It was built by Lu Jiemei, a Daotai from Anhui during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty and named " Banyuan " . Because it is located to the north of Shi's Banyuan in Cangmi Lane, it is commonly known as " Bei Banyuan " .
The garden is located east of the residence, with a pond in its center. Surrounding it are a boat hall, a waterside pavilion, a curved corridor, and a semi-pavilion. Most of the buildings feature the " half " element. The two-and-a-half-story pavilion with double eaves in the northeastern part of the garden is unique among Suzhou gardens.
