Incredible flavors, even for vegetarians!

By albertsova |

Stumbled across this small place and decided to try it even though there was maybe one vegetarian thing on the printed menu and ended up having my best meal in months. Our server (who was wonderful) listed many specials, including three veg preparations. I ordered all three and was impressed by the chef's ingenuity with vegetables, especially since the place has a bar feel and Basque food is known for seafood and meat. First revelation: king Mushrooms were sliced paper thin and arranged in a floral pattern. Whatever was in the marinade made them succulent, fragrant and unlike any mushroom I've had. Eggplant special featured familiar combo of eggplant, cheese and tomato, but done completely differently. Unusual frying technique on the eggplant and dots of super-concentrated sauce. Bean special featured some unusual bean that releases a smoky flavor when cooked...I have to figure out what it was and try to make 'em at home. All three dishes had a bit of a jewel box feel to me. Perfect morsels with vivid flavors. Nice Tempranillo was a good accompaniment. Thinking of booking a special event here just to ask the chef to make more meatless dishes...

San Sebastian Spain in Chelsea

By RedShoesM |

Have been here twice and each time I discover something more delicious. My favorites are the mushroom carpaccio, the arugala salad with egg and crispy fried silverfish and the serrano ham with egg sandwich. Last night we tasted the yummy, crispy perfectly cooked suckling pig with chimmicurri sauce. All perfect. The staff are delightful, warm and welcoming and helpful and honest in their selections. The surprise was the glass of champagne at the end of the meal to celebrate our anniversary. LOVED< LOVED< LOVED it all, Even the tiny quarters and lack of decor. A must go if you like the taste of San Sebastian in NY!

Okay, but not amazing

By A M |

Okay, but not incredible. The menu sounds a lot more interesting than the dishes are in execution. Our favorite plates were the trout special (very good) and the cheesecake. The potato appetizer was just basic French fries and the summer squash dish was also pretty underwhelming. Sort of a strange layout and a bit cramped. Service was good but not great (server was very friendly but assured us allergens we flagged weren’t in some dishes until being corrected by the kitchen, etc.). Overall it was cool to try once but will remove from my list of restaurant recs.

Fabulous flavours

By What |

Best meal ever in New York. Not only were all the dishes we had astoundingly good - explosions of flavour - but we got an outside table on a beautiful evening and were served by Maria, who was charming, helpful, professional, bright and intelligent. So everything was perfect. We shared about six dishes plus the "torta" dessert (a wonderful almond and drunken cherry tart). It's hard to single out any one dish, but the white asparagus with chopped egg was probably the highlight among highlights. Being outside, we avoided the noise referred to in some reviews. But with food like this I might force myself to put up with a little noise. And it's not unduly expensive. We will certainly return on our next visit to New York. Can't wait!

Went here with a family group

By th0masft |

Went here with a family group last year and enjoyed a wide variety of vegetable, meat and seafood tapas. Highly recommend the octopus and squid and lamb shank! An interesting and fun experience!

Best restaurant! Love!

Everything About this place is perfect. I love to go there. The food is incredible, service impecable and gorgeous inside. You can go for casual bites or formal dinner. Nothing like it anywhere in nyc. A must! Especially if you're visiting Chelsea at scene

The best!

By Claudia R |

This is the best basque restaurant I've ever visited! Tasty and well prepared food, many alternatives and perfect presentation to share with or eat alone. And also you may have very good beer and/or sangria as well as wine. Definitively I'll be back!

Basque Cousine

By Mitchell W |

Never had Basque food before. Loved this little restaurant. Small plates of interesting food. Great flavors that were often new to me. Started with mushroom carpaccio. Had a cauliflower dish with an egg that you had to mix together, it was delicious. Lamb meatballs were great. Good beer on tap. Service was terrific.

A Delightful Dinner!

By Jay F |

On visiting NYC we arrived at Newark about 5 pm and caught a ride to our hotel near 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue. I looked for interesting restaurants in the area and came up with Txikito! The idea of a Basque tapas restaurant was appealing and the food reviews were good so we made it our first night destination. I emailed the restaurant to explain our arrival schedule and asked for a reservation. They responded they don't usually do reservations for tables for two but...they agreed to do so for us! We arrived about 15 minutes early and the place was jammed. They asked for a few minutes and we were seated about ten minutes later - and before our reservation. We asked our waiter for ordering advice and he suggested ordering two dishes each and sharing, commenting that we could order more once we got going. We ordered a mix of menu and special items and ultimately ordered a total of six dishes. The food and wine were all wonderful. A bit pricey but so was the quality. And our waiter was quite personable and helpful. Would love to go back and explore the menu more thoroughly as we watched a variety of interesting dishes at nearby tables. My advice would be to go and simply order what appeals to you. Based on our experience iit will be exceptional!

good chelsea tapas

By cindy c |

We arrived later in the dining service & the staff was accommodating. we enjoyed a variety of tapas- favorites included Boqueron, and Tutera- a lovely gratin of artichoke. We also liked the Marijuli- red peppers with cheese, and especially the Octopus carpaccio. Drink menu is limited, wine and beer & oddly enough (in our opinion) the only choice of alcohol is gin.

A Basque delight in NYC!!

By Riff M |

We had a wonderful dinner at Tzikito Sunday night! We got there early (6sh) but the place quickly filled up completely so it was good that they take reservations. We enjoyed exploring the menu and ordered from all of its sections. The staff was helpful in explaining the size of the portions and most dishes were meant to be shared. I don't think there was anything that we did not enjoy! I keep dreaming about the food so I KNOW I will return!

Heavenly tapas and beyond

By RedShoesM |

While Txikito looks like a neighborhood place with a small bar upfront and two very small dining rooms this place will blow your mind. In the spirit of great Spanish food from San Sebastián they create tapas to die for. Have been there many times and they always impress. Great service with a friendly attitude that make you feel welcome and part of the family. Fresh ingredients prepared skillfully with wonderful spices. My favorite is always the elephant mushroom sliced thinly with olive oil, garlic and tomato. Also this trip the sea bass was amazing. Even the white sangria was refreshingly summer! And dessert, assuming you have room, was deliciously decadent. I am almost afraid to say such great things to give away this secret find, but truly a gem in Manhattan.

Average food, but do not forget a microscope for the order size! (specially considering the very high prices)"

By hotelator62 |

Both in my original country, Argentina, and in Spain, where I have lived for many years, there is a tradition of excellent cooking and abundant portions. In Spain, probably the Vasque people ar the ones who can claim they eat the more, and, probably, the best. Veal, fish, everything is excellent there, and the old grandmas will feed you to death! As a musician, I was lucky to travel in many countries and regions, and in very few places have I eaten food of such quality and quantity as in the Vasque Country, a region of Spain geographically, but which Vasque people claim to be their own country, with enough historical background to do so. But let's not be distracted by political considerations, and get into the review of this small Vasque oriented restaurant in Chelsea, NYC. The food would be average in any Spain restaurant, but of course becomes overrated in this city where, honestly, people do not have much idea about what a good meal is, with all my respect, unless they pay $150 per person. At Txikito, the Croquetas were ok, the Xangurro slightly better and the Bacalao Pil Pil even better. But, guys, you have to make up your mind whether you have a Rstaurant, with real life portion sizes, or a Tapas place, where you expect to get a little taste of the dishes, and price the food accordingly! This Tapas stule is typical in Spain, specially in the Vasque Country, so you get used to order many things, as the sizes will be small, and you pay a few euros per course. At Txikito, we were seduced by the Special of the day: Cochinillo (baby pig), priced $32 (thirty two dollars). Considering the price, we thought we'd b able to share it as a main course after the Tapas, but...NO! the whole thing was a thin rib that occupied just the center of the plate. for $32!!!! what is worst: it was dry! I have eaten Cochinillo in Segovia, where it is the main course, and you can literally cut it with your fingers, so tender is the meat. Not at this place. Honestly, guys, if you charge $32 for a Tapa in Spain, you will get your throat cut by the customer, a way of speaking. The Cod fish was also the smallest portion I have ever seen, and I recalled we paid $18 or 15 for that... Average Vasque food, average service for $50 each...so if you plan to have a Spanish night, better head to Sala, or Socarrat...you will pay the same, but will really eat! If you plan to come here, make sure you have dinner beforehand, and to bring your microscope so you can find the food in the plate. Another place in NYC that abuses of the lack of knowledge Americans have about typical foods from abroad.

Relaxing rustic atmosphere serving up a variety of small plates with subtle nuances of incredible flavor. Try the mini mushroom and shrimp grilled cheese on the cutest tastiest pieces of fresh little bread. The chorizo hash sandwich and seared veal jowl terrine were also busting with amazingly simple flavors. The suckling pig special was also full of smokey goodness. Can't wait to get back to try more of their menu...

Delicious but very pricey.

By crapschick |

The hubby and I went there last night for dinner and weren't disappointed, although it was very pricey. We had a slow roasted pig (the waiter said it was roasted for 11 hours) that just melted in our mouth. Absolutely melted in our mouths and completely delicious. We also ordered the ribs, which were small but delicious. The shrimp were good and in a delicious sauce and the crab cakes with cheese were good as well. All in all it was a delicious meal but just very pricey.

Tasty but small portion

By foodlovergirlny |

This is a review of the even by Tasting Collective that we attended. It was a 10 course Traditional Basque Feast. This restaurant is owned and operated by husband and wife chef team. They have a few other restaurants in NYC. I always enjoy Basque style food, Spanish cuisine and tapas, so I was excited for this event. The interior is heavy with wood, making it cozy and warm atmosphere that is so inviting. They have two rooms, one with a bar and small amount of seating, and another room with many more table seating. We were pretty crammed in the second room, barely fitting the table, sitting over the edge… And since there were no space to put everyone’s coats and bags, the seating was really, REALLY tight. At this event, we got to try Marijuli, Croqueta de Bakalo, Pimientos de Gernika, Mondatio Tutera, Pulpo de Roca, Gulas del Monte, Bakalo Andra Mari, Pochas, Cochinillo, and Txakoli Poached Pear. Even though this was a tasting event, the amount of food we received was very small. They were all tasty, high quality, and some dishes were even creative and very interesting. I wish if we had a bit more portion so that we could fully appreciate the flavor of each dish. The best thing fro the 10 course was Pulpo de Roca and the dessert. We had a nice dinner here. Each dish was very tasty and high quality. I liked the uniqueness of the dishes and creativity that came with it. It was not as comfortable, as we were over the edge of the table, and the portion received was small…but we were still happy to attend this event. Chef Alex was great, provided us with loads of interesting information and very personable.

Consistently outstanding

By 33map |

This is more than the typical "tapas bar" this is fine cuisine, creative, delicious, fairly priced and beautiful.

On point

By Webberfan79 |

Small plate Spanish Basque Country foods - also offering full size platters for one or to share. Service was quick and friendly and informative. Once we ordered the food, it came out in very quick succession. The foie gras was like butter, and the cured pork loin simply melted in your mouth. Everything was cooked perfectly and reasonably priced for the area and the offerings.

Spanish tapas

We have a group of 16 and the service was excellent. We took up the inner half of the place and was kept to our group. We had pleasant surprise with the quality and the creativity.

Excellent and interesting Basque pintxos in Chelsea

By James G |

I was looking for somewhere to go with a friend during a visit to NYC for a relatively light meal and stumbled across Txikito, which seemed an excellent choice. My instincts were right--the range of dishes is extraordinary, and would satisfy most anyone. We started with a few glasses of beer and some olives, and followed this up with four or five tapas-sized dishes that demonstrated the kitchen's skill with the genre. Be sure to try the octopus carpaccio, gratin of artichoke and sliced mushrooms. The atmosphere is casual, but very comfortable, but be warned--if you are there when Spain is playing football, the back wall will be occupied by a large-format TV screen and the staff and patrons will be engaged in cheering their side on!

Tapas place

By tiziana b |

nice place with delicious tapas; I tried the one with quail egg, the one with chorizo, and another one with foie gras. Also the main dishes were good. I really like the tongue, it was the first time I tried it!

Delicious unprounouncable food with great servers to translate for you!

By Coilltebabe99 |

Wanted someplace close to Penn station to meet a friend for quiet dinner & drinks when I stumbled across a food critics review of Txikito & just had to give it a try. Its located 9th ave between 24/25 so its not around the corner but a nice walk. I emailed a day or two in advance for a reservation however they don't take them for parties of two, we arrived at 6.30 and the place was quiet, within an hour every table was taken so our timing couldn't have been better. We tried almost everything on the menu, highlights were the creamy croquettes (we ordered 5 rounds of them) the arraultza (sofrito, palacios chorizo, quail egg), crab gratine & the chocolate flan with brandied cream. Only things that didn't please the palate were the foie gras, too sweet for me and the cider which was just downright funky. Overall great food, good prices & a cool little joint.

One of our favorite places for tapas

By lizinvt |

Txikito was recommended to us by the owner of the excellent tapas restaurant Elephant in Kingston, NY. Wow, was she spot on! Everything we tried was super fresh and expertly prepared. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and steered us toward some dishes we might not have otherwise tried. They had quite a few Basque classics, but the hands-down favorite of the night was the "nude" gnocchi in squid ink, closely followed by the octopus carpaccio. Sublime! A bit pricey when you add in a bottle of fine Tempranillo, but well worth every cent.

Just okay

By nyckk |

I was looking forward to the tapas but it was below the average of other tapas places in the city. The specials started out very strong like the eggplant and beets but the tapas off the menu felt heavy and greasy. I was especially disappointed with the service. My water glass sat empty for the last hour of my dinner and no one asked us if we wanted more to drink after the wine was done. If you want great service, this is not the place to come

An adventure

By DAO51 |

We had never been to a Basque restaurant before, and looking at the menu was a little daunting. No matter. Our server, Carlos, guided us through the offerings, at a casual pace. Order a little, eat a little, then repeat. Everything was delicious, although the hands-down winner was the whole turbot presented and de-boned at the table. A surprise was that the food was very spicy, but not with heat, This isn't a tapas bar. The fish and meat courses were dinner-sized. The early menu items were small, but that left a lot of room for dinner. Bottom line: we ate and drank well, and had fun. This is a NY restaurant. Don't be shocked that the price can quickly escalate. I recommend Txikito highly.

Great Little Place

By David C |

We attempted to go to Quinto Pino without a reson a recommendation from a friend but there were completely full. The manager referred us to Txikito, their sister restaurant run by the same chefs. It was a small, cozy place just around the corner with a Spanish, mostly Basque, menu (so we were told, I wouldn't have known myself!). The menu had a nice collection of options with medium sized plates that were perfect for sharing. We had the octopus carpaccio (which was amazing) the BBQ short ribs (pretty good), and the roasted suckling pig in chimichurri (sp?) sauce. The pork was really good and remarkable tender, though I wasn't overly fond of the charred skin that was left on - it was a bit too chewy, but still not bad. The service was prompt, professional, and courteous. The atmosphere was casual but nice, and it was not overly loud in the place (a common occurrence in modern restaurants, in my opinion). Would I return here? Absolutely! Great food, great service - a real treat when in Chelsea.

Small plates

By AdQueen |

I've been here twice now and have mixed feelings about it. It's in a kind of quiet location, 9th ave between 24th and 25th, next door to Sullivan St Bakery and CoPane. Interior is dark and exposed-wood walls, there is a bar and also table service seating. They also have a secondary dining room for private parties. Atmosphere is a little muted compared to other Tapas places in Chelsea/Flatiron. They have music playing and you can definitely have a conversation in here which is a positive if thats what you want to do. But it doesn't have much of a vibe other than that. The food individually has been good. I like the croquettes and the fries, and the pepper. The only problem is that everything is really small, which is often the case for Tapas but somehow here I always feel like it is a bit stingy. Croquettes are a good example. You get two of them on the one plate, but they are really bite size, not larger croquettes that you might get elsewhere and eat in 3 bites. The stuffed peppers are essentially half a small pepper - a couple of bites max each. They do say that these are small plates, and its true, so when you plan to eat here you need to budget accordingly for 4 small plates for one person, or perhaps 2 small and one medium plate. That said, they do have daily specials which include large plates but they are priced in the $30 range which seems over the top for the location and style. One massive positive in my mind about the food is that it is served super hot, i.e. you know they just cooked it and it is fresh. Really good on that front. Wine is served in tumbler glasses which I dislike as the wine warms up but the wine itself is nice and a reasonable price $10 glass of chardonnay. We tried the special dessert this time around which was ricotta donuts and they were very good indeed. Like I say, I have mixed feelings about this place! Recommend if you want somewhere quiet-ish, low-key and are ok to order several things from the menu. Also there is a dearth of restaurants on this particular stretch of Ninth (unless you go further downtown to Fonda, Tipsy Parson etc) so it can be a good choice if you need to be in this specific area.

Charming little place

Interesting Basque small plates in a charming little restaurant. Perfect for a late night snack for two. If you like Spanish tapas, you will enjoy Txikito, the Sangria was great!

Exciting dining experience

By Sarah W |

I am so glad we discovered this small yet exciting restaurant in Chelsea. Focusing on Basque style tapas, the menu features five main categories: para picar (basically bar snacks), pintxos (small sandwiches), vegetables/salads, del mar (seafood), and carnes (meats). The portion sizes get larger the further down the menu you go, so the 'para picar' options are tiny while the seafood and carnes portions are larger. Keep in mind that, as with any tapas restaurant, you'll share everything but nothing is entree-sized -- even the relatively larger plates of carnes are small. We ordered something from each category, plus a special for that day, which came to six plates for two people (we stopped at six due to time constraints, but could have easily gone with one or two more plates). Highly recommend all of them: Gildas (three olives on a toothpick, wrapped with anchovies), txiki txanpi (mini porcini mushroom sandwiches, cooked like tiny grilled cheeses), piperrak (blistered gernika peppers, which are like shishito peppers), txipiron "Encebollado" (squid cut into ribbons like spaghetti, in an almond sauce -- this is apparently one of their most popular dishes), albondigas (lamb meatballs), and then a special of sweet shrimp with trout roe. We had the house temperanillo, which went well with everything we ordered. I found all of the dishes to be thoughtful and well-curated. It was exciting to discover new flavors with each course. The ambiance is somewhat rustic and intimate, though as the restaurant filled throughout the evening, it became boisterous. Being too close for comfort might be a downside for some -- if so, opt to dine earlier in the evening. Reservations strongly encouraged, as it's a small restaurant that filled up quickly. Highly recommend!

A little gem not far from the high line

By finny123 |

Lovely unique dishes, exquisitely prepared. Lots of pintxos to choose and experiment different flavors and tastes. Unfortunately we came with kids because this is not a place for them, food a little too gourmet and portions very small considering the prices.. Perfect for couples though. Fabulous service, thank you Carlos.

Worth every penny!

By Brian P |

Lovely dinner her last night with my husband and I. I had eaten here years ago and it was our first time back since reopening. Amazing Basque cuisine! Every bite was delicious! The only issue is the shareable plates were all quite small and the prices were a bit high for the portions, but prices in NYC are high everywhere to be able to enjoy a dinner out. We had ordered 2 cold and 2 hot plates and wasn’t enough food so ordered the suckling pig special which was quite a good size and definitely satisfied us. 5 dishes plus 1 cocktail = $165 plus $30 tip. Worth it! I HIGHLY recommend dining here!

Fun to share

By amyh619 |

We were a table of 4 that ordered almost everything on the menu. All of the food was great, but the sangria, lamb, gnocchi and the chocolate flan were the table favorites. Great service and atmosphere. Loud, but you could hear your table with no problem. I would definitely return.

Unusual and wonderful Basque cuisine

By Mark P |

Txikito is a Basque take on Spanish tapas cuisine, with a variety of small plates that are meant to be shared. The recipes are mostly unique, including a fabulous octopus carpaccio. The service is attentive, and the decor is pleasant if basic.

A Long Way From Baecelona...

By meira_10 |

We just came back from dinner in this Chelsea Zagat's recommended Spanish restaurant. We were so disappointed with the quality of food. With our helpful waiter's assistance we chose 5 dishes - Tutera: gratin of artichoke, Roncal, jamón, one of tonight's specials - Carpaccio of mushrooms, Pulpo: octopus Carpaccio; lemon oil, marjoram, Piment d'espelette, Albondigas: lamb meatballs with minted broth & Txilndron: spicy cross-cut pork spare rib. Most dishes were mediocre. They lacked "soul". Bread was dry, lamb meatballs were heavy, had no "air" in them, the mushroom dish had no flavor. Basically, there was no taking advantage of the huge selection of fresh and wonderful ingredients NY is blessed with that could have turned a Tapas restaurant into heaven.

Excellent

Modern interior. Well thought-out small tasty Basie region food. Helpful efficient service. Great, interesting well priced wine. Do not miss.

Excellent Basque tapas

By Judy A |

We were looking for an interesting place in Chelsea and Txikito came recommended by friends. Wow! We ordered several plates to share, which gave us the opportunity to try things we might normally not order. I would never think to order octopus carpaccio, poached salt cod or foie gras - but everything we ordered was outstanding. The drink menu was not as impressive as the tapas menu, but there we some winning cocktails. The service at Txikito was very good. Definitely recommended!

Excellent food at moderate cost!

By Karamelized1 |

This is a superb restaurant primarily serving Basque food. They have a good variety of dishes, a great choice of tapas in case you choose not to have a large entrée, and all supported by a very good wine list. The staff is warm and friendly, the ambience is casual - what more can anyone want?

Shhhh - don't tell any one - it's one of the best

By Carol-Ann D |

From the barn siding walls, taken from a farm in New Hampshire to the beef that is aged on the spot, this Basque and tapas restaurant can't be beat. By the way, the chef also salts his own cod. The tapas with wild mushrooms, poached in garlic olive oil is wonderful, the salt cod, also poached in olive oil is truly memorable. There is also suckling pig and, on occasion, the biggest and best rib eye on the bone one can find in Manhattan. The wine list is up to the task and features wines from the Basque region. We dined here two nights in a row - that's how good it is......

Delicious food at a price

By RERD09 |

Walked in on Sunday night and seated quickly. It is small and somewhat crowded. Orders were taken quickly and food came out on time. Very tasty small plates with good variety. Octopus carpaccio was nice. Open face chorizo and quail egg sandwiches also good. Tried the suckling pig which was also good. We had some basque rose wine that accompanied the dishes well. Service was good but a bit slow. Our only thought is that the food is pretty expensive and the portions are small. That being said, we really did enjoy the experience and the interesting food that is not available in many places.

Wonderfully tasty tapas

By Harvey Z |

This Basque restaurant always pleases the palate. We had 8 different dishes and each morsel was simply divine. Ask you server for suggestions and get a good mix of specials and regular menu items. You won't be disappointed. The price adds up, so savor every morsel. It's worth it.

Best Suckling Pig in NYC!

By Concorde |

Do you know that feeling when you bite into something and your whole body shimmers with pleasure? Well, if you like that kind of experience then head over to 24th and 9th and order the SP at Txikito! Everything else was yummy too. And, they have a reasonable corkage fee, with excellent service and fine glassware. My new fave in the City!

perfect for a late lunch

By world_weary069 |

with its open front, clean and modern interior, and hipster staff, txikito is ideal for grabbing some tapas and a cold draft beer in the afternoon. sampled their burger, salt cod croquettes, and blood sausage wonton rolls. all were excellent, particularly the blood sausage, which was a wonderful take on the traditional sausage, but finished in a crisply fried wonton wrapper. a nice way to finish the tour of the high line park nearby. . .

Can only give a GOOD

By Ritz1165 |

Despite loving this place. Nothing really tasted amazing. The idea was there but, for example, the mushroom and cheese toasts, while cute, were bland. The foie gras was mealy (though the geleé was excellent). The artichoke and cheese was dry. Loved the tripe and trotters. Always enjoy the wine list. Service good.

A great surprise

By greg j |

We stumbled upon Txikito when the place we were looking for was closed. This was very fortunate for we had an excellent meal. The special asparagus and morels was fantastic. My dining partner started with the fried artichokes and eggplant sauce. These were simply delicious with the eggplant very delicately fried. I also had the special of imported tuna and beans. Again, excellent. The meal ended with their Spanish flan. It had the consistency of pot de crème and was one of the best chocolate desserts I have ever had. We are very happy the other restaurant was closed. It was a little on the pricey side, but the flavors made it worth it.

Fantastic Gem of a Tapas Bar

By saltshaker |

Just loved the food. None of it fancy, all of it tasty. I could go back and have the mussels and white bean dish or the squid-ink stewed calamari anytime, along with a plate of the roasted peppers. Service is great - friendly and helpful. The wine selection is fun and completely appropriate to the food. The only downfall to the place - the room feels like you're in a neighborhood cafe, there's just no charm to it at all.

Called in to ask if we could bring wine. They charge 10 USD corkage. I thought that was very reasonable for NYC. Friendly staff. Food was very good. Family style dining. Very chill place and was quite busy on a Wednesday night.

Could've eaten my way through the menu

By Joan C |

A tiny and friendly restaurant where the waiters are knowledgeable and helpful. The diners are friendly as well and the table next to us asked our feedback on each dish since they arrived a little later than us. We tried 8 plates and 2 desserts, and each one was unique and very tasty. I'd definitely come here again!

Could have been great!

By SusanMFlorida |

Two things diminished our dinner at Txikito - one, our waitress, (annoying and surly) insisted that we order 2-3 dishes apiece, even though some of them were full plates; and two, the mediocre sangria, for which there is no excuse. Just rip off Bobby Flay's recipe, please! Otherwise, there were some real standout dishes including the cochinillo (roast pig) and the trout topped with slices of serrano ham. This restaurant is one of the more comfortable tapas/pintxo places in town with actual tables and real chairs (vs. table tops and high stools) reasonably spaced - perfect for our group of five. I would definitely go back, order beer and avoid that waitress like the plague!

Some of the best in the U.S.

By Gem W |

Pintxos, tapas, small plates....whatever you want to call it, it does not matter. This is a great restaurant. Firmly rooted in Basque style cooking this little gem transported me to San Sebastián. The croquetas were crisp and creamy, the chorizo, bold and authentic. I ate a lovely dish of calamari with crushed piñon and lemon.....miraculous! The crispy morcilla ( blood sausage ) bites were delectable as were the toasts with chorizo and quail egg. Finished off with a simple yogurt, walnut, honey dessert. With 12 thousand other choices in NYC, I returned here the following night!

5* food, 4* for most else

By Zedd97511 |

The food was excellent, fresh, quality ingredients, thoughtfully prepared and presented. Price about on par for NYC, given the quality of the food. Fairly extensive wine list which we barely looksed at having already decided on a Basque wine. Specials were stand-outs for different reasons. First- goosehead barnacles- when’s the next time we’re going to be able to try a barnacle? Ok let’s go for it. Was not sure what to expect. Briny, meaty, a little chewy, simply prepared. I enjoyed it but I have no frame to reference. Butterflied trout with razor thin slices of ham was the other special that was also superb. Cod- fine, nothing wring with it, but forgettable in comparison to the trout. Gilda pintxos good, the anchovy was meaty and a little briny without a hint of fishiness. Foie gras good but the accompaniment of pickled rose and a ?hot pepper jam was more interesting than the foie gras itself. Capracchio of king oyster mushrooms was superb- must not miss. Potato salad on the other hand… utterly missable. I mean nothing wrong with it but not worth ordering again. Service started blistering fast- too fast with one dish brought to the table before others had been finished. The pace then slowed to a crawl at the end. Timing needs work. Servers were pleasant and helpful. Table was small, even for 2 people. And the table was right next to the combination of the entry to the kitchen and bathrooms- which I hate. The space is loud to begin with- all concrete, right angles, not a lot to absorb sound. It was very difficult to have a conversation. Kitchen noise, staff whisking by, and people standing over you waiting for the bathroom. Not a great combo. Would go back, try different things… and sit somewhere else.

Excellent Spanish Cuisine

By oveja |

Txikito has very good Spanish offerings, including anchovies. en vinegar. The octopus(pulpo) is also very good. They have a good wine selection. It's rather small and can be crowded and noisy, but it's very Spanish in that regard.

This was our 1st meal out in NYC on a very quick 48 hour visit! We ordered lots of small plates to share and a pitcher of white sangria. The frites were very tasty-- the aioli sauce was great! We ordered 2 ! The thinly sliced octopus was nice, mushrooms good. I can't remember everything we had! Sangria was tasty--not overly strong. We're light weight " drinkers"! Overall--- a nice evening-- Service was very good as well! Small place--- better make reservations! Enjoy.... We traveled from Philadelphia and Cincinnati!

Don't Waste Your Time.

By Msneese |

Unfortunately, this was the first meal that my wife and I had on our first trip to New York. Our waiter was friendly enough but somewhat inattentive. That's the best that I can say about the place. Out of the five dishes that we ordered, not one had the slightest thing interesting about it. Off flavors from what tasted like uncontrolled grease fires affected a few of the dishes. Everything else was bland and uneventful. $80.00 bucks and we had to stop and get a slice of pizza on the way back to the room because we were still hungry. If I thought this was the indicative of what New York yad to offer I'd fly home early.

Delicious!

By tinatravels12 |

Everything was delicious! Lamb meatballs, Spare ribs, arugula salad. Great Rose wine.

incredible

By Kristin H |

We started with the croquetas, which, to use a tired adjective, sublime. I don't know what other word to use to describe something that makes your eyes roll to the back of your head and your tongue do jumping jacks, so "sublime" it is. The blistered peppers were really spicy, then the next one wasn't, then the next one was. Just the right amount of spice - when you thought it was too much, it toned down, and then it ramped back up again. The drink we had, carrasco viejo (sp?) was a perfect complement to the food - not too sweet, not too dry. We also tried a special - a whole trout with crispy serrano ham. One of the best fish dishes we've ever had. Just incredible. We finished off the dinner with the cheese platter - something that so many restaurants disappoint with but which we knew would be perfect here. And it was. Go.

Basque Gem on 9th Avenue

We had four small plates from the seafood alone and all were memorable, especially thin sliced octopus and squid ribbons (looked like fettuccine). Unique and innovative cozy place. Bill can add up fast with small plates, but a nice treat.

Fabulous Tastes-great Wine By the Glass

By Pfitzgerald1946 |

What a find! This small restaurant packs a wallop with its Basque tapas. If you have ever been to San Sebastián, the tourist town of basque food at the border of France and Spain, you are familiar with the best tapas in the world. This place rivals those many bar/ restaurants. Here it is salt cod mixed with a variety of flavors plus eggplant, peppers, cucumber and other veges. It is one of my favorite all time Manhattan dining experiences. Wine by the glass is 1/4 of the bottle price so we ordered four different glasses. They were all great food wines but I liked the very dry white inexpensive house wine. Service was impeccable and servers are knowledgeable.

Ridiculously expensive

By Aloysi40 |

The food is great; no complaints there. However, the portions are EXTREMELY small (gives a whole new meaning to tapas). But as if that weren’t enough, the price point is absurd. We spent so much money that it was borderline highway robbery. I’ve travelled extensively throughout Spain for the past 20 years and have never paid anywhere close to what we paid for tapas the other night! I get it, it’s NYC, but the cost is prohibitive for a casual night out. We could have gone to a more upscale restaurant and not leave feeling underfed. I wouldn’t go back. Sorry. Oh, the service was perfect. Our server, I belive it was Chad, was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Tasting

By nywelshgirl |

I was there for a 6-course group tasting, which was excellent. The beef tartare, cod carpaccio and short rib was amazing. If in that area, I would definitely go back.

interesting and tasty tapas, but it can get expensive

By freedshop |

My husband and I had a late dinner here after seeing a dance performance at the Joyce in Chelsea. We got there about 10 pm on Friday night and did not have to wait for a table, though it got busier after a while. It's a casual place with rustic decor that reminds me of an a old boat (in a good way). We were seated in the first room (where the bar is), and as the place got busier it got quite noisy, making conversation difficult. I was eager to try Basque tapas and for the most part they were delicious. (They also have some bigger plates.) The best things were marinated mussels with piquillo puree (called Mejillon), cold zucchini soup with crab gratin, pork loin and roasted green pepper on crostini (called Solomo), and unsmoked bacon with mozzarella sandwich (called Bocata). My husband and daughter also liked a couple of asparagus dishes (one was white asparagus, one was green with a poached egg) and a roast vegetable dish. I think we had one more dish-maybe Lengua (beef tongue) but not sure. In any case we ordered too much for 3 people--it probably would have been enough to order 3 tapas and 2 larger plates to share. With 3 glasses of wine, the bill came to about $160--much more than we thought we'd spend for a tapas dinner, but we could have saved a fair amount with more reasonable ordering. The service was mixed. The waitress who took our order was friendly and helpful in deciding what to order, but other servers who brought out the plates just plopped them on the table without no interaction.

Fun dinner with friends

By jasoncrh |

I was here on Saturday night with a group of 4. I liked their take on tapas. In particular, the eggplant special and the cauliflower special were both good. We also had a special pork dish that I reallly liked and thought it was unique in depth of flavor. Service was informed and friendly, and I liked the vibe of the place. I enjoyed their cocktail menu and thought the gin drink I had to start was good, and the follow-on glasses of wine were good too. The place can get pricey quickly, and I did leave still a bit hungry. But the flavors are good and it has the right intentions. Go if you're in the neighborhood.

Do yourself a favor and eat here

By Knuckle-draggeur |

Basque cuisine par excellence, always. Great food, great service. We're regulars here and have never been disappointed. We're lucky to have this as a neighborhood joint. The same applies to their sister restaurant, El Qinto Pino, under the same ownership.

Phenomenal real-deal Basque food

By Jeff B |

Very delicious l Basque "tapas" -- is so coal the kroketas, sardina cantabrica and gildas (anchovy, Guindilla pepper and olive skewers).

Definitely worth a visit!

By JasonBrandtLewis |

Prior to coming to Manhattan, we were planning out our trip and wanted to have some pinxtos/tapas -- hoping for more authentic than "Americanized." We were NOT disappointed in Txikito. Were we magically transported back to San Sebastian? No. But did we really enjoy our pinxtos, and knew we had stumbled upon a gem? Absolutely. Highlights: the white boquerón were delicious, as were the "regular" anchovies with pickled peppers and olives. The white asparagus from Navarra were wonderful, as was the pulp (octopus). All went well with glasses of Txakoli and a final glass of Patxaran . . . One drawback: the street noise, combined with the restaurant's acoustics, can make for a noisy evening -- depending upon what room you are seated in.

Not Bad, Not Wow

By Lady911Driver |

I had read good things about Txikito, so checked it out while in NYC on business. Staff were very friendly, but the food, while tasty, did not stand out in any way. I had razor clams, which were minuscule, albondigas, not bad, which came with bread, a nice artichoke appetizer, and the croquettes. A glass of Tempranillo is always good too, but there are better tapas restaurants in NYC.

Tapas in New York

By Lapin2301 |

Tapas atmosphere with a varied and wide choice, hot or cold, of vegetables, seafood, meats, ... to be enjoyed sharing for the whole table. The quality varies with some excellent plates and others more arbitrary. Cocktails frankly very good.

Txikito Falls Short

By Edwin P |

I went to Txikito with high expectations, mainly because the other two sister properties are bonafide excellent restaurants. Txikito is owned by the same people that own Quinto Pino in Chelsea, one of my favorite (probably my favorite) tapas restaurants in NY, and La Vara, in Brooklyn. La Vara is a Michelin starred restaurant and the jewel of their crown. We arrived at the restaurant for early dinner on a Monday. The place was empty at that time, but you can tell the place has ambiance. Our first concern was the lack of friendliness of the female waitress that served us. In a city like NYC, unfriendly waiters/waitresses should be expedited into a different career by restaurant owners, thus saving them from doing something they don't enjoy. New York diners are unforgiving, there are too many choices of places to eat, and too little time to enjoy them all, and a place with unfriendly service will develop a bad reputation quickly. To clarify, she wasn't nasty or disrespectful, she just did acted like she did not want to be there. Nevertheless, she was not the reason I gave Txikito a three star. Leaving that aside, our first remark food-wise is that they use too much bread in the tapas. Many will argue that tapas have a lot to do with bread, but as someone who travels to Spain and other parts of Europe a few times per year, I will say that's not necessarily so. Casa Mono, Boqueria and Alta are just a few examples of tapas restaurants where creativeness and flavor has more to do with their tapas than bread. The boquerones were served on top of bread, the xangurro (which was a bit on the salty side) was also served on bread, the Txariboda (sausages) were served with oil-soaked bread. The blood sausage (which I'm very familiar with) lacked taste. We couldn't eat it! The Txistorra sausage was much better, but so greasy.... One thing they cook to perfection, although it doesn't have much taste is the cochinillo. Not many places can cook cochinillo to perfection, crispy skin, juicy meat, but they did, and although not too flavorful, I must give credit where it's due. As someone familiar with the high quality standards of the other two restaurants and it's owners, I was surprised and disappointed by the mediocrity of their dishes and the lack of attention. The only way I can explain this is that the couple that owns this place is definitely not visiting this venue enough. They should come around more often. I'm sure quality will improve if they do. Small wine list but very good choices.

Small and Perfect

By Victor S |

I love restaurants like this where you know a chef just fired up your fish and it comes right to your table out of the oven. It is so personal. Everything here is not only tasty, it is very creative and firmly rooted in the best Spanish tapas. The wine list is a bit limited as it is only Basque or made by a Basque winemaker, but the selections are very good nonetheless. The trout with jamon special was a standout as were the lamb meatballs. I think you can't go wrong with anything you order, throw a dart at the menu and you will be happy.

FAKE BASQUE CUISINE

By isabelacatolica |

I was very intrigued by the name, by the place and by the type of cuisine. I decided to go after having lived for 2 years in Bilbao. Service was super slow. Portions were so poor. When they say "croquetas" it means 2 "croquetas" for 5 $. I had the "pimientos del piquillo", poor and no tasty. I had the "cocinillo asado" and it was nothing special. The only good thing was the "foie gras". I was tempted to try a dessert, but then I saw a rat walking happily on the floor and I definitely decided to leave. The bill was extremely salty: 90 $ for these poor dishes. When I asked for "jamon" they replied they didn't have it. What kind of Basque restaurant is it? Never more. That's for sure. I am sad because I am living next block, and because the area needs to be revitalized. But not like this. I am very disappointed.

Gourmet fast food

By JimmyTheToucan |

Food was out of the kitchen in a flash! However it was served as ordered, cold tapas followed by warm, the main course and then dessert. Pricey but definitely worth a visit. One can taste the freshness of the produce as the dishes are earthy and uncluttered with ingredients. Wine list is interesting enough to indulge in a couple of bottles for a party of 4. Friendly & warm, from the staff to the setting.

Small, but too small

By akripa |

Basque will be the newest trend in a few months. Interesting and intriguing dishes combined with the mysterious psyche of their people. We had deviled crab and Tutera crostinis (two tiny pieces each), veal jawl terrine, and a sausage string with a glass of non descriptive white wine and a lager for about $100. It says cheap on Opentable but given the portions coming in miniature versions it is arguably rather expensive as we left hungry. The experience though was a nice exploration of something new and less trodden. As to small, so is the restaurant and you feel kind of squeezed wherever you sit. It didn’t help that they took of the entry curtain exposing us to chilly blasts until we moved tables. Had it not been for the unnecessarily arrogant lady greeting us as the maitre the staff is really friendly and helpful. Overall food quality would be 5* but the sizes and prices henceforward make it only 3*.

Ok but way far from Pays Basque quality

By Magareto |

Having been to Pays Basque, we know the quality of food and wine there. What Txikito is proposing is ok but it is not nearly close to real basque cuisine. Come on. French fries with mayo ? Seriously ? The plate Pulpo tasted (sadly) 100% as lemon zest instead of octopus. Service was ok. 300$ for 3 people with wine.

casual, fun and delicious

By ConciergeInNewYork |

As a huge fan of Spanish/Basque cuisine I was excited when this restaurant opened many years ago. I haven't been in 5 years ago but went last night and had an amazing meal. It's very casual and small but the service is experienced and warm. The pinxtos are wonderful. They offered a trout that evening that had serrano ham and it was sublime. Many other great dishes that are too numerous to mention. We can't wait to go back!

Mediocre food and service

By A C |

I suppose if you like meat-based tapas you might be happier than I was. Even then, i heard the meatballs were too salty. My dishes were medicore and super expensive for what they were. Waitress dropped dirty silverware on my leg and didn't apologize. Sangria was too sweet and watery.

Delicious

By John D |

Small bites of food is my favorite way of eating, so this place was perfect for me. It was obvious the chefs chose the freshest ingredients.

Expensive, tasty tapas

By VStraneChudes |

We had a very good time at this restaurant. While the plates are small, and not cheap, the quality and originality of the dishes was quite good, and the presentation decent. Some dishes were clearly better than others, but the overall impression was quite pleasant. Service was fine.

Everything was right

By Peter B |

Just an accidental drop-in (based on Zagat recommendation though) but definitely fully satisfactory. This is a small plates place so that’s what we did. Anchovies as good as if you were in Spain. We had to order another portion. Amazing asparagus. Nice wine list. Knowledgeable, polite and non-intrusive server who knew exactly how much presence of him was needed and provided the necessary info with charm. The most amazing almond cake. Seriously. Glad we were in the neighborhood.

Fantastic Food - tapas style

By jnez1235 |

Excellent food, small tapas plates. Good selection of wines too, and the desserts are a must-have. The location is a little different, in a kind of strip mall on 9th Ave in Chelsea north of Chelsea Market

Great Basque

By riny |

Txikito has a Basque menu - small plates/tapas + entrees. Watch for the specials and nice Spanish wines. We tried a variety of things - not a single one was disappointing - including anchovies, sardines, beet salad, ham, suckling pig (luscious), Leg of lamb/loin The service was great - very helpful. Even the desert & coffee were great.

Temple of Tapas!!!

By Anna L |

This tiny unassuming temple of tapas has become one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. The chef has this sophisticated talent of blending wonderful flavors that explode in your mouth. Some of the tapas are deliciously subtle and others are bold and flavorful! Eating there is a special delight for me and my husband! I leave with a smile on my face!

value here is based on quality, not quantity

By goodphood |

I love Txikito!!! I came here for the first time four years ago and was blown away by the simplicity and genius of the food. They also have very welcoming and knowledgeable servers, which rounds off the experience. I'm a huge Txakoli lover, so I come here to get my fix!! Best glass of sangria in town hands down, but don't overlook their wine list. It is very well curated. Staff can guide you through it if you're not too familiar with Basque wine. Their daily specials are always exciting (and much fresher!!!) versions of Basque country classics. Order their mushroom or octopus carpaccios for a visually deilghtful treat. I have been to Bilbao and Donostia, and though the pintxos were good there, they sat on the counter for hours. The difference between my "potes" experience in the Basque country and Txikito, is that Txikito does the high quality ingredients justice by serving them fresh. None of that soggy-bread nonesense. Everything tastes like it should (and that's more than I can say about many other Spanish tapas joints in the city)- fresh, nicely seasoned, simple, BASQUE! As for value, honestly, anyone who is a true food connoiseur will be happy to pay the bill here. I come here with friends often and we'll grab brunch on Sunday before hitting the Highline or the galleries. I've never paid over $40, which is very fair considering the 7 or 8 things I get to try. Their burger is famous and hard to resist, but my favorite brunch items are the eggs Al Pastor!!! GOD! THOSE ANCHOVIES!!! And try their soldadito sandwich too. It's so fun to dip it in the poached egg glass... makes me feel like a kid all over again. If you're going for dinner: Their rodaballo (turbot) is one of my favorite things to eat in NYC, not to mention the succulent perfection of their veal jowl terrine. I also love their pikillos stuffied with pisto bilbaino and served with a cod sauce. And make sure you don't miss their Bacalao al Pil Pil - the classic of classics!!!! They make a great one here!!! The flavors feel rustic, but never boring. If you consider yourself a true food lover, give it a try. it's been my favorite neighborhood joint for 4 years, so they must be doing something right!!!!! Actually, now that my mouth is watering, I might just head over there after writing this review!!!

By far the best tapas restaurant in NYC

By Luisdhm13 |

I was looking for a tapas restaurant that would remind me of Spain and a friend recommended Txikito. The service was great, from the moment we walked in we were received by the hostess with a big smile and got seated immediately. We were a little undecided about what to order so our server recommended a few dishes, we had encebollado, pulpo, setas, txistorra and the cochinillo. Everything tasted really good although many of the food was brought to our table very quick. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a tapas experience.

Wonderful Basque tapas

By Cheryl K |

We went last Friday with another couple who had just been to San Sebastian and were fans of Basque food. Patatak Mentaiko: crisp fries, spicy cod roe mayo were so addictive we ordered a second serving. Everything was amazing, the skewers of Basque anchovy, guindilla pepper, olives and the squid ribbons were delicious. The restaurant is small and noisy but the food is so good we didn't care.

3.5. Great tapas find. Most dishes are very good. Must try open-face Basque sandwich!

By Namie S |

Worst service EVER!

By CCHuey |

There’s no excuse for the rude indifferent service we received! No idea what the food is like because we barely got a drink never mind a menu. I’ve travelled all over the world, worked in the industry for years and while I’ve had bad service it’s usually been because of inexperience or overwork this was just obnoxious. I’d rate Txikito -5/10

Great basque food, not so great setting

By attillathehun |

This is a space that does not do justice to the quality of the food put out by the kitchen. The space consists of two rooms....the front room has a plain (drab?) bar with sets of small, two-person tables in the space behind it. This space is a small step above a cafeteria. The adjacent room is a bit less stark and certainly more comfortable....but only available for parties of four, or more. So the space, setting is not great. However, the food that comes out of the kitchen is great.....well, maybe the roasted pork is just very good (compared to Salinas). The pintxoak (basque canapés) are a treat ranging from marinated anchovy to homemade fois gras. The larger plates have as a base lamb, pork, squid and other fish.....but it is the preparation (Basque) that makes them standout....everything I have had has been tremendous....good enough to make dining in the front room at a tiny table seem a price worth paying.

Excellent- Feels like i discovered it- but didnt

By Anthony S |

Small, casual vasque restaurant that seems to focus a lot of its efforts around the love for eggs. Limited beer selection, yet great choices. The food is fantastic. Try the peppers (Choricero type), the eggs al pastor, the vainas, etc.. all is excellent. Not cheap, not expensive.. someplace in between. we come here regularly.

Excellent!

By He's Anonymous |

The food, service, ambiance and wine all are great! Loved the squid ribbons, beef cheeks, foie gras, basque cheesecake. Nice selection of Sherry. Must try.

Yes!

By Stacy M |

By far one of the best meals I'd had in NY to date. I'm a fan of Basque tapas; however, this place is simply amazing. Every dish we sampled, we loved; with the exception of the tongue. I'd say my favorite dish was the Desnudos. Wait to hear the specials before you decide. I'd go back for sure!

Tasty tapas but way overpriced

By SLHohen |

I have to start my review with a warning: I've eaten in some of the the best Basque pintxo bars, in Donostia-San Sebastian no less. Therefore, I was highly critical of going to Txikito in my most recent daytrip to NYC. I didn't expect to the food experience to transport me back to my times in Donostia, but I had high hopes once I looked at the menu and recognized Basque words, since the menu seemed more Basque than Catalan, or the other regions of Spain one typically finds in American tapas bars. We got there around 6p and there was already an hour wait for a table (the place is small and gets packed early). However, we lucked out with three seats right directly at the bar. We started off our dining experience with some Basque cider, or "sidreria": a low-alcohol, low-acidity drink that's perfect to clense the palate in between pintxos. The bartender poured the cider with the bottle about 5 feet away from the glass, as he should have! Kudos to him for that (and knowing what Brennivin is when he overheard us talking about Iceland). Then, the three of us split gambas plantxa (jumbo sized shrimp, head-on, seasoned with salt and olive oil), bocata (fresh bacon and melted cheese sandwich), and Cordero (roasted lamb leg with cumin, garlic, anchovy, and hot peppers). The food was good. But for three plates and three drinks, the bill came to $98. That's a little much, I think (and I'm one who's for spending $200+ for a good meal!). We saw three people devouring what looked like a lamb leg, so when we ordered the $28 lamb plate, we were expecting to be feasting on a significant piece of meat. Unfortunately, we were greeted with five small slices of lamb. Very tasty, and not game-y whatsoever, but for $28...you expect much more. The next time I'm in San Sebastian, I must tell the locals that they mustn't take their food for granted . It kept bugging my fiance and me that we could eat better pintxos in Basque Country and only spend 2-4 Euros each. But alas, Txikito is a chic NYC restaurant, and that's the price you pay for it! Go there if you're in the area and have a urge for tapas, but be prepared to spend $$$.

Great Tapas (Pinxtos) in Chelsea

By Black_Sox_Manager |

This restaurant has a youthful vibe and is located about seven blocks from Madison Square Garden. The food is really good. Every pinxto we had was superb. The portions are not big--because they're not supposed to be. The wine list is very good as well. We were two couples, and everyone was happy with their meal. I'd go back.

A fine selection of tapas for sharing. Excellent service and wine list,

By Waterloonie |

Four of us gathered for a special evening dining outside with a fine selection of tapas for sharing and a huge selection of wines mostly from Spain. Service was warm and attentive. Food was very good. Recommended.

Wonderful and inventive cuisine

By KARENSK_12 |

Loved this little super casual Basque restaurant with unusual combinations- the evening specials really were. They had roast pig that was amazing. Service was very good and helpful.

Delicious Basque

By DeliciousNewYork |

We usually share, though the portions are not big. The food is rich, and a bite or two is fine. Also, you will want to taste a variety of dishes.

Great tapas bar

By Joel N |

If you're into pork and pulpo, head on to Txikito. These items are outstanding! Just don't get their version of the sangria and stick to the cava

Interesting food, good service, fair price

By Dan S |

My wife and I really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was really interesting and expertly prepared. Yes, the plates are small and unless you're prepared to spend a lot of money, you aren't going to leave feeling stuffed, but I'm a big guy and I was hungry when I walked in and felt pretty full when I left. We ordered 6 menu items and they gave us a couple of baskets of bread, so it was enough food. The "squid ribbons" were great and we also enjoyed a little dish with red peppers. We also had a dessert with "Drunken cherries" - like a slice of pie with cherries- Very good. The place isn't much to look at from the street and the decor inside is nothing to brag about, but the food is Innovative and tasty and our server was extremely helpful and friendly. We enjoyed it. 6 plates, 2 drinks, 2 desserts, and 2 coffees cost us about $125 pre-tip...maybe a little bit high but for something different and enjoyable, it was worth it. I recommend it and would go back if we are in the area again.

Excellent Basque cuisine in Chelsea

By MK_dogdad |

Just ate here with friends and every dish we had was superb. There are numerous small plate dishes to order from, making it really easy to taste many things. Standouts included the creamy croquettes, deviled crab, marinated sardines on crostini, gratin of artichoke, a pork special and especially the fantastic trout special. As good as the food, make sure you try the house cocktails. Our favorite was the the white sangria-like, Zurrakapote, made with passion fruit. Our server was very helpful with suggestions and attentive. I highly recommend this place!

Great food but 'Chelsea gallery prices!'

By Ballykitty |

The service was wonderful. The lady waitress was knowlegdable and warm. We felt she was great at explaining the best way to order and what dishes matched. It was hard to justify the cost of the bill. I would recommend going here on a corporate card or as a guest if you don't want to have a heart attack at the bill. It's tapas! Another NY rip off.

Basque Food

By Martine A |

This is a lovely restaurant in the heart of Chelsea in New York City. Mostly small plates meant to be shared. We were three people and ordered approximately 6 plates, shrimp, potato salad, salt cod, sardines, asparagus, artichokes. Everything was well executed and very flavorful. The staff was very friendly and described each dish patiently. Great experience!!

One of our favorite Spanish joints in NY City

By dogeyedoctor |

The food here is always good. The appetizers and entrees are excellent examples of food found in Spain with an oversea's touch. The entrees are typically expensive and somewhat small in size (hence truly txikito), but we always fill up at this restaurant. Great selection of pinxtos (tapas), nice wine selection and always a gracious host. Txikito is our go-to place for spanish when we want to splurge a bit for typical Spanish food in Manhattan.

Basque in the experience...

By DRBVT |

Minimal hustle / bustle neighborhood, excellent shared plate food (olives, octopus carpaccio, tuna on toast, tiny spicy chorizo sandwiches, seasonable veggie special with cheese and a finale dense lemoncake with dollop of creme fraiche...heaven), stellar service, nice wine, relaxed atmosphere.

Fantastic experience

By BS1694 |

The food was great, and the service was even better. They have a wonderfully varied menu and you must dare to experiment. The atmosphere is hopping and the prices for what you get are reasonable.

¡Carissimo!

By Justin B |

The five star service, accompanied by the average and ridiculously overpriced (even by Manhattan standards) tapas have me at a crossroads. First off, the bartender couldn't have been more down to earth, but then my bottle of basque style cider(sidra) was $40!?! Having lived in Spain for the past year, and having my fair share of sidra, I've become accustomed to the typical restaurant beer prices for a 750 ml bottle ($3-6). So when I checked their online menu at home, stating what I assumed to be bottle prices, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was only $10. Fast forward now to the bill, the bottle was $40 and apparently it was $10 a glass...holy gringo ripoffs Batman! I was flabbergasted to say the least. I checked online to make sure I didn't order some special reserve bottle or anything, which is hilarious considering we're talking about apple cider. Sure enough, a 6 pack of 750 ml. bottles runs 8€, or about $10-12. Unbelievable! Now if we're being generous ($4 a bottle), that's a 1000% markup! Therefore I can't, with a good conscience, award anymore than 2 stars to such an open and welcoming place. It's very sad that paying black market prices for a non black market product was the hallmark of this restaurant. And don't even get me started on the wine menu or their pizza roll "version" of morcilla (blood sausage).

Lovely

By Bap_mexico |

Cozy Spanish restaurant in Chelsea. I tried a couple of their "sugerencias del dia" - (daily specialties) and they were great. Their cochinillo was crispy on the outside and extremely tender. One of the best I've ever eaten and I am a big fan of Spanish food. And the wine they suggested was very affordable and quite nice.

We felt scammed

By french_guy_in_NYC |

We had eaten at Txikito before, and enjoyed the food, and the atmosphere. Recently we won at an auction a $200 certificate for a Basque dinner of suckling pig for 4 people, and used it last night. We received 3 appetizers, 2 portions of suckling pig, and a medium salad. Our server claimed it was all that comes with this dinner. When I told him that I find it hard to believe, he went to check in the kitchen. He came back and apologized, saying that the manager is in not in, and that there was a confusion in the kitchen with another gift certificate, and brought us 2 more appetizers, but no more suckling pig. We believe they ran out of pig (even though we specified on our Opentable reservations that we would be all having it), and tried to wing it by. The food was good, but overall we felt scammed, our evening was spoiled, and we will not go back again.

Basque Food. Who Knew?

By Olliemax15 |

We go to NYC to see and do things we can't do at home. This includes trying new cuisines. Basque sounded interesting so we ventured in. It's an unpretentious casual restaurant. The appetizers are small snacky things like cod fritters, French fries w/ paprika and a delicious dip... The fish specials are not to be missed, especially the trout (deboned) with Spanish ham. We ate there twice last visit, had dinner there Friday and going back tonight. The finest, freshest ingredients, simply prepared. Be adventurous.

Hooked!

Dining at Txikito was my introduction to Basque cuisine, and I'm hooked. Every dish was beautifully presented, and was bursting with flavor. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. We let them know at the beginning of the meal that we had a concert to attend, and our server timed everything perfectly. Wine recommendations were spot on. Looking forward to returning next time I'm in NYC.

A rare longlasting find

By yaneh |

It's hard to find a restaurant in New York that has all four elements of a good experience: good service, good decor/location, ability to get a table, and actually good food. Txikito definitely hits all 4, as does its sister restaurant in Cobble Hill, La Vara. Inventive delicious dishes, which are actually large enough to share among 3 or even 4 people, and not too unreasonably priced. I come here on a regular basis and am grateful that it continues to exist.

Great small dishes, tables too small

By GilBagnell |

The food was up to the price, but the overall experience fell a little short. No question these were some nifty tapas. Octopus carpaccio was remarkable, as were several other items, and the pork trotter and tripe w chickpeas was just as it should be. However, the tables are tiny, which makes maneuvering small plates tricky. Wine list was unintelligible and way overpriced, so after the first glass I drank overpriced beer instead. We had a great waiter and did not have any problems with the service.

Not worth it

By Mari I |

The place is very cozy and the staff really nice. But even when I know tapas are small here they are extremely small. Initially I though it was just the two first tapas I order but after the third one I understand that they just serve tinny tapas. The prices were out of the roof! I am a fan of cocktails and the two I tastes were horrible. At the end I leave the place robbed and hungry.

Tasty, interesting food

By Tod B |

Very good and unusual food in a and wine, but a little pricey. Small plates allow you to sample a lot of different tastes.

Very Good Lamb Meatballs in Minted Broth

By Harvey M |

The restaurant is broken up into two rooms, probably as a result of expansion. The room where you enter has a lot of tables for two. At this Basque tapas restaurant I started off with the gratin of artichoke ($7) which was good, but not something that I would order again on a repeat visit. After that I had the delicious lamb meatballs in minted broth (see picture) for $12. My last course ($16) was squid ribbons a la plantxa with sweet onion and pine nuts (see photo), which was again delicious. I regretted that I didn't have any more room left for something else. During these cold days, it's nice to know that this is not a restaurant that you would feel a chill every time the door opened

excellent, flavorful plates

By Roger R |

Loved their sister restaurant in Brooklyn (La Vara), so tried this Manhattan site. Very pleasant downscale decor, not noisy. nice service. Small and medium-sized plates all with outstanding flavor. Limited liquor (gin, vodka, rum); great wines. $178 for 2 people with drinks and good tip.

Great place

By inc1972 |

It exceded our expectations, I will definitely go back and try the rest of the food I could not eat this time

Great tapas, no room

By Nefelokokigia |

Some of the best tapas in town, though the place is packed early, and all night, so don't expect comfort. Go early, like before 7pm. The food is inventive and delicious. Great wine service, too.

Drinks with Daugther

Very cozy and quaint little place , bar was very nice good cocktail, the tapas were vey good and plentiful. Good ingredients and very nicely served. The atmosphere very classic Vasca and colorful. Friendly environment and service.

Good basque cuisine!

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. We ended up sharing several small plates. The tapas were good and we had some very good wines. The lady who served us was charming, patient, and quite helpful.

Leave Your Appetite, but not Your Wallet, at Home

This was our second attempt at TXIKITO, having dined there a few years ago. We'd forgotten why we'd not returned sooner; had we not been hungry and in the hood, we'd have been wise to search for something less pricey, with portions more generous. Clearly, the restaurant has endured, though it is showing signs of wear around the edges––a general feeling of malaise among staff. Our wait person was engaged enough, and made suggestions from the menu for drink and fare. However, the portions are disappointingly stingy for the price-point, and honestly, nothing is special here. Precious cocktails, lacking a noticeable level of alcohol. Rubbery, slimy mushrooms with a couple slices of dryish bread; artichoke spread on two teensy pieces of toasted baguette; a few small pieces of eggplant in an unremarkable sauce; and then the SPECIALS: a few miserly flecks of "local Albacore" in a mixture of veggies, shockingly expensive; and the equivalent of half a tomato (nothing heirloom here) sliced, and served with "tomato mayo" –– really? These five dishes barely made an appetizer for us; in truth, we'd been informed by the wait person that portions were small, and most people order 4-5 dishes per person. As it was, with 2 drinks and 5 dishes, we were each set back $80--outrageous! We left and went home to scrounge up the rest of a meal. ¡Adios, TXIKITO!

fantastic food, incredible service

By luv2travel49463 |

we had a wonderful evening with close friends while visiting NY a few weeks ago! we had the restaurant recommended to us by some friends in Raleigh, NC where we live. It exceeded our expectations. the food was incredible! their version of sangria (can't remember what they called it) was very unique and delicious. and the staff...can't say enough about them! My husband and I were celebrating our 15th anniversary and they made it very special! we were able to meet one of the owners who was dining with his family that evening and he was very friendly. and the food again, was fantastic-- unique dishes that were delectable!

Pseudo Tapas

By DrAM27 |

For those who know their tapas should give this place a miss. No ambience. Their interpretation of traditional tapas was terrible and overpriced. Jamon serano servedin a tiny portion for a ridiculous price. Dont go there if you have an appetite. Overpriced.

Worth eating here

By arubalad |

Restaurant on a Friday night was busy, a reservation would make sense if you wanted assurance for a table Prices are reasonable and you cahave a series of small dishes or a regular meal. The roast suckling pork was as good as you could want. The fish dishes were also good but not as good as the pork. Prices are reasonable and the service both friendly and efficent. Definitely worth eating here

Apalling

By dartchic06 |

I was absolutely appalled by my dining experience at Txikito. The food and service were average; what stunned me was the complete inattention from both our waitress and the manager when we spotted a mouse running up the wall a few feet behind our table (the wall separated the kitchen from the dining area). We had already asked for the check when we spotted the mouse; instead of receiving an apology of any sort, we received a plain "okay" and were brought the check at the bar (where we rushed to upon seeing the mouse near us). We were told that the manager was on his way to talk to us but after waiting a bit and him/her not turning up, we decided to leave. Separately, we found the menu expensive for the portions of food. Two pieces of tapas per plate. The quality was average, and we ended up going to different restaurant for a second dinner down the road. Would not recommend this place. Unless you are looking for mouse poisoning, that is.

Very nice neighborhood joint

Fantastic Basque small plates. Just about everything we had was great. The blood sausage was a little flavorless, but still good. Great service. Very enjoyable place if you're in the neighborhood.

They changed waiters

By acalicocat |

Our friends had made the reservation and as always I am very happy to follow any prearranged reservations by this couple ,they have great taste. We arrived first and on entering the restaurant I thought that this was not up to there usual standards of chic. The waiter arrived and from that moment on I understood why they had chosen this restaurant. He was knowledgeable and helpful. My vodka and tonic ,only one choice of vodka, was 8 out of ten. Our friends arrived and the more than friendly waiter explained that this was a Basque restaurant and that we should order family style and that the dishes were, small and could be shared. Everything was d,delicious. Lamb, pork, meatballs ,beet salad, peppers, the sauce on the meat balls was so wonderful that my friends wife obtained a spoon to scrape the dish clean. A young lady took over our table and was exceptionally helpful with bringing two wonderful deserts ,an almond cake and a cherry concoction which was equally great. Coffee , very happy . Do not be put off by the simple decor, the old adage springs to mind"do not judge a book by its cover." This was a great evening except for the noisy four top next to us. Why do certain people feel the need to shout there pointless stories and opinions loud enough so that the whole restaurant can hear?

Loved it; good food, good service

By morl8tr |

Basque tapas place. The servers were friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. The beer was good, and so were the cocktails. It's also a relatively quiet place -- you can actually have a conversation there. Not cheap, but hey, this is New York.

tasty beyond belief

By doreenandneil |

Txikito is one of the best share plate restaurants we have been to; an amazing array of flavors. Let the server suggest the choices, but do ask about prices for some of the suggestions. Our pork plate was twice the cost of most plates, however we agreed it was very, very good. It's easy to eat a lot here and so be mindful of the upcoming bill for the food. A reservation is recommended

Excellent service and tasty northern Spain tapas

By Mywinetutor |

We really liked this place but why do the "daily specials" usually mean most expensive? I won't go through the list of everything we enjoyed because three of us shared seven different dishes and enjoyed almost all of them. Prices ranged from about $7 to $20 but for some reason the special "Huevo casero" (squash, cheese and egg) was very bland and expensive ($19). Service was great but I noticed the next day I was charged for a second glass of wine I never received. Shame on me (and Carlos) for not checking more closely.

Dinner was authentic and delicious

By Renee C |

Good service, good food and authentic cuisine. Comfortable atmosphere. Particularly enjoyed the freshness of ingredients. I'd eat here again.

Just ask!

The server gave us wonderful advice on what to sample. I thought the tongue was exceptional. Two others at the table really liked the tripe. For those who are not adventurous eaters, fear not, you will have wonderful food.

Suckling Pig, Encebollado & Kroketas to make your mouth water!

By BrissleGirl66 |

Have visited twice. The first time before the Queen concert this past Summer.Hard to find delicious food near MSG so of course hit Trip Advisor and found this gem. When I first saw menu and saw kroketas I figured my kids would be fine with tons of those for dinner if nothing else appealed to them. Well we ate more than just the kroketas. The special was a steak the size of your head. The russian potato salad with so flavorful and not what we expected. We all shared each dish. The fries were thin and perfect. The salads were so fresh and tasty. The second time I went was a business dinner with staff from the UK. I was nervous watching them as they looked at the menu, but they all claimed it was some of the best food they had ever had. The squid noodles (Txipiron "Encebollado") um so good we ordered it twice, the suckling pig is just as you imagine it would be. Our server was super knowledgeable and did not steer us wrong! I cannot wait to return.

Excellent sophisticated Basque cuisine

By Alessandra B |

We visited this restaurant for an early dinner after a very long trip. We did not wanted to adventure too far from the hotel and searched for a good non-traditional restaurant. We found Txikito Cocina Vasca....a jewel! Txikito serves basque dishes with an elegant and sophisticated twist. The menu consists on small tapa-like dishes and medium size dishes. The waiter will inform you about the day specialties and will suggest an appropriate wine if you so wish. We ordered several small dishes from which the Carpacio de Pulpo and the anchovies bites are memorable. Furthermore, the eggplant was very good and the suggested main dish, trucha con jamon serrano , was fabulous! To drink the suggested Basque white wine...slightly sparkling , very fresh was very appropriate for the food we had ordered. All in all a wonderful experience.

A Wonderful Place to Chat and Savor

By FoxAndEgg |

Txikito is a really fun restaurant on a lot of levels. It's a cozy, tiny place that offers an atmosphere that is at once boisterous and intimate. The Basque-inspired menu features expertly executed small plates that inspire conversation, and a well-considered wine list keeps the chatter lively late into the night. The menu is creative, presentations are solid, and it's a comfortable place to stay awhile and laugh with loved ones. This is a good pick if you want a meal that is memorable without unnecessary pomp and circumstance.

Everythind was Delicious!

Everything from the Sangria to the dessert was lovely! They don't accept reservations, so come early. The restaurant is small but fun atomosphere> I will be sure to be back!

Excellent Tapas Choice

By Didojen |

The portions are small and some get quite expensive but this is still a great place for Tapas. Great for a group of friends! It is a small space and very blandly decorated but the food and service was incredible. Order off the specials menu. The dishes we ordered off the main menu were good but the specials were even better. Desserts were also delicious! We had a large group and were able to taste a lot of the dishes and not one disappointed. Expect to pay $100 pp to leave with a full belly.

Small good plates - but maybe a bit too small?

By cootmom |

Delicious food, especially the seafood, just perfectly salty goodness. The server was excellent and made some perfect wine recommendations. The tables for two, in the same room with the bar, are set close together in the rear of the restaurant, with no nearby window. The space is nicely decorated. The room holding larger table is nicer, and of course, with tapas, the more people, the more choices and the more pleasure in sharing! All in all, though, I liked Socarrat Paella Bar, on W 19th, better. The portions just seemed bigger. I don't think that small plates should be an excuse for undersized portions.

SMALL but good!

By Karamelized1 |

Excellent food but very tight quarters, not for handicapped.... Shame, because the food is excellent. In spite of being "typically" spanish, some elements are misnamed, e.g. chistorra is not chorizo. Nonetheless, well worth the try.

The real deal on Basque

By patentesquire |

Ok this is tapas, Basque style. So you can expect great octopus (which it was), you can expect not so great wine (Granache) (which it wasn't so great), you can expect small portion sizes (which they definitely were), and you can expect to pay a lot of money (which thankfully my host paid & glad I did not). Overall other reviews are more or less accurate. The food quality was great, but the quantity was tiny. You have to order a LOT of this stuff to get a meal, so you either will spend a reasonable amount and be hungry, or you will spend an exorbitantly large amount and be full. My suggestion is to go on expense account unless you are super wealthy. I am not surprised, as I expected this from this type of food. But again how many of these exact cuisines are available in NYC? Not many, so they cornered a market.

Terrible Experience

By GoBlueTraveler |

The food here is pretty good, thoughtfully prepared. The ambiance is okay, tables are small and the interior is very plain. I asked the waiter for recommendations. I said that I wanted to try something very authentic. Evidently you shouldn't ask for help in this restaurant. The waiter, who I learned was from San Sebastián, Spain, got right in my face, uncomfortably close and basically chewed me out. He said that all the dishes were authentic because they had names in Basque. That if I had been in Spain I would know what all these dishes were. Anyway, this went on for a minute or so then he stomped off. I was so shocked that I got tears in my eyes. This same waiter then stood near the bar and laughed and chatted with the bartender. So, I doubt that it was just "a bad day." For the rest of the meal a different waiter brought my food and a waitress picked up my dishes. Their demeanor was cold but at least it was civil. Don't go to this restaurant. There are many other Spanish places in NYC with good food that are friendly and welcoming.

Not impressed

By KelCJAX |

Normally trip advisor reviews are spot on for me, but this place was a bust. We tried 5 different tapas, and all of them were nothing special. One that I specifically remember was a mushroom grilled cheese that was pretty much just breading. It had no flavor what so ever. The atmosphere was nice, but that is the only part that I enjoyed. The service was borderline snooty, and the prices were high for only average food at best. There are so many amazing places to eat in New York, don't go here.

Sucking pig in tximitxurri!

By wobbs1 |

My wife and I were very happy to have tasty Basque pintxos here, the best I've had this side of Donostia. Yes, this is New York an the prices are a bit steep, but the quality is there. You can choose between very small plates, mid-sized plates, and full entrees ... all to share. The suckling pig was the best. There is an adequate selection of mid-priced wines (particularly from Rioja). Very simple decor with friendly service. A neighborhood restaurant that I would visit often if it were in my neighborhood.
