Best Meal We Had in New York!

By Vanessa_GoldCoast |

Unfortunately we only found this gem for our last meal on our last day, otherwise we definitely would have eaten here a few more times. Being lovers of asian food we were so delighted when our meals hit the table and were all superb and generous servings. We had thai curry, mango salad, popcorn chicken, calamari and sticky rice mango. As stated previously they don't take cards so make sure you have some cash. Excellent friendly and prompt service here too. Very popular. Don't miss this fantastic restaurant!

Decent Food

We were a party of 10, so we did have to wait a bit. The place isn't all that big. We had to wait for a few parties to leave so they could connect 4 tables together. My friend ordered all the appetizers. I don't remember the names of the appetizers but we had the Indian Bread, Toast and one other appetizer where you put meat into lettuce. They were all very good. One negative was with the Indian bread, they didn't give enough sauce. We also ordered the Hai Nan chicken to share. The chicken was very smooth and tasty. It's probably the best from all the Malaysian places that I tried. I ordered the white curry beef stew over noodles. This was pretty good. For the kids, we ordered a fried noodle and fried rice for them to share. The noodles looked very yummy. The fish head noodle soup is very good as well. Everything was very good. We probably ordered too much food but at least we got to try many things.

Tasty dinner close to home!

Found another great Malaysian restaurant in the heart of Chinatown! Malaysian food rock! Woohoo Wok Wok! We were served by Alex, a nice friendly and smiley waiter. I asked whether he's from Malaysia and he said yes. Go Alex! So I trust that he must have known lots of Malaysian dishes. I ordered sambal with seafood in a hot clay pot. This dish rock my world and I don't mind having it again and again. Super authentic taste of Malaysian food. It served with fried egg on top. This is another common old fashioned style in that part of the world where a fried egg is part of the final touch to an entree. Hubby ordered some dumpling to try plus Char Keow Teow, which is Malaysian style flat noodle with a tasty soy sauce. There're a lot of soy sauces in that part of the world so this is from one of those sauces. As long as it's good, we are good. Hubby couldn't believe that I found this great place for our next favorite place to go to. The restaurant is in the basement but this is not just another basement restaurant. This basement is super cute and clean. The entire restaurant and bathroom are clean. Visit while you can especially if you happen to be in the area. I meant visit the restaurant, not the bathroom. Well, visit both when you have time. Highly recommended for those who love Southeast Asian food.

Great food and great prices!

By tezzzka |

We love asian food and this is the place to go if you love it too! We got pad thai, red thai curry, curry coconut soup, vietnamese spring rolls, lemongrass chops and everything was great! Next time I am in NYC, I will come again! That is for sure!

No credit card

By Sima |

Food was excellent. We were able to get the spices the way we liked it. We got the lunch specials. I wound up taking some of the food back with me. We were unaware that they did not take credit cards. Luckily, we had enough cash. Very pleasant atmosphere.

Surprising!

By fredschl |

This is an unobtrusive down stairs space but the food shines most unexpectedly. Different than most restaurants in the area since it claims to be "Asian" rather than Chinese. The food is not only interesting but most excellent. Everything that we tried in the menu was good and tasteful. Recommended

Our pick in Chinatown

By Eswau |

I knew we would be in Chinatown, so I looked up several choices before we arrived. The variety of the menu was what made me pick this place. Nice, clean, modern location. Between the 4 of us, we got a wide variety of food - everything was great. Prices were reasonable as well. Service could have been just a little better as we had to ask for refills on our drinks a couple of times. Two wait staff, and only two tables eating while we were there. Wouldn't hesitate to return if ever in the area again.

A lunch time surprise

By Hilary H |

We stumbled across this in Chinatown. Met dome Asians coming out who recommended it.Its downstairs off the pavement and you can't tell what it's like from outside so it was a gamble that paid off. I had the spring rolls and wonton soup. Both were freshly made with mint in the spring roll. The wonton were homemade too. If I live here I would be visiting this restaurant weekly. It was cheap too and clean.

Wow, a real surprise!

By klkh2002 |

I only went to Wok Wok after passing dozens of uninspiring look Chinese restaurants in Chinatown so it was either Wok Wok or no Asian food. I was surprised to find it was actually a Malaysian restaurant. I spoke to the waitress who recommended the steamed chicken. I was a bit doubtful but went with her recommendation. Well, it was excellent! The chili sauce was also spot on and just like you would get in Singapore or Malaysia. Highly recommended- I will defiantly be back when again in NY.

Don’t Waste Your Money

By ianandmax |

We had high hopes for this place as it was busy with Asian people, however having experienced it I’m not sure why. The food was ‘okay’ - but no more than that with various dishes coming as and when, which they will tell you is the ‘Asian way’ - but as a couple who have travelled extensively in Asia that is actually not true and is nothing more than an excuse for a badly organised kitchen. My ‘Penang Curry with Pineapple’ had never seen any pineapple and was just bland. However the most irritating thing was the server who despite having delivered pretty poor service had the cheek to tell us our 15% tip wasn’t enough and actually demanded more money from us in front of other diners. We fully understand the reliance on tips in the US as my partner worked in a restaurant there for two years, but are equally aware that we are entitled to make a point with what we leave. Anyway to be fair we spoke to the owner who was not at all happy with her behaviour and instructed her to hand the whole tip back and apologised profusely. There are better places in Chinatown.

Affordable, excellent food

By travel4CEU |

Compared to other NY restaurants this one was affordable and the food was great. I got the seafood curry dish and it was so good. I just couldn't get those poor whole little squid into my mouth though. The server was so sweet, she (in her broken English) asked why I did not eat my squid. I told her that it was a visual thing and I just couldn't try it. She then went on to tell me about a special Chinese recipe that was excellent for pain and included chopped squid and pork. She took the time to try and help me and I loved her for it. Great food, great people. A small very busy place. May have to wait.

Great Chinese, Great Find

By Marco |

Great find so glad we chose the Wok Wok Southeast Asian Kitchen restaurant. Very friendly staff and the food was really good. There are signs saying no credit cards so worth remembering cash only.

Underground gem

By Talal J |

We were looking for a good restaurant at which to eat in Chinatown, and a quick internet search led us to Wok Wok. It's just below the street level and can easily be missed, which would be bad because you would really be missing an authentic Thai meal. The staff is very friendly and attentive, the food is delicious, even the desserts were great. I mean who doesn't love mango sticky rice. They also have a variety of products used in Thai/Malaysian cooking for sale in the restaurant, like red curry paste, fish oil, etc. Definitely worth the stop in.

Excellent, foodies welcome, Thai Chinese Malaysian fusion, bring cash (only)

By jennyrenny2 |

Delicious, cheap, different. It was worth our 40 minute wait and kinda uncomfortable seating to have such a unique delicious tasting of food from SE Asia. It's in China Town and located in the bottom level; i.e.: down the stairs from the street. The wine selection isn't that great, so do that s'where else, but the food is worth it. Best place in China Town (we were told by our local friends) (oh - we had a fish thing, and typical of *anywhere outside the US* it was served as a whole fish - but totally unique as it rested on the plate in swimming position (on edge) and the edible flesh was already removed and cooked with the veggies and sauce etc... easy to eat and amazing.)

Great food.

By Dan D |

In the middle of China town. Great food and staff was friendly. We enjoyed our visit twice while in NYC.

Excellent local Chinese Restaurant

By Marciahi |

I have been here a number of times and have never had to order something twice. Every dish is excellent.

Really to avoid...

By Bossylo |

Some dishes really leave something to be desired or even perplexing. They make no effort to speak English, which hinders communication. Last remark, the toilet was gross, with a nice leak that rejected the whole flush, I pass the details. I'll never go back

Very good

By EwanD000011111 |

We had the popcorn chicken, noodles, Thai fish cakes, dumplings, and the chicken satay we shared it between us and it was amazingly good then we all shared the sticky rice for pudding and that was great to. In my top ten restaurants ever. 👌

Efficient, well run restaurant

By MC8998 |

The prawn noodles soup was decent. Only wished there was more ingredients instead of more noodles. Nasi Lemak was pretty good. The restaurant is well organized and food came out fast and hot. Good eats.

Evening meal

By Liam R |

Lovely food and reasonably priced. We didn’t read any reviews before we arrived and feel like we stumbled upon a little gem in Chinatown. We highly recommend!

I recommend

By jcm |

This typical but modern and clean restaurant is very friendly. The staff is friendly and takes care of their customers. In addition, the dishes are really excellent and at a good price. I recommend.

Fantastic meal!

By AshikaDheda |

My husband and I recently had supper at this restaurant. We arrived at 7pm and waited around 20minutes for a table. But the wait was worthwhile! I had the prawn clay pot and my husband had the nasi goring (we both love Indonesian food) and were not disappointed... The food was flavourful and the portions were generous... I would highly recommend this restaurant - really worth the wait!

Different Chinese food

By Hansei Kai |

Wok Wok surprised me we asked for wonton soup, it was far away regular wonton soup, it has a different taste a little spicy, delicious though. Young Chow fried rice was superb. Only thing is you have to pay cash, not credit card accepted.

Disappointed!

By Sharon K |

The first one star rating I've ever written. Food is delicious here, authentic and well priced. Service is ok/good depends how busy the restaurant gets. All the wait staff work very hard here. BUT - as a popular restaurant, their signature curry beef tendon dish is ALWAYS SOLD OUT! How is it possible? Some of their other popular dishes are constantly sold out early in the evening too. I've been coming here since they first opened. I have been here everyday in the week for the last four months and that particular curry beef tendon dish is sold out every time. I arrive before 7pm for dinner every time. When the first time it happened, I was like ok, I was out of luck, but when it's the 6th time this happened in four months period, and this happened on weeknights and weekend-nights, it's a problem!! Maybe better planning is necessary??? It's so disappointing, as regular customers, my friends and families all travel a long way to get here for authentic Malaysian food and we get disappointed six times in a row. I don't think that's right.

Great overview of Asian cuisine.

By Filip W |

It's not easy to find Asian food so well prepared. It tastes perfect at Wok Wok. The place is clean and nice, ladies pleasant atmosphere. Waiters helpful.

Good Concept But Failed To Deliver

By AKrulzNY |

I like the menu selection, venue, presentation, atmosphere. They offer street food from Thailand, Malaysia & Indonesia. Restaurant like this one isn't common so that's its selling point. However, they failed miserably when it came to taste of the food. They must get Salt/MSG for dirt cheap cause they are overly generous with Salt. I ordered Empanadas and the filling was terrible. Tasted like something I bought from local grocery store. Pork Chop was sooo salty I had to send it back to kitchen for a do over. Roti Telur was just as salty. If they don't change the way they cook food, I doubt they will be profitable. It's a new venue so people are coming to try the new place but there are many people like myself who won't be coming back anytime soon.

Cash Only but vert good food

By Stephen F |

I have visited this place three times now and I have not been disappointed. The food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. This is a small place that you may just walk by but don't, once you find it you will be happy you did.

Delicious and affordable lunch

By James E |

We stumbled on this place with hungry kids. Staff were friendly and polite. We had to wait about a minute whilst they cleared a table. Menu was wide with lots of choice. Food arrived quickly and we delicious. Even the check was a pleasant surprise! It was a quarter of what we paid for a quick breakfast in midtown. Definitely recommend.

Amazing

By JupiterKLP |

My only complaint is that I didn’t arrive at Wok Wok with a bigger appetite, because everything on the menu looked so tasty! I ended up ordering the scallion roti, which came with a deliciously flavorful dipping sauce, and the hokkian char mee, which was one of the most delicious dishes I’ve ever eaten. I will definitely return on my next trip to the city!

Tasty Asian Fusion

By P B |

Wok Wok was a good spot for our group. An added bonus to this place was that they take reservations. We shared a variety of flavorful Starters and Entrees. The staff was friendly, but the service was fair.

Cash Only, Good food

By AKrulzNY |

This is a cash only venue so bring $$. The food is good and we enjoyed dining here. I’m happy that they toned down on the salt. When they first opened, everything used to be overly salty. You won’t be disappointed when you dine here. I rather not make any particular recommendation on dishes to get but do be adventurous.

Good noodles.

By Mary C |

Came with family for dinner. Good and tasty noodles but portions were small. Seating not so comfortable.

Good.

By Ingunn Ulland D |

Perfect for an informal dinner/lunch. The prices were reasonable and the food came quickly. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

Delicious Malaysian Food

By jojocng |

Waiters were friendly and the food was very good. My girlfriend introduced me to this restaurant and she was right; it is very good. There were many different fusion Malaysian types of dishes that I never had on the menu. I will go back to try them soon!

Delicious

By Laura-Beth C |

Found by accident but couldn’t have enjoyed our experience more. Very friendly attentive staff, fast service and delicious food. Prices were more than reasonable and the food was so tasty. Must visit in Chinatown.

Really tasty authentic food

By HarishG999 |

I met with few friends along with my partner for a quick lunch. Straight away the food impressed us. Ambience is very simple and the restaurant itself is a small place. Service is quick and efficient. Food wise our order is popcorn chicken, TomYum soup, veg fried rice and thai coconut chicken rice stone. Apart from popcorn chicken, all the dishes are really good and tasty. Stone dish is very fresh, spicy and sizzling hot. Veg fried rice with mixed veg is really fresh. TomYum soup can be better but don't have the original TomYum soup taste. Overall wokwok impressed and my rating is 3.5/5

Really good food

By Marian T |

I am usually leery of restaurants covering more than two nationalities, but Wok Wok pulls it off beautifully. Everything here is good and portions are generous. The food tastes very fresh. The noodle dishes are all good, so it really depends which country you feel like visiting. The meat and vegetable dishes present the same challenge. The best choice would be to go with a large group so you can order more. Service is also very good and makes recommendations if you ask. They also let you know when you are ordering too much.

Perfect place to duck into for lunch or dinner

By M I |

While on a business trip in Aug 2016, this place was recommended to me by the owner of Suns Organic Teas. The family that owns Wok Wok it serves you. The place is clean, the bathroom is clean, the atmosphere is cozy, the prices are right, and the food is filling and fresh, at least what I had, which was a fried basil and pork rice pot. I liked it so much I took a friend and his family there the next day. One of the kids had orange or lemon chicken and thought it was just o.k.. but we tried it and I thought it was pretty good too. With the rice bowl and a pot of tea, I was able to eat for $10, not including tip. They have a decent/standard selection of bottled beer as well.

Felt like in another country

Food was really good, service was excellent. And I felt like I was in another country. We had a nice time and enjoyed our food! Prices were fine

Horrible

By Chmpgnrose |

I have been inclined to Drunken Noodle. My experience is nothing positive but turbulent time. Defective tables Cash only No internet signal due to location in a underground basement Boisterously loud background music that vibrates the walls I was seated at a defective table that was wobbly throughout my entire turbulent experience. It was very wobbly that accidentally spilled my glass of water which was filled to the rim. My two female servers profoundly lacked English proficiency skills as they were very brusque and brazen throwing me a menacing look who are unable to communicate properly. There is no internet signal due to this location in a underground basement. Boisterously loud night club music playing in the background that is not conducive for conversation as the walls were vibrating. Electronic call buttons for service is affixed to every table depicting 21st century dinning to attain service with individual button "pay", "order", "call" and "cancel" which is callous. Forks set the table and chopsticks can only be attained by request. The bottom of the bill embeds "gratitufy is not included, please consider" of 15, 18%, 20% and 25% ergo patrons do not have to calculate the arithmetic sequence. Note the erroneous misspelling of GRATUITY. A comment card is distributed with the bill at the end of the meal for the opportunity to rate food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, and overall experience. For me, customer service is abject horrible. Merciless pain. Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) $14.45 This entrée is mediocre. The takeout menu states $10.95 and their Yelp menu also states $10.95 so why is there a price difference for this entree? Why should the takeout menu have the lower price when you are using more labor and time to hand deliver to a patron when I am a patron who is dinning-in your establishment? Why am I charged a higher price of $14.45? Note: cash only.

Great food!!

Delicious chinese food in Chinatown. I got the chicken fried rice, my husband got the sweet & sour pineapple chicken rice and we got the potstickers for an appetizer. Would definitely go back. Great service and super nice inside

One of the best in Chinatown

By Peridon |

In the center of Chinatown, on Mott Street, this restaurant is practically hidden and we found it by pure chance after a long tour looking for the right place for our dinner. You go down the stairs and arrive in a large room, with a small room, and lots of people. Friendly, smiling and very nice service from the room manager (I imagine). Cuisine rich in flavours, plentiful and economical compared to the prices of the many Asian restaurants in the area, which are not as convenient as you might think. Despite the much vaunted use of debit or credit cards, a 10% discount is offered for cash payments... moreover, there is an ATM right at the entrance to withdraw money. N.B.: Here too, as in all the clubs in New York, you will be accompanied by an imaginary friend to whom you will have to pay the bill (I mean the additional cost of taxes, service and the often demanded 20% tip)... for a level playing field we should start to make American tourists in Italy pay this tax.

Wow...the best meal we have

By Paps |

Wow...the best meal we have had in China town NYC!!! We had a little giggle on the way out, we only had to wait 10min for a table yet other places close by had easily an hour-1 & a half hour table wait time!!! I highly recommend the roti, and the green chicken curry...it was delicious!! All meals were reasonably priced. As an Australian who doesn’t come from a tipping culture, I liked that they specify ‘only tip if the food and service is worth it’...which in its essence is what a tip is!! The food and service was impeccable so we tipped 20%....unlike other restaurants in NYC that include a tip of 18% even when I’m ordering, paying and collecting food myself 😳😳😳, or for grumpy entitle service! I highly recommend Wok Wok!!! We will be coming back here for sure!
