Excellent cozy restaurant for a nice quiet dinner

By Carla B |

I went with a party of 6 friends and we literally ordered all of the appetizers (but the egg) and loved all of them.. I have a special obsession with brussel sprouts and although my heart has been stolen already the ones in Tuome are definitely my second favorite ones. I had the meat as main course which was delicious. Among everyone else the Snow crab was a favorite and the red snapper too. I only gave it 4 stars because it took a little too much from the appetizers until the main courses were brought to the table (definitely more than the 30 minutes we were told, specially considering we ordered the main courses before we got the appetizers). I think it's a fair price for the food.. it's really delicious.. the 6 of us loved everything and the waiter was really nice and great explaining the food and recommending. I would definitely come back and eat the rest of the menu

Fantastic flavors!

Our friends had heard great things about this restaurant and we made a reservation for dinner here on our last night in New York. I ordered a “Blushing Dragon Sangria” which was a great start. For appetizers, we tried fried chicken and deviled eggs, and I can’t describe how delicious these familiar foods tasted. My husband had the beef dinner with a side of mashed potatoes, my friend had two appetizers — beet and mushroom — for her dinner, and I split a “pig out” with my friend’s husband. We all loved what we ordered! The server was friendly and knowledgeable, and really enjoyed answering our questions. We would like to return the next time we’re in New York and save room for dessert!

A great new restaurant

By Lindsey S |

I had read positive about Tuome since they opened not too long ago and made it a point to stop by for their famous "pig out for two" for dinner with a friend of mine. My friend and I had an early reservation (6pm) and were one of the first people in the restaurant which is quaint yet nicely appointed across two rooms. The entrance room has 2 window seats (we were in one - and yes it was a bit chillier there) and a small bar area while the adjoining room has only small tables. Our server was very warm and friendly and happy to be part of the Tuome team - apparently this was her first waiting tables gig and she shined at it. We ordered a bottle of wine to share - a rieseling - and decided to share a few things on the menu. After asking our server's opinion on which was better, we were a bit hard pressed to come up with our final choice (there were just too many things we wanted to try) but we decided on: the "hot small" mushroom app, the brussels sprout side and the pig out for two main entree. That was more than plenty of food for two people to share, and honestly, we could have been more than full if we skipped the brussel sprouts. Highlights: the mushroom hot appetizer was actually my favorite dish of the night. A variety of wild mushrooms served with a sixty minute egg (think a slow cooked perfectly poached egg). It was rich and delicious. I would go back purely to have this again. The peanut noodles which accompanied the pork belly in the entree my friend claimed to be some of the best she has ever eaten (she is far more a noodle aficionado than I am) and I can attest to their soft and stickiness, I don't have much to compare them to. Mediumlights: I appreciated the pig out for two's presentation - with the 10 peices of crispy pork belly lined up alongside a small salad and two sauce toppers - the pork was only okay. Unlike noodles, I have eaten my fare share of pork belly and I think what threw me most was the temperature of this. It was only luke warm, if that, on the plate and I felt as though the meat suffered a bit drying out as we ate it. Perhaps the drier, more crunchy texture is the restaurant's goal, and if so, then it just means it isn't a home run for my taste buds. The brussel sprouts were good and I enjoyed the addition of grapes to that dish - similar in shape yet completely different in texture and taste it gave the dish that extra mouth feel which I enjoyed. The XO sauce was understated, which I wished it not to be thus me putting it in the mediumlights section. Lowlights: The sauces with the pork belly I just did not understand. I actually felt like the dish stood better on its own with those sauces saved for a different dish or not used at all. Also, the draftiness of the seat in the window is a real thing and I did eat there in the middle of winter so I could have kept my coat on and been more (or less) comfortable. Would I return? Yes. Especially for those delectable mushrooms. I also am eager to try their version of deviled eggs (done backward) and the octopus appetizer. Our service was impeccable, the space is lovely and the menu is inventive enough. Congrats to Tuome on a job well done!

well...a totally unexpected treat....a GREAT meal with unusual twists

By Louise B |

To dinner with youngest son on first night in NYC - could not have been a better choice. really lovely venue, very helpful staff, extraordinary food. I don't know quite how to describe it except that we kept getting plates of food that we didn't expect and with twists that were a delightful surprise to the taste buds. the asparagus something was outrageous and wonderful. the recommended devilled eggs were awesome - just incredible. i had I think lamb - all i can remember was it was sublime. and some very yummy rice we finished off with the Asian beignette - totally fantastic. highly recommend this for an excellent different meal.

Do you hunger for modern Chinese?

By Phayao13 |

My taste buds were surprised, not quite to their liking.Started with some hot small / oxtail, spring roll, bone marrow, and cumin..sorry to say you really need to favor cumin to appreciate this dish. Followed by Octopus, pork xo, brown butter...everywhere this days..and fingerling potato from a suprisingly serving. Chinese broccoli, roasted sesame and garlic sauce, so so..The newly opened Tuome has rustic decor, the place gets packed in no time. I guess I come back for some large plates in the future

Good spot for a date

By Karl B |

Had a nice dinner at Tuome. Cozy location and definitely very generous serving sizes (counter to what you may expect at a restaurant like this). Enjoyed the “pig out” and the rice side was fantastic! All of this said the food was not jaw droppingly amazing. But it was certainly very good.

Total disappointment - So many better options out there!

By theoperadiva |

Meh, I've experienced better is right. From the dishwater sangria with .0001% alcohol content to the peanut butter noodles my 4 year old could have made, this was one disappointing meal. Nothing was remotely unique, everything was done 10 years ago someplace else and far better...it all lacks pizzazz of any kind. This is one soulless place where the menu descriptions far exceed the actual delivery. What an utter disappointment. Definitely head someplace else if you are looking for a meal that inspires...this place isn't it.

A very limited menu at astronomical prices in a small space ~ decent food but not worth the ridiculous price-tag !!

By Alok Jolly |

Located on East 5th Street between Avenues A & B in the East Village / Alphabet City district of downtown, NYC, Tuome is a relative newcomer to the NYC food scene… but with very impressive and weighty credentials. Billed as a “contemporary American restaurant with Asian influences” it meets that label pretty damn well. In a stylishly decorated, large space, with exposed brick walls interspersed with decorative panels, plaster & ceramic wall tile, mirrors, empty frames masquerading as artwork, potted flowers, bare wood floors and tables, funky lighting, etc… this space is at the same time exciting and functionally done. The noise level is a bit high, though, because of this. The menu is also a bit sparse… and while the prices are above average, the portions are ridiculously small ~ way below average. We had 2 glasses of rose wine ($28) and a plate of chicken liver ($14) to start, and then asked for the wagyu beef ($38) and snow crab pasta ($33) as our mains. Initially, we were planning to order another salad and share the snow crab, and asked the waiter if this was a large enough serving for us to share, and he assured us it was ~ stating that it had “a full crab shredded over the pasta.” Sounded great, but well, look at my photos. We could barely see the crab, and definitely didn’t see the squash.. it must have been juiced ! The beef I ordered instead of sharing the pasta was also a pathetically tiny serving (photos …again !!) It was gone even before I could decide if it was good.. another reason to stay away from these “small plates” rip-off wonders. Won’t be back, thank you. If you think your food is so great, please provide enough for someone to get to taste it before its gone, instead of just thinking of your profit line !!

Delicious!!

By ctny |

I have had dinner here twice now and both times Tuome delivered in spades -- excellent, highly creative food that is simultaneously comforting and deeply delicious. They have a small but well edited menu and wine list but everything is yummy. Make sure you order the sides; they're all good, especially the rice with Chinese sausage and kale. Tuome has been described as Chinese fusion and anytime I hear the word fusion, I lose total interest, and here, it's not really accurate. The chef here uses Chinese ingredients in a style of cooking that is entirely his own and every bite is good. The service is nice and friendly too!

Fun Experience!

Pre-ordered the summer picnic fried chicken basket and it was more than enough for two people! We also order an appetizer which could have easily done without. Great atmosphere...attentive service (but not over the top).

Customer Service Done Right!

By TomWolfeUSNA72 |

My daughter and son-in-law celebrated their second wedding anniversary recently with a dinner at Tuome. I had secretly arranged with the restaurant to present to them a bottle of wine from my wife and me. We spoke with our daughter the day after the dinner and she raved about the food, the setting, the service--pretty much everything. But, she did not mention the wine. Hmmmm . . . . When I followed up with the restaurant, the manager, Brandon, did an immediate mea culpa and apologized profusely, There had been a communications glitch among the restaurant staff and my wine surprise had dropped through a crack. So, you may be wondering why my daughter, son-in-law, and I give Tuome FIVE STARS? That's easy--excellent customer service by Brandon. Not only did he accept responsibility, but he also went out of his way with a very thoughtful and generous gesture to make up for it. My daughter and son-in-law will definitely go back to Tuome, recommend it to their friends, and maybe even take my wife and I there on our next visit to Manhattan!

Delicious food, but slightly spotty service

By vs449 |

Went there for Restaurant Week dinner, and was seated at the bar. The food itself was delicious. Highlights included the beet salad, the shrimp appetizer and the snowcrab noodles. The service was slightly spotty - the wait staff was very pleasant. However, the entrees took a while and didn't arrive at the same time (there were only two of us in our group). Overall, a solid meal.

One of the best in NYC

By BobB53 |

New restaurant with established chef producing truly excellent and innovative food. Situated a bit off the beaten track, we were taken here by some American friends. Cosy restaurant, excellent service and delicious food and wine made for a wonderful evening. Beware though - it's not cheap but you do get what you pay for.

Pig Out!

By Mymilesandsmiles |

Tuome is a Contemporary American cooking with Asian influence located in a cozy little space on 5th Street near Avenue B. Came here on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was busy, VERY busy! We had 8:30pm reservation for the bar and yet were not seated till a little past 9pm. The service is solid and friendly, which helps, and the crowd here was slightly older than average for the East Village. It does look like a popular date spot The star of the show here is the “Pig Out” (for two), which consists of little squares of crispy pork belly with sides of peanut noodles. The Pork belly squares are delicious but I honestly didn’t care for the peanut noodle, it was overly sweet for my taste almost like straight out peanut butter. Don’t miss the snow crab, it was really yummy! We ordered almost the whole menu LOL!! Definitely a #pigout night Appetizer – SHRIMP TOAST - wasabi aioli, watercress, chives CHICKEN LIVER - mousse, maple, milk bread. I’ve been thinking and telling friends about this dish since we tried it. Chicken liver mousse on a toast with the sweet maple syrup, sea salt, and pumpkin seeds, it’s just awesome. A must! Main – PIG OUT (FOR TWO) - berkshire pork, spicy peanut noodle, condiments. For $49, you get 10 blocks of crispy pork belly, and two bowls of al dente peanut noodles. That’s a lot. A pretty rich choice for date night, but come with a few friends and get one for the table. SNOW CRAB - noodle, squash, dashi butter Dessert - BERRY - coconut pudding, berries, almond BEIGNET - goat's milk caramel, ice cream, citro

A Slight Let Down. Here’s what to expect at the Tuome

By MrGaucho1987 |

The main room is small. It feels a bit cramped. But it is well decorated and otherwise comfortable. It will get a little loud, so bear that in mind if considering for a more intimate date. Our table’s reaction to the food was mixed. We all enjoyed the appetizers but the two entrees (pork and lobster) disappointed some in my party. “All Too sweet” was a frequent refrain. We gave the chef big points for unique flavors... no bland fare here at all. But the retired chef in our group wondered if the kitchen was too clever for its own good (e.g. their take on beignets was a disappointment.). Service was totally professional. Our waitperson appeared to be working almost the whole room and did so with ease. Overall, Tuome offer creative fare in a comfortable/sophisticated environment but it might not please everyone in your party. We would not return.

Unexpected Gem

By Melissa F |

Dined here with a friend for dinner during NYC Restaurant Week in August 2017. I am inclined to think that restaurants participating in this event give a good indication of their normal atmosphere, service, and food. If so, Tuome gave a very good impression. The service was warm and friendly, without being overwhelming. We chose the heirloom-watermelon salad and chicken liver for apps, pork for two as the main and the beignets for dessert. I tend to be hesitant when ordering a tomato salad off a menu because it usually lacks creativity, but this one was really a nice surprise. The farro, the watermelon (so sweet and juicy!) made for such nice combination and the presentation was lovely. My friend had the chicken liver and she really enjoyed it - it looked so beautifully whipped and creamy. The pork for two was SO good. 10 cubes of 15-hour confit pork belly paired with spicy peanut noodles - mouth-watering. The portion was so generous, that I was able to take some home. (I love pork belly, but 5 cubes was filling!) We finished with the beignets with vanilla ice cream and goat milk caramel. The beignets themselves were perfect - flaky, crispy exterior, soft and chewy on the inside - that with the ice cream and caramel made a perfect little ice cream sandwich - I could have eaten much more than two. The place itself is very cool - very LES (Lower East Side). Exposed brick walls, which I am always a fan of, well-placed tables, and a cute bar made for a welcoming ambiance amidst a rainy evening. The service was also very good, the server explained the dishes in a comprehensive way, the host/manager(?) greeted us warmly upon entering and checked on us during the meal. Despite it being located in the LES, I would absolutely make the trip to return here. It's one of those place I would love to remain an 'undiscovered gem,' but could really see it taking off, and soon.

Delicious n' yet full of surprises !

By KyleWV |

Persimmon with Burrata ! Beef tartare with green chips ! Chicken liver taste like duck fois gras ! Pig out the yummy pork belly with spicy noodle and peanut sauce ! Crispy chicken with mushroom risotto ! Duck breast tender as filet mignon ! One of the best meals I have had for a while !!! Plus friendly, nice service... I wish 6 stars were an option here.

Cozy East Village Charmer

By REMReviews |

Warm and welcoming, sleek but comfortable, hip but friendly and engaging, And you can have a conversation with your dinner companion without shouting, which is a rarity among NYC restaurants these days. Oh, and the wait staff is accommodating and attentive and not in a rush. And the food is really really good -- chicken liver mousse appetizer and grilled octopus were standouts.

Average

By Max D |

I got quail appetizer and while cooked very well, somewhat medium rare, there was too much sauce and it’s sweet which I don’t care much. For entree, I got snow crab pasta which had cheese and too much butter in sauce. Butter usually solves everything so it’s a bit of cheat here and not really memorable for me. There was only one dessert which were ice cream sandwiches which was just eh for me. Seating at the bar was very tight because there were tables directly in back of the bar seats. It was also missing a much needed foot rest so very uncomfortable at the bar but table seating is very limited due to small place so reservations are recommended.

Very good Asian/American food

By robcurtross |

We attended New York magazine's New York Taste late last year. Tuome offered a delicious snow crab and noodle dish. The crab was wonderfully fresh and the blend of noodles, crab and spices was remarkably complex. To my taste, crab usually dominates or is lost in a dish; somehow this one balanced everything beautifully and the mouth feel was very interesting. My experience was so positive that my companion and I tried the restaurant for a very delightful dinner. The food, service and decor were all splendid. I tried the crab dish, and it was just as good in the restaurant as it was at the tasting.

Excellent Experience

Outstanding food, with excellent service. Menu was full of unique items. Snow crab with noodles, grilled squid both fantastic. Highly recommend this spot if you are in NY.

Fan-bloodytastic meal

By Milehighclub |

To describe Tuome as intimate is a huge understatement, the space is small and can be a tad claustrophobic. But I would take that risk, just to eat there again, and again. The menu is small, but a very considered selection. I would highly recommend you sample EVERYTHING, otherwise book your next visit the next day to sample more dishes. The dishes are small, but if you order a 3 course meal, it's surprisingly just the right amount. Please do sample : The Devilled Eggs, who knew you could fry them? Octopus, duck and order the side of rice. Finish off with the Asian style beignet! Trust me you won't regret it.

Casual spot that lives up to the hype.

By Heather086 |

I actually put off trying this restaurant as it is very popular and I was concerned that it was just another trendy spot that is more hip than quality. I also had it in my head that it was an Asian-American fusion restaurant. Neither preconception was true. This is a small, cozy place, cheerful somehow while dimly lit. Our service was excellent - helpful, prompt, professional and friendly. It might have been a bit quick if we'd been looking for a drawn-out meal, but we weren't - just a catch-up dinner between friends. The wine list is small and well done, with good quality, reasonably-priced selections. The food was excellent all around. We had deviled eggs (fried, which I was not expecting, and which was a creative and delicious touch) and the octopus (excellent), and the pig out, which was by far the best pork belly I've had. It's is the perfect size for 2 to split. After this we were stuffed, so we didn't try dessert, but I expect it was excellent. My only complaint was that the A/C seemed insufficient, as the restaurant was pretty toasty by the time it filled up.

Intriguing food in cramped quarters

By Richard J |

Tuome is a fun little restaurant a little out of the way in East Village with fantastic, inspired food. We started with the octopus, which was braised in sake for 10 hours and served with XO sauce. It was divine. Our main course was their famous "pig out", which is crispy pork belly for two. It was very crispy and tasty, with all almost all the fat melted away in the crisping process. However, I wish we could have gotten a single portion or had more people to split it with so that we could have ordered more variety. We did get a side of the Kabocha squash, which was a smooth puree bursting with flavor. The menu is very small, and some picky eaters might not find something they want. The wine list is nowhere near the level of the food, but luckily they had a good Chateauneuf-du-Pape of all things on their wines by the glass. Service was attentive but intrusive, party due to how close the table were. Still, I would go back anytime for great food at a reasonable price.

Extremely impressed

By Travelaround59 |

We did have a great meal at Tuome! We were 5 and all our choices were good and interesting and creative. We have been warned that our choices could come at different time as the kitchen isn’t very big and encouraged to share...we didn’t but we didn’t need to wait much! The place is rather small but attractive and there were loads of people waiting to be seated also after 10pm when we left. Service was incredible smooth and attentive (out glasses were never left empty) and all in all a really wonderful meal with great flavours. I will go back anytime.

Superb choices in a simple pleasant place

By Peter H |

Go to the lower East side for special flavors served by a very pleasant staff. The octopus and egg were delicious, their singular "pig out" wonderful but be aware that the food is rich. Our party of 8 ordered too much. The wines are very good but pricey. Well worth a visit more than once to taste the food variety without "pigging out".

I'm a foodie and this place will stay at the top of my list

By Carly G |

I picked this spot for a double date with out of town guests who are big foodies. It was a little quiet when we first got there (8pm reservation on a Wednesday in late August) but the place filled up very quickly. The atmosphere was comfortable and trendy with exposed brick and an attractive brass accented bar. The wine selection was spot on and I had a delicious Rose and my fellow diners ordered a beer and red wine. It's a great place to share food and order family style. While the menu is slim, it is perfectly curated. We probably ordered everything on the menu. For entrees I loved the Pig Out for two and we also ordered the chicken and skate. The Corn massaman curry side was one of my favorites. Also the scotch egg was great - was fried and crispy. The service was very attentive - they didn't miss a beat. Water glasses were always full, food came out on time. To note: They don't serve hard alcohol - just liquors, wine and beer.

Awful Host

By Tolga A |

I write this review to express my absolute disappointment towards the behavior of the host of this beautiful restaurant. The restaurant is quite small, there is nothing wrong with that but you tend to notice almost everything that is happening around you. The host was openly disciplining his employee as if his intention was to perform it for us, as he did it RIGHT by our table. We were sat at a table for 4 by the entrance, we weren't offered a seating preference, however while the restaurant was very empty at 6pm we requested to be moved into the side room in order to avoid the constant cold air rushing in each time this very popular place was visited by a new patron. We saw our waiter ask the host and he immediately told him NO... as if a child had asked the "cool friends" to play but was refused. Then our waiter, who was very professional about it, smiled and apologized for our request being denied. This experience just made everything awful. We decided to order every single starter, our own main and explore their red wine list by the glass. The restaurant's food and our waiters exceptional service (he knew his wines like if they were his own children) were able to redeem itself for the faults of the absolute clown who hosted that evening.

Good, but unremarkable.

By Stanislaus St. Marks |

The menu descriptions were both creative and intriguing, but the anticipated experience of a "wow" dinner never materialized. Price points were correct for the East Village except that the served dinner portions were luncheon portions. Service was quick, so doesn't lend itself to long conversations over dinner.

Overcharged

By Paul H |

Our dinner (for myself and my daughter) was fine, server whatever, but somehow the restaurant added over $250 to the tip. Left messages, spoke to the manager three times who told me that the processing company would correct the error, but nothing happened for over two months, despite reassurances. My wife finally called today to let the restaurant know that we would dispute the charge, at which point the manager credited back our card. TBH, I didn’t want to write this review, but I just wonder why he didn’t reimburse me to begin with, and also how often this restaurant “accidentally” adds a zero to the tip. The difficulty of getting refunded makes me wonder if they are acting in good faith.

Textures, flavours ... Fabulous

By Alf B |

Tuome provides some extraordinary dishes. The pork dish for two is 10 formed nuggets or pork with fresh and hot spices. The four of us share about 10 dishes; smal, big and sides. Everyone different in presentation, layers of flavours and textures. Service and house drinks were great too. Head to the east village.

Great Alphabet City address!

By Camille K |

Loved having dinner there, food is delicious and surprising. I highly recommend the beignet for dessert, couldn’t get enough! Small unfortunate event with our check: we were undercharged by mistake and then chased down the street when they realized their mistake, which wasn’t super customer-friendly

First time and will definitely be one of our favorites in NYC

By World traveler |

We picked this restaurant as it has one Michelin star and we have been to many Michelin starred restaurant in the city. First of all the restaurant has a nice vibe with the feel of a cute bistro. The crowd was actually young that night. The service was efficient, prompt and friendly. The menu had a good variety of dishes mostly with an Asian twist. We tried many of the appetizers and they were all delicious. I strongly recommend their specialty the pig out which is basically pork belly square. It was succulent. The wine list was surprisingly affordable. I have been to many Michelin starred restaurant in NYC and this is one of the best. We usually avoid going back to the same restaurant in NYC given the long list of restaurants we would like to try but we enjoyed our dinner so much that we will be back!

Amazing

By tap6699 |

Best meal we have had for a long time. It was restaurant week so we ordered off that menu but the full price for what we had would have only been a few dollars more and we would happily pay that to eat here again. We started with the chicken liver mousse with the maple syrup and also the citrus infused watermelon which were both fantastic. We shared a pig out for our mains, the pig was delicious with crispy crunchy skin, tender meat and great sauces, the warm peanut noodles that came with the pig were amazing. The desserts were pretty good too, the beignets probably shaded it over the chocolate and strawberry. The restaurant itself is cosy and the staff were very attentive and we even got to meet the owner/chef who was a really nice guy. We would definitely go back when we are next in New York, this place together with Joe's Shanghai will now go on my list of must go to places whenever we visit.

Lovely anniversary meal

By David S |

We had dinner here for our wedding anniversary and were pleased with our choice. We were running late due to significantly underestimating the travel time but the restaurant were very understanding and offered us alternative seating at the bar so we didn’t need to rush our meal and could benefit from the air conditioning! Food was really good, we both really enjoyed all three courses - a special mention for the goats milk caramel in the dessert, we’d have happily just drank that! I can also honestly say it’s the first time I’ve ever said “wow” after having a mouthful of broccoli.

Fantastic Dinner

By LnS2004 |

The dinner we had here last Saturday night was the best meal during our first 4-day foodie trip to NYC in 16 months. Our outdoor seating was airy and comfortable. The food was meticulously prepared, beautifully plated, and amazingly tasty. The attentive wait staff provided excellent service. Starting with the eye-pleasing Fire in the Sky cocktail, and playful complementary snacks, we were enthralled. The yummy snap pea scallop was the standout of the three appetizers (flute and octopus were the others). Each of the mains: pig out, halibut curry and snow crab noodle was irresistibly scrumptious. All three sides: green beans, broccoli, and lotus leaf wrapped glutinous rice with lapchong were also superb. My intrigue with the award winning restaurant’s name led me to learn of the chef’s immigrant roots, culinary pedigree and personal triumph, which made this dinner even more meaningful.

TUOME a 1 Star Michelin Restaurant in East Village NY

By LUIGI M |

I went to TUOME with my wife and Child for celebrate the birthday of my oldest daughter I was very impressive with the menú and quality of the food, without be an extremely expensive restaurant because carry a Michelin Star it was excellent in all ways

AMAZING!!

By MonicaFaour |

This place is amazing, the food is just great! creative and a lot a lot of flavor!... I didn't even know about this place on my visit to NY, my bf and I were looking for a place to eat walking down the street and we spotted this place, it took our eye and decided to try it on, it was in our last day in NY, and definitely we saved the best for last it was our best meal in NY, and we went to a lot of places! Try the Pig out: pork, spicy penut noodle, a salad with cashew, peaches and some greens, and the rice! my god the rice! try the rice, it has a lot of flavor!

extraordinary

By GregMasters |

Food here was stellar, as was service. We went for the pork dish for two that's served with noodles. Being composed of pork belly, the amount of food proved a bit rich for my taste but that's not to discount how delicious it was. Broccoli side was outstanding.

Great New Years Eve dinner

By jar_rodrigues |

A very good combination of dishes. Very difficult to named the best. The last dinner in 2018 could not be best. Many thanks to the Chef and the team.

You could miss it. But you shouldn't.

By Buy Yourself Memories |

Definitely not the most obvious find in the city but the atmosphere once in is one of a kind, the food was finely crafted and the staff was very knowledgable about all the dishes we ordered. Cherry on the cake, the octopus (pork xo, brown butter, fingerling potato) was the best I had.

Tiny place with great food

By Zvante |

We had a great dinner their couple of days ago. Do not miss the pork belly for two, super delicious and nice friendly service.

Very good but worthy of Michelin Star?

By Trophy Food Experiences |

I had dinner at this restaurant and firstly want to make it clear I think this is a wonderful restaurant. But I can only compare it to the experience I had at Vestry 2 nights before and my preference was for that restaurant in many areas. We had a reservation for 7 pm and tried to go to the restaurant for drinks with another group of friends. It restaurant did not have room for us as they were fully booked. That was not the issue...it was how the host/manager told us....it kind of felt like "we are full booked, there is no way we would have room to accommodate you earlier". Even when we got to the restaurant, the management style was much more business like rather than welcoming at Vestry. Our server Sarah was really friendly and attentive so no complaints there. I would say their wine list is not as extensive as Vestry's and not as many interesting by the glass options (but that could be just personal preference) The menu is also smaller than Vestry but everything I thought was spectacular but just a tad not as refined as compared to Vestry. For the appetizers, we tried the Egg, Chicken Liver, Morel and Quail. My favourites were the chicken liver and morel which are both beautifully presented, fun and delicious. For the mains, we had the Wagyu Beef and Snow Crab. Both were well made but didn't knock it out of the park. In general, the vibe of the restaurant did not seem as casual and welcoming as Vestry. That may have played a bit of a role in my perception of the food but I thought the food was good, there were some real winners but not enough that I would think this is a 1 star Michelin restaurant. I would still think it is good restaurant to go to and perhaps others will get a different vibe than I felt. See my full review on my Youtube channel

Fine but Not Wonderful

By jbrown68 |

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I found the food here just fine, but not worth much fuss. We started with the deviled eggs, which were a little overwhelmed by the fried aspect. The fluke was fabulous. Really tasty. I had the snow crab, which was good, but the snow crab was difficult to find. It was mostly pasta. The service was quite slow. Took a long time for anyone to take our order. This place definitely wasn't bad, but but I wouldn't run back here.

Good Fusion Food

By IamZozo |

Nice food Spiced popcorn as amused de buche. Good fluke crudo and an excellent duck. The 3 course menu at 45 dollar is one of the best value deals i town.

This will put you in a food coma and keep you dreaming of the next time you can return

Tonight’s visit to Tuome was nothing short of exceptional. We live in the neighborhood and had often thought of visiting this restaurant but were often confused by the Michelin star which was overshadowed by the opinions of other self critics here on trip advisor which said it was way overpriced and overrated. Tonight, despite the reviews, we decided to check it out for ourselves. I must repeat emphatically that is was nothing less than exceptional! We started the evening with a beautiful little potato and ricotta dish that was sent out as a gift from the chef. It was light and lovely but that was only the beginning. We ordered some very nice cocktails. I ordered he dragon sangria and it was a nice way to start off the evening. We ordered the octopus, the deviled eggs and the chicken liver mousse and although all of them were superb we thought the foam brown butter sauce on the octopus deserved special mention. It was so rich and had a such a great mouth feel , but it also had a wonderful taste, which is often absent in a foam sauce. As for the entrees, we shared the pig out which was a crispy pork belly with 3 different sauces on the plate, and a side portion of peanut noodles and although the pork was delicious the real standout was the garnish of arugula salad with lycees and candied walnuts. We also tried the halibut with a gorgeous light curry cream sauce that was superb as well. Everyone at the table loved the crab noodles which were very light in taste but very delicious, but the winner for me was the side dish of rice. It was sweet and pudding like and went so well with the curry and the pork! Last, but not least we had the roasted carrots with a smoky sauce and they showed just how versatile and skilled the chef was to do so much with simple ingredients like carrots. We were so stuffed we literally couldn’t eat all of our food. It was all so rich and had so many different sauces and flavors. We were completely overwhelmed by this unassuming little restaurant that leaves behind the pretentiousness but delivers on the flavor. We couldn’t leave without trying their dessert and we all shared an order of beignets with vanilla ice cream and red bean paste with a squeeze bottle of caramel sauce on the side. It was the best ice cream sandwich ever. We walked home amazed by this completely unexpected and delightful experience. The service was outstanding, the food was delicious and rich and satisfying and i wondered to myself how it could be that anyone could complain about it. My only advice is, if you are reading this review, if you really like a massive steak hanging off your plate with no sauce, you are definitely in the wrong place; however, if you enjoy watching the imagination of a perfectionist chef run wild, this might be the place for you. After dinner we debated would we go to Marea or Le CouCou or Aqyavit overTuome and we all decided we wouldn’t miss this for the world!!! Go see for yourself, its an unforgettable experience.

Interesting dining

Small, somewhat cramped, low lighting with wooden tales and chairs -- feels kinda like home. The food is interesting, though not always remarkable. Highlights were the wonderful hamachi, perfect scallops, and interesting "pig out" with shredded pork and crisp crackling. Bland sweet potato and peanut butter noodles were disappointing. Service was adequate and prices reasonable, given the quality. I'd go back, though be more careful in ordering.

Great Cooking at Affordable Prices

By Antionio10 |

This was our third meal at Tuome. It gets better with each visit. This last meal we order sunchokes prepared three different ways, quail, wagyu beef and trout. All were exceptional, though the trout not as complex as the other dishes. Service was very good. The restaurant is simple. There is not a lot of fuss when presented with the food or in describing the food. There are appetizers and main courses. No six course pre fixe. Just exceptional Michelin starred cooking without the show. The prices too, at about $100 per person with tax and tip and no alcohol, may be one of the better bargains in town.

the best

The best food I've had in NYC in a while. The pig out is the most delicious thing ever. Will absolutely go back.

Worst NYC Michelin restaurant, by far

By RGSOUNDF |

Unbelievably bad experience, not only for a Michelin-star-studded restaurant but for any decent dining establishment, for that matter. 1. Extremely uncomfortable seating with the tables squeezed in the dining area, "like sardines in a crushd tin box". The tables are so tightly spaced (if spaced at all), that for the entire duration of your meal you will be forced to listen to your fellow diners' discussions of their marital problems or babysitter troubles. Now, we all have heard the excuses about the expensive rent, so we won't compare Tuome with its Midtown counterparts, but with their Michelin and non-Michelin neighbors located in the same area, give or take, such as Contra, Gem or Papilles, each of which manages to keep a certain level of comfort no matter how tight their quarters are. 2. Extremely limited menu. For this level of scarce number of choices the food has to be phenomenal. But is not. It is the same ubiquitous offers of wagyu, fluke, and Momofuku-styled noodles. Everything has been done elsewhere and before, and in a much better way. There is one dessert on the menu. Why? One dessert suggest Jordi Roca is in the kitchen. But he isn't. Everything is boring, uninspiring, utilizing the shortcuts for a restaurant to be labeled a foodie haven. 3. The bathroom's floor was covered with the sticky urine, and we mean covered. How is that for a Michelin ranking? 4. To add insult to injury, upon being handed our check, we inquired if the gratuity was included. Negative. So, we asked, how come our check was $143.72 and the slip presented for our signature was $168.76, i.e. over 25 bucks more? No satisfactory answer was provided. Could it be an honest mistake? Probably. But for some strange coincidence, the mistake was to the benefit of the house/server. Never ever can we recall being overcharged (scammed?) in this fashion, neither in NYC nor in any other place. To conclude we will have to try to avoid using profanities, so just pick and choose a better place than this godawful eatery.

Interesting Place Good food

It's an interesting place with interesting decor and an interesting but limited menu. All in all it's a fun place with a good East Village vibe. The chicken , pork and duck tasted on this visit were all cooked and seasoned very well. The food is Asian inflected and very tasty. The drinks menu is all wine based so no real bar service - sake and wine. The service was attentive but the plates came out as ready so there were small delays until all four of us received our course, and the restaurant was not crowded the night we were there. The interior is attractive and the service was good. They do take a credit card to make a reservation and there is a no show penalty. Would definitely go again.

great storefront restaurant

very creative menu with the specialty being a "pig out" for two which the people with us enjoyed....had the short ribs which were out of this world....cozy atmosphere, creative kitchen, friendly staff...what more could you want!

Special Place in East Village

By Peter E |

Very enjoyable dinner at Tuome last night. Food was inventive and of excellent quality, and the service was impeccable. This restaurant is a little gem in the East Village. Limited menu, but all choices were superb. The octopus in particular stood out, as did the "pig out" dish for two. Unlike other reviewers, we did not find the seats uncomfortable, nor the tables jammed together, on a night when the restaurant was full. All in all, a special place with lots of character.

Must do or you will regret it

By toonk440 |

Super cozy place, small scale and immediate a good feeling. Staff is caduzl but correct, and fast!! Fusion menu is well balanced, selected small variety, but prefer this rather than a wide choice of genetric dishes. What you can chose from is a guarantee for fresh and creative food. Recommendation if you want to have a hassle free casual dinner in a warm and welcome place. I will come back!

Awesome

Another gem in the east village of Manhattan. Fusion cooking with amazing tastes from pork to octopus. The overall experience was nice, service with smiles, albeit tables close to one another. This is a great find.

Underwhelming

By Mayoite658 |

Saw all the great reviews and decided to head there for a nice romantic dinner for two. First off, while thy had tables available we were seated in the thoroughfare which was very disturbing throughout the meal. Second, for a person allergic to shell-fish, the menu shrinks dramatically as a lot of their dishes use oyster sauce. We tried the octopus and chicken liver as starters and both were good. However, the mains were, in our opinion, subpar. The wagu beef reminded me of flank steak! Won’t be going back.

Asian Fusion that's more Asian than Fusion

The chef at Tuome has worked at many of the finest restaurants in NYC. With a bloodline like that, if he were a horse he would be favored to win the Kentucky Derby. Tuome is a winner. The center of interesting cuisine in NYC is moving downtown and east. Don't be put off by the alphabet city location. This is fine cuisine. The menu is small but each dish is unique, with interesting ingredients extremely well prepared. We shared the Pigfest for two. Outstanding sesame nodules with many small squares of crispy pork. Don't miss the sides. The corn with curry, kafir lime and creme fraiche is not your mother's creamed corn. The wine list is very affordable. Vibrant young neighborhood. Definitely worth the trip downtown.

Cool low key restaurant

We went here after seeing a number of tempting pics on Insta and we were not disappointed! We had the soft shell crab, deviled eggs, waguy beef tartar, duck and chicken. All were terrific! Service is great; the staff is friendly and knowledgable. Wine list is great. Go go go!

Tuome at East 5th Street: Must try place

By Sankarmukh |

We, a party of three had reservation at 7:15 pm on Tuesday night. When we arrived, the restaurant was kind of empty but by the time we left, it was full. It has two dining rooms , one of them has a bar counter. We got seated right away. Sparse decor but nice enough. As appetizers, we had Egg, Octopus and Tartare. The deviled egg is wonderful. It is nicely breaded and fried. Tartare was wagyu beef with three hour yolk. It was also quite good. The Octopus with the foam was quite tasty. As entrees, we had Pig out for two and duck. Pig out for two comes with some spicy nnodles and condiments. I think they make the dish tasty. The duck was quite good. We also had two beers. The service is very nice and attentive. Everyone should try this place once. The check with tip for trhee people was $205.00

Intimate Quality Fusion

By CandP-Travelling |

I visited as a solo travelling diner on a Saturday night and could not fault the personal service including sympathetic understanding of my request to have a break between appetiser and entrée - to be prepared on my signal. The octopus appetiser was a delight - crispy on the outside and very moist inside, not at all rubbery, with an intriguing crispy pork mince and foam, both of which provided depth and texture. The halibut with Asian curry flavours was likewise incredibly moist and not overpowered by the subtle sauce (neither too thick or too conconutty). Both dishes interesting but highly accessible and satisfying. The restaurant had a nice intimate atmosphere and felt very personal and stylish but unpretentious. I'll be back if I have an opportunity.

We didn't leave a crumb on our plates!

I've been to Tuome twice. The first time was good and the second time was even better. It's a small space with a lot of tables but it still feels cozy. It has the East Village feel for sure. We started with the fried deviled egg (so yummy!), then had the snow crab noddle dish, then the beef and the kale rice. Everything was delicious and the wine was excellent as well and reasonable too. Highly recommend this place.

Great food, silly small portions and cozy vibe

By intrepidgirlLondon |

Really delicious food - although portions are too small. I had the fluke starter and it was stupidly small. The crab pasta was just right. The steak was perfect but half a teaspoon of puree...why? I mean put enough on a plate to actually have a few bites. Aside for that good winelist and service and a nice cozy vibe.

Amazing

By Comandante-of-Fun |

These inventive, Asian influenced dishes are, for the most part, truly special. Loved the chicken w/ charred lettuce, deviled egg, octopus with pork XO sauce, and beets with quinoa. I was less wild about the pork belly for two, though the noodles that accompanied it were great. This is thoughtful and tasty food at its best. Even the dessert--beignets with ice cream w/ red beans and goats milk caramel sauce--were incredibly well done.

Creative dishes

This was an awesome Tasting Collective dining club event we attended. It was 8-course East Meets West Feast. The inside was small, but cozy and welcoming. The décor was mix of sleek, modern fixtures and reminiscence of the past with the red brick wall throughout the space. I liked the pop of red here and there. They had a small bar with a handful of tables, and then another smaller room to the left with more tables. At this event, we were able to try Watermelon & Ricotta, Chicken Liver Mousse, Crispy Deviled Egg, Fried Chicken, Shrimp On Chip, Snow Crab, Lamb Shank, and Beignet Ice Cream Sandwich. We enjoyed every dish, especially The Crispy Deviled Egg and Fried Chicken. The Deviled Egg was very interesting and tasty, I have never had a deviled egg like the one they have. Very unique and creative! The Fried Chicken was amazing, crispy and juicy, packed with flavor! We also ordered a cocktail, The Blushing Dragon Sangria. It was not sweet, nor strong. The small ice cubes kind of watered down the drink. It didn’t really have much of lychee flavor that I was looking for, which was disappointing. We had a really nice dinner, everything was tasty from the beginning to the end. I would love to go back to taste other innovative dishes, but will stick with the food and not the drink…

Excellent Food in East Village

By Antionio10 |

There were five of us for dinner. The restaurant is small and cramped. The food however is outstanding. It didn't matter what we ate: the squab, the quail, the wagyu beef, dessert, were all excellent. There is a decent and fairly priced wine list. Would go back in a heartbeat. We paid about $100 per person including a bottle of wine.

Love it, Love it

By SandBAtlanta |

It seems crazy to say this, but I'll say it anyway -- the best dish of the night was the side of rice. You gotta have that side of rice! It's wrapped lovingly in a lotus leaf, nestled in a bed of kale, chinese sausage and duck fat. It's heaven in a lotus leaf :) Met friends here, shared the deviled eggs (must have), the persimmon (average) and the octopus in XO sauce (another must have). We also shared the duck and chicken entrees. Probably preferred the chicken over the duck, but both were really great. Wine is great, service is great. No attitudes here. Just friendly folks serving great food at reasonable prices. Solid, consistent, one of my faves in the city.

Absolutely superb food

By HamlinGuy |

Such a great find in the East Village. This is a relatively small place with limited drink options, but the food was phenomenal. Very inventive dishes with an Asian fusion twist. The snow crab with squash ribbons was everyone’s favorite.

just excellent

By Allie C |

We absolutely loved everything we had: the crab pasta, the octopus, the fluke, and wagyu beef. We try octopus basically everywhere that has it, and this is the best octopus we’ve had in the US. The portions were good and the prices very reasonable for this level of quality. We are very excited to return to Tuome.

Great Execution of the Food

By Seadon S |

Tuome was a delight. I have been there 3 times now and it has been great each time. Some of our favorites are the chicken pate, octopus, and deviled eggs. Highly recommended.

Wow!

By michchk |

Came here on Friday night. It's a nice cozy place. The restaurant was busy. We ordered almost the entire menu. The egg, wow, I can't stop dreaming about it. It was so good I had to order another one. My other favorites I would have to say are the octopus, chicken and duck. The chicken was perfectly cooked and it came with a delicious rice porridge and a basil sauce. I can eat this over and over again. The octopus is braised then crisped up and served with xo and a espuma that I wish could be served on everything. Will definitely return on my next visit to New York.

Good Option for Good Food

My booked restaurant of choice, a repeat favorite of mine, had to cancel dinner reservations due to electrical issues which shut down the house, so here is me all dressed up seeking sustenance on the fly. Enter Tuome, which luckily had an opening. The decor struck me as, right or wrong, hipster, don't ask me why. Natural brick walls, spare wood furniture, bare bulb fixtures (which didn't do much to dispel the gloom). Due to the small space, it got very loud. Kudos to the very accommodating staff, who allowed me not only to check in 30 minutes early of my last-minute booking but also offered an indoor seat when my reservation was for the chilly outside. The service overall was outstanding. There was no indication of being rushed out the door, but each dish appeared at the precise moment the one prior was consumed and cleared away. I didn't scarf down my food and I was done and check paid in under an hour. The East Village Blossom cocktail was well-made. I really enjoyed the beignets with hummus amuse bouche, the sunchoke-three-ways appetizer, and the noodles with king crab. There was a small piece of cartilage in the crab dish, a minor prep hiccup. The app and main tended to the sweet side, so I felt free to skip dessert. The prices are a trifle high for the portion size which is tempering my unqualified approval.

Absolutely Loved It!

Not too long after we made our reservation at Tuome we discovered that their octopus dish was just named as one of the best in the city, so we were really excited about our dinner We were warmly greeted by the host and seated immediately. The menu is chocked full of dishes I wanted to try, but when we try new restaurants we try to venture out and order dishes we haven't seen before. Fried deviled eggs? I mean, I've had dozens of deviled eggs, but never fried. They were out of this world. Next, the octopus. I mean, you have to have one of the best dishes in NYC, right? Again, phenomenal. For our entree we were really tempted to try the Pig out for Two, but we knew we couldn't manage all of that food. Instead, we shared the Beef Short Rib and at the waiter's suggestion we got a side of sticky rice. The short rib was so tender, so delicious. But that sticky rice??? No words can describe this rice. I will have dreams about that sticky rice. It was beautifully wrapped in a lotus leaf and cooked in duck fat with little nuggets of chinese sausage. Heaven. The wine is reasonable and the pour is not chintzy. Servers are awesome. Tuome is a huge two thumbs up in our book.

A highlight

We went here as part of New York restaurant week. We had never been to the East village area so got there early for a wander around which we continued after dinner. We loved it! Lively with lots of great bars and restaurants etc off the main drag. Tuome was wonderful. We had the tomato and watermelon salad starter and also the pate mousse followed by the pig out for two. Huge amount of food beautifully presented. The berry tart was one of the best desserts I have ever had in a restaurant. Often way too sweet...this was fab. Good staff and nice fit out. One toilet for such a popular place seemed a little limited. Great food experience.

Good but not great Asian influenced food

By Justine928 |

We came by for restaurant week on a Sunday. Normally Tuome is not open on Sundays and we had a number of service & timing issues that maybe were due to having different or incomplete staff for the day? Our meal started with an amuse bouche, which was vegetable chips and a ricotta dip. While I can't eat ricotta, my friends said it tasted like nothing so I was not missing out. While waiting for our first course (for a while) they came around with lamb dumplings and mentioned they had some dim sum dishes in celebration of Chinese New Year. The lamb dumpling was absolutely perfect but unfortunately the only outstanding item of the meal. For my meal, I had the beef tartare to start. The tartare has a sweeter profile and adding some salt helped a lot for me. While waiting for our second course (again for a while), they came around with langoustine spring rolls, which were fine but not anything notable. For the main course, I had the chicken with porridge. The chicken was nicely cooked (sous vide) but there was nothing unique flavorwise about the dish for me. I tried a bite of my friends' pig out (pork belly & peanut butter noodles) and it was decent, though a bit rich for my tastes. On the drink side, we did a bottle of the syrah they have by the glass and it was really nice. Overall, Tuome is a solid good but not great restaurant for me.

Faultless and delicious

Beautiful restaurant in the heart of hip NYC. Truly incredible food. We ordered across the menu and everything was perfection; the eggs, quail, fluke tartar, wagyu beef, fish were truly memorable. A humble carrot side was out of this world. We have awoken talking about the food this morning....it was inspiring. Do not miss this dining experience. Get a table any which way!

Do Not Sit at the bar.

- Food was tasty; BUT appetizers are small and overpriced!!! - "Maitre'd" was friendly - We sat at many bars for dinner; but these bar stools are VERY uncomfortable!

Excellent food

By KCO_foodie |

The food here is really creative and very tasty. 5/5 for that. The reason we are giving a 4 rating is their disinterest in accommodating food allergies. We shared all our allergies in advance, and when we got there were told they couldn’t modify most of the dishes for them. In our experience, restaurants that don’t have the flexibility to accommodate (particularly Michelin star ones) call to advise before letting you come. That didn’t happen here. Still, the food we could have was very good.
