Really good sushi

By rjt119 |

This smart new restaurant on Lex near Grand Central is a branch of a Japanese seafood chain specializing in sustainable sushi from farmed fish. They fly the fish over from Japan and prepare it here, and it is amazing-- particularly the tuna, which is better than any I've eaten in the US. A great way to appreciate the difference is their tuna sampler (when available)-- two slices each of otoro, chutoro and maguro, respectively the fattiest, fatty and normal choice cuts of bluefin tuna: quite different in appearance, texture and taste, all sublime. And there's lots of other delicious superfresh sushi and sashimi on the menu, as well as cooked fish and other tasty Japanese preparations--rolls, tempura, vegetables, noodles... Dinner is best; they've begun serving a nice prix fixe lunch but the choice is limited, and it kills me to see their wonderful fish and not to be able to order off the full menu. Service is friendly and generally good; there are still occasional start-up pains and it can get a bit hectic when the place is full. Prices are competitive, though as at any sushi restaurant you can run up a bill if you start tasting through the extensive sake list and/or going back for sushi seconds, or thirds. But the food makes it highly recommended.

Japanese lunch

By London_foodies |

Nice outdoor lunch. The chirashi was very rich and with many different flavours, from red caviar to eel. We also liked the Tempura on rice, with three very large prawns.

Fantastic Japanese Food

By Christopher N |

A great meal, the restaurant source a lot of their food direct from Japan, and the taste is second to none.

Midtown New York Sushi a must

By John W |

Great sushi restaurant $$$ for dinner for 2. Fish was fresh. Service was excellent. Selection of wine, beer, and extensive selection of Sake.

A place for lunch or dinner with partner (s)

By devinewise |

It's a simple traditional Japanese restaurant. No frills. some items can be pricy but guess that's for those who long for the special items. Otherwise, I'd recommend the Salmon Don.. I've never tasted salmon so perfect.... the only down side is probably the size of the portions..but well maybe that's just me. The ambiance is, however, great for business meetings and lunches.

Worth a revisit

By Danny N |

This was my third dinner over a a period of 6 months. Tried three different types of fish foods and soups, and each was amazing. The food never disappointed. I liked the black wooden theme in the restaurant. And the staff were quite welcoming.

Great Japanese with great interior

We loved the atmoshere, this is a contemporary place with good service and really good food. We will be back if in the neighbourhood.

Authentic Japanese dishes

By foodlovergirlny |

Our server was not overly friendly, but very polite and efficient. He was tall and handsome Japanese guy, more “cool” than friendly. We were well taken care of, we had a great lunch here. The food was high quality, beautifully made, delicious and very satisfying. I would definitely go back for more!

Go for the bar but not for the food

By Plant.To.Table |

We were truly excited to see a beautiful Japanese restaurant open up in our area and looking forward with anticipation to our visit to Wokuni. We sat down in a lovely little booth and ordered some happy hour drinks, which were good quality. We opted for the classic Omakase ($55) but were convinced by the server to try the signature Omakase ($75) to get a better sense of the menu, that was our mistake. When trying a new restaurant, just try a few select dishes rather than a 10 course tasting. The highlights were the Tuna Sashimi and Sushi platter, the rest to me was inedible and to my other half who hadn't eaten all day, barely palatable. There was a paper wrapped cod with miso and vegetables (a french Japanese fusion) which was overcooked and for which you couldn't taste the miso, a salad with baby sardines which was just a blast of salt, a potato croquette with no flavor with salmon eggs and nori on top. I requested no diary and got a comment of there being no dairy in the meal, but the dessert was brought with cheese cake, creme brûlée and ice cream with no comment. The cheesecake my husband noted tasted like it came from the cheesecake factory, with no Japanese interpretation and that was his highlight. For me this ended up being a meal to endure not enjoy.

Monthly dinner with friends

By Andy Q |

We get together semi regularly with two other couples we have known for years. We always choose a different restaurant to try. This time we had tried Wokuni as it was near my wife’s office and our friends’ apartments. Walked in and our table was ready at our reservation time but that was the only positive thing. The waiter took our drink orders. There were four bourbons on the drink menu so I ordered my old standby Makers on the rocks. He brings the others drinks and let’s me know that they are out of Makers. So I pull the menu back out and ask what he does have and he informs me the only one he has is Knob Creek so I let him know I would love a Knob Creek. 10 minutes later he comes back to tell me they are out of it too. No bourbon even though they are right next to a liquor store. Oh well it is a warm evening so white wine it is. We all order or starters and mains and life goes on. My salad comes out wrong, one couple gets one of their 2 starters, my wife gets her starter and main and the other couple didn’t order a starter. Came out rather quickly and they correct my salad and bring the other couples second starter. My main and one of the mains for the couple that had the starte comes out within a reasonable time. So three of us mains sitting in front of us and three do not we wait and we wait and we wait. We ask and we ask and we ask when it is coming. Finally an hour and 15 mins after we ordered the other mains arrive so we finally begin to eat with three of us eating items that have just been sitting there for more than 30 mins. We eat quickly as we are famished by this time. We have now paid the check with the tip already added to it and are wrapping up our conversation and getting ready to leave and the manager comes over to the table. We assume to apologize for the poor experience but instead asks us to finish our conversation at the bar because they have people waiting on the table. No apology and the request is less than 20 minutes from when they put the last of the food on the table. We inform her we are shocked at the request given what we had bee through and that we were leaving anyway and would not be back. The food wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great either and the service was beyond horrible. We actually had a good time all evening laughing at how inept the place was. With the thousands of great choices of places to eat in Manhattan don’t waste your evening out or your money on this disappointing place.

Straight from Tokyo: Fish Anyone?

By attillathehun |

After 6 or 7 visits, I am totally convinced that this is a really good restaurant....not quite great, but really very good and an incredible addition to the dining options in Murray Hill/Grand Central area (and worth a trip from outside these districts). Why not great? The space is a bit of a challenge. A wall of great dinettes (with a few on the opposite wall), a somewhat drab sushi counter in the back, a New York bar (with not the most comfortable seating along the front and then rows of close together tables (the main seating) set off by 18 foot ceilings and minimalist finishes....i.e. not the most inviting space, but if you lower your gaze and attend to the crowds & the food, it is fine. What is very good too great? The food. Reportedly, much of the fish is airlifted from Japan where there are several branches of this restaurant. The first page (large page) of the menu are specials, super fresh fish related items. Always worth taking the time to peruse and to select some items. Their seaweed salad (five types of seaweed) is a wonder as are all of the vegetable dishes that I have tried. The soft shell crabs (in season) are treated with reverence and great spices. The salmon ranges from fatty (a Japanese favorite) to incredibly lean.....it is great to have the choice. The chefs know how to prepare fish, no doubt. There are a few 'date' items on the menu (combinations of fish and shellfish garnished with fruit, leaves and other things with some sitting on dry ice to give a fog, mist effect)....so far I have avoided these. When not crowded, the service is cordial and patient, almost to the point of indulgence. When crowded the service is friendly, efficient but not nearly as personal. This is a big factor as there are many items on the menu that require some explanation.....and the service staff has always been willing to do so...even when they are very busy. Lots of choices for saki or sochu: the staff is willing to help you make a choice that meets your specific tastes. There is a somewhat limited dessert menu, but what there is, is quite good. Their green tea ice cream is a wonderful way to end a meal. Okay, maybe it is better than very good. I will definitely be back to figure this out.

Very good sushi and assorted authentic Japanese options

By DPMelamed |

You will be happy with the food and service, but don't expect fine dining. This is medium-up-scale restaurant, no white linen, with a typical sushi restaurant vibe. Hence the score of 4. Food quality and portions were very good.

Awesome happy hour

By OpinonatedTasteBud |

This is a beautiful restaurant very close to my hotel. Happy hour was a good catch and fun. They also have a small to go case for those who wants to pick up fresh fish for sashimi at home.

Good food, service slow

By Travelmaven625 |

The food was good--we just had rolls. Wine by the glass was fine. One of the reasons that we didn't order a larger meal was that it was getting late...the service was not great, and we had to call someone over each time we wanted to order something. The food was fresh and fine, as was the atmosphere, but clearly needed more servers--they were overloaded.

Fantastic Sushi!

By mikemJ1295XE |

Excellent dinner out... loved the sushi. Great service, great good and a great night out. Would definitely return.

Excellent contemporary Japanese high end restaurant. Highly recommend it.

By TangoNY |

Excellent quality. From the first steps into this modern and upscale Japanese restaurant, one may clearly understand that it’s a special place. Ambiance is contemporary and high end. We ordered Tile Fish in sriracha spicy souse and multiple sushi rolls. The fish was incredible! The sushi was excellent. We were so pleased and would love to come back here again and again. This place is well worth every dollar they charge!

VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE

By doug100worth |

a minute agoNew-Edit UNEXPECTED AND FABULOUS. Odd neighborhood for such a restaurant. Gorgeous design. The man who greeted us graciously asked us for proof of vaccinations and was very thorough. He turned out to be our waiter. Dale & Holly ordered a dozen small plates so the four of us could share. Food was very good..............reminiscent of NOBU but not the same.....NOBU's sauces are more flavorful and of Peruvan extract. This is a terrific restaurant and we noticed that the other guests were very happy there. Good for them.

Overpriced -bad food

By EdwinHochberg |

When they told me they had 300 restaurants in Japan I should've figured out this would be nothing more than a McDonald's. This newly opened restaurant in my neighborhood looked very high scale. What I was thinking of sitting at the sushi bar and saw they only had three pieces of fish I elected to sit at a table after a very mediocre tempura and its bloated abalone I told the assistant manager the food was terrible and I was not going to order any other food please give me a check I went across the street to a Chinese restaurant the finished dinner. The prices are exorbitant but that would be one thing but to serve very mediocre food at these prices is ridiculous. Move on

Average experience but expensive

By Gareth W |

This restaurant is nicely decorated and has a large number of staff. There were only 5 tables occupied in the large restaurant, we were not able to have a booth table as all of them were reserved. We finished our dinner and only 1 other family came into eat. In my view the staff could have been more accommodating to ensure that they delivered excellent customer service. The food was ok but the portions are small. A bottle of sparkling water and 3 items from the menu cost $90. Whilst the food was ok we would not return to this restaurant.

Good food! Reasonably priced.

By Foodies8883 |

Good food! Reasonably priced. I am a returning customer and this place never disappoints. I can only recommend it.

Just Okay

By Wilson L |

Nothing to write home about during my one visit to Wokuni. Read quite a bit about it but wasn't impressed with the sushi. Tempura was OK. Service was more than adequate.

The service is important

By dandyp07 |

I have been to this restaurant and had good sushi. Unfortunately, the service is fundamental; it was lacking and imprecise. The waiter was not polite and always came to the table with the mask down. In this pandemic period, this is unacceptable. Furthermore, he was slow and inaccurate during all my brunch. The only moment he was fast happened when he asked me why I did not give the suggested tip. I think it is fundamental and primary respecting the work. Anyway, it is more important to be serious and respect the rules, especially nowadays. In my opinion, selecting the person should be the goal to achieve.

Spectacular decor

By Jarb46 |

The tofu appetizer was spectacular, the tempuras that we all ordered were very good and the desserts were very interesting. The decor must have cost a fortune. We will return for dinner to try things from the more extensive menu.

Wokuni always pleases!

By MistyAsh |

As usual, lunch at Wokuni was delicious and well-priced. Two of us selected from the lunch specials of the day. My hamachi kama portion size was huge and prepared perfectly. The green tea yatsuhashi for dessert was very fresh, as if just from a bakery in Kyoto. The service was excellent too.

Meeting friends

By Masood Mahdavifar |

Great place for a variety of meetings from a friends’ and family happy hour hangout to a business meeting or a big party! Dishes are authentic and well-presented. The tuna here is divine and very fresh. Also, items that come with saikyo miso are nice such as black cod with saikyo or the eggplant and shrimp (nasu dengaku).

True to Japanese cuisine, with an exception.

By famtravlesny |

We ate here on a Saturday evening at 8 PM prior to seeing some music in the neighborhood. We walked in and found the restaurant modestly busy but not totally full. The decor is warm, lots of wood, and very welcoming. Having lived in Tokyo for five years, we are always a little cautious going to a Japanese restaurant. Although they don’t call it one, the menu here is similar to an Izakaya. Many choices of food from sushi, hot and cold small dishes, Tempura, yakitori, and some larger main plates. We started with the assorted tuna sashimi and some cold vegetables (lotus root, burdock, etc. ). The sushi was good and the vegetables were excellent, similar to my experience in Tokyo. We then had the vegetable tempura, assorted yakitori, and yellowtail collar, which was one of the specials. The tempura was very good, I thought the yakitori was somewhat bland, and the yellowtail collar was simply outstanding. A huge portion perfectly done with delicious fish. So here’s the exception. We ordered a carafe of sake and they showed up with tall wine glasses with a bamboo carafe. We found it very strange to drink sake from wine glasses. We were never served like this before. We even asked if this was normal. Apparently they think it’s interesting to experience the sake from a wine glass. We enjoy the custom of pouring each other drinks with the small sake cups. It makes sake drinking very social. Oh well. Overall, the staff was friendly and the food was delicious. The sake was decent too, just the wine glasses seemed odd.

Delicious!

Great contemporary japanese Restaurant! Very profissional, helpful and friendly staff. Delicious food.

Just amazing japanese

By avatar27 |

We just were walking by trying to find a happy hour. They have $1 oyster and drinks specials the staff is really friendly and the place it’s beautiful decorated. We will definitely return for dinner.

Great decor let down by the pretentious food

By maria |

Great decor and very spacious: These were my first thoughts...It is not a typical Japanese restaurant. If you would like to enjoy the place, stick to the drink menu and the snacks...I feel this place tries to be more than it actually is.

Great

The Best sushi ever Awesome ❤️

By kateR9067HR |

The awesome fresh fish from Japan, Salmon from Alaska. I’ve never eaten so amazing sashimi and sushi. The fish runs melted in your mouth. They took care of every detail. All fresh wonderful done on the spot. The desert was also amazing specially ice creams made from green tea with crispy thin waffle, cream brûlée delicious. The waiter Hassan takes care about everything and recommends you brilliant. We will come back soon.

Not your average Japanese

By MarcelaMinvielle |

Came in here because the place looked beautiful and it was close to our hotel. Really glad we did. Server was from Iran and was super nice and he suggested a white fish with cilantro and green something that was to die for!

A great find by accident after taking in three museums, the last being the Morgan Library

By Jayhawkmaxx |

What a pleasant experience to come across this place, direct from Japan, per their staff. The menu appears more authentic than the normal Japanese and sushi restaurant. I did have the oysters that were on happy hour. Delicious and nicely presented relative to another place I went to (EATS on the UES) a few days before for an oyster special-nice but ordinary. Sadly, I was heading back to the UES, so had to forego that. I will be back the next time when in NYC. Much of their fish comes from their farms in Japan--should have at least tried the King Yellow Tail and Medium Fatty Tuna sushi. Another visit. Look at their website. Staff was so pleasant, and the space is very dramatic and beautifully appointed.

Best Valentine’s meal

Loved everything they had. The sushi is absolutely fresh and delightful. Good portion and wide variety where it checked off all 5 senses. Great service. Excellent timing between dishes. Good pairing. Beautiful ambiance.

Very disappointing

By MartaH69 |

Went to Wokuni for my birthday. No acknowledgement of birthday celebration whatsoever in the form of a small complimentary dessert or anything else. Waited over an hour and a half for my entrée. Manager was dismissive with a simple “order is in” upon inquiry. Very poor price-quality with extremely small portions and very high prices. First and last time we will be dining here.

Very good and tasty even if

By Tom |

Very good and tasty even if the price is high level. This is a good place for special occasions and have a good Time.

Great discovery

By Elissar B |

Stumbled upon this mid town Japanese walking around in search of a healthy lunch spot. Pleasantly surprised by the prix fix lunch sets. My grilled Tuna at less then $20 was a fresh piece of perfectly cooked fish with a rich miso, edamame and salad. Service was impeccable and ambiance upscale and quiet. Looking forward to trying again.

Great appetizers

By NoraExplorer |

We came here with our friend to celebrate her birthday. It was a very nice place to have appetizers and try a little bit of everything. That's what we did. We had Kota the waiter. He's exceptional! We had shishito pepper, chicken on skewer, fresh oyster, hamachi kama, salmon (tiny), edamame, dumplings, agedashi tofu and our final birthday dessert was green tea ice cream. I admit that I liked them all. We would like to come back and try more dishes. Kota was very helpful with our food selection and also friendly. If you're looking for a nice ambience and great Japanese appetizers, what are you waiting for? Come over!

Average food, good decor, tables too close together

By EEEEA1234 |

You come here for atmosphere rather than food. The quality of food is run of the mill so-so for Japanese. The restaurant has nice ambience and feels like one of these westernized wannabe high end Japanese experience, now becoming annoyingly common in New York and London (eg, Zuma). Also if you are just two people, the tables are placed 6 inches apart so it is very uncomfortable if you want space.

Richest fish dish we have ever eaten—and delicious!

By Jan W |

Three of us went for dinner—early (around 5:45), early enough that there was still one order of grilled blue fin collar available and an order of yellow tail collar. The blue fin collar is huge, more than enough for two. It is rich beyond belief, perhaps the richest fish dish I have ever eaten, and delicious! Yellow tail collar was also outstanding. An appetizer of monk fish liver was wonderfully fresh and beautifully prepared and presented Seaweed salad with two dressings was an excellent array of various seaweeds, all fresh and crisp. We sat at the bar and got to watch the chefs prepare fish and other foods. Wokuni's decor is attractive and warm. Service was excellent. We will definitely go back—but again try to get there early and perhaps even call ahead to be sure that collar is available.

Good meal and welcoming staff.

By Isabelle J |

We ended in here by chance but the staff were very welcoming. We had our 3 children aged 15, 13 and 10 with us. We had a mixture of sushi, sashimi, skewers. The sushi and sashimi were very tasty. The skewers were good and we all ate well. We thought that for a sushi restaurant the overall bill was not too bad - less than we paid for burgers and pizzas onroom service a previous night and much better!

Great meal and service

By Jenny H |

We happened to walk pass this restaurant whilst on holiday in New York and decided to try it out and we are so glad we did. We had a warm welcome and whilst busy they immediately found a table for us. The food was lovely and the service was friendly and efficient without us feeling rushed. There was a really nice ambiance and I have recommended this restaurant to a friend who lives near New York.

Delectable Unagi

By Nitz T |

A modest Japanese Restaurant few blocks away from the Grand Central. We are three ladies and went for a Prix Fixe lunch. My sister and I decided to have Unagi Don and the other lady have chosen Salmon Ikura Don. The Unagi was amazingly delicious. We indeed enjoyed our meal. Highly recommended!

Fantastic New Japanese Cuisine

By Sarloc L |

As good nouvelle Japanese cuisine as you can get in Kyoto. We were three, we ate a lot and we shared the dishes, so I had a very good glimpse at all the menu. For those that dream about asking for a good wine, they have it, but please don’t do it: they have a fantastic list of good sakes. My favourite: dry sake from Fukushima (it is not radioactive!).

Atmosphere: trendy upscale Japanese restaurant. Service: OK, a bit spotty. Food: excellent.

By MCK |

My friend and I wanted a sushi lunch in the area we were sightseeing in. I made Opentable lunch reservations at 1:00 on a Wednesday, worked out perfectly. The restaurant was beautiful and seemed very clean. When we arrived they only had a few tables open, we were greeted and seated right away. Service was a bit spotty in the beginning, took a bit for a server to come over. We ordered hot sake while we perused the menu on our phones. The sake took forever to be served even after asking 3 times. The lunch deals were great and very reasonably prices. We ordered the Salmon Don and the Kaisen Don along with a Hamachi Kama. The rice dishes all came with soup, salad and edamame. All the dishes came out hot, fresh and tasting greatly. Love this place! We would definitely come back next time in NYC. Atmosphere: trendy upscale Japanese restaurant. Service: OK, a bit spotty. Food: excellent.

Good 👍

By Casey G |

Very good food, was a little confused after asking waiter some questions. Small appetizers and dishes they claim to include in meals but gigantic portion of main dish. Would recommend but other places might enrich your life the same

Interesting new Japanese restaurant but lacks focus

By Adrian L |

Wokuni is a band new Japanese restaurant and its menu features sushi, Japanese skewers, appetizers, and entrees. I ordered a number of dishes. I started with the Kumamoto oysters ($3 each), which was good and reasonably priced. Then I ordered the sushi platter featuring seven sushi and one roll. The fish was fresh and the quality was good. While it was not the best sushi in town, it is decent. However, the restaurant should offer a larger sushi platter so it will be more filling. Then I tried out their Chawa-Mushi, steamed egg custard, which was the worst dish I had. The egg was overcooked and under-seasoned. I also tried out their shrimp skewer, which was delicious. In conclusion, it was an interesting dining experience, and the restaurant may be a bit ambitious in serving such a large variety of food. The service was good, but the waiting staffs still need some training regarding the food that they were serving.

It’s close by the hotel so give it a try

By HelloKuromi |

One dollar oyster in happy hour. I’ve got a lot of shells/soil in my oysters. The Japanese food has room for improvement. I had to have a shake shark burger afterwards 😁

Disappointing Sushi at Wokuni – Proceed with Caution

By Harry Sikka |

I went to Wokuni for dinner and started on a high note with the oysters—they were fresh, well-presented, and hit the spot. But the sashimi platter quickly turned things sour. The platter arrived with five types of fish (15 pieces total). First up was the salmon, which smelled faintly fishy—definitely not sushi-grade fare. It felt like something rolled out of Costco’s fresh case. The fluke that followed was similarly lackluster, lacking the clean, fresh quality sashimi should have. The sea bass was a slight improvement, and the yellowtail was acceptable, though still not outstanding. But the real disappointment came with the tuna. I found a visible blood vein running through the flesh—unappetizing and easily avoidable with proper trimming. I flagged it and asked the server what was going on. He took it to the chef, who came back and told me, “This is how Japanese eat sashimi.” That apology—or lack thereof—was laughable and insulting. Any competent sushi chef knows the bloodline is removed because it’s strong-tasting, off-putting, and hardly appetizing. If the chef can’t be bothered to properly clean their fish, what else are they cutting corners on? Bottom line: Inspect your sashimi before you eat it. My experience was disgusting and incredibly disappointing. This level of carelessness isn’t what I expect for sushi. I won’t be returning, and I can’t recommend Wokuni to anyone who cares about quality or value.

Very Nice Experience

By Tonia E |

Overall it was a very nice experience!! Our waiter was extremely good at his job, he promoted special menu options, he explained everything to us and we had a very nice time while dining at this beautiful restaurant. I highly recommend it!

Totally YUM

By Jacqueline F |

We are from Sydney and are lucky we have fantastic Japanese restaurants here. We were staying in the area and stopped to look in early one morning when the restaurant was closed. What we saw was an ordered, immaculate space with a stunning interior - a good sign so we booked dinner for that evening. The space is almost like a Cathedral..beautiful gold tones, stunning. This is what we ordered...miso soup, an assortment of grilled skewers, sashimi, grilled Saiko Miso King Salmon and King Salmon with spicy sauce..this choice was difficult as everything that passed our table look so nice. Our plates of food came out "at the chef's judgement" were sensational, fresh and authentic...I honestly couldn't pick a favourite, the restaurant was full and had a fabulous atmosphere. Our server was so helpful and picked out our wine, spending considerable time with us. We loved this whole experience...

Great tasting Japanese "tapas" falloff umami and great service.

By FjonK |

Second visit to Wokuni and very happy once again. Brought the family this time and all were enthusiastic. Girls 12 and 13, one picky eater, found food they loved. Sure, the place is expensive, but think about it like super tasty Japanese tapas. Small dishes, but order a lot and share. Umami overload on pretty much everything. Service was great, food came fast (almost too fast), and everything was fantastic. We ordered across the menu - Avocado Salmon; Maguro Tartare; Agedashi Tofu; hamachi and uni sushi; chicken, salmon and beef skewers; lamb chops; and tempura udon...but the to die for dish is the fish in parchment...miso, butter, onions, and mushrooms and rich enough to qualify for dessert. Also, an extensive sake menu to round it off. We don't live in NYC so clearly don't know all the insider places, but having lived 8 years in San Francisco, I expect I'd be a regular at this place if I didn't live in New Hampshire.

Solid Izakaya spot but go early

By USCKaboom |

I had read a lot about Wokuni and was excited to try some of their more unique dishes. Unfortunately they were out of the blue fin collar so we ordered the yellow tail collar. Sadly they were out of that too. Lesson is go early. Everything was good, nothing was amazing. The sushi was very good. Overall a lot of menu options, so there should be something for everyone. Easy to get a table and we were there a while. Service was friendly but a bit slow.

Very good find and an innovative menu

By SilverBond |

The food was very good and the ingredients very fresh. Their creative menu offers a good selection of Asian dishes. Their beer and wine choices at very low cost make this a very appealing lunch place. Highly recommended.

Friendly, welcoming and grand…. Wonderful-weekday-working-lunch and Happy Hour specials !!

By Alok Jolly |

I’m back working in NYC… after a hiatus of some 28 years which were spent working in the other Boroughs (mostly Queens) and am delighted to be back in the Center of the World: the Grand Central Station district. Everything happens here: gawking tourists, homeless “veterans”, Government shadies, businessmen in suits, shoppers, amateur professional photographers, madding crowds, and whatever ~ and great food surrounds all of these varied acts !! My work hours dictate the kind of foodie places I get to explore: which by the nature of this cycle, are usually lunch and after-work eateries. We go for the ones with the “specials,” and the area teems with the like… all offering amazing and a wide variety of endless, fleeting and everchanging deals. So, something has to be said about the ones I do get to experience as I bite the Big Apple again, and savor its wares ~ most often, accompanied by my work colleagues. Wokuni has a grand, tall and imposing, glass-fronted space located on Lexington Avenue, three blocks south of Grand Central Terminal. The décor is based on traditional Japanese motifs and materials ~ very classy and soothing colors and earthy palettes: earthen tiles, rough-hewn woods, stone, glass shelves stacked high with wine bottles behind the bar. The bar counter that stretches along the left wall is sparkling clean and efficiently appointed. Here, Wokuni also offers for sale a select variety of exquisite seafood from their own farms in southern Japan, which are flown in fresh for their kitchen. The central floor is a field of tables, banquettes along the right wall, and a smaller, more intimate room which is screened off for privacy, at the rear of the space. Soft, discreet lighting brings it all together seamlessly… very well done !! The hosts exude oriental grace and charm. They welcome their guests like guests to one’s home (as is their custom.) Their menu is simple and extensive, with daily lunch specials set out at very good prices through the week. My group usually goes for the after-work Happy Hour (5pm to 7 pm, M-F) oyster and wine special “Arigato Set.” Their oysters (served six to an order) used to be just colossal, (the size of one’s palm ~ and not donnie twittler’s) but on my last visit I found they had shrunk to the average size served everywhere else, and had also been reduced to five to a serving. The size could be seasonal, but taking away 1/6th of the oysters ??? A chilled, crisp of chardonnay served with these delicious, briny, plump and springy beauties sprinkled with herbs and fresh lemon juice ~ for $10 (!!) is a deal not to be passed by. Though, one has to admit, they can’t be blamed to limiting orders to one plate per person at that price… it’s a teaser. A very satisfying end to a long day at work, and well worth the visit to this charming and classy establishment ~ so do go there… and enjoy. Spoiler: I see on their website they have just reduced the portion to 4 oysters… go now !! Its fading fast.

Not for sushi, go for drinks and grilled snacks

By Duchesse |

Pros: Attentive server who provided excellent advice on sake; great cocktails; buzzy room with cool decor Cons: Substandard sushi; we got the 5 pc+roll, 7 pc + roll and some a la carte sushi. Fish was wet, bland and pedestrian. Had better from corner no frills shops. Server alluded to 'problems in kitchen'. If you go, stick to skewers and izakaya type items.

Great service, delicious food and fresh fish

By Myat |

I came in for lunch on a Saturday and got unagi (eel) don which came with miso soup, salad and edamame; great value for a lunch set. The staff was friendly and attentive; excellent service with care and quick service. The food came out so fast and lunch has happy hour too. I got Asahi beer and had toro salmon nigiri and yaki harasu nigiri. The cheesecake was the perfect ending for dessert. I would definitely recommend this place for lunch.

Not quite

By 68WorldTraveler68 |

Visited twice and disappointed twice. The only positive is the large space and beautiful decor. The food has is a bit tasteless, presented poorly and served with an attitude by the waiters. No effort whatsoever to cater to dietary restrictions.

Value for your $$

We ordered the Chief special, the sashimi and sushi were so fresh and the presentation was just beautiful! The price was good, considered we were in the heart of Manhattan! The place is small and causal. We had a great time!

Huge servings

Went here for lunch. Got two nice seats in the bar (open kitchen). The servings were quite big and included both miso soup, salad and diffrent kinds of fresh fish. The taste was average, could be more spicy.

Japanese Happy Hour Here we Come!!!

By ccpark888 |

Great sake, cocktails and your beverage of choice with a nice selection of small bites like crispy fried chicken always served piping hot, numerous, very fresh sushi/sashimi along with cooked fish dishes so flavorful served with a smile and zen. space is good for small and larger groups. Ask them about the sashimi dish served over dry ice... delicious and video worthy.

Really bad experience

Food was terrible. No taste, cold and salmon completely burnt. We showed the waitress but she didn’t care. Will never come back to this place!

Had Us Giving Thanks!

By Theresa |

We went for thanksgiving as many places were closed. We are so grateful we stumbled upon Wokuni. The Sake flight was fantastic and offered a great range of notes. The Japanese Omlet (Tamagoyaki) with dashi broth was so tender I felt like I went to heaven. We also got Uni and a nigiri plate. Everything we tried was fresh and full of flavor. This is the best sushi I have ever had, by far.

Excellent Japanese

Excellent Japanese food with particularly friendly and helpful staff. Ambience is great, not too noisy but lively. Would return.

Exquisite food

By GRUK |

The food here is simply exquisite, some of the best Japanese we’ve ever had (and we’ve had a lot, including in Japan!). The quality of the fish was very high and cut or cooked to perfection. Very good variety of dishes and drinks. Service was good. Would visit again and again!

Two Thumbs Up

Wonderful experience, lovely ambiance, great food. Noise level can be a bit loud when the place is full but you don’t notice after a few minutes. And their cocktails are awesome! It was truly a lovely experience and worth every penny.

Best price for quality sushi in town!

By Asa P |

I was in town on business and stopped into Woniku on Lexington between 38th-39th streets for some sushi. The place is very classy looking and incredibly clean. The service was quick and the sushi was very good. Some of the most reasonably priced sushi I’ve ever found in NYC without sacrificing quality. I also had a nice chat with the owner, Ali, who was very friendly and humble. The place has only been open a few months, but I’d definitely recommend it. I’ll be back during my next business trip to the city.

Great izakaya

They have a happy hour menu but I think it's until 7pm only. Great izakaya style menu for sharing, all was good.

Lovely place! Great food!

So-so "Omakase" set

By Steve C |

After our waiter explained to us about their Happy Hour, we ordered the oysters about 15 min before the cut off time, which is 7pm. Then, 5 min later, we were told that they ran out of oysters. I find that rather unacceptable. They should either tell us before we ordered, or provide some complimentary appetizer as a gesture. No. Then, we ordered the Premium Omakase set. My understanding was Omakase should be prepared by the chef as we sit by the counter, which we requested and got. The chef would hand make each course and hand it right to you. Everything is from the fresh catch of the day, so one wouldn't know what might be served. As it turned out, their Omakase was just non-glorified set menu. As such, I would not consider it good value at all. Overall, underwhelming. It's not bad, if you go a la carte. Do manage your expectations, and you should be fine. The attached photos are two person sharing portion, except the 3-bites vegi dish and one with shrimp tempura. $95/set.

Worst bartenders ever

By Luciano B Alencar |

I went with my wife and from the start the waiters were helpless. They didn't support us and, in the final, one of them followed me in the streets to ask why I gave him less than 10% of the total. I'll never come back. Sorry. The food was ok, but the bartender turned it horrible.
