Feishayan

飞沙堰

The Feishayan spillway, also known as the "flood discharge channel", is the second largest main project in the Dujiangyan water conservancy project.
Through ingenious design, it can dredge floods, divert water, and has a powerful sand and stone removal function.
This is also the key point of Dujiangyan to ensure that the Chengdu Plain is not affected by floods.
The best option is to go to the mountain of Erwang Temple and overlook Feishayan.

Feishayan, which may seem ordinary, is the key to ensuring that the Chengdu Plain is not affected by floods. Its main function is that when the water volume in Neijiang River exceeds the upper limit of the Baopingkou flow rate, the excess water will overflow from Feishayan. In the event of an extraordinary flood, it will collapse on its own, allowing a large amount of river water to return to the main flow of the Minjiang River.

Feishayan, spillway. In ancient times, it was called "Jianshui River", which means flood discharge and sand discharge. Located at the end of Jingang Dike, it has a 200-meter-wide opening from south to north at a certain elevation (2.15 meters from the riverbed to the river surface). When the water volume of Neijiang River is small, it blocks the water to enter Neijiang Irrigation Area; when the water volume of Neijiang River is large, it discharges the excess water to Waijiang River. Moreover, due to its clever location design, it has a strong sand and stone discharge capacity and can discharge the sand and stones that flow into Neijiang River, so it is called Feishayan.

By Fairytale CORN |

Compared with the Fish Mouth, the Feishayan next to it looks quite ordinary. It looks ordinary, but it can filter the silt in the river like a big sieve, so that the silt will not settle downstream and cause the disaster of river flooding.

By XX |

A large gap on the south side of the Jingang Dike is the Feishayan, which is a very low weir. Its function is to overflow the weir when the water volume of the inner river is too large and re-enter the outer river, thereby reducing the risk of flooding downstream due to excessive water levels in the inner river. Since we visited during a rare flood period in Sichuan and the water volume of the Minjiang River was huge, the Feishayan played a role at this time, diverting too much water from the inner river. The weir of the Feishayan was therefore covered by the river water and could not be seen. Another function of the Feishayan is to form a vortex in combination with the surrounding terrain. The silt in the inner river will be entrained by the vortex and then thrown to the Feishayan, thus reducing the silt content in the inner river water and facilitating downstream irrigation.

The Fish Mouth, the Feishayan and the Baopingkou are really useful. You will only understand their mysteries after listening to the storytelling explanation of the tour guide. In short, the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project consists of three major parts: the Fish Mouth Diversion Dike, the Feishayan Spillway and the Baopingkou Inlet. It scientifically solves the problems of automatic diversion of river water, automatic sand discharge and control of water inlet flow, eliminates floods and makes the western Sichuan plain a "land of abundance" where "water and drought are controlled by people".

If they are allowed to flow down the inner river, they will silt up the Baopingkou and the irrigation area. Feishayan is really considerate and takes things into consideration. It throws the silt and pebbles brought from the upstream, and even boulders weighing thousands of pounds, into the outer river from here (mainly by cleverly using centrifugal force), ensuring the smooth flow of the inner river. It is indeed a masterpiece of nature.

From Yuzui, walk along the Neijiang River towards Lidui Park for about 900 meters and you will arrive at the Feishayan. The main function of the Feishayan is that when the water volume of the Neijiang River exceeds the upper limit of the Baopingkou flow during the flood season, the excess water will automatically overflow from the Feishayan. Another function of the Feishayan is to "fly sand". The water flow from the Feishayan into the outer river generates vortices. Due to the centrifugal effect, mud, sand and even boulders will be thrown over the Feishayan, so it can also effectively reduce the sedimentation around the Baopingkou.

The long dike below Yuzui, which divides the inner and outer rivers, is called Jingang Dike. In spring, autumn and winter, it is a smooth road for people to travel between Lidui Park and the cable bridge. In flood season, waves splash here, which is the flood discharge channel of Neijiang River. "Deep dredging and low weir construction" is a famous saying of water management in Dujiangyan. Dashing refers to the deep dredging of the Feishayan section and the Neijiang section. The standard of deep dredging is the "lying iron" pre-buried deep in the river bottom by the ancients. The annual dredging should be done until the lying iron is reached, which is just right to ensure the water supply for the irrigation area. Low weir construction means that the Feishayan has a certain height. If it is too high, more water will enter, and if it is too low, less water will enter, which is not suitable.

Feishayan is one of the three main parts of the entire Dujiangyan. First, go to Fulong to see Baopingkou and the entire panoramic view of Feishayan. After Fulongguan, you can walk to Feishayan. The main function of Feishayan is that when the flow of Baopingkou reaches the upper limit, the excess water will flow out of Feishayan; and the other function is to throw the mud and stones in the river into the outer river through centrifugal separation, so as to ensure the smooth flow of the inner river. In Dujiangyan, we did not hire a tour guide, but because there were so many tour groups, we could hear different tour guides talking about different things by standing in the same place for a while, but they were basically the same. I really can't understand it by myself.

By Love Xi Tong |

The principle of Feishayan is as follows:

1. When the water volume of Neijiang River exceeds the upper limit of Baopingkou flow, the excess water will overflow from Feishayan by itself; in case of a severe flood, the dam will burst by itself, allowing the river water to return to the main flow of Minjiang River.

2. "Flying sand" uses the principle of gravity to throw the silt and pebbles brought from upstream into the outer river from here to ensure the smooth flow of the inner river

The scenery is also beautiful, all in the scenic area, and it is worth a visit.

By Raycd |

Feishayan is the essence of the Dujiangyan project. It is a waterway with a higher riverbed, used to prevent excessive floods and pebbles from entering the inner river. In the past, there was a road that crossed the middle and connected Lidui and Yuzui. It was the throat of the scenic area. There were stone cages on both sides to adjust the discharge level and prevent the river from flooding the road too frequently. However, it was still quite risky to pass through this road. In summer, the river water often rose rapidly and flooded the road. Later, a sluice gate and bridge were built on one side of the road (in the photo), so tourists no longer had to worry about wading through the water, but it also lost some of the fun of adventure.

Its main function is to allow the excess water to overflow from the Feishayan when the water volume of the inner river exceeds the upper limit of the Baopingkou flow. In the event of a major flood, it will also break its own embankment, allowing a large amount of river water to return to the Minjiang River. I went to the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project Scenic Area on New Year's Day last year. I used my student ID to get half-price tickets for more than 40 yuan, which I instantly felt was a good deal. Feishayan is part of the water conservancy project. I felt a little cold when I was standing on the side taking pictures. It was cloudy when I went there. If it was summer and the weather was good, the water flow would be faster and more spectacular. Feishayan is also one of the most suitable places for taking pictures in the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. Next to it is the place where you can buy tickets for the sightseeing bus. It takes a while to walk from the gate to Feishayan. If you continue to walk forward, the scenic spot is a little far away, so it is very suitable to start taking the sightseeing bus here, and it only costs 15 yuan for a round trip.

By Follow the wind |

Feishayan is also part of the Dujiangyan Project. The Dujiangyan Project is divided into three parts: Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou! Feishayan plays a huge role. When the water volume of the inner river exceeds the upper limit of Baopingkou, the excess water will overflow from Feishayan. In case of a major flood, the embankment will collapse automatically, allowing the river water to return to the main flow of the Minjiang River. Another function is "flying sand", using the principle of gravity to throw the silt and pebbles brought from the upstream into the outer river from here to ensure the smooth flow of the inner river. This is the huge role of Feishayan, so I have to be deeply impressed by the wisdom of the ancients! You must go and see it!

Feishayan. It is used to divert floodwaters and is also the location of the four sleepers in Figure 2. From a distance, the water flows in two directions, one to the left and the other to the right. Usually the water flows to the right and enters Baopingkou. When the water is too strong and passes over Feishayan, the overflowing water will flow to the left and enter the river on the left. It is not the real flood season yet, so there are still grasses on the left.

By xlb227 |

This mountain was specially created under the guidance of Li Bing, it was not formed naturally, and it reflects the wisdom of the ancients.

By Tianjin Lao Hu |

Feishayan: located upstream of Baopingkou, between Jingang Dike and Renzi Dike. It is built by stacking pebbles in bamboo cages to regulate water volume and wash sand. When the water level of Neijiang River is too high, the flood will overflow Feishayan and flow into Waijiang River, ensuring that the amount of water passing through Baopingkou is not too large; at the same time, after the water flows into Neijiang River, the local river flow still belongs to the slightly curved river section. Under the effect of the bend circulation, the bottom water flow points to Feishayan, and the bottom flow crosses the top of the weir. Pebbles and high concentrations of suspended sand near the bottom can be effectively discharged to Waijiang River, which can effectively reduce the deposition of silt around Baopingkou. In order to observe and control the water volume of Neijiang River, Li Bing also carved three stone piles and placed them in the water to determine the water level by "not flooding the feet in low water and not exceeding the shoulders in flood water". He also chiseled a stone horse and placed it in the middle of the river as a standard for washing the beach when the water volume is the lowest each year.

By tina_little day |

One of the three major projects of Dujiangyan, it is also the last barrier. There is no artificial gate to open, and it completely uses natural principles to ensure flood discharge and sand removal. I can't help but sigh at the wisdom of the ancients. It's just that the embankment was originally built with bamboo cages and pebbles, which needed to be repaired every year. Now it has been changed to concrete pouring, which is once and for all.

An introduction to Feishayan. But what’s strange is that there are Korean and Japanese words on it, but no English, which is the most common word.

After taking the photos, ZZ and I ran to the riverside to take more photos of the scenery while waiting for the main group. The water here is still very fast, with white waves roaring all the way. I like this kind of green on the other side of the river. When we were taking a boat tour on Poyang Lake, the green on the Shizhong Mountain on the shore was also like this, as if it was nourished by the rushing water below the mountain to be so moist.

Standing by the river and looking into the distance, you can see the vast water and the faint green mountains. Before the construction of the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, when the Minjiang River flooded, the Chengdu Plain below became a vast ocean, and in the dry season, it was a barren land with no harvest. The emergence of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System not only played a role in flood prevention, but also dredged the turbulent Minjiang River and irrigated the Chengdu Plain, making it a land of abundance with fertile fields. Can it be said that without the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, China's history might have been rewritten?

A scenic spot of the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, magnificent and beautiful.

As part of the Dujiangyan hydraulic project, the scenery is average, but from the perspective of appreciating water conservancy projects, it embodies the wisdom of the ancients and is worthy of appreciation.

Located in the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, the ticket price is 90 yuan. The environment here is very good and there is a viewing platform specifically for taking photos.

The viewing platform of Feishayan has now been occupied by these people. When we came here before, there was no fence at all and we could take pictures at will on the viewing platform. But now it is completely impossible. If we want to take pictures, we have to ask them to help us, and it costs money.

The flood discharge channel was named "Shilang Weir" and "Golden Dike" in the Tang Dynasty, and later named "Jianshui River". It has the remarkable function of discharging flood water and sand, so it is also called "Feisha Weir".

By Thoughts |

The Feishayan Weir was built to ensure that there are no disasters in the inner river. A bend was built in front of the spillway to allow the river water to form a circulation. When the river water exceeds the top of the weir, the mud and rocks carried in the flood will flow into the outer river, thus preventing the inner river and the Baopingkou waterway from silting up.

The second flood discharge channel of Dujiangyan is basically a grass dam in the low-water season. The spectacular Feishayan can only be felt in the flood season in summer. Feishayan can not only divert floodwaters to protect the Chengdu Plain from water damage, but also use centrifugal force to separate sediment from the Neijiang River. With Feishayan, the Neijiang River is not blocked, so that Dujiangyan is still in use today. From Lidui Park to Yuzui, you have to cross Feishayan. You can take a sightseeing bus to Yuzui at Feishayan, which costs 10 yuan for a one-way trip and 15 yuan for a round trip. Feishayan is also the best place to watch Lidui, where you can see the spectacular scene of the river water pouring into Baopingkou.
