Fabulous Chinese restaurant on the upper west side

By 943rons |

We had been missing a really good Chinese restaurant on the upper west side, and now we have one! Excellent food, pleasant service, reasonable prices—we will be back!

Tri Dim West: Chinese Restaurant on Columbus Ave in NYCity

By Michael |

Tri Dim opened just a few months ago, in the spot where there had been anothrer Chinese restaurant (called 'Canteen'). Tri Dim is far superior in several respects. It is far and away the best Chinese restaurant in the Upper West Side. There is a large selection of dishes, all well prepared with excellent ingredients; there is also a substantial wine list. The various beef (Szechuan and other regional cuisines) and fish dishes are excellent. The portions are extremely generous, so my wife and I end up asking for a "doggie bag" so we can use the portions we didn't have room for - for tomorrow's lunch. The ambience is most pleasant. The prices are quite reasonable. They also serve appetizers like spring rolls and soups - all delicious and also generous in portion-size. At the end of the meal I get to say to one of the Chinese waiters: wei dao hao ji le - which means in Mandarin Chinese: "the meal was very good." I probably don't get the tones right, but the waiters are gracious and don't look askance at my mispronunciation.

Nice dim sum spot

Excellent service and super attentive. Dining room had a nice atmosphere for a family dinner. Dim sum was acceptable and other dishes were decent.

Tri Dim Delivers!!!

By DimitriSaliani |

I had the pleasure of going here a couple of times in the past week and was impressed by the menu and the service each time. We were immediately greeted and sat at a table in the back dining room, which can be mostly private or lively, especially as there are some larger tables back there. We had the xiao long bao, both pork and crab and they were nicely prepared and flavored, with the traditional vinegar served and we carefully navigated getting them off the paper in the dim sum steamer and onto the soup spoon. Warm, brothy and tasty! We had some shumai and pan seared pork dumplings that also were nicely prepared. As we were celebrating a special occasion we had a dish off the menu, scallion and ginger crab. It was expertly prepared and the delicate crab and the tasty sauce mixed well together. The standout dishes continued with the dry sautéed crispy shredded beef, the Tingling Curry Chicken hot casserole, and the red cooked short ribs in Hang Chow style being ultimate comfort food in the cold weather. The Shanghai fried rice was also top notch as an accompaniment or could be a main course. We had some pea shoots as well as some water spinach (off the menu). Both brought clean, bright flavors and some greens to the mix, though the beef ribs come with some greens as well. Service was attentive and the water glasses and tea cups were kept full throughout our meals. It is an excellent, traditional Shanghainese restaurant and the casserole recipes have been handed down from generation to generation, bringing deep, wonderful flavors, as they are slow cooked to perfection.

Two for lunch

By Ned M |

Today I ate lunch with a friend at this modestly priced exceptional super dim sum eating place. We chose to order the specialty, the din sum. The buns came perfectly prepared, not doughy with copious fillings, the quality easily rivaling any Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown. I have had had dim sum in Hong Kong and this was as good as anything I ate there.. The restaurant's decor is appealing and the interior was airy with tablecloths on every table. Each of us received two of four different dim sum. At the waiter's suggestion we had four different stuffings, two with differently prepared shrimp, one with vegetable and another with minced pork. Once we finished with one serving the waiter brought a second, freshly heated, third and fourth which were piled one on top of another . At the end of the meal my friend asked if we could have lunch again there at in another two weeks. I will also definitely come back with my wife. Its so nice to have a great new Chinese restaurant like this in our neighborhood.

A great gem near Museum of Natural History

By Jintlaw |

My daughter and I walked in to this place extremely hungry and not knowing anything about the food here. We were incredibly delighted by the atmosphere, friendly waitstaff, and incredible Dim Sum. Lots of dishes to choose from and everything we had was amazing. Highly Recommend!

The chef is extraordinarily good, the atmosphere is so -so

By Rhoda D |

I had Chinese pea pod tips with garlic, and braised bean curd with black mushrooms to which I added chilis to. Both dishes were both cooked to perfection, which is rare. They make a mean cocktail and the wine was just fine. The place is a bit dark and the management hovers a bit, even tho' there were only 3 tables sitting at the time (it was early), we were all plonked together for their convenience and could hear each other's conversations. That shouldn't happen, the wait staff should value diners' privacy and walk a little to sit them apart.

A great choice for museum-goers

A few blocks away from the American Museum of Natural History and just across the park from THE MET. Delicious food with many choices. The Monday-Friday lunch special has a huge menu and great prices. Excellent service, too.

Consistently good

By PukkaWorld |

We have had home delivery from here many times and it is consistently good. The Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings and Shredded Crispy Duck are particularly good and we really like their Spumoni Bomba, though very Italian. I've done pick-up there and the place looks welcoming inside and the staff very friendly, so we look forward to eating in one day.

Disappointed

By travlin'cook |

Disappointed.....I ordered a spicy Szechuan sauce for my veggies and it was sweet and sour with no spice whatsoever. Portions were extremely small for the diced chicken with trio nuts and the soup was very gelatinous.

Fabulous addition to UWS

By Sue K |

Our meal was nothing short of excellent--food was superb with an extensive but not mundane menu, staff was friendly without being annoying, great service. My glass of savignon blanc was so good that I took a picture of the bottle. PLEASE support this restaurant. There are many Chinese restaurants on the UWS that range from NG to good. This one stands out in every way. Try the pan seared pork dumplings and 1/2 shredded duck (just like peking duck but without bones and a smaller portion).

Extensive dim sum choices

By traveler2703D |

The regular menu is very good, but it's the dim sum choices that make this place a standout. You and your companion could easily have a great and varied meal simply by ordering 5 or 6 items off the dim sum menu, maybe more because they're that good. We live close by and are looking forward to eating our way through the menu! The noodle dishes are very good as are the vegetarian choices too.

Gone downhill

By Kai S |

Good has deteriorated. Slippery chicken was gummy and the sauce was gelatinous. The ribs had no taste nor did the noodles. This is not the place it used to be.

Prices have increased substantially if you have a old takeout menu!

By LisaCPW |

Let me say first that I went to the restaurant and ordered takeout and the food was good. What wasn’t great was that I must have had a old menu and the prices have gone up by a lot, e.g. the Peking Duck went from $52 to $58, plus they charge an extra 3% if you use a credit card. With tax and the cc charge that brought it to $65.00 which is $8.50 more than I expected. The fried rice went from $13.00 to $15.00. I need to find an UWS Chinese resto that’s good, but more reasonable.

Delicious but expensive

By mshope40 |

You will have to decide between cost and food quality in this case.We have ordered from this restaurant 4 or 5 times now. This food is really tasty and freshly made. They don’t concentrate on very spicy cooking. There’s a whole lot of non-spicy dishes if you’re like me. Their hot and sour soup can be eaten by anyone! However, the prices are noticeably higher than the restaurants in the same neighborhood. Lunch specials go for $9.95 and $10.95, and include soup OR spring roll. Most local restaurants do much better than that.

Ordered Takeout

By tian s |

We had takeout. There are numerous seafood dishes, such as Grand Marinier Prawns and various different kinds of meat (including pineapple pork sweet and sour). Sauteed vegetables in what appears to a white wine sauce are good. As well as desert, which included a sort of red bean cake.

When General Tso comes a calling.......

By garyp281 |

Friend came to NY for a few days - crazing General Tso Chicken. Can't get it anywhere like it tastes on the Upper West Side - and Tri Dim, which replaced another Asian Restaurant, replicated beloved freshness and delicious recipe of this renown Chicken dish. We started with pan-seared dumplings and added a string bean side dish. Perfect dinner.

Great meal on last night in NYC

By ORCon |

We ate outside and had a very enjoyable meal. We had spring rolls, dumplings, soup and a large Shanghai noodle dish with pork. Great mushrooms and sauces to choose from. I had a glass of plum wine. The service was outstanding. My husband saw the nice guy serving us share some soup with a homeless guy. We live in Oregon. This was my favorite meal in nyc.

New

The lunch special was good and a very good price. The service was ordinary. This is a new restaurant and I look forward to trying more dishes. It's a clean and friendly place.

Excellent Dim Sum Lunch

By Justin W |

I had passed Tri Dim West many times but due to COVID it had been closed for dining. It is now open and the food and service are excellent. I made a trip to the restaurant right after visiting the Museum of Natural History which is right around the corner and it is a nice alternative to chicken fingers. I had a wonderful Dim Sum lunch off their menu. I had the Roast Pork Buns, the Chicken Curry Buns, the Peking Duck rolls and the Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings and everything was delicious. The Curry Puffs tasted like a version of a Samosa with the light curried filling. The Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings were made to order and tasted amazing with the soy dipping sauce. Once you bite into them, they burst in your mouth. The Roast Pork buns were steamed and had a nice, sweet flavor due to the roasted pork mix. The service could not have been more attentive and friendly. The place is not cheap but it is worth it.
