Imported Singapore Hawker Stands

By Drbrooks4337 |

For several years, we have waited with much anticipation for The coming of Singapore style hawker stands to come Stateside. Finally, it is in NYC. With a plethora of S. E. Asian offerings, one can mix and match cuisines or delve in depth to one country’s offerings. We chose Char Kuey Teow and Oyster Omelette. Both were delicious, but the omelette was overly salty. While the prices were not like Singapore’s, where many eat out instead of preparing at home, the value was there. My Oyster Omelette had five huge oysters, which were delicious. The Char Kuey Teow hit all the marks. I highly recommend a visit. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the choices. You will want to return soon.

My husband and I went today for the first time

Would I confuse this with a hawker center in Singapore? No. But it was very enjoyable. We shared a good dish from Jakarta Plate. It was not crowded on a Saturday just before noon. It is very close to RadioCity.

southeast Asian vibes

By Jspsihota |

As Malaysians/Singaporeans, we are so happy to come across this gem. Lots of different food options with so much flavour. This is the closest to southeast Asian food. Even the vibe and atmosphere is on point. We had the roasted chicken rice from Hainan Jones, lamb satay from Padi D’ NYC, kuih lapis from Lady Wong’s, and Teh Tarik from Kopifellas. Highly recommend all. Lots of seating as well.

Asian Street Food Market

We were looking for a causal lunch spot and found Urban Hawker. So many choices from Singapore and Southeast Asia. Several of us had fried rice, which was excellent. I had an Indonesian chicken dish that was flavorful and filling. Enjoyable experience.

If you don't mind eating out of plastic ...

By Eileen T |

If you like eating out of plastic, then most likely you'll enjoy the food. For me, the experience was greatly compromised by plastic bowl, plastic lid, plastic fork, plastic spoon, plastic knife. The experience of heavenly flavors from Singapore is undermined by wastefulness. Go to NONYA at Grand St in Chinatown where you get porcelain plates and chopsticks and spoons - and better prices. Suggestion for Urban Hawker - switch plastic out for recycled paper (like Wholefoods and McDonalds) or even better - use banana leaves. It may cost more, but it will intensely enhance the eating experience and pay off in the end.

Opening hours don't reflect opening times for all stalls

By CB1000 |

Great selection of stalls. The prices are shocking compared to eating in an actual Singapore Hawker Centre but come on it's still much cheaper than a trip. :-) The Haianese Chicken Rice is at Hainan Jones is so good. Takes me back to our short time living in Singapore. The better deal is the half chicken. The pastries at Lady Wong's are amazing. We got there shortly after 10 am when they say it opens but only a handful of stalls are open at that time..most don't start taking orders until 11am. They also close earlier than stated times on website.

Great Idea But Something Lost In Translation

By Doctor-and-Lawyer |

The “hustle and bustle” of Singapore hawker stalls is a great idea which adds needed dimension to NYC midtown but quality, taste, presentation and - sadly - price leave much to be desired. We’ve visited twice and had dishes from almost half of the 17 stalls. Apart from the Hainanese chicken which was as good as that on offer in Singapore, the rest all lacked that certain “je ne sais crois” of authenticity. For example, two core Singapore staples fell far short of the mark. Daisy’s Dream Laksa lacked richness and was far more “noodly” with sparse ingredients than expected and Padi D’NYC‘s satay sauce was inexcusably watery (and oily) with only the barest taste of peanut. Great idea, but key elements of execution and value are missing.

The best roti prata in the world!

By Rick K |

Incredible choices. Singapore, Malaysia and Jakarta food. But the roti prata/canai is the best. Made by chef who is ex-Raffles. Roti is fusion of SE Asia and French pastry. Incredible! (Order with fish curry)

Great Singapore food

By Dansker58 |

We were so excited to find this new restaurant! It is set up like a food court, or hawker court, one finds in Singapore. Each stall has a speciality and it is very hard to decide what to try,but everything was amazing. We had the Singapore fried rice and stir fry noodles. Lots of tables, but can be a challenge to find an empty one. Very cool almosphere and great location. Prices were definitely higher than one finds in Singapore. Easy to come several nights and never be dissapointed.

Great Asian Food and Great for Pre-Theater

By Jesse M |

Jakarta Munch First visit to Urban Hawker and its a great collection of food stands oriented to Singaporean cuisine. I chose Jakarta Munch, an Indonesian food stand and ordered Nasi Uduk with braised chicken and spicy Gulai sauce. Spicy but not overly so, about the level of medium spice Indian food. Rice is flavored with coconut milk. Gulai Sauce went well with the chicken, coconut rice and toppings (pickled cabbage, scallions, fried shallots and fried garlic). Very satiating and will be a pre-theater go to. Menu allows you to choose base, protein and sauce in a fast casual way which helps given the breadth of choices at Urban Hawker. The meal was also on the healthy side and not really heavy or with high sugar content. Vicky was helpful with order guidance. There is a small bar in the Urban Hawker facility as well. My girlfriend ordered veggie supreme at Dim Sum Darling with chicken broth. Super flavorful noodle dish that also contained veggie dumplings. Treasure chest of options at Urban Hawker.

Definitely try this "food court"

By Freebirdvt |

This eclectic food court is my new favorite! Promoted as Singapore street food, its an eclectic mix of different countries. Tradition had a dish called BBQ chicken...boneless thighs with a jofran glaze, pickled scallions, shallots and peanut sauce on the side. You have a choice of rice, I tried the java rice and loved it! We got Dumplings from Dim Sum Darling, which were good but nothing to write home about. Hainan Jones had a signature chicken and rice dish that was probably the best chicken I've ever eaten. A huge portion of rice, chicken on top and veggie on the side...the sauce was delicious. I didn't order anything too spicy, so if you like spice, these recommendations may not be good for you. My family (including a 7 year old) were all happy and full when we left. Close to Radio City...its a must try!

Fun Casual Food Hall

By donniek88 |

This Singapore Food Hall is a great place for a tasty casual meal. It was hard to choose among the wonderful variety of dishes. We had a delicious tofu dish from Jakarta Munch and the roasted chicken rice from Hainan Jones. Both were great!!

Tastes of Singapore in MidTown

By seanworc |

Casual food hall based on the hawker halls of Singapore. Per my daughter, this hall is fancier than the ones in Singapore. There are about 12 stalls serving Indonesian , Malaysian, and Hainanese foods. Think noodles, dumplings, soups, samosas, and parathas. There is no formal seating, just find a table. Prices are cheap for MidTown Manhattan. Hall is very close to MOMA, Radio City Music Hall ,Rock Center, and Broadway theaters. There is one stall that serves beer and liquor.

tons of fantastic choices... it will cost you though!

By Lori M |

this newly opened food hall had an incredible array of choices. All the stalls looked wonderful! cuisines from many different Asian countries were available - I wanted to eat at every one of them. sadly, the prices are pretty high, especially considering it's named after hawker stalls (usually cheap but high quality food).

Good variety of Singapore street foods!

By serenescene1818 |

Very tasty food. Recommend pork ribs with sesame noodles; ribs are fall off the bone tender with tasty sauce and noodles have great smoky taste. Also liked curry chicken with noodles. I wanted to try hainan chicken but that stall was closed. They close at 9:30 which is early for NYC but places are closing earlier since pandemic.

Street food of Singapore in the heart of NYC.

By L Tran |

Rating on the laksa I had alone, it would be a 3. However, the setting was unique in NYC, and possibly in the whole USA. It brought back the memories of my trips to Singapore and its hawkers. I will come back to try other dishes. BTW, my friend’s nasi lemak was good.

Great choices and variety,

Fun and Delicous Food Mall

By ALEX P |

A food mall of Asian and other delights. So many options, and all seem to be authentic! Reasonably priced and made to order. Dream of Anthony Bourdain and I can see why. Lots of options and good fast faire.

Excellent food - authentic

By Dunnottar 55 |

Living in Singapore I was keen to check out the Urban Hawker. Very happy with the experience - obviously not Singapore hawker prices due to it's downtown location not far from Times Square - but the food was excellent. Very authentic. Worth a visit but as I say, not Singapore hawker prices

All Asian Food Hall

By Stan J |

Urban Hawker was a lot of fun and good food. It is a food court, so there are several different stalls to choose from. Both of the stands we tried were very good. Great mid-town Manhattan location. Of course that means Mid-Town prices.

Check it out for variety and value

By bbsydney96 |

When you can’t quite decide what you feel like, head to Urban Hawker. There are so many choices you are bound to find something that takes your fancy. The meals we had were cooked to order and were delicious. The staff we dealt with were very friendly and service was great. Facilities staff keep the area clean and tidy and that’s not an easy job in an eatery such as this. They do a great job. Great value and loads of choice.

Not great

By Docp |

We were looking forward to trying Urban Hawkers as so far all our meals in NYC have been great and we love Asian food. Sadly all 3 dishes we ordered fell short and none of us ate more than half. Fried rice and green Thai curry should be pretty safe bets in most places, maybe they had too much of a Singapore twist for us, or maybe they just weren’t nice.

Enjoyable Singapore based food

By StephenCross |

Urban Halker is essentially a food hall themed around Singaporian food. Lots of options …all relatively similar in nature. Good spot and recommended.

Asian food hall!
