Hailuogou Camp 4, at an altitude of 3,600 meters, is the epitome of the scenic beauty of the Hailuogou Scenic Area. From the moment you board the cable car to Camp 3, the action begins.
It's worth mentioning that reaching Camp 4 requires a ride on its distinctive high-altitude cableway, offering panoramic views of the vast icefall, which plunges 1,100 meters, and the main peak of Mount Gongga, which rises over 7,000 meters above sea level. You can also experience a close encounter with the glacier. Before your eyes, you'll be greeted by a boundless world of ice and snow, with glaciers frozen for millennia beneath the snow. This is an experience you've never experienced before, awe-inspiring. Camp 4 currently has no accommodations and is the terminus of the newly built Hailuogou Glacier Cableway.

I went there in winter. The white on the ground and the blue of the sky formed a sharp contrast. As a southerner, I had to scream to show my respect for the snow. The scenery at Camp 4 was completely different from what I saw below. The scenery was beautiful. It was worth going up if the weather was good.
It's very impressive when the weather is good, but the queue for the cable car is a bit long, so you need to plan your time well.
It must be a sunny day. Behind Glacier No. 1 is the famous Gongga Snow Mountain, which you can watch calmly.
The core scenic area of Hailuogou, the big icefall, and glaciers 1, 2 and 3 are all here.
Unfortunately, the fog still didn't disperse after we climbed up the mountain, and we could hardly see the majestic outline of the glacier. Only a small corner of it was revealed when the wind blew away the clouds and mist. This was the biggest regret of this trip.
Although we didn’t see the glacier as we had hoped, walking in the snow-covered forest was also very beautiful. It was truly a world of ice and snow!
Camp 4 is the final point that visitors can reach. It is not far from the cable car station. Going higher is only accessible by professional mountaineering teams.
Seeing the snowflakes dancing in the air, the world of ice and snow blanketed the sky. This southern girl, seeing snow for the first time, danced with joy, and her phone was so excited that it ran out of oxygen. The snow fell heavier and heavier, like white sugar floating in the sky. The snow was so thick that we could have snowball fights and build snowmen, but it also obscured the beautiful glacier scenery we had originally come to appreciate.
The mist was swirling around, and after every two steps, my hair and eyebrows were covered with water droplets. Countless people on the observation deck were waiting, waiting for a gust of wind to drive away the mist.
After a short wait, the fog began to clear, and I could vaguely see Glacier No. 2! The distant rumbling sound initially misjudged thunder, but there was only thunder and no lightning. Later, when I zoomed in with my SLR camera, I realized it was the sound of the glacier collapsing and forming an icefall!
There is plenty of water here, and wherever you turn into a depression, there is a clear stream flowing down.
This ancient glacier is shrinking every year. It's one of only two remaining glaciers in the world! If you don't see it now, you'll never see it again. When you get to Hailuogou, you absolutely must take the cable car up there, or you'll regret it for the rest of your life. A round-trip cable car ticket is only 140 yuan, a great deal.
The scenery that greeted my eyes was truly beyond words: blue sky, white clouds, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and beyond that, not only the grandeur of the mountains, but also the gentle, delicate sound of a gurgling stream. At this moment, words were truly insufficient. I couldn't stop snapping, snapping, snapping, using my phone and camera, trying to capture every bit of the scenery before me, but it was nowhere near even one-tenth of the reality.
The first time I saw the glacier thousands of years ago, I felt so small and ignorant in front of it. It is indeed majestic, tall, and charming.
There are 76 glaciers here, and the largest one we saw at Camp 4 is the largest. The glaciers here move and melt rapidly, so we witnessed glacial meltwater at Camp 4 and heard the rumble of avalanches in the distance. When we reached the summit, the sun was just beginning to peek through the clouds, but soon the entire mountain was shrouded in mist, and in an instant, nothing could be seen. Camp 4 also has a memorial plaque commemorating the climbers who scaled Mount Gongga.
You can circle around Camp 4 and there is a glacier viewing platform. If you are lucky, you can see the snow-capped mountains and hear the rumbling sound of avalanches in the snow-capped mountains. There are also attractions such as the Golden Buddha, the White Pagoda, and the Red Stone Beach. However, the Red Stone Beach is not large and there are not many red stones now, which is a bit disappointing.
On clear days, Camp 4 in the scenic area offers a view of Mount Gongga's main peak. The cable car, which seats four people per cabin, takes about 18 minutes one way. Those with a fear of heights should take a detour. The cable car only reaches Camp 4 at its furthest point, and the rest of the way is on foot.
There was heavy fog on the mountain that day and visibility was extremely low. I waited at Camp No. 4 for more than an hour and could barely see the main peak of Mount Gongga intermittently and vaguely, but it was fleeting (the camera could not capture it). I met a few tourists who had entered the scenic area for the third consecutive day and planned to take pictures of Mount Gongga. They complained helplessly about the ruthless weather in the past few days.
From Camp 4, we could see the main peak of Gongga and the large icefall, which was quite spectacular. Because the main peak is quite far away and the angle is wrong, it doesn't appear particularly high. However, it is actually over 7,000 meters above sea level, while the surrounding peaks are only 5,000-6,000 meters above sea level.
The end point of the cable car is Camp 4. The scenery is very beautiful and you can get close to the snow-capped mountains.
Beauty, no more comments, but you need good luck to see its beauty
I went there in December and had a different kind of winter solstice there!
The weather was very good for the past few days, and the scenery along the way was worth it!
It is most beautiful in winter! The ultraviolet rays under the sun are very strong and it is quite warm.
Taking the cable car, we saw a large area of glaciers and snow-capped mountains, which was very spectacular. One hour was enough to visit Camp 4, and the scenery was unobstructed. The strong sunlight and white snow made me dizzy... I must wear sunscreen.
Leave enough time to take the cable car back to Base No. 3 and hike down the mountain. There are other attractions waiting for you to enjoy. It's easier to take the sightseeing bus for part of the way back down the mountain and walk for part of the way. The winding mountain road is at a high altitude, which can make it easier to get carsick. But in good weather, the beautiful scenery is right before your eyes!
Camp 4 is the best spot for viewing the glacier. This camp is primarily for viewing the Red Stone Beach and the glacier. If you're lucky, you might even see a colorful sundog, avalanches, and the main peak of Gongga. The sun is out on the summit, and it's quite warm. There's no significant altitude sickness, but the pressure at the top is quite high, so avoid bringing puffed food.
Camp 4 is the base from which you can get closest to the Gonggashan Glacier.
Camp 4 is the highest viewing platform in Hailuogou, where you can see several glaciers from different locations. Mount Gongga is a sacred mountain in the hearts of Tibetans, so Camp 4 also has a white pagoda and a golden Buddha statue.
We went at the end of January and were incredibly lucky! The weather was perfect! The 1,100-meter-high icefall and the 7,556-meter-high Gongga Peak behind it were breathtaking! Since it was still winter, the snow was even deeper than usual. No wonder winter is considered the best season for visiting Hailuogou. Firstly, the chances of sunny days are high, and secondly, the snow still hasn't melted. The snow-covered world of ice and snow creates a breathtaking spectacle!
Because the altitude is over 3,500 meters, there is a chance of altitude sickness. This time, perhaps because there are many places to visit in Camp IV, the two of them walked for more than an hour and both had headaches and shortness of breath to varying degrees, and had to sit down and rest.
For those who are climbing a mountain for the first time or have low lung capacity, it is recommended to soak Rhodiola rosea water half an hour beforehand, or buy a small bottle of oxygen to bring with you, just in case. If you are not prepared, it is not a big deal to stop and rest after walking a few steps, after all, the altitude is not very high.
Camp 4 boasts several glacier viewing platforms and a wooden walkway leading down to the valley floor. We followed the zigzag path to the valley floor, experiencing up close the remains of the Ice Age. Unmelted ice debris littered the path, a stark reminder that this was the glacier. The walkway then disappeared, leaving us with only the rocks to descend. The ice at the valley floor, formed over millions of years by the Earth's crustal movement through melting, freezing, compression, and flow, is a grayish-black color. There are numerous cracks between the ice sheets, so be careful where you step. If you fall into a large crevice, your well-preserved remains could be found decades or even centuries later on the lower reaches of the glacier tongue. On the way back, I made a mistake. In an attempt to take a shortcut, I forgot we were on the plateau. Climbing straight up the mountain wall with my children, I reached the beginning of the zigzag walkway and was already experiencing altitude sickness. Headaches, tinnitus, shortness of breath...
Camp 4 Camp 4 Camp 4 Camp 4 Camp 4
You can see Mount Gongga, the Great Icefall, and the Red Stone Beach. You can't see the Red Stone Beach this season. It seems that Camp 4 is sunny most of the time, so there should be few clouds blocking the view of Mount Gongga! It is said that the end of the glacier trail is even more spectacular than Camp 4. It is worth going there again next time.
The scenery from the cable car was amazing. We went to worship the Four-Faced Buddha. Hailuogou is very close to the sacred place. The locals are very welcoming. After leaving the cable car, I recommend trying the Black Pine Glacier Trail. The view below the cable car is magnificent, and you can see the legendary ice cave. In the sun, it is blue-green.
Everyone knows that the weather on the mountain can be cloudy and sunny. We arrived around noon. There were snacks available on the mountain, and there were also some convenience stores selling instant food and milk tea along the way. You could buy some, but the path was icy, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. The scenery was beautiful, though not noticeable during the thick fog. But once it cleared, it felt like a Buddha's light.
1. We were very lucky to see a rare blue sky, and we could vaguely see the Gongga Snow Mountain; 2. The scenery in the gorge is very similar to that in Yosemite National Park in the United States; 3. The glaciers are very similar. The Hailuogou Glacier is a bit like the Columbia Glacier in Canada. The places without snow are all barren gravel. The formation of glaciers is all avalanches and mudslides. You don’t need to go to the United States or Canada to see them when you go to western Sichuan; 4. The Gongga Shentang Hot Spring Hotel is great, with more than a dozen hot spring pools of different sizes, which are within walking distance from the room. I recommend it.
You won't believe how lucky we were! The morning sun shining on the Golden Mountain, the true appearance of Gongga after reaching the summit, the huge ice waterfall, and the snow forest are so touching that you can cry!
Camp No. 4, at an altitude of 3,600 meters, is the epitome of Hailuogou Scenic Area. From Camp No. 3, a cable car ride begins, and the glacier expanse begins. Glaciers No. 2 and No. 3 approach, and then the most beautiful Glacier No. 1 slowly emerges from behind a mountain. From the observation deck at Camp No. 4, you can see a panoramic view of Glacier No. 1's massive icefall, a whopping 1,100 meters in height. You can also gaze out over the main peak of Gongga, over 7,000 meters above sea level, and experience a close encounter with the glacier.
You can go down to the glacier to play, the most spectacular is the big ice waterfall.
I thought I'd see tons of ice and even stand on it. But I overthink things. 😖 I took the cable car up there. All I saw were snow-capped mountains in the distance. So disappointing. The view of the mountains was beautiful, though. There's also a memorial for the victims. I think they're amazing! 😊
The main scenic spot and the highlight of Hailuogou is Camp No. 4, where there is the famous Iceberg Waterfall. It was foggy when we went there and we didn’t see its true appearance, but fortunately we took a photo of it accidentally. We didn’t know it was it at the time. You must take the cable car, the scenery you see is different, super spectacular!
It was very shocking. The big ice waterfall is really beautiful when there is sunshine, but it was not there when we went there.
The platform at Camp 4 faces the icefall, offering stunning views. The icefall is spectacular, but weather conditions are quite demanding. We went up around 9:30 in the morning. It seemed to have snowed overnight, and there was snow on the campsite. The weather was fine when we went up, with the sun out and good visibility. However, starting around 11 a.m., the icefall was obscured by clouds, so it's best to go up early if you want to see it.
Every time I see the glaciers built up over billions of years here, they are holy and mysterious. Everything is infinitely beautiful because of you.
It is worth coming to Hailuogou. It is so beautiful in winter that it cannot be expressed in words.
You have to take the cable car to get to Camp 4. The student ticket is 140 yuan, and the adult ticket is 150 yuan. But it's worth it. The mountain is shrouded in mist and is breathtakingly beautiful. We were lucky enough to get up there when the sun came out. After the mist cleared, the scenery was so breathtaking that you couldn't take your eyes off it. I was also happy to get some melted snow on the mountain. I filled a bottle of glacier water. It was cool and tasteless, but it really was water from nature. The snow was so white. Be sure to wear enough socks when going up the mountain. You can choose to rent a pair of shoes or buy spikes. Non-slip shoes are very important. Both are 30 yuan...
With its lush vegetation, pristine forests, fresh air, and spectacular glaciers, it's a truly worthwhile place to visit.
The scenery was absolutely stunning. Because the cable car was under maintenance when we visited, we had to walk up from Camp 3. While we missed the breathtaking aerial views of the glacier, the hike offered a wealth of unexpected beauty. Surrounded by a world of crystal-clear snow, the view was breathtaking. On our way to Camp 4, there was a small shop where we could get hot drinks and meals. A serving of tangyuan (sweet dumplings) was 10 yuan, which honestly wasn't expensive in that area. Overall, it was a perfect experience!
Camp No. 4 is the highest point accessible to tourists in the Hailuogou Scenic Area. Accessible by cable car, it features a glacier viewing platform. The Hailuogou Icefall, at 1,080 meters high and 1,100 meters wide at its widest point, is the tallest icefall discovered in China to date, ten times larger than the Huangguoshu Waterfall. Behind it rises the 7,556-meter peak of Mount Gongga, the king of the Shu Mountains. This is the best place to admire the Hailuogou Icefall. If you arrive early and enjoy good weather, you can see the peak and admire other wonders, such as the sunrise over the Golden Mountain. However, the weather in the mountains is unpredictable, and fog is common. If you encounter fog, don't rush down the mountain; it might clear in two hours. There's a canteen at the campsite, but the food is quite expensive: a cup of Xiangpiaopiao costs 10 yuan, and a bucket of instant noodles costs 10 yuan. Restrooms are free on the way from the cable car to the viewing platform. We visited in winter, and it was freezing cold, so winter travelers are advised to dress warmly and be well-ventilated.
The mysterious Gongga Mountain, with its thousand-year-old glaciers. My friend and I climbed to about 4,000 meters, but the road became difficult to walk on, so we came down.
It's still beautiful! It's just that the sun is too strong! I feel dizzy! Otherwise, I would be happier!!!
From Camp 3, we arrived at Camp 4, which reaches an altitude of 3,600 meters. This is the highest point in Hailuogou for viewing the glaciers and the best place to see the glaciers and admire the snow-capped scenery of Mount Gongga. You can wander around the mountain or descend to the bottom of Hailuogou for an up-close encounter with the glaciers. There are Tibetan elements like prayer flags on the mountain, as well as a monument to those who sacrificed their lives climbing Mount Gongga. After walking around the mountain, I felt dizzy, perhaps due to altitude sickness! There are song and dance performances twice a day, morning and afternoon. A beautiful Yi girl who boarded the same bus with me Photoshopped a photo for me, even though the performances were long over!
The weather was great, the scenery was beautiful, and the staff were very nice.
Camp 4 offers views of the glacier, and if you're lucky, you can even see Mount Gongga. However, this requires good weather. The fog wasn't there when I visited, so I couldn't even see the glacier. I could only take photos of the rocky gully and visit the red stone beach. However, I'm sure the scenery at this scenic spot would be stunning on a clear day. The view from the cable car, gazing at the glacial monuments, is truly majestic. For those who haven't experienced this kind of scenery, I highly recommend it.
If the weather is clear, you can take the cable car to see the Wannian Glacier and see the sacred mountain, Gongga.
I joined a tour group but didn't have the chance to have an in-depth experience, which was a pity.
At 11:50 am on September 23, 2015, Camp 4 was filled with jubilation. The rare "Ghost of Gongga" was revealed before everyone! The summit of Gongga was covered in snow, a breathtaking beauty.
If the weather is good, you have to go to Camp No. 4. The scenery when taking the cable car is of course more beautiful than hiking. Looking at the snow scene, the camera is not enough to record this shocking beauty. I can't help but think of the snow scene in Game of Thrones. It is really beautiful.
The scenery of Hailuogou is very nice, but it is a bit difficult to reach the glacier.
The Hailuogou Glacier is located in the center of the Hailuogou Scenic Area. The cable car passes over the glacier, directly passing Glacier No. 1 and reaching Glaciers No. 2 and 3. However, because some parts of Glacier No. 1 in Hailuogou were covered by mudslides, it is not visible from the cable car.
We hiked to Glacier No. 1. We were exhausted on the way up, but not on the way down. Once we reached the glacier, we were greeted by a vast expanse of gray rocks. We were puzzled. Why was the glacier gray? It turned out to be covered by a debris flow!
The sacred mountain in my heart, the place I long for. It’s a pity that I didn’t see the real appearance of the sacred mountain, but I will go there again.
Camp No. 4 in Hailuogou, at an altitude of 2,850 meters, offers the best vantage point for panoramic views of the glacier. Access is by a dedicated scenic bus. The bus stops once for a short walk through the vast primeval forests of Hailuogou Scenic Area, creating a breathtaking natural oxygen bar. Continue on by bus and transfer to a cable car to Camp No. 4. Mount Gongga's main peak is over 6,000 meters above sea level, and the majestic descent of Glacier No. 1 is a breathtaking spectacle. A descent to the valley floor is possible, but the path is narrow and unfenced. Glacier No. 2 is further to the left of Glacier No. 1 and remains undeveloped.
I went there during the National Day holiday, but unfortunately the weather wasn't good, and I couldn't see the main peak of Gongga Mountain from Camp 4. The tour guide said some people had come five or six times and still had no luck.
It was a really great trip. It was snowing when we set out, but luckily the sun came out when we got to the mountain, so we were able to see such beautiful scenery.
This is the best observation point to view the snow-capped mountains!!!
I have seen Mount Gongga, Mount Everest, and the Great Icefall!
It is worth mentioning that if you want to go up to Camp No. 4, you must take its most distinctive alpine cableway, from which you can see the panoramic view of the large icefall, the icefall with a drop of up to 1,100 meters, the main peak of Gongga at an altitude of more than 7,000 meters, and have an intimate contact with the glacier.
Before you is an endless world of ice and snow, beneath which lies a glacier frozen for millennia – a truly breathtaking experience. Camp 4, currently without accommodation, is the terminus of the newly built Hailuogou Glacier Cableway.
At Camp 4, you can choose to hike to the glacier or take the cable car. I took the cable car. The cable car ticket costs 150 yuan, and you can see the snow-capped mountains and deep forests from a high altitude.
I went there quite a while ago. The snow on Hailuogou was actually quite dirty and black, but climbing the icebergs was quite challenging. I hired a local guide, and the snow and ice along the way were very slippery. The locals were familiar with the safe route, so it was quite fun. After climbing the snow mountain, I soaked in the hot springs, which was very refreshing.
The best viewing point in Hailuogou, where you can see the thousand-year-old glacier.
Finally arrived at Camp 4. The thousand-year-old glaciers and snow-capped mountains were right before our eyes.
Camp 4 is at an altitude of over 3,600 meters. I didn't experience any altitude sickness, but it was incredibly hot and the UV rays were so strong I even had to pull my shawl over my head. I'm not trying to be stylish. Remember to wear sunscreen. Also, the temperature is quite low up there, and I definitely caught a cold when I got back. I wore a jacket, a short-sleeved shirt, and a shawl. And that was on a sunny day.
Surrounded by the vast snow-capped mountains, you won't believe your eyes. They seem far away, yet they are right before your eyes. The blue sky and white clouds against the vast snow-capped mountains will make you sigh at the charm of nature and thank nature for its gifts.
The spectacular glacier stretches from the middle of Mount Gongga to the forest below. You can also go down to the glacier and have a close contact with this magical nature.
Camp 4 is 3,600 meters above sea level, and you can see the glacier tongue. The drop is 1,100 meters, and the height is 1,000 meters. I don’t think it’s that big.
If you like glaciers, you must go. There are not many places on earth where you can get close to glaciers.
Tremble, humans! There were so many people on the cable car. It took two hours to shoot to get up, and another two hours to queue to get down~~
After taking the cable car to Camp 4, we saw that hot pot was prepared for us, O(∩_∩)O hahaha~
At night, we sleep on a large bunk bed.
The place where I slept on the floor last night has been transformed back into a lounge this morning. If there were stars at night, it would be wonderful to fall asleep here looking at the starry sky.
A simple kitchen is used to prepare a hearty breakfast.
It’s a really beautiful place, better than Mount Emei because there’s no garbage there!!
It was foggy when I went there and I felt like I was going to die. It cleared up on the day I left. I was so sad.
The weather was very good on the day we went there. The sky was blue, the sun was bright, and it was sacred and peaceful. The long journey was worth it.
Our goal was Camp 4. We bought a cable car ticket and rode it all the way up, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding scenery. Ascending to a higher elevation, we had a spectacular panoramic view of the Hailuogou Glacier. During my visit in 2011, I didn't reach Camp 4 due to heavy fog, but the scenery was still different. First-time visitors to Hailuogou should definitely visit Camp 4 for a more comprehensive view.
The cable car terminus is Camp 4, over 3,000 meters above sea level, so altitude sickness is a thing of the past. Camp 4 boasts a Four-Faced Buddha statue, reportedly funded by a Thai princess. There's also a Four-Faced Guanyin statue... which I find rather meaningless. There's also a Tibetan Buddhist White Pagoda and a modest red rock beach. At the cable car exit, there are barley cakes. My first bite was unpalatable, but the second was quite good, and then the third and fourth, and then I couldn't stop.
Camp 4 is a recently constructed viewing platform at the scenic area. It's said to offer a closer view of Mount Gongga and the Great Icefall than from the Black Pine Forest. Because it's located on the summit, there's no access to the road, so you have to take the cable car, which is quite expensive at 150 yuan round trip. Be sure to check the weather before going up; if it's bad, don't go up, as it'll be foggy and you won't be able to see anything.
