Overpriced, tasteless “Italian” food

By antoniettap05 |

Walking down Mulberry street we were stopped by a gentleman outside who convinced us to dine there for “free drinks.” Even though I know better NOT to go into a restaurant where people approach you, I unfortunately fell into the trap this time as I was with the kids and they were hungry and tired of walking all day. We had an appetizer, and a pasta dish each. Our bill came out to $170 US!!! This is pricey and I will say, being Italian, we were NOT impressed at all. I make way better pasta at home for a fraction the price. I wouldn’t mind paying for delicious food, but this restaurant was far from that. Way overrated and overpriced…. only well known because of what happened there years ago. Would not recommend and will not go back. Lesson learned, do not get suckered into going to eat there by the fellow on the street convincing you you’ll get free drinks. At that price, those 2 drinks were included in the high price!

Unimpressed...we were served warm water and had to wait for that. The food was meh at best and won’t ever be coming back.

Tried a scam then got aggressive

By BR00KIE |

We were recommended this restaurant so headed straight for it when we arrived in little Italy. On arrival we were greeted with the offer of a table outside and free wine or sangria. We accepted and sat down. The waiter then asked if we'd like wine or sangria, so we ordered. We then ordered food and ate pleasantly in the sun. Whilst eating the same offer of free wine or sangria was being made to every passer by. Once finished and presented with the bill it included wine and sangria. We complained to be told we'd ordered the wrong wine / sangria. The waiter then said he'd told us what was and wasn't free, this was a lie. Anyway we argued for a while and then the waiter started to get aggressive. A bit more shouting and getting other staff involved eventually the bill was taken away. On its return it included 2 of the 4 drinks. At this point I decided to have no more conversation regarding the bill and crossed out the wine and the tip and paid the difference. Please don't eat here. If you do then be careful of the scam.

BEST PASTA, AN ICON IN LITTLE ITALY

By jane w |

This restaurant has been around for many years. They have changed their location but are alive and well! Had the best pasta primavera, and my husband had creamy and delicious fettuccine alfredo. They have a varied and wonderful menu including all your favorite traditional Italian dishes, as well as seafood. The owners and staff are very warm and inviting. Very good service and reasonable prices.

Good food, rubbish service!

By SomersetJoppie |

My daughter and I visited Umberto's Clam House about a fortnight ago for Saturday lunch. We were shown to a table immediately and asked what we wanted to drink. The wine was brought quickly as was the menu. The order was taken straight away and that was virtually the end of the service. We asked several times where our meals were. The waiters (there were several!) we asked went off muttering about seeing where the food was but none of them came back to say where it was up to. We must have waited nearly an hour and had finished the bottle of wine. We are still waiting for the bread which they brought to everyone else's table! We have decided we had such poor service because we were two women rather than a mixed party. However, the food when it eventually came, was good. We were so upset by the poor service we deducted half the tip they had added to the bill (as they do in New York) and told the waiter it was because of his rubbish service. We definitely won't be visiting again.

The host at the door acts like a biggest candidate of biggest crap in the NYC so far.

There is an ignorant and rude host in front of the restaurant. You cannot believe such people and restaurants still exist.

Groupon

By Lolly’s Look |

We love Little Italy and have our favorite spots there. We have eaten at Umbertos when I was at it's previous location so I'd been awhile. We found and bought a very good deal with Groupon for a Monday night dinner. It included 4 appetizers, 4 entrees, 4wines and 4 desserts. The price was fantastic. The food was not bad. They did not have any eggplant so two items we wanted from the appetizer menu were not available. We ordered a Cesar salad--typical, baked clams--that were too large and tough, mozzarella en corraza

Highly recommend

Had jury duty- walked along Mulberry Street & decided to have lunch here. Great decision. Excellent lunch special in a nice atmosphere with good service.

Cute restaurant on Mulberry Street

Good Service. Relaxing and quiet. I had the Lasagna and it was excellent. A nice spot for lunch if you are out exploring the neighborhood.

Love little Italy

By Barbara C |

The food was good and the location was perfect. We had purchased a Groupon and when we were greeted and said we had a reservation they told us we couldn't be seated outside because of our Groupon. It was a beautiful night so I questioned that because it felt like they were punishing us because of the Groupon. We were ultimately seated in a better place and had a good experience.

Awesome

We were no planning to dine here but at the last minute my daughters and I decided to one Thursday night late. We were visiting New York for a girls day and this was the topper on our day. It was cozy, friendly and incredibly delicious. I can’t wait to go back there again.

This place was delicious!

By Jan L |

This was in Little Italy and a guy was standing outside saying free wine with your lunch. So we went in and had incredible delicious food. I had Chicken Piccata and it was to die for. You only get 1 free glass of a wine spritzer though. It was expensive but by far the best meal we had in NYC. We were traveling with our kids and grandkids and they even loved their pasta with plain butter on it.

sucked in by groupon deal

By Boardingpass123 |

When it sounds too good to be true- run the other way. We were in NYC to celebrate my sister's birthday and turned it into a girls weekend away. We saw the groupon for dinner for 4 and bought it. The service was HORRIBLE! the waiter was a jerk. Absolutely rude and grumpy. Could barley mumble words out of his mouth. We told him it was my sister's birthday and he could have cared less. We were hoping for a fun evening to celebrate and this place ruined it. The place is dirty. My side plate had caked on food. The food was underwhelming at best. This is NOT authentic Italian food. We had amazing seafood the night before in a PUB for crying out loud! DO NOT waste your money here. There are far far better places in Little Italy and I wish we would have kept walking. Also our waiter had a terrible time calculating how much we owed on top of our already paid for groupon. he could not talk and apparently could not add!

Family fun at Umbertos

By paulieboy519 |

My family and l had an awesome time , we loved the food we ate , we loved that it was a homey atmosphere, Rodrigo was our server he was extremely courteous, and Tommy the nose (Manager) was accommodating. I highly recommend anyone looking for great food and service to go to Umbertos Clam House.

Cute lunch in little italy!

By royadestroyaa |

What drew us in was the offer of free sangria with our lunch, I assume a special something for mother's day ;) The food was really tasty and the portions were big, the lunch special menu had lots to choose from, and for a good price. Highly recommended! The waiters also had lots of character and there is a nice spot to sit outside, as you should in little Italy.

Giving it under 5 stars means no taste buds and have no Idea about fine Food.

By George C |

Been going to Umberto's for a few years now and everything my wife and I have tried has always be so delicious from the pasta dishes to the gnocchi and the deserts. the wait staff are awesome and treat their guests as family.

Truly Dissapointed

By Juan G |

My wife and I went on Saturday, July 7, 2018 and had dinner. We had on previous occasions eaten here but on this date everything was wrong. I ordered the lasagna dinner and when my order came, the lasagna was about 1/3 of the small oval casserole it came in. When I complained to the bus boy, he said he could not do anything about it, but he told the waiter. The Waiter came by and after I spoke to him, he said he is sorry but that is how it comes. I told him I have been to this restaurant on several occasions and this is not the way it has been served before. I asked for the manager, but instead the waiter came back saying he was ordering another lasagna for me. The other lasagna was all pasta and cheese and no meat. After paying the bill, another waiter, who I had no previous interaction with, came by and laughing asked me if I had gotten the other half of my lasagna order. I responded by telling him I am glad I am the center of the days joke and how unprofessional he is by asking such a stupid question. I don't know if they thought I was a tourist and wasn't going to say anything, but either way not the manner to speak to a customer who you just tried to rip off. By the way, the "free Sangria taste like fruit punch and the free wine taste like a $2 bottle of wine." Restaurant was empty inside and poor inside service.

Great Food

By JimJenkins5 |

We came in because I love Seafood Marechiaro. It was better than I expected. My wife, not a seafood lover, ordered the Eggplant Parmesan. We were not disappointed. The wait was about 20 min but the complimentary wine made it go fast. We ordered oysters as an appetizer, the freshest in the city.

Friendly and Food was Great

As we strolled through Little Italy in New York we were checked no out the restaurants. When we passed by Umberto's there was gentleman out front greeting people that were walking by. As All of the restaurants down there do. He caught our eye because he wasn't pushy and pretty much was just offering us a good meal. We walked a bit down the street then decided to go back there. When we did he again greeted us pleasantly and walked us to our table. When our waiter showed up he said whatever we were drinking was on him. Well, gotta say I didn't mind that at all. Meal was very good, one of us had the Cheese Ravioli, one had baked ziti and the other had linguini in garlic and olive oil. They also served complimentary bread with the meal.

Very good value for money

By ssand |

Menu at 16.95 , otherwise a la carte a little more expensive . traditional Italian cuisine, very good. Very nice waiter.restaurant very clean, I recommend 100% . Fast service.

My best restaurant meal ever.

By Emma W |

I highly recommend. Just read some bad reviews. We love Italian food and I would go as far as saying this was my favourite meal, above any restaurant I’ve been before. Service was nice. I had drunken clams and lobster Diablo. I thoroughly enjoyed. Making my mouth water just thinking of it. There was 5 of us and everyone enjoyed their meals. Garlic bread was beautiful also.

Authentic and beautiful

By Antoinne C |

I booked for the Mrs and I, due to the places history and reviews. Was a little apprehensive when we arrived and it was empty (later found out that all restaurants in Little Italy were empty that night). I need not fret, the service, food and wine was exceptional - really made our visit to NYC special. Top quality cuisine, lovely ambiance and probably the best Italian food outside Italy 🇮🇹

Fun and Yummy Lunch

By JimboMalibu_CA |

We were looking for a spot to get pizza in Little Italy and this fellow in long fur coat beckons us in with free wine. We fell for it but glad we did. We had the hot appetizer plate to start and two pizzas to follow with more wine. A tasty and very filling lunch for 4 plus some pizza to take home. It is a classic Italian eatery with reasonable prices.

Great Food

By SuzyC1982 |

Tempted in by the offer of 'free wine' we took a seat outside and spent the afternoon eating, drinking and people watching. All good. If you're positioned right you also get views the the Empire State Building.

Fantastic place! Food was amazing, service was excellent! Very clean! Tommy the Nose, love him! If you are in Little Italy you have to eat here!

Eh Not worth a return visit

By Dee |

I went here with some friends. We were lured by the man offering free wine with our meal. The bread and dipping oil was delicious but once it was gone, there was no offer of more. Had to ask for refills on all of our waters. The meal was good. No one came to inquire if everything was okay. We all left a decent amount on our plates and no one ever questioned if there was anything wrong. I might have come back for the food but not with the service.

Mexican Italian

Lovely lunch. Skillfully up sold but it's ok. My mussels were just right and the lobster ravioli did not have a lot of identifiable lobster bits but taste really good. Wine reasonably priced.

Great food, location and entertaining

By BernieCassie |

My mom and I visited New York City first week of July. We decided to Groupon as much as possible. We chose Umberto's Clam House for our first night. Right in the heart of Little Italy New York City! We decided to eat indoor by the open window instead of the patio. First thing we noticed that it is on a very busy street so a quiet dinner it is not. But if you like to people watch it is perfect. I started with deep fried callimari and my mother started with a brochetta with a soft cheese (ricotta or mascapone..don't remember which one) and roasted eggplant drizzeled with reduced balsamic vinegar, both very good. My mom had the special, fettuccine with sundries tomatoes, salmon and spinach in a creamy white sauce. I had the Seafood Marechiaro. A tomato based seafood ( clams, muscles, callimari and shrimp) sauce with fettuccine noodles. Both were very good. We both chose wine. I had the house white and my mom had the house red. Both also good. We were so stuffed, we declined the dessert. All of this was included in the Groupon we purchased. As alot of restaurants in New York City, they have someone outside trying to get people to dine in their restaurant. I did not get the gentleman' s name, but he was very entertaining to watch and listen. He would sing older Blue Eyes ( Frank Sinatra) songs as part of his lure. The server was also very attentive and helpful. Would definitely return when we are back in New York City. Would also recommend.

Decent food but overpriced and targeting tourists

By lachkeira |

Like Lygon Street in Melbourne (Italian district), Little Italy in NYC has the spruikers outside encouraging you to dine at their restaurant and not one of the numerous competitors lining the street. I always find this off putting, but this night wasn't my choice of restaurant and once they knew that they left me alone. This restaurant won bragging rights and got us in the door, primarily because of their free drink (wine, sangria or soft drink) and free bread and oil/vinegar. So for a family of 5, only having to pay for the main meal seemed reasonable. The food was ok, not bad, but nothing amazing, and yet the experience still managed to cost us over AU$200. This is partly because everywhere EXCLUDES the state tax, but then the restaurant also ADDED an 18% gratuity. Considering the lack of amazing service, the ok food, we thought this was excessive, but not being confident tourists we ended up paying it. We learnt later that we should have raised it with the restaurant and advised what we considered a reasonable tip. It felt to me that the restaurant trades on the tourists and takes advantage of the ambiguity around tipping and slaps tourists with higher than expected and due gratuity. So if you're not happy, question it. We did elsewhere!

First of all, look at the photos I attach The man from outside addresses us saying how exquisite everything is And that with his menu we will eat like in Italy, and that he gives us sangria (The first ..) gives us the menu and they do not have a menu ... nos, we are served water without ask for anything, we ate and the dishes are around $ 15, the amounts are disappointing .. the tip you put directly 20%, do not give you the option to give less and above if you see the ticket .. they suggest it again .. Check the water's PVP 8$

Good Food, Service Lacking, A Bit Pricey

By Dan C |

We were looking for a place for lunch in Little Italy and this place had been recommended by a friend. A gentleman on the sidewalk promised us free wine if we came in for lunch and pointed to a $12.95 entree on the menu. We really didn't take time to examine the menu, but most of the entrees were well above $12.95. We found the prices steep for what we received. It took quite a while for someone to wait on us, and even longer for the food to arrive. Thankfully the bread and salad didn't take so long. The pizza, lasagne and gnocchi we had were good but not outstanding. The tiramisu was also good but not the best we'd ever had. With so many places to choose from, we'd probably try somewhere else next time. Clearly seafood is the specialty of the house, and if that's what you're looking for, you might really love this place. A highlight of our meal (?) was when the man who directed us in off the sidewalk broke out into a loud rendition of "New York, New York". Entertaining. I will just sum it all up by saying the experience was unique.

Hey, Tommy!?! You Hungry?

By WWF4G |

Just walk down Mulberry street and you can't help coming across an Italian restaurant every 10 or 30 feet with a host outside encouraging you to sit and eat at their restaurant. Whether it's Tommy or Johnny you honestly can't go wrong because just about every place is busy. We elected to eat at Umberto's because of the seafood Italian theme. We started with the bruschetta as a light appetizer and had main entrees of Fettuccine Alfredo and Linguine and clam sauce. Both dishes were amazing and had great flavor. I would suggest sitting outside to enjoy the nice weather and to watch Tommy work his magic and he looks for the next customer or when he talks to Johnny next door. Tommy was the reason why we came back to Umberto's after passing it. He paid attention and remembered us the first time we walked by. I highly encourage anyone to experience Umberto's Clam House.

Worst Experience

By Goulet313 |

Went there as part of a girls weekend. First of all the place is dirty, bathroom is disgusting. We ordered drinks.. The were served in plastic cups and I had to remind the server about my drink 4 times.... It arrived after my friends had finished their meals. I ordered Lobster ravioli, I was given cheese. My correct meal arrived after my friends plates had been removed . The bread was nothing special and the parm cheese was not real. The place was loud and manager was rude.

Amazing

By Horacio N |

The host outside is amazing, sing very well i recorded him, the food was really good, it's not too expensive, but it's not cheaper, my friend and i felt like in italy, also the sangria was vwry delicious i recommend this place to take a lunch

Hunger is When you trotzdem eat

By ronny89889 |

The waiter catched us with The words „hey guys! Dinner! Outside table! Free Alkohol! Wine or Sangria for The one! Are you Hungry?“ He was a stupid guy who always Said these words to Every Potential guest. The Pizza was very Bad. No Taste! The gratis wine tasted like water and sulfit. The gratis tasted like Leitungswasser! Price was toooo damn high! Its The last shitplace under The Shitplaces! Rather eat your own Hand than there!

AVoid the rip off

By MaryAnn S |

Awful - this place sells pizza on a cardboard tortilla she'll- a disgrace to the actual Italian and NYC. Took over an hour to get our food. He the only guy out in the walkway coaxing people in- we should have know better.

Little Italy is opens and that means Clams

By Danny |

So mulberry street is full of history and tourist fulfillment centers...anyone that knows the city knows Umberto’s . I worked in New York and travel back often. If I am downtown and am really ready to eat I go back to Umberto's. Fresh shucked chilled clams, and the famous Umberto’s Baked Clams…. Seafood salad with fresh garlic olive oil and seasoned the right way. Black linguine and then some veal. Best of all are the waiters who have been there forever and know how to be attentive and knowledgeable. I love Jesse the bartender, Tommy the Nose at the door, and the food... Go and enjoy yourself with confidence.

The best in little Italy!

By Food meister |

Hands down the best in little Italy, I have been there many times and I never had one complaint! You must eat your way through the menu..

Good restaurant in the sadly ever-shrinking Little Italy district in New York

By RebelKebbell |

Had deep fried mozzarella as starters - portion was huge so I took the leftovers to take away. I then had a classic Italian dish for mains: spaghetti and meatballs in a tomato sauce. I had a lovely Chianti with the meal. The best was kept til last though: the Canoli was to die for. Totes amazeballs! I had to be rolled home afterwards though :)

Quite lovely!

By beebahk |

Dinner there with a Groupon deal. The service was erratic -- probably understaffed. The waiter tried his best! The food -- depends on what one orders, I suppose. The stuffed artichoke was quite good, but the stuffed clams were so-so. The chicken scarpariello was not what I expected, and the chicken masala was a bit too salty. The white wine was actually good! Desserts (oreo-crumps cheesecake and chocolate cake) were very good. I may go back if the opportunity presents itself.

Best ever clam dish!

By Janeto735 |

I had read about this place in a guide book so was curious to make a visit. I chose the house special clam dish and it was amazing - so full of flavour! Interesting art work in the wall too.

Outside dining on a perfect summer day

By Kyra Minichan |

We were coerced by Tommy the Nose to try Umberto's and offered free wine and sangria. Who can say no to that? The food and staff were excellent and it is the perfect spot to sit outside in Little Italy and watch all of the people walk up and down the streets. Memories were made!

DINNER AND A SHOW

By CTS_Knows |

I have eaten in over 16 different "Little Italy" restaurants over the years. Some good some bad, some expensive and some not. A few weeks before our vacation I spotted a Groupon for this spot for $47. Two apps, two wines, two dinners and two desserts. How can you go wrong? We had drinks and coffee and that was extra but that and the tax was all we were charged. I don't know what the complaints in some of the reviews are about. We sat outside because the weather was great. We enjoyed the show of watching Tommy try to entice tourists to dine here rather then the other 50 spots on the strip that is Mulberry Street. This is also a common art done on South Beach. Our waiter was friendly and gave us plenty of time to relax and enjoy drinks before ordering. Every bite of food we had was wonderful! The service remained good and we really enjoyed ourselves. This would definitely be a place I would recommend.

Excellent clams and spaghetti!

By Jill Myers E |

We dropped in for a late lunch while in NYC for leisure. Staff was super friendly and engaging but not pushy. Food is just excellent and portions are large. Atmosphere was quiet when we were there but it was not crowded at that hour. It’s a short walk to Chinatown, so we shopped Canal Street after we ate. Fun afternoon. We will be back!

Underwhelming at best

By laceylouise |

There are so many excellent restaurants on Mulberry Street but we wanted to try Umbertos. I really didn't understand why my fettuccine Alfredo was served before my Caesar salad and my appetizer. Although the Alfredo was very good, I sent my salad back because the dressing tasted sweet for some reason. Although my stuffed mushroom appetizer tasted good it was served last. Not somewhere that I could recommend at all, especially given all of the other amazing choices in the area.

Awesome

Great location. So per friendly service. And outstanding food quality at fair prices. Will come again. Thanks

We Loved Umberto's!

By Sheila F |

While strolling through "Little Italy" we came to Umberto's and it were greeted outside by a wonderful gentleman who invited us inside and promised we would enjoy the food. When we went inside l was so thrilled to see the warm cozy atmosphere of a New York Italian restaurant like I've seen in movies. The lighting was low (with Christmas lights) and the atmosphere was exactly what l wanted to experience in New York. The food was excellent and the staff were true Italian gentlemen! I highly recommend Umberto's if you want that authentic New York Italian restaurant experience.

Quick Lunch on a Saturday

By KingofMorgantown |

We were strolling through little Italy when we got pulled in to have a lunch at this little spot. Very quaint and the two guys working there were nice. I had the Ziti and a couple Sangrias. Perfecto!

The food is definitely good

By Corine V |

The service was appropriately given to us. The meals that we ordered arrived promptly yet it didnt disappoint our palates. The meal prices are very reasonable for a Soho little italy location.

Definetly not worth the money. Very disappointing service too.

By ebbiee94 |

We went here on Christmas eve me and my partner. My partner had a seafood pasta dish which looked fabulous, certain elements of the dish were very good. The lobster was great but the clams and the mussels were not washed correctly they were full of sand and really gritty. When I complained to the waitess she argued back not even a sorry or is there anything we can do. We received the bill for $122 this is with a 20% service charge. We only had one red glass of wine, a lemonade, chicken parma and my partners seafood dish. The service was absolutely disgraceful and most certainly not somewhere I would recommend or most certainly visit again. Considering we were the only people in the restaurant we were ignored and pushed to the side. The service in new york in other restaurants is absolutely above and beyond especially when you are paying huge tips.

San Gennaro Feast September 2019

By Linda E |

We were walking around the feast this year in Little Italy and decided to go sit and dine at Umberto's Clam House. I had fried shrimp and spaghetti alla oilio - it was delicious. My husband had fried calamari & said it was great.

Great lunch in Little Italy

By bisrdhazrd |

My brother swears by Umberto's lasagne. He dragged me there and I must admit, it was way better than "the place in midtown that's Sinatra's favorite" and nearly twice the price. The bread was fresh Italian bread, the service was quick and friendly. The lobster ravioli was creamy and delicious. The host will sing Sinatra if you ask him! It's not the fanciest of places but I would def return!

My Pal Tommy the Nose !!

By Tony Cirillo |

Tommy is a great host of Umbertos for years. He does the original Umberto Ianniello justice big time!! Beautiful spot amazing food and Sangria . Also great Chianti w the Tommy the Nose discounts. Romantic and also very fun. Tommy knew my uncles from bklyn well and always treats me and my gf properly. He is a gentleman and a brilliant man who is trilingual ! He is GREAT energy to be around and makes the dining experience very fun. Gotta love Umbertos . I’m an ole soul for 29. But Umbertos is a MUST if you waltz thruu Little Italy otherwise you didn’t do little Italy correctly . Go enjoy some vino and good baked clams. - tony C !

Dinner with Friends

By Esra B |

We met old friends in Little Italy, and walked in to Umberto's. The food was nothing special, and expensive. First drinks on the house.

Very poor food

By kierenstarr |

Had 2 pizzas both of a very poor quality and burnt then no bill just a very quick woo of the card without seeing anything and the only option being an e mail copy when I received it 20% service added without authorisation for a poor quality meal.

Great little find in Little Italy!

By Gheades |

The promise of free wine with our meal was enough to draw us in - yes shameless I know - and we were sure we would regret it but boy were we wrong. Inside is typical of any Italian restaurant anywhere and you could have been anywhere but for the amazing chutzpah of its proprietor who enticed us in! Pure New York Italian straight off the set of the Sopranos. Fantastic! Once seated, service was quick and friendly and we were offered our free glass of wine which was a very acceptable Chianti. The menu is varied without being too extensive and the choices are really good particularly the range of pastas. I ordered the lasagna, my companions the angel hair pasta with prosciutto and scallops, and penne with shrimp and asparagus all of which were absolutely delicious. No shortage of grated parmesan either which is always a plus in my book. We also ordered a side of broccoli with olive oil and garlic which our charming waiter inadvertently thought we ordered as a starter so he brought it to begin with along with some crusty bread. It was a happy surprise because none of us had ever had broccoli as a starter before and it was absolutely fabulous. Cooked perfectly and tossed in extra virgin olive oil and roasted garlic, it was a revelation. I shall certainly be serving this as a starter at home in the future. Before I read any other Tripadvisor reviews, I'm giving this a five because I think it really deserves it. A great little local Italian which I think punches above its weight in an area of larger more pretentious neighbours! I would most definitely go back - if only for the broccoli! Go and try it out and see what you think.

Best Meal Ever

By Jason K |

I had the black linguine with shrimp and calamari. This was possibly the best food I have ever eaten. The waiter was exceptionally nice. Everyone in my party loved their food.

Tasty and friendly

By daniela r |

We were an 11 pax group and the owner and waiters received and accommodated us perfectly. The service was great and the food was just delicious. I sincerely recommend Lobster Ravioli. Great for big groups with kids and seniors.

Just OK

By ripcordzz |

We ended up looking specifically for this place based on a friend’s recommendation who used to live in the area. I have to say we were just a bit disappointed. The bread was great, but that’s about it. The seafood pasta was just ok. I’d probably look for another option next time we’re in Little Italy.

The heart of Little Italy

By Ethan B |

The owner was great, along with the rest of the staff. The lasagna was good as well. They had the best tirmasu for sure!

Awesome Lunch!!!

By Myrna |

Thanks to Tony's amazing street side promo ( I think that was his name ) we decided to sit down, have some sangria ( included with the lunch), and order lunch. I had Caesar salad topped with grilled chicken and Steve had the lasagna - both dishes were delicious and the service was quick and wonderful!! We would definitely recommend it and yes - we would return should we be in the area again.

In the end, crime does not pay

By Oliver S |

All kinds of Travel guides and History channel documentaries point to Unberto's Clam House as the infamous place of a mafia murder in the 1970s. Thus, there are always gawkers to visit and eventually consume. I've watched this place move twice, every time further South on Mulberry St. in Little Italy, its kitchen moving from seafood Italian to tourist Italian to tourist Mexican. Having found it in its third location last week (next time they'll probably go South of Canal!), I decide to give them a chance. Wrong decision. Bread- supermarket Italian. Olive oil full with sliced raw garlic and hot pepper. Music in the dining room: Mexican, even after we question that choice for a supposedly Italian place. TV: soccer on the Spanish channel. Personnel's language: Spanish. Pasta Putanesca($24): atrocious, dry, salty, overwhelmed by canned olives and capers, we leave it on the plates. Wine list: overpriced and limited. Prices: undeserving high. Patrons: tourists, mostly South of the border. Cost of above (plus 5 Long Island oysters): $100 before tip. Just skip it, ok?

Good but a bit expensive

Great place with friendly staff. A bit expensive but overall a good experiance and a great location.

Sunday Afternoon

By Kevin W |

The facility was classic NYC downtown typical of Little Italy(which is exactly what we were looking for)the food was very good(my wife had calamari with pasta and i had eggplant parmesan) as was the service...I was surprised that we were given a complimentary glass of sangria with the meal because we would have gladly paid for it. The "medium spicy)sauce with the calamari was just right ...nice place would gladly return but with so many choices in that area I will likely explore more before settling down to one spot

False Advertisment

Let's start with the guy who ropes people in to eat. He act like he cares, but he does not. He will literally stop talking to tables half way through a sentence to go try and get someone off the street to come in. He asked how our food was, then blazed by without us telling him how awful the chicken was. Then we asked him for water, he said ok and then ran the other direction. Finally waved down a bus boy to get us water. Then we had to ask for water again. Then we had to ask for water again. The non genuine host and lazy staff will make me never return here. #touristtrap #badfood #badservice

Italian eats..

By AB082212 |

While the food, in my opinion was only OK, I do have to say the hospitality is spot on. Which i believe is the make or break of a restaurant. We attended this restaurant in the middle of a festival, the price for the food was good, my moms dish was excellent where as mine (a simple Caesar salad) was only decent. That being said, the entire time we were there, they really took care of us, and we felt very good about the service received. There is definitely room for improvement however, a solid effort was made.

Excellent experience

By George1981 |

Nice place, the people are very friendly and they serve very well, in different languages, the food is very delicious and filling. I didn't know the place nor had anyone told me about it, but the person who was meeting people outside, a Chilean, told us that it was the restaurant where parts of the movie The Godfather was filmed, so curiosity made us get to know it and enjoy it there. Excellent experience

Little Italy Experience

By Naomi M |

We came to NYC looking for clams, and we were warmly greeted by the owner dancing and singing in the streets to Frank Sinatra- such a fun experience and made us feel very welcome! The servers were very personable and they gave us all the fresh bread we needed to enjoy our dishes. Portions were sizeable so you will not leave hungry! This place is not only good for clams, but the pasta, overall, is delicious. Perfect casual dining experience (not stuffy or white linen so if you are looking for that this is not the place). This is where you go if you're looking to dine like the locals and eat some hearty italian pasta.

Lovely Italian Food with history!

By Paul B |

Ate here while visiting NYC last month... Wanted more than just basic pizza or burgers and managed to find this place after a bit of searching! Buzzing location and loved watching the world go by.... Staff are great and the food is lovely... Go if you can!

A highlight of what's left of Little Italy

By Larry K |

Pasta and seafood in quantity. Order one item per person, no more. The portions are large and the seasoning is strong.

Excellent food

By Charles A |

We ate here on a trip to NYC. The service was very good. The food was excellent. For dessert we had a cannoli it was so tasty the best I have had. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Loved it!

By hwhudson |

Authentic Italian. Freshly made dishes that won’t disappoint. I’ve been here a few times on my visits to NYC and have always been pleased.

Authentic NYC Italian

By Michael g |

I haven't been to Umberto's in years and on this cold, rainy night, it seemed like the perfect destination for some good Italian cuisine. My son and I visited for dinner and were welcomed into the restaurant like we were family. We got a great table and service was very attentive. My son can be a picky eater, so they accommodated his request for penne with just butter. I had the baked clams, scungili with spicy marinara and the house red wine. All were quite tasty and gave me a great sense of culinary contentment. We didn't want to leave this warm, welcoming restaurant, but we will definitely visit again on our next trip to NYC.

The Best

By Jay |

If you are looking for a true Italian dining experience, this is it. Rated as "Food To Die For" ... literally ... by "Crazy" Joe Gallo I'm 1972. Historic and delicious. I wish had a third hand so I could give it 3 thumbs up.

Oh yeah!

By Bill N |

Nice bread and water to start, nice little bottle of super Tuscan came out with baked clams and side of meatballs. Had the bow tie pasta with sausage and broccoli. Others at the table enjoyed linguini with clams. Everyone quiet happy with food and service.

Ok food

By Renata C |

I went to this restaurant because I had good reviews about the linguini with clams. Well.. it’s just ok .. i has better across the street at Capri. But it’s ok .. I wanted to try something new. My husband and my son liked their dishes.. not worth going back.

Umbertos is a must in Little Italy!

By Lori P |

We walked by a lot of restaurants in Little Italy before choosing Umbertos and I'm so glad we did. This is a family owned and run establishment. We were offered free wine or sangria with our meal; the sangria is awesome!!! The staff could not have been more polite and attended to us throughout the meal. We talked with the owner a bit; very nice man. His family works there with him and honestly the work ethic of these people is one I wish I could instill in my students. Everything was clean; the ambiance was peaceful and serene. My son asked if they sold shirts and the owner came out and just gave him one. I mean this is a nice place run by nice people, with great food. So, what are you waiting for? GO there to eat!!!!!

Total disaster, ruining a nice family meal together

By J G |

Worst dining experience ever in Little Italy, don't risk the same ordeal. We chose the place for what seemed a nice menu with straight fish options vs. only seafood. They were out of 2 of them, the nicer branzino and sea bass, and offered salmon or tilapia to me, being sub par alternatives. I asked for a substitute using red snapper made the same way as one of the dishes they were out of and the waiter came back saying no problem. MY red snapper arrives ridden with garlic, clearly not prepared as ordered, and after having asked to avoid garlic several times earlier for appetizers. I had to demand a menu to hash it out with the waiter to prove the error. Got a 2nd attempt, which was a very poor looking, rushed dish that was raw inside. Again, I had it out with the waiter who argued it's fine inside. I sought out a manager and got passed to the owner ... what a piece of work, offering me dessert when I couldn't even get a proper main course or for a main course to go when nobody would ever take home fish to reheat later. My family is done with mains and I can't even get food that's edible. He did little to offer viable solutions and I frankly one can't trust his kitchen. I say he's basically left me with no choice but to leave hungry and put bad reviews of my experience and he throws me out. One person from the place follows me out and presses me for info about what's wrong, I tell him and the owner comes over to me a couple doors down the street and PHYSICALLY THREATENS ME and warns that he'll have the whole block basically join in if I don't immediately get off his block. He also mentioned he's done time and couldn't care less about going back to jail. Eat here at your own risk ... bad food, terrible service, incompetent kitchen, nasty and threatening owner, etc.

Very average restaurant

By Journey51614705384 |

Welcoming staff, very long wait for very average dishes, pizzas are bad, they are bathed in olive oil.

Only Stayed For A Beer

By Mark A. |

Great location. Only reason we stopped in was because a guy was outside barking for customers to come in. So we did. Only stayed for a beer. Place seemed quite average, so we continued down Mulberry Street.

Felt like home!

By Kurt Laferla |

Awesome experience here, the guy at the front knew where Malta was, after all Italians and Maltese are neighbors! Lovely food andatmosphere! Cent'ann!

A taste of Italy

By M155HUT |

Fantastic authentic Italian cuisine. I would recommend the meat balls with linguine pasta . The service was excellent . The service charge was included in our bill may be because we we tourists which was an added 20%.

Fresh pasta and Chianti!

By Sandra C |

We stopped in after wandering through Little Italy. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the homemade fresh pasta. My husband's dish wasn't on the menu and they were accommodating and made it for him. The lobster ravioli was delicious. Service was quick.

Entertaining Host but average food.

By IAT1980 |

My girlfriend and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago whilst visiting Little Italy. The host did a great job of enticing people to eat. He's quite a character and if you're lucky he might do a rendition of 'New York, New York' which he sings very well to be fair. We had an outside table and it was a lovely evening which allowed us to take in our surroundings and enjoy Little Italy. The service was good but the food was nothing better than ok. Not bad but nothing special either. I would also say it's quite pricey for what it is. Our meal came to just shy of $200 which I thought was a bit steep.

Fab spot!

By Melissa H |

Great restaurant very authentic and delicious food! However for us it has to be said that Tommy ‘the nose’ was the star attraction! He made our meal so memorable and was such a character! If you go be sure to get him to sing!

Authentic Italian for Thanksgiving!

By GRanger88 |

We spent the morning watching the Macy's Parade and then made our way south to Little Italy. All of the very many restaurants were actively recruiting customers from the streets. There seemed to be so many options, but we went with Umberto's and had one of the best meals. There were six of us and we each ordered something different. The meals ranged from very good to fantastic. The food was well prepared, authentic and delicious. We had good service and it was a very friendly, welcoming place.

Which Italian restaurants are worth going to on Mulberry Street-Google is right

By Bond Calloway |

Mulberry street is famous but has gotten so tourist that folks are paid to stand outside and talk you into a restaurant -however if you google which mulberry street restaurants are worth going to Umberto’s come up It is really good-Calms are the thing they do 28,000 during a festival

A Fun Experience

By sink77 |

If you are looking for a "Taste of Italy" then this is the place to visit. We were enticed in by the offering of free Sangria. The food was great and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was fun.

Go anywhere else

By OzLou |

Enticed by the loud doorman our daughters thought it would be fun.....yes it was fun but the food was very below average. That is all I can say!!!

Dishonest Barker, Below Average Food

By Julie B |

Sadly, my friend and I were enticed by the barker and his promise of "free wine" and "wine on me all night" The food was below average, even the bread was boring, and when we got the bill there were glasses of wine on it! The barker quickly turned to rude and elusive and denied having invited us while telling us "free wine" with dinner. He even left the property for a while to avoid speaking to us then when he came back, started telling another table that "people don't want to listen", in reference to us. Extremely rude! Even the servers were annoyed with his dishonesty and bad attitude. We were disappointed with the food and the rudeness of the barker. Thank goodness the servers were nice and attentive. With so many warm and welcoming places to spend money in Little Italy, we will not waste our time and money at Umberto's again.

Will Not Be Back

By EGF321 |

I ate the linguini in white clam sauce. It initially tasted pretty good, but I found myself wondering about that old saying about eating clams in the months with or without "R" in it. Unfortunately, I didn't wonder about that saying until I was projectile vomiting several hours after dinner. I can't say it was or was not the clam sauce, but no one else was sick (no one else with me had clam sauce), and I felt fine the next day. Needless to say, I won't be back. Such a shame for a restaurant with such colorful history.

Keep Looking!

By rskdoa |

Umberto's Clam House has seen its best days. I have done Little Italy for 55 years. Have eaten at all the restaurants and 40 plus San Genaro feasts. Have seen the changes over the years, and Umberto"s has NOT aged well! Just move on and stay away from the ultimate tourist trap!

Don’t Bother

By Barbara K |

Umberto’s gained its notoriety from its good food and in the 1970’s became more well known because of Joe Gallo’s demise there. We were visiting NYC and hadn’t been back to New York for awhile and decided to have dinner there. There were 5 of us and 3 of 5 were not all pleased with what we ordered. Should have known when we walked in and the place was empty! Service was okay but not great. There are plenty of places in Mulberry to choose from and this would be the last place I’d go!

Appetizers and later dinner

By Susan G |

Food was good not great! Linguine and clams had no clams in shells…. Came especially for clams.. dinner unlike photo on website… we didn’t enjoy the screaming singing host….. too heavy handed trying to people to stop and eat! The wait staff were great though.

Raw clams and wine--yes please!

By scottcharlesjohnson |

I have been here a couple of times and the food is fine, but the clams come on a tray with no ice on it. Is that weird? I eat a lot of clams and oysters and this is the only place I have seen that does not serve raw seafood on a bed of ice. That being said, I have never gotten sick and I will return.

Tommy "The Nose"

By Christopher K |

We were "convinced, by an offer we couldn't refuse..." by Tommy the nose (owner)... In all seriousness, Tommy convinced us to come in and eat. The free wine was chianti, it was pretty good. It reminded me of the homemade Italian red I grew up with in "the neighborhood". We were surprised by the quality of food. It is a must stop when visiting Little Italy. I can only speak to the spaghetti with bolognese, Hot Antipasto, and Eggplant Bruschetta. The food reminded me of the Italian food I grew up with in an Italian neighborhood. If you are in little Italy I would make it a point to be hungry and stop Here!

Two thumbs down

By Nancy B |

My daughter ordered pizza and was told that they ran out? The meatballs were cold. The soda was flat and the service was poor.

Yes! Yes! Yes! The best in Little Italy!

By krmiller18 |

Of all the restaurants in this area, we picked this one & I am SO GLAD we did!!!!!! From the Ravioli to the Spaghetti to the Gnocchi. Everything was perfection!!!! Go!!! You will be glad you did!

Christmas Eve Dinner

By Jessica G |

Everything was incredible from the 1st bite to the last. People that are leaving negative comments clearly do not know food. If something was off they would have fixed it immediately. and be happy to do it. The attention to detail by the staff with every detail is wonderful. We have been here a few times and we live in NYC - only place my son will go for gnocchi. There is a reason it has been around for about 50 years.

no concept of italian food service

By mortyd |

no visitor from italy would recognize or savor this imaging of italian food or service. just awfull with a punishing noise level. plus, not one italian in sight. just people of who knows what nationality trying to fake the italian language. cappuccino at night. da vero?

Must Try

By lthemack |

You must write the food it is super authentic and they treated us just like family. I know we are from out of town and if we lived here we would visit this place often. You have to meet Tommy the nose he is so cool.

Crazy Good Italian place

By jeffrun |

My Wife and I had dinner here with some friends. I made reservations and we found out when we arrived that the Feast of San Gerraro was going on. Umberto's was exceptionally busy. Nonetheless, the staff was friendly, the food was absolutely fantastic, and the prices very affordable. It was the best meal during our entire trip! A must visit if you are in Little Italy!

Tommy The Nose

By Adam |

Well, we were going to go to Da Gennaro but Tommy The Nose enticed us in with free wine or sangria. Good hustle, Tommy. Sold. I actually remembered him from a visit to the city nine years ago and was delighted he was still out there doing his thing. Wife ordered the chicken piccata and I got the linguine & meatballs with pasta fagioli soup to start. Good food, good wine, but service was a bit slow and the meal was a bit more than I would have liked to spend. If you decide to come, definitely get a table outside, or a table near the front where you can see outside. The main attraction here is Tommy; make sure you get him to sing.

One great disappointment

By Christian M |

We were persuaded by a charismatic waiter in the street offering us free wine/sangria. We gave in to this offer and sat down. When we got our drinks, the waiter spilled a drink on my friends white skirt and only have a tiny apology. It took a rather long time to prepare our food, which simply was terrible. The pizzas felt like dough with cheap topping, the sangria tasted like red wine with ice cubes and the soda tasted nothing like it should. When we'd left or plates half full to pay, the waiter assumed we wanted to pay 18% in tips because we were more than 10 people. In fact we were only nine people and so we refused to pay the tips and this only made the waiter seem irritated. I will never come back and not recommend this to anybody.

Incredible place in Little Italy

By Patrick G |

My family and I ate here after the host pitched it to us on the street, and we were glad we decided to! The host, Tommy, was hilarious as well as very respectful. The service was quick, not to mention the food was delicious! Definitely worth a stop!

A staple in my trip every time

By Pennie |

I'm from Vancouver island Canada. I've been to New York City 5 times and every single time I make a point of it to Visit Umbertos (tbh I thought it was called something else 7 years ago). I love the host and he sings Frank Sinatra to me every time. Staple for me. The clam linguine is amazing.

I loved the food and the wine and the singing

By Chatmanozz |

We went through Little Italy and met Tom who suggested we try A meal at Umberto's Clam house it was so nice he was the best host I can recommend the meatballs great meal great wine and made to feel very welcomed well worth a visit oh and Tom sang for us too

Umberto was a great host and

Umberto was a great host and the food was excellent!! It nice but not too fancy or overpriced. The service was subtle and attentive Go

Ate here with my family earlier this month. Great place. Food was amazing. Service was great. We were very pleased overall. Would return here for sure.

Delicious food in the heart of Little Italy

By MauriceTheTourGuide |

My wife and I ate here last week using a Groupon. What a good deal ! It would have been pricey otherwise. The service and food were great. The 3-course meals with a glass of wine were delicious. I had to try the house specialty of baked clams and enjoyed them very much. The veal saltimbocca my wife ordered for her entree and the seafood risotto I had were both great. We finished off our meals with a cannoli and a tiramisu. Try it, you'll like it !

Awful

By emma1987186478 |

Got talked into going from the guy working outside for a 'taste of real Italy' and on the promise of free wine all night. After one drink the 'free wine all night' came to an end. There was half a dozen of us ordering a mix of pizza and chicken Parma. The pizza wa inedible. It looked raw, cheese unmelted and uncooked. Chicken Parma sauce tasted like a tin of chopped tomatoes. Poor lad who was waiting on us gave us good service and looked embarrassed. They're just lucky we're so painfully British and polite as to not complain as there was plenty to complain about.

Umbertos Clam House - best in Little Italy

By Venture631708 |

I don’t write many reviews, but this place and it’s owner are truly a gem and not to be missed when visiting little Italy. Manny, the owner, waited on us himself and shared some of the colorful history of the place. The food was awesome and he took great care of us. If you are looking for good traditional (and reasonable) Italian food with amazing hospitality … Umbertos is the place.

Bait and switch!

By tmattox13 |

They show you the lunch menu to get you to sit down, even offer a free glass of wine, then GIVE you the dinner menu to order off of and the prices are completely different! When we asked to the lunch menu he got angry and started complaining about it to the bartender, right where we could hear. Then, the service was non existent! We also over heard him talking very badly about other customers as well! I would NOT ever visit this place again!

Best Italian!

By Mittensca |

This was the best Italian food ever! My husband is a food snob. He had spaghetti and meatballs and loved it! I had stuffed ravioli and left nothing on my plate. The owner was on the street bringing people in. Him and his staff were awesome!! I can't wait to go back next time in Little Italy!!

Bad: food, wine, service

By JenCurci |

The best thing about the place was the greeter who is there to talk you into going there and usually is annoying and wont leave you alone. Had to ask for water 2 times and it was during the heat wave (Mind the fact NO ONE else was outside) They sat us along the street (should be fine) but it was garbage day and the neighboring restaurant left 10+bags of smelly garbage next to us while we were eating!!!! Like i said NO ONE else was there so WHY put us there OR WHY NOT offer to move us when we clearly were holding our nose and vocally complaining how horrific it was. They said "Oh yea its terrible.... but its not our garbage"!!!!!!!!!!!! The bread was stale and NOT warmed up (the greeter said yea you don't serve good bread at ital restaurants bc you don't want to have the guests fill up on it!) for real! thats why!?!?! gross The "free wine with dinner" that was promised to us - we were charged $30 and when I quested the server he ripped it from my mothers hand (her class) poured it back into the carafe and said "Fine! You don't want to pay you cannot have anymore" RUDE!!!! The tomato for the caprese salad was not ripe... it was barely orange... This was the most horrific dinner experience I have EVER had and the food was barely eatable! In my option - Please save yourself and just pick another restaurant! The manager was not helpful at all - he watched as the server was rude Yelled at the greeter for saying free wine with dinner And started to slam chairs together and pile them up as we paid the bill!

So-so...

By Anita O |

Having walked Mulberry Street up and down twice to find the ideal place for dinner we finally came to the conclusion that the menus all looked much the same and we might as well pick Umberto's Clam House (not because of but despite the restaurant barker on the sidewalk). As it was a bit chilly we chose not to sit in the open front area but in the back - almost a bit too secluded. After a starter we had pasta with clams and a bottle of red wine. Ambiance and service were average, our food was ok with the quality not quite matching the price. Note: This is American Italian and not authentic Italian cuisine...

Mission trip luncheon

By dcarrer0 |

Great Italian food. Spaghetti, lasagna, pizza...pick your poison. All wonderful. $14.95 lunch menu is perfect. Free sodas but refills are not. Free bread but 2nds are not. Tony was a great host and sang while we were there. Hope to one day revisit.

Very good Italian

By Elizabeth M |

We visited Umberto's to try out the Italian food which was very good. We all had a glass of wine that was great. Place small but friendly wait staff and would suggest going to this place in Little Italy.

Pinnochio

By Jana S |

Baddest restaurant in Little italy! Don't eat here, they will ripp you off. There food And wine are the cheapest available! Warning

Clams on the half shell !!

By Rita S |

Umberto's has been a family favorite since I was a child and my Dad would take us to the San Gennaro Feast and we would hang out at Umbertos and watch all the festivities and eat seafood . It's nice to see a restaurant that is still present after 40 years in business !! A must when visiting Little Italy !!

Very good surprise !

By Paul S |

We have passed this place many times but this time they made us an offer we couldn't refuse & im glad we didn't! After we ordered the brought bread with a gr8 oil/garlic/herbed dip....yummy The sausages & peppers was huge & delicious & came on a heap of perfectly cooked pasta, we had 2 breaded chicken dishes the parmigiana & frances with wine/butter & capers, these also cam with pasta sides, they were gr8. We also had a linguini dish, I think it was over a pound of pasta. Oh ya don't miss the tiramisu very good.

Absolutely delightful!

By Patricia K |

We so enjoyed our dinner at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy! The pastas were fabulous and the free glass of wine was a nice surprise. The “barker” at the restaurant provided wonderful entertainment as he coaxed patrons to dine. He and two others also sang an Italian song and “New York! New York!” on the sidewalk to the delight of all diners! Outside dining was delightful and patrons were all talking about the wonderful food!

Clams no but Oysters yes

By rfsalomone |

Well known little Italy restaurant that didn’t disappoint. The singing doorman got us a table right away. My wife and I love oysters so we gave them a shot. They were excellent and we were told they were local. I had a white pasta with rappi and sausage. A little bit too much oil but was very tasty. My wife had a pasta dish with bay scallops and prosciutto. It was very good as well. We had a third person with us and they had the chicken parm. Good but not fantastic They are known for pasta and clams which I have had before. Too much garlic and oil in my opinion. On a side note they had left the kitchen door open. So when we sat down We clearly could see the cook making someone eggplant parm from scratch. They made me feel good about picking here to eat. Overall a good experience. Fast and friendly service.

Celebrating 100 yrs in America Papa Umberto Vincoli

By baberuth1960 |

Can not thank you enough. Food was great as always, but singing to me on my birthday was outstanding. My grandfather came to America on March 17 1919, and my birthday is March 17 1960. So it was a big day of visiting Ellis Island and Clinton Castle. We had such a great time dining in this icon of restaurant history in Little Italy NYC. I have dined at Umberto for years at many locations in the hood. But the clams are always fresh. See you soon.

Eat here!

By Kathryn G |

Don’t let the other reviews deter you from this place. We had the clams and grilled octopus. It was delicious. Sal , our server, was great! Eat here. You won’t be disappointed.

Why so expensive???

By ontop s |

For cup of coffee and tiramisu 20 $ why??? The place is not clean very dirty, and it was very expensive, it’s in little Italy , Manhattan

If you have to eat in Little Italy, it's not too bad.

By xfooey |

If it wasn't for the Groupon offer, I wouldn't eat here. Or any other place on Mulberry. Why do you need street hustlers trying to get you to eat? There are way better Italian restaurants elsewhere. Total cost of coupon + check was $80 of which they added a tip/service charge of $20. I can get a tastier meal for less than that elsewhere. But in a pinch, this place will do. It had history when it was located on the corner of Mulberry and Hester. And the food was better back then.

Eggplant Parmigiana is Delicious!

By dlbemoll |

I had the absolute best eggplant parmigiana I have ever had at Umberto’s. It was not breaded, you could actually taste the delicious eggplant. My daughter had the lasagna and it was delicious. We sat outside and had the perfect seats for a parade. It was a bit pricey, but I think that was due to the festival and the prices were competitive. The glasses of wine were expensive, but that is NYC. $14.00 a glass. The wait staff was very attentive. We had a great dining experience.

Good Service & Food.

By Mary C |

Had dinner here using a Groupon. Quite expensive so without the Groupon, I would not have come. Food was good. Ordered the NE Clam Chowder, baked clams (not worth it), arugula salad, zuppa mussels for appetizers. Had the linguine & white clam (too al dente for me & not so much clams), fettuccine Alfredo, broiled salmon (very good) and Seafood Marechiaro (very good). Friendly service.

Stale old tasting items. Didnt really enjoy. Didn't really taste fresh, sauce tasted like its been in a pot for a month

VERY good food

By Paul F |

Good experience from start to finish. Sat outside on a beautiful day and started with baked clams and then the linguini with clams- both were excellent! They were offering a free drink with lunch. Pricey but good.

Weekend in New York!

By davidstash |

I don’t get to NYC as often as I did, but each visit must include a stop at the magnificent Umberto’s. Always greeted by the legendary Tommy The Nose, I know the next hour our two is going to be great. Dining outside on a warm June 3, enjoying the great bread and oil......the plate of fettuccini with salmon is a more than ample feast. My guest’s pesto pasta looked too too good to be true. Simply stated. In New York?? In Little Italy?? Then get into Umberto’s. Fast!

Heart of Little Italy

By Kim K |

We had a wonderful experience from start to finish at Umberto's. The staff was friendly and courteous, and even told us a few jokes. The food was fantastic... we ordered calamari fra diavolo and baked clams, which is one of their specialties for appetizers. Both were very good. For entrees my fiancé ordered the red snapper marechiaro and I ordered the seafood marechiaro, another on of their specialties. We practically licked our plates clean. For dessert we had the chocolate torte and of course, a cannoli. Everything was absolutely delicious, even the complimentary house red wine. The only downfall was the choice of beer. But overall we had a great time and would definitely go back!

Times have changed

By j300m |

We used to always go to Umbertos when they were on the corner. Sat at the clam bar and enjoyed their food. Stopped in for the calamari/shrimp/hot sauce down the block on Mulberry. Disappointed is an understatement. Some of, if not the worst, calalmari/shrimp I've ever eaten. Would expect that quality of food in a chain restaurant, not in "Umbertos". Not really sure why anyone would go there anymore. The 2 other tables were also complaining about their meals. There are many other choices all over the city that would be happy to serve you a good meal.

Girlfriend trip to NYC

By pdkr1001 |

We went to Umberto's the first night we were in New York City. We went to Little Italy specifically to walk around then eat. There was a gentleman on the street coaxing customers to come eat there. There was outside dining as well as inside. We sat outside. The weather was perfect, the night was perfect, The service was fantastic, and the entire atmosphere is exactly what we were looking for. Salute!!

Wonderful dinner

By Lisa T |

This was a great place for a leisurely dinner with friend. The service was great, and the food was excellent. I recommend the black pasta with calamari and shrimp.

Be careful with how much they charge you

By Ivak |

We had lunch here. 3 pastas and 2 side dishes; for 110 USD. With tip, we asked them to take 130 and when we were back in Europe we realized they charged 140 USD.

Nice spot for lunch outside!

By Babs12564 |

Day trip from N.J. with hubby. Went to 9/11 Memorial and Museum and wanted to have lunch after in Little Italy. Walked down Mulberry St. looking at menus and decided to try Umberto's after the guy out front enticed us with a free sangria ;) Beautiful day to eat outside on the sidewalk, nice menu, hard to narrow down with those choices! Service was great, really enjoyed the bread with olive oil (loaded with fresh garlic and spices) for dipping! Hubby had Seafood Marechiaro and I had the Lobster Ravioli. Very pleased with both meals, a little expensive for lunch, yes, but those were our choices. There were certainly more reasonably priced items on the menu that looked really good too, including lunch specials! Something to fit any budget! We felt it was worth it for a nice lunch on a beautiful day in NYC!

A Nice Surprise

By Justin P |

We were cruising through Little Italy when we were stopped out front of Umberto's by Tommy inviting us to give Umberto's a try. We were hungry so stopped and took a table inside. The food was great and was prepared quickly. We enjoyed the bruschetta, fettuccine alfredo, shrimp scampi and lasagna. All were excellent. We all left full and happy. My only complaint was the prices were a bit high but its NYC and is to be expected.

Average food and lying waiter

By Footprints690384 |

Yesterday during a market in little Italy we decided to eat here. Our wife’s do not like soft drinks from tap, which we asked the waiter. “No no - it’s from a bottle”: he said. It tasted as poor as normal. We returned the coke’s - and the lying waiter just said that he found tapped coke good. Food average. Tip was chosen default. Starting at 15 and ending at 20%. Our waiter found that he deserved 18%. Just don’t go there. Picture is random from the fiesta.

Great Linguini & Clam Sauce Restaurant

By RONPECK |

We had just finished visiting the new Freedom Tower and I know Little Italy is a short cab ride away and I was in the mood for Linguini so I said let's go to Umberto's. It use to be on the corner but is now in the spot where Sorrento use to be because of a rent issue. We where greeted outside by a gentlemen who offered us free wine with our meal, we where going there anyway so this was a bonus. A lot of competition on the street so I guess he had to do something to get customers, good for us.

Not Umberto's of old

This is just a run of the mill Italian place. Nothing special about it, definitely not the Umberto's of old.

Little Italy gem!

By Sandi P |

My husband and I bought a Groupon and went to this restaurant for our first meal in New York. It was the BEST meal we had during the week. This is a little restaurant and is so amazing you won't even believe it. The dining room is small but the servings are big! My husband had clam chowder which was the best he'd ever had and I tasted it, wonderful, fresh and full of clams. I had a seafood salad which was filled with clams, prawns and calamari. It was amazing. My husband had scampi for his entree, the prawns were huge, at least four bites each. I had seafood linguine and it was not disappointing in the fresh seafood area. We had cannoli for dessert and it was crispy and creamy filling. So delicious. If you have the opportunity to visit this restaurant you will be filled with food that was obviously made with love and commitment to quality.

Great find

We were visiting Little Italy with another family. This Restaurant offered a choice of food and prices that suited everyone in the party. Great seafood as well as more regular dishes as Lasagne.

been to nyc several times and we always go to little italy. first time eating at umberto"s and the food and atmophere were great. we sat outside and were very entertained by Tommy " the nose"

Good Italian pasta

By Adrian S |

The pastas are very good, with the typical Neapolitan Italian flavor, there was promotion, but charge an excessive tip, consult before sitting

Impromptu Dinner

By Manuela B |

Last night the ambiance at Umberto's was epic. Mulberry Street was closed to traffic. Singer's ( Sinatra songs) were making their way up along the street. Empire State Building in the background My niece and her husband had stopped into NYC while on their honeymoon. We took them to one of our favorite restaurants. Umberto's in Little Italy. The food is always excellent. The wait staff is very attentive. Just love coming here. The average price for dinner $18 to $26. Will always recommend this eatery. My niece was beaming with joy over the experience.

Fun service but food average

By M0ZGirl |

We tried the clams on the waiters recommendation and they were nice enough but nothing special. The other meals were similar and the wine wasn't great. Not a bad meal but you can do a lot better in Little Italy.

Such an enjoyable lunch

By royadestroyaa |

Of course we were drawn in by the free sangria-- and it was good sangria! The meals were delicious, the bread beforehand was a great appetizer. The man who beckons you in knows how to entertain his guests! Definitely reccommend-- not very pricey at all, especially with a free alcoholic drink!

This was PastAmazing!

By Miguel C |

The food was amazing! The attention and warm wellcoming from his host "Tommy the nose" and all the restaurant's personal. I have no words to continue describing this amazing experience of fantastic homemade pasta, great sangria and kindness

Surprised

By lookie-brookie |

I will say that the man on the street in the full length fur coat was overwhelming, but our whole family was happy to have eaten our thanksgiving lunch here. We were all given a complimentary glass of wine and bread with garlic oil. Our meals were all warm and delicious on this cold day.

Absolutely amazing

By elizlorr |

Do yourself a favor and visit this fantastic restaurant! My family and I were walking down the street to go to a restaurant my mother had been to before. Suddenly, Tommy caught us on the street and invited us inside for free sangria or wine. That’s what interested us but the amazing service and the amazing food is what amazed us. At first I was hesitant to eat somewhere where someone outside “begged” us to come in. But I quickly learned he did us a huge favor. The inside is cozy and gives it a mom and pop feeling in this huge city. We were even treated like family. This is definitely a must-visit each and every time in the city.

Famous Italian open-kitchen

By Pete |

In 1972, there was a mafia hit that took place at this restaurant, and is still remembered today. It's an Italian seafood restaurant found in Little Italy. It's mentioned in the Sopranos TV show and an old Bob Dylan song. It's also been frequented by famous people, like Robert Diniro. It has an open kitchen- meaning you don't have to go all the way in. I picked up an Umbertos t-shirt that I kept for twenty years. This was an interesting restaurant that anybody going to Manhatten should definitely visit!

lobster ravioli and cannoli

By WillYoung83 |

went here solo on a freezing cold day in December for lunch. was pretty quiet inside but i imagine it would get lively at night. Its old school New York Italian vibe was very appealing and the starter of fried calamari was great and a massive portion. also got a free glass of red wine. Had lobster Ravioli which was also excellent and finished off with a very good cannoli.

Famous Little Italy

By Bruce A E |

Bobs Sera! We dined & Umbertos Clam House in Little Italy on a slow, uncrowded, rainy Mon night. Became famous in the 70's as a result of a 1970's Mob Shoot out in front of Restaurant. Now, it's Very Safe! Manja!! Hot Anipasto was Delish. Cold Seafood Salad, seafood Linguini, Veal Parm, Steak were all good. Delish Cannoli's with Crunchy Shells & carrot cake were beautifully presented with chocolate drizzle lines. linen table cloths/napkins & Nice size portions. After dinner, rain stopped & we were able to walk Mulberry St & do a little street shopping. Service was leisurely & some thought a little slow for an uncrowded restaurant. Seemed like they cooked to order from scratch-takes time. Tommy, the Host outside in front of Restaurant gave us a warm welcome/ goodbye. Nice Chatty guy!

We stopped to eat and were pleasantly pleased

By Kim S |

They have a guy out front asking you to come inside for food and free wine. We decided to try it. Can’t remember his name. Called himself “the nose”. To our surprise the wine was ok. The baked clams should be ordered by all who visit. I had the lobster ravioli and loved it. I wanted a true Italian food experience since I live in Missouri and this proved true. I can’t speak to the meal price since our friends snuck the ticket and paid but most meals are $$ Delish food and friendly staff.

Great Family Dinner

By Joe |

I visited Umberto's Clam House last night with my wife and in-laws for dinner before going to a Broadway show. We were all in the City from out of town, and Umberto's came recommended by a friend. We are very glad we came in - we had a wonderful meal with great service and a little "local flavor" entertainment. Reservations: We made reservations for 5 PM in order to accommodate an 8 PM show. We were a few minutes late due to some seriously bad traffic but it was not a problem for the restaurant, who graciously had a five person round table reserved. Local Flavor: A man standing outside the restaurant provided some real "local flavor" and entertainment to our group. My father-in-law was shown to the table by this man (leather jacket, jeans, reeked of cigarette smoke) who pulled menus off of other tables that guests appeared to be using and gave them to us. He kept calling up "VIPs" and made a number of unsolicited recommendations about what to order for dinner. Our server seemed really annoyed with the guy and when we asked about him, he shrugged his shoulders and gave a "what can you do about it?" kind of look. We thought he'd be angling for a tip on our way out, but that wasn't the case (he was nowhere to be seen). Very entertaining to say the least. Food: Wonderful - we all tried a different course. We ordered the baked oysters and the calamari as appetizers and they were delicious - the oysters were a huge hit and we would definitely order them again. For dinner, I had the linguine with clams (as recommended by the local character) and it was absolutely delicious! A very large serving of pasta in a great white wine and garlic sauce, and the clams were large, fresh, and delicious. My wife ordered the seafood risotto and said it was great, reminding her of one of the dishes we had last fall in Italy. My brother-in-law raved about the lobster ravioli and thought the portion size was solid. For dessert we went with the NY cheesecake and the carrot cake - both amazing and definitely recommended. Price: Very good, given the amount of food and the service. Appetizers ranged from $12-18 each, main courses were in the $18-30 range, and dessert was about $8 each. All in, we had wine with dinner and felt the check to be quite reasonable. Service: Wonderful. Our server was very friendly and entertaining, and graciously helped our party make decisions on dinner and dessert. He certainly earned his gratuity and did a great job. Overall: The restaurant is a small hole in the wall and a great place for dinner. We really enjoyed our experience and would come back again in a heartbeat.

Try this in Little Italy

By Ian W |

This is one of the many restaurants lining Mulberry in Little Italy - and frankly one of the best. It has been around forever - and the food is exceptional. You have to get there early to get the branzino as they only have about 30 a day. Worth it! You'll be greeted by Tommy "the Nose" - who stands at the entrance and is a genuinely nice dude. You have many options to eat - this place is a classic and worth a visit.

Strange staff

By Addie B |

Guy got us off the street with the offer for free wine, most of the restaurants looked the same so we opted for it thinking it'd save us a round of drinks. Unfortunately the waiter didn't agree and wouldn't serve the drinks till we'd ordered our mains and wasn't exactly friendly about it. We should have walked then but we were tired and hungry. Once we'd ordered food and another round of drinks suddenly everyone was friendly again. Apart from the waiters still arguing with each other, really bizarre Food was good but we had to ask for black pepper and parmesan which should be bought out as standard. Bill was expensive with added tip, like most places in NYC

Not impressed

By Orlando M |

I took my family out to dinner to little Italy and have heard of Umberto's so we tried it; A man was outside by the Menu and didn't know if he worked there or not, so once we decided to stay, we ordered out food; surprisingly, the entree came with no soup or salad, and Waiter did not introduce himself or mentioned about specials,or suggestions.

San Gennaro feast

We had a great time last night! Food is great but the staff is better! We know that is a crazy 10 days for everyone, all were hustling to make all patrons happy. It's probably the 8th time eating here and always enjoyable!!

Little Italy outing

Very attentive with good food and generous portions. In the heart of little Italy and centrally located

A bit of nostalgia;)

By dolphinorlando |

Now you have to visit this place if only to taste the clams and see the bullet holes ;) The free wine was a plus. The pasta was very good and service matched. Not 5 stars as was told table was reserved where we wanted to sit, but in our time there no one arrived!! Good place to take in little Italy and watch the world go by! Fully recommend and enjoyed my time here :)

Really Good Italian!

By Starrfary78 |

This place is delish! Bread sooo good! Eggplant Bruchetta good, has ricotta and balsamic glaze. The balsamic glaze makes it sweet, it's really good. Cold Antipasto so yummy! Loved the seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp and calamari) with al dente linguine! I chose the light cream sauce as my sauce. It was good with the red sauce, too, it was a little spicey. We like it like that. There Chicken Parm was good- the marinara was not spicey at all, which is how my mom likes it. Definitely recommend going here!

This place has nothing to do with authentic Italian Trattoria.... Disappointment

By katess |

That place has nothing to do with real Italian trattoria. The portions came huge and only because we were hungry and tempted by free wine, we ate it. The Carbonara with pea + overloaded with some sort of thick sauce?- I have never seen that served in Italy. The second dish also looked more like from school canteen than anything homemade. Overpriced dishes and not authentic. Avoid
