Nice afternoon tea but not quite up to expectations

By KEI2001 |

We booked afternoon tea here after reading high reviews for The Whitby to celebrate a birthday for my teenage daughter. We checked in 20 minutes early and despite it not seeming busy, our table was not ready. The hostess referred us to the lobby to sit and then completely forgot about us. After waiting until just after our reservation time, I went back to the hostess who didn’t even remember that we had checked in. She admitted she had forgotten! Once seated, we were given the menu for their tea. They were out of their house specialty tea which was disappointing. I had considered the vegetarian or vegan menu but was informed that could only be ordered in advance. I had not seen that on the website. The food was good but rather ordinary. The tea sandwiches were very plain and not original. The scones were good but I’ve definitely had better. They did serve my daughter a special cupcake for her birthday which was appreciated and she thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, I was slightly disappointed considering the price and the high reviews I’d read previously. It was a fun experience but if I wanted afternoon tea again I might try a different place.

Great Drinks & Food. Service is a little slow.

By Cindy H |

The bar is great! Drinks are great. Food is great. Service is a little slow if you are not at the bar. They were slow to take my order and I had to get someone's attention to order an additional drink and close out. I recommend sitting at the bar to avoid this.

Must go

By Fabi Crudele |

If you like good food, craft drinks, and an excellent ambience this is your place to go. I went for dinner on a Wednesday and it was very busy. The tables are well spread so they are not so close to each other, making it easy to hold a conversation. The lights are dim and the music is at the right level, creating a cozy atmosphere. The staff was ver professional and attentive, specially the floor manager, Sydney, which came several times to ask whether everything was as ordered or if I wanted anything else. She even told me about the place’s decor and was very knowledgeable on how the food is prepared. I would definitely recommend the burger! One of my favorite things about this place was the drinks. The menu has countless options for wine and whisky, as well as unique cocktails. The bartenders, Nick and Grover, were very friendly from the beginning and definitely knew what they were doing. I asked for a bartender’s choice and they did not disappoint with a 2-rum and Campari drink. They hit the nail on the head with the first drink so instead of choosing from the menu I just asked them, and I’m so glad I did. The bar was packed and they still made time to make me a very elaborated drink, which everyone wanted to try (called Breakfast Ramos in case you want to order it). I left feeling I should go back soon, and I have no doubt I will. The spot is perfect to relax, a hidden gem in midtown.

Lovely

The Whitby Bar is a lovely experience. Great conversation and drinks. The sidecar was pretty good. Though I'm partial to the one at my beloved namesake sidecar at the Penninsula Grill in Charleston. The decor is fun with very cool wicker basket. Surrounding the bar are a few tables and chairs. The bar food is pretty good too. Try the deviled eggs. All in all a great place. PS the hotel is awesome.

Save your money and go elsewhere for tea

By Brooke F |

Not impressed and would not return- tea service was not served appropriately and was over-saturated and low quality. The bites were basic and the quality of an unremarkable coffee shop. Service was bad and we had to wait 20mins with a reservation and were pushed to "upgrade our experience" and drink alcohol by multiple waiters. Interior design was out of a nightmare with like 10 motifs clashing all at the same time. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Indigestion!!!

By Carolyn B |

I so wanted to have a good experience at this beautiful venue, but it was really unacceptable. It was very crowded so i knew things might be slow which was ok, initially. First,my order was straightforward right off the menu, however, when it arrived it was completely wrong. I would have sent back but my waiter disappeared into thin air! I did finally ask for the salad which was supposed to come with my meal and was told it would be right out. Well, 15 minutes later, no salad. I finally ate what was served and another waiter said wrong order had been sent into ktchen. Then my salad arrived after I'd eaten what was served to me, whuch i sent back. I had also ordered dessert and coffee. I drank the entire carafe of coffee and 20 minutes later out came my lemon tart. I was seriously short on time at that point and took 2 bites and paid my bill. They did not charge me for my original order, only what I'd received. They also did not charge me for dessert or coffee. I appreciated that, too. But....overall I was really shocked at the service in this quite beautiful and pricey restaurant. Perhaps just an overwhelmingly bad night for them, but I definitely was not pleased.

Afternoon Tea Pleasant & Needs Work

By globaltravelkid |

High Points: the scones, the porcelain, the decor ambience Low Points: my rather absent-minded server brought me THREE tables' checks inside folder bill by mistake, and had charged all three to my card and then had to void and start again when I asked; the scones come warm but since they're served together on a tier they're bone cold by the time one finishes the sandwiches; ALL sandwiches have the SAME HARD (stale) white bread; unlike all other Firmdale Tea services (Covent Garden Hotel, et. al.) the scones aren't offered hot later, no sandwich refills offered, no tea refills or tea changes offered (I had to inquire about each of these); and no additional alcohol menu available at the table (had to inquire); no music; absolutely NOTHING British in the service or presentation of a supposedly British-inspired Firmdale signature tea; the pens are simple black dirty signature pens instead of a signature hotel pen; no QR menus to decrease touchpoints Unique Points: a lively hotel lobby atmosphere Food: 2 of 4 cakes were replicas of each other (pink and spice), the white merengue is a ball of just baked sugar (empty inside--it has wonderful potential to be a mini Pavlova if filled), and the tart was a strange combo of light mousse and dense heavy cheesecake; as there was NO salt or pepper on the table the egg salad was inedible; the bread for each sandwich is hard white and all the same; the Scones were the best scones this side of the Atlantic, though cold by the time I reached them after the sandwiches as they're all unfortunately served simultaneously on the tier Service: see above: "higgledy-piggledy" and quirky and full of errors (charging my table of one for adjacent families) Decor: it never changes: Kit's designs remain whimsical and steadfast and happy

Eye Captivating Environment With Solid Food.

By Conny Wylie |

The handsome Whitby hotel is home to the distinguished Whitby Bar & Restaurant, a centerfold NYC eating & drinking establishment. On the culinary scene, the decor is well dressed with an extraordinary ambience and unique design in the form of baskets strung from the ceiling encasing flamboyant curios. It sports it's American dishes that is offered through all dayparts and afternoon tea. The dinner menu showcases food fare such as: grilled fish & steak, beef bourguignon, ossobuco agnolotti and the like. I enjoyed a duo of Squash Soup and Dover Sole. On the bar front, the drink program serves an exciting cocktail menu of aperitifs as well as a complete list of inventive cocktails and accompanying small bites and more hanging baskets. This Bar & Restaurant is an eye captivating environment with solid food.

Good restaurant in midtown Manhattan (needs to improve hostess manners)

By seema60 |

I had made a reservation with a couple of friends in the restaurant as I had loved the food and ambiance when my daughter brought me here for Mother's Day. We arrived a little early and the restaurant seemed pretty empty but we were asked to wait at the bar. I found both the hostesses to be quite cold and unfriendly. When it was 1 PM we had to remind the hostess to seat us at the table. While taking us to the table, she was quick to remind us that we were only allowed to sit for 90 minutes. Now after this grand introduction, my friends were not very impressed with my choice of this restaurant. Fortunately, the food was again excellent and the cheesecake was also fantastic. We had burgers, fish and chips and the avocado and greens salad. I wish the hostesses are trained better to at least smile and learn how to convey information to guests. As far as the rest of the service was concerned it was pretty laid back and the waiters didn’t seem too concerned about this time limit.

Afternoon tea after Downton Abbey

By Emily E |

My mother, sister, and I enjoyed an afternoon tea after seeing the Downton Abbey exhibit. The tea was delicious and we shared the traditional tea selections of sandwiches, scones and desserts. It was good but wasn’t the best variety English tea selection of foods and teas. The staff were very attentive. I would recommend especially to continue the fun after the exhibit.

Great hotel

By andrea D |

Moved in after 2 disastrous nights at the Pierre. Fantastic rooms with attention to details, helpful reception and good location. Only negative was the service at the restaurants, way too slow and dizzy for the price tag and the setting.

Gorgeous haven in midtown

By Annette D |

This is such a beautiful place. The design, colour and ambience just make it so gorgeous, welcoming and peaceful. We came in for a drink on Saturday evening and then back for a drink at the bar and brunch on Sunday. I had the veggie burger which was delicious, and my cousin had the burger which she also loved. Washed it all down with champagne and finished with a desert that we really didn't have room for but figured we wouldn't be eating for 12 hours with our traveling. Terrific service from the whole team in the restaurant and bar. I would love to stay here next time we visit.

A bar to relax and unwind in

By MrLeggaiy |

The Whitby Bar, like the hotel, is a relaxed and chic sanctuary away from the hustle of 5th Avenue. The cocktails are fab, the bar menu is extensive (as is the restaurant menu) and the staff are always happy to oblige any request. Katie, the manager, is always on hand for advice or just to have a chat. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, pop in to this fabulous bar!

Bad Service, Rude Host & Receptive Ambiance

By GoldStandard1 |

Extremely bad service! Rude host first unable to find our reservation then tried ungraciously placing us in a squeezed corner table in an empty dining room. Waiter forgot food items, than said they would be complimentary but they still ended up on our bill. Extremely overpriced especially dealing with such unprofessional staff. The Whitby Bar & Restaurant has a long way to go before it will be know for any kind of standard other than good tasting over priced food and repetitive ambiance. I highly recommend eating at the newly refurbished Clement Restaurant at The Peninsula around the corner. They have much better service, views over Fifth Ave and delicious food for the same price! I will not go back to the Whitby.

Orangery Room!

By Ashely Fang |

Afternoon tea is often served in the hotel's orangery-inspired room, which is delightfully whimsical and charming. The decoration has clear nods to British imperialism with nautical dishes in an otherwise tropical room. Afternoon tea was delightful - it's not overly crowded and my partner and I enjoyed what we ordered. While the tea selection here is exactly the same as what their sister hotel (the Crosby Hotel) serves, the food is clearly different. The tiramisu was overly sweet, but I tolerated the remaining desserts and the sandwiches and scones were gobbled up immediately.

Do not trust this place and never go

By Kuo-Ning S |

Four of us went to Whitby for afternoon tea yesterday because the reviews are fantastic, but we were super disappointed after we actually went there. First of all, our waiter's aim was so bad that he missed one of our glasses and got the table wet, and he never came back to clean up the mess. Fine, things happen. But when we got our food, we realized that one of the legs of the food rack was bent badly and told the waiter but he insisted on trying to make it work. My friend bit into something like a fish bone in her sandwich, and it was pretty long. The waiter, Ray, took it and said he was going to ask the chef about it, and the manager, Matt, came back and told us it was cartilage, and said that it was a mix of meat and bone which can be eaten. When the tea came, it’s another waiter. I do not know his name. He never asked who had what tea, and just put the tea on the table. I specifically pointed at one pot and asked whether that was mine, and he said yes. After I finished my tea, I wanted to see the leaves and found out it was definitely not what I ordered because the leaves were obviously from Rooibos, which was not what I ordered. I asked Ray whether it was the wrong tea, and he kept telling me that it was the correct one without checking with the kitchen. After I told him that I was certain it was wrong, he took the pot to the kitchen and brought back a full pot of tea, telling me he had “filled the water” for me. But when I opened it, it wasn't the same leaves. The smell was different, too. While I still had the Rooibos tea leaves in my cup and the tea leaf filter, he just kept lying and telling me that it was the same. I asked him to look at the difference, but he just glanced at it, said “O yeah?” and walked away. He never apologized. There were many times that Ray just walked away from us while we were still talking to him. I am not sure how you educate your employees. Is it ok for your employees to lie to customers? Or do you think that Asians are more willing to put up with being mistreated? Highly disappointed. This was supposed to be a happy reunion but the entire experience ruined it. Do not trust this place! #disrespectingcustomers #lyingtocustomers #disrespectingAsians

Quiet place for a great lunch

By ferrarix75 |

Very good place to eat not far from 6th avenue We went there for lunch with colleagues and friends. The room is nice, the chair also and it is very quiet so enjoyable for New York because you can listen and speak with each other. Cocktails were pretty good I had one with raspberry and after we took a french wine a Pomerol Chateau Beausejour for 150$ which is ok for NY City. I had a burrata salad to start and then a chicken breast Burrata was good with a nice straciatella inside, tasty as it can be. Chicken was perfectly cooked. We spent a great moment sharing in this restaurant

Lovely High Tea

By Libby H |

My husband and I were in NYC for the Downton Abbey exhibit. We wanted afternoon tea afterwards and booked at The Whitby. The decor is charming and a little quirky. The tea and food were delicious. Excellent scones with clotted cream and jam. I highly recommend tea at the Whitby for a nice treat or celebration.

A Delightful Experience

By Johnathan E |

We went for afternoon tea and had an absolutely delightful experience, overall. The only drawback was the service was a little slow, especially in the beginning. The room was quaint and the table setting was beautiful, We had champagne and tea and all the savory and sweet treats. The tea sandwiches were fantastic but the plain scones did fall apart a bit. The tea selections were great. Had the service been a little more attentive at the beginning, I would have given this five stars. Definitely try it if you're looking for a reasonably priced afternoon tea experience in NYC.

If I could give MORE than 5 stars I would....

I brought a date here for brunch on 9/5/21, and had the best service I've ever experienced anywhere. I had sent a note via open table that this was a first date. We were late because of traffic, but were greeted cordially and warmly. We were discretely seated side by side at curved banquette in a corner of the main dining area (this felt like a special arrangement for us). The decor was eclectic and elegant, and the service was absolutely impeccable - very attentive without being obtrusive, and let us take our time. They clearly adjusted the pace of meal to the occasion. The food was well prepared and delicious -- the moules frites best I've had outside of France. Clearly, if they know you are coming for a special occasion, the staff here will treat you like royalty

Overrated Afternoon Tea and Hostess With Attitude

By Richard R |

We booked an afternoon tea primarily for my mother in law. The good news is the tea itself as well as the sandwiches and pastries were all quite good. However, this is also a fairly pricey afternoon tea and simply having good tea/food is not the entire experience. The hostess was absolutely rude. This is unacceptable. My wife made reservations for the afternoon tea but the hostess insisted she did not: she said my wife had made reservations for brunch. My wife showed her the receipt in the app for afternoon tea and the hostess claimed the app made a mistake. Come on. She then said she had to check to see if the restaurant had sufficient pastries to accommodate an afternoon tea. Really? With open table showing several openings for the ‘afternoon tea experience’ at this time. Rather than seat us or even suggest we wait at the bar, the hostess said we should sit in the lobby. It felt sorta like ‘get out and wait’. A hotel worker in the lobby who may have been the concierge sorta gave me a nod and smile when he saw what happened as if indicating ‘we have seen this before.’ More than anything though was her attitude about being bothered to do her job, her definitely stating untrue things and seemingly going out of her way to offend. This is the exact opposite of what a hostess should do. After about 5 minutes of waiting in a hotel lobby another hostess, who was a bit more pleasant in that at least she smiled, stated that the restaurant could accommodate us and were setting up a table. We were then seated in the back table of the bar area even though, at this time, the restaurant area had plenty of open tables. The service was ok enough. Not great though. initially we said we would have tap water rather than bottled water and they poured water into the water glasses. I then called the waitress over and said we would like a bottle of sparkling water. She came with the water, put the bottle in the table, and walked away. Our water glasses were filled. We did not have glasses for our bottled water. I got her attention and asked for three new water glasses which she gave to us. The Whitby had staff ask us if we would like hot water added to the tea pot. That was nice; however, when we asked for the hot water the waitress only filled about half the tea pot. I felt this was just not the type of service you would expect. At that point we really had had enough tea so we did not make an issue of it. The thing is the service at this afternoon tea spot was, to coin a term, spotty at best. Several people have written reviews about the hostess not being professional but otherwise giving the restaurant a good review of 4 or even 5 stars. This is unfortunate because part of the experience is having proper service and certainly not a ‘front of the house’ that immediately makes your visit uncomfortable. This is simply not how a restaurant should by run. The thing is NYC has many great options. I believe the actual tea and food were quite good. However, by itself, this is not the complete restaurant experience. Overall, I would say - given the total package -!you are better off choosing a different spot if you are looking for afternoon tea. If anyone in management is reading this, please note the various reviews mentioning issues with your hostess. This is an glaring area that could use improvement. a professional maitre would likely improve the experience.

Beautiful Design at a Price

By David F |

Was booked into the Whitby through work and the welcome and check-in were great. The room was a very good size (for NYC) and extremely well decorated, the bed was massive and super comfy. There was a floor to ceiling feature window which looked great, the only downside was that it was inside-facing and overlooked (good job I don't get embarrassed!). The bar was a different story, bartenders not making contact with guests, long time to make drinks and cocktails were pretty ordinary. This is nothing like their excellent sister hotel in London 'Ham Yard Hotel', where everything is excellent at every touch point. Recommend that the London team do some hospitality trading with the NYC team. With regards to the Whitby, they have to step up if they want to retain business.

You’ve done it again!

This husband / wife design team has added yet another standout property to their Firmdale Hotel collection. The Whitby is a lovely respite in the city. Beautifully appointed mixing classic, whimsical and modern oh so well. Thank you for being committed to lovely!

Exactly what you would expect from a Firmdale - perfection

By Victoria P |

I have been to a number of the Firmdale hotels in London and was very keen to visit the latest in New York, The Whitby. From the moment you walk in through the front door you are in the colourful world of modern British design. Pre dinner cocktails were in order and I had an Elderflower Collins which I would highly recommend if you like a vodka based drink. We were seated in the orangery as we requested a quieter area. It was very relaxed and had a wonderful aroma from the jasmine plants and eucalyptus leaves. The interiors are contemporary and exciting, exactly what you would expect from Kit Kemp and an absolute joy to be seated in. There is a lot of choice on the menu and I opted for the hot smoked pork chop, blackberry compote, asparagus with truffle mac and cheese and steamed Japanese sweet potato. It was amazing. English breakfast tea which was perfectly made and the best cup of tea I have had in the US in the 20 years I have been travelling there. That alone deserved a 5 star review. I can't wait to return the next time I am in New York.

Not recommended for Afternoon Tea

By Jennifer B |

Fun atmosphere but if you are a lover of high tea I would not recommended. We seek out new places for high tea in every city we visit. Sandwiches were soggy and scones were crumbly to the point of being dry. The service was considerably lacking. Had to try and flag someone down for everything we needed - more hot water, sweetener for tea, fresh tea cup, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary - No proactive check ins. Sat for more than 10 minutes before I was able to flag someone down to get started with water. It just got worse from there. Shame really. Perhaps the main menu is worth sacrificing service.

Good Brunch/lunch option

By CaseyMD |

Very cool place, art work and design. Pricey (my grapefruit juice was $12) but delicious. We had a great lunch and would not hesitate to return. Takes reservations but walk ups available for bar and lounge area which is what we did. Good service.

Big let down.

By Alison C |

I booked this restaurant for my Dad's birthday dinner on Open Table. I chose the Whitby Bar despite lukewarm reviews, as we had a large group (9 ppl + a toddler), which can be tricky at Christmas time in Mid-Town, we were booking last minute, and were going after the 4:30pm Rockettes Show. I received a call the day before our reservation to follow up with my note that this was a birthday celebration, and did we want anything special, i.e. a cake? I agreed, and thought this would make things extra special. Our reservation was for 7:15pm, and I called ahead to see if we could come a touch earlier as somehow our group was miraculously quick walking up from Radio City Hall, and they sat us close to 7pm. The restaurant / bar / hotel lobby has an artsy, euro-boho vibe, I thought very cute. The bar was bubbling, and felt the general ambiance was good.I was pleasantly surprised as its mid-town, and it did not seem touristy. However, once we ordered, it took quite some time for the first course to come out, and several rounds of bread were offered. My daughter started to get ancy for her pasta dish, and I had asked to bring it out first, it came after the first course. A few of us got the butternut squash soup, and it was tasty - however room temperature. I didn't send it back b/c I was wary of how long we had been sitting there. I did mention to our server (Orlando?) and he sort of barely acknowledged it. My brother had the burrata and said it was good - not amazing. The main course came a while after (20 min?) and my filet mignon was overcooked, and very dry. The bèrnaise lacked love. I felt it could have come out of a package. My uncle thought his pasta was also not fresh. We had waaaay too many sides, and we specifically asked the portion size before ordering. Several went untouched - they are decent portions folks! Especially b/c the food was very rich, one did not need 2 of everything. I did like the brussel sprouts,, however VERY rich. You only needed a bite or two. Consensus was the chicken dish was good. But again, just OK. At this point the entire group was exhausted, and ready to just get the check. A manager did come and ask if we were ready for the cake, so we decided to get coffees/teas and wait for the cake. But the cake never came. We waited another long period, where we were starting to get obviously irritated. Our daughter wanted to get up and move around too much, it was getting late, 9pm at this point. I asked the manager if we could just cancel the cake. It was taking entirely way too long, we appreciated the effort, but we just wanted to pay and leave. To which she seemed genuinely concerned

High Tea

By JackieBG7 |

Afternoon tea was a lovely compliment to the Downton Abbey exhibit. We savored flavorful tea and tasty treats in a relaxed and beautiful room. Impeccable service and attention to detail heightened the experience. Loved the biscuits! Best to make a reservation if you can. We plan to return soon.

Delightful tea, where details matter

By cbarney2003 |

To start —the setting is amazing. Everything from the China to the chairs to the art on the walls makes you feel like you’re in a lovely English estate. We were seated in the Orangerie section and it almost felt like being out on the patio. The menu has a nice choice offering a healthy tea (glutton free scones, veggie sandwiches) and a regular tea ( much better regular scones 😀 and delightful sandwiches and desserts.) So no matter who you were with, you’ll find something everyone can enjoy. Also I looked at a lot of teachers and the prices got a bit ridiculous. The whippy was reasonable. And you can add champagne do you arty if you like. The service was also attentive and they let us customize between the two menus without complaint. A definite must do.

Design is amazing!

By ddaschen |

We went there for afternoon tea that has just started this month. The design is so unique and I don't know how to describe it. So lovely! Only one thing we have to share was that we had to wait for 15 minutes for table set-up even though we had reserved a table then. But we are looking forward to coming back and hope the service would be improved.

Happy Hour the way it should be

By jclinden07 |

Love anything Kit Kemp designs. The bar & lounge area are fabulous ! Gorgeous bar, comfy table & chair sets & couches you don't want to leave.8 of us met here for the 1st time & we all will be repeat customers.Drinks & staff goes without saying 5 stars !

Not a $75 afternoon tea experience

By Madam_Zo_Zo |

As far as afternoon teas go, I cannot recommend this one. As soon as I walked in I was hit with the smell of fries. The seat I was given was covered in crumbs and the table was not set correctly for tea service. Food presentation was sloppy. The scones were dry and overly sweet. I couldn’t even get one from plate to mouth without it crumbling to pieces in my hand. The general restaurant interior design is great, bathrooms were clean and the staff were pleasant. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t a $75 experience and I won’t be going back.

Super fabulous but calm

By Franya Ruiz |

Lucky me I came on a Friday evening when they had a live Jazz band. The atmosphere is very nice and elegant very New York. I didn’t get to eat dinner but it looked lovely. I have bar food which was delicious so a definite indicator of the quality. Perfect spot for a drink, meeting after work. There were a good amount of people, all the seats were taken but it was not overcrowded which was perfect.

A gem

By Jess |

This little bar is lovely. Friendly staff. Easy location. Beautiful ambiance. Stop by for a coffee or a cocktail.

Pretty inside but the food highly priced.

By aweiss00 |

We thought we booked the Sunday brunch but it was not served until 11 am. So I had two eggs and potatoes and my friend had bagel and lox and we both had coffee and it was 60 dollars. Toast wasn’t edible. The food was good but so expensive for an ordinary breakfast. Nice atmosphere and staff was friendly but slow.

LOVELY HIGH TEA - VERY SLOW SERVICE

By Megan S |

Went to the Whitby Hotel for High Tea in conjunction with the Downton Abbey Exhibition - through Viking today. Arrived on time for the High Tea. The Host said our table was ready but he would just check - 10 minutes later the host returns . He took us to the table where we sat for at least 15 minutes until a waitress asked if we had been served. No! So she took our order for tea and the High Tea. Another 15 minutes and the tea was delivered, then another at least 5 before the food was placed on the table. Whilst we sat and drank and chatted, another hostess arrived to ask if we had been told what we had on the 3 tiers. No again. So she kindly explained the various sandwiches, scones, and little sweets. Lovely. The food was delicious. Unfortunately we couldn't say that the service was great. I see that other reviews say the service was impeccable - so maybe they were having an off day - but it really was extremely slow, especially as they were not all that busy. Plenty of staff though. Probably took almost an hour all up before we actually were seated, had our tea and the food. We didn't stay in the hotel, only went for the afternoon tea. It did look like a nice hotel though.

High Tea

I was here for afternoon tea following the Downton Abbey exhibit. It was wonderful! Service was flawless, tea was robust and the treats were delightful. We took our time and really enjoyed ourselves and would love to come back.

Excellent food and atmosphere; service needs help

By ZZ12404 |

I took a party of five to the Whitby Bar and Restaurant. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks.... and waited and waited. Dinner order was taken, however, entrees took a while to arrive, as did the bill. Food was great and my guests enjoyed it. (Apps: Hamachi gazpacho, beef tatare. Mains: grilled black bass, scallops, snapper, and waygu steak frites). Drinks were good when they arrived and a wide wine list selection. I'd go back to give the slow service a second chance, but this time it took a while. Servers were all friendly and attentive, when you got their attention.

Wonderful ambience!

By LRNADUNE |

Stopped here for a post-work drink with two coworkers around the holidays. Amazing ambience, great service, and in general had the spirit of a place I can’t wait to visit again.

Fun afternoon tea for a rainy day

By wanderlussed |

Fun for a rainy day! The food was superb, especially the scones which were cooked perfectly! The savory sandwiches were good and the desserts had very nice flavors. Presentation was decent, with pretty China, but the tiered tray was wobbly and very crooked. Everyone was friendly and service was polite, if a little haphazard - the menus stayed on our table after ordering, we had to ask for forks and there was a mix-up with our check at the end. Try not be seated at the back of the room, otherwise you're in a high trafficked area by the bathrooms. We didn't feel rushed and the atmosphere was nice, relaxed but elegant.

Exquisite breakfast

Really a very nice place to have a leisurely breakfast. Excellent food, lovely smoothies, beautiful china and silverware, great service!

A TOTAL disappointment

By patriciaDubai |

My husband and I arrived for a Sunday brunch 10 minutes before our booking time (we booked 3 weeks in advance) and we were taken to a table in the back dining. Everything started at this point : a waiter comes and tell us we have to leave the table after 1,30 hours (we didn’t even order!!), then 3 times we were asked to change table because there was a big group arriving. We didn’t want to move because we would be between 2 big groups, so the noise would be unbearable and we wanted to be able to talk. After asking for the manager, we were “allowed” to stay, at that point 30 minutes already passed. We were surprised that the tables by our side were not clean (even with Starbucks coffee). Finally our food arrived and what a disappointment ! I order eggs benedict (the ham was so hard I couldn’t at it) and my husband ordered English Breakfast which was very bland. He wanted hash browns but they ran out of them ..I order a drink with hibiscus, they also ran out of it. At that point we wanted to leave. At the door we asked the bellboy to fetch a taxi for us, told us there was a couple before us, the couple got their taxi and the bellboy disappeared, we waited for 15 minutes in the street and we gave up. We left. Terrible service !! Not only in the restaurant but the bellboy as well. Maybe we had bad luck BUT it shouldn’t happen in a 5 star hotel. Beautiful setting and decoration but that’s all. We wanted to try the brunch to book the hotel for our next visit in January. We won’t be coming back nor recommend it to anyone.

Trendy place in midtown for afternoon coffee

Nice atmosphere for social catch up. Many trendy people and popular social place ( therefore not ideal for business gathering which requires more privacy ). We didn’t try the food, but perfect place for afternoon coffee.

Disappointing Christmas visit

We visited for dinner on Christmas Day. I realize that it’s a premium date for eating out but the food served was very disappointing at the price tag. The pate starter was tasteless and dry. The turkey was moist but came without vegetables and the pudding portions were small. An occasion such as this should be really special.

Great atmosphere and excellent carbonara

By Mark |

We had a wonderful family dinner here. The space is nicely decorated, with a skylight and a lot of beautiful art, and the service was very good. The carbonara with spaghetti squash and mushrooms was delicious.

Wonderful delight

We came on holiday from the UK and my father had always wanted to see live jazz. We were going to go to a place called Dizzy's but found out it was closed for the entire week. It was only as we were walking down the street from our hotel to visit Trump Tower that we walked past this place and saw a sign outside advertising that they had live jazz the following night; we booked to go. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely waitress, a Korean lady, Yung?probably spelling her name here appallingly bad. She went out of her way to help us get a seat near the music as my dad was in a wheelchair. She was so friendly and funny and had lots of conversations with us. The place was great but she was the one that made our evening as wonderful as it was. There is a huge variety of drinks and watching the bar tender make cocktails is a treat in itself.

Adore!

By Stylelust |

When you need a spot of British style and good cheer....breakfast is fabulous, lunch is easy, tea is delightful, drinks with tasty treats.....terrific. I simply adore this spot. We find it really easy to walk to and impossible to taxi to because it is just across from Trump Tower on 56th Street with the street traffic going east. Often, the 56th street between Fifth and Madison is closed so cars pile up between Fifth and Sixth - so just walk. I am a wonderful celebrity spotter and have noticed lots of Emmy, Tony and I think she won an Academy or two....certainly has won our hearts in a dozen movies, activity. For the most part, this is a CHIC spot. If you look like crap and plan to open up your computer - please do not ruin this spot. This is for those who are stylin! Check out the baskets and other art....lots of eye candy. And please use the host or hostess for seating. You'll get quicker service.

Great Find!!!

By C L |

We were invited here for dinner - and were very pleasantly surprised. The hotel and restaurant had only been open for a week and it has this wonderful ambiance. The décor is funky, fun and very tastefully done with wonderful fabrics and fun artwork flanking the walls. Their menu has some very nice selections and what we ordered was delicious. Service was very attentive.

Shortlist for midtown finer dining

By IvyDad |

What a beautiful entry through the bar to the enchanting, welcoming dining room! Food options, preparations, and taste did not disappoint. I give a strike for less than stellar service. We were looking around for some attention too often and for fine dining at this level, I expect the wine to be refilled by the well tipped staff.

Inconsistent with Service

By Verdi17 |

After spending 4 nights at the wonderful Crosby Hotel in Soho we moved to a five star hotel in Mid Manhattan for another 7 nights. We had 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts at the Whitby because we were so impressed with the ambiance of these hotels. Unfortunately the service is just not there yet. We had to repeat our requests and errors were made, as well as the meals the second time round not being as great. This may be teething but needs fixing. It was almost as though the staff were in training. A little disappointing compared to the wonderful warm and friendly staff we had at the Crosby. Let's say I wouldn't want to stay at the Whitby until these customer service issues are fixed. The hotel is lovely and worth another try.

Average fare with service that lags for a premium restaurant

By synToronto |

Location: At the front of the Whitby hotel, the bar and restaurant is a long space that looks very comfortable and inviting. It has windows at the front but no view of anything in particular. Food: We came for the afternoon tea service with friends. The food offerings that accompany tea are always a nice treat to look forward to in terms of how each establishment prepares and presents. Although we had heard this was a good place to come for tea service, we found it to be of average quality. Service: Service was inconsistent and not always fast or attentive. Not what I would expect from a luxury hotel. Overall: Not to be overly harsh, but the rating relative to the reputation of the hotel is just average. If you want something more memorable, you might have to go elsewhere.

Whitby Bar Restaurant Fails all expectations

By randybrands |

We were at Whitby and had late lunch / tea in the Whitby restaurant. There were six of us. They seated us in a lovely table l in the beautiful back room. The service was inattentive, impersonal and poor. The first two wines we ordered were not available. When the third bottle arrived , some of our meals were already on the table. Most of us thought the food was mediocre. Nobody thought their food was great. I ordered my burger medium rare. It arrived (last dish brought to the table) and it was cooked well done. It was gross. I sent it back , and the second one arrived after all the others at my table I was hosting,, were finished eating. Disappointing , my second burger was also very over-cooked. I did not eat it after the first bite. The server was nowhere to be found. A while later a server asked if we wanted dessert, noticed my meal was not eaten and said was it not good? I said no. It was again well done and not medium rare as I requested. I hosted a $500 lunch and didn’t even get to have lunch! Plus they took the burger off the bill but still charged an automatic 20% service fee. The service was horrible as was the food. The room however is very pretty. I will probably not ever go back to the Whitby hotel or restaurant.

Great space, substandard service

By connectedkeith |

My wife and I ate breakfast here after a long trip into the City. The space was absolutely stunning - open and airy. But, unfortunately, like a sister hotel we stayed in London last year, there service was really, really bad. It took forever to get our meal, get a simple glass of water, and we just didn't really receive even the most basic attention from the wait staff. Two people - dressed like management - just stood at the front of the house talking while the others were working their hearts out cleaning tables, serving, etc. The food wasn't very good and the price was too high. In terms of impressive space - 5 stars. But service, food and value were no where near acceptable.

Great for Instagram, but not for a meal

By Flyer760711 |

Nice design and decor but very disappointing food. To start off, the bread they served was severely undercooked, effectively raw in center. Scallop crudo appetizer was very unbalanced - very excessive use of truffle oil (I like truffles) and high acidity rendered the scallop almost irrelevant. For mains, we had the lobster risotto and the halibut. The risotto was undercooked (not "al dente") and relatively bland and the lobster was very chewy and not flavorful. The halibut was served over cooked blueberries and topped with mushrooms, but the dish was not integrated. The fish itself was very dry and nothing and the components were not complimentary. For dessert, we had three sorbets, a cheese platter and a glass of sauternes. The sorbet and cheese were tasty but unmemorable. The sauternes was served in inappropriate glassware and had a tremendous amount tartrate crystals in the glass (like they served the dregs of a bottle). Nothing was inedible, but neither was it well made. You could have a much better meal for 25% of the price in Manhattan.

Slightly disappointing restaurant

By Tibby Elmwood |

Friendly staff, nice decor but I found the food a bit too fussy - too many flavours going on with every dish I had. I appreciate that everyone has different tastes but I was a bit disappointed if I’m honest as I’ve eaten at some of the Group’s London hotels/restaurant which have always been good.

Love afternoon tea. Sadly this was average.

By Donna S |

Note: I went to this Hotel for Afternoon Tea. I did not stay at the hotel. This hotel had a 5 star rating. The lobby alone screams 'why'? As stated, I did not stay here so I did not see the rooms. However, I did have Afternoon Tea service. Before booking, know they allot 90 min per tea reservation. The room was quaint but the tables are too close together. The waiter was on top of us as soon as we sat down. I let that go knowing there was a 90 min time limit. Having done many afternoon teas in my lifetime, this was average at best. The tea turned bitter rather quickly. I had an English breakfast, friend had an herbal. They did not stay hot either. Being a scone aficionado (self-proclaimed), I was most excited for the scones. They were crumbly and dry. The clotted cream was decent. The sandwiches are all spreads (salmon spread, cucumber spread, chicken spread). If you are expecting bites of salmon, cucumber, or chicken, you will not find. The sweets were not visually appealing to me (and I am a sugar lover) so I only tried one; the chocolate shell with hazelnut mousse was decent. In the end, they did not chase us out at the end of 90 min. With tip, this is a $150 pp experience if you have the champagne. They can do better.

Not Nearly As Good As You Might Think

By Michael S |

I was extremely excited to have afternoon tea at The Whitby, especially after it had recently been awarded 3 Michelin Keys, the new rating system by Michelin for hotels. Upon walking into the beautifully decorated boutique hotel, the restaurant and bar areas were completely full as was the room for afternoon tea. The carefully curated menu and selection of teas were enjoyable. I recommend the lemon verbena tea. Unfortunately, The Whitby's afternoon tea didn't live up to expectations. The room was much too crowded, and the tables were so close to each other. My partner and I had to pull out the table for him to get in; and I didn't appreciate learning the entire life stories of the people on each side of me because we were seated so closely. Also, and I really hate to write this, the bread on the finger sandwiches was stale. I literally made this booking precisely 30 days out (the earliest you can book) because I was so excited after having seen The Whitby, Crosby and Warren Street properties online. I've been to high teas all around the world, and this one was definitely a 3/5.

Beautiful High Tea

By megah118 |

Beautifully appointed restaurant. Lovely Wedgewood china service. Very accommodating and polight waitstaff. The food however was lacking in flavor and was overpriced for what we got. We had the typical 3 tiered tray of tea sandwiches, scones (that were very dry and tasteless), and asstd. mini desserts. We had to pay extra to be able to choose from some flavored teas instead of the 3 standard ones.

Big Birthday

By Mary F |

When a women comes to town ...and meets up with a bestie girlfriend to celbrate a big birthday..where else do you go but to the Whitby Hotel Bar to celbrate. Without us telling the waitress our reason for having drinks and apps... she brought out a cupcake with a candle and sang to us. That the wow factor. Food amazing..great cocktail menu..but the atmosphere very eclectic ... Thanks for the good wishes.

Loved the Afternoon Tea Experience

By jandc8491 |

My wife and I traveled to NYC to see the Downton Abbey exhibit. Afterwards we joined our daughter for afternoon tea at the Whitby Hotel at her suggestion. There are different tea packages you can choose, including one with champagne. You can upgrade the tea choice as well. The sandwiches and other "finger food" were delicious. We were not rushed. Our server Jackie B was friendly and helpful with suggestions.

Delightful atmosphere& Delicious food & Very good service

By Poshtraveller747 |

I visit NY very often and been to many restaurants. However I discovered The Whitby bar & restaurant during my latest visit. Atmosphere is great. Food is delicious. Honestly the steak was the best in NY! And I ate steak in many restaurants such as, Del Frisco, Ben & Jack's, The Grill and The Capital Grill..The service is very nice. The staff is friendly and helpful. I strongly recommend The Whitby bar & restaurant. You'll love it. Also try the NY steak you won't regret it:)

Lively, beautiful and delicious!

Great dinner and brunch menus; the waiters are excellent; the decor is beautiful and fun; the bar is hopping!

VERY HIP AND A BIT OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

By keneri1 |

I had lunch there with a friend. She lives in NY and picked the Whitby because it was a bar/restaurant that was quiet and you didn't have to yell to speak to people in your party. I had to wait in the lobby of the Whitby Hotel. It is the coolest lobby. Very eclectic furnishing and art. An amazing clock as well as all the decor from the lighting to the chair upholstery. The restaurant was equally cool and beautifully appointed. The bathrooms are so unusual with a fish motif and Campbell soup can art. They also have a large party room that has the most interesting light fixture. I would recommend this little gem to all the cool kids! Would definitely return.

The Best Thing About Our Visit

By SteveScardina |

My husband and I had breakfast at this location and were very disappointed. Although the atmosphere was very elegant the dining experience did not match the ambience. The table cloth was soiled from previous guests, the food was ok and the service was not what it should be when paying close to $100 for 2 for breakfast. My egg white scramble with avocado and crab was tasty but lacked the crab. I guess it was made the way I like my martini very dry - just wave the dry vermouth bottle over the glass. The rye bread toast was delicious but served cold and the restaurant was out of pork sausage and their juicer was not working. Very disappointing that in a city that never sleeps management did not address these issues. The best thing about the visit was the hostess Holly. A person who understands the concept of a memorable guest experience! She made the visit worth it’s while! Go to Ma Pêche across the street in the Chambers Hotel - that’s what we should have done!

A GREAT option in Midtown

By NYCDesign78 |

The Whitby is a fantastic option for lunch. In midtown, you get stuffy banker restaurants, can't-hear-yourself over shrill ladies who lunch or almost empty restaurants that really focus on dinner. The Whitby is a most welcome exception. Quirky but enjoyable decor. Polite and attentive staff. Excellent food. And enough going on while still being able to have a conversation.

This is a very nice place, if a bit pricey.

By Rochelle F |

We had a very nice lunch at this restaurant. Met a friend who I have not seen in quite a while. The ambience is lovely and the portions were large. I had the mediterranean salad and added grilled chicken - 2 large pieces of chicken were included (although for $48 I guess they should provide a large portion but not everywhere does). We ended up sitting next to the Hotel Manager Michael and the General Manager Kathrin who were both so friendly and fun to chat with. Clearly we all have a passion for travel as this was a topic we discussed with great enthusiasm. They also came around with a taste of a dessert - small cones with gelato as a little treat. Really a wonderful touch.

Just ok

By Scottishperson |

I love having afternoon tea and when we were visiting NYC and meeting up with a friend I researched them. Lots you needed a mortgage for ! The Whitby looked nice and with a glass of champagne it was $60 plus tax each, so I booked it before travelling for three of us. Not impressed I have to say ! Sandwiches - not fresh bread, Scones - delicious, Cakes bite size - only one I liked was the tiny raspberry tart. The staff was lovely I have to say, especially Stewart from Orkney who had lived in Edinburgh (our home town), very friendly. Stewart if you are in Edinburgh try The Balmoral Hotel to see how to do Afternoon Tea, spectacular !

First night and amazing food

We had just arrived in New York and had to get used to the environment. We had 3 yellow fin tuna steaks with side dishes of french fries, caramelized carrots and potatoes with herbs. Just delicious!

Afternoon Tea at the Whitby

By JudyMetroNYCarea |

After calling to make a reservation for 2 for tea and being told no reservations available, we took a chance and showed up hoping they had an open table. In fact, we were told they hold a certain amount of tables for hotel guests, for priority seating. The restaurant was about half full so we got a table but then switched tables again so we were not in the center of the room. The wait staff was fine. The tea was fine. The sandwiches were basic, the scones were the best part of the tea, even more than the desserts. But for $45 per person, it could have been a bit better. The nice part was that we were not rushed from the table. The restaurant never got full but there was a steady stream of small parties in and out of the restaurant. The decor is unique and interesting. Was it nice? Yes. Would I go back? Probably not.

A lunch haven -

By Passionflower200050 |

When you need a break from shopping or the museums this is a lovely place to relax and have some "healthy" food when traveling. The service is great and the decor so typically Kit Kemp (as it should be!) A very comfortable place to feel as if you are away from the tourists.

Love!

What a great place! Wonderful location, excellent service, great menu.... I will definitely be back soon.

Excellent service and food

By Thomas |

A gem of a location in Midtown to meet friends or have a business dinner. The Whitby is a quaint and charming oasis in the hustle and bustle of New York. Entrees are expertly prepared, service staff is very attentive.

always tastes better on the company card

By christian m |

Large group of folks after the Paley Center event. Drinks and a bunch of apps. Wine was delicious (pretty expensive though) didnt really like the wine glass - more of a flaggon and not a great pour. Think we got most of the apps on the menu. Baby tacos delicious Fried shrimp - best thing we had. Chacueterie board - I've had better Sliders - a little dry but I came to them late in the adventure and cold hamburger is never really anyone's idea of a good time. Very elegant setting - directly across from MOMA - comfy chairs, pro service. If in midtown central park south area you could do a lot worse than this.

Really bad service

By pt0 |

Lovely room, terrible service on every level. Got the food wrong, forgot dishes, but most horrifying leaned over the table everytime and dropped the plate in front of those sitting across. Had dinner with a fairly large party and for every course either someone was missing food, or was served the wrong dish. During dessert people were suffering through what they thought they ordered only to discover that someone else had received their dessert. Cant say enough about how the poor service ruined the meal. Would not return.

Excellent cocktail bar

By Chris M |

Excellent cocktails and wine. They make their own marmalade at the bar to flavor drinks. They can make you any drink you like with the marmalade’s as flavor. Great atmosphere and very friendly and attentive but not overly wait staff. The food isn’t special but good. The atmosphere and bar makes up for it all. Great place not too crowded.

Post-Show Cocktails and Dinner... Divine

By Jill S |

After a recent matinee, my friend and I had a lovely time in the bar area of the Whitby... it is worth walking over! The service and maître d' were charming and the people watching is as fabulous as the cocktail menu. We stayed for hours and truly enjoyed ourselves...if you are looking for something chic, yet friendly with a gorgeous decor and within walking distance of most Manhattan activities, head to the Whitby Bar! You'll love it.

Simply wonderful afternoon tea experience! Cheerio!

By Lisa M |

Perfectly "splendid" Afternoon tea after the Downton Abbey Exhibition!!!! We felt transported to England and saved the airfare! Our compliments to wonderful chefs preparation of delicious scones and authentic clotted cream and scrumptious ginger sandwiches! Our favs were the salmon and cucumber...the buffalo chicken was a bit hot but if you enjoy that it compliments the coolness of the cucumber sandwich...the desserts were phenomenal and of course the English breakfast tea was sensational. Be sure to book the Afternoon tea before 5pm...4:00 or 4:15 or earlier is great they switch to dinner mode at 5pm. Special shout out to our lovely waitresses! Young and Leanna..their warmth and exceptionally attentive service and personalities made the experience even more enjoyable! Thank you for great management! Scotland and England very well represented! Enjoy the experience! We're going back soon!! The Cosby is located downtown --a sister restaurant--so we will try that too!

Whitby Hotel Bar

Very lively & busy holiday bar. Reservations necessary to get a small table in the bar. Lots of action as patrons enjoy festive atmosphere as XMAS approaches. Recommend this location for small groups, but noise level is extremely high.

Pretty space

By Kenneth Pages |

We went for brunch one day. The hotel and restaurant area are very nice/pretty. We even thought about staying here next time we visit the City. It wasn't busy and we got there as the brunch buffet part was coming to an end and they were about to dismantle the Buffett Bar. The server was nice enough to still offer us that as an option before they actually dismantled it. We ordered from the menu. I had a frittata and Ryne had the American Breakfast. I would characterize the meal as average +. My Bloody Mary was so full of particulates I had to ask them to have the bartender strain it. After we had our meal we really didn't see our server again. I had to ask a passing manager to bring the check. Other than the inattentiveness at the end I would say The Whidby Restaurant is good for a quick bite at Breakfast or Lunch or perhaps a drink at the bar.

Beautiful restaurant with gorgeous antique china on the walls. Food was quite good and the back room is quiet!

By Pepper |

Ok, so like most fancy New York restaurants , you pay alot here. But the food is good and the waiters are nice. We got to talking and basically closed the room down- but no one hurried us. We had appetizers- very good Burrata, a strange Cauliflower dish, a very good Tuna tartar and a nice gazpacho. The room was big and blessedly quiet compared to the really noisy bar. We finished off with very good chocolate icecream. With one drink apiece the bill came to 80 plus dollars a piece. And that is without any main dish. Still, I like the ambiance and they seem to care about giving you a good experience.

Fawlty Towers

By donna792 |

My daughter and I booked The Whitby restaurant for our Christmas dinner on Christmas Day . We arrived to a busy restaurant and shown to our table for two which was squished between two other tables for two . We were then left to our own devices for some time before we were given menus or offered drinks. Had a good look round to see what resembled Xmas decorations and spotted a Xmas tree with lights on in the far corner behind glass doors in another room , so not very Christmassy. No effort made for the event, crackers at the tables , Xmas tunes etc ..(it’s the small things that make a difference). Anyway , we eventually got to order our drinks from a surely waiter which then took an age to arrive . We noticed other people complaining about the wait times in between courses . Service was hilariously bad. Every course ordered took some time to arrive . Just as well we had ordered a bottle of wine as we needed it to keep the hunger at bay . The food was tasty when it did arrive , quite rich, but enjoyable . We ordered desserts which took 20 mins to arrive and when it did arrive the order was wrong. My daughter had a word with the head lady running the show about the service that day . Not sure but we think we saw the waiter leave . We had another 20 min wait to get what I ordered and when it did arrive , no apologies offered for the wait. All in all the service seemed to be terribly disorganised . Different waiters attending our table , not really understanding what was going on. I don’t think the restaurant has been open long, and they’re obviously experiencing a few teething problems, which then became our problem on Christmas Day . Maybe take a look at how Avra Estiatorio does it so very well . Good luck .

Afternoon tea

By Road573294 |

Am writing this review directly from our table for two. We have not had a visit from our waiter in over 30 minutes. About a half an hour ago we had to ask for more hot water. There was enough clotted cream served for perhaps 2 scones, but definitely not for 4. We asked for one more salmon finger sandwich and were embarrassed to see all the commotion it caused at the waiter station. He came back to say there would be a charge. I said no problem. Then I was brought 4 finger sandwiches. The cucumber sandwiches had thick chunks of cucumber, the meat sandwich was the consistency of canned dog food. The scones were delicious. The service was possibly the worst.

Stunning design. Each corner tells a story. So classy - tried breakfast there and the level of food and service was excellent.

Not an equal opportunity establishment

By Maxime K |

I gave this one star because that was the only option to leave a review. WARNING: This is not an equal opportunity establishment. We made a reservation three weeks ahead and our table outside was given away to in their words “priority hotel guests who pay thousands of dollars to be here” and proceeded to let us know our reservation wasn’t important. Getting no notice of this when we called this morning to confirm our reservation and calling us at 12:54 when we have 1:00 reservations and are already outside parking is unacceptable. It would have been nice to know this was their policy when we made this reservation for my birthday, I would never give my money to any place like this that makes you feel like you are garbage for not paying thousands of dollars to stay at the hotel. My sister is 8 months pregnant and eating inside poses health risks to her which is why it was so important to get the table outside in the courtyard. They were rude and had no compassion about the situation. Thanks for ruining my birthday.

They’ve done it again

By Neil |

Tim & Kit Kemp have done it again with this sister hotel to The Crosby. I often come here to drink in the interior details and great service; so much more authentic than a big format hotel. Have used the restaurant for both casual and business dinners. Great menu and I’d recommend one of the signature cocktails to get you going - ‘Smokey Old Fashioned’!

Lunch at Whitby only..can speak for rooms

Food was actually quite ok..overpriced but in a nice setting..however the service was dismal..wrong sequence of orders,no bread despite repeated attempts..no silverware fro 2nd course despite repeated attempts..wine order forgotten..etc..

Gorgeous spot for Afternoon Tea

This British hotel chain knows how to do a proper afternoon tea. What a treat! Went with my son and tried the authentic version, as well as the healthy one. One order with two pots of tea would have been perfect, and we are good eaters. Spoiled my appetite for dinner later but so worth it!

Excellent Service, Atmosphere and Food

By LynnSunshine |

Our favorite meal on our New York trip. The food is amazing, every course was delightful. We even ordered an extra dessert after dessert just to try something more! The service also made the experience for us. We were traveling with teenagers and our server (Brittany?) was very helpful in explaining the different dishes to them and made us feel extremely welcomed. Our daughter tried the squid ink pasta for the first time and loved it. I would suggest this to other families who are traveling to NYC and want to have an amazing food experience while feeling welcomed in a gorgeous and unique atmosphere.

Best Bar for Afternoon Happy Hour

AFTERNOON TEA with Much for the Eye & the Palate to Savor

By VKMc |

SPLENDID HIGH TEA—Tucked in nearby Fifth Avenue below Central Park & around the corner from MOMA, the WHITBY HOTEL is a delightfully stylish surprise. The creation of Tim & Kit Kemp, the public rooms abound with strikingly contemporary art & unusual pleasing textures. Their lovely TEA ROOM features a bouquet of diverse design elements—Orientalist Kilim fabric wallpaper copied into the menus, mix 'n' match Chinoiserie platters framed together as wall art & a fascinating display with dozens of white vases used as soft lamps, each deep-etched with examples of beloved Manhattan architecture. All this is topped off with a pair of mammoth chandeliers worthy of a hunting lodge hung beneath each end of a lofty skylight & mountains of hydrangeas snookered into the corners—quite a cheerful & delicious pastiche. EXCELLENT HIGH TEA is a bit pricey, but the Plaza charges half again more. Comfortable seating & lovely china, linens & stemware make this a pleasant oasis for afternoon conversation & savory treats. AFTERNOON TEA arrives steeping in English pots with a silver tea strainer & bowl provided for each cup & a bounty of tasty miniatures served on the traditional three-tiered stand, with plates of tea sandwiches & then pastries & then scones—no clotted cream as advertised, but good butter & jam. Really quite wonderful smoked salmon & lemon crème fraîche in the sandwiches, though rather quotidian roast beef, more horseradish cream would have suited. But both the passion-fruit & the raspberry pavlova on the pastry plate had us guessing what on earth was this yummy treat.

Healthy Afternoon Tea

By Alan M |

Well- I was blown away by the decor and the fact it was British gave me some assurnce they knew something about afternoon tea. My husband order the regular which was good and the best Earl Grey Tea he has had but the healthy version was done with great care. It missed the mark in terms of not having vegan cheese when they even bake their own non gluten bread. Scones too hard and I stole a bite of my husband's- yummy. Tea selection very limited with alot of tisanes. Great service!!

Amazing Afternoon Tea

By Sheila R |

I went here after visiting the Downton Abbey exhibit. We had a reservation and arrived early, but that wasn’t a problem. We were seated right away. Our waiter was wonderful. So friendly. He explained the menu, the china and the hotel to us. Everything was perfect. The scones were the best I have had. Served warm with jams and clotted cream. It was so much food. I can’t wait to return.

Awful experience for what could be a hip spot

By TC GREN |

Stopped by here at 9:45pm on a Friday evening as it was highlighted as a ‘cool’ bar to visit in a news article. Air conditioning was great as it was hot outside, music was nice with some jazz, drink options on the menu were plentiful. Decor was blah (wicker baskets over the bar) for an area that should be more upscale. Initially took a couple minutes to find someone to seat us even though bar was not busy at all. After drink orders taken, it was 15 minutes before delivered to us. We finished the first drink and were looking to try and get someone’s attention for 15 minutes for a second drink. In fact, nobody stopped by at any time during the first drink to confirm it was ok or check if we wanted anything else. This lack of service was despite 4-5 staff chatting beside doorway to kitchen and 1 guy straightening chairs ‘just perfectly aligned’ for about 10 minutes and then dancing through the middle of the bar. They all appeared more ready to finish for the night than serve guests. Finally we flagged down a woman who I think was more aligned to the hotel and we said we were not happy with service and just wanted to close the bill. She went to the back and the bar manager returned. Manager took our feedback and apologized, gave our bill, didn’t offer to discount or offer additional drink or free drink in the future. After returning from the restroom I heard the manager arguing with the guy (in the middle of the bar) who had been straightening chairs and he pointed in our direction and was trying to claim no accountability for it. A) if staff are not busy, they should socialize in private areas if allowed during work time B) the staff were not being monitored C) the customer was not accommodated D) the reprimanding of the employee was valid and timely but done in full earshot of customers Will not be back.

Another great Firmdale Hotel

There breakfast is wonderful. They have all different types of choices and are so accommodating with regards to your food. I would definitely recommend this place for a business breakfast or lunch. The environment is simply charming.
