Great food and service, but it's NOISY !!!!!!!

By rover28 |

Bring your earplugs ! Or just scream and yell at the top of your lungs like everyone else dining here. Food is very tasty, and service was pretty good considering the cacophony.

Great Food and Drinks!

By iDontAskMuch |

Enjoyed multiple taco dishes (cerviche tacos, grasshopper tacos), Carnitas entree, guacamole, and cocktails. The cocktails were incredible (loved my mojito), as was the guacamole and chips. Service was great and atmosphere energetic and authentic. Will definitely return! Great Churros dessert and coffee too.

Great drinks, great bartenders and good food

By NYCtravel |

Great local place for mexican. Bartenders are great, I love sitting at the bar with a margarita and having dinner there. Its as all local great places - loud, busy and has a good atmosphere. Some of the things I like to order are the tuna tacos, the guac (their medium is my version of mild), the mushroom quesadilla and my favorite entree is the chicken toloache. And of course the house margarita! Food is consistent, service is consistent. If you sit at a table instead of the bar, the waiters/waitresses have been great to us as well.

Spectacular!

By dfc9258 |

This restaurant was recommended to me after I had booked a reservation at another nearby Mexican restaurant. This is the best Mexican restaurant that I have ever been to. The ambiance, service, food and drinks were all spectacular! If able, request a table outdoors as it is magical and adds even more enjoyment to the evening. Guacamole rojo was great Margaritas were amazing Awesome tacos Service was authentically friendly, prompt and enhanced the evening. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service you receive.

Fun, delicious and terrific staff

By BarbaraAnn_22 |

Just returned from dinner with 2 long term friends. Rafael the manager treated us like special guests. Selection of tacos-one did-one shrimp- and 1 entree was plenty. Guacamole perfect

excellent lunch choice

By natros_oxide |

we had a perfect, delicious lunch here before exploring the met art museum (three blocks away). i had pacifico, my wife had a couple superb spicy margaritas. started with chips and a great, smoky salsa, and hearty fresh guac. the yellowtail ceviche was light and flavorful. couple nice pork tacos for me, phenomenal huevos rancheros for the wife. just good quality, simple, tasty mexican food at a fair price, excellent service, and good atmosphere. would reccomend, and would return.

Always good!

Great Mexican that never fails! Love this place! Chicken tacos, mushroom quesadillas, quinoa paella, it's all very good and they are super kid friendly - icing on the cake!

Creative and delicious!

By SkyandMarvo |

Not your typical Mexican style food, it is outstanding. The mixture of flavors and textures are a gift to your palate. Go for brunch or dinner, try the carnitas or the guacamole or any other dish. We've been there three times and always have had a great experience. They have a quaint patio in the back. Enjoy!

Fabulous

Delicious authentic Mexican food. The decor etc is lovely, good delicious and cocktails even better. It's not cheap but well worth a visit.

Great neighborhood restaurant

By HMW |

We were able to sit outside on the patio in perfect weather. The margaritas were delicious and the guacamole was the best we have ever had. I had the Pollo Toloache with rice and black beans and it was amazing. We finished the meal with Jamacia Fruitas- it was the best dessert ever. The waiter was great with recommendations and very intuitive about when to check in and when we were good.

Nice place; good food

By WorldtravellerKNH |

Went for dinner there. Each time I have been there, the quality has been consistently good. It was nice weather and we sat outside (space in the back). The place is always crowded - speaks for the quality. Service is good - though many times the "smile" is missing. Drinks are good and they have some that are different and cannot be found elsewhere in the city. Overall good experience. Have been there multiple times.

Great margaritas

By tfav508 |

If you can get past the small serving sizes, the food is excellent.... Started with some guacamole and the best chips I have every had, fresh and crisp. Guacamole was fresh made to order. Can't beat the house margarias. Fish taco's were small ( 4 inch )but the taste made up for the size, as were the chicken taco's. Red beans and rice had just the right bite. Table next to us shared their fried grass hoppers, they were delicious. Service was attentive and pleasant. Dinner for two with a drink each was just under $100, quality and flavor made up for the price

Simply the Best

By Irwin N |

Stumbled across this wonderful little gem while in NYC. Called ahead, there were no reservations but said that we would almost certainly find a seat tat the bar or the ceviche bar. So we sat at the ceviche bar where you can watch them make three different types of guacamole and the ceviche. We started with the guacamole that included mango apple, Thai basil, pomegranate seeds and habanero. Sounds different and it was GREAT. then we went on to the quesadillas with huitlacoche, corn, black truffle and cheese YUM. the main dish was chipotle miso glazed black cod served with black truffle butter and hon shimeji mushrooms with corn. Close tot he best, if not, the best dish I ever had. The service was impeccable, friendly and helpful Their speciality is Mexican dried grasshoppers. The extremely friendly and helpful manager brought us a small bowl o taste. We did. They were tasty but still could not get out of my mind that they were grasshoppers. Toloache is a msut he next time I am in NYC. Nothing like it in Boston.

Convivial modern mexican

By TLVguy |

We had a late lunch at Toloache following a weekend visit to the Metropolitan. The place has a warm decor and we were promptly and efficiently served. We started with some very good guacamole. Our older son had the Tolo Burger, which was a mess to eat as the poblano pepper leaked cheese all over the place. The tacos one Suadera, one Carne Asado) were tasty, but the meat portions were very small. I concluded with a spicy Café de Olla to cleanse my palate, and our sons were happy with their churros.

Try the avocado fries!

By kelmorris |

I'm actually reviewing the location on 50th btwn 7th/8th. Love the atmosphere...try to get a table upstairs. Make sure you make a reservation! I love the Pollo Toloache entree and the avacado fries are delicious! My friend usually has the enchiladas (which he loves) but tried the carne asada which was "just OK".

Pre-theatre Mexican Marvel

By Perry M |

Location on 50th St is good for theatre-goers. Out waitress made sure we finished in time for the show on 49th St. Atmosphere and food is up-scale authentic Mexican (mostly Ouahican). Excellent drinks (big choice of tequillas)! All four of us got different dishes and were delighted with them. Must return for more avacado fries!

What a Find!

By Chikarasailor |

We are moving to the neighborhood and Tolache 82 was highly recommended. It did not disappoint. We both had the Bacalao Trufado. This is a black cod dish poached in a miso-tequila glaze. It was served on a bed of corn, hon himeji mushrooms and a black truffle chipotle butter reduction. Delicious. The fish absorbed the flavor of the miso tequila perfectly. It was moist, not flaky and almost melted in your mouth. The ambience is lively and we sat at the bar, not having a reservation. Looking forward to returning and trying many other delightful entrees.

Dessert Was The Highlight

By Harvey M |

I was in the mood for red sangria ($11), but this restaurant's version was poor. The glass of sangria had little taste of red wine. I ate in the quiet area of a very noisy restaurant by requesting the "back patio" area to dine in (it seats about 30 people). It is a pleasant fenced in area with apartment buildings as background. My main course ($28) was mediocre, it was the Garlic Shrimp (Camarones Toloache). It had four large and weak flavored shrimp and not much more accompanied it. Definitely not for a hungry person. I had their steak here on a previous dine and enjoyed it. For dessert ($10) I had the Churros (cinnamon flavored miniature cigar shaped pastries) with two separate dipping sauces, a chocolate as well as a caramel dipping sauce in side dishes. The churros were served warm and they were a special treat. After that mediocre sangria and shrimp I deserved something really good. You may have seen large versions of churros being sold at the 42nd Street subway station in the tunnel between the Lexington Line and the #7 trains.

BEWARE!

By Richard J |

Went here on the recommendation of family who raved about their paella. Staff very accommodating and engaging as we sat at the bar for drinks and dinner. Shrimp tacos were very good, but small. The brussels sprouts were also very good. The paella, I.e. “tumbada” was fine, but I’ve had better and more generous elsewhere and for less than $34. What felt deceptive was the tequila recommended by the friendly bartender - Rafael - who did not mention (nor did I think to ask) that cost $25 for a small glass. So...food average plus. Drinks...deceptively expensive. Left much less pleased than we started out. As a result, will not be back and not recommended.t

Tiny portions with a large price tag

By delphi927 |

Always packed, my husband and I really expected a lot from Toloache. We've eaten here 4 times - our first dining experience was wonderful, and the food was delicious, however, the last 3 times have been disappointing. In addition to the inconsistent food, the portions are TINY and severely overpriced. It's ridiculous that after spending $125 on dinner/drinks for two, you're still hungry!

Best Meal in NYC

By Sinnet33 |

This was BY FAR the best meal and best service I have ever had in NYC. The food was delicious and came in smaller portions so there was much sharing and experimenting. We had an excellent server who took her time to introduce us to dishes we should try and tequilas we should sip. Usually in New York the waiters are in a hurry to get you fed and out of there. We enjoyed dinner so much we returned after the show to try the desserts. The desserts were not as good, in my opinion as the appetizers and main courses. The margaritas were excellent and the tequila list vast.

Fun stuff for everyone

By holly c |

I have been to this neighborhood place with both friends and family. With my friends, anything goes, but with my family, we need to be celiac friendly. This restaurant covers both those bases. It's lively and fun, and can accomodate large groups. It is Mexican inspired but it's far from your local taco truck. Like most Mexican restaurants, you can usually rustle up something gluten free using corn based ingredients. There are 3 kinds of guacamole, 4 ceviches and 10 different types of tacos, so there is bound to be something for everyone. Tons of tacos and plates, all of them tasty and possibly different from anything you've ever had before. I visited one fall and they had a dish of vegetables served inside a mini pumpkin. Service is fine...the place is bustling, in a large group it gets a little hectic, but always fun. Great for a gathering of friends....if bringing kids make sure they have an adventurous palate.

Best Mexican

By MCJac |

Absolutely fantastic. From the fresh made guacamole to the truffle quesadilla . The drinks, food and service are above average. My favorite Mexican in NY. I usually go to the location on 50 th st. Nt t be missed if you like Mexican food

Unpleasant Dining Experience

By TravelingM52 |

My sisters and I met here for dinner at 7:15. We don't see each other often so it was a special occasion just to be together. Drinks, guacamole and taco plates was good though portions are small and prices are high. With a generous tip our bill was over $300 for 3 people. We were talking and enjoying being together and at 9:00 the manager came over, with out a ‘thank you’, said we’d been there since 6:30 and asked us to leave so he could have the table. We’re in our 50’s and 60’s – this was embarrassing to begin with and for every other reason in the book (we are the customer) wrong. When we left we didn't see any long line at the front. It’s all about table turn over here not about an enjoyable dining experience customer service.

Awesome Mexican

By Rad |

The food is simply delicious. Fresh and tasty and quite original. Service is spot on and attentive. It's a good sort of loud and friendly vibes all around.

Lively bar

By Alicia C |

Came in for a quick drink and an app and was very happy with our selections! The watermelon margarita is super fresh and refreshing! Love that watermelon juice! And then the ceviche was super tasty. Nice tang of the lime juice with the tender fish. Mmmm. The bartenders were super friendly. Definitely will come back!

Lecturing of customers should not be part of a restaurant experience

By morelucknexttime |

I have been to this restaurant many times over the years because I live in the neighborhood a few blocks away. The place is usually crowded and very noisy, so I try to get there early. The prices are high, as indicated by other reviewers, but in my experience they are more or less in line with similar upper east side restaurants. That said, you expect a certain level of service. I usually sit at the bar with a friend or alone in the far right corner. This time that spot was already occupied so I ended up on the far left end of the bar. By 6:30 PM the bar and the restaurant were full, several people and waiters bumped into my seat while walking by toward the back room and the place was getting way too crowded and noisy. There was 1 empty seat on each side of my seat, after previous guests left. Before I even had a chance to register the question in all the noise or had a chance to answer, I realized the bartender asking if I could move to make room for 2 people, who were already standing behind my back ready to take the seats. I was completely caught off guard. - I find it inappropriate to ask quests to move while drinking or eating when paying the prices Toloache charges - I also find it inappropriate to be literally ambushed before having a chance to respond, the host alone should have come to inquire. - since the seats are on top of each other with literally zero space between them, earlier I already had to get up to allow the previous person on my right to sit down. I was so annoyed, that the decision was basically made for me, I said no. Why not just pull the chair from under me to give it to the next person while I am still having my drink? Suddenly another Toloache employee, I am not sure what was his function, showed up when he heard what I said, to give me a lecture about being a good neighbor to make room for the 2 newly arrived people. He was not joking or saying it in a pleasant manner. I barely finished my last drink I was so annoyed I left. Since when is lecturing part of customer service? Sorry, but giving lectures to your customers while charging the prices you charge is not OK and absolutely not acceptable. When I spend close to $70 (seventy dollars) for 1 person ( for one appetizer, drinks and tip) I am not interested in getting up and down several times, I am not interested in moving and I am certainly not interested in any lectures about how to be a good neighbor. This may come as a surprise, but when I am in your restaurant I am not a neighbor but a paying customer, who expects to be treated as such with respect a customer who wants to be left alone while enjoying her food and drink. It is obvious you are trying to squeeze out every inch of space at the bar. It is also obvious you have no consideration for the comfort of customers who are squished in the seats next to each other like sardines and you do not mind inconveniencing people so that you can sandwich in even more people in the already crowded space. Because customer treatment is just as important as the quality of food or drinks based on my experience I am giving this restaurant 1 star. Some or at least the minimum decorum would be a welcome and necessary change for this establishment.

surprisingly good Mexican

By schmidtmg |

We had dinner at Toloache at the recommendation of an Upper East Side resident and we were very happy with our dinner experience. The tacos were small but sort of an imaginative take on the traditional taco, our daughter's tortillas were good, and the enchilada we ordered very good. The restaurant's cocktails are also good (if pricey), and the choice of beers excellent... I had a few Lagunitas IPA with the meal, and the IPA went well with the dishes.

Popular but disappointing

By James M |

I visited here on a Tuesday evening with my wife for dinner. We booked and when we arrived we were glad we did, as the restaurant was packed. The waiter was very friendly they took our coats and directed us to our seat. The position was terrible though right in the middle of the back room, and with the waiters station just in front of us we almost constantly had waiters walking back and forth either side of us on a creaky floor. With the restaurant being very busy it was noisy and as neither me nor my wife tend to be loud speakers; it was hard to hear what the other was saying. The beer was very good, though quite pricey. The food- I had the signature dish Chicken Toloache which was a nice; Chicken on a bed of salsa and corn with a dumpling on top- it tasted nice though for me the chicken was overdone. My wife had the quesadillas which she loves- while the price was good I would have expected the portion size to be a bit bigger! Overall the food was okay but the atmosphere was not to our taste noisey and cramped.

Best guacamole

By Marilyn A |

Pomegranate guacamole to die for, with a pomegranate margarita alongside. Carrnita and Carne aseda tacos delicious. Shrimp dishes yummy. Not your average Mexican restaurant. Just excellent food.

Unique Mexican restaurant

By OK-NC |

My family and I visited Toloache during our recent visit to NYC and were very impressed. Prices were high with small portions but the food was excellent. Tacos were some of the best we've had and open faced quesadillas were a creative treat. I would eat here again though I wish it were a little cheaper or had larger portion sizes. Service was also a bit slow but it wasn't a big deal.

Toloache 50 - Fantastic!

By 2010 |

My husband & I enjoyed the outstanding regional Mexican cuisine at Toloache 50! We liked it so much that we went there twice during our one-week stay in NYC! Each night, the restaurant was packed and lively! The service was outstanding and the food was sublime! We especially liked the Cesear Toloache, Lechon Prensado (suckling pig carnitas), the BBQ ribs (special) and the warm Mexican chocolate cake with Pastel de Chocolate + dulce de leche ice cream. We will definitely return to Toloache on our next visit to NYC!

Nice Mexican in Manhattan Upper East Side

By marcellos375 |

We chose Toloache 82 for dinner based on a friend's recommendation. The restaurant is neat and relatively small, and it was surprisingly full for a week day. Service was good, and the food was delicious: we had Enchiladas Borrachas (very tender, really good) and Pollo Toloache, and shared a side of sweet plantains; the desserts we tried together (two servings with three forks) were the Tres Leches and Crepas de Cajeta, also excellent. The margaritas we tried were very good as well, I naively ordered a simple one on the rocks, unaware of the choice of 12 different options on the drink menu (it pays to check it, as they are priced quite differently ...). The bill for the three of us was $ 157, I guess in line with the location. It was a very cold evening, and as we sat near the entrance I appreciated the three consecutive external doors they have - still, a table closer inside would have been nicer, but they were all full. Overall we had a very nice time, and I will keep Toloache 82 in mind for the future as an upscale Mexican restaurant.

Good quality, unusual Mexican

By thoughtfuldiner |

Interesting mixture of Mexican and American ideas on the menu, but a million miles away form a dreary tex-mex place. A 'red guacamole' starter came a with chipotle sauce and was pleasantly spicy and abundant. A sopa de tortilla was much lighter and more nicely presented than your standard 'street' one, the tortillas cut in stripes, but certainly not bland. A vegetarian taco with courgettes was very tasty and well filled, and another fish taco was the best dish of the evening, really packing a punch of flavour. The only slight disappointment came from a jicama salad that was just an ordinary leaf salad with some jicama on top (but I liked the shaved almonds in it). Good tequila and mezcal based cocktails. There are various rooms, each with a different feel starting from the brigh one with the bar, bar stools and some tables. We were not offered a choice and were led to a darkish room at the back, but we liked the atmosphere and lack of crowding. Service was very polite and efficient. Prices seem fair for the area for this quality.

Upscale Mexican on the Upper East Side

By HAS_NYC |

Small plates or large plates - you choose. Two of us shared everything we ordered. Started with an order of medium spiced guacamole with very tasty chips (not oily or with too much salt), Then went on to one of the ceviche appetizers (four different types were on the menu). For the main part of the meal we ordered two separate taco items (each order had two soft tacos). One was brisket and the other chicken. Both were tasty and uniquely prepared. The amount of food was more than adequate for 2 persons. To wash down the meal one of us had the house marguerita and the other had a glass of sangria. The marguerita was the better choice.

Very good Mexican taco etc on ues

By Allan S |

This place has some wonderful dishes like Brussels sprouts fried with bacon , exciting spicy Mexican fare, pozole and kosher food for passover. The place needs reservations since it so popular and is a bit noisy and crowded so take out is a good option. Prices run high for the expertly prepared dishes and you will enjoy the richness of them and make sure to try chicken mole, a chocolate spicy sauce.

Good Mexican food

By Tomberra |

We were to celebrate a birthday and were invited to this Mexican restaurant and did enjoy the food. Mexican food is one of our favourites as it is normally spicy or has spicy sauces. We asked for extra spicy sauces to be added to the ordered spicy dishes. The spiciness was however limited but the food was good.

Excellent Mexican with a twist

By Gustave D |

This place is fantastic! Every dish is better than the next and the margaritas are plentiful with a huge variety of Tequilas. I highly recommend the Tacos with bone marrow.... Great atmosphere but quite noisey... reservations recommended.

Lovely meal

By NCtravelz |

We went early on a Sunday night and ate outside. We walked through the restaurant which looked lovely but the patio out back was very nice. The highlight of the meal was the mescalitas de pina. They could have been a little spicier but they were truly delicious. All of the food was good although some dishes were better than others. The fried Brussels sprouts were excellent while the avocado fries were a little bland. We asked for some salsa verde to liven them up. The callo de hacho was very good. The scallops and risotto were well flavored and nicely cooked. The ensalda de langosta was ok but it was under-dressed and not very exciting. The service was very good and the ambiance was nice.

Nice atmosphere, food based on your preferences

By KPNP19 |

I like the interior space here a lot and enjoy having lunch here. The food for me is only OK, but people do seem to like it and the other folks I was dining with certinaly enjoyed it. Margaritas are good for sure. Be cautious of pricing, it can get expensive and dishes are not large.

The kind of Mexican Food you always wanted...but did not know existed!

By OrganicForever |

Being the picky foodie that I am, my expectations were very high....and were exceeded with one BUT....the food is a little expensive. However, the cream and multiple chili sauce used for the rib-eye that was perfectly cooked, the wonderful hamachi ceviche and excellent panna cotta special (nothing to do with the Italian dessert of same name) might force me to open my checkbook again for another visit. Mezcalita and Margarita cocktails also fabulous but expensive. A special word for our server who went out of his way to advise on allergens in the food as one of our party is very nut sensitive make for a great experience. Worth revisiting on a regular basis.

Yummy quesadillas

By Gringuita19 |

Really enjoy this place. Quesadillas and tacos arr very interesting and tasty. Using braised short ribs, or corn, cheese and truffle oil makes the it light and delish. Not fond of their sangría. But very good service. Will definitely go back but will stick to wine.

Wonderful dining

By world t |

wonderful, flavourful, fresh, authentic Mexican dining. Service was great, we tried many tacos on the menu, all were delicious. very reasonable price. nice restaurant. would definitely go back again.

Great place to grab a drink

By Jacqueline M |

Great place to grab a drink. Got the house cocktail with botanical gin, cucumber, and a chili pepper - phenomenally mixed and very refreshing after a long day at the Met

worth a visit

By j p |

The food is excellent. I have never had better guacamole - the sampler with three types are the best I have ever had. The margarita was excellent. The Vera Cruz paella was absolutely delicious, as was the carne aside. The restaurant was very crowded and noisy enough that talking was hard. The service was good though sometimes a little too attentive It is not inexpensive. Dinner for five with drinks was about $300. I would go back

The Ceviche is superb

By Abdel-Rahman Ghandour |

Don't get fooled by the Mexican label of this superb restaurant. The true gems in the menu are the ceviches. Four kinds are currently served. Tried 3 and each one was better than the other. A real festival in the palate. A joy meal, truly. So go for the ceviche!

Hopping place with amazing Mexican food

By Tricia G |

Went here for my birthday and the food and service was amazing. The staff was super attentive, food was amazing (shrimp quesadilla, beef, shrimp and chicken taco and churros for dessert). The staff could not do enough for us, it was a very memorable dining experience. My only negative is the noise level was high, but that was because the diners were having a really good time.

Great Mexican

By LBCdovs |

Experienced Toloache on a Saturday night for dinner. Reservations are definitely recommended for this place. It was absolutely packed and there were multiple people waiting to be seated. Luckily, I had reservations and was seated as soon as I got my glass of wine at the bar. You will have to settle that bill since they won't transfer it onto your table bill. Service once seated was very good. We were immediately tended to and had a couple questions answered. Food order was taken and food was rolling out before we knew it. Everything from the appetizers to the dessert were delicious. Portions could have been a little bit more, but in their defense, the prices are very reasonable. Service did not waver as the night progressed as it sometimes does at some restaurants. I love spicy, but be mindful of their "hot sauce" . It's pretty spicy and left me a little off balance for a couple minutes. Use caution. If you're in the mood for a little Mexican and want it served with authentic flavor, I highly recommend that you look into dining at this establishment. Will certainly return.

Upscale Mexican,quiet for lunch

By BJaneH |

The Toloache in the theater district is a loud, raucous, place but the version on theUpperEast Side is quiet, pretty, and fun. The selections are interesting, like corn fungus and a variety of quesadillas. They do try to upsell the rather ordinary guacamole. There's a bar (TVset on soccer matches) up front but a nice quiet room behind. Portions are a bit small at lunch.

great food, exceptional service, good drinks, pricey for what you get

By akrook |

Went with a friend. Very good tortilla soup, don't bother with the dull Caesar salad, excellent lobster and carne asado tacos. The choice of guacamoles was nice -- we had the rojo, and it was tasty -- but overpriced. The margaritas were the same, good ingredients and tasty but on the small and expensive side. I'd come again for the food, and it is fun and noisy. If you see a mariachi band there, you may want to think twice if you want to have any conversation at all, as the brick walls and lots of glass combine with the band to make it deafening. The service was excellent: attentive, knowledgable staff who want to make you happy and are more than happy to bring you tastes of things before you order. Very impressive service.

Great Mexican Dinner + Patio Dining

By 007_HappyTraveler |

As is typically with NYC dining this place is small, so make a reservation. Inside is crowded, but back courtyard (where I dined) is lovely and quaint. Service is friendly and efficient. We started with Medium Guacamole - which was perfect. I chose the white sangria to drink, and it was okay (have had much better in NYC). My main dish, Camarones Toloache, was absolutely amazing. Described as "Roasted garlic shrimp, crispy tortilla, black beans, chayote squash, spaghetti salad, Mexican cheeses, cascabel salsa" --- but the SAUCE....phenomenal! I have no idea what it is, hot and spicy without being overbearing and so much flavor. Would definitely dine here again - we had a great experience.

Great Mexican Food

By Neil_CT_USA |

After working in Mexico, I really do like good Mexican food. However, I'm not a big fan of Tex-Mex food, so when a friend suggested we eat here I had reservations about the type of cooking we would encounter. Happy to say that I was totally happy with my meal. For starters, I ordered a "bandera" (three glasses: tequila, lime juice and sangrita) - something that I rarely find in Mexican restaurants in the States. They offer a variety of guacamoles (we tried 3 which were all delicious). The chef, Julian Medina, does a great job with his creations - a combination of true Mexican cooking with a "touch of French" overtones. Looking forward to going back.

Wonderful lunch

By EricW4555 |

Wonderful lunch at Toloache. Worth a trip to this spot any day. Very interesting dishes, spiced in creative ways - delicious! Not the standard mexican fare. Everyone in our party loved their lunch. Service was very friendly, efficient and helpful with recommendations. There were several families with young children, all having a good time when we were there, so seems family friendly too.

Imaginative Latin Cusine!

By Marc S |

It had been a long time since we had eaten Mexican Food!! Our meal at Toloache 82, was excellent. The restaurant was jammed, the food was wonderful, service was more than terrific and everyone left with a big smile on their face. Here is what we shared: o GUACAMOLE o Two kinds of CEVICHE o Lots of Tacos: Camaron, JM Langosta, Carne Asada, JM Suadero Great place to enjoy Mexican food!!

Delicious Mexican.

By Lynn M |

Walked here after a long afternoon at the Met. We arrived around 6? No reservation. We were seated right away but it quickly got very busy. We had the shrimp entree, the salmon entree, and a side of plantains. The server said tacos were appetizer size so we didn’t order any. Everything was delicious. Seafood was good quality and well prepared. Service was great. I had a lot of trouble understanding the menu and deciding, and the young woman who served us was patient and nice. Also attentive. It is a loud busy place. We didn’t have any drinks. Bill was about $130 with tip. There are a few tables outside. will return.

Uneven experience

By Gwen C |

We went with our three young granddaughters at 5:45, an hour we would normally be deciding what to drink. The place was already packed. First, the good news. The mild--for the little girls--guacamole was excellent. So were the churros the girls had for dessert. My yellowtail ceviche was good, but not exceptional. A huge fan of Peruvian ceviche, my husband ordered the Peruvian ceviche and was very disappointed. The fish lacked sufficient lime to both give it that acid touch and to cook the fish, which was essentially raw. My yellowtail was fine raw, but fluke is not all that great raw. The girls ate their tacos without complaint or praise. My lechon main course was excellent; my husbands lechon tacos were almost inedible they were so salty, and this from a man who likes salt. The conclusion: the girls and I were happy with the meal; my husband not at all.

Great Food - Service NOT!

By Mike P |

We enjoyed the food and drinks. Loved the carnitas, skirt steak, grasshopper tacos and the guac was very good. The down side...the service was horrendously bad. Have to ask 5 times for salt and pepper? The rude, very unfriendly waiter brought the experience down to an unpleasant level. Probably would not go back as it has been the same in past couple of visits.

Four and a half stars.

By Mark T |

The food is great and the menu has amazing variety. Service is thorough and swift. I love going here for Sunday brunch. If you have a craving for Mexican food on the Upper East Side, look no further.

The best Mexican in NYC

By Mike P |

Had a wonderful meal here with friends. Started with a great selection of Margaritas then we just had to try the grasshopper tacos which really were pretty good. The Paella was delicious and the roast suckling pig out of this world. The service was also very good. Would go back for sure.

First night in NYC

Having arrived in NYC late on the afternoon, wanted somewhere nearby to eat. Restaurant was across the road from the Amsterdam Court Hotel where we were staying and we called in at 8.00pm. Was very busy but we were told to have a drink at the bar and we would be informed when a table was ready. After half an hour and a Grey Goose vodka later, we decided to try somewhere else as the restaurant was not getting any quieter. The employee who took our original table request, was disappointed that we were leaving and assured us a table would be found asap. Within 5 minutes we were shown to a table and seated to order oour meals. The restaurant has an authentic ambience and the food was delicious (even though the hubby ordered grass hopper tacos for starters which I ended up swapping him for my beef ones!). Our main courses of seafood and chicken were both very tasty and good value for money. An excellent first night in NYC and a restaurant we would visit again.

Not all the great Mexican food comes from down south

By Athyrium |

Mexican food is my favourite cuisine and this by far is the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico or the Southwest/California. It is probably the most expensive as well but it didn't matter. This is 'haute cuisine' Mexican style with great flavour combos. We started with the spicy guacamole ($13) and some very good tequila cocktails (the double aged Heredura was sublime, the watermelon tequila cocktail, a bit pulpy). We moved on to queso fundido and to our main courses: mini chicken tacos, spicy carne asade, super tender pork carnitas and a miso-tequila glazed black cod and more cocktails and more guacamole. I would love to eat here very night. Check out the website for the menu. It will make you hungry!

Very good Mexican but fairly good expensive

By Allan S |

They make some really good tacos here and have Brussels sprouts sautéed with bacon that is off the scale. A neighborhood place we go occasionally but not on Friday or Saturday nights when they are crazed. The noise levels are incredible . We find that lately delivery is the way to go but still their prices are high for the upper east side so it is only once in a while. The food is excellent however

Phenomenal ceviche

By jaz79h |

Possibly the best (hamachi) ceviche ever--al dente texture, luscious sauce, onions and other flavoring fantastic. Really enjoyed the shrimp, and short rib/beef marrow tacos. Also the cheese/truffle quesadilla. Mescal and tequila cocktails out of this world. Prices up there too, but worth it. Also lovely service and delightful atmosphere.

Great guacamole!

By karinlab |

Here for a birthday dinner- the margaritas were excellent as was the guacamole (altho the portion was small for the price) The shrimp tacos were excellent but didn't enjoy my grilled shrimp main dish as well as the tacos. All and all a decent but slightly cramped restaurant.

Very good food and beautiful drinks

By Philippe G |

A mojito to start with: Perfectly blend and refreshing (not sweet for those who like it with a lot of sugar) The "Hamachi" japanese name for yellow tail ceviche is perfect: fresh fish, elegant seasoning, delicious fried avocado Red wine: Tempranillo, Altos Ibericos, Rioja Nice medium body Costilla de Res: Braised beef short rib: Beatifully slow cooked, nice carrot puree and crispy quinoa Overall a very good food and beautiful drinks

Upscale Mexican

By Eric P |

Party of six for a quick bite after a day at the Met. Lovely ambiance, knowledgeable wait staff, interesting menu. All of the offerings were unique and none were what you would expect. Tortilla soup -excellent! Guacamole- smooth and tasty. Ceviche, awesome! Tacos, not your typical fare, brisket, short ribs, zucchini. All were tops. All in all a very enjoyable evening. It was our first visit, but won’t be our last.

Food is to die for

By Callie C |

Loved getting to visit this restaurant. I'd read reviews that they had the best guacamole and they were right! My husband and I sat at the bar and enjoyed their enchiladas and guacamole. We agreed that this was some of the best food of the trip.

Enjoyed it!

By Timothy L |

The place has a nice bar and general vibe. Food and service were great! We had a rsvp and it filled up quick so I would recommend getting one. Looking forward to visiting in the summer so we can check out the patio!

Good Option After The Met

By SigEpGov |

A smaller Mexican place that gets busy. Reservations would be a good idea. A not too far walk from the Met. Food was very good and service was fast. I’ll be back here.

I never thought "subtle" and "Mexican" went in the same sentence - I was wrong

By Peter S |

Suckling pig was utterly perfect, after a starter of three different guacamole. Everyone commented on how good their meals were. Amazing to find such good food so close to the tourist traps of Times Square.

To confirm what the other reviewers have said...

By jjoshua |

The place is nice, the service is very good, and the food is delicious. Also, the portions are a bit small and borderline pricey for what you get. When I'm spending $15 for a margarita, please don't serve it in a small cocktail glass. Put a few more ounces of drink into a bigger glass. Dining tip: The side items are moderately priced and reasonably sized. Instead of an entree, order a plate of 2 tacos and then load up on sides. You'll get a bit more to eat and have some additional variety.

Fab Mexican Food! Great Margs, Great Guac, Amazing Carne Asada Tacos.

By JCSNYC |

This is my husband's and my go-to date night spot. It's got amazing margaritas (try the one with cucumber and cayenne pepper), killer guacamole, and great entrees. The atmosphere is dark and intimate, without feeling like a hook-up scene. They're even friendly to children; on the few occasions we've been there with our toddler, the waitstaff have gone out of their way to make sure she was happy. (She always was.) Highly recommended, whether for a date night, a boys' or girls' night, or a family dinner out.

Top Mexican near the Met

By njcycle |

Oaxacan chef, but menu features top regional dishes. All but the desserts good to excellent. Attentive, knowledgeable wait staff. No rushing even on a busy night. Reviews accurate in placing it among the best Mexican in NYC and a few blocks due east of the Met.

Indifferent

By Henry L |

I am unable to give four stars. Three is the maximum. I felt there is a sense of neglect. The air conditioner in the back room needs maintenance. There was a paper napkin on the floor I- this should have been cleaned up before they gave us the table. Guacamole was reasonably good but the carne Asade had too many tendons and I left 1/3 of the plate uneaten. The wines, including the Pinot Noir was overpriced ($14.00 per glass). I felt we deserved a better experience.

Excellent service and good Mexican food

By HoustonMattman |

Went on a Saturday at 2 in the afternoon. Sat outside on a beautiful day and had the outside to ourselves. She had the truffle quesadilla and I had the "brunch" steak and eggs with a mole enchilada. The quesadilla was delicious if small, appetizer so not unreasonable. The steak was very flavorful if a bit chewy at times. But, once agiain it is skirt steak so some leanency is due. Overall great experience. Will return

Comfy eats on a Sunday.

By James O |

Followed Trip Advisor to Toloache 82. On anice sunny Sunday around 2pm, place was quiet, only 25 percent occupied. Food was fairly simple, but nicely prepared. Wife's skirt steak was tasty and my Pan Dulce con Leche (roasted banana French toast with Dulce de Leche) was fantastic. Service was friendly and efficient. Will recommend to all. Will return

Amazing Mexican restaurant

By Sylvie G |

This place is awesome. The front part is quite noisy and busy with the bar and some tables, the middle section is kinda quiet and the rear room is where we were. The cocktail list is incredible, with all sorts of tequilas, mojito, caipirinha and more. And the food... Mexican cuisine reinvented ! And the service is great

Wonderful authentic Mexican

By Margaret D |

Another great find on the Upper East side: Toloache 82. We did not have a reservation and had to sit at the ceviche bar. Food was wonderful - tacos a bit on the pricy side. Cocktails were stellar. Intimate atmosphere. Whether on a date or with family and friends as we were, you'll love the food and drinks. Service was excellent (maybe a little too much). ENJOY! a must if you're in the area.

Overpriced

By NYresident |

Small restaurant. Clean. Nice environment. Two tiny tacos completely over priced. A disappointment. The guacamole was fresh and chips delicious. Everything overpriced.

Excellence in Mexican Stlye

By Dave C |

I have been at Toloache 82, several times. At times with large groups or a cozy two. The Mexican food was delicious, the Chef made dishes I never tried, but when i shared from a friend's dish, I loved it all. This is why I have visited the spot (the chef has a few in NYC) so many times for lunch and dinner.

Good food but small portions and on the expensive side

By Florian |

The margaritas are very good but cost $13-18. The guacamole is great but comes in a rather small bowl for $14. The tacos are good as well, but you get 2 small ones for $13-19. This has to be one of the smallest taco portions I've ever seen, outside of tacos sold by the piece, and yet I'm not a fan of huge portions. And no, the rice and beans served on the side don't help. When I want to eat rice and beans, I order rice and beans! I would probably be willing to pay more for 1 more taco on the plate and no rice and beans.

Excellent food and service

By C F |

We went in there Saturday around 6 and the place was packed. We didn't have a reservation but the manager, Sulima Lopez said that we could wait for a table and she would do her best to get us in. We ended up having to wait about 30 minutes but she was able to work us in. We were not disappointed! The service was exceptional and the food was very very good. If you are looking for a Mexican restaurant where everything looks the same, this is not the place. It is high quality food and a great presentation. Would highly recommend!

Fun and Tasty Restaurant on UES NY

By Douglas T |

We had a great Cinco de Mayo dinner here. The food was excellent, and the band on top was nice. I have been here a couple of times over the years and it does not disappoint. Four of us started with festive e sangrias and guacamole. We asked for veggies in addition to the chips which made it better. We had a range of food, including tacos, enchiladas and for me a shrimp quesadilla. All very good. The deep fried avocado was OK but unnecessary . A great neighborhood haunt if not a destination restaurant.

Fabulous, Fresh, Mexican

By ssmith9179 |

This is NOT your typical taco joint! Beautifully served, quality food at reasonable prices. The chicken was tenden, juicy and delicious. The suckling pig, amazing! Don't forget to have a margarita :-)

Great Mex food

By Ron T |

Went with friends for lunch sitting outside on the patio on one of the first spring days it was warm enough to be outside. Very good food and drinks with great service. The fish tacos were with grilled fish and very good. The creamy rice was EXCELLENT.

Very, very good - it's worth the detour

By Salomoi |

I have been to Toloache a couple of times with a group of friends. The place provides a gourmet variety of Mexican and other latinoameican dishes. The staff is very friendly and the cultural richness of the waiters allows you to merge into a real experience of food tasting. Make sure you ask for advice on the size of the dish, as some are very small. The mezcalitas - a type of margarita prepared with Mezcal (another mexican hotwater) instead of tequila are delicious! Thumbs up for the tacos de langosta... And the habanero sauce (very spicy).

Delicious Pescados Tacos on the UES

By WhereNext2NYC |

Dined at the East 82nd Street location recently and sat at the bar. The food was well prepared and tasty. The fish tacos and brussel sprouts were good choices. The margaritas were pretty good too. We sat at the bar -- the service was friendly and quick. The setting is nice .... the very back room however, was a bit dark and cramped. This area around 82nd Street and Third Avenue has seen more hip, cool restaurants/bars/cafes opening.

Great food, service so-so

By John A |

Great Margarita choices and comes with a punch. Food was excellent but one of our dishes came after 45 min. Apparently it was not punched in to the POS for order. The Manager apologized and had the dish cooked immediately. He delivered the dish himself and gave a free dessert aftrr. Good recovery.

Great neighborhood Mexican

By Peter R |

Definitely a cut above, the food here is interesting and well executed. Particularly loved the huitlacoche quesadillas. The margarita selection is also excellent. The service is friendly and solicitous and the manager, randomly a Green Bay Packers fan, went out of his way to make one feel welcome and well cared for.

Creative Mexican

By Steven P |

This is the place on the UES to go when you want Mexican food, but not just rice and beans. The menu is creative, but not outrageous, no "foamed" dishes, just well seasoned and good. It also has an extensive collection of tequilas.

Delicious food !!

By Nick L |

Excellent food and excellent service - can’t understand why this place is not full of people !! We had the guacamole and the fondu and quesadilla - exceptional

Toloache

By Melinda C |

Just wonderful fresh produce and service was impeccable. Guacamole was sensational could have just eaten that on it's own!

Not your typical Mexican

By Lledfordny |

We really enjoy Toloache whether it’s having dinner at there or ordering for delivery. The food is creative and nicely presented. We generally share several things that way we get to have a sampling of many of the wonderful dishes. We love the guac but want the traditional only spiced up...no problem. Just ask. On our last visit we sat at the bar and enjoyed the vibe but if being close to the door bothers you, be sure to make a reservation as they are always packed. Try the cucumber margarita - my favorite - just perfect for summer. The ceviche appetizers are wonderful - especially the toro mini tacos. Be prepared for some noise which is the only draw-back we have experienced other being sure to make a reservation (or being prepared to wait). Toloache is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Modern Mexican

By silvera2 |

Not Tex-Mex. Not burritos and tacos. Not beans and rice. This is high class modern Mexican. We had soft shell crabs and duck in mole and a beef which we shared. Everything was great, innovative, beautifully plated and delicious. We started with cerviche ( they have a few different types) plus traditional chips and salsa. Drinks were large and expertly made with good tequila. Looking for upscale Mexican? This is the place.

This place is awesome!

By travelwriter |

Fabulous food, really cool atmosphere, wonderful server. A bit overpriced for portion size, but it is Upper East Side Manhattan. Its kind of part of the deal. Loved our tacos, guac and plantains. Would probably pass on the $18 better quality maragarita and just get the traditional next time. Sit outside if you can. Its a sweet urban courtyard.

Original mexican but very expensive !

By gino23g10 |

I went recently to this restaurant with my girlfriend... Very friendly and typical mexican environment, excellent margaritas, tacos and awesome carne asada...too expensive tough (60 Bucks each for 3 drinks, one portion of chips with guacamole, one appetizer and One main course)...

Nouvaux Mex Gourmet

By Zhiv |

Friends invited us to this Mexican establishment, which surprised us with the popularity, busy atmosphere, relatively good service and tasty foods at a reasonable price. Would recommend it.

Delicious food; good service

By Andrew C |

My wife and I hadn't made a reservation, but we were seated within 10 minutes or so. The scallops were great, and we were very happy with the service. Nice cocktails too. We felt the portion sizes were a little conservative, but otherwise a lovely meal.

Good food, friendly staff, cozy atmosphere

By Mary P |

We've been here a few times, and it's always crowded, dark and noisy, but the margaritas are good, the guacamole is good, the quesadillas are good, and the service is good. I highly recommend the black truffle quesadilla, and my husband really liked the lamb. Everyone we come here with, likes it.

Good restaurant with some stress.

By serarango |

Restaurant with a pleasant location although we perceived a certain atmosphere of stress and conflict among the restaurant staff. We ordered Mexican beer and beef fajitas to share. It was delayed and that's why they brought us some very delicious chilaquiles. The fajitas, although not what was expected, were very tasty. We are left with a bittersweet feeling.

"Hopping!"

By JSLinNYC |

I've been to Toloache three times now -- twice with family members who indulged my desire to order the grasshoppers, once with people who were too squeamish for that. I would definitely go back for the grasshoppers again -- though everything I've tasted there was excellent. But those grasshoppers! They are super crunchy and have the cleanest, freshest taste you can imagine. They are seasoned so deliciously that my real fantasy would be to get them by the bag and eat them like potato chips -- but the taco dish is quite satisfying. Toloache is not your average taco combination - refried beans and rice platter place. Everything is presented nicely, the portions are appropriate, the prices about average for the neighborhood, and the service charming. But I've got to admit, it's the grasshoppers that keep me coming back.

Much better than average Mexican

By JulesVerne1 |

Six minute walk from the Met. Large, friendly place with extensive Mexican menu including Oaxacan specialties. Service a little slipshod when the place gets full as it does most nights. Nice margarita (blood orange) from a long, interesting list. Table had a ceviche sampler - all super fresh and well presented; house chicken dish, nicely sauced (regrettably all white meat). Also one taco (lechon), perfectly put together. Pretty noisy place, lots of young singles. Quieter if you ask to be in the back.

Great Mexican food!

By Jose O |

Easily one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. Decor was unassuming and the noise level was a bit high but the food was great! form the guacamole appetizer to the quesadilla and the tacos, it was a feast to our palates! Did not really know how big the portions were for the main course but they were more than enough after having the appetizers and tacos. Next time, we'd just order more of the small plates and then share the main courses. Overall a great experience with good service. A bit expensive though.

Gourmet Mexican

By Barbara M |

We ate here during Restaurant Week before the theatre (the location at 50th Street between 8th and Broadway). Our meals were all excellent and we loved the coconut and the mango mojitos. My one regret: we did not have the guacamole which was being made fresh constantly. The decor is lovely without feeling cramped. We will definitely return.

Excellent Mexican food!

By mkd_travelmania |

Been a couple of times. Each time the food has been consistently good! Indulge in the ceviche trio and their mango raspado (a frozen mango margarita). Their shrimp or fish tacos are the best! The queso fun dodo a sure hit. Staff is always cheery & polite. On one occasion when they were packed we ate at the bar and had just as much fun. Will def go back!

I love it !!! Best Mexican food in upper east side .

By Nelson L |

I love all drinks I just to eat a trio of guacamoles , a chef selection margarita . and the special of the day , all fresh . The food is delicious the staff amezing . Cheap prices I really recomend it. Don't forget to try their grass hopper tacos . Oaxacan style w/onions,cilantro, salsa verde . Very yummy

Delicious Mexican food, very crowded!

By Sarah B |

Very close to the Gershwin Theater and Amsterdam hotel. The restaurant was packed but we still were able to get a table quickly. There at the right time- 7:45PM. The Oro Blanco Margarita was delicious as was most of the food. My sister and I ordered many small plates to share. I would recommend staying away from the Avocado Fries, however, not as tasty as they sound. But everything else was perfect. Our server, Chava, was by far the nicest, most helpful waiter I have ever encountered. He gave great suggestions about what to order and other places to try. It was pricey and very crowded but still delicious.

Amazing food. Mediocre service

By Matt W |

My wife and I went to NYC to visit MOMA and we heard great things about this restaurant. We gave it a try and were blown away by the food. We both said it was better than our favorite place in Philly. The service however made for a frustrating experience. We waited 20 minutes for the waiter to approach us after our plates were cleared. After that we had to then hunt someone down to ask for our check. Our lunch was nearly 2 hours during a time that wasn't busy. And I understand how places are setup these days but I hate listening to everyone's conversation because they are seated on top of me. All in all, amazing food and would return but hopefully the service is better.

Fun Evening

By Brad H |

First of all, they have an impressive selections of Tequilas! The Guacamole comes in three versions, mild, medium and spicy. Fresh and delicious! All of the food we had was interesting and tasty and we will definitely come back.

Drinks and dinner

By Joseph M |

This Mexican restaurant is a must for great margaritas and tacos and quesadillas. Sit at the bar with very professional bar tenders and friendly people.

Strange Dining Options

By debboca |

Went to this restaurant. It was ok. Gauc was good. The ordering of tacos was strange. They serve this appetizer style. They are small so to have them as a meal you have to get two orders. The dishes are a la carte. In a Mexican Restaurant? That's kind of funny. There were 5 people in my party and everyone said they wouldn't go back. Look for other options...there is better.

Must visit

By allroadsleadtorome3 |

Their cheddar chive biscuits are awesome. The she crab soup is the best in town and we have thoroughly researched that dish throughout Charleston!! 82 Queen's is the best-hands down!

Very Good Mexican Food

By NYCenteroftheUniverse |

Toloache We have now been to both locations several times (West 50th and East 82nd ) and the menu and food are similarly very, VERY good. We do, however, prefer the cozy, family vibe at the UES location. The three guacamoles with crudités is a winning starter. The chicken Toloache and shrimp entree are both very good, tasty, fresh and well prepared. While there are many gluten free options, the non-mushroom vegetarian entrees are quite limited, and we wish the vegetarian burrito style entree was back on the menu. The drinks are solid. The service is accommodating and attentive (even on Cinco de Mayo when the UES location was packed beyond comprehension, the staff remained composed, attentive and warm…. showing grace under pressure.) Dinner at Toloache is such a fun and really enjoyable experience with its upbeat vibe, festive atmosphere, accommodating service and yummy food. It’s become a go-to dining spot and we’re always happy to return !

Great Mexican food and atmosphere!

By lovee129 |

Loved this place, we just happened to walk in. The bartender was super friendly as well as the owner himself. Great drinks and the guacomole from the Guacomole bar was oustanding, they cut the avocados right there!..and the cleanlieness of this place was impeccable! Can't wait to go there again and enjoy a meal, because what we saw coming out looked delicious, and according to the people eating it who were regulars, it is one of the best places to eat in the city..if you are visiting MOMA, stop in here at some point, you won't be disappointed.

A special place on NYC’s Upper East Side

By Lucy G |

I love this restaurant. I’ve eaten here often every time I come to NYC for the past 30 years. The welcoming, the food, and the service is exceptional.

Consistently Excellent

By Ted-620 |

This restaurant offers consistently excellent Mexican food. Always a vibrant atmosphere. High-quality cocktails and a fun bar area.

Mexican dinner

By Necmeddin K |

Liked the place. Guacamole Trio is super. Very wide range of tequilas. I had lobster taco which was delicious, light and not american size. You just have the opportunity to taste a food which şs pleasant. Nice atmosphere, high end decent clientele. I will suggest to mexican lovers. Will definetly go again.

Needs a $$$ rating

By meacod |

We were looking for a good feed of Mexican and this came up on trip advisor with a high rating - we went but I note this restaurant lacked a price rating at the time of visit and it needs to be $$$ in my opinion. The food was nice but not spicy enough or bursting with flavour like I expect my Mexican to be. We weren't really full after our meal, and value for money lacks somewhat (even if it does angle for the upmarket customer, $15 for a single small quesadilla?) We probably wouldn't head back, though the tequila bar and guac options looked good.

Amazing food & service!

By 3sm3_sh |

My partner and I visited Toloache 82 after consulting the 'Top Ten NY' guide and Tripadvisor - and this place didn't disappoint. Brilliant service, friendly and attentive, and a delicious meal made our evening very special. The guacamole was fabulous and my margarita was really great. As native Brits, we weren't sure how much to tip (given it's rarely done in the UK!) and the manager of the restaurant followed us up as we left to check our experience was ok, given the tip was lower than normal. This was by no means a reflection on our time at Toloache, more an indicator of our need for American etiquette lessons - and showed that their customer service went above and beyond to ensure we had a great meal! If we were here longer, we'd definitely go back.

If you like Mexican foo, a must

By fidelrobert |

Summary: Place is always packed, prices are high, tables packed closely together. Menu is creative, food is better than good and service is superb. Prices are high. Review: If you are into Mexican food, you have to try this place. Just take a moment and go over the menu. It is creative. This isn't Tex-Mex food with all its heaviness, but rather, closer to Mexico City (DF)-style food. The selections are many. The bar is a great place to be and the bartenders are cordial but very busy. The food service wait staff is equally busy, but also professional and very helpful. The reason to go there: excellent food. The reason not to go there: crowded and pricey. Go there if you can! I can't imagine you'd be disappointed.

Great find in the UES NY

By MarFP |

Good margaritas, queso fundido with chorizo was excellent‼️. Also chicken tacos with Manchego cheese. Great Service. Not cheap but worth it. Small portions, not the typical mexican portions but well proportioned and balanced. Very good flavor in the food, very good quality.

Tasty Tidbits

By Baroness02 |

The food was quite good but the portions are small. Be aware that they are basically appetizer portions unless you order "platos fuertes. It was a beautiful day and we ate outside which was very pleasant. The service was excellent and prices reasonable.

Delicious food in noisy setting

By Hera38 |

The rooms are crowded, noisy, and not especially pretty, but there is a nice garden. The food, with eclectic riffs on Mexican ingredients, is consistently quite wonderful. Servce is friendly if erratic.

Awesome Upscale Mexican Food, One Junk Waitress

By forkauaiguy |

Stumbled upon this place after night at theater, "Mexican Bistro & Tequila Bar," caught our eye. Went in for drinks, delicious margarita's and tequila's. Bar tender was fun & eager for us to try different tequila. Ate a couple tacos, just to try (already ate dinner that night, but menu looked sooo good, had to try). MMMMMMMM!!!! Couldn't wait to come back and have real entree. When we did come back, host was great, got us seated, was full house, little bit loud, but heck everybody enjoying themselves. Food was off the hook! Delicious!!! Waitress sucked!!!!! Would have been 6 or seven stars, if it wasn't for her. I'm sure was an isolated incident, would have helped if she could have spoken better English. She was an idiot!!!!!! Little bit pricey, but was upscale Mexican.

Mexican Beyond Ordinary

By Deano50 |

Attractive enough group of rooms with food options beyond the standard Mexican restaurant fare. I enjoyed a seafood preparation which included lobster and jumbo shrimp in a generous portion. The guacamole was Ok and and mains ordered by others with us were good as well. Not a “gourmet” experience but way better than tocos, beer and chips. Service was prompt and friendly.

Delicious food and great service

By love2travel1207 |

My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day. While the seating is very close in proximity to other diners, the rest of the experience surpasses that one negative. The food was very fresh and delicious. The guacamole was one of the best we have tasted. We tried lobster tacos as appetizers and they were so fresh and flavorful. For dinner, we had the JM Camarones Toloache (shrimp dish) and the JM Costilla de Res (braised short rib). The shrimp dish was one of the best dishes that I have had; very flavorful and mouth-watering. My husband loved the short rib. The dessert was pretty good as well - we tried the churros (came with 2 dipping sauces - caramel and chocolate). The caramel was my favorite. We also tried the apple tart with vanilla ice cream, which was pretty good, but not my favorite. The ice cream was amazing, but the texture of the tart was a little too soft for me. It would taste better if it had a little crisp to it. Overall, the food was amazing and really fresh. It is expensive but definitely worth it for a nice occasion. Only thing I would change is the proximity to other diners if I could, but obviously the size of the place dictates that. Otherwise, I would definitely come back here again.

astoundingly good mexican food

By Tim N |

Unbelievably good. One of the best restaurants anywhere. Deserves a Michelin star. I've eaten alot of Mexican food both in the U.S. and Mexico and this place blew me away. I know other people are doing avocado fries, but I loved these. The quesadilla with huitalacoche and truffles was elegant, intense and inspired. My brother and I were excited for the grasshopper tacos - and they were great with an excellent bitterness to them - but the softshelled crab tacos and the beef shortrib with marrow tacos were even better. Outstanding service from Leydi. I can't wait to take my girlfriend here next weekend.

Excellent brunch - tasty food and drinks

By TravelsbyAZ |

Went for Sunday brunch. Had a great time. We were the first to arrive as that was the only time avail on the booking! Seated promptly and menus were short but good. Chicken tacos were yummy still taste the fresh corn on them. Had a cocktail - the one with maestro dobel was really good. Would definitely visit again. Loved their food so much that I visited their 50th st location on Monday!

NOT GOOD!!!!

By glennrr |

This place is a ripoff! Expensive dishes with not much food on the plate. The tacos were a joke with 1 tiny tortilla for each taco. Even I know you a good taco would have the double tortillas. The taco didn't have much chicken and nothing else on the plate. My soda was mostly ice and was charges $4. The server never checked on us. Finally, the bathrooms are a joke too, very hard to even get into the bathroom!

Amazing food and ambience!

By jaimelovebug |

I would recommend making reservations first. We did not but they had room at the back guacamole bar. We weren't pleased at first but was actually a great experience to watch the staff make three different types of guacamole and help sample. The food was unbelievably delicious and fresh. We tried the top three most popular items that were recommended by the server - truffle quesadilla, carne asada and fried brussel sprouts side. Seriously amazing. And the margaritas were so fresh! Must stop!

Overall good experience and food

By Alison T |

We went for a Saturday brunch and choose to sit inside, so I can't speak to the porch setting. I am betting there were more people out there based on the activity going to and from but in the dining room there was just us and a family of four. I liked the atmosphere inside. I could see it being cozy for dinner. Our service was pleasant and attentive. The food was quite good. We had the trio of guacamoles and were surprised at the size of the servings as it was much larger than we expected. They offered a second bowl of chips. I do not like spicy food very much and thought both the traditional and the fruit guacs could be counted as mild and the chipolte counted as medium. They were all fresh and good. My husband's tacos looked a little small, but they were more than enough along with the rice and beans. I had the huarache. The chorizo was understated but overall it was tasty. We finished with cafe de olla. I had never had it, so it's hard to say if it was "good" but it met my expectations based on the description and the underlying coffee was pleasant.

The best Mexican restaurant in NYC

By adrianonate |

If you come to NYC and you want to try an authentic Mexican restaurant this is a must. The best Margaritas in town. The menu is outstanding and service is even better. This is the place to be if you want to enjoy and share a great time with family and friends.

TOLOACHE is the best Mexican restaurant in nyc. I love this place. Guacamole, tacos and margaritas are fabulous. Vine is great. And the best dish on the menu is the truffle, cheese quesadilla! I have been many times and will be back!

Hi and Mexican food

Had the most delicious grasshopper tacos, black truffle tortillas want to die for. Innovated Mexican food brought to the next level great ambience beautiful restaurant and huge tequila bar

Avoid Times Square tourist food. Eat here

By MrBigote8970 |

We ducked in here walking back to our hotel from MOMA. It was too early for diner and we were just going to get drinks. The margarita selection was unique and excellent. One had hibiscus. We ended up ordering tacos also. Again, you won't find these in your strip shopping center mexican joints. Chapulines tacos have dried grasshoppers. Not bad at all. This place is on my list for my next visit to NYC. I have to try the quesadilla with huitacoche & black truffle.

Very good but very very small plates

Very good but very very small plates. A bit noisy unless you sit in back. We enjoyed it but we felt that it was rather expensive.

Delicioso!

Best guacamole we've ever had. You have to try the fruit one, it's great. Pork tacos were really tasty. Didn't know you could eat cactus until today :) Quick and friendly service and great atmosphere.

Superb Mexican food in the theater district

By LaBernardi |

On the Way to the Book of Mormon we wanted a good restaurant and since we are Californians we headed into Toloache by chance. Immaculate with a friendly ambience and excellent service, the restaurant serves up delicious and varied Mexican food. On the menu one finds at least five types of ceviche, grilled meats and fish, enchiladas and tacos with a variety that belies the rather short menu. We saw many locals and theater goers but also NY business folks who know the restaurant and, based on their exclamations of appreciation as dishes were served, are loyal patrons. In a city where you can easily strike out by "dropping in", Toloache is a winner. One down side is that the Margaritas are pretty darn expensive but the chips and guacamole are among the best I have had in recent years. Enjoy!

very good

By Guillaume E |

At a table for 4 whe shared Rojo (Spicy) guacamole which was excellent, just spicy enough for a european taste. Then two of us tried the JM Pollo Toloache which was great, the sauce was really tasty, the other two at the table had the Enchiladas Borrachas which was just ok. Service was friendly and quick. Cocktails are good too. A bit pricey but I recommand for the quality.

excellent mid priced Mexican

By wilson17 |

They have upper east side and west side locations, we choose the UES. We started with the Frutas guacamole-one of three versions-medium spicy and the one in the picture with pomegranates on top. It was very flavorful and fresh (maybe a bit small). Then tuna taquitos, also fresh and really good. Next was a wonderful lobster taco, then finally we shared their tumbada, which is a paella with big tasty chunks of shrimp, octopus and scallops. Margueritas were a bit variable, one came out really sour, but they replaced it with a much better one without complaint, The mojitos were quite good. Overall, excellent quality price, with last minute reservations available on a Sunday.

Great food!

A group of 6 of us stopped into the restaurant at 5pm and were immediately accommodated and taken to a table but I think if we had been later, they wouldn't have been able to! It seemed like a very popular restaurant. The waiter was really nice and everyone took excellent care of us. We shared a lot of different plates and everything tasted amazing. It is not a traditional Mexican restaurant, there's definitely a different take on it, but it's not so far off that it's "too weird". It was a nice balance of being just different enough :). I had the Pollo Toloache and it was excellent! We shared a few of the quesadillas and they were small but very tasty.

Toloache has Priced Itself Out

By TrunkTravel |

Toloache 82nd st offers a good (albeit tight) venue and very good food, several ‘creative Mexican’ dishes, but it has become a very pricey dining experience and the meal is simply no longer price competitive with other good dining options in the area. At the end of the day this is an upscale Mexican restaurant, it is not a Chez Paul or Daniel Boulud dining experience. The small drink servings range from $15 to $18 on average ($20+ with tip, tax) and the small size and ‘iced down’ servings are clearly intended to strongly encourage double orders. The food itself has also gotten pricier. Expect to spend $140 to $170 for two people ($80+ all in for ‘two equals one’ drinks for each person). Having been an adjunct professor at the Culinary Institute of America Singapore branch, and now living in this NYC neighborhood, I’ve experienced food and value. This restaurant offers no early ‘Happy Hour’, unlike many of the restaurants in New York, and does not serve lunch other than on the weekends. This might account for the need to significantly raise the per person ticket price to dine here. The food is very good, but it does not justify the current bill. So many alternatives in the area abound. If it’s Mexican, hit the restaurants on Upper East 2nd Avenue. The food is less creative, the atmosphere is less ‘hip’ but still lively, the food is still ‘Mexican’, and the cost will allow your pocketbook another night, or three! of dining out. Or venture further afield to the great Mexican run restaurants in the local community around 102nd and Lexington.

Great service, underwhelming food

By JBisthere2 |

The service was great - friendly, efficient, not intrusive, but were underwhelmed by the food. It started well - chips and guacamole appetizer were great with fresh hot chips, Meat in the signature brisket tacos was stringy and not tender, and enchiladas were underwhelming. It's hard to put a finger on what didn't hit the mark on the enchiladas, though for one of the party it was that they were primarily (all?) dark meat.

Picante Mexican in Met Territory

By Carmen R |

This Mexican restaurant has brought traditional tastes and heat to dishes we are familiar with and some that are new to our palettes. The space at this particular location is a collections of small rooms with lots of happy people, including families, friends, lovers and co-diners, so expect lots of noise during peak dining times. The service staff is friendly, eager to serve and willing to discuss the content and size of the dishes on and off the menu.

Good food, poor service.

By david u |

My husband and I walked in to have a quick tapas and drink before a show. Nice restaurant, clean and bright. Deciding what to have we just asked for water with the intention of ordering drinks and food. From that point on we were given rude service. We did order a drink and appetizer but waited almost 20 minutes for a $15 chicken quesidilla the size of a dessert plate and a pricey tamale. Basically once we ordered the bus person seemed to be the only person taking care of us until we paid the check. Only then were we presented with a smile when I had to pay the check.

High quality Mexican food

By 61Bounty |

Great menu, lots of choices. Their medium level spicy guac (w/ avocado, pomegranate, Vidalia onion, mango, apple, habanero, Thai basil) and chips is a nice starter, along with a tasty strawberry margarita to wash it down. The Enchiladas Borrachas entree (pulled chicken, tomatillo 5 chiles salsa borracha, Mexican cheeses, crema, radish salad) was solid. The front area w/ bar can be loud so if that's an issue request a table in one of the back rooms. Service is good. HIghly recommended if you're craving solid Mexican fare.

Excellent Mexican Food

By robcurtross |

A good friend and I had a lovely dinner at Toloache 82 on 82nd Street last month. The restaurant is very elegant, our service was outstanding, cleanliness was very good, and everyone in the back room where we were seated seemed to have a very good time. The ceviche was an interesting mixture of amachi yellowtail, meyer lemon, cucumber red onion, huicholl salsa, and crispy avocado -- the Mexican flavors over-whelmed the fish tastes, so it was not the classic Peruvian style, but still very good. The Paella Da Quinoa was made with quinoa-pico de gallo, corn, carrots, asparagus cauliflower, roasted hon shimeji mushrooms black truffle aioli and was an remarkable and delicious combination of tastes. Everything was served in an elegant and beautiful manner.

Best Restaurant in NYC

By Jfeakins |

This isn't the best Mexican restaurant in New York. It's just the best any-kind-of restaurant in New York. After relocating to the UES 3 years ago, I luckily stumbled upon Toloache and have returned more times that I can count. I've tried everything on the menu and it's all bursting with fresh ingredients. This is one of the few restaurants in the city with humble, friendly service- where they treat you like a guest and not a burden. The atmosphere is casual, fun, and lively- but not too loud or overly trendy. Great for dates! Try the freshly made guacamole with pomegranates, truffle quesadilla to start, and the fried brussel sprouts.

creative Mexican

By Steven P |

I have only been to the UES branch - creative and inspired Mexican cuisine, far from the standard rice and beans of many others - there is a good selection of Margaritas as well Now, if only the guacamole was prepared tableside ...............

Delicious Mexican Food!

By thistravelingdesignr |

Mexican food is very hit and miss in this city, but this restaurant is more fine dining seafood and meat dishes than typical Mexican food. The ceviche was delicious, the miso tequila black cod was sensational and the suckling pig carnitas was equally delicious. The overal ambiance was very vibey with good music, great margaritas and wine menu. Definitely recommended and definitely worth going back to.

Excellent menu, pretty place very crowded

By Allan S |

The food is very good here and place is rather attractive to look at. If you come early you will be happy but after 7 pm it is way too crowded, too noisy and just uncomfortable to be here. Thier menu choices are a bit unique and make for a good meal but probably come early or order out for the best results. This is just too popular for me at times and therefore I would rather not be here.

Mediocre Mexican Food at a High Price

By Rose_Kavalier |

Nothing special about the food and over-priced. I had the $20 margarita (chef's) (not special), the queso fundido with chorizo (ok), suadero tacos, enchiladas borrachas (ok), and pollo toloache (ng). Finally tab: $148 with tip. Not going back. Very mediocre food.

Fresh Traditional Mexican

By Mellenb814 |

Oh Yummy! Guacamole, fresh warm chips, paella with fresh lobster, clams, shrimp! Quesadilla of short rib and bone marrow too much goodness on this menu. The best part it's all fresh and prepared in a traditional fashion. Drinks are delicious with a wide selection of margaritas, beer and wines. The customer service is warm, sincere and fantastic. You experience authentic Mexican hospitality. This is a neighborhood gem on the upper east side. I can't wait to go back.

Good food, drinks & service for a reasonable price!

By Elizabeth G |

We were in NYC for a book fair and wanted a nearby restaurant for dinner. How fortunate we were to have selected Toloache! The food was very good. We had the trio cerviche and it was delicious especially the fluke. We followed that by the lobster tacos and pork carnitas tacos, equally well prepared and finished off our meal with the trio dessert which was fabulous and more than enough for two. Hard to imagine but the creative cocktails exceeded the food. Both spicy tequilla based drinks were very good and then we experimented. I has a mezcal and pineapple drink which I thoroughly enjoyed. (First time drinking mezcal) My husband enjoyed a spicy drink with lager. The best by far however was out waiter Marcos. The restaurant was full and the severs were busy but we received the kind of friendly and individualized service that usually comes with much more expensive restaurants. Last but not insignificant, the prices were very reasonable even compared to other less costly metropolitan areas. Thank you for a evening full of fun and good food and drinks.

Happy Bellies!

By Camphorn |

My wife, 2 kids and I stopped here in need of guac and chips and this place more than met our needs. We also included a margarita, shrimp tacos and a cheese quesadilla. My kids usually don't comment on the food unless asked. I didn't have to ask. They raved as much as my wife and I did about the margaritas. The service was A1 and the managment made a visit to the table at the right time (after we have had a chance to take a bit or two!) as it should be. We loved it so much we went back the next day. The building is very non descript from the outside but if you have the option sit on the back deck. Cool stuff....

Great!

What a super place. Found it by accident and glad we did. Nice, clean ambience. Great service and our food was terrific. I will definitely be back again!

Nice surprise for a day in the city lunch

By JohnC |

My wife found this place after reading reviews after a day trip to the Met. The place was pleasant with nice decor. Staff was pleasant and even folded the napkins when guests got up. This surprised me as I usually only see that in high end restaurants. The prices aren't cheap but the decor gives a casual vibe. The menu is creative, attention and thought seem to be given to food and drink. My daughter ordered a lemonade and it seemed fresh with limes in the glass. I was expecting just something out of the bottle. There was a good assortment of guacamole where normally I see one. We choose the fruit guacamole which had pomegranates seeds. It was quite good the fruit really brightened up the guacamole. The salsa was delicious I couldn't stop eating it. I thought I tasted chipotle and the waiter later confirmed there was roasted chipotle. My daughter ordered grasshoppers tacos and it was surprisingly good as I sampled it. The grasshoppers seemed lightly fried and had a crispy texture. It seems odd but if you are adventurous and don't think about it, it's quite good. I had a manchego cheese quesadillas . It was also quite good. It was hard to decide what to order as there were many interesting items. I think I went for the manchego cheese because its normally $12a lb and I don't usually buy it in the market. Im not in that area that often but I would definitely go back if I was. Overall as really nice place for a lunch that isn't basic.

A Mexican Feast

By NickL898 |

We had a great meal at Toloache. Great veggie selection and very tasty meat dishes too. Cheerful service and good recommendations for those like us who are a bit new to Mexican food. It is a bit on the expensive side, especially if you indulge in their dangerously good Margaritas!

Fantastic Food and Service

By Elizabeth W |

I booked this restaurant through Open Table and received a confirmation email, but for some reason the restaurant didn't seem to have the booking. They managed to give us a good table upstairs and the food and service was not disappointing, I have never tasted guacamole like it, it was delicious, as was the soup and the main dishes which we had chicken.

Don't try to have a conversation!

By kathryn f |

The food is okay, portions are small. The service is excellent. However, I will not be returning as the noise level is so overwhelming it gives you a headache and prevents any enjoyment of the food or your dinner companion.

More Creative Mexican

By Robert T |

If you are tired of the usual Mexican fare with tacos, burritos , rice and beans, Toloache is a great change of pace. The rooms is nice, being broken up into several smaller spaces give a sense of more intimacy and a bit quieter. There is also a private backyard outdoor space in better weather. They have a full bar but you are best off with one of their many margaritas. They tend to run on the tart side but are quite good. For a starter the guacamole comes in three different spice levels or you can get a sampler of all three. Chips and warm and made in house. The Ceviches are especially good so you might want to try a few of those as an entree. There is a separate vegetarian menu but it is not vegan friendly. All of the offerings other than salads have some dairy in them but the Paella de Quinoa is very good if you can do the dairy. What sets Toloache apart are dishes like the Branzino a la Talla, which is adobo and cilantro rubbed, with chipotle cabbage slaw, hand pressed tortilla and salsa verde or the Costilla del Re, beef short ribs, sun choke pure, mushrooms and mezcal-seven chiles salsa. These are a nice change from the usual. The prices are not low but neither is the quality. Worth a visit.

Brunch

Great brunch on upper east side. Went for mothers day and were impressed. We have enjoyed dinner here many times but this was the first for brunch.

Fantastic

By Laura B |

Stopped in for lunch on Sunday. It was fantastic. The margarita was amazing. Highly recommend the Atun: A tuna and watermelon Cheviche'!! Yummy. The Saudero tacos were to die for. Smoked Brisket: need I say more. The guacamole was great. I can not say enough good things. Go, EAT!!!

After a visit to the Metropolitan

By giantsfan11 |

After spending the afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum we were looking for a neighborhood restaurant to have an early dinner. trip Advisor's near me now, showed this Mexican Restaurant on nearby 82nd St. We had been to the Toloache in the Theatre District some years back and enjoyed it so thought we'd try the upper east side version. The guacamole and chips were some of the tastiest we've had. We had a simple meal of shrimp quesadilla and chicken enchiladas. Both were very well prepared with lots of flavor. Will definitely return should we be in the neighborhood again.
