The hometown of the calligrapher Shaoxing lies hidden within the old waterside town. Winding bluestone streets and crammed with old houses, moss gleams green at the corners, and the creaking of wooden doors evokes the passage of time. Wang Xizhi's former residence has long since vanished, but the legendary ink pond can still be seen against the yellow walls of Jiezhu Lecture Hall. The water is pitch black, and children love to squat to watch for brushes. At the entrance of the alley, the stinky tofu stall wafts the unchanging aroma of oil for twenty years. An old woman sits on a bamboo chair, fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan. In an old teahouse, enamel cups steep Mingqian Longjing tea, while braised duck and fermented vegetables dry under the eaves. A rubbing of the "Lanting Preface" unexpectedly appears amidst the whitewashed walls and black tiles. Stone bridge piers are inscribed with crooked brush calligraphy. Even the telephone poles are festooned with antique lanterns, swaying and reflecting the shadows of black-sailed boats on the river. This place doesn't look like a scenic spot but more like a living museum. In the Taimen courtyard where flowery underpants are hung on clotheslines, there might be an old well hidden that Wang Xizhi used when practicing calligraphy.

The story of Wang Xizhi is one aspect

On the other hand, the old street here is quite nice

There are not many commercial things, they are all living in real life

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy brought back memories of my childhood. This is the authentic Jiangnan region, with its small bridges and flowing water. Unlike the vibrant and vibrant ancient towns, this place embodies a poetic quality of life. Quilts hang on terraces, dried goods dry, cleaning tools are placed by the doors, and you can hear the smoky aroma of cooking in the houses. You can see adults and children walking home from school, only to disappear into their own courtyards at the end of the alley. Yet, it's a well-functioning community, with a daycare center and a progressive neighborhood committee. Stories of outstanding individuals are engraved on the walls, promoting cultural heritage. Not far from the old train station, it's a great place to experience the authentic culture of a water town.

One of the old urban areas of Shaoxing, there are many legends about Wang Xizhi.

By Sheep (Chen Guoyang) |

Compared to the bustling Lu Xun's hometown, the Calligrapher's hometown is less touristy. It's a great choice for those seeking to experience Shaoxing's historic neighborhoods. While there are no B&Bs within the area, the old houses offer a perfect mix of handmade tin pot workshops, rice wine lounges, snack bars, and beverage shops, creating a harmonious coexistence of pristine nature and a fresh and simple atmosphere.

The alleys are paved with stone slabs, hollow red lanterns are hung under the eaves along the street, and the main halls are decorated in plain colors. If it is a lonely rainy day, you may meet a girl who is as sad as a lilac.

It would be great if you have drinking buddies with you. Sit down, order a plate of fennel beans, and a pound each of Yuanhong wine, Jiafan wine, Shanniang wine, and Xiangxue wine. You can chat about the five thousand years of Chinese history, and maybe you can even recite the core socialist values.

This place is really great, with rich historical and cultural heritage, and the atmosphere of Shaoxing life. It is very quiet and leisurely. I arrived after 5 o'clock and only walked around the streets. I felt a little disappointed that I couldn't see any of the attractions.

The old houses in the old street are well preserved! There are no tour groups, most of them are individual tourists! No tickets are required for Wang Xizhi's Former Residence, and the ticket price for Cai Yuanpei's Former Residence is 5 yuan for full-time and 2 yuan for half-time. Free admission for those over 70 years old with ID

In Shaoxing, any place called "hometown" is generally a systematic cluster of former residences of celebrities, so the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is no exception. In addition to the "Sage of Calligraphy" Wang Xizhi, the leader of Shaoxing's literary and art circles, there are also the great scholar Liu Zongzhou of the Ming Dynasty, the great thinker Huang Zongxi, and the "godfather" of the modern New Culture Movement Cai Yuanpei and other sages of past generations, all of whom have lived and studied in this neighborhood.

The layout of the scenic area is basically based on the style of a traditional water town, with a street in front and a river behind. The street is a path paved with bluestone slabs, lanterns with hollow patterns are hung under the eaves, and both sides of the river are lined with halls in plain colors, like an ink painting, very poetic.

The quiet bluestone path on a rainy day gives people the feeling of Dai Wangshu's "Rain Alley". In addition to the bungalows, there are also two-story buildings with courtyards in the ancient houses. It seems that they used to be wealthy families.

With the nationwide tourism boom in the arts and culture sector, the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is now increasingly embodying a cultural and creative spirit. Many workshops and old houses are now decorated in a rustic and fresh style, attracting passing tourists to browse and shop. It has also become a popular destination for young artists and rice wine enthusiasts. If you have enough time, you can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy.

This well-preserved Jiangnan cultural and historical district does not have the bustling crowds of Lu Xun's hometown, nor does it have the short visitor flow of Cangqiao. You can relax and stroll slowly along the ancient street by the river, take a picture of the old lady washing clothes by the riverbank, and play with the fat orange cat lying on the windowsill of the workshop.

Even on a wet and rainy day, seeing the lush and carefully cultivated flowers and plants displayed in front of every household will not make you feel bad. Instead, you will feel particularly nourished. You may even want to walk into a house, lean against the wooden window frame, and listen to the rain leisurely.

By Yidan_K |

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is really worth visiting over and over again. It is a very complete residential area in the Jiangnan water town, where a large number of residents still live. The bluestone roads, the staggered horse-head walls, the wooden windows, the double-layer wooden doors, and the lush flowers and plants carefully cultivated in front of every household are all very touching. When I went here to play in late spring and early summer, in the evening, there were light clouds in the sky and reflections in the water. There were women holding children out to play on the roadside, old people chatting in groups of three or two leaning against the doorframe, jumping children, and lazy little dogs. Standing on the bridge, there was water, houses, and towers in the distance. Time passed slowly. There is also an eight-character bridge on the water. The former residence of Cai Yuanpei and the ancestral home of Premier Zhou are also located in this area. It is a very good place to receive patriotic education.

Shaoxing, Zhejiang is the hometown of the calligrapher Wang Xizhi. Wang Xizhi's "Lanting Preface" is the essence of Chinese calligraphy. When you come to Shaoxing, you must visit the hometown of the calligrapher!

By sunshine |

It's a very quiet street, perfect for a leisurely stroll through the old streets. There are many small restaurants where you can relax. As for the attractions, everyone has their own opinions.

By Greater Freedom |

The "Sage of Calligraphy" is Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His story is widely circulated in Shaoxing, and the "Sage of Calligraphy's Hometown" is built around the relics of Shaoxing, integrating several related attractions into one scenic area, including the Jiezhu Temple, the Tishan Pavilion, the Ink Pond, the Goose Pond, the Wenbi Tower, and the Tin Art Museum.

The park is quite large, and there is a mountain to climb up to see the Wenbi Tower and the Tin Art Museum. However, people in Shaoxing are lazy, and the museum was closed before 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

Behind the former residence of the Sage of Calligraphy is Jishan Mountain. There is an ancient tower on Jishan Mountain, but you can only view it from a distance. I don’t know where to climb it.

Literati and poets flocked to it in admiration, but tourists like me, after taking a quick look, could not see the charm of the great master Wang Xizhi's calligraphy. With my weak calligraphy skills, I am just a passing visitor.

By Silent Valley Facing the Wind |

The hometown of the now-named "Sage of Calligraphy" can be visited as an old neighborhood. Crossing the Tishan Bridge and visiting the Jiezhu Temple, this route is not crowded, and many places still retain their original flavor.

By Car |

The commercial residential area is still unique and not crowded, so it's nice to stroll around. The rice wine popsicles vary in price, but I really enjoyed them; they tasted great. Tishan Bridge and Duopo Lane are more about history. While there's nothing much to see, it's a great experience to take the kids on a historical tour.

We took a Shaoxing rickshaw to the old city of Shaoxing. Well, how should I put it? (It looked like they were pedaling hard, but I could have bought tickets online for 40 yuan per person. He took me to the ticket office and charged 60 yuan per person. Haha, then he said he would pay me 40 yuan and wouldn't let me buy online. I agreed 😯, but then I looked online and it seemed 20 yuan per person was fine 😈). But I didn't mind, complain, or feel any regret. This is probably the best thing I've gotten from traveling around the world (maybe it's just my age). I loved the calligraphy on the walls of the old alleys in Shaoxing, the former residence of the Sage of Calligraphy. Although it wasn't written by Wang Xizhi, for someone who doesn't understand calligraphy, it didn't detract from the artistic conception.

Yay! The entire hometown of the calligrapher is like a small town in the south of the Yangtze River. It's very pleasant to walk around! It's worth a visit! ;D

Calligraphy has always been a cultural heritage that the Chinese are proud of, but with the development of society and technology, calligraphy has become less popular. Shaoxing's Calligraphy Sage's Hometown, home to the "Calligraphy Sage" Wang Xizhi, takes three hours to explore. Self-driving tours can start with a visit to Lanting, located at the foot of Lanzhu Mountain in Lanting Town, 14 kilometers southwest of Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. It was the garden residence of Wang Xizhi, a renowned calligrapher and Internal History of Kuaiji during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It is a Jin Dynasty garden.

Then, return to Shaoxing City and visit Wang Xizhi's former residence at Jiezhu Temple. The nearby Wang Xizhi Exhibition Hall, located at 8 Xieqiao Lane, showcases masterpieces by Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, the "Two Wangs," as well as works by renowned calligraphers throughout history who were influenced by their work.

I had time so I went to the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy. It is a real old street with old houses in the center of Shaoxing and is well preserved.

The Shaoxing Calligraphy Sage's Hometown Historical Block is the area in Shaoxing city with the most complete preservation of historical features. It is the hometown of Shaoxing celebrities such as the "Calligraphy Sage" Wang Xizhi and the "Academic Leader" Cai Yuanpei, who influenced the progress of Chinese culture. It is also a holy place for studying for famous scholars of past dynasties such as Liu Zongzhou and Huang Zongxi.

The mottled walls here remind me of Penang.

I like the old feeling of the building

There are many former residences of celebrities here, so from time to time there are words or poems written by them on the walls.

You can get to the river from the main road across the small bridge. There are many cafes and B&Bs on both sides of the river, but there are still many residents living there.

I really like the B&B here! If I come again, I will definitely choose a B&B to stay in.

By Yuwei |

I spent my lunch break meeting clients at the scholar's hometown, where typical houses with small bridges and flowing water, quaint and charming, are still inhabited and full of life. Amidst the bustle, a subtle tranquility emanates, revealing Shaoxing's rich cultural heritage. The poetry and songs that can be found everywhere, and the delicious food I occasionally glimpse, have all made me fall in love with this place. I enjoy taking walks here and staying for a few days. The city is too noisy, but watching my grandparents basking in the sun brings a sense of peace and tranquility.

By Amoer |

Personally, I think it is more interesting than Lu Xun's hometown.

This is the first scenic spot I visited in Shaoxing. There were very few people there in the morning. I walked around for a while and felt it was just average.

I went to the hometown of a scholar to experience the atmosphere of the literati. To be honest, I don't know much about calligraphy, so I didn't really understand it, but I loved the atmosphere. The place was full of the flavor of the Jiangnan water town, and to live up to the name of the calligrapher, you can see calligraphy on the walls everywhere, which was quite interesting. I was traveling with an elementary school student, so I made a travel guide before leaving. I acted as a guide and told stories during the tour, but forgive me, I'm really amateur. After reading my own travel guide, I found it very informative. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell a story as well as the guide, and the child didn't listen with much relish. Also, because I had a child with me, I woke up late in the afternoon and arrived at the scenic area a little after 3 o'clock. The child was always complaining about the heat and being tired, so we didn't go to places like the Wenbi Tower and the Xi Art Museum. After just a quick walk around, it was almost 5 o'clock, and the museums were closing one after another, which was not very enjoyable. There are many small shops selling wooden products on the street. Finally, I couldn't resist the temptation of handmade products. I like this kind of handmade products. I think they are more humane and have stories than machine carvings. Compared with the molds for making pastries, I chose a wooden seal. I like it very much, but it was a bit tragic after I came back. Because there were some grains on the wood cutting, it was estimated that the surface was not polished. The printed words and yin and yang faces were vague and could not be seen completely. They were also very fuzzy. Oh, I should have bought a pastry mold earlier. Haha

There is actually nothing to see in the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy. There are only some small attractions in the ancient town. Some attractions are not open to the public, which is a bit bad. I came here specifically to play, but there are still some attractions that are not open.

By Ning Xiaoxin |

Although both are hometowns, this place is clearly fundamentally different from Lu Xun's hometown. Strolling through the streets and alleys, you don't even notice it's a scenic spot. It's mostly just ordinary homes, and even the small shops nearby are like those little shops from my childhood—no frills, just selling everyday items. Compared to Lu Xun's hometown, I prefer the more natural and down-to-earth atmosphere here.

By Gao (high) |

There is no entrance fee for walking in the old street. If you go inside the house, you will need to pay an entrance fee.

By Black Horse |

Walking from Xiaoshan Street to Jishan Street (a pedestrian street), you'll find the "Hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy." Standing at the entrance to Jishan Street, you can see the Wenbi Tower in Jishan Park from afar, complementing the "Hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy." Jishan Street is a wide bluestone pavement, lined with low, cramped houses and shops with various signs. It has a somewhat ancient feel, not too commercial, and not very crowded with tourists.

We strolled along the stream, passed the "Xianning Bridge", "Jifang Bridge" in turn, and returned to the "Tishan Bridge". In this small alley that has not yet been commercially developed, the original appearance of the ancient water town is still well preserved, with ancient gates, lanes, stone bridges and flowing water, traditional neighborhoods, and Shaoxing's most distinctive black boats. You can find them here. Strolling on this wind and rain-resistant stone road, you can appreciate the purest taste of old Shaoxing, as mellow and long-lasting as Shaoxing rice wine.

I like it inexplicably and can't help lingering here... All of this is subject to the premise that you must not come during the peak tourist season. Once there are too many people, all the feelings will change!

The ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River are all similar, the only difference is that there is no entrance fee, and life and attractions are integrated together.

By Estella |

An unexpected bonus. Shaoxing is truly beautiful. It's free of the hustle and bustle and commercialism of the southern water towns. Ordering a cup of tea with a friend, watching the flowing river and the smoke curling from the homes on the other side, it's a truly tranquil experience.

By Mouse Falls in Love with Cat |

The attractions in the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy are not worth visiting, and the water in the ink pool is also very dirty, but it feels good to walk in the undeveloped ancient town, watching the old people chatting and playing chess, and not encountering many tourists.

Originally, I was going to find Cai Yuanpei's former residence according to the combined ticket, but I ended up walking to the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy. It felt like a large old district with many stores selling everything. Of course, there was also a workshop producing Shaoxing's specialty rice wine. If I walked around carefully, it would probably take quite a while.

Uh, the previous article was about Cangqiao, which was the wrong place. This one is about the Saint of Calligraphy.

If you have enough time, you can take more turns, maybe two or three hours;

There are old streets and alleys inside, and there are still residents living there, so it is not very commercialized and is still very nice;

It happened to rain when I went there, which was cool and suitable for the scene. The scenery was beautiful. Friends who like this kind of quaint, old town scenery should not miss it.

Personally, I think it is more worth visiting than the street in Lu Xun's hometown. It only takes a few hours to visit Lu Xun's hometown and get a general understanding of it. After all, such places still need someone who understands history to explain them to be more interesting.

By Daningning (Shenyang) |

It feels very ancient. Living here on two floors and doing some sitting on the balcony is really a good place for retirement. There are places with deep cultural heritage everywhere, and various saints gather here.

By If Qinglian |

Because of the story of Wang Xizhi and the ink pond, I took my child to visit the hometown of the calligrapher. Whether he understands it or not, I hope the story of the ink pond and this pool of ink-like water will leave some mark in his heart.

By Black and White_Scholar |

The commercial atmosphere is not very strong. It feels even better than Cangqiao Street. The attractions are very scattered and not very interesting. In fact, it is more appropriate not to buy a ticket. It is a very original living area. There is a Yuejiu workshop inside where you can visit and make rice wine. The wine tastes good too.

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy has many attractions. An hour or so passed by while walking around.

Strictly speaking, this is not a tourist attraction. It has a strong sense of life and is an old house where real Shaoxing people live.

By Lost McDull |

As soon as I walked into the alley, I fell deeply in love with this place. Everything is so quiet and peaceful, with a strong sense of life. The rhythm of life here is not disturbed at all because it is a tourist attraction.

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is nestled among a vast expanse of ancient dwellings at the southern foot of Jishan Mountain. It stretches from Zhongxing Road in the east to Jiefang Road in the west, North Huancheng Road in the north, and Shengli Road in the south. Its four streets and six alleys are home to numerous historical sites. The narrow alleyways, flowing water, whitewashed walls and black tiles, and bluestone pavements epitomize the history and culture of Shaoxing. The former residences of the calligrapher Wang Xizhi and educator Cai Yuanpei, as well as Tishan Bridge and Taimen, are located here. Compared to other scenic spots, the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is surprisingly less crowded. It was drizzling, and pedestrians were few and far between, with only a few elderly people passing by. The houses are relatively low, imbued with a lively urban atmosphere, and the residents are mostly elderly and relaxed. As I walked by, I felt completely untouched. You can also take a rickshaw ride here, where the driver will offer a guided tour while you admire the scenery, but if you have more time, you'd better explore the area on foot.

By Yunbing|smile |

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is the most well-preserved historical area in Shaoxing. The entire street is still very charming and full of cultural atmosphere, but coupled with the busy pedestrians and various shops, there is always a sense that something is wrong.

By Write and Draw |

We took the bus to Songmei Bridge and walked back a few steps to the ancient streets of the calligraphy master's hometown. This is a relatively down-to-earth residential area, where you can still see the pure life of Jiangnan residents. Uncles chatting on the street corner after washing mops, aunties passing through the Moon Cave Gate on their way home from buying breakfast dough sticks, women washing clothes by the not-so-clean river, office workers emerging from the alleys on electric scooters, dogs roaming around happily, and a few tourists taking photos... Perhaps it was still early (just after 8 o'clock), so the area was mostly deserted. We wandered through a few alleys, passing by Wang Xizhi's former residence, Jiezhu Temple, the Ink Pond, Tishan Bridge, Tishan Pavilion, and Duopo Lane (I won't introduce all of these one by one, as the guidebook has too many to list). We didn't find the legendary Bifei Lane, so we took a few photos by Tishan Bridge.

By Goodbye_Old Times___ |

We didn't know much about the accommodation in Shaoxing, but we liked it very much. It was very quiet and the environment was clean. There were almost no people after 4 pm. There were many inns and hostels around, which was very artistic. It was suitable for a walk together in the evening.

After visiting Lu Xun's hometown, we drove to the nearby hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy. There was a rather amusing anecdote: I was following the navigation system to the Sage's hometown and accidentally strayed into a narrow lane on the pedestrian street. The road was so narrow that even tricycles couldn't pass. I thanked the locals profusely and parked my car on the only wider street corner, feeling relieved. The Sage of Calligraphy's hometown is currently the most well-preserved historical area in downtown Shaoxing. It's home to renowned Shaoxing figures like Wang Xizhi, the "Sage of Calligraphy," and Cai Yuanpei, the "Master of Academics," who influenced the development of Chinese culture. It's also the place where renowned scholars from past dynasties, such as Liu Zongzhou and Huang Zongxi, studied. (During our one or two days stay in Shaoxing, in addition to the rickshaw drivers, several locals have recommended this "hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy") In the ancient town, there are many markers related to Wang Xizhi's historical stories, such as "Tishan Bridge", "Tishan Pavilion", "Duopo Lane", "Duopo Cake", the "Ink Pool" where Wang Xizhi washed his brush, "Jiezhu Temple", etc. We used cameras to capture the beautiful scenery of the ancient water town in the south of the Yangtze River, and reviewed and learned cultural and historical knowledge during the trip. It was very pleasant.

The Calligraphy Sage's Hometown Historical District has a flavor similar to that of Suzhou in Shaoxing. This may be because both cities have protected their ancient cities very well. Especially in the Calligraphy Sage's Hometown near Zhongxing Road, there is a small river on one side of the road, which gives the feeling of the west of Guanqian Street in Suzhou.

The customs and practices of the Jiangnan water town are displayed here without reservation. Compared with Wuzhen, I prefer Shaoxing.

If I were to ask which of Shaoxing's many historical and cultural districts is the best, I would recommend the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy. First, I went to the Jiezhu Lecture Temple. The ticket was five yuan, but after entering, I found that the statue of Wang Xizhi was not enshrined in the Maitreya Temple, but in the temples around the world. This is what makes it different.

This is a very distinctive landscape with the characteristics of a Jiangnan water town. The ancient Shaoxing houses are built along the river, and several ancient bridges with a thousand-year history reveal that this was once a famous historical and cultural city.

The hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy is tucked away in a residential area, its streets quiet and untouched by commercial life. I love these vibrant streets. Walking slowly along the long, bluestone streets, I see the Ink Pond, the Tishan Bridge, the Penfly Lane, the Jiezhu Temple, and the Qianye Guild Hall, and replay the scenes of Wang Xizhi practicing calligraphy in his youth.

Next to Cai Yuanpei's former residence is the Calligraphy Sage's Hometown Old Street, another lively old street with old ladies basking in the sun, people washing clothes by a well, carpentry shops, and shops repairing old appliances. However, this street has been developed into a tourist attraction and is not as pristine and natural as the old street next to Xiegong Bridge.

The Calligraphy Sage's Hometown Historic District houses the former residences of Wang Xizhi and Cai Yuanpei. The Jiezhu Temple, Mochi, Tishan Bridge and other former residences are hidden among a large number of ancient houses and can only be discovered if you look for them patiently. Most of the buildings in the scenic area are quaint buildings facing the river, with the river in front and the streets behind, which have well preserved the original appearance of the ancient buildings.

The hometown of the calligrapher is said to be the former residence of Wang Xizhi. There are not many people here, and you can see some old things when you walk in.

Old neighborhood

A-Lian and I ran breathlessly until we reached Shuangmei Bridge, the hometown of the calligrapher. The bridge's beauty instantly caught our eye. It was early morning, and the air was still lightly misty. The bridge was deserted, with quiet water flowing beneath it, flanked by quiet homes. Occasionally, an elderly person would come out to wash something in the water. It was a truly wonderful experience.

Compared with Lu Xun's hometown, this place is like a paradise. There are not many tourists, and most of them are local residents.

Walking slowly, you can see some of the stories of the Calligraphy Saint, such as the Fan Bridge, the Flying Brush, the Ink Pond, and the Jiezhu Temple. These are all very interesting stories. You can see that although the Calligraphy Saint is honored as a saint, when he was young, he was more like an ordinary person with flesh and blood and temper like us.

Take a short detour through the hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy, from Tishanqiao Street across Zhongxing Road to Hugongdian Street, and continue south to Changqiao Street. This delightful alley, hidden amidst the urban life, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of tourist attractions. The street is dotted with old-fashioned shops, displaying signs like "Tailor," "Tobacco and Alcohol," "Tea," and "Barber." Paintings promoting traditional virtues, depicting ladies, flowers, and birds, and freehand landscapes, can be found everywhere on the walls of the neighborhood, imbued with a rich cultural atmosphere.

It took me a while to find it. It's a small road that's easy to miss. There are fewer and fewer stone roads like this in the city. It feels good. Tricycles shuttle between alleys, giving me a sense of shuttle.
