Delicious food, relaxed vibe

By CheshireSpringBreeze |

So many delicious options for vegetarians and the wine was the best I had in NYC! Good portions and value and nice easygoing vibe. Definitely worth a visit.

Horrible Service

By Fernando-Botargues |

We reserved the restaurant via Open Table. Upon arrival (early dinner at 5pm) the restaurant was half empty. We requested the host for a table by the window. He rudely said that only two tiny tables were available next to the noisy bar. We sat, but after 2 minutes we decided to go to a friendlier restaurant. The host cared less. We went to Ethos Gallery, which was truly amazing. I called Village Taverna to talk to the manager and let him/her know about the issue. The woman who picked up the phone did not want to let me talk to him and instead asked me to leave a message. I refused and alerted that I will make this review public. She cared less. There are so many Greek option in NYC. Why bother to try this badly managed restaurant? AVOID

Meh, okay

By poonamallee |

Nice place and there are some die-hard co-worker fans and so went there for a lunch meeting. Very noisy for a meeting place. Service was excellent. I only had a watermelon salad and so I cannot comment on other warm food. Watermelon was good but I am getting a bit tired of too much arugula syndrome in the city :( Meh!

JUST OK!

By Janet A |

There is really nothing remarkable about this neighborhood restaurant for me to keep coming back. The food is just ok and it can be very noisy. For really good Greek food, take a trip to Astoria, one of the outer boroughs. Its just a short subway ride away. Try Taverna Kyclades or Telly's Taverna, both with " can't go wrong" prices. Then stop at Titan, a Greek grocery store. Buy some pistachios, feta, baklava, etc. to take back on the subway with you. It will be worth the trip.

Got my lamb fix

By Lcg134 |

My friend and I had dinner here. The staff were friendly and attentive and kept coming to top up our water. We shared halloumi and feta in pastry to start which came as one one whole piece you had to cut. Both were really delicious but filling and we were also given complimentary flatbread with olives. For main I had lamb shank which came in a giant bowl with loads of veg. Again it was delicious and the lamb just fell off the bone but it was far too big a portion and I was unable to finish it all.

So-So

By Bob H |

Having been to Athens and craved their delicious baby lamb chops upon our return to NYC we were expecting to experience the same cooking. Not the same. Salads-pork skewers-just O.K. Expensive,

Treated us like family!

We stumbled upon this place after leaving the bookstore around the corner and really enjoyed ourselves. I believe the restaurant is fairly new but has a great fresh decor. Lots of white, very clean looking. I ate the Makaronada, which is Greek spaghetti and it was very good and a huge portion! I could not finish it myself. We all shared a humus app and it was very good as well. I also tried grilled octopus for the first time and it was very good. So I have told you that all the food was good but as good as the food was what made this place was the service. Our waiter was so very nice and helpful and very attentive. One of the owners came by and talked with us for a good while. He even had the waiter give us free desert. I recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Nice Neighborhood Gem!

By Yorkiemom520 |

This was my first time visit with friends to this restaurant. We were seated immediately and wait staff were very friendly. We all ordered drinks and wait staff gave us enough time to review menu. We shared the Greek salad and the fried zucchini chips. I ordered the scallop special, my friends ordered lamb kebab, branzini . My scallop dish consisted of 4 scallops. I would think that I would have between 5 or6 scallops. My dish was very well prepared. My friends enjoyed their dishes and their portions were ample. Prices were a little above average. I would consider returning to this restaurant in the future.

Sooo Good!

By Incandesto |

This place was great. Prices were reasonable. The food was so fresh and delicious! We ordered both gyro plate and chicken souvlaka, and both were sooo good. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive. The restaurant itself had a good mix of locals and tourists. Yum!

warm, welcoming, delicious!

By MattClaire097 |

I love this simple, family-run, happy place, with big windows and Greek colors. The food is good, much better than in other more pretentious Greek restaurants. The grilled octopus is my favorite, closely followed by the deep fried calamari, but there are many other delicious dishes, dolmades for example. Everything is fresh, tasty and nicely presented. Staff is warm, welcoming and professional, and particularly sweet to children, and prices are very honest. Portions are HUGE, so do not order too much!! Could you ask for more?

Greek comfort food

By MABM917 |

This taverna on university is always good. I came with my friends for Palm Sunday lunch. We had village salad, grilled haloumi, fried calamari, keftedes, fries and the special cod croquettes. Everything was great except for the croquettes which were awful. We had fun nonetheless!

Excellent Food

By tshughes |

Best Greek food I've had in years. Nice atmosphere. The service was a tiny bit slow but not terribly slow. We just loved the place.

Nonexistent Customer Service

By Alecia B |

April 15, 2016 - Yesterday I called and placed a catering order on my credit card for ten people with delivery today at 11:30am. At 11:34am I called to check on the delivery: beef skewers, chicken skewers, vegetarian moussaka, hummus, salad, rice, pita, 8 bottles of water. The person in charge of catering answered and said he was very sorry but the order was not given to him so he has not prepared the food. The earliest he could prepare something would be one hour to be delivered. He hadn't even bothered to call me! So here I am running out to Pret A Manger at the last minute to buy whatever I can. I will NEVER order from this place again!

Favorite Souvlaki in the City

By bwihl |

My family is from Greece and continues to visit often and every time we're in the city we always make sure to stop by. The staff is friendly and the food is really good, tasty and unpretentious. They make excellent souvlakis, the best ones I've had in the States. For classic Greek food they are definitely worth a visit.

Excellent!

By Bad Ass Babushka |

This place gets it. Awesome atmosphere, attentive service and the food - well, in a category onto itself. Fresh, bold flavors, expertly prepared. And the portions are large, you won’t leave hungry! The wine list is great too, had a Macedonian red that was excellent. Have already made my reservation for the return visit.

Best meal in New York

By Sinc5076 |

At last!! We found a great restaurant that gave quality service to their customers, are caring and gave us a fabulous meal. Generous potions and wonderful authentic food. Can recommend highly

Not so much Greece, but more faux Greek

By Milehighclub |

I've been to this restaurant in its early infancy and was not impressed so I decided to give it another chance and wait a little while before returning. I'm not so much of a Greek expert but dating one and traveling to Athens several times has given me a taste for what truly is good Greek food. NowI NEVER expect a restaurant in NYC to be a Greek food expert, but I was hoping that this restaurant near Union square to at least serve a decent GYRO, and save me a trip to Astoria for my greek food cravings. The service was very good and the staff was very attentive. The atmosphere was simple and not too chaotic as many restaurants are. We were immediately serves warm sliced pita bread with olives in olive oil. YUM To my dismay the meat was over cooked, although the presentation was impressive and they served American portions....lol We alos ordered the mixed grill platter and the portions was big enough to share, but alas the meats were not all grilled to perfection and some even arrived cold. On the positive side the grilled octopus salad was delicious and the simple greek salad of lettuce, red onions, olives and feta cheese was refreshing. I'm not going to say the food was bad, but it certainly did not conjure up any Greek dishes I recall. Edible Faux Greek.

Excellent food and Wine

By SingletonFamily |

I've eaten at a lot of Greek restaurants in NYC, and I'd say that this one has the best food. The chopped salad was amazing tonight and served with excellent pita slices with olives in oil. The shrimp in lemon and garlic sauce was fantastic, very fresh, and served with a great salad and roasted potatoes. Very good wine list as well. This is my new favorite Greek restaurant in NYC. They were very busy during the holidays, but the service was very attentive.

Terrific Greek food.

By arthshapiro |

Village Taverna has it all -- great food, nice atmosphere, and friendly service. Ask for and try some of the Greek wines. You're in for a treat.

Very good Greek taverna

By Sergeykalinin |

Very good Greek taverna! I have travelled to Greece many times and can say that Village taverna is really very Greek;) Very friendly staff, tasty food and warm atmosphere make this place really good!

Once is enough, thank you

By WS_K_1997 |

Popped in here for some late lunch. It was not very busy but we were shown to a table near the side door which was locked. We had the AC blowing on us the whole time which was nice at first but then made the stay quite uncomfortable. The food was OK but over priced.

Excellent Greek Food & Service

By Joseph M |

Great Greek Food. Excellent service. Good Value. A place we want to bring friends. We had Pastitsio ($25.50) and a Gyro Platter ($21.95) and two draft beers ($8 each)-- both meals were plentiful and very well done. Among the better greek restaurants. They also do a big take-out business.

Greekalicious!

By Agustina B |

First of all the staff is so friendly. the waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and recommended the house specialties. I had the Octapodi, which is grilled Octupus, a specialty in Greece. the octopus was chewy but soft and with a perfect grilled flavor over tomatoes and other veggies. It was one of the best octopus ive had in a while. super tasty! we also had the Pikilia A selection of three cold appetizers. (tzatziki, taramosalata and skordalia). my favorite by far was the Taramosalata, made with red caviar. It was a very nice blend of citrus flavors and caviar. The traditional Tzatziki was also very good, awesome with some pita bread. we also had a bottle of greek white wine, which was very refreshing and a reasonable price, a great recommendations from the very friendly waiter. So if your around the union square area I suggest you try this restaurant with its very authentic greek flavors and homey setting.

almost very good rating

By Jean B |

Had lunch with family and the restaurant is nice and worm, service was nice, we seat inside of course and order some drinks then octopus salad, very good, lamb shank, excellent, gyro plate, was ok and moussaka, absolutely terrible!! so if the moussaka had been good will be a great place to return often but going to a Greek restaurant and have a terrible meal that's not right.

Wonderful food in a relaxed setting

By BroadwayBruce |

A trio of New Yorkers wandered into Village Taverna on a Saturday night. For us, it offered fresh tasty quality food and enough room for us to stretch, chat and relax. That is a luxury in New York. The food was tasty and plentiful. We shared the mussels, enough for three. The fresh pita and olives were a fine compliment. Our entrees were also fresh, well prepared and generous. This is neighborhood dining for folks who want quality without pretension. There are many offerings of fresh fish, lamb, cheeses etc as well as the basics, also done well. While a bit noisy at times, the meal was up tempo but not enough to ruffle those seeking escape from their daily lives of hustle and bustle.

Big family dinner

By dashdoggy |

Had a big family dinner with friends here the other night. Had a nice easy drinking bottle of wine from Greece. The hummus and pita was great as was the greek salad (no lettuce- traditional). The lamb kebob was excellent. Really nice place for a family meal. The service was really good too. Would go back tomorrow if I could.

Fresh Greek food

By lhamilt77 |

This restaurant is a short walk from the office and I appreciate their fresh and flavorful offerings. Maybe it's a smidge on the pricier side for a lunch, but I don't mind! My fav dish is the shrimp souvlaki, delicious and nutritious.

Excellent greek food and service

By Ed C |

This is close to the office so I stop by every so often. I do enjoy the very tasty dishes and sometimes have an excellent dessert. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food served.

Great local venue

By Fatemeh L |

This neighborhood restaurant has great Greek food and service. The portions are large and the staff goes out of their way to make one feel comfortable and at home. We had appetizers, the grilled platter and desert. It was all fantastic!

Excellent cuisine, can accommodate Celiac gluten free

By Rene S |

Greek wait staff, traditional style menu but with lots of options, and the chef chooses primo ingredients. LOVE this place. Juiciest roasted chicken I've had recently, and the food tasted too good to be gluten free, but I didn't have a Celiac reaction. ;-) LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. Highly recommend

Great food; Friendly staff; Great location

By Alexico |

The place was PACKED when we got there. The staff was working their tushes off. But once we got hold of our waitress for the night named Tiffany we were in for a treat ! She sat us (my wife and I) down at a table for 2 and we got the warm bread and olive oil. My wife ordered the sea bass, I chose the gyros dish. Both were exquisit ! Great food. Another thing I could recommend is the lemonade. I didn't ask for it, but it tasted like it was home made. Staff (Tiffany mostly) was wonderful and was always ready to help out, even they were VERY busy. Location is perfect. All in all a 5-out-of-5 experience.

Nearly bulletproof

By NYC-G-Unit |

We live in the neighborhood and this continues to be one of our favorite places. The people, the atmosphere, the food.. we're always enjoying ourselves. When Angelo greets his customers with a smile upon entering, you know you're in for a good experience.

Authentic Greek!

By Nicola B |

What a find - we had to cancel a reservation for another restaurant in New York due to the craziness of Halloween and although this restaurant was very busy they soon found us a table. It is true you do have to wait for your food but the staff are very attentive and Greek food should be taken at a leisurely pace anyway. We started with the tzatziki and taramasalata and gorgeous hot pitta bread with olives. We had the specials for mains and all were as described by our waiter. Great evening especially with the entertainment of seeing some incredibly inventive Halloween costumes outside while we ate. Would return here again when back in NY.

Excellent food, good atmosphere

By PLW1358 |

Village Taverna is located in the Village near Union Square and NYU. I dined there twice for dinner on recent visits to NYC and had excellent food and service both times. Unlike some NYC restaurants, the wait staff is attentive and willing to explain menu items to you. The highlights for me are two of the warm appetizers the OCTOPODI a grilled octopus salad which has pieces of nicely grilled octopus, sliced ripe grape tomatoes, peppers, onions and a wonderfully light dressing, and the KEFTEDAKIA KOKINISTA - meatballs made with ouzo, herbs & spices baked in a light tomato mint sauce. Everything is well spiced and delicious. Bring some friends so that you can share and get the broadest array of tastes. I would skip the dessert as the Baklava is just okay.

Delicious Lunch

By DnCspire |

A friend and I stopped in for lunch with our daughters. We had an incredibly delicious meal. Service was excellent and the cost for lunch was very reasonable. I had PEI mussels in an incredible broth. Could be the best mussels I've ever head. The tzatziki was absolutely amazing. Definitely worth a trip.

What a disaster

By Chris474759 |

Placed an order at 8:20 pm. Seamless said arrival 8:45. It's 9:50 pm. I have to go to bed. I have a life. I've been on the phone with them twice, both times assured order is on it's way. Do not order from here.

Lovely escape from NYC

By Jennifer S |

The management does a great job of welcoming everyone into this open and airy restaurant. The whitewashed walls, wood paneling and open space make you feel like you've stepped into a temporary vacation in Greece. The food is good - highly recommend the gyro platter and the saganaki. Lots of flavor in everything; the hummus is a little drier/chunkier than I usually like - but otherwise everything is spot on. And the warm pita is wonderful!

Kali Orexi (Bon Appetit)

By Howard F |

This unassuming looking place serves really good food. The salad was fresh and large. My lamb chops were delicious;my companions enjoyed their moussaka. The baklava was very good. Our server was patient, informative and funny in that big-city, slightly wise-guy style. I'd go back anytime I find myself in the East Village.

Dinner with husband

By happyperson18 |

We had an excellent meal there Friday night. Started with spinach pie, eggplant appetizer and chopped salad. All were wonderful but chopped salad and eggplant were standouts. Also had the chicken kebab platter and that was excellent as well. This is a wonderful choice in the village.

Excellent Meal

By Rhian01 |

We stumbled across this restaurant on a snowy evening after seeing a show at the nearby Astor Place Theatre and were not disappointed! The food was great, very generous portions and delicious tasting. Traditional Greek dishes and something to suit everyone. This place has a lovely laid back atmosphere with great staff and very reasonably priced. Definitely recommend!

Lovely place, not so grt food.

By jyoti p |

The fried calamari was too rubbery. The pita & olive oil that came right at the start were great. My husband felt the beef in the dolmades was barely there. The restaurant has a great location & is very tastefully done up.

Wonderful

By Al M |

Wine + Moussaka + Balkava = A little bit of heaven! This restaurant is on a corner with tall GLEAMING CLEAN windows for watching the world go by... nice spot.

Nice place, uneven food

By JaxAmerican |

The corner spot, high ceilings, and big windows are very enjoyable, and the service was attentive, so I wish I could say that the food is awesome, but it just isn't. We were early for dinner, having to be somewhere at 7:15 (!) and noticed that the place didn't really fill up until after 6:30. There are lots of locals, judging by the host's greetings, so you'd think it must be a real find. We had two appetizers and one entree - make your own tapas. One appetizer was a special, watermelon and fried cheese, and the other was spanakopita off the menu. The entree was pork souvlaki, on the theory that you should order something you'd never make at home. The presentation was fabulous! The watermelon and cheese came in rectangular prisms stacked alternately and drizzled with honey. I wanted to take a pic but DH frowned. The watermelon was great, but the cheese, um, not so much. The spanakopita was completely wonderful, highlight of the meal, light, savory, awesome ginger sauce. Huh? I'd think the special should be doing that job. And the pork - oh, no. Parts of it were not cooked through, so we left them to the side (time at a premium, remember?). But the rice and the yogurt sauce and the light little greek salad on the plate were delightful! So, very uneven. I'd suggest going early and getting a suite of appetizers. We saw their regular greek salad going by to another table and it looked mouthwatering. If you don't get the ridiculous entrees you can make a reasonably priced meal; most of the appetizers and the sort of ordinary entrees are about $15, and the wine we had was $8 a glass, so if properly planned you could make a nice meal for two under $75, which means it's worth a look. And get the spanakopita!

Great Greek

By Dave G |

A very friendly restaurant where the owner always provides a warm welcome, Village Taverna has excellent Greek fare at reasonable prices. All dishes are consistently strong in a classic old school Greek authenticity. Our favorites are the octopus, lamb gyro and any of the seafood dishes. You cant go wrong.

Good Greek

By Jenny V |

We are visiting from Australia with friends and were recommended this restaurant from a local from New York. It was quite busy when we went but the service was still quite good. Beware of the servings. They are quite large. A couple of people on the table shared the mixed grill and that was substantial enough to fill them. We found all of the food to be very tasty and the prices were not expensive so a good night out.

Unpleasant

By monamukherji |

Not so warm experience I would say. We were two of us and wanted to sit on the side walk, front side but the waiter, Paul insisted we sat on the adjacent side. The table and chair were on an uneven surface so seating was uncomfortable. My husband enjoyed his food (Mousaka) but mine was average. The pita bread was not that great and I don’t know why it was served with the drinks while I had asked him to get it with my food (Tirokafteri). He made no attempt to understand whether we understand the cuisine. So, when the food arrived, it was just a dip kind of thing! I didn’t know how to react when it came. We asked him to get some bread rolls, they never came. Anyway, we finished eating and then another waiter came to clear dish and he was too loud with the cutlery. I told him to do it quietly, he just dumped it all there and left!! That was extremely RUDE!! Sometimes, I wonder if it’s because we are Asians.

It's all Greek to me and I love it

By Helene V |

Living in the neighborhood we visit the Taverna at least 3 times a month. This has therefore become one of our favorite regular "go to restaurant". We have never been disappointed. The food is authentic, prepared with the freshest ingredients and it is served by the friendliest Greek waiters. I particularly recommend their octopus salad which is extremely tender, their "dolmades" (stuffed grape leaves),homemade bread and local Greek wines. It's a large restaurant and can be a bit noisy at times but hey, it's New York !

Family Owned Gem

By curlsgirl |

I happened to be its first customer with my husband. The staff was so excited and hospitable that they gave us any dish on the menu for free and brought out many of their favorites. We are weekly customers and plan to remain loyal to them. I reccomend the fine selection of cheeses, such as the Graveira Kastelini, and their gyros. If in the village, this stop is a must!

Deilige og store posjoner

By Bente |

We were nine people that were hungry and thirsty. And boy, did we get a lot of food and drinks. Chrispy vegetables, good red meat/ chicken and vegan for our vegan girl. We did not have room for dessert and coffee after a hug dinner. Recommended for families and students. A lot of good and healthy food.

A real lunch time find

By Peter H |

We took a chance and chose this restaurant at random having seen it had a good fish options. It was late for lunch by New York standards but the restaurant was busy, it seemed mainly with locals. We chose to share a Black Sea Bass on the bone which was plenty big enough for two and perfectly grilled. We drank the dry white Greek wine recommended by our very attentive waiter which was very good. Overall a great experience for a leisurely lunch at a sensible price.

Fake Greek

By HLLIII_10 |

On a recent pleasure trip to New York City with our family, while in Greenwich Village, we stopped in the Village Taverna on University Place to get some Greek pasteries to go. My wife is Greek, we have vacationed in Greece and are very familiar with Greek food, real Greek food...something the Village Taverna apparently does not serve! Although pasteries looked 'authentic', all were missing key ingredients which resulted in a very bland taste. For example, the baklava lacked both walnuts and honey. Although the prices charged would suggest authenticity, less expensive nuts and sugar water were substituted. Very disappointing to say the least! If you are familiar with, and enjoy good Greek food, this is not the place to go.

Good surprise

By Jean-Philippe M |

All themes in New York even a very good Greek restaurant. Really Greek menu and for what I have tasted or seen, home cooking like excellent Moussaka or fresh fish of the day. I recommend to change

Go with an appetite!

By Lisa J |

This was a great find! I had never been to Village Taverna so I did not know what to expect. From our host, to the server, to the food, everything was great. Make sure you have an appetite because the portions are large. We ordered the humus as an appetizer but would have been fine with the olive oil and bread that they serve. I had the chicken soulvaki that came with a salad and lemon potatoes. None of us were able to finish our food and it was all exceptional. It's on my list to eat there when I'm in NY again. If you like Greek food, Village Taverna is a must on your list.

So fresh

By marabel100 |

I had very low expectations but they raised the bar. A lot. Everything was delicious and fresh. Definitely my new go-to place on the neighborhood.

good for keeping your party happy

By susan k |

Perhaps not the most authentic of Greek restaurants, but Village Taverna's menu is extensive enough to keep parties of 4-6 happy. The food seems reliable. Happy atmosphere, family feeling due in part to the white tables/chairs. Casual atmosphere, probably not a place to go for a special occasion. We (party of four) got in without a reservation at around 7:30 on a Friday night. The staff was accommodating. Good smoked eggplant appetizer. The tsitsiki (sp?) was very good. Gratis soft pita bread and olives to start. Nice selection of beer on tap.

Good for families

By MABM917 |

My inlaws are Greek so I cook Greek and eat Greek. Village Taverna is a great place for families, honestly, and very honest food. My peeps had been here once before for dinner so when we met at brunch it felt like home. We ordered some mezedes and some salads. The Greek people were not satisfied that anyone had eatne enough but ths is typical. All good. 6 people at $135 including drinks.

Leisurely lunch that was like being at home

By MABM917 |

Came here with a friend but never had great food before. We ordered the tSaziki, spanakopita, horatiki salad and saganaki. Everything was delish and my friend walked away loving Greek food. We ended our meal with baklava which would have been better served at room temp but was still good. The servers and staff are super nice.

Nice Service, Mediocre, Bland Food

By STYLEONTHEGO |

Uninspiring food, but nice service. Strictly for the tourists and the NYU crowd. The food is neither authentic, nor is it truly flavorful. We felt a little ill the next morning. Won't be going back.

Large portions and large menu

By drlaz |

Very pleasant meal, including a bottle of good, reasonably-priced Greek wine recommended by the staff. Weakest dish was the mixed meat grill, enormous and by the end a little monotonous. Would have been better split by two ordinary appetites! Fish and vegetarian dishes all delicious. Too full for dessert. Notably attentive service and the kitchen was open late. Not worth a special trip, definitely worth a return visit if you are in the neighborhood.

Great Greek evening!

By Ange516 |

We thoroughly enjoyed our eating experience here. Our waiter -who was Greek himself - gave us great recommendations and had a wonderful sense of humour. They bring a sort of warm pita for starters and the portions are generous. We had haloumi and veggie chips for starters - especially the veggie chips were to die for. Of the two mains we liked the sea bass most - it was served on a delicious bed of fruity quinoa and just tasted heavenly. The gyros was ok - and it was far too much. We ended up carrying most of it and a lot of the greek yoghurt (also deliciously creamy) home. We had a really nice evening - the restaurant itself is spacious and very well designed, with high ceilings and lots of wood, there's also a take-away bar and all in all it makes for a very pleasant dining experience. We would definitely come back!

Bad experience

By arthshapiro |

In my previous review of this Greek restaurant, I praised all aspects of it. Last night's visit was most disappointing. Before we could finish our starters, the entrees appeared. They offered to 'keep them warm.' Would you like reheated tuna? We asked for replacement , they said yes then nothing happened. They just didn't care. Must have changed owners.

Very mediocre

By 784minimouse |

Pretty mediocre food here and ultimately just wasn't really up to scratch. The Greek salad accompanying my main looked liked it'd seen better days, limp lettuce, no olives, no dressing at all. The pork had little seasoning, and potatoes overpowered by lemon. I have had holidayed in Greece and you can tell when real passion, time and effort has gone into their dishes, this was lacking here and it was all a bit bland and so so. Service not brilliant, no one bothered to ask how my meal was, when I enquired about having a slight variation to my meal this was quickly dismissed, I had different people serving me, and had to wait ages and eventually had to tell one of the waiters if they could clear my starter away- a bit more attentiveness would not go amiss.

great food and service

By tarheel617 |

6 of us, adults and kids, all of us enjoyed all of our food. Wait staff very friendly and helpful, wine list was good. Salads were delicious, sampler appetizer plate also quite good.

GREAT SERVICE AND FOOD

By nancyyu2018 |

The Food is Amazing, and the service is great! I love the brunch. One of the best restaurants on University Place!

Wonderful evening

By jsoZsohr |

Had a lovely meal at this beautiful restaurant. Greek chicken special and the Filet Mignon kabobs were both delicious, great wine selection. Our server was prompt and couldn't have been sweeter. Prices are low for New York and the location is near Washington Square park- perfect place for a romantic post-dinner walk. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Great food Great atmosphere. Great evening

By Kevin M |

This was our first time back to the Village Taverna from London, England since May 2019 and it was as good as ever. We eat inside but saw outside dining has now been added. Busy inside and out but our waiter was very attentive and the service was excellent. The food was also excellent - grilled sea bass, lamb kebab and pork souvlaki were all great. All in all, a great evening and great to be back!

Greece without the jetlag

By Adventure Diva |

I stumbled upon this taverna while exploring the city. This warm and inviting place included the friendly staff who were prompt in serving my meal. I had their two specials and was not disappointed. Their appetizer of mussels simmered in a garlic/white wine broth was so generous in size, I didn't have an entree. A fresh salad of kale, roasted squash, pomegranate seeds and garnished with fresh feta finished my meal.

Great saganki and more!

By George W |

Do not miss the saga ski. Served with mint, and perfectly fried without the showiness of some places, it’s simply delicious. The wait staff is very friendly and the location is great for access. It’s a favorite with locals but as yet undiscovered by the tourist crowd. They have a decent wine selection and the food is outstanding. What more do you want?

We loved this place!

By nhlaker1961 |

The service was outstanding and so was the food. The atmosphere was bright and sunny and inviting. There is a wall of windows that bring the outdoors inside. The three of us shared the Domatosalata vine ripen tomatoes and red onions seasoned with oregano & extra virgin olive oil. We also tried the Lamb-Beef Gyro and the shrimp skewers. All we prepared perfectly. The desserts were super good too. We will return......

Very Satisfactory Lunch

By ItalyLovers4Ever_10 |

We had the rather rare occasion to be in the Union Square neighborhood and wanted a place to have a nice lunch. Having not been here in some time, we were surprised that there are many places to choose from, and many different ethnic cuisines, but I highly recommend the Greek food at Village Taverna. It is in a light and bright corner location, the service was very attentive and pleasant, and the food was very good, nicely presented and reasonably priced. There is an extensive wine list and bar available for those who like to liquify their lunch a bit. I started with an appetizer of keftedes (4 mini meatballs) which was quite good. My wife had the salmon burger, stacked high with avocado and lemon, which comes with potato chips, which was very tasty, and I had the chicken souvlaki platter, with four skewers of chicken, a mound of rice and salad. There was enough to take home a doggie bag. It's a nice brunch place on the weekend, with a separate brunch menu, but also their regular menu as well. I definitely will return for dinner.

Really Good Food Very Friendly Waiter Great Experience

By skierCalgary |

My wife, adult son and I had dinner here in late Sept 2012. We asked a young lady walking her dog along the street to recommend a restaurant in the area and she didn't hesitate to recommend this place. We were not disappointed at all. The food was good and the waiter was a lot of fun. Just a word of warning, I had the fish special, red snapper, and it was quite expensive. Menu prices are reasonable by NYC standards. My fish was about $10 more than the menu prices. Other than that surprise, it was an enjoyable evening. I would go back.

nice addition to neighborhood

By Schipa |

Food is pretty decent Greek, though somewhat expensive. 10 bucks for 4 little dolmades is a little ridiculous. They do keep the pita bread and olives coming and some of the other portions are more in keeping with the usual Greek standards. They serve most of the classics Greek dishes and mezedes and all in all, this is a nice place to drop in on every once in a while if you are near NYU. Now that Gus' Place is gone--which was on a whole other level of Greek food--this is pretty okay for the moment.

OK its NY, but this is a great Greek Restaurant

By Douglas T |

We had a pre-theatre dinner here and had never been here. High Ceilings, nice simple decor. No crowded tables. And really good Greek food and Greek wine. The bread (flat bread) alone with the olives and a salad would be enough. We had a vegetarian Moussaka, and a huge tomato salad and could not finish it. There are 6-8 other things on the menu we would like to order so we will be back. A nice place near Union Square.

Airy with fresh, thoughtfully prepared food

By sidder |

Greek food is comfort food to me, and Village Taverna's avgolemono is perfection in a bowl. Also enjoyed the chopped salad and spanikopita. Thoughtful wait staff. My only wish is that they would interlace a little Greek music into their audio.

Good Greek food in NYC

By Kevin M |

Booked the Village Taverna to have a different food in New York as close to our hotel near Union Square. We all had good food - I went for the Lamb Shank Yiouvesti which was like a good Kleftico with feta cheese and was certainly a big lamb shank - no need for starters here! My family went for the Souvlaki which was good too and good sized portions. Service was good and friendly. Buzzing atmosphere although perhaps a bit loud which made some conversation slightly tricky.

Trojan Horse in Greenwich Village

By 1941traveler |

It looks promising; nice corner location, windows overlooking a nice street, the promise of Greek specialtiies..but like the Trojan Horse..the inside tells another tale. Skimpy portions that overpriced for what you actually get, and really mediocre food. Thimbal sizes pieces of chicken in the chicken souvlaki instead of char broiled chunks is just one example of the lack of authenticity. With so many good Greek restaurants in NYC you can make better choices.

Noisy good food

By TravelRover7777 |

This Greek restaurant serves fresh "fish for one" (livraki) or "fish for two" (snapper) that is tasty, not salty, and plentiful. There are many Greek eateries but this one is distinctly friendly and offers a nice selection of food. Salads are fresh and Greek wines are reasonably priced. $$

Good Greek Food

Good Greek Food, at a nice location. Nice ambiance. Good variety of drinks. Servers weren't very nice, but i would consider of coming back.

Very nice place for good greek food

By Giacomo C |

We went for dinner thanks to a friend's suggestion and we were positively surprised...the place is really nice decorated and welcoming, the food is absolutely fantastic, I'm not expert of greek food, but everything seemed so good and genuine! The lamb was awesome and really tender, and the salads were good too! service was also good and it was not too expensive...I surely recommend it!

Entirely satisfying

By john d |

Chicken kabob with salad and pita was just right on a sweltering NYC night. The space was a tad noisy but large, airy and conditioned. Wait staff just right, ...mostly there, but not in your face. They were good. I give it an 8.75. Might've given it a 9, but the guy at the close table next door couldn't stop whining loudly about life in general. My date n I know his recent NYC story. I had to wheel her out. She ate too much, too fast. Always does. Nonetheless, I recommend the Village Taverna if U want simple, nutritious Greek fare in a pleasant unpretentious setting. I hope they're still there on my next trip.

Excellent meal

By AussieStrategist |

Our meal comprised eggplant dip, greek salad, spanakopita and chicken skewers and every dish was excellent. Add a good choice of wines and it was a great experience.

Great Greek food

By mrenner625 |

We wanted Greek and this place did not disappoint! HUGE amounts of food, great staff and great food. The prices were not bad, but of the amount of food it was worth it!

A bit pricey, but enjoyed my meal immensely

By Rosanne D |

We had reservations for 6 pm (didn't need them, was empty when we arrived). Service was very good. Pricey menu, but then again it's New York and in a trendy area. However, the appetizers (special beets) and chopped salad (big enough for 2 of us to share), were very nicely presented and good. I had lamb chops...they were really good, perfectly cooked, tasty, nicely presented, about 3 or 4 small ones. Dessert was ordered, looked good, but I didn't partake. While I truly enjoyed, if I were paying I don't think I'd return. Friends were taking me to dinner who lived in the area and I accepted.

Outstanding food and excellent service

By steven L |

My best friend and I both had a Gyro platter on a Sunday night after seeing a matinee. We had done a lot of walking and were tired and hungry, so we stopped in here. It couldn't have been better! The service was outstanding, and the food was out of this world!

Great restaurant! The food was amazing!

By Alex P |

Just... WOW! The service was great, the food was awesome, the atmosphere was lovely! I don't know what to say, honestly, I was in New York just for a week and I missed the greek cuisine so i just walked into the first greek restaurant that I saw! I was really lucky! This place was packed but the servers and the cooks were amazing. The food came really fast. Our server recommend it us a greek beer wich I loved. If there's somebody that could tell me the name of it it would mean a lot for me! (Greek with a green label). Thank you so much for a lovely evening! My hat's off to you guys! Ευχαριστώ!

Excellent Octopodi!

By NoraExplorer |

Village Taverna My friend and I came here for dinner. The interior-exterior decor was beautiful. They placed fresh fish by the entrance without any fish smell. Good! Miguel, the waiter, was good at taking our orders and questions. The table pita was average, like most the other Greek places. We shared Octapodi (Octopus salad) to start. This appetizer was to die for, but I live to eat it! I would have ordered two just for my dinner. Then I ordered the organic chicken, and my friend had the gyro platter. My dish was fabulous! The chicken was cooked perfectly and came out juicy and tasty. My friend's dish was pretty dry. I didn't care for the Gyro much. I thought the taste was just average. The Octopodi was the best part. I recommend this and the organic chicken for your dinner date. After this visit, I came back with Hubby and our friends for double date and my lunch wasn’t as great as the first visit. I should have ordered the Octopodi again lol!

Never disappointed

By Shirley S |

After an exhausting day, we made it to Taverna . First good news...a charming lively waiter who treated us like family. We ordered and enjoyed wine with flat bread and olives. As the customers poured in, we were served our main courses and without any delay. I liked that there was sufficient servers to keep for food flowing and service constant. And the good was fabulous. We left relaxed and happy

Great Greek Restaurant

By Janice621 |

We had a great Greek meal on a quiet Sunday night in December. The food was well prepared at a decent price. The portions were large. The waiter very friendly. It was a great experience.

Great Start, so so finish

By ono2009 |

This place was really packed when we came in. They had a problem with our reservation, but eventually seated us. They started us off with warm pita bread and olives, which were really good. We ordered several different appetizers and wine, which were also, all good. The problem was with our mains. I ordered the vegetarian Moussaka. It was mostly carrots in a fairly tasteless béchamel sauce. The vegetables didn't have much flavor on their on. I couldn't tell if they were roasted. No lentils or other meat substitute. Mine didn't, but most dishes came with fries and salad, which we all agreed were the best part of the mains.

Mediocre

By davide |

Overpriced, overcooked, soggy pasta, tasteless béchamel sauce, things floating in my water, tables wayyyy to close to each other, but the atmosphere was generally alright?

Great food!!

By Moe811 |

Went here the other night and ordered several appetizers. Everything was amazing and not a bite was left to take home. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for amazing, authentic Greek food!

Excellent Gyros

By Ed C |

Very good greek food including gyros, tzatziki, etc. Desserts are very delicious. Excellent for lunch or dinner.

Popular, and worth the hype!

By dustythoughts |

We'd heard good things about this place, and it was always super busy when we walked by it, so we decided to give it a try. The food is worth the hype! It took us a while to get our food precisely because this place is so busy, but it's absolutely worth it. It's clear that the staff are trying their best during the pandemic, so please be patient. We loved the melitzanosalata, kolokithokeftedes, and mousaka! The space is on the smaller side, so takeout is definitely an option if you're not ready to eat in a restaurant yet.

Great food but a bit noisy

By Harri N |

Taverna has really good food and nice staff but it is a bit too noisy in my opinion. Well maybe it is not a problem if you go there with a bunch of people and be loud yourselves. :)

Worst "greek" food ever. And service ended up as bad

By WILMA |

We arrived around 4pm on 12-26-18. We were seated in a corner with windows near the bar. Nice views. I am detailing this so maybe the owners will know which "waiter" helped us. He was a young man with dark hair...Caucasian. He started of nice enough. Took our orders and disappeared. Anytime we wanted something we had to ask the bartender or anyone passing. We all ordered Musaka. We have different versions nationwide of this. But here it was HORRIBLE. 90% zucchini, no meat, nothing nice about it. It was in a deep super hot dish more like a pizza pie. When we were ready for the check we had to flag another waiter down. That is when we asked what happened to our waiter. He simply said he went on break. I replied that this is not unusual...but when it does happen they will let us know that they are either leaving for the day or going on break and introduce the next waiter...this was not the case. We were just abandoned and had no one to help us. If the service was even decent I would have given this place 2 stars...but he food eventually matched the very bad service. I highly suggest you go anywhere else if you want real and good Greek food with service.

Great Greek Gusto!!!

By David |

Frequently stop by for a Peak Organics draught with olives and warm pita. Always a delight! Friends recently visited from Florida and we enjoyed full meals.

Great Lamb Burger

By 1joanne-12 |

Went with friends to this very pleasant, friendly restaurant and had chicken souvlaki, lamb shank and lamb burger with feta cheese. The lamb shank was good but had a spice..maybe dill, that took over the flavor. The lamb burger was really good. No complaints about the chicken souvlaki. Everything was fresh.

Authentic Greek Food in a Pretty Hip Area

By mgargiles |

They have a decent wine list, with some offerings from Greece. Prices are reasonable, but mainly dined here based on friend recommendations. They gave us some warm bread, with a tasty olive oil dipping sauce. We ordered the Patzaria appetizer, which is beets marinated and cooked in a light vinegar & extra virgin olive oil. It was served with a very flavorful dipping sauce. Next, we had the keftedes, which are seasoned meatballs served with a yogurt dipping sauce. They were small like sliders, more flat, and tastier than the average meatball, with lots of tasty ingredients inside. Last, we ordered a special of moussaka bites, bite sized portion of the traditional Greek dish. It was good to taste the different flavors in small bites, and you could tell there was a heavy mix of different spices and seasonings. For main meal, the bronzoni (mediterranean sea bass) was served grilled, open filet, in an extra virgin olive oil and various seasonings. It was ordered deboned and the majority of the bones were removed, but there were still some in the meal. Overall, a light, flaky white fish. The fish was served with lemon potatoes, tasty served with capers and onions. As an additional side, we had the sautéed spinach with garlic, served with lemon, and it was a nice addition. Overall, a nice spot if you're in the mood for Greek/mediterranean food. You can order various spreads/hummus if you're in the mood for something lighter. The interior is relaxed, not fancy, but a little tighter. We would go back.

Great atmosphere

Ate here during our stay in Greenwich. Fantastic atmosphere, staff couldn't do enough for us. Waiters described all the food that we wanted to order which was great.

Greek Perfection

By mumofcutestuff |

We stumbled across this little gem on our way back from visiting Ground Zero, literally .....our feet were in agony and it was very busy but they managed to squeeze us in. Thank goodness! This was my Favourite meal of our whole stay in New York. I can highly recommend the beef moussaka it was out of this world and an excellent price. We would highly recommend you anyone booking in to dine here!

A taste of Greece!

By Susan S |

This was our second visit to Village Taverna. The first was in January, when we sat outside at one of their heated tables. This time was much more pleasant! There is abundant outdoor seating, much of it nicely decorated. Unfortunately, we were seated next to an artificial shrub, which we soon discovered hid a busboy station...so our conversation was periodically interrupted by the crash of dishes. To start we ordered the dip sampler (Pikilia), which includes tzatziki, taramosalata and skordalia, but we asked to substitute hummus for the taramosalata. The waiter sheepishly informed us that this would incur a $3.00 upcharge, as would any substitution. [He said in so many words that this wouldn't be the case if he was the owner!] This seemed ridiculous, since each of the dips when ordered individually is the same price. In any event, the tzatziki and skordalia were outstanding, the hummus less so. [My kingdom for a lemon!] I ordered the lamb shank, which was fall-off-the-bone tender. I know cinnamon is traditional in many Greek dishes, and although I'm not a fan, it wasn't overdone, and I liked it more the more I ate. I plan to enjoy the leftovers for lunch tomorrow! Our server was pleasant and efficient, and the busboy staff was especially attentive, bringing more bread and water without our having to request them. We did think it strange when we arrived and were asked if we had a reservation. According to Open Table, this restaurant doesn't accept reservations for parties smaller than three. Additionally, there was an abundance of available tables, which makes the choice to seat us by the busboy station especially suspect. Whatever.

Okay food, slow service

By LaChatNoir |

I always find it strange when you enter a restaurant, and are greeted by a puzzled look of "what are YOU doing here?" I asked if they were seating for dinner, and the man grunted, led us to a table, and then headed back his seat at the bar which he occupied for the remainder of our stay. We popped in for a quick dinner, it was early -- around 5:30 pm -- and despite letting the waiter know that we are in a bit of a rush to get uptown for a show, he took his sweet time with us. Food was pretty good. We both really liked the Sheftalia, a seasoned pork appetizer. And the grilled pita bread, complementary, was delicious. Since we were short on time, we ordered small salads as our main. But I don't think the waiter put those in until we finished our appetizer. Because there was a long delay between courses. The dressing on my salad, the Roka, was much too vinegary. It was nearly too potent to eat. And stung my lips. Ruined an otherwise tasty dish. My husband liked his salad, the Horyatiki, but didn't get to finish it because we had to rush out the door. Wished we'd done better research on the area and had a dinner locale in mind rather than stumbling into this one.

Up to a Challenge!

By LJS |

Picture this: freezing cold, hungry tourists driven to seek lunch in first available eatery...got very lucky! Service swift and charming. Moussaka, very tasty. Best of all, waiter and chef upped their game cheerfully when faced with unusual allergy. They rebuilt their traditional Greek Salad, and it was still fantastic . Their magic ingredient? Leftover homemade pita is shredded and quick sautéed in spice for added crunch. A lucky find for a finicky foursome!

Very pleasant "find" in Greenwich Village

By Trup |

I met a friend for lunch at Village Taverna, a place with which my friends was very familiar but new to me....it was a very pleasant surprise. The food was very tasty, the service was prompt and pleasant and the ambience just fine. The menu prices were certainly reasonable. So, what is not to like?! I would like to return for dinner and try one of several entrees that looked quite appealing.

Great food, a little chaotic and haphazard ambience

By Sean H |

We ate here twice in one week - once a Saturday night and again a Wednesday lunch - because we love Greek food and this neighbourhood around Washington Sq. The food is excellent and varied - portions are huge and one entree is enough for two if you have appetisers too. But the atmosphere can be a little crazy and noise levels make a conversation difficult. Serving staff were OK, but a little pushy with the menu. Overall, better than good but we've done better in Melbourne and SFO.

Just a couple.

By Larry G |

Decided to try it after talking about it for a long time. Glad we did, food was great, service was great, wine was excellent. Would recommend this place to everyone. Gotta try it.

First date night for 2018

By Caren J |

very simple décor, good location and distance from union square subway train station, excellent fresh tasting food and good portion

Excellent Food in a Great Setting

By Psychologyguy |

My wife and I had dinner at Village Taverna on a Saturday night in March, and it was a great dining experience. I ordered the salmon, which was perfectly executed. A nice chunk of salmon, accompanied by lemon potatoes. The big surprise: Although the menu did not mention it, the plate came with a hearty salad as well. Service was excellent, and the dining room was very pleasant (with high ceilings, plentiful windows, and an airy feel). Village Taverna is located on the Northeast corner of University and 11th Street in the East Village, one block west of the large Regal Union Square movie complex as well as one block west the massive Strand Books -- so it is very convenient and centrally located. Overall, a great dining experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fantastic Greek Food for Delivery

By Seeseej |

My son ordered delivery from Taverna and we had one of the best meals at home ever! We devoured the lamb, spinach and feta cheese, hummus and pita bread and meatballs. You can't go wrong with any order no matter how Greek sounding the menu.

Excellent takeout. Mixed grill.

By Allan |

Excellent takeout. Mixed grill. Chopped salad. Very fresh very tasty. Friendly staff during difficult times

High praise

By Haveblue |

We love Greek food and it is so hard to find. A young lady who gave us the name of two NY restaurants. We picked one that turned out to be her favorite and we could see why. We arrived just after opening. Good thing, it filled up. Excellent service, food, décor, and price.

Great food, but beware of customer service

By Susan S |

Visiting New York during the global covid pandemic, we are extremely conscientious about trying to avoid getting sick. When we saw this place had heated outdoor seating, we decided to try it. Tzatziki, dolmades with lemon sauce and grilled chicken with roasted potatoes all were delicious. However, our waitress was unmasked, so I asked if she has a mask. Her response was that they’re all vaccinated, so they don’t have to wear one. We should have left, but decided we’d probably be ok based on the limited contact we had with her. [Only runners - all masked - delivered our food.] We usually tip very well, and had she simply offered to put on a mask, we would have been extra generous. As it was, we chose to give part of her tip to the runner, who was surprised and appreciative. [Will amend this review if anyone in our party tests positive.]

Good Wine. Great Food. Great ambiance. Good waiter.

Went on a Thursday around 5; seated quickly. Restaurant filled quickly. Good service. Excellent food, both appetizers and main dish. Good wine. Nicely decorated.

Stuffed sweet red pepper was great

By cindynor41 |

Really nice, cute place. Food was pretty good... Not fantastic. But the sweet red pepper was exceptional. Very nice ambiance. Bathroom was pretty nasty though.

Nice meal

By lucycan |

First time here. Nice seating outside (on two streets) and inside including the bar. I ate solo at the bar. Great service was the bar tender. Food was very good and the Gyro Platter was plenty large for $20. I'd go back!

Village Find

By Antionio10 |

Surprisingly good traditional Greek dishes including the mousaka, lamb shank yiouvetsi, lavraki (sea bass) and various Greek salads. Service is efficient and helpful if asked. Lots of NYU students frequent this spot with good reason.

Delicious Greek Food!

By JacksBee |

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Village Taverna the other night. We showed up early in spite of our reservation, but we were seated immediately without any problem. Our waiter was very nice, and told us the evening's specials. We started with a large horyatiki Greek salad, which was delicious. Everything was fresh, and the dressing was very light. The greens weren't drowning in it like many other salad dressings. We split a large, which was big enough for four people! We then moved on to the feta filo, which was amazing. A warm block of feta, wrapped in filo and drizzled with honey. Perfect. For our main meals, I had the lamb shank, with orzo, tomatoes, feta, and spices. The lamb was so tender it fell off the bone. The combination of vegetables and spices was out of this world. My husband had the yemista, stuffed peppers and tomatoes, which he also said was excellent. Even though we were full to bursting, we had to get some Greek coffee and dessert. My husband had the Greek yogurt and honey, and it tasted like the real deal that we remembered from our trip to Greece. I indulged in the ekmet, and was not disappointed. Just a fabulous dinner, and can't wait to go back the next time we are in New York City!

Good not great !

By purple8293 |

Had dinner with a few couples. Restaurants interior is lovely, inviting. They put very good slices of pita and olives on the table , which were delicious. Wait staff was attentive, but not helpful. When asked what they might recommend, was told " everyone is different, I don't know what you might like" . Well that's helpful. Waitstaff not really able to describe dishes to help order. Consequently we got a salad which was average. Big chunks of Mainly tomatoes and a few cucumbers and green peppers, a little slab of feta. On the other hand , others ordered the chopped salad and it was wonderful. Would highly recommend it! The red snapper is for two people, but it could really be for one. Vegetable mousaka was disappointing. Lots of vegetables baked in a clay pot, which was fine, but it was overcooked and really had no creamy bechamel sauce! Restaurant is comfortable , and we enjoyed ourselves, however the food was average. It is close to the union square movie theater, so it is very convenient location.. Would probably look for another place, sorry!

Oompa!

By sophiegirl0814 |

Good Greek restaurant with nice beer and wine list. The soulvaki, grape leaves humus and traditional Greek dishes were very good. I found it odd that they offered Italian cuisine as well. We steered clear but may have been great. The octopus appetizer and Greek cheese was delicious. Be warned not full bar.

New go to Greek restaurant in the area

By foodie_bob |

We went out for a family dinner and all of us wanted Greek food. This place did it on all fronts. They are located near Union Square and take reservations which is a plus. Average size place so reservations are likely a good idea. They did have a small bar area with stools and a few folks were eating there. The menu has all of the things you would expect at a Greek Taverna. We started with a few dips with pita bread, grilled octopus(tasted great) and dolmades. Everything was terrific & authentic however I would have liked to see a few more pieces of octopus on the plate as it felt like there were way more veggies than octopus. For dinner, we had a few souvlaki, sauteed shrimp and vegetarian mousaka. The dishes came with salad, tzatziki (with souvlaki) your choice of rice, lemon potatoes or fries. We had the lemon potatoes and they were very good. There was plenty to eat on each plate. In fact we had some extra to take home too. They also had a good selection of Greek wines. We shared baklava! We will certainly be back next time we are in town. This place is a keeper.

Really really good

By Beth S |

Was walking through the Washington Square Art Show and walked in with no reservations. We were greeted very warmly. Restaurant is big and light and very clean. Menu is mainstream Mediterranean. We had a Hummus appetizer which was Delicious. I had lamb chops which I ate with no knife. They were that tender. Hubby had a roast chicken special. Moist and beautifully seasoned. We took home enough For another meal. The staff is very professional and gave us great suggestions. The meal was well paced and we never felt rushed. We'll be back.

Great Greek Food

Love the Peak Organics Seasonal draught beer. For a quick snack order the hot pita with Greek Olives! The best!!!

Great Greek Food

By Michael M |

I have been to this place for dinner 4 times now and the food is amazing. The pastisou, which I never eat in a restaurant only make it myself was really good. It was traditionally made. The lamb and orzo is my favorite dish, tastes just like my mother used to make. I highly recommend this place. After a nice meal here you can walk around union square if the weather is nice. The staff is really friendly and the place is clean.

Awesome outdoor space and service…food great

By Vicki E |

Very good food and I like the atmosphere. We sat outside and it was wonderful. Our waiter made great recommendations and everything was great. The portions are huge so be aware very easy to over order and/be ready to ask for a to go box. I had the red snapper which was spectacular. My husband and son both had the lamb chops which they said was wonderful. We started with the saginaki- awesome! And then the chef special app. Amazingly!

Excellent Greek food

By atlhonest |

Really enjoyed our meal here. Service, food and experience were great. Was good to get away from the more tourist areas and restaurants of New York and be surrounded by a lot of locals. Would highly recommend.

Hardly a Keeper

By Walter V |

We had decent apps, stuffed grape leaves (pretty conventional) and some sort of caviar spread apparently to be used with the table bread separately provided with (a very nice) olive oil, as no additional bread came with the app. Entrees arrived before apps were finished so we lost some of the apps due to table size. We each had an entree salad. Mine was effectively a Greek salad and the restaurant did the Greeks a service by not calling it that. I've had better in a cafeteria. My friend had some mess that arrived with a big thick round of a cheese of some sort on top, covered with a gross brown sauce. Visually appalling and practically inedible. Room noise was uncomfortable. Lots of loud talkers, shouters and shriekers with plenty of hard surfaces available for amplification. Other than that, it was a fine experience.

Good greek restaurant.

By Jesper A |

We had the Pastitio and the biffteki. Both was really good, we shared them. Nice and clean restaurant with good service!

Great food-go hungry

By wanttotravel |

This place had it all. Nice Decor, great staff, good prices, and great food. The portions are huge, so go hungry or if you usually order a starter to get full believe me you don't need it. They bring pita and olives to the table before your dinner. Wish this restaurant was in my city!

Nice atmosphere - acceptable food

By paxa |

We were here for a friend's large family event last Saturday. Good location at the corner of University Place and 11th street. Interior's bright and contemporary – high ceilings, natural wood block topped tables, solid white framed chairs with rattan seats, lots of natural light due to the corner location and large windows. Food is traditional Greek, ingredients fresh. There is a tendency to however overcook the seafood – both the salmon and grilled shrimps were too well done. Otherwise, very pleasant and relatively inexpensive with friendly and attentive service. Seems to be quite popular as well – by 7:30 the dining room's completely full. Would give it a 4 for atmosphere, and 3.5 for the food.

One of the best Greek food

By Abhinav |

I'm not a big fan of Greek food but this restaurant converted me. Service was great and bar tender was very friendly to new visitors (like me) and old patrons alike. Wine selection is average though.

Can’t wait to come back!

By Mackensie F |

Amazing restaurant - LOVED the chopped salad with grilled chicken - it was extremely fresh. Meals come with free pita & olives and pretty decent sized portions. Servers were friendly too. Can’t wait to go back! (Also very close to Union Square subway station)

Great for Greek

By PaceJapan |

My son and I were walking around the NYU campus looking for a nice place to have lunch. I'm vegetarian, he isn't, so we thought Greek food would suit us both. Lucky us, that we found the Village Taverna. We were seated immediately by Maria and soon after, our water glasses were filled and the plate of warm pita with olives in olive oil was set on our table. I decided on the grilled Haloumi cheese for an appetizer and a chopped salad, while my son had the yemista. All the dishes were fantastic. Our water glasses never got below half full before someone came to fill them. We enjoyed the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, until we had been finished for quite some time and had told Maria that we didn't want dessert. No one came with the check until we finally asked for it. Its actually quite refreshing to not be rushed out of a restaurant. When we arrived on a Saturday around 12:30, they were still serving brunch as well as lunch. So try out the Taverna and spend a lazy morning enjoying some great greek food.

Great food and presentation

By Stylelust |

Apologies to my food photo fans...I was there on Biz and could not muster the courage to shoot. Beautifully presented, generously portioned food. I will return as soon as possible. Gorgeous shrimp. Healthy salads and loved my hummus. Great service....sorry, no drinking at this lunch but the gals nearby were enjoying Rose so they must have a good wine list...another reason to return.

Deliceous Food

By Janet K |

This is fine dining for reasonable prices in a lively atmosphere. My favorite dish is lamb stew. Very tasty and good size portion. The yogurt is the best I have eaten anywhere. My husband and I eat here often and entertain guests. I even had a surprise party at Village Taverna and it was a delicious and lovely affair.

Great Greek Food

We met some friends here for dinner and ordered a bunch of things to try. Everything was good. They had all the regular Greek dishes plus more. Everyone enjoyed the plates we ordered. I would go back.

Greek servers and music complete the experience on University Place

By MABM917 |

I have been here numerous times. Today was for a late lunch bite. I had the melitzanosalata and some Santorini wine. Fab! Other times I have tried other spreads and mezedes as well as the grilled octopus. The Greek servers and music complete the experience on University Place!

A tasty and enjoyable dinner

By EllenWCL |

The food was excellent, as was the wait staff. I was there for dinner on the early side on a week night and it got a little noisy but not to an unpleasant level. Very nice ambiance. Have already recommended it to someone who does walking tours in NYC. Ordered hummus and while they didnt have gluten free pita or bread the waiter offered to bring some vegetables to dip.

Beautiful Place, Great Food!

By MsCollinka |

Went here for dinner with some friends. It was Greek Easter, so the place was hopping, but it always has a nice crowd. The staff was very nice and the service was great despite despite the crowd. The interior of the restaurant is spacious and beautiful and outdoor seating is available as well. We split Greek burgers as our entree, and while that may not be the most authentic dish, the menu offered a wide variety of traditional favorites. Definitely recommend this place for a nice evening out. A nice change of pace from the crowded and cramped restaurants usually found in the East Village.

Greece in New York

Great dining experience in New York City. A great wine list with freshly prepared greek delights. Dessert is a must.

Ordered and Never Arrived

We ordered here after rave review and the food never showed. We waited over two hours and called 3 times. The restaurant could not track down the order and they claimed it was not their fault. No redelivery or anything.

Not a notable stop.

Greek cuisine cannot ordinarily be accused of being bland, but here they’ve mastered the art of reducing all the distinctive Greek herbs and flavors into symbols of themselves. Apart from the excellent Avonglemono soup, hard to ruin, the meals are very insipid. It’s hard to ruin a Greek salad , but they have. Very expensive, hard to get a reservation, and all due to location. Not a good value. Eat at the pizza place across the street instead.

Pretty restaurant with good food and relaxed service

By Been2Bagan |

Great warm appetizers, hearty salads, and nice ambience in a cheerful street near NYU. Service is slow, but maybe we can term it "relaxed" unlike rushed, crowded weekday lunch at most NYC restaurants. Worth a try if you like Greek food. Pricey, but then it is nicer and quieter than many village lunch staples.

Wonderful meal!

We were in NYC for a few days last week and met our friends for dinner here. There were 11 of us and they accommodated us all without any problem. Food was wonderful, we highly recommend the octopus and the lamb shanks! Also a couple of different kinds of fish and the sausages. Everything was amazing.
