Shangri-La is virtually free of human damage and pollution, boasting an abundance of natural resources. Wild medicinal herbs abound, including cordyceps, white snow tea, red snow tea, fritillaria, gastrodia elata, angelica, snow lotus, saffron, and musk. Meili Snow Mountain is even known as the "Medicine Mountain" for its abundance of wild medicinal herbs. Shangri-La has a large Tibetan population, and Tibetan medicine is renowned, including Seventy-Flavor Pearl Pills, Twenty-Five-Flavor Pearl Pills, and Changjue, all of which are made from a variety of precious herbs and boast remarkable therapeutic benefits.
Shangri-La also boasts a variety of Tibetan handicrafts, including Dzi beads, silver knives, wooden bowls and boxes, silver protective Buddha boxes, and Tibetan incense. Most are beautiful and have a distinctly ethnic feel. Tibetan delicacies are also a must-try in Shangri-La, with curds, yak meat, matsutake mushrooms, and highland barley wine being popular choices.
When buying a Tibetan knife, it's best to ask the store to issue an invoice stating it's a "craft" to avoid any hassles. Tibetan knives are strictly prohibited on airplanes. Whether they're prohibited on trains or buses depends on the situation. Mailing them back via the post is the safest option.
There are many unique shops in the ancient city, which contain many exquisite and beautiful little things that can be given to friends.
