Just the best selection of fresh, delicious food served with a smile, on the Upper West Side! Try the strudel and home smoked salmon pate; buy many bags of their coffee!

A foodies' Mecca. Zabar's is the real deal. I have been going to Zabar's for many years and never miss the opportunity to stop in for some cheeses and salamis to tuck inside my suitcase for the trip home. Their coffee is the best and the smoked fish bar is the stuff of legends! Upstairs there is a complete house wear department with many hard-to-find European brands.

Went at lunch time. Place was rather busy. Ordered a vegetable panini. It was disappointing. Don't think I am going there again.

I was sent for the hot, NY pastrami sandwich. (This is the only place of three 'Zabar's to get a hot pastrami.) After maps.googlescum first took me to E.A.T. (owned by Eli Zabar) where there is no pastrami, I walked to the real Zabar's. The sandwich shop is right on the corner. NO PASTRAMI HERE EITHER. I walked out the door to check the other part of Zabar's (the grocery) but I saw nothing that looked like a second restaurant and returned to the restaurant part and asked. The woman started looking around in the cold boxes for pre-made pastrami sandwiches. Fortunately, another employee heard my insistence that Zabar's was supposed to have great pastrami and said "I can run back and get one." "You can do that?" she asked. He said the hot pastramis are served at the deli counter... so I went back into the grocery. When Antonio asked what I wanted, I said, "hot Pastrami sandwich" and he asked "how?" "The regular NY way." He SAYS: "...with lettuce, tomato and American cheese?" SERIOUSLY!!!! The man next to me nearly exploded: What's wrong with you!!!??? A New York Pastrami is on rye bread with mustard and coleslaw!" Ultimately the staff training is as horrible as the sandwich is great. Amazing bark on the pastrami, good rye bread and sadly barely any coleslaw. But the flavor of that pastrami had me calculating the time I would have to carry a meat re-buy back here to Las Vegas at improper temperatures.11 hours; not good. Absolutely an epiphanal pastrami sandwich.

For an Aussie, Zabar's is amazing. Old style deli, full of wonderful fresh and gourmet delights. From Jewish to Arabic delicacies, salads, seafood (the salmon!!), fresh dips, hundreds of different kinds of meats sliced to your liking, cheeses, olives, all kinds of freshly prepared salads and meals, freshly baked breads, freshly roasted coffees ground to your liking, and anything else you can think of. And the old world ambience is charming. I was a like a kid in a candy store! Great place and affordable. If you are on the upper West Side you must visit Zabar's!

We stayed in this neighbourhood while holidaying in NYC and Zabar's was recommended to us as one of the places to eat to really immerse ourselves in the culture. It did not disappoint. Bought takeaway to take home to the family - Reuben sandwiches and smoked salmon & cream cheese bagels were delicious and an absolute hit. There is a bit of a knack to getting served that I'm sure is well known by the regulars but a little off-putting for the tourist (ie me!) but it was worth it for the food.

Great deli and grocery store. We purchased smoked salmon bagels. Salmon was very fresh but the bagels were a little heavy and definitely not the best we have tasted. That being said, there are so many other wonderful gourmet items available for purchase.

Stayed on the upper West side recently and stopped at Zabar's for bagels and cream cheese, as usual. It's always a delight and very reasonably priced. I daresay a bagel in DC would cost me twice as much. But what prompted me to write this review is that we also bought a pound of their house blend coffee which I just made a cup for myself and spouse just now. Wow, amazing. Gonna have to order this stuff online from now on.

Went here with a friend who was desperate to have another Reuben. I had one too and a cinnamon roll, both were amazing, must be tried, would definitely recommend

Strudel uses phyllo dough, what a disappointment. Phyllo is not strudel dough. What a disappointment. Oops I already said that. The strudel is terrible because it is not strudel.

Really a store for shopping for food Top deli meats, appetizing, cheese, bread, coffee. The food is available in next door space with very limited seating

The family had breakfast at the Deli. Food was great.. very filling and tasty. Went back at the end of the day and shopped at the gourme foods section. Sooo much to taste... so little time :)

If you are a visitor to NYC (I'm guessing New Yorkers know Zabar's well), Zabar's is a must. If it's summertime, buy a picnic's worth of food and bring it to Riverside Park, just two blocks away or to Central Park, 3 blocks east. The bagels and all the bread products and pastries are simply the best. The ready-made sandwiches (house-made cream cheese & Nova Scotia salmon) are tops. The prepared salads, like whitefish, baked salmon, et al are scrumptious and not what you will find at home. This is a not-to-be-missed NY experience.

Stopped here to pick up breakfast for family on trip to NYC. Got lox, bagels and cream cheese to make at my daughter's apartment. The meal was delicious. Zabar's is a high volume business, and everything offered there is first rate and fresh.

We always come to Zabar's when in New York. Great fresh food at great prices and you sit around common dining tables so get to eat and chat with the locals. The serving staff are friendly and attentive and know how to make GREAT soups - fantastic evening healthy and hearty fare after a long winter's day wandering Manhattan's neighbourhoods.

does NOT break the bank!!!! Hubby and I spent a night at the NYLO hotel close by and came here the following AM for coffee and to share a bagel with cream cheese. ALL locals doing their thing!!!! it was 10:15 AM...and it "hit the spot". We knew we had a L O N G day ahead of us.

We went here for seven of our eight mornings in NYC after a bad experience elsewhere on the Upper West Side. Good choice and my particular favourite was the yogurt with berries and granola. Good smoothies made with frozen yoghurt and fresh fruit too. Wish I lived 3,500 miles closer to this place than I do. Highly recommend.

Excellent gourmet deli. Great whitefish, lox, sable. Enormous cheese selection. Great coffee selection and the dark espresso is to die for.

I ordered food for Passover and was very disappointed. Nothing looked like the catalog photos, which made me feel deceived, and I had paid good money for the overnight shipping. My biggest complaint was about the gefilte fish which was so small it was more like meatballs--seriously. It tasted good enough, but was a rip-off. Adding insult to injury, there was one thin sliver of carrot in the container. And customer service was dismal. No response to my complaints, none at all. I guess they figure they're famous enough to ignore dissatisfied customers. And taking my business elsewhere won't matter to them, but I will, definitely.

Zabars continues to offer excellent, varied delicious food of various sorts. This is listed as a restaurant but Zabars is more a food market than restaurant. They do have a small cafe that serves sandwiches, coffee, etc. but it is only operating for takeout during COVID-19 (as of Sept. 2020) I thought I would update on what they are doing during pandemic. They are limiting the number of customers in the store, requiring masks, etc. as all places are. This sometimes results in short waits to enter but I've never seen a long one (more than 10 minutes). Inside it is probably a little more crowded than ideal but seems safe.

Rushing to return to Philadelphia had to get my bagels/lox/trimmings/everything fresh and staff ready and pleasant. Miss you Zabars!

For the week were in NY we stumbled across this place early and it quickly became a favourite. My boys enjoyed the ham & cheese paninis and I enjoyed the bagels with cream cheese. There is a large communal table that sees everyone sharing their personal space and the service is not of the high standard you experience any many other US hospitality environments, however it's still ok.

This is clearly an institution on the Upper West Side so I'm sure my unpleasant experience will do little to mar their customer base. I ate in the "to go" part of this establishment. Maybe Ashley was just having a bad day. It's been awhile since anyone has been that rude to me. The bagels were good, but there are lots of good bagels in NYC. Same for the vegetable soup. People near me were raving about the cranberry rolls, but said the tart yogurt smoothie was too tart. The place was a mess! No one bussed the tables and clearly they have plenty of patrons who don't clean up after themselves. There were literally small piles of garbage on the tables and the floor was littered with it. No reason to ever go there again.

Great spot with lovely food. Lots of options to choose from. Good bagels! Then pop next door to bakery!

We discovered this round the corner from our hotel and had a fab breakfast. It was full of locals (which I took to be a good sign), all eager to talk about the royal wedding once they realised we were English. I’d thoroughly recommend a visit together with the huge deli next door.

Fun place to shop on upper west side.. good deli bread and babka of course.. I love to watch the old ladies bickering over prices.. and making the scene real. staright out of Sienfeld

Browsed the shop. Has everything. Stopped by the deli next door for some cheaper eats. Sandwiches are pre-made there and toasted when you order. Black & white cookies were yummy. Smoothie was so so. There is one large table to eat at. Sit near the door, not at the end. We chose the end seats and didn't realize it was next to the bathroom. Not a good choice... Next time, I would get it and go.

Fantastic grocery store and bakery! It feels like old NYC. They have an amazing deli and cheese section. The attached bakery offers delicious coffee and baked goods.

Take a cooler bag when you go shopping at Zabar's so you can take home some of the amazing cheeses and meats. Don't forget to go upstairs for the kitchen store. Souvenir t shirts are less than $10.00 and aprons are less than $20.00. Their cafe next store has amazing cheese blintz.

the quality of food was very good. coffee had a lot of aroma and soup was just so smoothing on a cold day. great value for the price. Great meal place (especially for breakfast).

Disclaimer: I grew up an Ashkenazi Jewish kid in NYC. So for me, coming back to Zabar's was a Religious Experience. I was HOME. Better than being a kid in a candy store - I was a kid in a LOX store! REAL belly lox, not Nova! (Well, they have that, too. But why would you buy it?) The coffees, the breads and pastries, the cheeses, 18 kinds of smoked salmon. (That's just a guess - there might be more.) And the prepared foods! You could live in New York for 20 years, and never cook, as long as you can buy Zabar's prepared foods! Chicken, duck, salmon, brisket - who needs to eat out?! Yeah, so, it's not cheap. But the quality is unmatched. And while you're there, be sure to buy the latest edition of Zagat's, which is always on sale at Zabar's.

Ordered a cappuccino with almond milk and one Zabars famous Bagels and lox. It was delicious!!! Shared a table with a few others that seemed to be regular guests as they all new each other and everyone that came and out while I was sitting there. A great way to start a freezing New York City day.

Two years in a row we have received salmon roe/salmon pate/whitefish dip that arrive a week before Christmas and expire on 12/21. Unacceptable. We can't eat all of that that food in a few days. All of their goods should arrive with an expiration of at least one month away from date of delivery. Terrible. I am going to tell my friends to stop sending me their prepared foods for Christmas. Shameful.

After spending a fortune at Starbucks for breakfast, we found this place which offered a much wider range of food at a fraction of the cost. We picked up bits for a great tasting picnic in the park.

Stopped in for a bite in the late afternoon after seeing a matinee. Seating is a challenge but we snagged two together and enjoyed home made vegetable soup with a bagel and cheese blintzes with sour cream. Self service and crowded. Reasonable prices for good quality Zabars specialties. $8.50 for a bagel with lox, cream cheese, too ago and onion.

Several times a year we order online for delivery to us in Pa. No one can beat their bagels, lox and deli meats. The orders always come well packed. Prices are reasonable.

I had seen that Zabar's had a little cafe/restaurant off to the side of the grocery and decided to stop in for a snack. The place was really busy and a lot of the locals in the neighborhood were sitting around the main table gossiping with one another. What I liked was the choices of items for under $10.00. The woman in front of me ordered a chicken soup that looked good and came with a freshly baked roll that looked really good. I had the special which was a stuffed croissant with eggs, ham and cheese that was delicious for $1.00. I liked that deal. It was crisp and buttery on the outside and the filled was a tasty combination of breakfast items that blended well together. It was a nice deal for a quick snack and I highly recommend walking around Zabar's when you are in the 80's of the Upper East Side.

For a quintessential New York experience, do yourselves a favour and pop in to Zabar's. Great food and helpful staff.

We wanted to try an authentic bagel store and was told to try here. We just had bagels and cream cheese. We managed to grab a couple of seats. The bagels were large, fresh and tasty and well worth the walk. With drinks it came to $6 a bargain.

There were no seats and they pre make the sandwiches. They don’t put the cream cheese on a bagel and their attitude kinda sucks. The food was decent but they microwaved our potato latkes and they weren’t very good. The food was average but the actual place sucks to be in and eat at.

Second oldest place to be the home of the black and white. Very small eating area so you might have to get deli stuff to go but quality is exceptional.

I had the shared the Nova Scotia Salmon bagel, Croque Monsiuer and had achsi ice tea. The service was quick and efficient and the food was excellent. The Croque Monsiuer was particularly tasty.

An iconic New York deli. Especially good for breakfast and the seating ensures you will get to talk to the locals. Try the bagels and lox.

its a very complete assortment of fresh food with several options from the best bakery in the upper west side neighborhood. from eggs to ham & cheese hot croissants to delicious bagels and all sorts of coffee, the place is very crowded but its worth the inconvenience, if any.

The breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon and potatoes) was prepared earlier placed in a plastic tub and then reheated. We were reminded of airplane food. The ham and cheese panini was nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. Oj and coffee were nice.

This is our favorite food store in New York City. We love bagels, lox, and whitefish and this is absolutely the place to get it. The coffee is also excellent and the cheeses are great. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

We stopped in here as part of a TCM classic movies tour. It is so much fun. From the movie "You've Got Mail". Huge variety of choices for such a small store. Hot foods are sold on one side and the grocery on the other. I had a slice of fabulous thick pizza. I would have loved to buy some cheese and bread, but we still had two more hours of touring to do. This would be a fantastic spit to pick up a few things to keep in your room for snacking during your visit.

We stayed at a hotel nearby but breakfasted here every day. Friendly staff nice coffee and bagels. Chatted to friendly locals on a couple of occasions. We liked this place.

I read the reviews and decided to see for my self. What a waste of money. Bake was prepackaged. Could not have a toasted bagle with lax, lax spread, tomato and onion as should be. The bagle was the worst ever. To top it off, people were rude. I do not recommend.

I can never go to Panera again, this places bagels and coffee were to die for. So glad I could fit the coffee in my carry on! Highly recommend checking out the grocery area, so many things to eat. Cheese and meat. OMG yum

Zabar's is always worth a stop and it is the place to sample old world comfort foods. We take the train home from the city when we visit so our last day is always food shopping in the AM so that we have fun meals for the next few days at home. This trip we stocked up on stuffed cabbage and stuffed peppers, chocolate baklava, and some cinnamon rugelach....yum, yum and yum. They have pretty much everything you need to eat and it is always jumping. Lord knows how many movies have been filmed here...

This is the greatest deli that ever opened in Mew York. Just walking through it exhilarates the taste buds

The store has an incredible selection of everything. Olives? Tons of varieties. Cheese? I faint when I think about the selection. The deli is a great place to grab a quick meal and a relatively inexpensive one given the quality of the food. It's busy, so don't think you'll find a nice quiet table for a long meal, but you will find great quality food.

But this time was a mess. Was it because we went late afternoon instead of right in the morning? Could be... the coffee whih is usually amazing tasted a little burnt, and the bathroom in the deli was god awful. I know that's not why you go, but when you are eating so close to that environmental disater one tastes another look... since we went late in the day the store was out of a lot and it was crammed with people doing everyday shopping. So much so I felt bad for them just trying to shop while tourist swamped them. I WILL go back, but probably back in the am. Plus the amount of homeless people eating out of their trash was not a turn on.

We take a gourmet bus trip to NYC at least 1 time per year and Zabar's is a must. If you don't buy anything you must have had a big meal prior to going there. Most varied cheese selection I've ever seen. I like their strudel and chocolate croissants but there are lots of other goodies to be had. The kitchenware upstairs is something to behold--never knew there were so many gadgets. Enjoy this one and even buy something to cook/eat at home

A good family breakfast that has satisfied two teenage boys and well as their parents! The queue went fast and service was also quick. The no-nonsense staff is efficient, but try and order all in one go, when you have their attention! Despite this being a large place the room is not as noisy as other diners we’ve visited. We would definitely come back. I had waffles with fried eggs and sausages, and was very happy. The real maple syrup instead of the fake stuff at 1.75$ per small jar (1.6 oz, see photo) is hideously expensive. The chocolate chip pancakes with bananas were a hit. The fried chicken and waffles also appreciated although it was noted that the chicken could have been more flavorful. My guys totally loved the cinnamon bun. I found it too sticky and with far too much cinnamon.

We went a couple times for bagels/pastries. I found the food to be OK, but overpriced. The workers also didn't seem very friendly and it was almost like we were taking away from their day by purchasing items.

Why would you eat here? There are so many awesome places to eat in NYC. The food is dry or just reheated, it's crowded and even the coffee isn't fresh.

What else to say about Zabar other than it is for me one of New York City's landmarks. Coffee, prepared food, bread, salmon and so much more. You want eat everything there...

Honestly there was a time , when I worked and lived in NY in the 90's , when Zabar's ment quality, cleanliness, good service and top quality deli items. Wish I can say the same now. Was in NY two months ago, stopped by and gone are service and cleanliness. The quality of their once top rated salmon is a thing of the past. To bad the new salmon cutters never bothered to learn the craft from the old and gone guys of yesteryear. The eatery next door dirty, and service somewhat like in Mcdonalds or Burger King. Nothing special about Zabar's anymore. Gone is a true NY landmark. Reminds me of Macy's dept store today compared to 20 yrs ago. They are on the way out, and still don't get it as to why??

We walked over after visiting the natural history museum. I had the previously made salmon bagel. My wife had a ham and cheese panini sandwich that was the best that either of us ever had. Coffee was great. We bought cheese, bread, and salami at the Zabar's grocery next door. We liked the staff and regulars that we interacted with.

I always like to shop at Zabar's when I visit New York. They have an amazing variety of gourmet items. I always find something to bring home with me. I loved their coffee beans!

I came here with my boyfriend every day of our recent New York trip. We both loved it! Over the course of our three visits to the deli, we tried the B4 (breakfast sandwich), a blueberry muffin, a black and white cookie, a raspberry streudel, a cinnamon raisin bagel, an orange juice, and a small coffee. We loved everything and even took 5 black and white cookies home with us. I can’t recommend this place enough. The only thing to keep in mind is that it gets really busy so sometimes it can be hard to find a place to sit.

Zabars has amazing bagels, muffins and pastries. We love going here for a quick breakfast on the weekend. A must visit when in NYC!!

We stopped in for lunch and in all fairness, only went to the deli side and didn't go in the shop (we weren't in a position to take fun finds home with us, so avoided temptation there). The menu was a little overwhelming for me to navigate super fast, which I felt like I needed to do since the place was packed. I was still trying to choose when it was my turn to order, and ended up getting a slice of pizza and a cheese blintz. After, when I looked at more of what was in the cases, I wished I'd ordered differently. The pizza has a crazy amount of cheese and is pretty tasty, though nearly impossible to eat without getting it everywhere. The little plastic fork was way too flimsy to help, so I just picked it up and got covered with stuff (I like messy food, so it was fine). The blintz wasn't so great, which surprised me. My friend had a ham and cheese panini and said it was decent but not great, and she would've ordered something else too. She also got a knish to try and neither of us loved it. Maybe it's the reheating that makes it a bit rubbery? The ordering and receiving process is confusing and a little odd. You order when you hit the cases, then they tell you to go to the register to pay. We were lucky enough to find 2 seats, then waited for the food. They would mumble what the food in their hand was and unless you stayed right next to the case (which was nearly impossible with the amount of people in the tiny space) or spent time staring at the servers to read their lips, you missed your food. And the reheating took a pretty long time. Unfortunately, I didn't even realize they had smoothies since that menu is beyond the food menus on the wall and I was trying to figure out the food part. I missed out on a smoothie but had a decent bottled lemonade. Next time, I'd check out the store first, then go into the deli for baked goods instead of a full lunch.

I took only one trip off my Broadway haunts during my last visit to NYC and that was to visit Zabar's. The Deli is delicious to look at and Cafe next door perfect for Sunday morning bagels and a delicious crumb cake... The metro is near by and the trip from 42nd Street to 79th Street is quick and comfortable.

When I lived on W. 91st Street, I lined up at Zabar's every Sunday morning. That and the New York Times - the best way to spend a day.

Did a bit of shopping and picked up black and white cookies for my family - a requirement for my trip to NY. Best we ever had. I got myself a bagel and smoked salmon for breakfast - so good, classic NY! Great spot.

Located uptown just a few blocks west of the Natural History Museum. The store is to the left and huge to the left is the small sandwich shop. An everything bagel with cheese and mayo (yes am originally from the south) is a great meal with a cup of coffee. Afterwards go next door and grab a babka....I actually love the cinnamon over the chocolate sorry to say.

The place gets crowded, so expect to spend some time here. This place has it all including an amazing smoked fish counter where they slice the fish for you on the spot. The bakery and deli are both quite good. The staff is also super friendly and helpful. While they have "to go" foods this is more of a market than a deli and there is no where to sit inside. My only negative is that while their bagels are quite good, they do not have Salt Bagels.

Stopped in for a tried and true NYC nosh. We were hungry and had a few minutes to kill so we stopped and shared a "Nova Special": Nova salmon on a bagel with cream cheese, orange juice and coffee. This is seriously not at all what I expected from the advance billing at Zabars: absolutely no 'personal attention' - premade lox and bagel on a very bad bagel (soft like a roll and dry), meh cream cheese and ok nova. Premade, I stress. The tiny orange juice ("fresh squeezed") in a small, sealed plastic bottle was perhaps the best part of the meal: despite it's plastic enclosure it did taste fresh squeezed ish. The bagel disappointed. The coffee was ok. The bagel, in it's plastic wrapping (premade sandwich sitting around for how long?) was grease coated - likely from seepage from the lox. Or from the enclosed black olive. Not the most pleasing texture. The prices were ok - especially for NYC - but the experience was curt, about as impersonal as possible, and greatly disappointing. I come to NY a lot, so I'm used to NY service. This was curt even for NY, dismissive. Optimized to move people through, but still curt. The best thing about this whole experience were the other customers: clearly UWS regulars engaged in a lively discussion about art and the (ahem) election. Entertaining.

I AM 75 YEARS OLD.Going there all my life . go with lots of money, you will spend it all.In refernce to LETTHEEATINGBEGIN's REVIEW you do not order fish and cold cuts of meat through the mail. I am suprised he ate it.

What's a visit to New York City without a stop at Zabar's on the Upper West Side? We've been known, enroute from Boston to North Carolina, to drive into the city, braving the traffic, and then circle the 2200 block of Broadway a few times while a couple of us run into Zabar's. Zabar's is one of the great institutions of Manhattan, and a visit there is a treat for all your senses -- smell, taste, sight, touch and sound. The hundreds of kinds of cheeses, meats, breads and other foods, not to mention the people on both sides of the counters, are amazing. This December, a family member visiting friends in New York over the holidays brought us bagels from Zabar's. The bagels you get in the store are, in my opinion, much better than the ones you can order online from Zabar's. They just seem more authentic New York style, with a crusty outside and chewy inside. The ones I've ordered online seem more breadlike. I love the "everything" bagels. We also got some of Zabar's (very expensive) sliced pastrami, but I didn't think that was as good as I had remembered it.

This is a must for any foodie looking for the heart of NYC delicatessens (no not location – just The BEST stuff and selection). It is more of Jewish deli than some, but it is so eclectic which almost every ethnicity represented. They have the very best selection of cheese, salumis and smoked fish anywhere. Plus it has a wonderful coffee selection and an incredible kitchen store upstairs. The bakery and prepared foods are divine. Go there and take home or next door to the café to eat. The café doesn’t have as good a selection as the store but if you buy something from the store then get you beverages (or killer cookie) for the café, they’ll let you eat there anyway. We stop here every trip (about once a year) and it is never boring.

This is a great deli and small kitchen store. If you are on the upper west side, it is a must. I am tempted to say that if you want to be a real New Yorker, you have to go here. It is often crowded but there is an amazing variety of sfuff, from good coffee beans to nova scotia salmon to gourmet jellies and jams to unbelievable pastries to raisin pumpernickel (to die for but expensive) to gourmet olive oils..to .. get the picture? The checkout ladies are friendly and fast. go upstairs to look at wonderful cookware lots of random kitchen gadgets, espresso makers that are much more expensive than you care to buy, and on and on. Always has, and still is a wonder.

Terrible coffee, bad panninis. Place is crowded and they don't give you time to think about what you want to order. We had to throw the food and the coffee to the trash. 7$ for the pannini. Not that cheap.

Best deli in the UWS - everything you might want from a deli/groceria - and then some. The bakery items are fresh - don't miss the sourdough rye bread and Zabar's Blend coffee is delicious.

Visiting the city and had to visit Zabar's. This is not a fancy spot, but rather a line where you order and pay before sitting down. There are a few dozen stools where you share space with others. Don't plan to sit together if you're a large group. On to the food! We each had a bowl of matzoh ball soup and split a Reuben panini. I was a bit disappointed in the soup. The broth was not very flavorful. I prefer the flavor of Arnie's Deli, just down the street. The Reuben panini was very good, crispy and full of flavor. We also enjoyed a rugelach and a hamantaschen. They were also good. This is a great place to enjoy an authentic New York lunch. Shop next door in their store when you're finished.

Delicious corned beef and pastrami sandwich a bit small for $12 but fresh. Great coleslaw which i will try almost anywhere, this time not "liquidity"... Crunchy and delicious taste. You can buy almost any kind of food there, but seating is very limited. No heating of food if you wish to buy something like a knish, latke, bagel, bit no micro.

I have ordered from Zabars many times online. I find that their product arrives fresh ( we live in Oregon, so its quite a journey for the product). I wanted to write this review about their Cheesecake. My husband is a wana be NewYorker, he loves NY and says in his next lifetime he will live in NY. As a special treat I purchased their Cheesecake and WOWZA! It is AMAZING. We normally just get the typical lox, bagels and salad for Hanukkah. From now on I am going to include Cheesecake in our yearly order. It was smooth, creamy and not too sweet. Perfect balance of creamy goodness to gram cracker crust. Yummie!

Enjoyed this delicious restaurant. Only criticism was the small seating area which is more "community table" style. I expected more Jewish Deli but it's not that. The turkey panini was outstanding and the rugula second to none. No egg creams or corn-beef sandwiches here. There is a tiny bathroom in the back left corner of the deli. Not to be missed is the next door Zabar's grocery and household goods store!!! Kosher and non-kosher foods. Corn-beef is excellent. Wonderful cheese and olive selection and fish and baked goods.

Great quick lunch spot . Had the Mozoh soup and classic panini :) I would recommend this place for anyone. They also have an attached deli

It goes without saying that the bagels, hot chocolate and pastries of various kinds are wonderful and reasonably priced in this pricey city. What struck me the most was the sense of community, clients who were clearly regulars and well known. The staff showed gracious manners to everyone. Though busy (and it does get crowded) everyone was treated with kindness and respect. They boast of 35000 clients per week ( can that be right? -maybe I remembered wrongly!) But you can see why.

loved the food ,quiche meatballs ,coffee all excellent must go to also av cafe next door,we called in here most days just to pick bite up and the price was quite good they must sell hundreds of cheeses really nice place and staff very frindly

A nostalgic, Jewish style deli and market in Midtown Manhattan. I truly enjoyed a hot panini, a bowl of chowder and wonderful conversation with randomly met New Yorkers. Reminiscing about years gone by and culinary culture of different parts of the World that we all came from made us appreciate human connection and added to a pleasure to our meal.

Read reviews and decided to give Zabar a try. This was a serious error. My sandwich was horrible, the service abrupt and friendly and the decor low quality and tacky. Steer clear!

We visited the deli for lunch by local suggestion and and then went to the market which it attached. deli wasn't as great as i had expected. I got a panini and lobster bisque. The sandwich was bland and barely warm in the center but the soup was alright. Overall the deli seemed quite overated...but it was super busy so maybe others enjoyed it more than myself.

I’m his is a deli/grocery store, not an eat-in restaurant. I got assorted food to make my own charcuterie-ish dinner back at my hotel. Mortadella, liverwurst, several cheeses, a bialy, fruit. They have all kinds of classic NY foods: lox, smoked salmon, whitefish, chopped liver, etc.

Zabar's was our first taste of NYC! Literally dragging our suitcases along the pavement on our way to our hotel at night, we passed by Zabar's and were drawn in by how popular it looked and the sight of the food. It was difficult to decide what to grab from the deli as soooo many delicious looking choices! But BBQ'd Korean ribs it was, along with a gourmet salad made to go to devour in our hotel room. Not cheap, but oh so good quality. Next morning we ordered breakfast in the adjoining cafe and for us Aussies it felt the true NYC breakfast experience - wickedly delicious and good portions. Obviously has great reputation as it was packed and seemed mostly regular locals.

My wife ordered a Cheese a Prosciutto package for $150.00. In the description it said it included "aged parmesan". For That price, I assumed it had parmigiano reggiano, instead it had Bel Gioioso from Wisconsin, that I can buy at the local Walmart. At the most, the value of the food in the package, was $60, so I paid $100 fro the Zabar bag in which it came. Very disappointed.

I have always wanted to stop at Zabar's and so happy that we did last week. I purchased a wonderful box of assorted cookies for my cousin and she loved them. The selections just go on and on and on. Lots of samples to try. It truly is a gourmet celebration of New York. The Babka and Rugelach are outstanding. You have to experience this place in person. All my words would not do it justice! Their goodies boxes, baskets, and samplers are always a hit.

Maybe I'm weird, but I like to browse a grocery store whenever I travel. This last trip I stopped at Zabar's on my last day before heading off to the airport. This place is crammed full of interesting stuff. I stocked up on chocolate babka, black & whites, dark roast coffee and other NY-ish things, as well as a lox and bagel sandwich to eat in the park that day. Loaded everything directly into my own canvas shopping bag which I then carried on my flight back to Chicago. This will become a NY tradition for me. Life is good!

When I lived in New York I could not live more than one day without Zabars's. Just the best choice of great food, especially prepared dishes. Now as a tourist, I cannot resit going in there: a true New York experience and do not miss on buying their Nova Scottia salmon+ a bagel+ cream cheese just the best!

I used to live in nyc, and loved Zabar's. I'm not pleased that a gift package arrived today: the caviar expires in 1 week and the formaggion nonno nanni 1/3/23. This appalling. I order caviar all the time from other retailers and the caviar lasts at least 3 weeks (no more) but the cheese should last (which is foil wrapped and sealed) should not expire for 3-4 weeks if UNOPENED. Soft cheeses should last 1–2 weeks in the fridge after opening, but we're talking unopened here. There is no excuse for Zabar's to send out gift orders this close to expiration.

Zabar's is definitely about offering some of the finest European deli goods. This is a quadruple fronted establishment which offers everything to delight the palate in the way of: cheeses; olives; coffee; preserved meats; nuts; herbs and spices; cakes; and anything else you can think of. They offer a shipping service if you want to share your experience with someone across the globe. You can join their mailing list and receive a free Zabar's coffee mug. On the corner side of the establishment is a small food outlet: eat in or take out. There is a menu of modest proportions; there are ready made salads with ingredients from their very own fine foods section. You can wash that down with a coffee or a cold drink. You will have to compete with the locals for a seat at the canteen style table, among them school children having a snack on their way home from school. We met a housekeeper from Peru having a quiet snack on her way to work for the afternoon. This place is embedded and part of its community. There is nothing about the tourist here. There is a story to this store starting with two Jewish brothers who survived the holocaust. Banksy himself created a tribute to Zabar's. We had to navigate a complex train and bus trip to get to Zabar's, but we are so glad we did, especially after the trauma of visiting the tribute to gluttony under the guise of a must-have pastrami-on-rye experience several days earlier.

Visited as part of a "food crawl". I'm not a city kid, so crab walking sideways to move through may have influenced my experience. Just saying! Great bagels, OK (and pricey!) salmon with fantastic dill cream sauce. Great kitchenware shop with prices from good to ......really! A good experience, but I really wanted a good sandwich & didn't find a place to get it, that was a bit of a letdown. A great brunch today, but not something I'd consider a destination.

We were recommended this place as an authentic new york deli with delicious food and this isn't far off. It satisfied our 'traditional' experience but the food, although nice, wasn't anything overly special. We had two of the hot sandwiches/paninis and a pastry. It does get very busy so i would recommend arriving slightly before or after normal lunch hours.

It was a good thing that I was full from breakfast or my pocketbook would have suffered far more. This store has a great variety of prepared foods, desserts and specialties.

Stopped at this crowded and very small fast food place for a pick me up on a cold October night. A hot salmon chowder and a plain bagel were the perfect match. This lunch counter is attached to the big store next door and has the same high-quality food. Service is very quick and very pleasant. And Upper West Side institution.

What a place, amazing range of produce and cook wear. It's a shame we live in the U.K. As would have purchased all of the stock!!! Had a ciabatta in the cafe below which was hard to find a table as so busy with lunch rush. Amazing food.

I ate here for lunch one afternoon, and had their delicious clam chowder! Their menu was large, prices were great, and the food was yummy. Definitely recommend stopping by Zabar's, if you're on the Upper West Side!

As a non-New Yorker, I find the variety of food available in Zabar's to be incredible. The meats, the fish, the breads, the pastries, the cheeses, the prepared foods and even the vegetables boggle my mind. This is certainly not Kroger in Cincinnati. I was searching for acacia honey and found 6 different brands. I could buy a different cheese every day and still have some to try after a year. You name it and the food can be found somewhere in this store. Amazing.

The market is HUGE! It's interesting to see how people shop in other parts of the US. We ate breakfast at the cafe. It's open seating. We found some friendly locals & tried our best not to talk politics! The bagels were good, coffee is strong! It's an excellent environment to see locals! Love the UWS!!!

Stopped by as we were staying in the UWS and wanted to see what had changed in 10 years: nothing! Which is good news as Zabar's has always been a delight to visit, stroll around both floors and be tempted by...who knows what? If you're within a few blocks of W 80th see for yourself!

The market was wonderful. You could spend the day looking at all the food items. Picked up some great cheese and yogurt. My traveling companion got the bagel and lox which was previously made in their deli case. I guess they do such a large business that they make up the bagels and cream cheese and/or lox ahead of time. I chose NOT to have a bagel with cream cheese because I was behaving like a food snob and wanted to have it made for me fresh with a warm bagel. My loss I guess!

"Zabar's Deli & Gourmet Foods" is a landmark on Manhattan's Upper West Side! A real must go! The wide variety of gourmet products on display is just jaw dropping! I get thrilled by its cheese and bakery counters. Inside seating premises are rather limited (and busy), what makes buying in and eating out a better deal. If picnicking is on your plans, just get your basket ready! Central Park is just three blocks away! And the awesome American Museum of Naural History is even closer. Bon Appétit!

A good friend of ours sent us a care package by overnight delivery It was a 1/2 pound of Nova and a pound of pastrami. The pastrami smelled like a game animal and then had no flavor when we made sandwiches with it. I don't eat Nova, but my friend said it was very stringy and also lacking in flavor. For a place with such a good reputation, they failed miserably on their takeout or mail out orders. This is my first and probably last experience with Zabar's sorry to say as I was looking forward to trying their food.

Smoked salmon, sable, whitefish, corned beef, pastrami, bagels and every Jewish deli specialty is featured here at this emporium of eats. Pricey....yes...but it's New York. Ain't nothing like the real thing and Zabars is New York.

Great deli, lots to choose from. Fair prices. We had panini's, frozen yoghurt and both were great. It was a bit crowded but had a good atmosphere. Recommended.

We had to stop here because it's Zabar's. We solely sought out the chocolate babka to shove into our luggage and then shovel into our mouths with friends that weren't lucky enough to join us... but lucky enough to agree to watch our dog. So, so good. Buy some, then buy some more. They deliver nationally, so yeah, we'll be buying some more.

TO ALL THAT ENTER Prepared to be taken for granted. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Love the food/ hate the service people who work there, especially the prima donnas in the nova counter. One in particular,James, has an attitude you just want to slap out of him. Gods gift to Zabars. Doesn't get the order correct; is too busy glaring and sneering and kibitzing with his co workers to give a damn and every time I see him my blood pressure goes up. In general the people rarely smile unless you are a regular there and even than, rarely. The food is excellent but you pay a small psychic price to shop there. For out of towners, it's an experience but only a once in a while experience. Too crazy and manic even for a born and bred NYer.

Zabars has quite a variety of good quality prepared meals (chicken pot pie, a favorite) fish etc.. great choices in the bakery section, homemade breads, sliced right there, cheeses, and great coffee! It's a great place to do your food shopping or grab a few favorites.. Upstairs is a great kitchen supply and gadgets.. And ofcourse, great bagels!

I come here for the marvelous cheese selection and for the lox when it's time to eat bagels, cream cheese, onions, tomato, capers and smoked salmon. Plus the kitchen goods upstairs is fun.

It may be rude to criticise a deli that has iconic status in its home city, but Zabar's was less than impressive. Loud, crowded, patchy service. But mainly I had a huge issue with the large, loaf-like bakery products they sold as croissants. Guy, croissants should be light and flakey, almost melting when you eat them. What Zabar's was selling was tough, doughy, and hard work to chew through! Maybe I just caught them on a bad day ...

This is as authentic a Deli as it gets. Humble, amazing choice and superb quality food. Eat breakfast here everyday for a week, took part in local conversations and just took the vibe in. Always a place to visit on every trip to NYC. Amazing place.

I spent about 30 minutes wandering through Zabar's. I had read about it and wanted to see it for myself. I actually didn't buy a thing as I had recently finished lunch. But I considered my visit a bit like seeing a food museum. Cheese selection was so varied as to take my breathe away. Nice bakery. Upstairs there is a "kitchen" shop filled with about anything one could buy for a well stocked kitchen.

Great cheeses. Amazing Olive bar. It does get crowded but it is worth navigating through the store to find all the goodies. Make sure to visit the bakery section for a great selection of pastries, breads and other treats.

The store is amazing--the restaurant food is great but the ambience doesn't quite make it worth stay. Best way--get take out at either the store or the restaurant and head back to Central Park for a picnic-then do the Museum of Natural History

Cafe was a huge disappointment. Limited bagel choices, bland bagels, skimpy on the lox, runny cream cheese. There seem to be so many better choices in Manhattan- especially for bagels and lox.

I really liked the price of the bagels here (compared to another place i visited), it's pretty reasonable. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese. They toasted the bagel and it was quiet good, and the cream cheese came on the side which was nice too (not too much on it). The coffee was decent but a bit cold. My boyfriend ordered a bagel with smoked salmon but unfortunately these bagels are pre-made, so they're not spectacular. It was definitely a busy place, but the line moved quick. If you want just a bagel and cream cheese i would definitely recommend this place. They also have lots of other pastries you can try. We split a blintz, which was quite good.

If you know Zabar's you do not need a review. If you do not, it can come across as a bit touristy but it is a classic.

Next-door is heaven on earth for upper West side residence and for painful throughout the metropolitan area. This is a fast food place with a couple of long tables, no restroom and a wonderful staff of people serving primarily sandwiches soups and pastries of various types. Good coffee. Good cleanliness.

I always stop by when I'm in NYC for business or pleasure. This time it was for the soy cheese. Absolutely delicious. I have to figure out how to get them to ship it to me on the west coast. Love this shop. Bought plenty of goodies to take home and stuffed my suitcase whit exotic rices and basil gnocchi.

Three blocks from home. Just about everything edible, kitchenware too. Long hours, seldom calm. Shop early morning if possible.

My family was in NYC for New Years and had to make a stop at Zabar's Deli. My wife's aunt lived in Manhattan for most of her life and when we would come to visit (before she passed) we would always make a trip to Zabar's. We took the kids for breakfast and they did not disappoint. The bagels were as fresh as I have ever had, along with amazing coffee. It was a little difficult to get a seat, but that is the price you pay when there is a line out the door because of how amazing your restaurant is. Definitely going back the next time we are in New York.

Zabars has been a part of the Upper West Side longer than I have been alive and I am sad that I have only known it for 30 years. The grocery store is amazing! Bagels, Lox, Salmon, tea, freshly roasted coffee and baked goods GALORE! I'm droooooling just thinking about the chocolate raspberry brownies and the Hello Dolly Bars! The word gourmet doesn't even begin to describe this place and if anyone tells you they were on an eating tour of NY and did not go to Zabars they were either bamboozled or in NY Iowa, Texas, or Minnesota. Of course, not only do they have more gastronomical delights than most small cities there is also a HOUSEWARES section on the second floor. Be still my beating heart! The pots, pans, espresso machines, mugs, sets of dishes, and all things kitchen! I find the best presents and gadgets there. You can spend as little as a few dollars for a nail brush or hundreds on copper pots/pans and all things for the gourmand. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Just to make the wide variety of cheeses more binding, there is a restaurant, a teeny, tiny one, attached to the store the food is made on site, and equally delicious! There is a very small area in which to sit and eat so I suggest getting your for to go and walking right down the block to Riverside Park for a wonderful picnic! No matter when I go to NYC I always spend the last day or few hours if it's a 24 hour trip, to go to Zabar's and make my belly happy.

Sought out Zabar's during our wandering so on the upper west side. Always fun to just browse. Great selection of cheese, meats, specialty foods. Has a nice little sandwich shop, as well.

Great breakfast choice in this iconic deli. Slight let down was insipid coffee. Otherwise, everything I could have wished for

Simply the best. I have been coming here since I was a child and have never been dissapointed. It sounds corny, but it always seemed magical to me. From all the different smells, to all the people crowding around to order from the counters. They have the best gourmet foods from all around the world, and often give out samples. Pop into the little cafe next door that they own and try a sandwich or coffee. I highly recommend the Reuben!

I received Zabar's Bagels & Spreads Kit as a gift. The cost is $149, so you would not expect a dozen stale bagels nor all spreads expiration date to be 4 days after arrival. When I lived in New York Zabar's had a great reputation, but a big disappointment in no longer having a proactive customer service. I would. Ever shop there again as other alternatives do exist in Manhattan that stand behind the quality they ship

Zabar is the food lavers paradise. Personally I love the many cheeses . ( not always a healthy choices) but the taste is magnificent. It's a dream world. Olive and fish galore . Oh what a store! Of course everything alls is there also . Lot of European product. About the bakery I love the best the Freanch croassant. The do have flying in from France. But the Babka and the strudel also fantastic. If U s tourists or s native New-Yorker shouldn't miss out of Zabar. Prizes??? Not bad at all. Compare to New-York prizes it's more then OK.

Don't miss the chance to buy some food for a picnic, take back to hotel or just grab a piece of fruit. The stalwart food emporium on the west side is fabulous. Something for everyone- visitor and city dweller alike.

My family and I stayed in the Riverside Hotel down the street from this deli/grocery store. Every morning, my husband and I woke up early to have breakfast at Zabar's. The bagels and pastries are fresh so is their coffee. I have yet to try the lox but I guess when I come back (hopefully soon) now I'm back home here in Canada, I miss having my simple breakfast at Zabar's. I also like the grocery store, as I travelled with a child with celiac disease, they have a great selection of gluten-free items.

Wonderful deli with a fantastic choice. It's really worth coming. Prices are quite reasonable compared to other places. The blueberry muffins were so good, will come back again !

Good Coffee and breakfast. So much choice both in the shop and cafe area. You can buy a mug for $1.80 if you order a coffee. Very busy most mornings so prepare to sit close to strangers or wait for a seat. Worth it though.

Whenever I'm in NYC, I always make a trip to Zabar's for a panini. They're the best in the city. Seating is limited, but I've always found someone to chat with at the counter.

We loved the paninis from Zabars. Great bakery items too. Busy place but well worth any wait. Short distance to Central Park as well. We grabbed lunch to go and found great spots to picnic in the park. Great value in this authentic NYC deli!

Made a quick stop for lunch and had the vegetarian lentil soup and chicken Panini sandwich, maybe #11. The sandwich was fine and the seating is 1 long cafeteria style table where you will be sitting with others, which I don't particularly like but it's ok for lunch. The highlight though was the vegetarian lentil soup. It was amazing, amazing, amazing!

The restaurant has great sandwiches and desserts. At the market you will find pretty much any cheese you could want. They have a great deli counter. I tried three salads: tomato and arugula, Israeli salad, and Greek salad. All were great. Finally, I probably over-value places with friendly employees but so be it: everyone here was friendly. If I lived on the upper west side I would eat here at least once a week.

We love Zabars! The rye, sesame and plain bagels are my favorite! We love the plain and veggie cream cheese. The cherry cheese strudel is awesome as are the blintzes! Great local jewish specialty grocery store. Must visit when in NYC!

Really enjoy coming here after shopping at Zabars next door. The soups and sandwiches (bagels) are great for a quick meal. We always enjoy the dessert too.

Excellent choices for take- out, can also eat inside but sitting space is limited. Exceptionally good & convenient for breakfast. Lots of goodies to take home.

We purchased a sandwich for a picnic at Central Park. One sandwich (they are huge) is sufficient for two along with a couple of sides, dessert and beverages and we're set. Meal was fabulous.

Went to Central Park for a day and played frisbee, done some rowing and chilled. I had read about Zabars and made the 10 minute stroll to pick up some supplies. Made it perfect. Hot sandwiches, pastas, pizza, deli sandwich, salad and fruits! Brilliant pic nic for six for about $40! Try it. Awesome.

best regard! With strange hemis bought today at the end of the afternoon, cheese strudel and we found peach and some Kossar's bagels .... they came out with mushrooms, the cheeses if they came out good.In such a special and reputable place it is difficult to believe . We saw this now that we got to share at home

Each year when we visit NYC we always shop at Zabar's because they have fantastic food items that we can't find back in North Carolina. We also love going upstairs to the kitchen supplies store!!

Good food but rude staff. Definitely not. service with a smile and not at all helpful. The coffee was good and service quick but limited seating

Placed a mail order for an item that was clearly advertised as buy one/get one free. Only one of the items arrived. When I questioned it, I was told that I should have ordered 2 if I wanted one for free. They acknowledged that they were BOGO but refused to send me the free item because, according to them,I did not order it properly. Appallingly unaccommodating “customer service”.

Most incredible selection of a deli ever. . Every imaginable selection of meats and seafood ever . Vast selection of bakery goods, coffee, jelly spices and on and on. A must experience to walk through this deli

I've heard about this place, and I'm glad I finally got there. It's an experience. Gourmet grocery, to-go food counter, huge selection of specialty items. If you're in the area, I would definitely check it out.

Substandard in every respect - matzoh ball did not have matzoh flavor. No chopped liver. Reuben was panini and not on rye bread. Paper plates. Ridiculous. We went based on TripAdvisor. However while there another customer told us about pastrami queen on the upper east side and Russ and Addies on the lower.

Zabar’s makes great bagels, and overall the breakfast is worth checking out if you haven’t been. A lot of tourists come here.

These were the Best Bagels anywhere! Fun atmosphere and great service. Huge selection of more goodies than we could take with us....

Near the Riverside Tower Hotel, where we stayed, good food and drinks at a good price. Great for breakfast, sets you up for the day.

Zabar has it all. Good choices if food, prepared foods as well. Great cheeses, amazing bread! Favorite is rye with and without seeds. Good desserts and so on.. Upstairs, wonderful kitchen gadgets, pots and pans, cookware, mixers, toasters etc... Always a good stop for locals as well as those visitng.

Zabars is an awesome little store and their chocolate babka is to die for!! Later on in our trip (after finding myself still thinking about that babka), I went on their website and placed an order to ship some goodies to some relatives... during checkout I put the wrong address in the "Ship To" line. I called their customer service hotline and they were genuinely friendly and helped me get my order fixed up in no time. Thanks Zabars!

Great food and it was very delicious. The shop is great. Really nice place in New York and a must on your trip!

We go to Zabar's at least twice a year. It's very crowded and can be difficult to maneuver but it's worth it. Great selection and great food! If I lived in the city, we'd be there every week!

This place is great we went twice for breakfast and the cinnamon bagel are to die for and it's busy busy

Of anything. Bagels and lox are favorites! Also the famous chocolate babka. Very close to the park for a fabulous picnic.

I want one of these in my town. Actually, I would settle for one within 50 miles. I get emails from them and I am in Houston, tx.

There is absolutely nothing here that’s gluten free. Most other places cater for food allergies and have one or two things on offer at least.

So many options and a great place to eat cheap! Got an awesome bagel! Service is fantastic! Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a good cheap place to eat!

During my trips to the city I almost always stop in for the bagels. Just got back from another trip and they did not disappoint. You can count on consistent good food. Well worth it
Local Favorite
Touring with a group of 8th graders on a NY trip and we stopped for a quick breakfast at this charming restaurant. There is a full deli/grocery next door. It was obvious that this was a local favorite. Many neighbors were enjoying a cup of coffee, conversation and a fantastic bagel. Fast service. Yummy food. I had the Almond Milk steamer. Super delish!
