Lu Xun Memorial Hall

鲁迅纪念馆

Construction of the Luxun Memorial Hall in Shaoxing began in 1973. In early 2003, to restore the traditional character of Luxun's hometown, the exhibition hall, which was out of scale with the surroundings, was demolished and restored as the Zhoujiaxintaimen. The newly constructed memorial hall is located on the east side of Luxun's hometown, adjacent to Luxun's ancestral home to the east, Zhoujiaxintaimen to the west, Zhujiataimen to the north, Dongchangfangkou to the south, and across the river from Shoujiataimen. The Luxun Memorial Hall covers a total area of 6,000 square meters, with a total construction area of approximately 5,000 square meters. Adhering to the design concept of "old house, new space," the hall blends seamlessly into the traditional streetscape of the area. The exterior of the memorial hall follows the Shaoxing Taimen architectural style, with the main entrance featuring a traditional Shaoxing bamboo Taimen. The memorial hall offers an elegant environment, with the plaza and various entrances and exits paved with traditional Shaoxing bluestone slabs. The green alley connecting the exhibition hall and Lu Xun's ancestral home, planted with bamboo and stacked stones, and lush flowers and trees, is a typical example of a traditional courtyard garden in Shaoxing. It is also equipped with unique Shaoxing architectural elements such as covered bridges and black-sailed boats, creating a Jiangnan water village atmosphere. The exhibition hall garden features culturally significant camphor, pine, orchid, and plum trees. Furthermore, jujube, honey locust, mulberry, magnolia vine, and raspberry trees, inspired by Lu Xun's poem "Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk," are also planted to recreate the ambiance of Lu Xun's time.

Diagonally across from Sanwei Bookstore is the Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall. The exterior of the memorial hall features a Shaoxing Taimen architectural style, with the main entrance featuring a traditional Shaoxing bamboo Taimen. Inside, sculptures and stainless steel walls enhance the memorial's cultural connotations and artistic appeal through modern display techniques. The interweaving of architecture and water features, with the interior and exterior spaces flowing seamlessly into one another, creates a vibrant and modern exhibition hall embodying Shaoxing's unique character. The seven large characters "Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall" emblazoned on the front wall of the exhibition hall were inscribed by Guo Moruo.

Walking down the street, we arrived at the Lu Xun Memorial Hall. A bronze statue of Lu Xun stands at the entrance, and two lines of golden characters on the screen wall read: "With a cold brow, I face the criticism of thousands, and with my head bowed, I am willing to serve as an ox for children." This perfectly captures Lu Xun's life. The memorial hall tells the story of Lu Xun's family background and his subsequent abandonment of medicine for literature, using his pen as a weapon. It is filled with precious images, historical materials, and real objects.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shaoxing is located to the east of Lu Xun's hometown, between Lu Xun's ancestral home and Zhoujia Xintaimen.

The memorial hall has a long history. The old hall was built in 1953 and was later demolished to restore the traditional style of Lu Xun's hometown. The current one is the new hall.

After entering, there is a courtyard and a staircase leading to the exhibition hall. In the hall is a bronze statue of Lu Xun and the words "I face the criticism of thousands of people with a cold brow, and I bow my head and am willing to be a cow for children."

The exhibition hall introduces Mr. Lu Xun's life in detail, including his thoughts, works, deeds, etc. His autobiography is printed on one wall, and there are also many comments and praises of him by great people.

If you have time, you should really take the time to visit it.

Free admission.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shaoxing is a three-dimensional map of Lu Xun's literature. Crossing the stone wall engraved with "Backbone of the Nation", the bluestone road leads you into the folds of time and space of Zhoujiataimen.

In a late Qing Dynasty courtyard with gray tiles and white walls, Xun Ge'er's red-painted brush rests on a window-side table, as if the owner has just left to feed the goldfish in the backyard. Polygonum multiflorum vines still cling to the base of the mud walls of Baicao Garden, and the light and shadow cast by the honey locust tree overlap with the text of "Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk." Thirty-seven bronze reliefs in the exhibition hall transform "The Scream" and "Wandering" into tangible textures. Trace revisions on a yellowed manuscript hold the secrets of "The True Story of Ah Q." A rubbing of the Chinese character "早" (early morning) rests quietly beside his dissection notes from his time studying in Japan.

The Japanese cherry blossoms in the backyard were donated by Mr. Fujino's descendants. In front of the sika deer painting at the original site of Sanwei Bookstore, you can smell the scent of ink from the Guangxu period floating between the wooden lattices.

Lu Xun's mother, Lu Rui, smoked a hookah, and the sweater worn by Hai Ying in the display case still retains the warmth of his father's body. Most touchingly, the memorial deliberately left two "blanks"—a glass case with no exhibits labeled with the damaged butterfly kite from "The Kite" and a wall with no text projected with lines from "Wild Grass," allowing each visitor to fill these blanks with their own memories.

Visit the Lu Xun Memorial Hall and carefully savor every detail of Mr. Lu Xun's life. The exhibitions here are incredibly detailed, so you won't regret reading them. Here are a few photos of the most memorable exhibits. A key reason for Mr. Lu Xun's greatness lies in his profound understanding of human nature. As I grow older, I deeply understand the feelings Mr. Lu Xun felt when he saw Runtu. When I go home for the Lunar New Year and see my childhood playmates, I can relate. We were emotionally close, yet unable to express ourselves, as if separated by an invisible barrier.

The Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall is located to the east of Lu Xun's former residence, across the river from the Sanwei Book House in Shoujiataimen. The inscription was written by Guo Moruo.

Completed in 2004, this modern exhibition hall, imbued with Shaoxing characteristics and contemporary spirit, boasts a simple and understated design. The Lu Xun Life and Deeds Exhibition Hall comprises a prologue hall, north and south main exhibition halls, auxiliary exhibition halls, a celebrity collection, and a leisure area. Through a wealth of exhibits, including physical objects, manuscripts, photographs, letters, charts, and models, and utilizing modern display methods such as multimedia touch screens, 3D imaging, and lifelike wax figures of characters like Lu Xun and Runtu, and Lu Xun and Fujino, the exhibition vividly recreates Lu Xun's glorious life and achievements.

Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shaoxing. I just visited the Lu Xun Museum in Beijing last month, where I once again relived the legendary and extraordinary life of Mr. Lu Xun.

Mr. Lu Xun first received his education at the Sanwei Book House private school, then went to the Naval School to study mining, and later traveled across the ocean to Japan to study medicine. He found that studying medicine could only cure diseases but not govern the country, so he returned to China, gave up medicine and turned to literature.

Throughout his life, Mr. Lu Xun made significant contributions in many fields including literary creation, literary criticism, ideological research, literary history research, translation, introduction of art theory, introduction of basic science, and collation and research of ancient books.

Compared to the surrounding former residences, the Lu Xun Memorial Hall boasts a more modern design. Spread across two floors, the museum documents Lu Xun's life and deeds in graphic form. I quickly took a look around, but it was a nice place to rest after a long stroll. There's an Ah Q statue at the first-floor stairwell, though a few stools are missing. The exits are all filled with souvenirs.

This is more interesting, as it records the major events in Lu Xun's life.

Lu Xun used many pen names throughout his life, but why is "Lu Xun" the most famous? Was it his favorite pen name? "Lu" seems to come from his mother's surname, Lu Rui, and Lu Xun looks like her. Also, Lu Xun's handwriting is beautiful, both in Chinese and English!

If you want to learn more about the life and deeds of Mr. Lu Xun, then this is the right place to come. The museum adopts a chronological format to show the social environment of Shaoxing when Lu Xun was born. It highlights why Lu Xun, who was also a young and frivolous child, was so outstanding. It uses various real stories to tell you why Lu Xun made you recite the entire text.

There is a half-length bronze statue in the front yard of the memorial hall. At first glance, it looks a bit like a Mr. Betty wearing glasses. He is the protagonist of another famous text by Lu Xun, "Mr. Fujino" - Fujino Yanjiurong.

Walking into the lobby of the memorial hall, there stands a seated statue of Lu Xun. On the wall behind him is written his well-known motto: "I face the criticism of thousands of people with a cold brow and I am willing to be a cow for the children."

As you tour the hall from the prologue to the back, with time and place as clues, Mr. Lu Xun's academic life unfolds before your eyes.

After viewing all the exhibitions, a more multifaceted and vivid image of Lu Xun will emerge. You will feel that Lu Xun is not just the "military culprit" who kidnapped our youth in textbooks, but also a remarkable man who shuttled through the light and shadow of the Republic of China like the wind.

His classic lines, such as "There are no roads in the world," "A true warrior," and "One is a jujube tree, the other is also a jujube tree," are still popular online. Regardless, I'm definitely memorizing Mr. Lu Xun's texts.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall is incredibly rich (not including the underground, wholesale-market-like souvenir area). The saying "a man of learning brings out his elegance" is truly true. Looking through photos of Lu Xun from his youth, it's clear he only began to develop a handsome demeanor around 1925, a handsomeness imbued with a profound aura. The two photos from 1936 that left the deepest impression on me are the ones he took: one showing him recovering from a serious illness, the other after his death. His cheeks are deeply sunken, a stark contrast to the Lu Xun we know. Everyone knows he was in poor health, yet despite his immense literary fame, how many people could truly understand him?

Next to Lu Xun's former residence is the Lu Xun Memorial Hall. The seven large characters "Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall" adorning the front wall of the exhibition hall were inscribed by Guo Moruo. The hall offers a detailed account of Lu Xun's life and the development of his thought. I deeply admire Lu Xun. He was a truly proud intellectual and a fighter, unafraid of power, daring to expose the dark side of society and speaking out to awaken the apathetic souls of the people. This is precisely why Lu Xun abandoned medicine to pursue literature. I suddenly remembered the time after the Wenchuan earthquake, when a poet from the Federation of Literary and Art Circles expressed gratitude to the government on behalf of the victims, writing the timeless and infamous poem, "Even as a ghost, I would be happy." He was like a broken-backed dog, one that even a mangy dog would be ashamed to associate with.

Look at the backbone of our nation - Lu Xun said in "Random Thoughts from the Qiejieting: Have the Chinese Lost Their Self-Confidence": Since ancient times, we have had people who work hard, people who work hard, people who plead for the people, people who sacrifice their lives for the law... Although the so-called "official history" is equivalent to writing a genealogy for emperors and generals, it often cannot cover up their glory. This is the backbone of China.

There is no entrance fee to the Lu Xun Memorial Hall, which is right next to Lu Xun's hometown and opens at around 8:00 in the morning. "With a cold brow, he faced the criticism of thousands of people, and he was willing to be a cow for children" has always been the best portrayal of Mr. Lu Xun's life. He used his pen as a weapon, wrote furiously, and fought all his life. He was hailed as the "soul of the nation." The national heroes of that era were always linked to politics, because politics needed to be constantly exaggerated and beautified. As Zhou Haiying commented: Perhaps due to political needs, for a long time, Lu Xun's image was portrayed as "cold-browed", as if he was not the real Lu Xun or the Lu Xun needed by society if he was not cold-browed. Indeed, Lu Xun had a clear distinction between love and hate, but that does not mean that Lu Xun had no emotions, and did not have his gentle and loving side.

Lu Xun's former residence is located directly opposite the Zhou family's Xintaimen in Duchangfangkou. Xintaimen was the Zhou family's home for many years. The entire residence, a sprawling compound typical of Jiangnan, was built during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1796-1820). The Zhou family declined in the late Qing Dynasty, and the entire residence changed hands in 1918. While much of the original house was demolished and rebuilt, the main portion of Lu Xun's residence was fortunately preserved. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was renovated several times to its original state, and much of the original furniture was recovered and is now displayed in its original state. Entering the Shikumen-style house, along the long corridor bordering the well, you'll find the former residence of Lu Xun's family. Lu Xun was born downstairs in the west side room of this entrance.

, which contains photos and introductions of Lu Xun from different periods. However, what impressed me the most was the Sword of King Yue. I didn’t expect that there was a story behind this sword.

It’s great to take a look at Lu Xun’s life and learn about his story!

After leaving the school, there is a memorial hall diagonally opposite, which contains manuscripts, deeds, and the historical background of Shaoxing at that time.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall, a modern building, occupies a vast expanse. The exhibition halls, divided into two floors, chronicle Lu Xun's brief yet brilliant 56-year life, following his footsteps: Shaoxing, Nanjing, Japan, Beijing, Xiamen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Upon entering, the seated statue of Lu Xun and the powerful inscription beside it, "I face the criticism of thousands with a cold brow, and bow my head to serve as a willing ox for the children," are deeply memorable. The second-floor exhibition hall showcases Lu Xun's literary works, a breathtaking display of admiration for this literary giant. As for the descriptions of him as "the backbone of the nation" and "the soul of the nation," I'm sure everyone understands.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall, reportedly costing nearly 400 million yuan, has become a Shaoxing treasure. It's absolutely worth a visit to receive a masterful education that will benefit you for a lifetime. A cursory half-day tour inevitably leaves you with a fleeting glimpse of the past and missing out on much. I suggest that future visits to Shaoxing be a good start by reviewing Lu Xun's works or middle school textbooks to fully appreciate the experience.

I visited the Lu Xun Memorial Hall once in 2007. I remember it being relatively new. I'm not sure when it opened.

It's divided into the first and second floors. The second floor tells the life story of Mr. Lu Xun in great detail, and also features sculptures and wax figures. Personally, I think the second floor is much more beautiful than the first. I recommend going up to the second floor because it's crowded and you'll learn a lot.

This is a very normal museum. If you want to learn more about Lu Xun, you can spend some time there. Personally, I feel that it is not much different from the Lu Xun Memorial Halls in various parts of China.

The description in the article is in stark contrast to reality. As the saying goes, "seeing the scenery is not as good as hearing about it." Who can explain the merits and demerits of history clearly?

The memorial hall of Lu Xun, a great writer of his generation, gives a detailed introduction to Lu Xun's life. You can take your time to stroll around and have a look.

If you don't like it, it's a waste of time!

The "Lu Xun Life and Deeds Exhibition Hall" of the Lu Xun Memorial Hall itself is a modern exhibition hall with Shaoxing characteristics and contemporary features. Its simple and peaceful shape fully reflects the humanistic connotation of Lu Xun's spirit.

It introduces Lu Xun in great detail, but is not limited to Mr. Lu Xun alone. The overall feeling is very grand, and has the feeling of a Mr. Lu Xun!

This is hard to understand. Friends who know history can go in and take a look. . . . . . . .
