Decent food but limited selection

By GlamperGirl |

There was an extremely limited selection for a vegetarian but the kitchen did make two dishes without meat for us. Not a huge menu. Good service and average prices. Dumplings, noodles and shu mai were good, but the red bean dessert was awful.

Hong Kong Dim Sum in NYC

By sengkongt |

It was a rainy Wednesday evening that my wife I chanced upon this outfit while braving the heavy rain. Service was briskly served by young Chinese descent lads. Knew their jobs n menu pretty well. We ordered pork porridge, chicken rice n siew mai, beef balls, rice rolls, bean curd roll. At ~$6 per dim sum portion, they were decent by local standards but certainly few notches below Hong Kong or Singapore. Porridge serving was small but quite good. Chicken rice with meat that resembles "pull pork" style not the boned in full taste chicken parts. Pretty decent compared with Chinese foods I tasted in other cities

Don't miss the eggplant dim sum

By David M |

We had the beancurd wrapped meatballs...just OK...the pan fried noodles...pretty good...and the egg plant and shrimp dim sum...fabulous!!! Come early as they run out of the egg plant dim sum.

Superb Dim Sum

By John V |

My lunch at Tim Ho Wan was all that I expected. I started with their Hot and Sour Soup with Shrimp Wontons, a great combination of two totally different soups that really worked well. To that, I added an all-time favorite, Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf, along with three dumpling offerings. Throughout the meal, their Hong Kong roots showed through. Tim Ho Wan is the home of dim sum excellence. Service was brisk and friendly, with the wait staff attentive but not hovering. Prices weren’t bad, given both the location and the quality of the food. I might have to go back tomorrow.

The BEST Chinese dim sum

By foodie8882018 |

Super high quality authentic dim sum at reasonable price! The steamed chicken rice is too die for! No reservations - so avoid peak hours

Dim sum staples

By Heartspunk |

Initially, I was a tad skeptical as it looked and sounded (loud dance music blaring) too trendy to be authentic. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Not an extensive menu but you get a decent choice of dim sum staples such as lotus leaf rice, dumplings, turnip cake but no steamed BBQ pork buns.

Insert Superlatives Here...

I've been enjoying dim sum for decades, and was prepared to be underwhelmed when I saw that this was a 'chain' restaurant. What's here is a rather short menu.... BUT... First off, the pan fried radish cake struck me as ' best in town'. This being the Devil's Kitchen branch, "the town" is NYC, so that's no small feat. The show stopper for me was the sticky rice in lotus leaf. The only adjective I can find is TRANSCENDENT. Best in the world?? Quite possibly!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Tasty DimSum!

By Skiuseme |

The dim sum was very tasty and staff friendly. We had the Shimp Rice Roll, Wonton in spicy oil, Har Gow, Bean Curd and the Pork Buns.

Delicious!

Visited this NYC institution with my local friends while I was visiting from England. Loved it - felt really authentic and the food was plentiful and delicious. Service was good but be prepared to queue. Located in the heart of the city in Hells Kitchen.

Inexpensive, simple and shabby

By dedalus75000 |

Inexpensive, simple and shabby place with good food. I liked the spring rolls, although I really missed the sweet chilli sauce (they only have soya sauce like sauce) and liked the dim sums. I was quite disappointed with them running out of any kind of noodles, and they explained that it happens on a daily basis. Well, just make more noodles. There are no reservations, and it’s near many theatres, so if you come at 6pm, you’ll probably get a table right away, if you come at 7pm, it’s probably going to be a long wait.

Good Dim Sum near the theater district

By ColoAvsPuckhead |

Went here for dinner following a show upon recommendation of family member who lives on Manhattan. Was slightly early for dinner rush so fortunate to not have to wait for a table. Menu is slightly limited but every item we tried was excellent. Servers tag-team but seemed to work seamlessly for us. We went through two rounds of ordering and wait times were reasonable both times. Would recommend and will consider return trip on next visit.

Delicious dim sum

By BJG9 |

The food was delicious. And as we ordered more food, they continued to bring it out at a proper pace. The staff were attentive and quick to come to our table whenever we looked up. We highly recommend.

Absolutely great!

By sistersNordland |

We like to explore interesting new neighborhoods and new cuisines. We saw a review of this dim sum restaurant and had a fantastic meal after a matinee show. The food was new to us, but our great waiter explained and described the selections, and made recommendations according to our preferences. He was charming and his service was impeccable. He even stopped us from eating the lotus leaf which was wrapped around a sticky rice dish. We didn't know better - we'll try anything. We ate dishes we had never heard of before based on our waiter's recommendations they were all delicious. The restaurant is clean, the food attractive and delicious, service couldn't be better. We'll certainly be back..

Superior

By Diver Dan |

This place really stands out for the quality. You order off a (limited) menu, but instead of carts, upside is everything comes out hot. Also everything we tried was really good to excellent. Everyone gets the signature baked pork buns, which are unlike anywhere else. The eggplant with shrimp, which can be gloppy, was the best we've had anywhere. Price reasonable for quality in NY. Very casual.

Decent Food, Poor Management

By Jennifer F |

The food was good (comparable to the Tim Ho Wan I visited when in Hong Kong) and prices were high as expected for a Manhattan location with expensive rent. My original rating was 3 stars however reduced one star due to service issue explained below. Food: The pork spare ribs with black bean sauce were my favorite. Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gow) is usually my go to dim sum item and it was decent. The pan fried noodles lacked flavor and didn't have the veggie ingredients mixed in when they cooked it. They just insert carrots and scallions in the middle of the dish which I thought was odd. I wouldn't order it again. The vegetable dumpling was fresh however also lacked flavor. The congee (pork with thousand year old egg) was excellent. The other dim sum dishes I tried were turnip cake and beef rice crepes which were also good. Overall the food quality is good however you can also get good food in Chinatown. Service: The servers all work as a team to cover all tables. They are really friendly and attentive and quick to clear any empty plates as soon as you take the last bite of food. I placed a supplemental order of food (pork spare ribs with rice) and when the dish took longer than expected, I had about 5 different servers ask me within a 5 minute period if there was anything else they can get me (aka give me my check). So it was a bit annoying to have to explain to 5 different servers that I am awaiting for an additional dish I ordered. When the dish finally came and when I was about a third of the way eating it, the manager (lady in blue dress) came over and asked if there's anything else we would like to order. She had the check in hand and before I can respond she gave us a dirty look and dropped the check in the middle of the table without saying a word. She mentioned to the server to bring us a to go container. I refused the container and informed the server I never asked for a to go container. It was really disrespectful that the manager did that because she probably felt we were holding onto the table too long when there was a line. It wasn't my fault that the food took longer than expected for one additional dish! The servers had a much better attitude than the manager, which is really disappointing to see a person in leadership role act like that. I work in the hospitality industry so I know what good service should be like. I won't be returning again after the service I received along with the dirty looks I got with my meal for apparently dining too long and being served a to go container which I didn't ask for when I didn't even finish my food yet. As a point of reference: My total time spent in the restaurant was approximately 1.5 hours. As this is not a fast food place, I do not expect to be rushed in that fashion with ample time for good food, company and conversation. Food was decent however I think I'll frequent my usual Chinatown restaurants next time I have a craving for dim sum! Date of visit: Friday July 19, 2019

I have yo confess I mixed

By Nick R |

I have yo confess I mixed this up with another Michelin started dim sum restaurant in Asia - Din Tai Fung - but the food here is a slimmed down menu from some of those I have seen in Asia. The quality of what I ate was good but I chose poorly and ended up with pork in black bean sauce still on the fairly sharp bone fragments. I also choose a few item fried which I would personally avoid in future. The steamed Dim Sum were fantastic and so i put my experience down to menu choice. That said the choice is a little limited - see the photos of the choices to make your own assessment. I used yelp rather reluctantly to join the waitlist from my hotel - but I have to say it was superb delivering me at the restaurant just as my name got to 2nd in the queue hence a 5 minute wait. Not expensive so for NYC for some good quick food - good - for something special not so sure. Hope this helps

LOVE THIS PLACE

By puffinopus |

They have the BEST dim sum and the service is great. If you like chicken feet this is the place to be--the peanut and abalone sauce is delicious. The pork buns are among the best I have ever had. Prices a very reasonable--especially for NYC. Try to go on an off hour as it is usually crowded and no reservations. But it will be worth the wait.

Dinner after matinee

By t j |

This was my 2nd time here. The first time we couldn’t get a table and the wait was too long. This time we lucked out as it was mid afternoon and we got seated right away. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Each entree came out as it was ready rather than waiting for everything to be done. We liked this as we got to share each plate. The prices were very reasonable for a NYC restaurant. I will definitely go back again. If you can go on yelp before you go and see if there is a wait. When we checked there wasn’t. If so, you can get on waitlist as you travel there.

Great pre theater dim sum

By Familylove24 |

Found this place walking around looking for something good to eat before the theater. The service was fast , the food very fresh and the resteraunt was clean and well lit . I will be back !

Authentic dim sum

By divefan |

The venue is small and crowded, but, hey, it's NYC. The dumplings were spectacular. You order from a menu rather than select from carts.

Authentic

By Max D |

If you tell me you can eat authentic Chinese food in Times Sq, I would say you’re nuts. But you can these days. Times Sq used to be the worst place in NYC to eat a meal - overpriced, nasty chains like Applebee’s, you’re better off with fast food just to get it over with. This is a brilliant idea - create a chain of authentic Chinese restaurants, specifically Cantonese cuisine which is arguably the best of all Chinese cuisines. I know a bit about authenticity of Chinese food having spend some time in China. The quality here is quite high though not the best. It’s quite hard for a chain to reach greatness but they come close. All my Dim Sums came out piping hot except for the congee which I specifically requested that I want it very hot which is quite ironic and comical. Congee tastes amazing when it’s hot and I just knew it would be lukewarm from a big pot. I just knew it. However, it’s a wonder that I was able to get authentic Chinese food for reasonable prices at Times Sq. I am impressed.

Could be better

By TravellingTrio720 |

Just finished having a meal here and was disappointed. This location did not seem to be as good as the one in East Village. While the service was satisfactory, the food was not what I would expect for a one star Michelin restaurant. The har churn had shrimp balls instead of individual pieces of shrimp in a paper thin rice noodle. The turnip cake was blended and burned without the delicate taste of dried shrimp and lop yuk. The lotus leaf with rice were as were the Har gaw. The restrooms were atrocious. There should not be a layer of grease in the stalls. I will not come back to this locale, but I will go to the East Village one instead.

very good Dim

We had some very good Dim Sum fur lunch. Good choice of different small menues. Service was very nice.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

By Winnie N |

We had breakfast, lunch and dinner at this restaurant many times during our visit in New York. They only have limited items on the menu. But good amount of selection as you can get rice, noodles and Tim sum. Food came fast and they tasted good. Beware of peak hours like weekends morning.

Highly recommended

Visited Tim Ho Wan in NYC's Hell's Kitchen and loved the authentic dim sum, especially the baked pork bun. Friendly staff and fantastic service, reminiscent of their Hong Kong location. Highly recommended, but expect a queue.

Not like Hong Kong!

By hitchthehiker2000 |

I had the chance to enjoy Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong and Singapore, but the NYC franchise was a real disappointment. No way, this branch is one of the 1 Michelin stars awarded this franchise has been known for. The signature dish, the famous BBQ BUN was nothing like the original offer, back in Asia (the crust was too thick and the filling so tasteless). The Dumplings were dry and soggy. Fellow New Yorkers, if you have the chance to travel to Asia, please taste THW locally; a totally different experience, Guaranteed! The Congee was delicious, but how bad can you be to mess up this simple dish. Din Thai Fung, the main competitor, and master of dim sum consistency, must be rubbing their hands!

Fabulous dim sum

Having heard so much about Tim Ho Wan, we finally made it to the restaurant. Amazing dim sum. The baked pork bun is to die for, best I have ever had.

Chinese culinary treasure in Hells Kitchen

By Ernesto |

Tim Ho Wan, self-described as the cheapest award-winning restaurant in the world, specializes in dim sum, offering an authentic Chinese gastronomic experience in the heart of Hells Kitchen. While browsing the extensive menu, we were struck by the diversity of dim sum options, each revealing the culinary skill behind the restaurant's renowned title. Tim Ho Wan not only delivers exceptional quality, but also maintains affordable prices, making it an irresistible option for Chinese cuisine lovers. Among the dishes we had the pleasure of tasting, the “Baked BBQ Pork Buns” stand out, buns stuffed and baked with a light and fluffy dough, filled with pork. “Pan Fried Chicken Dumplings With Ginger Essence” combine a crispy texture on the bottom with irresistible juiciness on the inside. And the “Steamed Rice Roll With Minced Beef” a steamed variation of rice roll stuffed with ground beef. I recommend it to everyone who wants to explore the richness of Chinese gastronomy in a welcoming and accessible environment.

Not impressed

By Bacchus |

Not really good. We didn’t understand the good reviews. Food was alright and in most cases eatable but neither as good as proclaimed nor Asian at all. In fact it was very “westernized” and everyone who had real Chinese dumplings once would be disappointed. Some dishes very visually really not appealing at all.

Tasty dim sum, but with a long wait

By Brooklynite_Abroad |

This chain restaurant, based in Hong Kong, serves delicious dim sum. Be prepared for an hour plus wait during peak times; outside peak times, grabbing a table is never a problem. The sticky rice with meat, wrapped in banana leaf is a standout, as is the stuffed tofu skin. The eggplant and rice rolls are amazing as well. If you love dim sum you will enjoy a meal here.

amazing dim sum

By Daniel M |

Dim sim was absolutely delicious! Super sweet host, super knowledgeable server, and overall a great experience. Must try the steamed chicken, the shrimp and egg white rolls, the veggie dumplings, the eggplant, and their house hot sauce. Tea and deserts are also very delicious! overall the best dim sum (both overall experience and, service, and taste) in nyc!

Quality has gone down a Bit

By bigwawao |

We were here for the second time and I must say that the food was not as good as the first time I was there. What particularly disappointed me was that the congee was barely above lukewarm. Now, I am easy to please, palate wise, but were they scraping the last congee off the pot? Service was quick though and we were seated after a short wait.

Craved this since we visited Hong Kong

By Andy S |

We became a fan of Tim Ho Wan when we visited Hong Kong in 2016 and when we discovered Tim Ho Wan USA during our trip to NYC we just had to eat here. Just like what we found in Hong Kong, the service was fantastic and the Dim Sun is extremely tasty. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Dinner for 2 for less than 40$!

By Dr_Iris_B |

We came here for dinner before a show. The place was busy but within minutes we were seated. The menu offers not too many options , you chose and mark it on a piece of paper and hand it to the server. We chose their special famous buns that were simply delicious. We took a few orders of steamed dumplings and rice with beef That lava balls were a great desert. Food was delivered quite quickly and was simply delicious. We had a great dinner for less than 40$!

Such fresh goodness

By Pete P |

The quality of food and the service was top notch. Recommended by a NYPD and he was spot on. Had a multitude of different items that we presented quickly and a delight to our taste buds. Totally coming back. Keep a lookout as you would walk by and miss it.

great dimsums!

we had almost everything in the menu and everything was great. highly recommend this place and do make sure you put yourself in the waitlist (on yelp)

Truly Authentic Dim Sum

I know Tim Ho Wan as the cheapest Michelan star restaurant in Hong Kong and this one is almost Just as good! Brilliantly small menu with real dim sum - the BBQ pork buns are unreal!

Nothing Special

By ckatmomi |

Food for the most part was good. Very disappointed in the steamed pork spare ribs with black bean sauce. It might have been tasty but it was all little piece of bone with nothing to eat. The pan fried noddles were greasy. Service was excellent and staff very friendly but I have had better dim sum
