Purple Bamboo Forest Scenic Area

紫竹林景区

The Purple Bamboo Forest is located at the foot of Meitan Ridge in the southeastern part of Putuo Mountain in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. The rocks in the mountain are purple-red, and upon cross-section, patterns resembling cypress and bamboo leaves can be seen, earning them the name Purple Bamboo Stone. Later generations also planted purple bamboo here. In the second year of the Zhenming reign of the Later Liang Dynasty (1644-1144), the Japanese monk Huie, who had obtained a Guanyin statue from Mount Wutai, encountered a storm on his way back home and built the "Bukenqu Guanyin Temple" within the Purple Bamboo Forest. In front of the Guanyin Temple lies the Chaoyin Cave. Beside the Purple Bamboo Forest lies Guangming Pond, with Guanyin Pavilion to the south and Luojiashan Island visible across the shore.

Nestled at the southeastern foot of the Buddhist land of Putuo, the Putuo Purple Bamboo Forest Scenic Area, nestled against the backdrop of mountains and facing the sea, embodies a profound and tranquil Zen atmosphere. The scenic area centers on the purple bamboo forest temple, with its green tiles and yellow walls, said to be the place where Guanyin Bodhisattva practiced her meditation. The sound of the ancient temple bells blends with the roar of the waves in Chaoyin Cave, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Millennium-old camphor trees complement the purple bamboo corridor, while a majestic bronze statue of Guanyin of the South China Sea stands majestically amidst the lush bamboo. The temple's legendary charm is further enhanced by the Tang Dynasty-style architecture, which complements the reef and seascape. It's recommended to visit early in the morning to experience the morning bells and Buddhist chants shrouded in mist, and be mindful of slippery stone steps when walking. This tranquil retreat, blending Buddhist culture with the wonders of mountain and sea, offers a moment of refuge for the urban soul.

Located in the southeast corner of Putuo Mountain, the Zizhulin Scenic Area derives its name from the purple rocks and the purple bamboos planted there. The entire area comprises three sub-areas: the Zizhulin Zen Temple (including Chaoyin Cave and the Bukenqu Guanyin Temple), the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, and the Xifang Jingyuan (Guanyin Jump Site). It is a tourist destination that seamlessly blends cultural and natural attractions.

By China-TravelNote users |

The Buken Go Guanyin is a very Japanese-style building, with 33 Buddha statues and explanations enshrined in Japanese gardens. It is quite interesting to look at it carefully. Zizhulin and Nanhai Guanyin are not far apart. There is also Guanyin Jump, and the Huiyan Memorial Hall that I haven't found? I wanted to read about Huiyan's life, but unfortunately I couldn't find it. The Nanhai Guanyin incense and flower voucher is 6 yuan. I have to add here that I didn't pay attention when I came here two years ago. This year, I found Nanhai Guanyin because there were many incense burning tour guides. I had only found them in Puji Temple before. Incense burning tour guides are not expensive, but the problem is that they don't just tell you how to worship Buddha. I accidentally heard several tour guides say that they were basically selling expensive lotus lanterns and other incense. I urge everyone to consume rationally here. I won't say more here for fear of getting beaten.

The Purple Bamboo Forest Scenic Area is the essence of Putuo Mountain, including the Purple Bamboo Forest Zen Temple, the Unwilling to Go Guanyin Temple, the Nanhai Guanyin Standing Buddha, and other attractions. However, it is said that visiting the Guanyin statue before noon is the most effective, so it will be crowded in the morning.

By Helan Jumeng |

Don't miss Guanyin Jump and the "Bu Ken Qu Guanyin Temple." After exiting Nanhai Guanyin, you'll find Guanyin Jump on the right, a large rock beneath the cliffs of Xifang Jingyuan. For the "Bu Ken Qu Guanyin Temple" (near the sea), there's a sign on the right side of the road leading to the parking lot.

Putuo Mountain is the dojo of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, so as the name suggests, Zizhulin is the residence of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.

By c |

When arriving at Zizhulin, first visit the Nanhai Guanyin Temple (6 yuan for an incense and flower ticket). Enter the main hall through the right-hand door. A portrait of the Goddess of Childbirth hangs on the wall to the left of this door. While you're in Zizhulin (5 yuan for an incense and flower ticket), don't miss the Guanyin Dance and the Unwilling to Go Guanyin Temple.

At the southern end of Putuo Mountain, on the way to Nanhai Guanyin, you can see it. It is also a well-known Zen temple, which contains the Bukenqu Guanyin Temple and Chaoyin Cave.

By Lemoon |

The main attractions of Zizhulin Scenic Area are Chaoyin Cave and Bukenqu Guanyin Temple. In fact, Guanyin can be seen in various open places on the mountain, including on the cruise ship. At the Nanhai Guanyin, you need to light 9 incense sticks. If you want to take the remaining incense home, you need to turn the incense on the incense burner three times, which means returning the fragrance.

By MLWG |

What if I go there once and don’t find any purple bamboo? Does it still count as a trip?

By Phineas |

The Zizhulin Scenic Area is located in the southeast of Putuo Mountain and south of Baibusha. It consists of attractions such as the Bukenqu Guanyin Temple, Chaoyin Cave, Zizhulin, Guanyin Jump, the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, and Xifang Temple. In front of the Zizhulin Temple is a vast cape bay where the sea and sky are one color, which is well worth a visit.

By Travel to the edge of the universe |

It's quite boring. It's just a big Bodhisattva. You have to walk a long way to see it. It will be even worse if it rains.

By Xia Xia Yang Yang |

The name of the Guanyin Temple is really interesting. When I first heard it, my first reaction was "There must be a story behind it!"

The following introduction comes from Baidu Encyclopedia:

According to legend, in 916 AD, a Japanese monk named Hui'e brought a statue of Guanyin from Mount Wutai back to Japan. While passing through the Lotus Sea in Putuo, he suddenly discovered that it was covered in iron lotus flowers, making it impossible for his boat to pass. Hui'e, believing that Guanyin refused to cross to Japan, enshrined the statue in the home of a local named Zhang. From then on, Putuo Mountain gradually developed into a monastery dedicated to the worship of Guanyin, and Hui'e became known as its founding master.

If you don't want to go to Guanyin Temple, Zizhulin and Nanhai Guanyin are very close to each other and can be reached on foot.

On October 16, 2016, the Zizhulin area of Putuoshan Scenic Area includes the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, the Buken Guanyin Temple, the Zizhulin Zen Temple, the Chaoyin Cave, the Guangming Pool, the Guanyin Jump, and the Luojiashan Island can be seen opposite.

There are bamboos planted on both sides of the road from the Nanhai Guanyin statue to the Buken Guanyin Temple. They look much thinner than ordinary bamboos, and the bamboo poles are black and purple. I heard that they are difficult to grow.

On the way, we met many tour groups coming here, and the incense was very popular.

The fully reconstructed scenic area has a ticket price of 5 yuan and offers a view of Luojia Mountain from a distance.

By Yang Dazhuang |

Next to Guanyin Temple, there's a nunnery called Purple Bamboo Forest. I've always thought of Purple Bamboo Forest as a bamboo forest. While there are indeed purple bamboos on Putuo Mountain, they're sparse and thin, hardly a forest. Legend has it that Guanyin Bodhisattva once battled a snake king here, pointed at a stone, and purple bamboo immediately appeared. Later, the stones on the mountain were taken back home by devout believers as souvenirs.

A Buddhist holy land, temples of all sizes dedicate themselves to the Bodhisattva Guanyin. It can be said to be the "Hometown of Guanyin." The mountain is bustling with people, and the temples are filled with curling incense, creating a scene of a Buddhist kingdom across the sea and sky.

I initially thought the Purple Bamboo Forest would be a lush, verdant bamboo forest, with the sound of Buddhist chanting echoing through the Zen temple, and a gentle breeze casting a purple hue. However, it's actually just a small, unnoticeable bamboo forest beside the road. I crossed the small path and arrived at the Purple Bamboo Forest Zen Temple. I walked inside, took a few turns, and then left because it was too crowded. After the Purple Bamboo Forest, I decided to visit Guanyin Temple and Chaoyin Cave, which are worth visiting along the way.

I think the most beautiful view of Zizhulin is the sea around it. The vast sea and sky, the waves crashing against the shore, suddenly reminded me of Cao Mengde, who was full of heroic spirit and looked out at the vast ocean from Jieshi in the east.
