We wanted to eat real pancakes and so we tried this place. It is a classical and original american diner in a very nice neighborhood in NY. Went there for breakfast and tried pancakes, eggs and bacon. Plates are very big and pancakes are huge! I have had better pancakes in my life, but service and price will make me come back. Service is nice, fast and always smiling. Price is good for the place and the quality. Quantity is a lot! Recommend!

It was cold as hell outside - 11 degrees. The staff was friendly, sat me far away from the door and kept the hot coffee coming. Professional and friendly staff and the food was terrific. Thank you!

It might be out of convenience, but this is our go to spot for breakfast or late night! It is quick and clean and the servers are all very nice!

A typical NYC old school dinner. The traditional wide selection of whole typical American breakfasts including average coffee... Very efficient and reliable service.

We debated about having the pancakes - they looked yummy but oh, the calories, so we went with eggs, home fries, toast, and bacon for my husband. It came with juice and coffee or hot chocolate and we both left full for only $17 plus $4 tip. Where can you eat in Manhattan for around $20 bucks? The atmosphere has a pleasant neighborhood-feel and staff are friendly. Highly recommended! Our two non alcoholic drinks at Rockefeller Center cost almost as much as our breakfast this morning! Plus walking around the village is pleasant too!

There are so many places in the village that are amazing this is not one of them. We ordered food for three people last night. Delivery time was about 30 mins. I called after I finished my soup and the very rude person on the phone told me my order went out an hr ago . One no it was made an hr ago it was delivered 30 mins ago. I ate my salad and soup 1st when I tasted my main course it was terrible it was old and had signs of frost bite and tasted like a dirty old refrigerator. I call to say this and I am told too bad and hung up on. My mom has lived in the area for over 40 years we Used to order from there all the time. $17.00 diner in the trash or I could say the soup and salad were not worth the price of the meal. A big Shame On you. Eat in is prob better. Beware of takeout or delivery.

A breakfast which set us up for the day! Didn't think I would finish it, but it all went. Friendly staff, speedy service. Not a healthy breakfast but delicious all the same.

BLT wrap was giant, tons of bacon. The loaded potato was amazing. Everything was fresh and came out within minutes, even at 8:00 on a Friday night. Staff was mostly super friendly. Bathrooms were a mess, my only complaint. When I informed a staff member, he didn't seem to want to be bothered. Outside of that, all was well.

Gigantic portions, really friendly service, and a real diner - what more could anyone want in the heart of New York?

Amazingly fresh pastrami, stacked as high as the tasty corned beef on my wife's sandwich was served with a crunchy large dill pickle and an icy cold glass for the beer. Ok so we had 3 icy cold beer! And the bill was under $35. In the Washington Square/Greenwich Village area of NYC, among the thai, falafel, sushi and Dunkin Donuts, we discovered this gem at 4th Street and 6th Avenue. This diner is worth the walk (if you like a little trek) or a subway ride from Times square. It seems also to be a Hop On Hop Off stop. And yes, they have a diner menu that doesn't quit. An excellent rating is for the diner, don't expect linen and silverware, but do expect the best corned beef or pastrami on toasted rye that you have had, anywhere.

Stopped in for breakfast on my way to NYU, and was amazed to find that the breakfast special included coffee and juice -- and they had unsweetened grapefruit juice. The food was the usual diner food.

Husband & I ate breakfast at the Washington Square Diner 3 times while vacationing in NYC. We stayed around the corner & even though our hotel had a free continental breakfast we ate here several times. The brioche French toast came highly recommended so that’s what we had. It was wonderful. Perfectly cooked with choice of meat & 2 eggs. Crispy bacon was thick sliced & delicious. Service was quick & efficient. Cost was nominal. Portions are huge! Consider sharing. Highly recommend this place.

We had breakfast here and the food was very tasty, I had some pancakes and my partner had the omelettes. Both were a big sized portion and came with complimentary water on arrival. However I did find the service slow and the waiter didn't have the same passion as many other waiters/waitress. I am also someone who is keen on hygiene and there were some simple rules which were not followed. Due to my strong hygiene beliefs I would not return.

I love trying different places for breakfast. I was in NYC for just a weekend and we had a lot of fun having breakfast there. Our waiter was great, service quick, food good and prices are reasonable. Wish I had been able to see how their lunch was. Very casual and good place to take kids to eat.

Husband, teen son and I discovered Washington Square Diner on a recent spring break college tour of NYC. Our hotel was down the street and we needed a quick, fast, inexpensive dinner after flying cross country that day. This was the place! Food: they serve breakfast all day (we returned for breakfast in the morning twice!), though the morning menu has more traditional options. Eggs are well cooked, potatoes are good. Son had the hot dog and loved it. Service: Really fast. Coffee was a bit slow coming out but once you ask for more, it's right there. Price: Also a bonus. We considered this a value meal. Great food, quick, no wait for table.

I don't eat at diners except for this one, because it is the magician's hang out spot after the Monday Night Magic show ev ry Monday at the Player' Theater nearby. Their vegetarian Panini is good enough for me to order, even though they are large and even though I already ate earlier. They also have good onion rings. The cherry and blueberry pie is only average, and I would not get again. They have people coming in, even fairly late, so must be doing some things right. Come by after 11 PM on most Mondays, and you will probably see magicians in the front corner, and maybe get to see a few tricks performed.

My partner and I came upon this diner purely by accident. It ended up being a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere was upbeat and the staff was friendly and efficient. I ordered the french toast with a side of bacon, and my partner ordered a typical two egg breakfast platter (with bacon and homefries). Our bill came to just under $30 (not including tip). Not bad for a NYC establishment. Would definitely eat here again. The menu seems to have a wide variety of options to cater to everyone's needs.

This place was good. Not as good as the waverly in my opinion, but it was decent. Their best dishes are the Greek dishes and breakfast dishes. At 11pm this place was full of construction workers, cops, nyu students, a couple folks from the neighborhood, and then there was us tourists. Ha. Good meal and I'm happy with the prices here. Will visit again.

Breakfast here was wonderful!! Nice little, clean diner. Literally steps from the subway exit. Waiter was great, food even better! I had the western omelette and it was one of the best I've had! Prices were reasonable too.

We were a group of 7 for Saturday brunch. They were very accommodating to our group and our many requests for extra items and refills. Service was typical diner, friendly with an edge. Food was really good with lots of items on the menu. I'd happily go back again.

We stayed in an apartment in Greenwich for 10 nights in Feb which was opposite Washington Square Diner. A very typical diner open 24hrs, good burgers and chips but more importantly, good hot chocolate. We started each & every day with a takeaway before we began our day if walking around and exploring.

This was a random stop for us on a walk downtown - not a bad choice as it turned out. You're kept topped up with water (liked that) although the waiters do need to relax a little - a couple did seem to rush about when there was no real need - friendly and helpful though. Portions are HUGE! Couple of chicken sandwiches - must've been half a chicken in each! Great fries and burgers looked good. Not expensive and nice place to sit with plenty of booths and you can a fairly open view. Pretty clean and has a nice comfortable feeling being in here.

Popped in to this tiny place for breakfast and so glad we did. Quick friendly service. French toast to die for and home fries as good as anywhere.

Full scale NY diner with extensive menu. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night. The diner is open 24/7. Breakfasts are great as is lunch. Portions are large and service if , friendly, fast and professional.

After spending several days near Times Square, we hopped off the bus tour here and had a fantastic lunch! Portions were huge, quality was good, and price was very affordable. Service was quick and courteous - we couldn't have had a better experience.

Always works well for a breakfast pit stop. Portions good size and value, if a booth style old fashioned diner is what your after, this ticks the boxes.

Wonderful authentic American diner. This is the place to go, If you want the Real deal. Service very nice and quick and Food so tasteful and large portions. Don’t miss out!

We stopped in about 8:30 pm on a Friday night after a long day of sightseeing. The place was busy but we were seated immediately. The prices were very reasonably considering how much food you get. If we had planned better, two or three meals would have been enough food for our entire family of five. Everything we had was delicious. We would highly recommend.

I visited Washington Square Diner in March of 2015, upon the urging of a friend who used to live nearby. We were so pleased with everything (the food, the service, the atmosphere). The menu is filled with something for everyone. I will return.

Located near NYU and other Greenwich Village sights this traditional diner offers many selections at decent prices. Service is prompt and friendly. A worthwhile find.

Basic diner open 24/7. Right near the basketball courts in the Village, not to mention the jazz clubs and IFC Film Center. Has its own cast of regulars. Get something simple. Order with a New York accent. A sandwich will suffice. Great place for late night conversation. If you choose to sit at the counter you'll talk with the regulars and the cook.

If you go to Monday Magic Night in New York City don't miss the after show diner at the diner where all participating magicians and some of their friends come for a bite. Food is simple and good. Budget friendly. Great location.

We were looking for a diner and found the WSD by accident and it was a pleasant surprise. Agree with other reviewers that the brioche French toast was lovely and light. The other half had a scrambled eggs and sausage patties and went away happy. It was a good feed.

Very friendly waitstaff and service! Hot chocolate and cappuccino were very good. I ordered 2 eggs and it came with lots of home fries (there were a lot of them and they were super tasty!). The eggs were perfectly cooked and the toast was also good! My mom got the cheese omelet and said it was very good, and it's also nicely sized. Dad got the Ruben Panini and he said it was good as well! The Ruben was in my opinion a great buy, because the sandwich was very big. Brother got the French Toast, and that was also very good and very big. Overall very satisfied with our meal and it was an above average diner! Well worth the money for the amount of food we got!

This diner was a short walk from our hotel so we popped in on our first night in New York. The portions are massive and great value for money. Service was fast and friendly even when they got busy. We enjoyed our food so much we went back for another evening meal and breakfast on our last day in New York.

Tried this place for breakfast on a Saturday - not busy so seated immediately. Food arrived pretty quickly and we had no complaints, bacon & eggs platter, breakfast rolls, bagels & pancakes all tasty. The only thing was that when we ordered "regular coffees", they came with milk & sugar added already - the only time we came across this in NYC. We drank them all the same, we're not that fussy about how we take our coffee! Prices were about average for this sort of place - an old school, typical NY diner. Excellent location for Greenwich Village and Washington Square park (hence the name, duh).

We had been walking around Greenwich Village and stopped here afterwards for a snack. The menu choices were extensive and very enticing. We chose the strawberry pancakes and blueberry waffle. Delicious.

This is a gem! The best brunch we had during our US trip great value with coffee, juice, fruit salad and your choice of breakfast beautifully cooked too. So good we went back for dinner! Highly recommended

If you're in a hurry and looking for a quick meal without much concern for ambiance, this diner serves up acceptable food without much (or any) fanfare. The Greek salad is an old standby of mine, and the small size is MORE than enough as a meal (the large isn't even much bigger). Just don't expect to be charmed by the staff or clientele. It can be a kinda depressing place!

This place was great. Service was a tad slow but the food was great, albeit too much. We could have done with half portions. There were a number of regulars so this place has a local following suggestive of consistency.

One of my favorite spots in New York City for good old diner food, cooked just right, with great service - and open 24 hours a day. The menu is extensive and has all of the food one would expect at a diner - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and meal specials. Portion sizes are very generous, service is fast, and the staff are pleasant and cordial. The location is easy to find - at the corner of W 4th Street and 6th Avenue - a block away from the West 4th Street subway station. On today's visit, I had a late breakfast, and it really nit the spot. Highly recommended.

We decided to spend the day in the Greenwich area, strolling around and was looking for somewhere for breakfast. Our search was a little disappointing and in desperation and against our better judgement we settled on this diner, we were looking for something a little more up market. However, we were very surprised. The service was great and attentive, with glasses of water arriving promptly, followed by our coffee and orange juice. The guys ordered a Lumberjack Breakfast, which was HUGE!!! Plenty of eggs, bacon, sausage and a stack of pancakes. I ordered Eggs Florentine, which came with half a plate of potatoes and was delicious, and my sister ordered the Fruit Salad, a variety of different fresh fruits and plenty of them. This was an excellent breakfast and great value for money and would recommend going there again.

This diner is your good, typical NYC diner. The have a huge menu that served breakfast anytime which is why I go here. The Bacon and Cheese omelette is huge, served with fried potatoes and toast. A nice meal that will stick to your ribs. Delicious fresh squeezed OJ too. Good, efficient service...

No messing, no frills and serves its purpose. Decent portions but us Brits just don't need a plate of home fries with every! One for the blokes as the Mrs less keen!

One of my definite go-to stops whenever I'm in NYC. Yesterday's visit was no exception to my previous experiences of good food and good service. Menu has extensive variety with numerous choices for any type of dining. Service is friendly and prompt. Food is prepared and served diner-style with ample portions. Nice selection of fresh desserts. Clean restrooms. Prices are decent for a NYC eatery - not cheap (nothing is these days) but they definitely provide value for money. Service is friendly. Overall a nice dining experience, especially if one is hungry. Just a few steps from the W 4th St subway station (6th Ave/8th Ave lines) and a short stroll to the Christopher Street station (#1 line).

We came across this place while walking around and stopped in for breakfast. The food portions are large and the food is good and we were served very quickly after ordering. Breakfast potatoes were a little mushy but the eggs, toast, bacon were fine. The servers were very hard to understand. There were two there and they seemed to alternate coming to the table. One was friendlier than the other. When I went to use the bathroom before we left, the toilet was taken apart so I asked the less friendly waiter if the bathroom was out of service and he mumbled something about the person who'd been in there was just cleaning and that it was fine to use. I'm not sure if he was implying I should put the toilet back together myself or what. Someone else came back shortly though and finished up whatever it was they were doing in there which was good since this place only has a one stall bathroom. This place was average. I don't know if I would ever visit again. Food was ok but the service was not the greatest.

Oh dear. Where to begin? Our friend in the West Village recommended this restaurant as a pre-theater standby but then again she doesn't dine out very often. Not sure if this was an off night but everything - especially service - was absolutely terrible. The place at 5:30pm on a Saturday was not very busy so I can't blame the dire service on them being slammed. The waiters seemed more interested in conversing among themselves then taking orders or checking on the diners. When you have to get up and run down someone to take an order, refill coffee, inquire as to how the meal is, or bring a check I'd say that's a service problem. But the service was not as big a problem as the food. How can you screw up a BLT? Answer: By serving burnt, refried or deep fried bacon left over from breakfast.Who knew there could be such a thing as stale bacon? Would have sent it back if a server had actually come back to ask. And friends who ordered the steamed vegetable plate were given a list from which to choose. The waiter very conveniently omitted the fact that the green beans were canned, not fresh. $12 or $13 for a plate of canned green beans, carrots, mushy broccoli, and overcooked squash. The only "redeeming" item was a half catalope ($7.00) they offered to cut into chunks. The prices were definitely not a bargain so I'd recommend skipping this place. There's a plethora of other restaurants or diners around Washington Square one would be better off trying instead.

This is a nice quaint neighborhood diner in Greenwich Village. You can just tell by the clientele that they have a lot of local regulars that go there, which is always a good indication for those not familiar with the business. The staff was very welcoming and pleasant. Coffee and water was kept topped-off, and service was not delayed. On weekends they have a special brunch menu (see photo) with quite a selection that comes with a choice of sides, as well as regular items. We ordered an Italian omelet (sausage and mozzarella cheese) and the baby back ribs. While the omelet was good, I expected the sausage to be more of an Italian sausage. Instead, it tasted like more of a breakfast sausage. Still good, but not what I expected. The ribs were also good, with the sauce being more on the sweet and smoky side. All things considered it was a good experience with good diner fare. It's not gourmet by any stretch, but the bathrooms were clean and I didn't get sick, so always a plus.

My wife and I visited the Washington Square Diner for lunch after a Sunday morning performance at The Players Theatre of A Christmas Carol. This place was busy but we were able to get a table quite quickly. Their menu is extensive with many breakfast and lunch/dinner items available. To describe this restaurant in one word - Outstanding! My Pastrami Reuben sandwich was the best I have had in years. A heated open faced sandwich of pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and mustard on rye served with coleslaw, potato salad and a pickle. Go very hungry or opt for a to go box as the meal was quite large. Without hesitation, a return trip will be made.

worst chicken with gravy beaded chicken frozen then gravy and bowl speggeti the worst food i had in usa chicken eas so bad who puts gravy on spegetti give bit a miss dont know how to serve good food just plain rubbish

...this food would taste good even when you’re drunk. How does a Greenwich Village diner that has been an institution serve such bland coffee? Ordered Eggs Benedict with the eggs poached soft; arrived well-done. Hollandaise on the side? Did I ask for that? Of course not. And don’t get me started on the burned, stale English muffin.

We were walking around looking for a good sit down place for breakfast and found the Washington Square Diner. Excellent food. Great portion sizes! Value is right on the mark. The food is delicious. Waiters are professional and always available. Very attentive to your needs. We even returned for lunch which was also amazing. HIGHLY recommend to anyone in the area looking for a place to eat!

This was a return visit and the place was as good as it was in 2010. I particularly liked the pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup.

Four in our party, we all got something different and it was all good. Nice atmosphere. Wait staff was friendly and catered to our needs.

On my first morning in New York I wanted a classic America breakfast, and that's exactly what I got. The coffee was fresh, the pancakes were fluffy and the eggs were delicious. There is good range on the menu and the service was friendly and efficient.

Easy, and something for everyone in the family or group. Reasonably priced. Very close to Washington Square and NYU.

There are very few NYC diners left. This is one of the best. Portions here are huge so you may want to consider sharing one entree between two people. On a Sunday night the restaurant was quiet. Service was very attentive. Prices here are reasonable especially considering the size of the portions. Prices compare to what you would find in a Long Island diner. If you are able to get a seat by the window you will get a nice view of a small park. This restaurant is a short walk from the heart of Greenwich Village.

If you are looking for a typically American experience, Washington Square Diner is the place to be. Located a stone’s throw from Washington Square Park, it’s a warm and welcoming place, with classic diner style: steel counter, leather seating and quick and friendly Service. The menu is huge, from classic pancakes and breakfast omelets to succulent burgers and hearty sandwiches. I tried the pancakes with maple syrup: soft and tasty, just as you expect. Even coffee is continuously filled, as in the best American tradition. Prices are fair considering the central location, and Service is fast and smiling. Perfect for a hearty breakfast or casual lunch between walks. Tip: Come in the morning to enjoy the typical New York atmosphere without much confusion.

We found this place while having a walk through Greenwich Village and were really impressed. It was our first day in New York and it was nice to find a diner and feel like we were having a genuine New York experience. The food was great and really reasonably priced!

We came across this diner whilst exploring Greenwich Village. We’d had a couple of meals in trendy restaurants midtown and been disappointed with the food & service - they should come here to see what good looks like. Friendly service, great freshly cooked food and very generous portions. We paid half as much and had double the quality. We had a burger & a chicken sandwich, no room for dessert! Agree with other reviews - arrive hungry! Overall an authentic gem of a diner without pretensions.

Not a family restaurant. Toilets poor . Don't cater for children. One portion size only. Food was plentiful but bland. Heap it on the plate style !

Stopped here for a quick breakfast ... Good pancakes, quick service and tasty food. This is a standard diner experience doing good food - could do much worse and have no complaints Coffee kept being topped up and staff were friendly

Decided to have breakfast here one morning on a recent trip. I was there around 8AM and there were plenty of open tables. Food was well cooked and served quickly. Wait staff was friendly and pleasant. Would much rather pay $9-10 for eggs and bacon here than $20+ for same breakfast at the hotel. Worth the journey. Would love to come back sometime!

Walked in out of the cold for some lunch: warmly welcomed, sat down straight away, coffee poured and order taken. Huge portions of down to earth food:endless coffee refills. Great value and highly recommended.

Visited this diner for breakfast whilst making our way to walk the high line. The best breakfast we had whilst on holiday in NYC. Would recommend to anyone - NYC cops in here having breakfast so you know it has to be good.

I'm a sucker for American diners and we went to this joint for our breakfasts. Great food, fast and friendly service, huge servings, coffee refills. Couldn't ask for more.

We had a brunch in this diner on a Sunday mid-April, service was fast, menu is HUGE, and you have plenty of options. I would recommend to go for the brunch for only $17.95 and you get fresh fruits, orange juice, hot beverage your choice of meat + 2 eggs + another plate of your choice (pancakes/waffle/...) Great deal for the area where everything is overpriced and packed on a Sunday.

Popped in for late breakfast. We had a seat in 30 seconds, coffee in a minute and breakfast in less than 10. Bacon delicious, eggs fresh, gigantic servings. Staff hustles to the clink of coffee cups in this historic diner. Hearty diner food, reasonably priced. This is where you go for comfort food!

Lovely friendly place with great food - corned beef hash in particular is great. Free coffee refills. Great starting point for a tour of Greenwich Village.

New York is known for its diners and it is known for its service. I believe this is probably one of the best diners in the city hands down. Huge portions await you and there is a lot of choice on the menu. I had a fix of pancakes and still dream about how fluffy and perfect they were.

really great NY Diner -fantastic choice of food, open 24 hours ,we only had breakfast -but all lovely

Called in here on way downtown for fantastic indulgent pancakes, huge, freshly cooked, crispy bacon and as much butter and story as you wanted. Coupled with fresh orange juice and refills of reasonable coffee. Delicious just defeated by the size!!

Expecially if you are a foreigner, and you have seen many american movies, wondering how it is eating fry chikens, bacon and eggs, pancakes and so on. This could be a great place to understand the real american brunch.

This place is a really great place to eat. The prices are very reasonable for the sheer amount of food that is given to you. The banquets are small and very close to the tables so try to get a table with chairs. The service is fast and kind. Great place....

Typical diner in the heart of Greenwich Village on 4th Street off 6th Avenue. The wait staff is professional and fast. The menu selection is large as is typical of a NY diner with many lunch and diner specials. Portions are large and prices are inexpensive. Mostly I come for breakfast or brunch. My eggs always arrive just the way I ordered them and the hash brown are crispy and include onion and green peppers. The tuna fish is very good as well, which is one of my favorite sandwiches. If you live in the area or are visiting this is a good place for an inexpensive and quick meal

New York has great diners in other parts of town. This was not one of them. They can't even get a sandwich right.

Great service, great breakfast, great atmosphere! Loved every second of it. Would recommend to anyone for a quick bite to eat and decent portion size

Can not rate this place highly enough. Great service and the food portions are really generous. Excellent value for money. It's a must for everyone

this is the usual dinner spot for me and helen. WASHINGTON SQUARE DINER is open all hours of the night and the great service never stops. EVER. we are continually impressed. AND ITS AFFORDABLE. thats a plus in this day and age. a favorite of mine is the waffels but its all good.

Visited this place as it was close to our hotel. Should have walked a bit more. Breakfast way too cold, omelets very salty, and lacking service. Far better options in the area.

Great little diner here! We enjoyed two meals here in three days. The only negative could be that there is SO MUCH food in a serving! Everything is served on a platter. Excellent value here!

Picked at random for breakfast on a walkabout in the Village. This is spotless, comfortable, with good food and prompt, welcoming service. Busy with locals which is always a good sign. Elderly liberal academics in corners debating politics. One of the better real diners we found whilst in New York.

Excellent locaion, fantastic food and friendly down-to-earth staff. We went to the diner late one night to seek some warmth from the bitterly cold snowy winter weather and we were not dissapointed. We felt like locals and were treated like family, awesome place which I highly reccomend!

First time here. Omg..so much food and it was amazing. Do yourself a favor and eat here if u are visiting NYC!

Met my expectations for a diner, atmosphere was easy and simple. Walked in to sit at the bar and got service right away. Ordered French toast w/ham and eggs. The kitchen was simple and they had a vast menu...lots of options if you aren't sure what to get. I was looking for breakfast and got what I needed. Ended up taking home 2 slices of french toast and turned out great the next morning for round two. The restroom was a bit odd as there was water on the floor...too much to just be from people's hands and the dryer was behind the toilet on the wall. Very inconvenient for someone who doesn't have much reach. Guess you could say authentic diner experience? lol

We headed out for brunch, not realising that in a Saturday this means lunch! Came upon this good diner as we wandered past many late night eateries that hadn't yet surfaced. Great sausage, good French toast, enormous stacks of pancakes. Not so classy as some if the spots further into Greenwich, but realistic and friendly!

My auntie who has lived in NY for over 50 years invited us here for breakfast just to show us what and where the locals eat. it was fantastic. I love my food especially breakfast and this please was my kind of place, massive variety and all very good value. Eggs for every occasion! There probably was a veggie option but not on our table, there was 5 of us and the table looked like a banquet. Very highly recommend this place and very easy to get to on the bus.

I've probably been here over 100 times by now (it's very close to my area). The staff is the biggest plus, a bunch of sweet, smiling men who will always make you feel at home and answer any questions you have. ALSO: the food tastes exactly the same as Waverly Diner a few blocks up except that Waverly Diner is more expensive and the staff aren't as good. You're better off going here (trust me on that). In terms of food recommendations, their pasta specials are unbeatable. I come here with my boyfriend often, we split a ~$15-$20 pasta deal and still have leftovers. It comes with a soup, salad, and huge bowl of pasta. Favorites are chicken marsala and primavera. And of course, their pies! A $5 slice of pie or cake is much, much bigger than anticipated. Paired with a coffee you've got a perfect late night treat. Keep in mind, too, that it's a diner so you won't get the highest quality food but for the price it is *unbeatable* Definitely recommend.

The portions were gigantic, which can be good. The omelette was cold, the toast totally under toasted. When I asked for toasted toast I received an abrupt response. Certainly improved toast arrived. On the whole the service was disappointing. An authentic diner minus the good service.

This place was actually recommended by our Sightseeing Tour guide. Sitting on a bus for 2 hours early in the morning, no breakfast...I was about to eat my guidebook and then I asked ....any stops nearby good for pancakes? The pancakes were fantastic, but the menu is extensive so plenty of breakfast/lunch choices are very good prices. The service was brilliant too, fast, efficient and regular top ups of coffee. Loved it.

A group of friends and I gather every so often at the Washington Square Diner and enjoy their good food and service and afterwards we enjoy a stroll through nearby Washington Square Park. Their chilli is excellent, great omelettes, soups and sandwiches. The Diner is located on 6th Avenue & West 4th Street. There's a tiny park adjacent to the Diner where one can sit and rest and enjoy the air if time to kill before meeting your Diner friends.

Excellent food, mythical apple pie and epic portions of ice cream to go with it. Quite a selection of alcoholic beverages for when not breakfasting 😊🍔. Service is excellent as well, the staff is very accommodating. Highly recommended!

My niece and I went to the diner for dinner on a Wednesday evening after a Broadway show. We were staying down the street at the Washington Square Hotel. It was about 11 pm. My niece has chicken parmesan and I had a BLT. The cole slaw was awesome! Service was very good. Food came out quickly and it was fresh and hot. Prices were very reasonable and they had a huge selection.

I have been a regular at this diner for many years and have never been disappointed by either the food or the service. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming and this is one of very few diners left in the city where you are offered a refill of your coffee cup with a smile. Washington Square Diner is the place I meet with friends for a long relaxing late breakfast or late lunch - better to avoid the peak hours. The menu offers many choices, also some greek specialties and the food is delicious.

This is a great spot if you want to experience a TRUE New York City Diner. Unassuming from the outside (the building is truly VINTAGE) and smallish on the inside. However, the menu contains exactly what you expect from a Diner menu. The service is friendly, but a bit frenzied and forgetful. Our meals were delicious - my over/medium eggs were cooked perfectly. We did order a Bloody Mary that had to be sent back because it was too spicy for human consumption. However, we all enjoyed our food, and would definitely return. Very much recommend this place!

We had the french toast and the bacon and eggs. Food tasted great. The french toast was amazing! Was a nice cheap eat for breakfast and would recommend

We stayed in the local area and this diner became our go-to place for breakfast and the occassional late night dessert. Great service, huge menu, really good prices. The food was always freshly prepared and huge servings. We enjoyed starting our days here before heading out for the day. We also had dinner here on our first night in NYC after arriving late in the evening, it was good as well.

Fast, good and reasonably priced, especially for NYC. It was obviously a local favorite judging by the clientele too. We had breakfast food all round and the hash browns were a hit. The pancakes had an unfamiliar color but were good. Bottomless coffee, attentive and hustling waiters, great all round.

The beauty of this diner is the way it combines traditional diner's food and ambiance with class. The menu has a great variety of everything you expect to find in a diner, eggs and toast and hearty sandwiches and all, yet the beautiful decor and (let's admit it) - the location, add a special twist to this lovely eatery.

This place offers a traditional American menu for breakfast or whenever. A good start to the day. The waiters friendly and the service quick and the food enough with all the trimmings.

For NY diner food this is a good choice. They offer a wide variety of food. Each that we have sampled has been good to excellent. Portions are large so consider sharing. The staff is helpful and the bathrooms are clean. The diner is close to Greenwich Village attractions and can be busy so plan ahead as it is not a large restaurant.

Pretty bad. Cheap bread used for the toast, "hash browns" far inferior even to the average Denny's. Low quality coffee. Rather disappointing; one must hope that lunch and dinner at the Washington Square Diner are better than breakfast. Better to go to Murray's for a bagel-- and there pay half as much.

This is one of my go-to places to eat when I visit Manhattan, which I do several times a year. Offers your typical diner menu, with pages of choices. Portions are large, food quality is good, service is fast and friendly. Great for late night eats. 3 minute walk to the West 4th Street subway.

One of the gems we found during our trip. Walked in since we were hungry and found an amazing place that has everything: cheap and good food, nice staff and all in a great location. Definitely recommended if you're in the area!

I always eat here when visiting New York City, due to the extensive menu, decent service, clean facility, and ample servings. Menu is typical diner - with a lot of just about everything. Portions are substantial, food is well prepared, and the service is decent. I particularly enjoy the burgers and the various breakfast offerings. Prices are mid-range (for NYC). Diner is open 24 hours a day and stays quite busy. One block walk to the W 4th St subway station. Enjoy!

This is a nice diner with great service. I can certainly vouch for the texas burger and the portions were very generous.

Diner where you literally can eat everything the whole day from breakfast to burger. Food is average, nothing outstanding but the portions are huge and prices are moderate.

This was our first time eating there. We really enjoyed this diner. The food was good and the potions were huge.

We were there Thursday with the kids. The food was really good (crispy chicken sandwiches, chocolate chip pancakes, and jalapeño cheddar grilled cheese), and the waiters were nice and attentive. And everything was very clean...except the men's room, which was a total stinking wreck, said Mr. Hawke. I'd give it 4-1/2 stars if I could.

We came here for a late breakfast and ended up with an eclectic array of entrée s. The service is GREAT. Water and menus immediately upon sitting down. Water glasses refilled a few times while we were there, too. Special order was not a problem. Bathrooms were clean. The menu goes on and on. Breakfast foods, soups, salads, sandwiches, fish, all types of dishes. We had eggs and corned beef hash, with home fries and toast; chicken fingers and fries; and Challah french toast. The chicken fingers were large and there were eight of them. Lightly breaded and not overdone. The corned beef was good (I was told). And the French toast was absolutel delicious and done perfectly. They served three large pieces. We left there with full tummies and we couldn't eat all our food.. Three hot beverages along with HUGE meals cost us $36. We thought that was very reasonable.

I like this diner, because it has a wide selection of dishes, I liked the sandwiches as a main course, and the piece of cake for dessert.

After reading a few reviews on trip advisor of the breakfast diner myself and my wife decided to visit for breakfast on the first morning of our trip to NYC - after which we visited every morning it was that good. The diner provided an extensive breakfast choice with every variation of breakfast platter possible. The service is swift and the standard of food is excellent - they also provide free wifi so you can contact your loved ones whilst away. Quite simply this is the place for breakfast as they have everything sewn up!

The server was nice but VERY spaced out. Took horrendously long to take the order. I had to go up to him and ask him to come over to my table. Told him I am allergic to wheat and can't have bread. He still brings over a bread basket. Talk about wasting food! Food was absolutely abysmal! Tasteless. Soup was horrible, never tasted spinach so awful and the grilled chicken didn't eve have salt. The portions are huge. So if you like large amounts of tasteless food, then this is the place for you.

Lucky enough to accidently find this great traditional diner after visiting the Ghostbusters fire station .We decided to eat and found a real treat. Excellent value and what you cant manage will feed you all day. The staff are warm and friendly and are happy to pack you up to take home. A proper place.

I'm usually pretty happy with any nyc diner, I had some great disco fries at a different diner during this trip but the corned beef and hash I ordered is a hard pass in the future. The hash was very canned & the hash browns weren't good either. That said the service was good and it seemed clean, the front booth seats are great for people watching if you can get them.

On the edge of NYU next to one of the small urban patches of green that dot New York neighborhoods, this typical diner with a large open kitchen is perfect for breakfast. The food is the standard diner fare--so stick to eggs of any and all hues, the service is efficient and courteous even if not friendly and the place is clean and comfortable.

On the advice of a tourist book, we went to this diner. You shouldn't expect a special atmosphere, but the service is very efficient. The burgers were also really good and the portions were large. If you're in the area, this is a good place to eat.

Nice people, nice food and really good prices. Breakfasts and smoothies are TOP! It is open 24 hours

Set back from 6th Avenue, buffered from the relentless cacophony of traffic and the never ending blast of Jack hammers rebuilding and repairing the city that never sleeps by a beautiful urban garden enclosed in wrought iron, the WS Diner is clean, has an eclectic menu, has an attentive staff, serves huge portions. The portions belie the rail thin population passing casually past the window. Perhaps they have learned to split an order rather than face the angst of busting the waistline or, God forbid, leaving food on the plate. The food is quickly placed before you and it is fresh and lightly salted so the seasonings takes front stage. A pleasant but not inexpensive experience.

I’ve not been here in a long time, had a craving for scrambled eggs and corned beef hash. Met with a friend who ordered a turkey burger, so we can catch up!

Great diner, super friendly staff and a huge menu. I love the no nonsense atmosphere, clean, efficient and orderly. Give this place a try for a great and affordable meal.

Found this diner when looking for lunch close to IFC. Service was just a bit slower than we would like as we were going to a movie, but it was clean, pleasant, and the food was good. Portions were very large, so bear that in mind if sharing is an option in your group. Extensive menu of sandwiches, paninis, etc.

I try to keep my reviews fair but this establishment broke all conceivable expectations. 1st the food is awful as it’s bland, thrown on a plate, and everything taste of the grill. The staff doesn’t seem to care that you came into their establishment which is usually alright for NYC if the food is good. The environment is dated but to be expected in a NYC diner. However, the seats benches are right at 90 degrees straight up. I walk by his place quite often and I’m amazed they’re still open. I’ve thought many times of warning people considering going in. I thought this would be a better platform. NEVER AGAIN!

Greta food, friendly staff and CLEAN! We had an excellent breakfast, served by friendly staff and everyone's food was really tasty

We just jump in for some food. It is a nice and warm place, with sizeable portions of food. Long menu line, and we have a special order and wasn’t a problem. Friendly staff, fast and nice dishes.

This is what a diner should be. Local nook and solid, well made food with a menu that doesn’t try to be everything. Jug and box wine on the shelf? Absolutely! No pretense and no nonsense wait staff who are central casting for diner workers. Love it. Will come back again and again. Right next to Hamlet’s Vintage, so it’s a good visit.

Friendly atmosphere in this typical American dinner, the staff was very welcoming, we feasted with the bison burger in deluxe version.

This is a very typical diner. The food is average, but cheap, and the service is quick. I have only ever had breakfast food there, so can't speak to any of the other items on their extensive menu.

We came across this restaurant by accident while strolling through Greenwich Village. Coincidentally, earlier in the day, we had been in Midtown and were bemoaning the loss of long-established, honest-to-goodness New York City diners and coffee shops, which seem to have been replaced by Starbucks, McDonalds, and other fast-food businesses. After looking in the front window of the Washington Square Diner, we both exclaimed, “This is the real deal that we’ve been looking for!” The interior has an original 1950s look, with lots of light wood paneling, and while nicely maintained, the tables, booths, and fixtures have been in place for a long time, adding to the charm and authenticity of the restaurant. The staff here are a brisk, highly-organized team, taking orders, bringing out food, topping off water and coffee cups, and so on. Every server whom we encountered was friendly and attentive. Food came out of the kitchen promptly and piping hot. The diner lived up to all our expectations. We felt that we were back in New York City in the 1950s. We had two lunches here, on two consecutive days. On our first visit, I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Giant Panini on focaccia ($9.99), which was a gorgeous sandwich with succulent chicken breast and rich chipotle sauce. “Giant” was an understatement: I don’t know how they could offer a sandwich this big for only $9.99, but I polished off every bit of it and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also enjoyed the house pot pie ($12.45), a generously-filled chicken salad wrap ($8.45), and a plain old cheeseburger, beautifully cooked to order ($7.85). Coffee is $1.85, and the serving staff make sure that you are refilled as often as you like. We saw many customers settled in with their newspapers or books, slowly enjoying their meals as they read; there was no pressure from the staff to eat quickly and move on. The diner is open 24/7 and was always full of customers when we visited, so obviously it has established a loyal clientele. We did not have dinner here, but we would certainly return for dinner because the food is excellent, the ambiance is cozy and welcoming, and the prices are reasonable. The West 4th St.-Washington Square subway station is just around the corner (A, B, C, D, E, F, and M trains).

We had a great lunch today at this diner. The food was very good with big portions. The price of the food it;s more than ok for New York City. The staff was great and friendly. Definitely coming back .

What a great find, visited after reading some reviews and wasn't disappointed. Great breakfast I had pancakes delicious and nubby had eggs and sausage. Great value. Would definitely visit again

Jumped in to WS Diner after walking around the Village on a super cold day! Heart set on some soup and sandwiches. On entry we were immediately seated in a booth ...moments later waiter came with menus...ask out drink order! Checking out the menu we found french onion soup and grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches..SCORE! Order taken and within a reasonable amount of time food was on the table. Huge order of sweet potato fries came out crisp and not greasy! It was all great! Wanted to go back during out stay but never found time! Will visit again for sure when in the area! Desserts looked amazing!

Really fantastic place, busy with workers but still felt a relaxed place. The French toast was really good, nice and thick. Decent price for New York. Friendly staff who kept the decaf coffee flowing.

We had lunch here twice on our stay. The deluxe chilli burger is great. We found this establishment to have friendly service and good food as we will return for lunch on our next visit to New York.
Not impressed
This place has been around forever, but I remember it being better years ago. We ordered quickly when we sat down, but then waited and waited for our food. It soon became clear that the waiter never put in our order... The food did finally come and my pancakes were just so-so. I would sooner go to the Waverly Diner near by.
