Essential Skills for Travelers: Be Prepared for Your Trip
In the summer of 2025, I finally arrived at my long-cherished destination—Chengdu. I'd originally planned to visit Chengdu in winter, fearing the summer heat, but that didn't happen. Summer vacation arrived, but I decided to visit Chengdu anyway. After researching the weather over the past three years, I found that Chengdu doesn't have many high-temperature days in late July, so I decided to set off at that time. (As expected, the temperature stayed below 33 degrees Celsius most days, which was quite comfortable.) Most museums in Chengdu are relatively easy to book, but reservations are still required in advance, and accommodation near popular scenic spots is especially important. Below is a travel guide for this trip.
To reduce travel expenses, I bought a ticket arriving at Tianfu Airport at 11pm. It was my first time flying Chengdu Airlines, and to save space, the seats were designed like this:
Because it was late, after arriving in Chengdu, we did not choose to go directly to the city center. Instead, we booked a hotel nearby to rest. There was a free airport shuttle to take us to the hotel. We chose the Ibis Hotel. The biggest advantage was the rich breakfast variety. We could sleep until we woke up naturally the next day, have dinner, and then set off to the city center.

DAY 1 Jinsha Site Museum-Sichuan Museum-Shu Brocade Museum-Du Fu Thatched Cottage
Although Chengdu Tianfu Airport is farther from the city than Shuangliu Airport, the transportation is still very convenient. We chose to take the subway and took a bus to arrive at the first attraction of this trip-Jinsha Site Museum.

On August 16, 2005, the Shang and Zhou Dynasty Sun Bird gold ornament pattern stood out from more than 1,600 candidate patterns and became the symbol of China's cultural heritage. It is also the core pattern of the Chengdu city logo.

The optimism and open-mindedness of Sichuan people can be seen from the unearthed pottery figurines. Unlike cultural relics unearthed in other places, the pottery figurines here are all cheerful.

Very close to the Sichuan Museum and Du Fu Thatched Cottage is the Chengdu Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum, which houses a wealth of Shu brocade and embroidery pieces. I had just watched the TV series "Shu Brocade Family" a while ago, and was curious about what the legendary and extremely valuable Shu brocade looked like, so I went to see it, and it was indeed beautiful.

After visiting the Shu Brocade Museum, I scanned a shared bicycle and rode to Du Fu Thatched Cottage. I felt that the scenery of this scenic spot was very beautiful, a bit like the gardens of Jiangnan.

Sculpture in front of the gate

We entered from the east gate of Caotang, first toured the park, and then walked through the halls and courtyards.
Because we had been wandering around all day and didn’t enter the park until 6pm, the lights in Du Fu Thatched Cottage had already started to light up.

For dinner, we had Bingge pea noodles near the hotel, which was very delicious.

It was already 7:30 when we got back to the hotel after dinner. The sun was still high in Chengdu.
DAY2: Worship the Dujiangyan Watershed and seek the Dao at Qingcheng Mountain
I got up at 6:00 this morning, had breakfast near the hotel, took the subway to Xipu Station, and transferred to the high-speed rail to Lidui Park Station (Dujiangyan City). The high-speed rail took half an hour and cost 10 yuan. Xipu Station isn't just any high-speed rail station, but rather an intercity high-speed rail station, serving only short-distance trains to Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain. The trains are also different, more like subway cars with horizontal seating, with only four carriages per train. I originally bought a round-trip ticket from Xipu Station to Lidui Park, but upon arriving at Xipu Station, I discovered I could return directly from Qingcheng Mountain Station, eliminating the need to return to Dujiangyan. So, I refunded my ticket and bought a new return ticket. Lidui Park Station is close to the entrances to Guanxian Ancient City and the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, making it very convenient for exploring the scenic area. We chose to enter through Gate 6, enjoying a bird's-eye view of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System before descending past Erwang Temple and down to Yuzui for a closer look at the Irrigation System. Get off at Lidui Park Station and walk a few steps to the top of the giant panda viewing platform.

It’s a bit regrettable that there is no museum or exhibition hall in Dujiangyan Scenic Area, so I couldn’t get a detailed understanding of the overall project of Dujiangyan. I just had a quick look.
To the right of the Dujiangyan gate is the South Bridge, where the internet-famous Blue Tears of the South Bridge is located. However, you need to turn on the lights at night to see it. It gets dark very late here, so we didn’t plan to see this view. Across the South Bridge is the ancient city of Guanxian, where we had lunch.

After lunch, we hurried to Qingcheng Mountain. There's a direct bus to the scenic area near the Dujiangyan Scenic Area for 10 yuan, which takes about an hour. I bought some fresh figs while waiting. There's also a direct bus from the Qingcheng Mountain High-Speed Railway Station to the scenic area for 20 yuan.

Takeout for dinner: Mom's Pig's Feet.
I walked 30,000 steps that day. My son went to the Ancestral Temple even more than I did, so he walked 40,000 steps. We also took the cable car up and walked down, so my legs were extremely tired and my calves were sore. I highly recommend those with limited stamina to take the cable car up and down, then walk to Tianshi Cave, the filming location for Journey to the West. The path from Shangqing Palace to Chaoyang Cave is extremely steep, with narrow steps, making it challenging to climb up or down, and a real test of stamina.
DAY 3 Sanxingdui: A Dialogue Across Millennia
Today's main quest: Visit Sanxingdui and explore the wonders of civilization. The Sanxingdui Museum is located in Guanghan. From Chengdu, you can take the high-speed rail or a direct bus to the Sanxingdui Scenic Area. The bus stops below the panda climbing wall sculpture at Chunxi Road IFS. The bus ride takes 1.5 hours and costs 25 yuan one way, 45 yuan round trip. It goes directly to the main entrance of the scenic area.

DAY4 Qingyang Palace - Wuhou Temple - Jinli - Chengdu Museum
My calves were still sore when I woke up this morning. The aftereffects from descending Qingcheng Mountain were still lingering. Luckily, we'd mostly been sightseeing in the city these past two days. If we'd gone to Jiuzhaigou, the leg pain would have prevented us from fully enjoying the scenery. The hotel we stayed in wasn't far from Qingyang Palace. Our previous trips had mostly been in the western part of Chengdu, so we booked a hotel near the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine subway station, which was close to everything.

We exited from the back door of Wuhou Temple, and the Jinli Street District was right outside. This is a modern block of imitation antique buildings. I think it's a tourist street based on the Wuhou Temple. But the prices here are cheaper than those in Kuanzhai Alley, and small figurines and refrigerator magnets are very cheap.

Coming out of the Chengdu Museum is Tianfu Square, where you can take the subway.

The central sculpture of Tianfu Square, set against the blue sky and white clouds, is as beautiful as a painting.
We had another hot pot dinner that night, this time ordering the simmered mandarin duck hot pot.
We found a hotel near Chengdu East Railway Station for the night. Since we had to get up early the next day to catch the high-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhaigou Station, it was convenient to stay close.
DAY5 Huanglong Scenic Area – Fairyland on Earth
The Huanglong Scenic Area (5A-rated) is located in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, 100 kilometers from Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The main attraction here is the vibrant travertine pools, which offer a completely different view from Jiuzhaigou. Traditionally, traveling from Chengdu involves taking a bus or a tour group, but the journey is quite long, typically taking over six hours. Our route was to take the high-speed rail (about an hour and a half) to the Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou High-Speed Railway Station. This station is located directly between the Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou scenic areas. From the station, you can transfer to a tourist bus (I purchased my bus ticket in advance through the Jiulv Yuexing mini-app). The bus from Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong takes half an hour (28 yuan), and to Jiuzhaigou takes two and a half hours (51 yuan). We first visited Huanglong, then took a bus to our hotel near the Jiuzhaigou scenic area gate. The next morning, we arrived at Jiuzhaigou for about eight hours, then boarded a bus three and a half hours early to Songpan Station for the high-speed train back to Chengdu. These direct bus times for scenic areas generally correspond to the departure and arrival times of the high-speed trains, making them very convenient.

Distinctive decorations on the high-speed rail

A very small high-speed rail station (the temperature in Chengdu was 32 degrees Celsius, and after getting off the high-speed rail, the phone showed that the temperature here was 10 degrees Celsius)

There is an escalator as soon as you exit the station, and going up the escalator is the parking lot for the scenic area direct bus.

The tourism services in various parts of Sichuan are very good.

The Huanglong Scenic Area cable car
After reaching the top of the mountain, you can take a sightseeing bus to the Five-Colored Pool. However, you need to purchase sightseeing bus tickets on the Aba Tourism app four days in advance (limited to 5,000 tickets per day). Tickets are not available on-site at the top of the mountain. We didn't buy sightseeing bus tickets, so we walked over 2,400 meters on the forest plank road to reach the Huanglong Back Temple. Next to the temple is the wooden plank road leading to the Five-Colored Pool.

There is a viewing platform after getting off the cable car. The scenery is very beautiful.

It is very comfortable to stroll in the forest.

Looking at the Five-Colored Pond from afar on the plank road, it truly is a fairyland on earth, incredibly beautiful.

The altitude here is about 3,500 meters, and my son developed symptoms of altitude sickness and felt very uncomfortable. (It is recommended to bring an oxygen tank when you come, which will make you more comfortable)

Such a Five-Colored Yaochi is so beautiful, nature's natural palette

Various photos with the Five-Colored Pool

I had lunch at the scenic spot at noon.

I took photos while walking, and the scenery everywhere was very beautiful.

I feel that any photo I take can be used as a computer desktop.

At an altitude of about 3,000 meters, my son's altitude sickness was basically gone.
The biggest feature of Huanglong Scenic Area is that it changes the scenery as you move. Strolling along the long wooden plank road, the same travertine pool presents different scenery from different angles. For me, if I have to choose between Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, I will choose Huanglong.
After leaving Huanglong Scenic Area, you can see the scenic area through bus in the parking lot. It takes nearly 3 hours to drive to Zangwang Square near the gate of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. Our hotel is opposite, which is very convenient.

DAY6 Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area (5A is the upper limit of the scenic area, not the upper limit of Jiuzhaigou)
Then go to the second floor and queue up to enter the park. Jiuzhaigou Valley is indeed a famous 5A-level scenic spot. The management and sightseeing bus scheduling are very orderly. With a square of people, the queue is very fast. Verify your ID card to enter the park, then line up directly to get on the sightseeing bus (it is recommended to sit on the left side, so you can see the blue sea on the bus). After arriving at Nuorilang Central Station, our car was assigned to the primeval forest route. My son and I took the car under Jianzhu Sea, then took the bus to Panda Sea, walked to Wuhua Sea and Pearl Beach Waterfall, and then took the bus to Nuorilang Center for lunch. After that, take a bus to Changhai, walk to Wucai Pond (the most beautiful lake in Jiuzhaigou), take a bus to Nuorilang Center, walk to Nuorilang Waterfall, take a bus to Rhinoceros Sea, walk to Shuzheng Waterfall, overlook the Shuzheng Sea, walk to Shuanglonghai Waterfall, take a bus to the scenic spot gate at 3:30 pm, take the scenic spot express train to Songpan High-speed Railway Station, and it is already 9:30 pm when you return to Chengdu. Take the subway to the hotel to rest. We spent less than 8 hours in the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area and gave up on scenic spots such as the virgin forest, Reed Sea, and Shuzheng Village. When I first took photos, I recorded what kind of sea I was visiting, but then I forgot about it. Now that I look at the photos, I can’t remember where they were. The seas in Jiuzhaigou all look similar, but Wucai Pond is different, and the beauty is more special.

DAY8 Happy Return
The flight was at three o'clock in the afternoon, so I walked around in the morning and bought Chengdu's famous "palace cakes" and Zhang Feiyingdeng beef and other specialties. I had a cold pot of bullfrog fish at noon, and then took the subway to Tianfu Airport and returned home smoothly, ending my pleasant trip to Chengdu.

Tianfu Airport is so big. After security check, you still need to take the transfer subway in the terminal to get to the boarding gate

Chengdu left a very good impression on me. Food and beautiful scenery are everywhere, and the sense of relaxation from ancient times to the present also makes people feel very comfortable. Although there are still many scenic spots that I haven’t visited, I don’t feel regretful because I believe that I will come to Chengdu again in the future.
