Delicious!

By Hazel P |

Nonono is an interesting Japanese restaurant. If you use yelp you can order takeout from them if you don’t want to dine in. Prices I think are decent for New York. Food is pricier in New York than Toronto (Canada). But I was satisfied with their food. The restaurant itself looks clean & minimal modern decor. It’s really close to the Redbury Hotel where I stayed. Literally you just walk out the back of the hotel on 30th street, walk to the end of that street to Madison & it’s across the street. I had the meatball yakitori one night along with some California, cucumber & avocado rolls. Then another night I had the short rib with onion yakitori & some rolls. Each nights order came to about $30 usd. I ordered extra to eat the next morning. I know maki for breakfast is strange but I didn’t want to go out for breakfast in the morning. I have som food allergies so this is safe food for me to eat.

Wow, excellent

I love yakitori and Yakitori Nonono definitely exceeded expectations. They have a lot of yakitori options but also a ton of other dishes. We got an eclectic mix of dishes. Almost everything was delicious. The only underwhelming dish was the grilled mushroom, which was perfectly cooked, but a bit bland. Really cool space and friendly and fast service.

Cute spot for yakitori and more

By pillowsofwanderlust |

This is one of my nephew's favourite Japanese spots in NYC (he's a local). It's a cute 2-story spot with tables on both floors. Upstairs has a couple of semi-private nooks and also the tiny restrooms. The menu is eclectic, with yakitori skewers, rice bowls, apps, sushi, etc. plus cocktails. We let the local order. I remember getting chicken and beef skewers, tuna rolls, eggplant, chicken karaage, gyozas, an eel rice bowl. Everything was tasty, but my faves were the skewers, eggplant and eel (my first time trying eel). Worth a visit. It's a few blocks north of Madison Square Park.

good eats after a long day

We dined at this restaurant since it was close to our hotel in Nomad and had great reviews. The restaurant is very simple, not fancy. Great selection of food and cocktails. All that we ordered came out quickly and was delicious. Standouts were the clams, grilled chicken hearts and Kara age. Cocktails were phenomenal. I had way too many. Food adds up so be careful. Its hard to avoid ordering more because the food is so good. Wait staff was on point.

Amazing value!

nonono has a huge menu & is extremely affordable - what else can you ask for? The food was GREAT! It’s a great place to go with a group - order a bunch of things and share. They don’t take reservations, but you can join a waitlist online before you go - my friends and I put ourselves on the waitlist, they gave us a time, so we were able to plan accordingly.

Fresh fresh fresh

Made sure to have a reservation before arriving for Saturday Brunch. Well worth the $$$ Avocado Uni was warm and unexpected. Good yakitori sauce. Selection was just ok. Ramen combo with chirashi and a few skewers definitely satisfied. I'd recommend this place for lunch. I'd like to try the full dinner menu with additional skewer options.

Love Nonono

I have been here several times. There food is excellent. Such a diverse menu of Japanese food. Great service and nice vibe

Extensive Menu

By rbe1023 |

Extensive food and drink menu and all are good! I don’t see oden offered often so I was tickled when I saw it on the menu. Their chawanmushi is a generous serving of pure heaven with all my favorite things — uni, crab, mushrooms, etc.! Price point is fair. Reservation recommended as it fills up quickly.

The best meal of our holiday

This place is great! We were recommended to visit by a friend and had a superb meal here. Good attentive service - food and drinks were soooo good. The clams, the katsu shrimp, and the sushi were all top drawer.

A Japanese joint with all Asian faces

By RF F |

Conveniently located close to Penn Station, this restaurant features rough architectural loft charme on two levels. No tablecloths, the - very friendly - staff in black T-shirts. Short menu, including the list of sake. What makes this place really worthwhile is that the food and its pricing are just right. I had dinner with a friend, and without choosing from the menu, we asked the waiter to serve us a 4 - 6 course meal with all fish - an improvised kaiseki. We got scallops with sea urchin that could not have been better, the head of a yellowtail (the meaty part that remains when a round fish is filleted) which was delicious, fresh and precisely cut and presented sashimi, some sushi, and a fancy roll where the chef could not resist the temptation of adding a mayonaise-y sauce that took away the cleanness and purity that otherwise would have been maintained. All that came at a very affordable check of $180, including a $70+ bottle of sake. Overall, this is the right place for people who want good food, and are willing to sacrifice on refinement of decoration and service. On my way out, I noticed that the majority of the other patrons were Asian - mostly Japanese, I would guess. I think they made a good choice.

Fantastic all around

By Florida |

Absolutely wonderful and cozy find in the middle of a hustling area. The service was extremely friendly and attentive. Each dish we ordered was delicious. Definitely best to share everything. Portions were hearty. Not overpriced. Great all around and would return 100%! Their menu is also very unique - a unique combination of ramen, raw options, and sushi.

Quick work dinner.

By DrKahless |

Early business dinner. Place was empty at 530 but filled fast. Seated at 600 and told we had to be out by 715 for others. I opted for sushi options and they were very good. Try the Hamachi. Overall nice place and everyone was happy with their meal. Recommended.

Amazing Japanese- modern take

By AP1888 |

Amazing Japanese- modern take on authentic Japanese. Very reasonably priced. Ramen served at dinner too. Really impressed. It’s a great casual dinning spot for amazing food.

Skewers were good

By M&M |

The skewers were the best thing we tried. The cocktail drinks are small but tasty. We had the eggplant, fried chicken (karage) yellow tail cheek and salmon tataki. The chicken and beef skewers were great! The scallop skewer was over grilled. We ate at 5:30 pm so the place was fairly empty. The servers were over attentive, clearing your plate the second you finished. So with the small plates they were at our table it seemed every few minutes. Would have liked some privacy. The ramen and noodles looked good but we didn’t order any noodles. Simple decor two levels.

Amazing experience!

By Klaudia J |

We tried a lot of new flavours we've never had before including Chawanmushi (savoury egg custard), raindrop cake and black seasame panna cotta. The service was extremely fast so do bare this in mind if you are going for a romantic dinner because it felt just a little rushed but it didn't ruined our evening. There is no wifi but the staff are very helpful, especially when we were lost getting our next destination. All in all a great restaurant.

Nonono = No,NowWaitForever, NoNotEver, No,Never

By ax09001h |

Food was mediocre, and I was looking forward to the Paitan Ramen. Food came out in ad hoc order before beverages. Everyone else had finished before 4th person received their dish. Super loud socially unaware diners with poor acoustics make the place intolerable. Substandard service - lousy environment, mediocre food, poor service and execution. L o u s y

Traditional Japanese restaurant

By Janna Lopez |

This Japanese restaurant has Japanese employees who kindly explain how their menu works, the food was very good, they have a lot of variety of ramen and you can see how they prepare it in front of you. They recommend booking, but have small spaces for walk-in clients. The Mood is very similar to the traditional of its culture.

Excellent new style Japanese on 30 th street

By Allan S |

New age Japanese specializing. In modern small grilled dishes and soups. Refreshing and modern place. With a hip staff. Excellent service And a tantalizing menu that will be fun for all.

Yes yes yes !

By Curlywurly |

This buzzy place is full of locals - a good sign. The menu has pictures of all the dishes which is fab and I wish more restaurants would do this. We had about six dishes between two of us which was ideal. Every dish was exquisite and beautifully presented. The cocktails were unusual and tasty. This place will be top of my list next time I am in Manhattan.

At the top

The cuisine is uniquely different, quite a variety and great tastes. We ordered about a dozen different items and all were excellent.

Creamy Curry Udon and chicken meatball skewers are a must

By Melanie T |

I've been wanting to try nonono for a while now but every time I check their available reservations, there is never a reasonable dinner time. Until one Sunday, it was 5:45, and my fiancé and I were starting to get hungry. So I checked the times (still nothing reasonable), but there is a Yelp waitlist option, which indicates we'll be seated around 7, so we did that. It was pretty accurate, because we got there half an hour early, but they said we'd recieve a text once our table was ready, and we got that text at 7:05. I was a little puzzled about the wait times because the second floor was pretty much empty. Maybe the restaurant plays this game to build up hype, which is annoying, but the food was so good that I'd deal with the wait again. We started off with some skewers. (Be careful with these because these can add up right quick). I must say, it was better than some of the skewers I've had in Japan. Here are all the skewers we shared: Chicken skin - perfectly crispy, but not my fave Chicken neck - not memorable Chicken liver - a little dry but good overall Chicken thigh - juicy and flavorful Chicken meatball - this was our favorite of the night. It was perfectly cooked and the texture was just right We also ordered a few other things: Oyako Salmon (roll with salmon roe, salmon, spicy salmon, avocado, and jalapeño) - probably not one of their most popular items but still a pretty good roll. Creamy Curry Udon (spicy beef curry udon topped with potato whipped cream and aonori) - aside from the chicken meatball, this was another fave of the night. The creaminess of the sauce perfectly balanced out the spicyness from the curry. Kani Fried Rice (fried rice with snow crab, egg, and scallion) - this one was underwhelming. I didn't really taste the snowcrab and overall, it was bland. We ended up using the sauce from the udon, which instantly made it 100x better. Can't wait to come back to try some other skewers. Hopefully they'll stop playing with the wait times.

Great sushi

By Wdwphd57 |

Great variety of sushi dishes. Salmon and tuna were very fresh,. Picture menu, food is fresh and uniquely seasoned. Highly recommend the restaurant

Great place for variety

By Tunaidi |

Nonono, I still don't completely understand the motto even after reading the description several times on the menu, but that's besides the point. I'm a big fan of Take 31, and Nonono seems to follow similar trends except with Japanese cuisine. The food is great, with many options, and unique eats -- from skewers, to noodles, to rice dishes, to appetizers, to share plates, and uncommon items. The skewers and many of the dishes were pretty solid. Skip the ramen though. The chicken wings stuffed with gyoza was also quite memorable. Beware of the waits though.

Best Sushi I’ve ever had!

By NurseSooz |

Oh my goodness. Best Sushi I have EVER had. The salmon was beautiful and the yellowtail with ponzu salsa was not enough!! I could’ve eaten three times more! The yakitori skewers tasted properly barbecued and we’re cooked to perfection. This was a food highlight of our NYC trip and I would’ve easily gone back. Really chilled atmosphere and close to loads of good attractions.

Very authentic Japanese restaurant!

By cue14 |

Very authentic Japanese restaurant! Service was great, we disliked a dish and they actually asked for feedback. Food came out pretty quickly at a mindful pace. We will reorder: 1. Short rib yakitori 2. Zucchini yakitori 3. Salmon tataki 4. Scallop uni carpaccio 5. Spicy ramen (Tori tan tan) We ordered, thought it was ok and probably will not reorder: 1. Atsuyaki tofu miso yakitori 2. Kimono cream yakitori - cream was good, but thought it was heavy. Chicken was well cooked 3. Salmon bruschetta Tips: happy hour everyday before 7. Definitely will come back!

Good and Healthy

By tu-anhLOVE |

We went here for happy hour and the size of the food is perfect too and it is very good and healthy. Definitely coming back here the next time I come. There is always a waiting list but if you go on the early happy hour side, you should be ok.

"Try the grey stuff, it's delicious!" <3

I had quite a challenge on my hands. My friend was visiting from out of town, and I promised her two things: I'd take her to the Museum of Sex & we'd eat at a sushi restaurant. This may have been our final meeting for a long time, so I had to choose wisely. But thanks to nonono, I was able to fulfill my promise of giving my friend sushi that was conveniently nearby the museum, as well as other great attractions in the city. We had a reservation for 5:30pm, and when we arrived, at first we were told that we never reserved anything. But then, I spoke with another employee and they confirmed that I did confirm a spot that evening. I'm unsure why there was a confusion, with one employee having my name while the other didn't, but I thought it was important to note as it could've involved an issue with their system. We were seated upstairs and greeted by a kind waitress who tended to all of our needs, including pouring more water for us when she noticed we were running low. I loved the attentiveness and welcoming aura of the staff. Oftentimes, I heard them yelling, "Irasshaimase!" which means "Welcome!" in Japanese; this was done every time there was a new guest entering the building. I used to live in Japan, and it was so cool to know I still remembered the language and I was transported back to that time where I felt accepted in a foreign community. The setting for the restaurant can be a hit or miss. One might feel as though they're eating in a dull, unfinished building, while others would appreciate its down-to-earth, wooden design. Personally, I didn't mind it. I think it fed into the Asian culture of being minimalistic, devoid of materialistic pieces that would would steer away from the purpose of the dishes: to fill the guests' appetite with all-natural ingredients. So, if you're trying to wow your family or friends with a flashy establishment, this place is not for you. My friend & I ordered a lot of things that day. We had a rainbow roll, salmon tataki, yakitori chicken, and a shio paitan ramen bowl. While some food was really good, there were others than just missed the mark. The shio paitan was delicious, but also a tad too salty and the onion overpowered much of the chicken flavor I was hoping to get from the protein. I devoured most of the rainbow roll, even though it was to be shared, because my friend didn't like the pesto dressing. She also couldn't stomach the salmon tataki because of the avocado puree that coated the bottom of the fish. Just because she didn't like it doesn't mean it was bad, because I found it amazing, but I stress these contrasting thoughts because it may be useful for those interested in visiting with picky eaters. I knew long ago that my friend was picky, but she insisted on a sushi place. However, it might be hard to find a picky eater a dish they'll enjoy here, because a lot of Asian food includes many ingredients that create a unique flavor, and if they're squeamish with sauces, vegetables, or broths, then I'd find another place to eat. Nonono is best suited for guests that are comfortable eating high quality Japanese food, or are at least open to trying new things. For dessert I tried their Kuro goma, which is a black sesame pannacotta and my friend had the Gateau Chocolat, a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Both were incredible, although the cake was super rich that even a person like me who loves sweets found it to be too powerful to consume all at once. My tip is to drench it with the ice cream to dilute the flavor. As for the Kuro goma...Oh my goodness, I would return just for that! I was a little scared to try it at first with its grey color that I've never seen for a dessert, but it was the perfect ending to a large dinner. Not too sweet, and not large enough to feel sickly full. Just enough to beg for more- even the tiny biscuit was incredible. As they say in Disney's Beauty & the Beast, "Try the grey stuff. It's delicious!" I would come here again with a different partner to share food with. Bringing a picky eater wasn't the smartest move, as this is meant for people who can enjoy complex flavors. I think people visiting from Japan could find a real comfort in stopping by here, as the staff enjoys creating a similar experience that they have cemented back in their country. But, this doesn't push anyone else away from trying out this lovely spot. I don't have one Asian bone in my body, yet I still love this kind of food. I truly think anyone could if they search for the right things. While I wouldn't say it was a perfect experience, I'm still glad that I tried it out because it opened my world view even more to food that I never thought I could like, including that black sesame panncotta. Seriously, you gotta try it!

Yakitori heaven

By Sabena S |

Last Sunday I finally ate lunch at Yakitori Nonono. All I wanted were assorted yakitori. I particularly liked the beef short rib with onions and the shisito peppers. However, the chicken wing was bony. I ate these with a bowl of white rice which was ample. Most customers had ramen with a plate it two of yakitori. Service was fine. I plan to return.

Great Japanese’s experience in affordable budget

A modern Japanese place with large selection of Yakitori and Ramen dishes. Everything we ordered tasted delicious. Prices are reasonable for the quality and service and ambiance. Recommended!

Great Japanese Cuisine!

By J C |

Came here on a Sunday for brunch. We were seated by the kitchen where we got to see all of the action go down which was pretty cool. There's two floors to this restaurant, where I didn't know there was a second floor until I went looking for the bathroom. The bathroom itself was quite something. My gf and I shared two box sets that we ordered. I got the A1 Ramen Noodle Set which consisted of Tori Tantan Ramen, Chawanmushi, and Chirashi Don. My gf got the B1 Rice Bowl Set which consisted of Yakitori Don, Soup, Chawanmushi, and Sashimi Salad. The ramen itself was a little bit on the spicy side, but still pretty tasty. The Yakitori Don consisted of a rice box with four different kababs consisting of grilled shishito, chicken meatball, chicken thigh, and chicken breast & scallions. They tasted great. The Chawanmushi is very underrated in my opinion, which is steamed eggs and contains a steamed shrimp and a fishcake. The overall experience was phenomenal. For about $25 per box set, you get a variety of food items and a very filling meal. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. Will definitely be back again for more amazing food next time.

"Chawan Mushi" was SO GOOD!

By Emma Z |

Everything we had at Nonono was really tasty but very small portions as they are "tapas" and meant to share. A weird thing about this restaurant is that the menu includes big pictures of each dish & only three a page so you have to remember what you wanted from page 2 when you are still flipping through the long menu. Everything comes out whenever it is ready. My favorite dish was the "Chawan Mushi" which is a Japanese steamed egg custard with shrimp, of course I added the crab, salmon roe, and sea urchin! It was SO GOOD!

Not a bad venue for great food

By rbears |

We popped into this local eatery as we fancied some bbq food on a stick (aka Yakitori). We were seated upstairs which doesn’t really have the same vibe as the main floor where the kitchen is. It was worth booking (we went on Sunday at 8pm) The food was as expected but my issue was the speed the hot food came out, almost all at once hence some of it got cold by the time we were ready to eat them. I think the waiter should have informed us. TIP, order almost as when you want them. The raw tuna/salmon/yellowtail tartare was simply outstanding and would highly recommend it. Their cocktails are also great.

Absolutely shocking, do not go here…

By Vicky T |

I booked this restaurant for NYE with my husband and two children. We had come from London and were recommended by friends to go there. When we arrived (after a 30 minute walk in torrential rain), we were taken to a table that was completely set apart from the rest of the restaurant, and with no atmosphere at all. When we asked for another table we were offered a row of 4 seats looking out at the street and scaffolding. We were then offered another table upstairs by the waitress which we accepted. Only to then be told by her manager that we were not to be allowed that table as they wanted to shut that area of the restaurant. When we pointed out two table of two downstairs, that could be put together for us, they sarcastically asked why they should ask other customers to move a bit, to accommodate that happening. On no level did this restaurant or its staff care in the slightest about this situation, and instead of trying to find a solution to suit everyone, they went out of their way to get us out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. They clearly wanted to shut for the night, and should not have accepted a booking for 21.45. I have never written a bad restaurant review, especially in recent times, because I know that hospitality is still struggling to make ends meet. But the attitude from the staff and the fact that they laughed at us when we left the restaurant, made me write the review. Plenty of places to go in New York for a great meal and great service. In our experience this is NOT one of them…..
