great energy.

It's a must - if you wanna feel nyc atmosphere. Kind of hard to get in if haven't done the reservation. Take a walk in the neighborhood also

On a rainy Sunday this spring my husband and I returned to the site of our Wedding dinner 40 years ago. After marrying in the afternoon we took our family out to the Ye Olde Waverly Inn in 1976 and dined on their Duck and Chicken Pot Pie. It was, even then, a Village Classic. We had eaten there a number of times since but never under the new management led by Graydon Carter. We had heard that it became more a place to be seen then to eat so we stayed away. But, nostalgia won out so... The space was renovated beautifully and the enclosed garden is still a standout. The main dining room was bustling and busy for a Sunday night but not overloud. We sat in the garden which was a quieter place that evening. Maybe the rain canceled a few reservations. But we were surprised and impressed that even at 9 pm on a rainy Sunday night business was brisk. We were told by our server that two of the fish dishes were unavailable that night. Disappointing but as we were not looking for fish of no consequence. Also informed, that their Signature Mac and Cheese was on the menu as a side so we ordered it to split as an appetizer. It is excellent and a must have particularly if you bring children. But, a word of caution it is large and filling, we brought half of it home. I ordered their version of the classic Chicken Pot Pie and my husband ordered their Brick Chicken. Both dishes were delicious. The Chicken Pot Pie was a great take on the original. We also had a side of Sautéed Spinach. We gave up wine for cocktails, an Aperol Spritzer and Waverly Lemonade. If you are a fan of Gin drinks, as I am, then the lemonade is for you. It is refreshing with a hint of heat. Finally, they had a Red Velvet Cake that we both enjoyed with cappuccino. I wish I could remember the name of our server as he was great, attentive but unobtrusive and appeared to enjoy answering our menu questions. I hope not to wait too long to return. It's still a wonderful place to eat.

I recently returned here again after many years. I had dined here several times before and always enjoyed the quaint setting. Unfortunately, the service was a bit unfriendly, but the steak made up for it. I'd consider visiting again to see if the service improves.

Had brunch at this place in the conservatory area at the back. The menu was fairly typical New York brunch fare but was none the worse for that. The staff were attentive without being over the top. It wasn't cheap but it was overall a good brunch, I had the Crab Eggs Benedict - it was perfectly cooked and well presented.

Top notch food and ambience. Chicken Pot Pie is awesome. Expensive but worth it. Be aware there is no corkage allowed.

After seeing that Donald Trump named this restaurant the worst in NY, I knew that I would likely love it. He lies about everything. Why would this be any different? Food was wonderful, and staff were all friendly and helpful. I had the chicken pot pie, which was perfect for this cold, rainy evening. The roll with honey butter that came prior to my dinner was warm and delicious. I ended the meal with what I can only describe as the best bananas foster I have ever had. Donald was wrong yet again! Great job, Waverly Inn!

Five of us went for New Years Even early evening dinner and left before midnight to go home and wait for the New Year. It had been a long time since I'd been there. We went because it was one of the few places that didn't' force a prix fix on you. It's an interesting place because it is truly lovely, cosy, historic, the staff was very accommodating and quite nice. The food was good, solid just all around good but I couldn't tell you what I ate, nothing sticks out where you say I'm coming back to have this or that dish. That being said I would go back for something special, out of town guests etc. I feel the exact same way about One if by Land.

The decor in this village restaurant is nice and cozy. The place was full and the food was excellent. We had the sea bass which was well cooked and combined. All our dishes were great!

Literally been trying to get into this restaurant for a few years. It is known for where the stars eat, but I can tell you I was not the least bit impressed. Ordered their "famous" chicken pot pie and Stouffers is better. Service was ok, but the prices for what you get, is not worth it! They had truffle mac and cheese that was not a large serving by any form that was $165!! Choose another place to enjoy a great meal, there are tons of local dives that are a million times better.

Warm and comfortable space where I have been coming for years….but now the food has slipped and the service inattentive. Very disappointing….high expectations met with mediocre at best food and dismal service except for the bar….. Don’t expect me to pay more and get less…time for a real inspection of food quality, service training, and more customer feedback. Regulars are too polite about a rapidly deteriorating experience……please be great again

The first time I went here, I was found the ambience cozy and novel. So, the food seemed better than it actually was. The second time after its charm had worn off, I realized the food here kinda sucks. Miniscule hamachi tartare is drowned in... soy sauce! Imagine that! The ahi tuna was bland, nothing special. Bananas foster isn't worth the wait. The biscuits are good though. And our server was very nice. But this place rests on its laurels.

What should you call a bunch of pretentious plonkers? ... after stumbling on this cute well hidden place we popped in for a couple of nightcaps after dining elsewhere , we were greeted by a surly front of house who was very standoffish . We sat at a table at the bar and the barman was quite condescending and rude . Taking a selfie to record our night we were scolded in no uncertain terms that photos were not allowed .. What ???? Get a dog up ya !!!! It’s a bar ya flogs , for privacy of other guests you say ??? Pull your heads in and get a grip please .. I note the restaurant is Michelin quality sadly this must have gone to your collective swollen heads and egos . In answer to the original question maybe the collective term should be Waverly

I stopped here for a drink, and it was dark and cozy and relaxed. The menu looked good, but I just wanted a little snack and every dish seemed elaborate (but creative). The service was good, and we managed to find a seat at a table in the bar area. Nice experience!

One of the best meals I have ever had. I sat there thinking, "this meal is costing me a bundle" but I didn't care, it was that good. Had Brussel Sprouts as a side, I hate Brussel Sprouts but these were excellent, they must have sauteed them in unicorn butter. Cannot recommend this place highly enougn

We had requested a specific table and was bounced at the last minute because the owner wanted to use the table. okay. we ordered a few of the specials and they were much more expensive than the other dishes on the menu. our fault, we should have asked. but did not expect $85 macaroni and cheeses, we ordered three as sides dishes. our own fault. but they weren't very good, neither was the special soft shell crabs or the lamb chops. service was good. but we felt ripped off for $1200 for seven people.

Overall it was a decent experience... it could have been better but the factors that affected the experience were not 100% the restaurants fault; so I will rate at very good instead of average. Before I start I will mention the one thing that I thought was perfect. They do not allow photographs inside the restaurant. While some people in my party hemmed and hawed about it, I think it is fantastic! They were quick to ensure that this rule was followed which I highly appreciated (people need to stop taking pictures and enjoy their meal and company). At the end of the meal, when the area surrounding our party was empty, they did let a few pictures slide which was very nice of them. But anyway, let's discuss the experience. We were a large group (14 total) arrived for our reservation and were seated promptly. They got us set up with menus and took our drink order; we received our drinks very quickly. Actually, we received our drinks before the bread was even put on the table.. and that is when I realized it. Our server, while pleasantly high handed and politely curt was not particularly pleased with having such a large group in his section and was not the most welcoming. I will commend the server for being very organized when taking our orders.. let's be honest, taking a food order for a large party is like herding stray cats. He did a commendable job of taking all the orders in an efficient manner. However, he didn't particularly engage the group; there were no specials mentioned or recommendations made regarding the food. The one interaction that stood out was with the member in my party that was sitting directly across from me. She was ordering the lamb; she asked if the truffle mentioned in the menu description was actual shaved truffle or truffle oil. The tone of the response was curt (it is actual truffle, we do not utilize truffle oil); the follow up had a little more of a condescending tone (we only cook the lamb to medium rare). She indicated that she was fine with it... the problem? The lamb came out medium to the table. The food, other than the overcooked lamb, was good. I had the cod and was very happy with my choice. One person in the party ordered dessert. She had the rum cake (can't remember the exact name)... it was pedestrian. And not something to rave about... In my humble opinion it tasted like a Betty Crocker pineapple upside down cake that had been soaked with rum... I was expecting something more interesting and exciting. We did give our server one more headache at the end of the meal as the check was split between multiple cards (which was really annoying and we could have planned that better). The server was visible relieved to have us leave. So the review is less than stellar, why did I still rate the restaurant as very good instead of lower? Well, (a) it was a large group that should have either been split into two smaller groups or declined from the get go, (b) the server did do a good job of maintaining order and being very organized, and (c) the food was good. If I was back in NYC I would return and I feel that it would be very enjoyable.

I am not a mac & cheese lover; however, the mac & cheese with truffles at the Waverly Inn is to die for. Par it with the 2005 Chateau Musar and our main course makes for an eating experience you will not soon forget. I highly recommend dining here, but bring extra as it is pricey.

Arrived at 8.25 for an 8.30 booking. Stood in the bar for over an hour waiting for a table. Grossly overpriced drinks and knew this would not end well. When we eventually got a table, the waiter brought menus and offered the days special....mac'n'cheese with shavings of truffle for $175. Surely someone is taking the piss. Won't hurry back unless I win the lottery.

Am I dreaming? I read the reviews and I feel that I was in the wrong restaurant, we were there at 6 PM exactly our reservation time. We had a good car service that delivered us on time. We were seated in the inside room towards the end. If there was a fire, we would be dead, I could not even get out of my seat without asking the lady on the next table to get up so that I could pass. Our food was so bad the dry aged beef was so over cooked when we asked for medium rare, we tasted charcoal. We ordered two crab cakes, were like small meat balls but could not taste the crab, full of fillers. The wine was chosen by our host and it was $100 plus, we did not drink it. The bill was closed to $$$$, the final insult was at 8:30, we have not even signed the check yet, we were told to get up so that they can reuse the table. It was so loud that when we left the restaurant to get into our car service, we asked our driver to not play the radio, it was a very painful evening. I am really wondering where these nice reviews came from.

PROS Atmosphere and place are unique to spend a night in the West Village Food is good and there is a pretty good cocktail list Price is aligned CONS Service might speed up a bit

The service was a disaster. We have been placed close to the plastic window where we have been frozen immediately. Our table was so closed to the other table that both the chair of my neighbour and mine could not move unless one of each stood up. The 2 tables around us did not dare to complain but they had cold as well. We did and we have been changed our table to the center of the room. There was a fan on the ceiling aimed on us. My wife and I asked your people if it was possible to stop it and they said no ! What a poor service, what a strange way to take care of people.... Last but not least when we left we told a small guy (wanting to prove he was the big chief) that we spent a very bad evening so cold it was and so bad was the service and he answered that he did not care ... he said we were wrong...

We were a party of four seated in a half round banquet which was very nice. No one could trip over our chairs. Much better than some people that were seating on tables in the middle of the floor. We had made a reservation a long time in advance, but we still had to wait forty five minutes before being seated. By that time my appetite had gone way down. I do not know why it is so difficult to make a reservation (it has to be made long time in advance). Nothing special here except the setting which is beautiful. But because they try to seat as many people as they can, the noise level is very high and it is very difficult to have a conversation. The lighting is very low which does not allow you to read the menu without help from your smartphone. The menu listing is limited. The food was good, my portion was small. I had a piece of fish with three overcooked asparagus. The service was ok. The price is on the high side. May be come for an early dinner the next time.

Having visited this establishment previously with a notable local, known to the restaurant I wanted to return with my wife to repeat the experience. Little did I know that the first experience was predicated on visiting with 'known' customer/celeb. Visiting for the second time alone, we were condescended to at every opportunity. The lead waiter was abrupt and clearly thought the only way to retain his position was to address customers with little more than contempt. Five minutes into our meal, a table of loud, obnoxious and utterly pretentious people were seated behind us. So close were they seated that every squeal, excited clapping and overly projected shriek of laughter pieced our conversation to the core. When they then began what was to be a catalogue of loud complaints throughout the evening - the wine, the food, everything - we were obliged to listen to every syllable of their broken English. The worst of it was the waiter (who was totally indifferent to our presence), in the face of loud complaints issued with a French accent became weak at the knees, and desperately tried to appease, apologise, offer gifts etc... The whole exercise was deeply unsettling - (s)he who shouts loudest!! Many of the staff knocked off before we had finished (perhaps unable to bear the complaints) and were seated in the street outside having a sly cigarette as we left, disappointed. The meal was well prepared by a competent chef. The experience was a disaster.

Visited here on a beautiful Saturday, arrived at noon. We made reservations but not needed early in the day. We were able to sit outside in front. I think this place gets busy later in the day. It is located in a quiet neighborhood, enjoyable on a nice day to watch locals walk by. Service in the first 10 minutes was a bit mixed up (took drink orders but no menus provided), but then Nate took over and did an awesome job -- kept coming frequently to check on us and the others outside. I was skeptical of brunch because I didn't see much of a menu on-line and this seems more like a dinner place. But the food was amazing! The scone is a must-have, even if you don't usually eat carbs. It was moist and tasty, unlike any other scone I've had. The blueberry jam served with it was just ok but that didn't detract. I ordered the crab and eggs, which were really tasty. A bit pricy but there was a lot of crab mixed in. The eggs just melted in my mouth. The side green salad I ordered was a bit plain, just green lettuce with little or no flavor/dressing but it was fresh. My Bloody Mary was very spicy and strong, while the mimosa was flavored with a bit of Grand Marnier (ask for without if you don't like the orange flavor). Definitely will return for brunch, and sometime to test out the dinner menu.

Great cosy venu and great food and prices not too bad at all. A great find for us in west village. We had brunch on a Saturday but would be keen to back for dinner

This is in my immediate neighborhood but I hadn't been in a while so when a friend came to visit, we came here for Brunch. The outside garden was full - including a large party but the inside tables were empty save for one. We were seated immediately adjacent to the only other occupied table while every other table within sight was empty. Brunch offerings are pretty typical and typically priced (i.e. $17 for a short stack) I ordered the roasted beet salad with goat cheese and carmelized pecans for $22. It was a joke. Overcooked, washed-out looking cut-up beets, approximately 1 cup of some sort of tasteless, wispy green, 1 tablespoon of crumbled goat cheese and the equivilent of 1/2 a chopped pecan. Everything drowned in a too-harsh vinegarette. I did eat it because I was hungry and there was little else on the menu that appealed to me but I can't say I enjoyed it. My friend ordered the Eggs Benedict ($23) which she thought were very good but the side of home fries was so undercooked it was not edible. The waiter ignored us (and the table next to us) until he delivered our checks. To his credit though, when told the potatoes were undercooked (and uneaten) he took the entire entree off our bill. We didn't ask for that and were very much surprized given the indifference shown throughout the meal. The Garden is lovely in the warm weather and in colder months the bar would be a nice cozy place for a drink but the food was a big disappointment.

It looks great and has all the credentials, but don't the staff there know it. Don't bother emailing for a reservation, you're not going to get a reply unless they think you're in their class. You almost certainly are and probably have better manners. Food was ok if not expensive for what it was. Barman was particularly rude - actually left me reeling with his arrogance, but he did make a decent Bloody Mary, well at least the second one was. Do go to the toilet before though, people who can afford to eat the food, wont be able to squeeze through the toilet door - the ladies that is. We all had to try just to have a laugh - if you're disabled in anyway you're going to have a tough time in there. Glad I went, glad it's not my local so I don't have to pretend and pay their very 'overpriced was probably good once' service. the murals are gorgeous though, being rude to your customers though is so 1990's - get over yourselves.

From its impossible-to-get-in hay day 'til today's one could go in anytime, there's a reason. In a nut shell, the only thing here that is worth to visit is the historic site and the story behind it. As usual, today's service was also slow. The pancake dish came out rather dry, so we asked for more syrup. We waited and waited, it finally came with a small dish which has less then 10cc of maple syrup in it... so we requested another one and it took forever to come. In fact, we had to ask 4 different waiters in order to receive the 2nd small dish of syrup. When we asked for check, it took another 10 minutes for no answer. So we asked anther server for check, then our server got sent to us and ask what else do we want... it seemed to us that the servers here don't talk to each other or helping each other, but it also did not appeal to us that it's based on individual station responsibility. It's a mess. Before we left, we asked to speak to the manager and figured the managerial staff would appreciate our honest feedback. Unfortunately, this particular manager (morning shift on May 21st, 2016) all he did was to speak softly but defending the team..., no wonder the service is sloppy if this is how a manager's reaction when customers have something to say. It is a real shame ... Luckily there are so many restaurant options in the city. We definitely are not going back and so do our friends... Don't waste your money and time.

There were three of us for brunch. We had been before, but this time the food was not so great. Our friend said the burger was great, I had the arugula beet salad and I could not believe how small it was for $21. Must have just been a handful of arugula, which is totally ridiculous for a restaurant of this standing. The eggs Benedict was lukewarm. Service was nice, but they need to really upscale the food and portions.

This restaurant exudes the character and ambiance of the New York institution that it is. Dark wood everywhere and the fireplaces made this a special retreat from everyday New York. The front door says "speakeasy" and is a good indication of what is inside. I had some delicious French toast and my wife said her omelet was very tasty. Our server was very attentive and we never lacked for anything. Some of the walls are covered with murals of famous ex-Greenwich Villagers and guessing their names was a fun project.

Don't go here expecting the best food in the world and you will leave happy. The Ambiance and service is why people go here. This is a charming old style restaurant with dark woods and soft lighting, and cozy atmosphere. The FOOD is good, not great. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and loved the vibe of the place. Our waiter was fantastic and the Sommelier made great wine choices for us. We also had the chance to say Hi to Julianne Moore and marvel at the Bitcoin Billionaires the Winklevoss Twins seated nearby. Wonderful place for an impressive Date night, great atmosphere, great service, and good food. Don't go looking for a wonderful Michelin Star Chef, and enjoy the incredible charm of this lovely place. THAT is what you are paying for and it is worth every penny. Please vote helpful below

This is a special Resto. The paintings on wood, small details here and there, esoteric tap water bottles; everything here is part of the experience. Food was absolutely excellent. Wine list the same. Service impeccable. Worth the money.

Ambience was great very cosy with a hip atmosphere. Would have been 5 stars but the amish chicken isn't what it used to be, however the chicken pot pie was good.

This super cute small restaurant put up with our large group of 20+ and the service plus food was AMAZING! I had never been before, but will go back again for sure with a smaller group. The steak was good plus the vegetarian meal and salmon all to die for!!

The menu bragged that Trump said it was the worst place to eat in the City. This may be good marketing but Trump may also have been right. The meal was extremely overpriced and tasteless. The host was the usual pretentious obnoxious type. The wait re was good but it didn’t make up for feeling stupid at being ripped off. It’s obviously making a lot of money for someone and they’re most likely living somewhere else.

We had a wonderful dinner at The Waverly this evening, everything was perfect. Perfect, attentive service. Excellent food and wine. Extremely professional and helpful staff. We highly recommend this special restaurant.

The restaurant (and bar) is very nice. It's difficult to see it from outside so go with someone who has allready been or with a gps. Inside,it's like going back in time, old style and classy people. To start, waiting for our table (that wasn't free for the hour we asked for), we got some very nice biers from the long list of biers they have. Food is good, classic american cuisine but with a touch of history in it. If you're willing to spend a lot, you can chose from a very long list of wines, otherwise go on with biers. Service was good during the dinner, but for payment they did some errors putting in my card all the check of another table, that wasn't so good.

If you like chicken pot pie, this is the place to go. Very atmospheric; tables close together, and low key lighting. Excellent wine list, and knowledgeable wait staff. Very popular at weekends, so reservations a must. Certainly worth seeking out, as much for the atmosphere as the food, which is good, but hardly ground-breaking.

Sunday Brunch was not mindblowing by any stretch of the imagination. It was standard bistro-type food. Yummy and satisfying. However the service is very lackadaisical. We had to ask for a water glass, they never refilled water bottles, we had to ask to order...it was almost self-serve.

We were seated in an enclosed terrace. There was a big fireplace in the middle. The atmosphere was cozy. Guests were dressed casually. The servers were pleasant though I heard that this is a popular place. The sommelier did her best to help us pick wines. The biscuits that they served as bread were delicious. My son liked his lamb. I was happy with my asparagus with hollandaise sauce and chicken pot pie. Food was generally flavorful and a high quality.

went to this amazing place last sunday for brunch.....what food!!! what service !! what atmosphere!!! the people there are great.....maybe the reason the place was so packed is because there is a new executive chef in charge.....cant wait to go back!!!!

We went there for a dinner. Very busy place, classic restaurant, atmosphere of New York. We had burgers that were organic and delicious. Quality was worth the price. It was not very expensive either. The only thing is that it’s extremely noisy but we are in NY :)

So first impressions of the Waverley were great, cute, secluded with tons of atmosphere. Our waiter was fab and great fun so we had high hopes. The sommelier was however a bit pretentious and when I innocently went to take a pic of the grand cats on the fire place he shouted across the table that no photos were allowed. This could of been done discreetly. He only cheered up when my friend ordered there most expensive champagne. The food was not great and hugely over priced. My chicken pie was average at best and myself and 2 of my friends all had bad stomachs after. I've had better food at my local in England. The waiter made the evening but I wouldn't return or recommend it.

We enjoyed dinner here late last summer, and both remembered how nice it was to sit outside on a relatively cool evening -- great service and delicious food. I know that a famous New Yorker considers this the worst food in New York; we both wondered about that reaction -- the food sure tasted good to us. We certainly will be back.

A quiet Waverly Inn dinner with my son on a lovely NY winter night --- what a perfect mix. Place is so cozy, the food always to look forward to, staff so friendly and accommodating. The Waverly Burger is a must try, of course with fries. Their chicken pot pie is also a classic. Make visiting a tradition.

The service was very mid. I had told them it was my birthday when I’d booked and they didn’t even say happy birthday. It was 3 Jan and they didn’t say happy new year. Very different to the rest of New York where places have been so nice and chatty and we’ve been able to tell them that we’re celebrating our new engagement. The burger was very fantastic. However the vegetarian selection has a lot to be desired. Don’t get the beetroot salad as a main. There’s so much beetroot. The restaurant was really pretty.

The food is great but the service is regular/bad. The place is nice and cozy, we enjoyed it. For the prices there should be a better service

As the title suggests, wonderful evening with colleagues and friends. Would highly recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

The Waverly Inn and Garden is extremely pricey and service can feel a little stuffy but food is excellent. We went early on a Saturday evening and as the night went on, the bar and restaurant really filled up creating a busy and buzzy atmosphere - if you can afford it, definitely make a night of it here!

Dined at Waverly Inn as guests of a native New Yorker.. Our hostess lives in the neighborhood. Apparently this is a very well loved place by locals. The restaurant is charming. Cozy. Cramped. Clubby. Several small rooms and a lovely garden room. We sat in a walk through room with banquettes at either side. That’s a good place to request for a quieter, more private seating. Service is excellent Sommelier is knowledgable and unpretentious. Not one of those pompous guys with the chain around his neck. He suggested a white Bourdeaux for me that was delightful. But - to the food. Oysters were from three different areas and delicious. Briny. Cold. The truffled MAC and Cheese was presented with gusto. Truffles shaved on the top with much fanfare. But the dish itself was bland and mushy. My chicken pot pie was dry- no sign of the veloute sauce and I’m not sure what part if the chicken was used. From where I come from- chicken pot pies are a delicious blend of flaky crust, chunks of recognizable chicken, a nutmeg or tarragon infused sauce that flows out as you break into the top crust, steam rising from the pie. This one was over cooked, dry and bland. My companions Amish chicken with gnocchi was also lackluster. Dry. No glaze or sauce. Not a moist roasted chicken. Actually, looked more like part of a game hen. The gnocchi was totally dry. The bitter green were dry and stemmy, Famous 48.00. hamburger. Do not bother. There’s lots of places in the city that serve excellent burgers. This was flavorless and lackluster. Highly touted fries? Fine but nothing exceptional. There were several pop personalities in the restaurant. That was fun to act nonchalant and “hip”. This was a lively spot. Maybe a bad night. But had I been paying for dinner that night, the $900.00 tab would have been a little hard to swallow.

Over priced but obviously a place to be seen at!!!! We chose American food being overseas visitors! Good burger. Speciality is a different pie daily so we chose the 'Pie of the day' it was good but pricey and nothing special. We were disappointed as we had been recommended by a local.

We went during one of the long weekends so there were no people at the restaurant, it was hard to judge the atmosphere. The food was great. We had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Also the wait staff was friendly, educated on the food and gave a great impression. Would recommend to anyone who wants to experience the true West Village feel in a restaurant.

This was our third visit to Waverley and it never fails to impress. A courteous welcome and prompt service., the setting is delightful. The brunch was excellent and we’re keen to return again soon.

Sit outside for a delightful brunch on a tree lined West Village street. The omelettes and French toast were great and the scone with jam and cream was remarkable. Expensive but worth it.

The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English restaurant in the countryside. It was fully booked and therefore the noise level was correspondingly high. The service was very attentive and friendly. The Caesar salad was very lush and delicious, as was the salmon afterwards. The premium burger was rather average. It is a very trendy restaurant, which is also mentioned in magazines, and for New York it is an experience. Since it is always well attended, a conversation can be exhausting due to the conversation noises of the neighbouring tables.

Went for dinner with very high expectations - I had the mahi mahi and my daughter had the risotto - both tasted fantastic. Unfortunately the service was well below par for what I would expect at any restaurant let alone one with the prices this one charged. Our waiter had only 2 tables with our one being his only table initially and we found ourselves waiting to place our order, waiting to have our wine refilled and then when I realised at the end of our meal that other tables had lovely warm bread I had to ask for that as well. Not good enough ! Although the meal was great I wouldnt go back for the poor service alone.

Have been here many times with locals and always was treated wonderfully. Went with five tourist friends who were visiting New York and I was, sad to say, embarrassed at how they were treated with mild contempt by the waitress. For example, if they stumbled over the pronunciation of a menu item, she corrected them firmly and quite unnecessarily.

The food is ok but nothing to shout about the bread is the best thing that’s not on the menu. If the seating wasn’t so cramped it would get more stars from me but they sit you so close to other people I found myself touching arms while eating. Won’t go back again because of this.

I had dinner here with friends and the food, drinks and decor were all superb! I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I will definitely visit here again.

Went to the Waverly Inn for dinner. Host was great (as usual) and allowed us to choose between a table inside, outside or in the garden. We chose the garden. The waiting staff was knowledgeable and helpful. We had the steak and the scallops as main dishes. Both were very good, and perfectly cooked. The best of the dinner for us was the sommelier's advice on wine. We wanted a good red with a mid body, not outrageously expensive. She delivered. We ended up getting an uncommon burgundy (after changing our mind ) it was perfect. The place is a must-do in the West Village, it is classy, has a retro feel, and is as good for dinner, brunch or lunch in summer or in winter (nice fire places).

the food was unbelievable. the salad was one of the best i have had. I could eat the lamb chops again and again. It was so good. the olive oil gelato was interesting

Awesome brunch sitting out on the front patio. Really relaxed and low key spot to laze around on a Sunday afternoon, watching people go by. The farro bowl with poached eggs and kale was super satisfying. Thanks for a great time!

Went on 1/4/18, the SNOW DAY in NYC. Had no intention of going there, but it was close to where we were staying, so we were able to walk there. PERFECT for that type of day, excellent bar with a great bartender, and good comfort food. Nothing spectacular, but all very good. I had the chicken pot pie which is a great dish for a cold snowy day. The only thing missing was a roaring fire. Love the Trump quote on the menu, and ultimately have to disagree with him. Now go just to read the quote!!

A wonderful surprise from the moment you enter the front door. Very trendy and extremely busy in the bar area, easy to see why. Dining was a delight, not a big menu but one that had familiar meals on it. The duck was a delight. The decor had a very English Country manor house to it. I believe it is very difficult to make a reservation.

We had a wonderful time here. The host & server were great. We requested an indoor table & we seated at a cozy table next to the roaring fire with views of the murals. Food was excellent- foie gras special & burrata apps, mushroom risotto & their classic chicken pot pie, chocolate pots de creme for dessert. Cocktails & wine great too. Not cheap, but an excellent overall experience. Will definitely be back.

Everytime I go to Waverly Inn I wonder why I dont go there more often. It really is a low ceilings warm experience with a fire burning in the winter and lowly lit. Always fun to go to and the burger is awesome!

We came based on good recommendations; it was too warm to sit outside, too dark to sit in the front room, but the back room with it's high glass ceiling was good. The food was interesting, modest portions, nice variety on the menu. The seating was close, but not a big problem. We were going to start with appetizers while we enjoyed the evening and select our entrees ...... until our waiter quite sharply informed us that the chef wants the full order to be put in at the same time. He meant excluding dessert. Regardless, the rule may benefit the kitchen, but was restrictive for us. And the delivery of the message was mood-stopping. Why go back?

Great atmosphere in the restaurant set in several rooms on Bank Street. Try to book a table in the garden room if you can which has a fireplace and a high glass ceiling. The menu well chosen including US staples like Chicken Pot Pie to roast wild Alaskan salmon for those wanting something more healthy. It is not a cheap place to eat and the wine list in particular has few options under $70 but the atmosphere is great, the service excellent and we have a very good evening with friends.

We made a reservation for Sunday Mother’s Day Brunch. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. It was cold and rainy outside but great in the Garden. The fireplace was on and it was very comfortable. We started with Bellinis while we reviewed the brunch menu. We stayed with the tradibrunch food and all were excellent. The waffle with grilled banana and caramel souse were to die for. It was like eating dessert for breakfast. What a treat! The service was excellent. All things considered - a great time, food, ambiance, and service.

Mostly excellent food (crabcakes, steak tartare, hamachi ceviche) with the prices to match. Appetisers and mains truly delicious. Deserts fine but nothing to shout about. The room was warm - and full of character. One of our sides was delayed and they comped the deserts which was very generous. Lovely way to spend evening with colleagues while in NYC.

This is a lovely restaurant in a beautiful street in the West Village. It is cosy with lovely booth seating, good service and very good menu, bordering on comfort food. The service is pretty good but not brilliant but the sommelier knows his stuff.

Unique little place in the basement of a brownstone. Bar out front and dining room behind. Book a window seat. Food and service are very good. Bar clears out early, so sit there for your after dinner drink.

I feel like, my friends have been holding out. This place is amazing. A GEM! The food is so good. I had the Pork Belly, Egg and potatoes. Oh so nice. The mimosas are next level. I wanted to try the mac and cheese but heard it was 90 bucks! I was hoping it was a joke, but hey quality products! I will try dinner next. Brunch in a garden, YES. A great date place even though I was there for business.

The outside garden has a fireplace and canopy which is cozy, classy, and romantic. Nice wine list and gourmet appetizers. Service is good without being intrusive. This is the perfect spot for a quiet, private conversation. More of a pre-dinner hangout but worth stopping by…BTW, Trump, who has never eaten there says it is the worst food in the city…You have to love that they put it in their advertising

Went here for an anniversary dinner and it is incredible. Highly recommend - have sat inside for both of the times I have gone here but would love to try the outside seating now that it is warmer out.

We asked to be sat in the beautiful atrium but were told is wasn't possible. On arriving there were only 2 tables occupied there. We were sat in the quaint dining room. Old rustic furniture packed tightly into this space. The brunch menu is simple but adequate. We had a variety of sweet and savoury dishes. As well as cocktails and coffee. The coffee was not refilled. Very unAmerican and unexpected. During our meal we had 6 different servers tend the table. Ranging from polite but impersonal to lazy and rude. It's hard to build a rapport when such a range of staff tend your table. The guy who brought our meals just dropped the plates down in front of us. No "enjoy your food". Nothing. Which is a shame as I was looking forward to this experience on our trip.

The Waverly Inn was recommended by friends who used to live in the area and now return for special occasions. The atmospheric restaurant was full on a Monday evening, although fortunately not too loud. The food was excellent, the wait staff polite and helpful. We started with a large plate of oysters for the table and then a variety of individual courses. Everyone was pleased with their choices. Absolutely no complaints, although it is not cheap!

Very nice ambiance in a very quiet part of west village. We had brunch and the food was nothing spectacular but good. Not a foodie destination but we had a lovely quiet booth and sat and chatted over coffee well past our meal. Outside garden great in warmer weather and inside would be great for a date on a cold winter night.

This quaint spot has a Michelin Star rating and is super cute inside. The old bar when u enter leads to a dark dining area that opens up to an adorable garden patio. Highly recommend. The waiters were friendly and the host Joey was exceptional! We got the caramelized grapefruit over ricotta cheese which was absolutely fantastic! The deviled eggs were also good and the bagel and Lox was perfect. I also had the Bloody Mary which was wonderfully spiced with horseradish! Limited outdoor seating out front so get there early if you desire an outside table. I would go back in a second!

This restaurant was great. First, we had a problem with out neighboring table being extremely loud. We asked to move and the host accommodated us. Second the food was fabulous. I had the special, the soft shell crab. Great. Third, our waiter Erudio was extremely helpful and helped us at every turn.

Top notch food, excellent service and great wine selection. But start with a cocktail! I will visit again - Waverly Inn is a hidden gem that - ironically - I'd like to remain hidden!

Came here for Sunday brunch and was seated near the bar area. Services were good, very professional. Staffs are friendly, despite the frantic pace they are under. Food was good in both quality and portion size, but not so sure it matches the price tag. If you are able to get to sit in the courtyard, it is just wonderful.

It is a good place for couples to go. The food and service was excellent. We had the avocado salad and it was tasteful. Then our main course came. I had the chicken and my date had the salmon. Both equally great in presentation and taste. We sat at the back in the garden and it was so romantic and special. I have to come back cause they have he best mac and cheese. Yup made with truffle oil and it costs more than any main course on the menu. So that is for my next visit. If you want to impress a date. That is the place to be.

Was recommended Waverly as a cosy place to have dinner. The place is jammed and seats close to each other but overall Ok-ish. Service is very fast though our waiter was a bit unclear in his explanations so we gave him the benefit of doubt. I tried quinoa salad for starter and duck breast for main, which were really good. I understand that my friends were also happy with what they ate though salmon seemed a bit dull. The biggest disappointment was the extremely expensive bill as mentioned here before. Way too expensive and while food was good, not that good. Not a good value for money. Also they dont let you take pics since apparently celebrities may be sitting next to you... we had none, fyi.

situated in trendy west village, the Waverley enjoys a long pedigree, firmly established over many years.being close to the famous Simon and Garfunkel Bleeker street, adds a touch of gravitas. a local favourite of our five nieces, who live locally,we held a reunion dinner on our recent visit to the City.expect casual dining prepared in a serious way.its a limited choice with additional daily specials on offer.an amusing touch is a negative one liner by Donald Trump, who has never visited the restaurant, printed across the top of the menu chart.'worst food in New York'. the seven of us chose salads-vegetable and Roquefort wedge, macaroni cheese with summer truffle($90),burger,crab cakes, salmon, chicken pot pie,spinach-sauté and creamed, onion rings and roasted crimini. we drank JW Black($20 double),Ommegang lager($10),Friulano white($60) and the usual water, soft drinks and herbal teas. everything was as expected.the salads crispy with a tangy dressing.the pot pie served in skillet kept the food hot, whilest the fish and burger options did the job.stand outs include the macaroni-a strong cheese and garlic flavour.(forget the truffle option.its expensive and adds nothing to the dish).the bread basket is delicious scones,a nice touch.lose the creamed spinach,Chef.wet and stringy.not what one would expect.the truffles were dry and tasteless.(some high pressure selling here). James took good care of us.the service is slick without being intrusive.made a good wine recommendation.the bill without liquor came to $376.add $100 for booze plus $84 tip. (at the foot of the invoice is a suggested sliding scale of what to tip from 18%-22%.cheeky!). it's a fun night out.we all had a good time.if you're in the neighbourhood, worth a visit.j

We visited the Waverly Inn for dinner on a cold Friday night and loved the cozy vibe of the restaurant - low lighting, twinkling lights and cozy corners. Everyone enjoyed their food - the chicken pot pie and mashed potato were both delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful when it came to food and wine choices. I would definitely return when next in NYC!

Last night I had dinner with two wonderful business associates at the Waverly Inn in New York. It is not the first time that I have eaten there and nor will it be the last. The setting is wonderful in the West Village. The decor is incredibly interesting with powerful stylised murals on the walls. Whilst it can accommodate many guests it is not overly noisy and privacy is obtained through clever seating. One of my guests was a high profile lady yet our privacy was sufficient to avoid the normal glances or approached from others. The service is, naturally, excellent. Attentive but not intrusive. The menu covers all tastes from simple chicken pot pies to beautifully prepared catch of the day. They are famous for their “Mac and Cheese with shave Truffles”. My dinner guests both had a house special green salad to start and the sea bass as a main. I had clam chowder with bacon to start and the chicken pot pie as a main. All were excellent. If you are in New York, and around the village, I would highly recommend The Waverly Inn.

As soon as I had settled in to my room and was just about to go to bed, I get a knock on the door from my best friend whom I was visiting telling me to beat my face and get some clothes on as we were going for dinner. We got a cab to The Waverly Inn and the appearance of it outside was so cute. We went inside and my initial thoughts was this looks like an fancy, old English pub, with all the wood and the bar stools. We were taken to our seats which were at the back in the garden area. You walk through the main dining area with art on the wall and glam looked red booths. The garden area had a plethora of obscure decorations and plants with handing lanterns, which added to the restaurants unique feel. It felt very open and spacious due to the high ceilings. I had the salmon with mashed potatoes. The mash potatoes were the best I've had in a long time. Good flavour and not too salty and the salmon was so yummy. Didn't stay as long as I would've normally due to the fact I was literally falling asleep as had endured a turbulent 7hr+ flight but definitely a must go restaurant. (p.s. The menu had a hilarious quote 'Waverly Inn - worst food in city - Donald Trump')

Excellent restaurant with great service. From the bartender through all the wait staff, couldn't have been any more fun!

The docor and service was very nice, but the meal certainly left much to be desired. Tomato salad appetizer was excellent and so were the biscuits. I had the chicken pot pie, nothing memorable about it. I have had frozen ones from the grocery store that were better. My sister had the chicken over a bed of some type of greens and 3 fried potato chips, she could not even eat it. My daughter had the duck which was actually very good. We decided to try desert, we had bananas foster. Ok, but certainly not memorable. I would not recommend this restaurant to friends or family.

As a West Village resident, we tried the Waverly Inn a couple months back and decided to return with some friends again for Sat evening dinner. The area we were seated in had some puddles below however the overhead heaters were very much appreciated (though they went off a third of the way through the dinner but were restored pretty quickly). The waiter was delayed in greeting our entire party and when he did, came across as somewhat rude and almost put upon... not exactly the hospitality gene one would expect. The cocktails we ordered were mediocre and frankly tasted somewhat watered down. The food was delicious overall so compliments to the chef! The wait staff did not properly clear the appetizers and re-set for dinner service before the dinners hastily appeared at the table. The waiter did check back to ask how everything was and accommodated our requests. We felt rushed at the end as the check was dropped and the final signed bill was retrieved before we stepped away (felt like a diner vs a fine dining establishment). The host or manager we encountered who served us our drink was not particularly hospitable either. The service generally felt attitude laden, which we don’t mind as long as the service delivery matches the steep price point. when you drop more than $100 a head, you expect friendlier service and a better sense of feeling welcomed. To encourage repeat clientele, the service has to be refined some more and the staff should be more courteous and friendlier to the clientele. There are so many great restaurants in NYC — and even in the West Village — so each experience is a true moment of truth. We don’t intend to return anytime soon and not because the food isn’t good but because we didn’t feel as welcomed as we would expect.

Great atmosphere in this faux-Parisian brasserie. Even the waiter reminded me of Paris. (Ugh, is that not a compliment? Sorry, did not mean it this way.) The traditional French food (eg, duck confit) was great and the more Americanized fare (burger) was fine, too. Pricey for what it is, but the decor and the crowd are part of the deal.

Service staff was really good. And the food was solid. Known as a hang out for the actors of NYC (don’t use your flash if you do take pics) it is really busy and reservations are required. One of the best features is its ambiance and the full wall mural that you can talk about all night.

I have wanted to come to this restaurant for such a long time. On a whim, I decided to make a reservation for a Saturday night no less. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get one. True it was early, but that is what we wanted. This restaurant is so charming and romantic,. The Edward Sorel paintings of the celebrities that use to come in to eat really gives the restaurant that feel of old New York. It is fun to see if you can pick out who is who.We are not from the drinkers, and we had four, two each. My husband was trying to sneak away mine. The drink we ordered was OFF THE CHARTS! This special drink is fabulously delicious. It is called THE LEMONADE!! It is contagious like potato chips, you cannot just have one. The food was excellent. I had the famous Chicken Pot Pie and my husband had a super delicious pork dish which was a special on the menu. Desert was yummy chocolate tart! All in all we enjoyed the candle light, the ambience and the DRINKS!!! Reservations are a must. I would definitely like to dine again at this special bit of old New York, if I could ever get a reservation again. A Must Dine Restaurant!

I had not been here in over ten years. I was a bit worried because the reviews indicated that the hosts and wait staff were rude and ungrateful for your business. I must have picked the right day because this was not my experience. Carolyn was our waitress and she was very nice and attentive. The food is still great and the decor really holds all the charm as when this was THE place to be. I would encourage people to continue to frequent this restaurant and enjoy all of the nuances that made it great to start with.

We live in Manhattan and many of our favorite restaurants have closed over the years. We're grateful The Waverly Inn is still open, and we hope it stays that way. If you love good food and ambience look no further. As always, service was exceptional, food delicious, and the entire night lovely.

It's worth the wait for your reserved table because the food is fantastic! We had Grant as our waiter and he was always there to bring another glass of wine or another course.

We came across this restaurant walking around the "Village" areas. Like a local English Pub which I think is the aim. Slightly formal vibe inside and seats are very close together in some areas (and this was the case for us). But a lot of atmosphere. Staff again sort of formal, but friendly enough. The food was excellent. My main point to note was that it was a very quick meal. There seemed a little pressure to order, and then the starter and entree (main) followed a little too fast for a relaxing Holiday meal (and to let the first course settle). And then when we didn't want dessert, the bill followed with equal speed. For the pricing the service could have been a little more relaxed in pace.

Tried to get a table my four last visits to NYC and it's a popular restaurant but finally I got a table on a Saturday! It's a lovely spot with great service and great food! It met all my expectations and I'm already looking forward to my next visit! I love the interior! The only thing I thing that could be better is the distance to your neighbor at the table next to you! Increase it and the restaurant would get the highest grade from me!

Just about every adjective good & bad are used for this restaurant.Did not sway us in the least. We really liked it ! It is a tad dark ,lighting wise but so charming. We had a circular table for 4 & even though they got packed noise level was not an issue.Service was very good, all our needs were met with little intrusion. We had wine vs the cocktails. For dinner we all had winners. Stand outs, the crab cakes, the onion rings, dover sole, chicken pot pie & the oysters. And yes, my husband enjoyed his expensive burger. Is it expensive, yes but it's all relevant to the overall experience. We lucked out & will return.

The moment you arrive in The Waverly Inn you feel a real sense of coziness. Like someone has given you a huge blanket or bear hug! Set on a street corner in one of the cutest Manhattan neighbourhoods its decor is all wood, low slung ceilings and great artist murals. The food was excellent, we both decided to have the steak which was incredibly rich and tender. Cooked perfectly. We did make an error by ordering three sides (we forgot we were in the U.S). Which was far too much food. The fries and spinach were special indeed. Yum! We had some ice cream to share to finish, dulce de leche I believe. Nice but not outstanding. We ordered a bottle of one of our favourite Californian reds, from the Ridge estate. It was quite pricey but went with the steak very harmoniously. Service was very good, prompt but not rushed. Overall I would say its a great place and would recommend it in a heartbeat.

The Waverly has an old school look about it, tables are quite close together so not the best for a intimate dinner (unless you like others listening to you whispering sweet nothings) the ambience of the place is very good, with a nice atrium out the back which we ate in. The Octopus I had for starter was very good and a healthy size. I followed this up with the Veal which was excellent. Only reason the restaurant didn't score 5 stars was due the cost, its not cheap and just about value for money, the wine is very over priced. The service at times felt rushed, but not too much.

I just had to finally eat here. I love this quintessential NY style brownstone restaurant. The food was good, great people watching, dimly lit tables, service was great. Best was on the top of the menu "This is the worst food in NY" -Donald Trump"

Very nice place to go and eat, been there a couple of times and it still nice, excellent service and a good meny. Food was great and the atmosphere is something extra.

I love this place. What a gem. Great food, great space, great service blah blah blah. A very New York experience. This was my second visit, I hope there's a third.

Met up with friends for some pre-dinner drinks and snacks. Great spot, perfect wine and sharing plates. Pleasant and attentive service. On the pricey side, but worth it

Food is high quality and very well prepared. Ambience is high class West Village. Bar is cool with professional bartenders. Prices are within range for this caliber of an establishment. I will definitely return and recommend to others. My only issue was our waiter, he did not appear happy, attentive or interested. He never asked us if we were enjoying our dinner and put the check on the table prior to my request. (ouch) I was a waiter during my college years and thats not how it's done.

Food was good, service was ok. While I found the wine prices outrageous (glass $12-24 and bottles from $100-2,000) what I really didn't appreciate is the extra glass added to the bill that I only noticed after I got home. Yes I know, I should have checked there but when with friends and in a dark restaurant, the last thing was to pick through the bill. Interestingly, the bartender was the least friendly person in the place with a personality of broom. Expected at least a "hi" in a place with $20 cocktails.

Great ambience, and feel, although the seating we had was the one downside, as we were next to a main run between tables, and so people moving past could not avoid but bumping into one of the chairs. Food was extremely good, and generous portions. Service best described as efficient. All was well cooked and presented. It is expensive but overall it was a very good experience.

We met up with my cousin who lives in Soho while we were visiting NYC. She suggested The Waverly. It really doesn’t look like much from the outside and even when you first enter - you’re in a very small, dark bar area which is not very inviting. The dining room, especially the garden room are delightful, however. Try to sit in the Garden Room if you can. We all enjoyed our brunch, I particularly liked my bananas fosters French toast. Yum!

First off, this is really not the restaurant I would have selected had I been the one to choose. Being one who prefers farm to table, in season selections, I will say that the food was beautifully served and presented. I had sea bass on a bed of vegetables. The sea bass was perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were tasty but lacked that from the garden freshness. I found whatever the vegetables were cooked in to be nicely flavored but a bit heavy.

We were visiting NYC for x4 days from London and had heard that the Inn was one of THE places to eat in Greenwich Village. A lovely, cosy bar but we were there very early. The bar was heaving and uncomfortable as we left. Also very strange that bar tab couldn’t be passed to our table. Not sure what that was about? The owner was a little pompous and arrogant in not allowing photographs to be taken of an empty dining room (I can understand a no photographs policy when customers are about). Maybe trying to maintain the aurora and mystic of the place eg. no website to speak of. In any event, waiting staff were helpful and attentive. Tables unfortunately cramped. Food was good but not great, which we would have expected, given the prices being charged.

This restaurant has some very good assets. It is in a nice neighborhood, food is great (chicken pot pie at around 25 usd is a must), great wines (by the glass and bottles), and gives you a very intimate place for couples. On the downside is that the tables are very close and if you go in the busy hours, this can be somehow disturbing. As a Big plus, it is one block away from the Village Vanguard, where you can listen to great jazz. Dinner plus jazz, excellent combo for a NYC night!

Had a lovely birthday dinner last week. The ambience in back room with the fireplace was fabulous. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and helpful without hovering. There's a nice selection of favourite starters, mains and desserts that do not disappoint. I had the oysters for openers and the squid ink pasta with calamari special for my entree. We also had the tuna, and the signature chicken pot pies. Evening was well prepared, fresh and tasty. The bananas foster dessert was excellent. We will be back.

Disappointing food and service. Had the burger for $22. Not too different from a burguer at Five Guys or JG Melon for half of the price.

The menu starts off positively, a quotation from Donald Trump that should compel any sentient being to want to like this place. But, alas, it is not all that worth it. Yes, it is old New Yorky (and in the bar area, smells it too). The service was competent. But front of house was snooty. We were waiting for a member of our party. The two of us there were tired and hot and wanted to sit. We would have happily ordered drinks, but NO - in an empty restaurant, they would not seat us until the straggler arrived. Food was also competent and well presented, but WAY overpriced even by NYC standards. In a city with a myriad choices, I would not choose to return. Pedigree doesn’t make a great dining experience.

The only part of the experience that was half enjoyable was getting a reservation from someone who knows someone. The anticipation was fun. The actual experience? Not so much. We were seated within 30 minutes of our reservation, which was OK for a crowded Valentine's Day. Then the minutes began ticking by. And ticking. We waited for water. We waited to order wine (from a pretentious sommelier who had as his sole mission talking us into something more expensive.) We waited -- wait for it -- for menus! Finally, 55 minutes after we reached the table we placed our orders. After that the food arrived promptly, which was not a surprise, considering how little thought and care went into its preparation. Everything was served exceedingly hot, which I assume is supposed to be authentic to its French-country, artisan style, It's not. My onion soup a first course was decent, once it cooled to a safe temperature, but my main course cassoulet was dry and inedible. It was just a skillet of paradoxically molten hot but undercooked beans. Do not order the bland side dishes (mashed potatoes, etc.) which add to your bill but not your enjoyment. The main dishes are plenty large enough to satisfy your daily calorie count, if not your palate.

Wines are freaking overpriced Service seemed rushed but fine overall Rooms are beautifully decorated and historical

The Waverly Lemonade and Chicken Pot Pie were on point. The place is a little too much of a scene for me, but I enjoyed the experience. It took them over 30 min to sit us and our waiter took a long time to get our order, but they were friendly and the food came out fast, hot and delicious.

Dined here on 2/27/16. Elegant restaurant that offers a cozy, albeit tight, setting for a good meal. If you can get the Garden Room, do so. Be prepared however to be sitting in close quarters to the tables next to you. Though not a loud place, it's tough to have a private conversation without being heard by the table next to you. Service was top notch and food was very good. I was a little disappointed in that on the online menu, they had a duck breast entrée that I was planning to get. On this night though, it was not available, so I settled for the cheeseburger instead. We split a wedge salad, and though tasty, it was a bit on the small side. My wife got the chicken pot pie and I got the burger. My wife said that the pot pie was one of the best she has ever eaten. I wish I could say the same for the burger. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't something that was all that special. The biscuits that they serve at the beginning of the meal were out of this world! So moist and flakey! Didn't get dessert since nothing on that menu suited our fancy. A nice establishment in Greenwich Village for a good dining night out.

Love love love The Waverly. We had a great meal... splitting the wedge salad, the gnocchi, the shishito peppers, and the chicken pot pie (a random but awesome selection). I love how well The Waverly does luxurious comfort food (the mac & cheese is also excellent). Always a fun, bustling scene and you are bound to spot a celebrity or two!

I had booked lunch on a Saturday in June, but the restaurant was almost empty, so I guess drop-ins are fine. I immediately liked the whole feel of the place, relaxed, yet understated luxury. They even have a couple of outside tables facing the quiet street, but we opted for an “almost-outside-table” in the back of the restaurant instead. They do have beer even though one of the reviews says they do not (I have photo proof!), which will go nicely with your burger and fries. I will definitely have Waverly on my shortlist, next time I will go for dinner!

Ambience was delicious as was the food and wine. Service excellent. A hidden jewel in NYC crown If you are in the city don't miss the opportunity to taste the chicken pot pie The decor is very 1920 prohibition style and it feels like a secret bunker under the stairs of an NYC townhouse but don't be fooled by the simple entrance. This is a real treat No photos available as cameras excluded due to the number of celebrities enjoying privacy

The Waverley in, is a charming Tavern style restaurant and pub, located on an idyllic street in the West Village. The restaurant, which has now become a neighborhood staple, was once a quintessential exclusive, impossible to get a reservation, celebrity and power restaurant owned by Graydon Carter of Vanity Fair fame. It’s no longer what it was, but somebody clearly forgot to update the staff. The food is dependable, classic, standby American fare, slightly elevated, but certainly not noteworthy. We couldn’t quite put our finger on it but it’s painfully evident, that several of the staff members aren't happy to be working there - which is a shame, because it immediately puts a damper on the meal and the overall dining experience. There’s nothing worse than having to tread on egg shells around your servers, and receive snooty attitude laced treatment from the Maitre D’ upon checking in and when being seated l. I don't regret going, especially how it's been such a mainstay of the West Village for so many years. But, given the lackluster mediocrity of the cuisine and the surly, contemptuous behavior of the staff, I don't see a reason to ever go back.

Still have the runs Couldn’t wait to return again after our November visit The place is overrated, overpriced and overcrowded We sat arm to arm with the next table and because of the noise we couldn’t hear each other talk. We also noticed that there were no sprinklers - could be a fire trap We seem rushed by the wait staff and the food was less than fair After our main course the desert menus were were place on dirty paper that covered the table cloths. We asked for the paper to be changed and management had to be asked When the grumpy waiter changed the paper he palmed and finger gripped the water glasses with his dirty hands No need to return

You can't miss Sunday brunch if you are in NYC and the Waverly Inn is a good place to have one. Located on a charming street in the West Village, it has both inside and outside seating. Since the weather was pleasant we chose to sit outside on both our visits for Sunday Brunch. I would highly recommend the Eggs Benedict with a Bellini. Their's was one of the best Eggs Benedict I have had. The hollandaise sauce was perfection and the muffin toasted just the way I like it. Both times I finished off the brunch with their sorbet of the day. Delicious! Will definitely visit for Sunday brunch on my next trip too.

A couple of lifetime NYC locals booked this for our dinner this evening and they are usually good judges but I was a bit apprehensive when I read some of the reviews on this site. However I'm glad they did! The restaurant has a magnificent old world/English and yet New Yorker appeal. It is quaint but really inviting. Had the crab cake for an appetiser-really good. I then had the fillet mignon for the main even though I'm not usually a fillet eater (I prefer NY strip and Rib Eye) but wow, it was like butter it melted in the mouth that easily. It was absolutely perfectly cooked. My wife had the Amish Chicken and it was juicy, succulent - as good as chicken basically can be. One off our friends had the Chicken pot pie and that was really good also. Accompanied by a good Brunello and finished with a very nice Chocolate Mousse I walked away extremely satisfied with the entire evening. Being from Australia I will definitely be back next time I'm in town!

Had dinner with a friend during my last week's trip to NY. It was a very nice evening so we were on the outdoor tables. Setting is nice, service is very good, food is fine, but the price level is difficult to understand and hence to match with the quality of food. This is mainly because by no means is fine dining. Just a good restaurant, with good and tasty food but priced at the level of a Michelin-star one. I had an asparragus starter withe a chicken pie and my friend oysters with risotto as main. Again, nice food but quite basic and overpriced.

My friend and I had our "grand finale" dinner here, to round off a girls-trip to NYC, and while it was wonderful, I couldn't help wishing that I was able to experience it with my husband. A tiny "hole in the wall" spot that we would never have found if not sent by resident New Yorkers. Cozy, romantic, old world with a NY twist. Our waiter was the perfect mix of attentive, but never interruptive. The wine selection was impressive, and my filet mignon was to die for. It was an expensive meal, but definitely worth it!

I read a couple of reviews before going. Most were right on nose. Place is very very pretty if you sit in the Garden. Food was ok, nothing bad just ok. Service was fairly good until near the end when we ordered more drinks which never appeared. Very expensive for the food and service.

I cannot understand other reviews except for the fact that most people dine in the evening there and are unaware of how filthy this place is, very dark even in the daylight. Poor choice for lunch as all they did was breakfast items or limp salads. May I say I was disgusted with our waiter who's sweat dripped from his face onto our table. Made me queasy thinking about the salads we had just ordered. Very ordinary salad, no flavour. Atmosphere in daytime is not great. I truly do not understand the hype here. It's awful and needs a good clean. Not friendly, food awful and ambiance zero. Our experience does not deserve one star. Awful experience!

We flew into NY for a birthday celebration and booked dinner here after a recommendation from friends. What a beautiful environment! The fireplaces, the dark cozy decorated rooms and the beautiful garden make this place stand out in NY. But I was surprised that the food although sounded good from the menu it was just fair. Not amazing for the price point. Then the service was very disappointing. Very cold and unfriendly. They certainly didn't act like they were interested in our dining experience. I'd say on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 5. Beautiful but not worth it.

While on the pricer side for brunch, this a go-to spot my friends I frequent. Good food, quaint atmosphere, and in the heart of the West Village, for the perfect afternoon stroll after brunch.

Bucket list item for us. Went for my birthday. Sat in the conservatory (garden) and loved it. Got there early so there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. My online reservation request was for the conservatory; the hostess brought me to an inside table. I told her I had requested the conservatory and she agreed to bring us there which was fine. Yes the food is expensive but we found it delicious. We had attentive, lovely service. The atmosphere is divine, inside and out. There is a bar you can eat at, first come first serve. There is also outdoor street dining. Funny anecdote about the "snobbery": we went outside after our meal and asked a man who appeared to be the manager (he was chatting with the staff and looked official) to take our photo. He stared down his nose at us and hesitated but agreed to. He did take a lovely photo of us and we had a good laugh at his attitude.

In a foodie and know most NYC restaurants. Came here for a birthday dinner at the end of summer. Requested a nice table but got pushed out all the way to the outside garden where it was hot! Setting could be nice if tables weren't stuffed so close to each other. The food while exciting on the menu was horrible. I had a fish special which tasted like a boiled piece of fish that tasted slightly bitter. Salmon appetizer tasted like a cheap store bought salmon. Drinks tasted like medicine. This place is snobby and won't give you a good table unless you are a regular. Good for them I won't be coming back. Oh the best part of,this was service. It was betond excellent, friendly, warm and helpful. Wish the poor waiter had more to work with as far as food recommendations.

Such a quaint place. We were able to sit in the garden and had a great meal. 6 of us and no complaints whatsoever. Great atmosphere on a quiet little corner

wow what a place buzzing for drinks and dinner like an english gastro pub on steriodsFood was amazing especially thr Chicken Pot pie also the Mac and Cheese with black truffle was off the charts good

We have eaten at Waverly Inn on several occasions, including private parties in the conservatory . However we had a very poor experience last night . We had to wait 45 minutes for our table though they did comp us a found of free drinks at the bar . The conservatory had a private party but the restaurant made the mistake of having another party of 25 people or so in the main dining room. They were young , very drunk and very loud . We could barely hear each other’s conversation . The kale salad and hamachi starters were good . We had the Mac and cheese with truffles shaved on them - the good part is the mac n cheese is tasty and they shaved a large portion on black truffles . The bad part - the truffle in question was basically tasteless and without the traditional smell . We had to wait a very long time for our entrees - because of the private party in the back - and the Dover Sole my wife has each time came with a ramekin of unmelted butter instead of the meunière style they usually did. My chicken pot pie was ok rather than the usual delicious . We did not have any desert as dinner had gone on too long and the incessant partying st the 25 person table behind us who were all getting up and wandering around glasses in hand was exhausting . This is not a typical night at Waverly Inn however there is a reason large parties should be in a private room . And if the private room is already busy the restaurant should either turn down the second party reservation or not accept regular reservations. Will we go back . Probably - and only because of our many great experiences there - but not for a while . One gets the feeling the owners put short- term financial considerations over giving guests a good experience . .

Unfortunately, Trump is correct is being proudly noted on the menu that the Waverly Inn is the worst place in NYC. Went with friends, got burgers, cheese plate, salad, tartare and the signature chicken pot pie. Thank goodness we didn't go for the truffle Mac and Cheese for 65 bucks as it was evident it would've been a ridiculous waste. French fries were way too salty and in little broken pieces. Come on, can't even make French fries properly? Burgers were lauded by wait staff as the best in NYC. No beefy taste, very small patty, and 26 bucks. Five guys makes a better burger, hands down. At least Salman Rushdie seemed to think the place was worthy being present. I guess it's for people who want a place to eat meh food, pay 3x for it and maybe catch a celeb eating nearby. I guess I'm not the demographic.

Love it here. It has become my favorite restaurant in all of NY. The place is like a warm hug. The ambience and food is phenomenal, and the everyone there is always so welcoming and friendly. My personal favorites are the chicken pot pie and bananas foster. I was just there again on Sunday, and it was as amazing as always.

Not many things I agree with what the POTUS says but he was dead on here. For the cost this WAS the worst food in the city. karma is a bit*h Waverly. Over priced, small portions and the food sucked. They didn't even have beer! Yes, no beer! Ordered bottle of wine which was best part of meal. I got the famous Pot Pie, it was filled with peas. Wife ordered a fish special, was cold not cooked and just terrible. Do not get the octopus, only thing that was good were the onion rings. I wanted to order the mac n cheese but it was 80 bucks! Do not go here, many other choices in the city where you can spend 300 bucks and not be hungry after dinner.

After waiting for weeks to get a table we realized it's just a hyped up Dennys. Seriously, just eat at Denny's. You'll save big $ and tastes about the same. Waiters had a snobby and elitist attitude. It was difficult to enjoy the evening bc the entire order had to be placed at once. The only thing going for it is the ambiance which you can't even enjoy bc you are being rushed. There are so many awesome restaurants in NYC, why choose this one? We won't be back.

If you are an ordinary person and Google "Waverly Inn", you might be frightened by old stories of impossible-to-get reservations and snooty staff. This is no longer the case. Probably the management has figured out that you can't sustain a restaurant on celebrities alone, and so has made it more accessible to the general public. Our group of 8 was able to reserve two separate tables just a couple of hours before we went on a Sunday evening. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated courteously, if not exactly warmly. There are two dining sections - a greenhouse which was a backyard of these old townhouses long ago (the bright area) and a very dark interior (the romantic area). We were shown to the greenhouse, which was fine with us, but I imagine you can express a preference. The food was as many others have described it - competent American, with enough variety for most tastes. I will take issue with other reviewers and opine that the Hollandaise sauce, which accompanies many items, is made in advance and has some kind of stiffening agent, and thus comes out rather bland. That aside, all our party were Satisfied to Highly Satisfied with our various choices. The fries and the onion rings were terrific, and the wines were good enough for the price. Service was correct. The prohibition on photography should be modified. Supposedly to protect celebrities from constantly being bothered, it also prevents others from shooting their own party or taking a memento shot of the interior decor. Since most of the patrons are in fact ordinary people (with money, to be sure), camera-shy celebrities should be seated in booths, and patrons simply admonished to respect the privacy of the other diners. I have been in other restaurants which were in fact patronized by celebrities, and can't remember one that outright prohibited photography.

We had a lovely Sunday brunch in the garden. Lots of delicious entrees from which to choose. We appreciated that the waitstaff did not hustle us out once we completed our entrees. A bit pricey. Probably good to make reservations ahead of time.

Everything about Graydon Carter's magnificent restaurant works: it's an old, charming, cozy place, probably ideal for fireside dinners in winter. But we were there on a balmy fall evening, and sat outside on the terrace. Our waiter Andrew was attentive, helpful, and funny; he was so entertaining, I almost expected a cover charge added to the bill. The food was, of course magnificent. We were tempted by the huge Porterhouse for four, but one of us said no, so we opted for pasta, fish, chicken, and a large salad. All were superb. The place is pricey, but sometimes it's just worth it. Also: the sommelier Colin was terrific, and justifiably proud of his vast, comprehensive list. A+ and BRAVO to all!

Recommended by a friend, we came to this discrete and low profile restaurant on a warm summer evening. easily missed from the street, it is an old school almost ye olde English pub style diner. Good service from the start , we enjoyed the classic menu. It is not an innovative or "tricked up " restaurant - rather some basic food done well. A good wine list complemented my choice of Roasted Amish chicken. The menu is headlined by a great quote - from Donald Trump - "Waverly Inn- worst food in the city" ! This is most certainly not the case - but pretty funny!

This tucked away restaurant was recommended to me and really glad we went. It was described to me as The Ivy in New York and it was a definite highlight of our trip. Romantic but quite traditional and rustic with lots of character. A very varied menu with both meat and fish dishes. Attentive staff but not imposing. The veal masala was excellent as was the halibut. Based on the quality of the food, you will need to book and if our experience is anything to go by then have a map and show your taxi driver exactly where you want to go.

Very lovely ambience inside or in the inside garden court. Very attentive and friendly service. The food is very good including the blue cheese wedge salad, duck breast, onion rings, and cheesecake. A nice and popular restaurant in the Greenwich Village area.

Friends invite us for dinner, was Monday and the place was crowded. We had a reservation. The food was normal ,not something special and amazing, the environment was very nice, the fireplace was burning in the corner. Service was ok.the best tables are in the garden backside.

I've been before. And I will probably go again, although I am wondering why I would do this with so many fantastic spots in Manhattan. Without a doubt the food is good. So I cannot complain on this point. Service still has too much attitude. It isn't necessary. It was a rainy night in the Summer, so the low ceilings and the usual crowded ambiance meant some parts of the restaurant were too hot and others too cold. We were in an area that was way too hot, nothing the staff could do to help. I rarely order chicken in a restaurant, but they sure know how to make it here. Hats off to the chef for this. In my opinion, a big part of its success is its history. This doesn't mean you shouldn't go!

Our first night in NYC and we were lucky enough to be seated in the beautiful garden room. We started with the cold seafood apps [tuna and cobia] which were both delicious and refreshing. My wife had the lobster salad and I the chicken pot pie for our entrees. Somm recommended a nice Rose that was the perfect fit for a July evening.

We live in the immediate neighborhood and used to come here regularly before it became a celebrity hang out. We always liked it and were delighted to hear that one could once again get in. We went for an early dinner and the bar area was busy as we entered. The place is still charming and that pleased us. We were turned off quickly when the waitress told us that the specialty was mac and cheese with truffles - for $150. !!!! OR, that any entree could be available with truffles for $130. !!! Give me a break. We were again "warmed up" by the two biscuits placed on the table that were divine. We thought that if the food was anywhere near as good as these biscuits (by the way, we were not asked if we'd like more) we were going to have a great dinner. BUT, that was not the case. I ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer and thought they were not noteworthy. My chicken pot pie entree was equally as disappointing. The crust was not flaky and tasty and the inside was boring and needed salt. We shared a cheese platter for desert and the three pieces of cheese were mundane. We found the experience of dining there pretentious and certainly were not impressed by their food.

I have been to The Waverly Inn several times and have always enjoyed myself. This time was pretty cool, since Graydon Carter himself was sitting at a table with some friends. Here is my breakdown: Location - Quintessential New York in the bottom level of a West Village townhouse. It is quaint, dim and such a cool venue for a cool or cold night. My favorite spot is in the back in the garden area. They have a great little bar area for a pre-dinner cocktail. Food - I had the cheeseburger and it was out of this world. Simple, but delectable. The biscuits they bring at the beginning give a new meaning to buttery and delicious. Dinner would not be complete without the truffle mac and cheese, which has fresh shaved truffle on top. This time, we ordered it as an appetizer and shared. Yum! Service - No complaints. Prompt, attentive and friendly. Overall, have always had a great experience. Look forward to many more meals there when I find myself in the city.

delicious food and lovely considerate staff. can recommend the vegetarian couscous and lamb chops! extensive wine collection. we sat in the garden room which was lovely, felt abit like sitting in a good old English pub! but with slightly more salubrious food!

We went on a cold rainy night sitting by the fireplace. The service was excellent, the food delicious, and the ambiance magical. Old world elegance without the attitude! Highly recommend the salmon and the wine choices were top notch. Go for the romance and the experience!!

Waverly Inn is good for drinks and food, cozy atmosphere and very much New York style place! Not that easy to get table there but it's worth to visit!

The Waverly Inn is regarded as one of the finest dining experiences in New York. For me, a great dining “experience” includes welcoming, professional, and expertly efficient staff. The waiting staff looked miserable and were slow to serve but the killer moment was the head barman. I assume he’s the head as he is in his mid 50s and looked experienced yet he was, without doubt, the rudest, most unwelcoming and pretentious barman I’ve encountered - ever. It’s a stain on the Waverly experience as it leaves the worst possible first impression - the drink before dinner. The positives include the stunning ambience, the manageress who was charming and the food, which was top quality albeit overpriced. I would recommend going solely based on its West Village 19th century ambience but if the barman is in his 50s, wearing braces and greets you with a grunt, walk out and come another day. Life is too short.

Fantastic place - open fires, efficient service, knowledgable waiters. Beautiful decor. A piece of old school New York lux - perfect dinner to kick off our honeymoon. Mouth watering burgers. Loved it.

It's nice, cozy and offers very well defined Italian style dishes. Happy to see it remains a standard value about 13 years after its opening.
Exceptional food and service
We just loved this restaurant! It has so much character and charm. Set on a gorgeous street, this place just feels like NYC magic. We had the shrimp cocktail and burrata to start and then I had the salmon for my main. It was heaven. The cocktails are strong but delicious and the service was top notch. You are also served home made complimentary biscuits with this sweet butter that was pretty life changing. Definitely make a reservation as this place gets really busy. Loved it.
