Explore the intricate carvings and architectural details of the Dongshan Carved Building, which features traditional Chinese artistry. Enjoy walking through its beautifully preserved rooms and courtyards, and learn about the history of the building and its significance in local culture.

Located in Dongshan Town, Dongting Lake, Suzhou, the Dongshan Carved Tower is known as the "First Tower in Jiangnan" for its exquisite carvings and ingenious structure. Also known as the "Spring Tower," it's a reference to the Qing Dynasty poet Yu Yue's line, "Flowers fall, but spring remains." It's a representative work of architectural sculpture from Xiangshan, Wuxian County (now part of Wuzhong, Suzhou). The wood reliefs, created by Xiangshan woodcarver Zhou Yunlong, offer a rare opportunity to study the traditions, local schools, and techniques of modern Chinese folk sculpture.
The doors and windows of the main hall are carved with depictions of the 24 filial piety stories, such as "Carrying Oranges to Serving Mother" and "Entertaining Parents with Colorful Plays," as well as inspirational stories like "Reading with Fireflies at Night" and "Grinding a Pestle on the Road." The thresholds are inlaid with bat-shaped eyelets, symbolizing "Stepping on Blessings." Stepping on this blessing, one enters the main hall of the carved building, known as the Phoenix Hall, because it features 172 phoenixes, or 86 pairs. In the local dialect, "eight and six" is a homophone for "hundreds of joy," symbolizing a century of happiness. The second floor of the carved building houses the living room, study, and bedroom. A plaque in the center of the living room reads "Spring in the Building," the original name of the carved building, meaning "Spring always exists in a sunny house."
