Great food, beautiful restaurant

By DCoro |

First international opening of this Japanese restaurant, lucky for us they chose New York, food is great, in the Japanese tradition everything is plated beautifully, if you want the same food anywhere in NY you would have to pay double!, if you go at 5:00 p.m. you would have a chance to get a table quickly, otherwise, make a reservation or be ready to wait a lot for a table. On my first visit we had the spicy tuna tartare cones, seared wagyu sushi (uni on top), tatsuta fried chicken, duck udon and beef udon, every dish was great. They just have to work more on their dessert options.

Good Noodles, Mixed Experience

By Ian N |

A good bowl of noodles. BUT slow service, annoying host reservation nazis, too much pomp and circumstance going along with a bowl of noodles. This is just a noodle shop. Turn tables faster, save the multi-course displays for real japanese restaurants. No need for the bartender in the bowtie with the beard. NYC has too many glorified noodle shops... Noodle "Brasserie" c'mon. NYC just needs a good fast bowl of noodles.

prices are not worth the quality

By Melanie T |

Prices are not really worth the quality. Three friends and I came in for dinner on a Tuesday night at 6:30. We didn't have to wait but the place is pretty big, and I'm not sure how busy it gets on a Friday/Saturday night. Service was quick - the food came out pretty quickly after we ordered. I went with the Uni Cream Udon in hot broth. There was one piece of uni on top in the middle, and that was pretty much it. The broth didn't really taste like udon, more like cream. In fact, it was a little too creamy and heavy. It should have been called 'creamy udon with a singular piece of uni on top' instead. It definitely wasn't worth the $24. Their other menu items seemed pretty pricey as well and I'm not exactly sure why. It's not like Tsurutontan is fine dining. IMO, you can get the same quality for a lower price tag elsewhere.

Big Bowls of Udon

By TheLeongOhana |

We came here on a snowy NYC evening and warmed ourselves up with their big bowls of udon. This location was was huge with multiple floors versus the more traditional one we last ate in Kyoto. The large menu covered sushi, rice bowls and of course a large variety of udons from cremes, curries, traditional and upscale truffles and wagyu beef. From Monday through Friday there was a happy hour discount (a couple bucks off) on most of the appetizers and udon bowls menu. The wagyu beef udon was so rich and a standout with truffles. The regular beef udon also was good. Noodles were chewy and plentiful in a dashi broth. The tempura was lightly fried and one of the tastier tempuras we’ve eaten in awhile. Served on the side, it came with shrimp, sweet potato, shiitake and enoki mushrooms, seaweed. Service overall was quick and good. Next time will come during happy hour.

Great food, uncertain service

By Thomas André J |

Had a bowl of udon noodles, with a maki dish for starters. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the noodle servings were huge. It took a fair bit of time for the servers to notice we were done, and they took way too long getting our payment, but this seems to be a pretty new place, so here's hoping a litte bit of experience will help them along! The food was really great.

Tasty Udon

By LnS2004 |

Based on our great dining experience in Tokyo, we made sure to try out this chain's US outpost while visiting NYC. We chose the newer midtown location closer to our hotel. The huge interior with multiple levels is clean and well appointed. Michael, our server, was friendly and attentive. All the udons we tried were delicious with chewy noodles and savory broth. I loved my Deluxe signature house special. The tan tan was another standout. The tempura was light and crispy. The regular size noodle serving was more than filling (large @no extra we were told). A very enjoyable Sunday lunch.

Large portions, delicious noodles

By Alyssa E |

I went here for dinner with a group of four on a Friday night. We did need to have a reservation, and I get the sense that's very common in NYC (I was staying with friends and have not lived in the city myself). Anyway, the service was splendid and I love that the larger portion of noodles is available at no extra cost. I had the sukiyaki udon, and the waitress was kind enough to clarify ingredients for all of us at the table. Mine was delicious, and the rest of the girls really enjoyed their meals. I wish it was cheaper but you can't help NYC pricing. Also, the staff got flustered/annoyed when we had an unexpected friend join us and order a drink, and the servers said something about their policy. She wasn't eating so I'm not sure why it was a big deal, and the booth was more than big enough, and we didn't split the bill onto a billion credit cards, so maybe they just have space limits or something. But the atmosphere was lovely and the food excellent, so I will be taking friends here this summer when I return to NYC!

Great find for udon

By Neesha D |

We were wandering around looking for a late lunch when a stranger residing in the area recommended Tsuru Ton Tan. Turned out to be just what we needed. The place serves udon noodles in HUGE soup bowls that can be quite intimidating. The regular and large sizes cost the same - only the quantity of noodles changes. The regular size is tough for one person to finish. We were 7 of us and we ordered 5 types of udon. While everyone was happy with the choices they made the one that stood out was the beef and truffle best seller. One of us was vegetarian and ordered the shisito peppers and the charred mushrooms. The mushrooms were so good that the were gobbled up by others at the table and we needed more. I had some wagyu strip steak which didn’t make the cut. Stick to the udon and you will not be disappointed.

Great sushi/udon combo

By Kasia’s Travel |

Came in for a soup and ended up with an unexpected sushi plate. And it was excellent. It included uni, a rare piece of in a lunch special in NY. After sushi, little room was for udon. The broth was a bit salty but overall, it was and excellent meal.

Busy place for lunch

By Foodieholic |

We were here on Columbus Day and boy was the place crowded. It took a while to get there because of the nearby parade rendering the street almost impossible to access unless on foot. There were 7 of us and we ordered the fried chicken, the seared salmon and snow crab roll, tuna avocado roll, crispy corn, cold uni don, katsu don, katsu curry, mentaiko ankake udon, beef udon and sizzling sukiyaki udon. You can choose large portion of udon noodles or small. The portions were huge and needless to say, we had loads of leftovers even though we had opted for the small portion of noodles and two of us even shared a bowl. The udon which I enjoyed the most was the cold uni udon (thin noodle). Overall, it was a nice experience and everyone had a great time. Service was friendly and prompt. Hope to go back again soon!

great food great service

By Dylan T |

This place is a great place to go to eat a casual meal with friends and family. It is a great price for the quality and portion of food. The ramen bowls are enormous and taste amazing and with two or three rolls of sushi it is the perfect amount to fill you up. The menu was varied and had lots of cool and different options to eat. In my opinion I think that this is a great all around restaurant that I would eat at again. The staff was kind and attentive, I would recommend this place to anybody who likes ramen/udon/sushi or wants to try something new that is a fun experience.

Very chic good food long wait

By dmrxox |

We wanted noodle soup and this was close by. They said 30 minutes so we gave our name, not a phone number and dat at bar. Excellent service , great drinks. They obviously lost us, if we hadn't asked about our table we never would have been seated. Once sat we ordered right away it was 10:30 and we were tired and hungry. We liked the atmosphere, though it was New York noisy. Very tastefully decorated. We waited a long time, again. We think the waiter lost our order; after asking about our food we got an apology for the long wait and pretty soon after the food arrived. The chicken udon soup was delicious as was my husbands nabeyaki udon. We left at midnight We would definitely return but make sure they have your name in the computer and your order in the kitchen!

Amazing Udon

By Evan F |

The food is probably more that you were expecting. Since you can't take any away with you, you'll want to eat every late bite. In addition to a delicious spicy udon we enjoyed the cucumber salad and grilled duck. The salad was light and refreshing, the duck ever so succulent.

Bait and switch

By dtraveler16 |

This place has been going downhill. They now run this $1.99/draft to desperately attract customers. It is supposed to run all day on weekends at the bar. On the day we visited, they refused to honor it, because we sat in the wood section of the bar, which they call “the counter.” It’s connected with the marble section, with coolers beneath, but hey, they don’t call it “a bar.” We talked to 2 managers in a row as well as the waiter, and they were rudely adamant about their own definition of a “bar.” It’s pretty sad to see a struggling business to resort to these bait and switch tactics. We were regulars, but will never go back. Avoid at all costs.

Homemade noodles sound like this...

By Margaret H |

@TsuruTonTan "Tsuru"--The sound of slurping noodles "Ton"--The sound of kneading and shaping udon "Tan"--The sound of cutting udon These three sounds embody the spirit of the finest, handmade udon. The other sound was of my teenage daughter singing along to Whitney Houston while she slurped that entire huge bowl down. The hostess was willing to seat the two of us without a reservation at 5:45 pm but she did not seem very happy. I don't know if something else bothering her. But our wait staff was the warmest and most professional person we could have asked for. Price was reasonable for the Union Square area.

Big servings and tasty food

By Mark B |

Went with friends on a Friday night — we made a reservation ahead of time, and it the place was popular and the line out the door when we left. Appetizers were very tasty — the dumplings served with a nice spicy sauce, and the fried chicken starter crunchy and tasty, with a spicy soy sauce. I say spicy, I think for most Americans it will be very spicy, for me it was nicely spicy, and if you are used to hot spices, then only mild. They can adjust the spice level a bit. Most main courses are noodles in broth with other items. Big servings in big bowls. My particular broth was thick and creamy, and prefect spice level for me, strong enough to really enjoy, but not so strong that it overpowers all flavor and enjoyment. YMMV. Tip: Unless you have a huge appetite, plan for just 2 courses, or just one if you have a light appetite.

It tastes terrible.

By motonori s |

Do not order Tsurutontan Delax & Sukiyaki Udon!! It tastes terrible... Noodle was too soft...and soup was not hot enough...

Misleading Happy Hour Pricing

By austan2017 |

First, I live about one block away and have eaten here about every third month since it opened. Today was my first time for a quick mid-afternoon snack and I only entered because the sign on the sidewalk says $6 sushi as part of their happy hour pricing. After getting the bill, we find out that most the items we ordered on the happy hour menu are twice that amount! I would have appreciated some upfront advertising and next time my friends want to grab noodles, I will suggest we take our $ elsewhere. Tsurutontan - how about changing the sign on the sidewalk?

Enjoyable

By NikonGlass |

Greeted promptly and seated at our reserved time. Attentive waitress. Clear menu with pics. Good variety and reasonable prices for NYC. Sake, entree and two shared desserts for 4 people was about $30pp. The water cake dessert is surprisingly better than it sounds.

Did not live up to expectations

By Anonymous A |

Was initially quite excited to go to this restaurant after seeing a review on Insider new york, but was disappointed. Had high expectations of portion size after seeing the such big bowls, but the content inside did not match. The price was on the more expensive side as well, but the large sizes are the same price as regular. Food was tasty, though a bit on the salty side. Service was great, staff were very friendly, and the restaurant had a great decor and atmosphere.

The Ghosts of Union Square Cafe would not be unhappy

By Mark K |

It looks so different yet the bones are there if you've been to what was once NYC's #1 restaurant the USC. The Udon is excellent but be sure to get it with the proper noodles whether you like it cold or hot. Nice vibe, lots more space than you might think. Not expensive by NYC standards. Worth a trip.

Beautiful place, great food, definitely worth while!

By Pablo M |

To me this is a place that combines a beautifully done interior design, good straight-forward food, all at decent prices. A opposed to some of the prior reviews, we had a great waiter who was quick and with a good attitude. Yes it is just a noodle place, but what counts is the total package and execution which provides for a nice experience. I would definitely come back!

Been meaning to come, happy we finally did

By Stephen N |

We were downtown today running errands around Union Square and were getting hungry and were thinking about where to eat when the girlfriend said how about that new ramen place that we've been talking about that. So we walked over and decided to go in to Tsurutontan. Very happy we did. The menu was fairly extensive and everything that everybody around us ordered looked and smelled so good. The first thing our server asked us when he greeted us was if any of us had any food allergies and I told him shrimp. He let us know that there was only 1 thing on the menu they couldn't adjust for me but everything else they could. I thought this was just 1 example of the overall great customer service you'll encounter here. We ordered the sukiyaki buns and silken tofu for apps and a mango sangria and old fashioned for cocktails which came first. We then ordered 2 udons - my girlfriend had the sukiyaki udon and I had the uni, scallop and tobiko udon. They came in giant bowls that added to the showiness a little. The food was all very, very good. Tofu was flavorful, uni was from California, udon was thick and hearty, broth was full of flavor. I also ordered the mackeral sashimi but they were out so I got the scallop sashimi. Our server explained the scallops were from Hokkaido which is why they are so good - sweet and buttery. Our water glasses were always full, our server and the rest of the staff who helped asked on a few occasions how we were doing, how the food tasted and if we needed anything. According to my receipt, our main server was Anderson and he definitely deserves our kudos - he's a dead ringer for our friend Craig and an extremely good, knowledgeable and attentive waiter. With tax, tip, 2 cocktails, 3 apps, 2 mains - the bill was about 150 bucks - not cheap but quality Japanese food with a great waitstaff is always worth it.

Noodles but no doggie bags

By Deborah C |

We walked in without a reservation and were told it was a twenty - thirty minute wait for a table, so we waited, and as promised we were seated within thirty minutes of our arrival. The wait was worth it. The noodles are made fresh, and the ingredients are first rate. It's a little loud, but not so you can't hear your tablemate. There's a full bar if you're interested. The prices are comparable to other Japanese restaurants, and I think you get good value for what you get.

Great food, but way to rigerous

By Inger A |

I rated TsuruTonTan before on TripAdvisor because I loved it so much! The food, experience and overall charm. I visited again this week with friends and I felt very different. The food is still great but we had a few different elements this time: 1) It was pouring rain and we got there on time for our reservation. The host would not seat us even if we said we would start ordering food, drinks (apparently policy of the manager). So we had to stand in the waiting area until our last person arrived. 2) The wine pours are really small. When I asked the waitress about it she said they measure them and are not allowed to go above, beyond the exakt measure (apparently policy of the manager). So it seems that they are generous with the food, but cheap with the drinks. 3) One of us got our food 15 minutes before the others so it got cold. When we asked our waitress, they said it gets served as it is prepared. But the experience is so much better if the main dishes come at the same time so we can all eat together. I was really disappointed with this visit and will think twice before bringing guests here again.

Noodles were ok

By Violetta T |

I had heard some great things about this place but after going with several of my coworkers the service and dishes were disappointing

Reservations don’t mean much here

By Shawn H |

Even if you make a reservation expect to wait a while, has happened on every occasion. Don’t bother showing up without one.

Still thinking about the food

By Pochums |

I'm three days into my trip to nyc and normally write my reviews when I get home but when I wake up thinking about the food I had last night I feel compelled to tell you about it ASAP. We went on a Saturday night and the place was packed. The restaurant is large, modern with a great decor. We started with the spicy tuna cones, tofu burrata and a sushi. The tuna was delicious. Crispy cone with soft tasty tuna filling. The sushi roll was amazing. Topped with three kinds of fish and drizzled with truffle oil the flavours totally work and blew me away. We tried both the cold and hot udon. The noodles are made in house and are the perfect consistency. The flavours are excellent. I woke up thinking about the mentaiko caviar udon this morning! Get it with the thin noddles. The sizziling sukiyaki udon was also very good. Thick dry bouncy noodles packed with flavour. I have another 7 days in NYC and I'm definitely planning to go back!

Very good, but service is too slow

By rbravo |

The place looks very nice and it has a cool atmosphere. The food is very good. There are a lot of choices available. It is not cheap, but it is not bad value for money, considering that the portions are very generous. In fact, they are so big, that I would be unable to eat any appetizer. My only complain is that we had to wait about 30 minutes for our food. I am not sure why it took so long. The place was packed, but still, a 30-minute wait for a bowl of noodles is just too long. I would be happy to go back, but I think they need to improve their service.

Love this concept, fantastic Udon

By natchouii |

If you are a fan of udon, this is the place to be. They have a wide choice of udon, different soup/ meat. We were seated on the counter, and you had people eating in front of you. Quite funny experience. They also have table but you should book in advance. When the udon soup arrived, it was serve in a huge bowl, and they also give you a big spoon. So you could eat easily. It was a bit pricey for a noodle soup when I saw the menu, but they give you a lot. So it was worth it! Honestly, everything was very good.

Pleasant noodles near Union Square

By SaW43 |

They have a variety of broth dishes with noodles. The restaurant is in the space that used to contain Danny Meyer's Union Square Cafe. Now it is dimly lit with interesting denim on one wall. Still reasonably quiet. The soup was pleasant but in the quantity of meat or fish swimming in it.

Very welcome addition to NYC Dining Scene

By Comandante-of-Fun |

Thrilled to have this famed Japanese chain in NYC, taking over the old Union Square Cafe with a tastefully decorated decor (very creative use of wood). Love the supreme classic (with meat and tempura) and the cold udon with soba. The larger (priced the same as the small) come in enormous bowls. Try a Lady M cake for dessert.

Fantastic Udon!

By Miguel P |

This place is so good. A couple of days after my visit and just writing this review makes me hungry. Staff is friendly and explain the menu very well. I'm not a fan of menus with pictures on them, I find it cheesy and tacky. But this place takes good advantage of this, the menu makes you want to order everything. Vast selection of Udon. My wife had the Spicy udon, I ordered a creamy corn parmesan udon with truffle oil. Interesting mix and yummy. For starters, cucumber in sesame vinaigrette and toro, uni with caviar nigiri. The staff and most of the patrons were Japanese. Good food!!

Very limited for non-meat eaters

By adventix |

If you are a vegetarian or a pescatarian you will have just one option of udon. All the other options are made with chicken or beef broth and this can not be substitute. It was very disappointing as this is not mentioned in their online menu. We ended up having some sushi which was nothing special and the rice to fish ratio was too big.

Amazing and Wow!

By Ilogjr |

Great selection and huge portions. Various kinds of broth and additions to the udon soup. Two size portions regular and large. And the regular was huge! Had the curry wagyu beef and it was delicious. Also tried their temaki and they have a unique presentation. Highly recommend this place.

Great service

By MauiPlease |

Service was top notch. Surprisingly I think everything we tried was delicious. Udon was good but I actually liked their appetizers and sushi more. I would definitely return to enjoy drinks and apps. When ordering udon you have a couple options; thin or thick udon, recommended for cold or hot options respectively; regular or large, same price. It is tempting to order the large, but regular is more than enough.

Amazing! Great value

By Elle C |

Absolutely loved this restaurant! They do a large variety of udon noodles and sushi - it was hard to decide! We had a delicious selection of starters, followed by udon - served in huge portions. You're able to choose what size you'd like but the upgrade to large is free! For dessert had we had a stack of green tea crepes served with traditional red bean paste and green tea ice cream - delicious! The servers were very attentive and helpful. Would definitely come back here again

Excellent!

By tgrigori |

Delicious food and excellent service in a comfortable, modern but cozy atmosphere. We loved it! Definitely try the Tan Tan Udon if you enjoy a rich, spicy broth with thick noodles. I would go back just for that!

Oh yeah!!

By Josh D |

I am a rising udon addict!! I just had it last Sunday at a place in Brooklyn (but I didn’t like it that much) and I had it again Saturday!! This place was probably 200 times better!! The restaurant was very fancy because they had blue jeans on the wall and a lot of different kinds of seating!! I got the beef udon and the bowl was huge and very good!! The noodles were so fat that they need to go on extreme weight loss (which I used to watch back in 6th grade with my sister)!! This is now my favorite udon place and I am going to daydream about it until I go there next!!

Excellent quality of noodles

By dgfvsxz |

It should go without saying that their noodles are great quality since that is their specialty, but it will still surprise you how good these noodles are. The portions are very generous, with their soup spoons the size of ladles. Interesting presentations as well, such as grinding your own sesame seeds to make a paste in a tiny Japanese mortar. Just make sure you go with a big appetite. I don't know if this rule is still in effect now, but I remember there being a notice saying something like they don't pack up what you don't eat. So if you think you can just pick at your meal then take your leftovers home, it will just go to waste. If you think about it though, it makes sense since these noodles are made to be eaten right away, and they'll only get mushy if sitting in the soup. And don't forget to order the water cake! So interesting and delicious too!

Health Grade B

By Mymilesandsmiles |

I come here at least twice a month with my girlfriends for 2 reasons: 1- Bar has Happy hour all day 2- Food is pretty tasty and inexpensive – just be AWARE they received *GRADE B* (eewww) Now lets move on to the NOT SO GOOD part – Bartender is the grumpiest/ slowest person alive (or at least in NYC!). Bar is ALWAYS empty and still takes him about 10 – 15min to take our orders and he always place our drinks all together in front of one of us (we are usually 4 people!!) leaving to us the job of distributing You are probably asking why do we keep going back right? Answer is pretty simple, we go to the gym next door and is just a lazy option for us to grab a cheap drink/ catch up before heading home.

Odd seating but very yummy

By Erin S |

I went here with a friend for dinner. We were placed at the center seating in the downstairs area. It was a bit cramped but the main reason for us going was to eat. The food was very good. The waitress was very knowledgable and everything tastes and smells delicious! Perfect for warming up a cold day!

Lost In Translation: Japanese Authenticity

By da Gama |

TsuruTonTan is just not a good price/taste/value experience, IMHO. As a Japanese restaurant (subtitled an "Udon Noodle Brasserie" -- a giveaway!) that promotes itself on its Tokyo origins, you would expect authenticity, but TTT has been thoroughly Americanized. The exception is the traditional dashi broth, which is tasty but not wonderful. None of this matters, apparently, since they seem to be a runaway success! So if the real deal is not what you're seeking, then, to be fair, you may love TTT! Beware sake prices, which are more highly inflated than usual, with bottles hovering in the $80-$90 range and up! They offer no carafes, either, which is a traditional Japanese option. I know of other, better, more authentic, more fairly-priced Japanese udon restaurant options offering tastier food, in NYC. I will be going to these places instead.

Average

By AshL |

The appetizer food tastes better than the entrees. But overall the taste level does not match the price level. The other reason that I won't go back to visit is that the bartender had really bad service attitude. Maybe he had a bad day in his personal life, but he shouldn't bring the attitude to work. That's very unprofessional. I don't live in NYC so I don't know what's the common service level at all the bars in NYC. At least that's not acceptable in where I'm from. Our server, on the other hand, was nice and sweet. If I ever choose to visit again, I will definitely avoid the bar service.

Pretense Japanese Restaurant with awful service.

By Hege M |

If only no stars was an option! Me and my husband always meet for dinner Friday nights in the Union Square area after work, and we could have gone to one of our favorite places like Casa Mono and Bar Jamon on Irving Place, or the lovely ABC Cocina, the amazing Tarallucci e Vino, Craftbar, Blue Water Grill or Barn Joo in the immediate area. All beloved places to meet and gather with friends and make great memories. Establishments that always makes you feel welcome and never disappoints with great food and drinks. But we made the enormous mistake and ventured to Tsuru Ton Tan. We may have been there for an hour and it wasn't so bad until we were told to leave before we were done with dessert and drinks after having spent $150 in the counter area seating, because they needed the "table". Their website advertises "forgotten elegance", "a place for everyone to gather" along with "great hospitality and service", because "they strive to create a pleasurable experience for their guests". All fluff! Clearly these people don't want repeat customers or wish to be a neighborhood joint. And we will make sure colleges and friends know what this establishment is all about; get you in and get you out. We will never set foot in this pretense establishment ever again. Should you be jonesing for Japanese food, there are plenty and far better restaurants in the area that would more than welcome your business. What a humiliation, waste of time and money!

Big modern noodle restaurant

By Jeremy W |

Big modern place serving excellent noodle and other Japanese cuisine. Extensive menu and friendly staff. The food was great and vast, the standard size Nabeyaki Udon noodle soup dish would have been fine for two.

Noodles and more

By DB L |

A big restaurant in this area with great service and noodles in huge bowls! A very good dinner with the family.

Delicious

By A.M |

The food was good, I got the sukiyaki udon and my daughter got the tempura udon. The tempura was nice and crispy and has good flavor. I normally don't order sukiyaki when getting udon but I wanted to try it...it was delicious. Portions were generous. The one star docked is because the person who brought us to our table rudely said they were extremely overbooked on reservations and we needed to be out within 90 minutes. We would've been done anyway but that isn't the best way to give a good first impression when seating diners. If you like udon, this is the place for you! (They do have a lot of other things on the menu as well)

Go alone, so you don't feel embarrassed about how fast you eat the noodles...

By Roberto Serrini |

Yo. I’m Italian. Noodles? Yeah I got your noodles right here. Lemme tell you. Tsuru make some lip smacking strings of delight that even my Sorrentina Momma would get down with. This udon joint, on 16th just west of Union Square, took over a beloved space which shall go unmentioned, and opened its slick, modern subterranean interior to the hungry masses of NYC this winter. The old tenant, despite it’s Godlike status, I doubt it will be missed as the noodles here are made on site, by hand, and can’t get in your face fast enough. Flavor? Oh heck yeah. I had the Sukiyaki for lunch. The waitress asked if I wanted thin or fat noodles. Pro tip: ask for extra fat. She just nodded with that wink cool kids give you and shuffled off. In a few minutes before me was presented a beautiful bowl, the kind you would buy your girlfriend for a birthday if you were planing on staying together with her. Inside was sizzling, yo, SIZZLING noodles in thick sauce. scattered pieces of tender meat, woodsy mushrooms, bright scallions, and were those perfectly caramelized onions like they hijacked an In-and-Out burger? Yeah, yeah they were. On top… a golden orb of a perfectly fresh egg yolk. Lets begin. Mixing it up we get the creamy consistency of really good Roman carbonara. The smell, sweet and sultry, and the texture, dear Lord, the texture like one of those memory foam pillows you can eat. The flavor is out of this world, familiar and foreign, kinda like a Philly Cheese steak done by Jean Georges. We all know it’s master Tomoya Tamaru rocking the taste buds, and this his first US extension of his well-known Japanese noodle joint will hopefully be a Union Square staple for a while. Given the busy crowd of 95% Japanese people I’d say we’re on the money. Cant say enough about this place. Apparently Eater and the NYT can’t either. I just happen to be passing by, but will definitely stop back in to try some of their more unique flavors. Welcome to NYC Tom, we love ya! We look forward to returning!

We had a terrific dinner in this glamorous restaurant. We chose to sit in the dining room, rather than the long, bar type tables which are great for dining alone. They were packed with solo diners. We tried several appetizers and I particularly liked the eggplant. The Udon bowls are HUGE and there are various kinds. I tried the one with crabmeat and it was truly loaded with crabmeat. The noodles were delicious. The huge bowl is brought with a huge spoon. It would be better shared by 2. There's a decent variety of sushi as well as other dishes. The service is VERY brisk. Almost the moment something is finished, the plates are whisked away.

Tasty udon! Generous portions! Wide variety of choices.

By riclaw |

The noodles are fresh and exceleent. Service is prompt and the broth is very tasty. They offer regular or large prtions for the same price. The large portion includes more noodles.

Best Udon in USA

By andrewleej |

I've grown eating udon my entire life, and I've always enjoyed it as a nice comfort food staple during the cold winter months. I binge on ramen/udon here in Los Angeles, home of the best Japanese food in the USA...BUT this udon in NYC is unreal! I've never had flavor combinations like this in udon in my life, and it was spectacular. The decor and vibe of the place is awesome too, but man, the delicious udon in the giant bowls...I'll be back to NY just for that.

HUGE bowl of delicious udon noodles

A Long Island friend strongly recommended we visit here and she was so right. We had the tuna tartare appetizer and they were unique and delicious. The udon noodle bowl was amazing - we had the house special. It was gigantic - no way could I have eaten this alone so we shared it. Great service. Outstanding food and affordable.

POOR service and management

By imapieceofgummycandy |

If I can give a negative star, I would totally do it. I did not get a chance to sit down to try their food. but I had an awful experience with their services and arrangement. We were a group of 10 and we knew it can be difficult to get a table for our group. so we called and asked how long is the wait. they said it may take about 30 mins and max 45 mins. not too bad. so we went there and waited for 1.5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and still couldn't get a table) we talked to the waiter and all they kept telling us the other table is not ready yet and as soon as they leave, they can get us seated. the point is, why did u tell me it takes max 45 mins and end up making us wait for more than 1.5 hrs!!! why cannot manage the seats better? everyone around us and customers who even came in later than us already got their seats and we WERE STILL STANDING AND WAITING. ( we waited from 7:30-9 and all of us were really hungry) we even talked to the manager and they didn't seem to feel sorry about their poor management and arrangement, especially the tall girl with black curly hairs. This girl did not apologize AT ALL and gave us an attitude. Totally unacceptable !!!!

Love at first bite

I am in love with Tsurutontan. Everything about the restaurant is fabulous from the hostess with NY attitude ( but friendly) to the knowledgeable, patient servers to the delicious food. The lunch specials are incredible NY bargains.

The best ramen in New York

By jayroyan |

A friend introduced me to this restaurant and loved it. The setting is beautiful and very trendy in the decoration. The dishes were delicious, I still saliva nothing says thinking. My truffle ramen was the best ramen I have ever eaten. It's a bit expensive but it's normal when it's so delicate

Tasty, Generous, Efficient Staff

By HAYNES5 |

with a group of 11, the restaurant did a great job - be prepared to pay cash (as we were) as there is a 4 credit card limit to the check.. The noodles are fresh and excellent sauces/broth. Service is prompt and corrected quickly a few errors of the kitchen. They offer regular or large portions for the same price. The large portion includes more noodles. While I ordered the thick noodles, I tasted a dinner companions thin noodles and they held the sauce differently - both were tasty i preferred the thin noodle. Happy hour not much of a price savings if you don't drink beer, however if you have to wait (you will NOT be seated till your whole party is ready to sit) the drinks are tasty too

Udon in Unusual Restaurant "Country"

By People_Watcher2018 |

Udon in Unusual Restaurant “Country” Notice a quasi-darkish and noisy experience. Lighting is low; voices are high. Experience the interesting complex, heavy structure of the restaurant as it takes a longish path from the entrance to the rear. The path from the entrance is straight but it goes on for so long that it leaves the impression of winding, although it doesn’t, and closes suddenly with a curtain dressed in an unusual combination of subtle colors. The host led us to the far reaches of the restaurant country. Fellow customers included, at the table next to ours, a couple who after exchanging some words with each other turned to detached cell-phone calling as if no other person sat across.. One more table away a group of four, two couples, arrived and sat together but each couple mostly maintained conversation only with the person facing him or her. For a portion of time no one from either of the parallel pairs crossed the conversational line to the other pair. To complete our table neighborhood find placed in our exact position but on the other end of the rectangle a garrulous, seemingly upbeat and well-knit diverse ethnic family who shared food and facial gestures obviously familiar to each other. The mother, father, and two children neatly wove the time and space together for the entire meal. Space leaps up as an issue toward the lean final line of the restaurant where we noshed, (in Japanese のどかな) with each other. A person seated in the corner of the last table, myself as it were, needs to rise carefully and gently to avert hitting his or her noggin on the staircase directly above leading to additional eating space. “The food?” you ask. The bowls of noodles brought to the table eat up most of the space and have their own “ladder” aura, reaching high enough so that chopsticks or forks need an adept maneuverer to lunge after each noodle. This udon consumes an enormous proportion of each table’s scant space. It seems to stand taller than some of the customers and challenges each diner’s hands to use chopsticks or a fork to approach and reach it. Yes, success was achieved in catching the noodles but it required skill. The noodles seem to swim about in a deep pool of their own. Shortly before our departure the male member of the smart phone crew next to us adroitly used his phone to achieve one more goal. He seemed to use the phone’s light to help him read the menu. It works.

Bad customer experience

By FOUCAS |

Very bad customer and family expérience in the TsuruTontan E 16th. Very long waiting time, bad table and long time to be served. Especially we have our kid with us. And the food was below the expected standards from this restaurant. Last time I will eat there. Bad customer experience.

Beautiful restaurant.

By Jarb46 |

This restaurant occupies the former Union Square Cafe site. The have redone the entire space and it is spectacularly beautiful. The service was very good and we were served very quickly. The updon was served in huge bowls, the steamed dumplings were among the best I have ever had. In summary, good food and good service in spectacular setting. Highly recommended.

Solid Udon in Comfortable Setting

By Emily K |

I enjoy coming here when I am meeting friends and want to guarantee a space to eat as they take reservations. The space is also quite spacious and clean and perfect for larger parties if you make a reservation. They have plenty of options of udon for every person, hot and cold udon and specials throughout the year. The prices are pricey for udon but the quality is top notch. One special thing I like about this place is that you can get extra udon, labeled as regular or large, when you order for no extra cost. If you're looking for a good asian spot in Union Square, I'd recommend to give this place a try.

Best udon place in ny

By joyhuang2016 |

Never dissapoint us. We always visit this restaurant during our visit to new york. This place gives us the comfort that we seek. The wagyu udon is our favorite.

Love Ramen

By Eva S |

This place is a good choice for eating ramen. Both soups that we ordered were very delicious! I would highly recommend it. They have a happy hour for lunch with discounted main courses. The Wagyu spicy noodle soup and the cream of salmon were both top-notch. Unfortunately we discovered it during our last day while hurrying to the airport.

Great udon noodles and broth!

By CYC |

Fantastic broth and udon noodles. Very nice sushi too. Big portions. Great service. 10/10 would recommend. Book in advance (can do it on the same day via app), it gets busy!

Maria is a STAR!!!

By EllenGO |

Was interested in the special as I walked by, SO happy I stopped in! They gave me a space with room for my things, and Maria was AMAZING! She gave me great guidance on food, found a way for me to add a little salad that I really wanted, and provided advice on eating udon. She was absolutely lovely- do request her if you’re in on Tuesdays! The veggie tempura was yummy and the udon was, as well. And reasonably priced, to boot!

Over hyped....overrated...

By NV_KYL |

Hyped up and failed to deliver as the food advertised as japanese, taste more like a fusion of asian cuisine. Spicy Tuna Tartare Cone - spicy tuna tasted spicy and fresh....cone concept was good but the last bite is the final impression and you then realized it was a fried wonton shell. They would be better off just wrapping it in seaweed. Tsrutontan Deluxe - the presentation is impressive with the use of the large bowl but its not a deep bowl and its not filled up so perception is you are getting a lot, but reality is its not much different than ordering two orders of udon from any other restaurants. taste wise....the positive is the beef ; disappointing is the fish broth had absolutely no flavor - the soup has to leave a lasting impression and this was very disappointing ; shrimp tempura should be placed on the top so that it doesn't get soggy with the soup ; egg drop is when you have egg drop soup - they should have went with the half egg that is the norm in Japan. overall, udon was dull compared to others in the city. Sizzling Sukiyaki Udon - better than the Tsurutontan Deluxe but how is this different than shanghai fried noodles ; the flavor is the same and the after taste, where you feel oily is the same. Overall, disappointing with the restaurant...its suppose to be japanese but too much asian influence....

Amazing noodles, authentic Japanese noodles, food

By Inger A |

The food is really the key contributor at this restaurant. It is really good! A nice mix of dishes all from Noodles (which they have different versions - cold, broth, fried, creamy), Tempura and sushi/sashimi. All together really good authentic dishes! The presentation of the food is really good too. You get your own trey with multiple small plats for each part of the dish. It ads to the experience! The waitstaff is educated and decently accommodating but the key seller is the food and presentation! I will be back!

The strong AC cooled my food too quickly

By Tardykat |

Came here with the family for lunch yesterday. It was after 2pm and a lot of people came in after us. I guess everyone is having a late lunch on Saturday. We sat in the area to the left with low ceilings the AC vent is very close to the tables. The strong cold air cooled our food too quickly. The extra noodle portion is free and you get a choice of thin or thick udon. My mom got Nabeyaki with shrimp tempura, I got the sukiyaki (the onsen egg adds a good richness) and my sister got the truffle creme with crab and mushroom. The soup is more sauce-like than soup-like. For dessert we tried the water cake. Really enjoyed the food. Just don't sit near an AC vent!!

LOVE!!

By MrsRussellTravel |

We were looking for a place for lunch & stumbled across this amazing noodle place, it doesn't look much from the outside but inside is lovely. Waiter was very friendly, explained the menu. They do the largest bowls of Ramen I have ever had, it was such an enjoyable experience, Cam out full, warm & very satisfied. I would go back in a heart beat if I lived in NYC.

By Wklstoywife |

Heard about this place from a television show and I am glad I went, please be advised though you can't order dinner at the bar. We went in and decided to eat at the bar. We got there during happy hour and I got a ginger daiquiri (8.00) and my husband got a glass of pinot noir (6.00). We also ordered the shishito peppers (7.00). They were good but I have had better, when we went to order some udon but were told we couldn't get that at the bar, so we closed out our ticket and moved to the actual dining area down the stairs. I ordered the truffle creme with snowcrab 22.00. It was absolutely delicious. My husband had the duck udon 18.00 and he loved his too. He also ordered a glass of wine 12.00. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, only the one minor inconvenience but it really didn't bother us that much. I sure would go here again.

Love the uni udon (hot)

By Tom H |

Heard its good, went there, and it's amazing. Will definitely go back to try other dishes. The hot uni udon I had was simply tasty, and you can order large for the same price, just more udon. The udon is amazing

Delicious Udon!

By Brian P |

Brought a friend here on a Saturday evening. It was busy but we had a resy and were seated right away. Our waiter also greeted us quickly, took our drink order, came back with the drinks, then took our dinner order. Our giant udon bowls came quickly and we took our time to savor every delicious mouthful. The veggies, meat, and broth were all superb!!! This is such a great place for delicious, comfort food! I HIGHLY recommend!

Their Uni Udon is very good!!

By Nobel |

I was fortunate to come here before 6pm one night and lucky me... no wait! Tsurutontan is an establishment that people are familiar with in Japan and they decided to open up their first shop in the USA by Union Square! This place is decently sized and I think there was a lot of hype in the first week as I heard there were crazy waits. There is good reason though, as I feel the food is great. The ambiance and feel of this place was delightful, coupled with the very nice and attentive servers here. She even was promoting how nice the menu looked (which yes, it did look very well done)! There were so many choices of appetizers and different types of udon (hot, cold, traditional, and unique styles), along with some rice bowls if you are actually not feeling udon (but you really SHOULD try the udon, as its KNOWN for it!). Anyways, after careful deliberation, I decided to go for what was apparently their most popular dish, the cold Uni Udon. When I ordered this, you have the option to get the "large" order, which to be honest, is still a very manageable size. Upon receiving my bowl, I have to say that this was one of the best bowls of udon I ever had in the United States. I felt there was just the right amount of sea urchin and flavor in it. What really won me over was a very simple ingredient, the sesame seeds, as it provided a nice mixture of taste. The udon noodles themselves were prepared very well with the right amount of texture. This definitely is illustrated by the fact that the udon is prepared in-house. Maybe I tried their best dish here?!? Who knows, I would have to come back here and try some other bowls of udon... but with how good the Uni Udon is... that will be hard to actually follow-through on that idea.

Great udon!

By Tunaidi |

I've been to Tsurutontan in Japan before, and the food at this new NYC location is just as good. Very happy that I'll have convenient access to awesome udon now. I believe there were 3 sizes in Japan, but only a small and large in NYC. No biggie, because both cost the same. The noodles are definitely fresh and the broth varieties are delicious, grouped by clear, curry/creamy, and cold. Big fan of the sukiyaki udon and the curry deluxe. The ingredients and toppings were prepared well. The apps were also delicious. Loved one of the specials -- wagyu beef with uni and truffle oil sushi. The decor at Tsurutontan is pretty sleek, with both tables, bars, and benches and plenty of space. Pretty sweet venue. Some logistical things still needs a bit of work. Came in as a party of two and put our names down to be seated. Saw another party of two come in after us wait less then we did and get seated before us. Saw one more party of two come and the front desk said they could be seated right away. We finally stepped and told the staff that we had been waiting 30 mins and our names were taken.

Great place but dont ask for a big plate of noodles!

By Eve_LaounC |

Great place, beatifully designed. If you want to taste delicious noodles this is the way to go. but, DONT ASK for a big dish of noodles haha, its way to big. But you can share it with someone. Also I would recommend the regular sized noodles instead of the really big/wide ones. They are too heav, the combination of the regular size noodles with the other ingredients and "soup" in your plate are going to work better.

So so

By BD1002 |

Went with friends for dinner. Service is rude and pushy. They reminded me twice that food cannot be taken to go. While I had no intention of taking food to go, I'm not sure why that is a policy and why they would mention it repeatedly and with such fervor. Food itself is nothing special and overpriced. Seating is oddly configured and uncomfortable. I wouldn't return.

A Fun Adventure in Dining

By jbgshrink |

How many restaurants do we go to (besides a place like Perkins Pancakes) where the menu is comprised completely of photographs of each dish ? Admit it - not many, maybe, not any. Well, it's fun to see photos of at least 25 hot udon noodle soups and additionally some that are cold. And there are other things on their menu as well. The waiter is only too happy to educate you if you need it. And then comes the big decision. We each ordered the Curry Soup Deluxe, which was at the top of the price range, being $24. The waiter did describe it as a "heavy" broth. It had in it 2 delicious shrimp tempura; a wonderful piece of fried pork; some beef; and of course their great home made udon noodles. We both enjoyed it a lot although it was too thick a broth for me. BUT, I look forward to returning and experimenting with another soup. What fun.

very good lunch

By icorem |

I was looking for a quick lunch near Union square and find this place. The menu has lot to choose from and the service is very quick. The portions are huge but can get a bit pricey. Everything we had was very good. Very much recommended.

Atmosphere and Service are both excellent. Highly recommended

By sudhirdnaik |

You are in THE NEW YORK, a place buzzing with options, to see, eat, experience. You have just finished admiring the Union Square farmers market and have plans to watch a great show but have an hour on your hand. What do you do to offer something exciting to your tongue and belly? Simple answer! walk a little and go to TsuruTonTan The wait may be long, but is a worthwhile wait.

No longer Reliable good food and service

By EY_GlobeTrekker |

This has become our regular goto since they opened. Mainly because it is fresh, yummy and Japanese done just right. Their tempura is not overly greasy and fried in fresh non-rancid oil. Their sushi is always fresh and some items arrive directly from Japan. I have entertained many people here and they really enjoyed the noodles which is their specialty. Noodle Soup in Curry, Miso, Soyu... you name it they have it and done with right about of bite/chewy. Not al dente as Italian pasta is expected because their thin and thick Udon are meant to be slightly over cooked but not soggy. Good balance. Great ambiance and good service. Always busy. But accommodating. The receptionist is exceptional (at least the main one) who is a hard worker and keeps the crowd moving as soon as a table is cleared up. —- Updated 2023 Sashimi no longer as fresh than pre-2020 as turnover is much less. Still excellent udons. Another reason for 3 star is wait staff attitude. Normally I tip 20-23% in NYC but with bad attitude from today’s waiter makes me NOT ENJOY my time eating there—part of the reason people go out for a meal.

Lots of options and great service

By Angela B |

Grabbed an early dinner before a play here with three friends. Loved the atmosphere upon arrival and the service was prompt. Food came out faster than we anticipated and was tasty. Ordered the Sizzling Sukiyaki w/beef and it was very tasty. I've been to the one in Hawaii as well which both were consistent in the quality of food.

Super

By bergfischer |

Nice restaurant with many rooms and nice design details. Sometimes a little noisy. Good and attentive service. We had just about all the excellent appetizers they offer that there was almost no space left for my favorite noodles with Uni.

Japanese appetizers

By Sabena S |

Most people go to Tsurutontan Udon Noodle Brasserie for their large selection of udon. I am more interested in the appetizers. Every time I go there I order the spicy tuna tartare cones. Yesterday I craved these cones and so had lunch there. Four cones are perched on a bed of uncooked rice. These are crispy and flaky. Puréed creamy avocado is inside the cone and the spicy tuna is on top with a few tiny pieces of green scallions for decoration. These may look minuscule but are quite filling. I also had the beef sukiyaki buns but found it plain and gamey. I sprinkled chilly powder to make it more flavorful but the plain meat flavor remained. On another occasion, I ate a mouthwatering creamy spicy shrimp tempura with a tangle of micro greens on a bed of spicy sesame sauce. The popular teriyaki fried chicken looked and tasted ordinary. This Japanese chain is housed in the former Union Square Café location on East 16th Street. The bar area and it’s decor is the same as when USC was there but otherwise the ambiance, clientele and oversized bowls of udon have changed it full circle.

Good vibe and efficient service

Food was above average. The restaurant was quite packed when we were there. Many younger folks were there. They offer many Japanese dishes. Their staff was very efficient.

Perfect for a lunch alone: fast service, great atmosphere, high quality food and a lot of choice ( loved the entrance beef sandwiches, so delicious ). Oh and also the music was great.

Spectacular udon with iffy service and cocktails

By theoperadiva |

yummmmmmmmmmmmy! We just went and I'm already plotting my return. One of the top 5 noodle experiences we've had, and after a summer in Japan and a visit to every noodle haven in NYC, I feel amply qualified in that declaration :) The sizzling sukiyaki thick udon is just heavenly. Super umaminess with a deep, deep soul. The texture of the udon was spectacular. Gosh that was a great bowl. Two issues that I feel I must report which were sufficiently problematic to warrant a star removal: cocktails were really meh. My lychee cocktail tasted like a bar of soap in my grandmother's bathroom. It was way too heavy on the rosewater. My husband's gin and ginger beer number was really blah. Our server was lovely but they took a TREMENDOUS liberty with the whole "enjoy the plates as they come out because we serve things as they are ready!" line. My husband and I shared my entire steaming hot, slow to eat bowl before someone came over and said - oh! I should check on the other dishes. My husband's came out promptly after (curry udon, very very good if you are a fan of the style - wish they would leave the tempura on the side so as not to get soggy in the kitchen before it makes it to the table) and my kids came out 10 minutes AFTER THAT. No, no, no. You do not bring the kids meal 30 minutes after the grownups have gotten theirs. That is seriously bad form, and I could tell this was not intentional. We also had to ask for forks, extra bowls etc. for our kids which, I get it, this place isn't intended for children, but kids exist so they should help parents out and encourage our visit by making that extra efforts. Ours were not the only little ones there, and it would be a benefit to the other patrons if you could time the kids dishes better, ask about forks and other components, maybe provide some version of minor kid entertainment like crayons and a placemat (we brought our own things, but given the 30 minute wait for them to get their food, we went through all we had while we were trying to eat our own meal - thus the reason most places bring the kids stuff out first - it makes it far easier for adults to enjoy their meal if the kids have already been served). I also wish they would simply consider a kids portion of anything on the menu. Our kids split a dish but the bowl was the size of a sink, making it really difficult for them to fight for space on the small table. My daughter spilled an entire bowl of warm broth in her lap because the bowl was perched on the edge of the table given the huge shared bowl. Again, I understand this place isn't intended for kids and that their restaurants in Japan likely don't make such accommodations, but why not make it easier for everyone? I promise you will earn the loyalty of locals if you do make them feel welcome to come with or without kids. That said, do not miss a trip to this ridiculously good udon place. Make a reservation, even for lunch. We booked that morning and were sat within 5 minutes. Walkins were waiting 30-40 minutes at 1:45 pm.

Amazing!

Best authentic udon in the city

By Khoi N |

Came here on a busy Saturday and this place was completely packed. Wait was over an hour so my group and I decided to get drinks else where prior to sitting down. We ordered the curry deluxe 24, beef udon, small order of uni and salmon roe, and also the spicy tuna rolls. Wow these bowls are massive and packed with so much broth and udon. The Japanese curry was mild and rich in flavor. You want to eat the katsu and tempura rather quickly as they do get soggy. The beef in the udon comes out a little rare and you'll want to dip it in the broth a lil longer for it to cook. The small sized uni and salmon roe was perfect with our dish. I was really please with the service here. We felt like we had 3 servers at all times. The restaurant has a cool dark ambient feel to it. Extra comfy leather chairs and plenty of sitting for large parties. I really enjoyed my experience here. Flavors were on point and the massive bowls blew me a way. Highly recommend this to anyone that loves udon and authentic Japanese cuisine.

How do you get a “1star” when you never even had a taste of their food

By Tammywine |

As soon as I walked in I got rudely greeted by a non Asian woman. Nothing like good afternoon or welcome. I got “we are closed”. She looked me up and down as I was trash. It was 11:50am. I asked to use the bathroom awhile I waited. She acted like I put her out. Will go into the bathroom underneath the dirtier is a hole in the wall from water damage and mold. Nice. I come out and the lady said to sit down. She already said I could not eat am entree at the bar. So I sat down in the smallest table. She Elle’s put at me and I said where would you like me to sit. There was no one In The restaurant. Then an Asian lady comes storming after me screaming with authority. She must be a big manager and saying the restaurant was not open. That was like in 4 minutes. She can not be Japanese. Because Japanese person would never react like that. I was actually in Japan 2 days ago. The kindest people ever. I said to her is the reaction worth the review. She told me she did not care about the review. I am so sure the owner would love her saying that to a customer. She would not have a job in my company. She would have been fired in a second. If the owner is Japanese. I am sure he is highly embarrassed.

Extra large bowls of udon to die for

By Randall Tan |

Atmosphere was great. They won't seat you until your entire party has arrived so make sure everyone is on time. Once you are seated, the choices that are presented before you will leave you spoilt for choice. Upgrades to extra large bowls of steaming udon is absolutely free and the size of the bowl is big enough to cover your face. Food was amazing and prices were reasonable. Great place to catch up with friends and enjoy good food. Drinks menu was fairly extensive and oh! They have Asahi and Sapporo on tap too!

All Day Happy Hour!

One of my very favourite restaurants in the world. I always try to go whenever I’m in New York. The truffle udon is incredible, I’d fly just for that. Everything I’ve had hear has been fantastic, the cocktails are also worth staying longer.

Hip Japanese Brasserie near Union Square

By Westcoastboy181 |

Had a late lunch after shopping in the area. Was surprised by the sublime wagyu udon with Dashi broth. Family had a chicken donburi and veggie tempura udon, and although the donburi was passable, stick to the noodle dishes. The bar area has a downtown vibe and the seating area a contemporary feel. Nice place for lunch!

DELICIOUS!!!

Was INCREDIBLE!!! I brought my sister and our niece. We all ordered different udon bowls and all devoured every last drop of broth. Food came super quickly and was amazing and the specialty drinks were delicious. Service was quick, friendly, & professional. I HIGHLY recommend!

quick stop between shows

By scbeaches |

we popped in between shows and the service was quick and attentive. HH is after 8:30p or 8p depending on the day. we had avo salmon roll, tofu edamame salad and avo salad. they don't allow you to buy a bowl of miso soup unless you're ordering certain (pricey) entrees.

Tasty/flavorful udon broth, highly recommend it

By Mystiqz |

We came here with a group of 4 people. We came right when the store opened and there was a small line before they were open for business. I had the US Wagyu Shabu Curry with thick udon. Tried the Tsuruton Salad. Contains Mentaiko caviar dressing and crispy udon. Also had Uni & Caviar, Truffle Creme with mushrooms, Uni Udon (cold noodle dish) and Tsurutontan Deluxe. Out of all the dishes, I preferred the Tsurutontan deluxe the best. It felt to have the best balance between noodle and soup. Their broth reminded me of one of the broths I tried in Japan at the Udon Museum. It was a great educational experience and this place does udon justice. The tempura was light and crisp. Shrimp wasn't over cooked. The other dishes were very sauce/soup heavy and it felt to be too much. There is no extra charge if you order the large portion of the noodles. I thought it was a strange concept but it works. The bowls they serve the meal in is HUGE!! I asked one of the staff members where they got their bowls from and he said they got them imported from Japan. The staff was extremely helpful and always checking in to see if everything is okay with the meal. From the salad, I liked the crispy udon. Overall the dish was good but I preferred others. I have never tried a cold udon noodle dish and I wasn't that impressed with it. The uni was alright, not sweet enough but there were no sand in it. The truffle creme was too heavy on the cream sauce and flavors weren't balanced. Overall, I would recommend this place and would definitely come back here again.

Great udon!

By Splendid C |

Unlike typical udon joints, this one was pleasantly decorated. The chicken udon soup was amazing: thin udon perfectly cooked, large wooden bowl and the soup was not oily or over salty. Good prices.

Set in a chic, trendy space, this place will wow you with the choices of ramen and stir fry's. We had the mega ramen bowls with the "big" udon noodles. They were delicious. Up size to a large bowl for the same price. The service was spot on and very attentive. Would return again for another lunch or dinner.

By marabel100 |

The food is ok. The service is totally overly solicitous and obsequious. It ruined my meal. They came over to our table every three minutes to ask if we were done even though my colleague and I were engrossed in a very intense and long conversation. We asked if they would stop, but they didn’t. I won’t go back. The interior is very cool though, especially the wall coverings. They’re fantastic.

Udon and more

By mof1 |

Japanese casual in NYC with an Udon twist. As their name suggests, come here for the Udon. They have a variety of that which means you get to pick what they put in your Udon noodles and broth. Just plain is also fine, but we had katsu curry and wagyu beef as well. The wagyu flavor was kind of lost so I might not recommend that, not cause it was bad, but it is not the way to eat wagyu. The side of sushi that you get with the plate is a good deal for the price. Some of the other reviews are strange. It is very hard to get vegetarian in Japan, unless you go a a vegetarian restaurant. Most broth has meat or seafood in it. So do not expect that here.
