Introducing Zhongshan Wharf

Zhongshan Wharf is located on the south bank of the Yangtze River in Xiaguan, Gulou District, Nanjing. It is also known as Xiaguan Wharf and formerly known as Capital Wharf. It is a ferry wharf with the "Ningpu Line" ferry running to Pukou Wharf on the opposite bank all year round.

The history of docks on the Xiaguan River can be traced back to the military dock at Baishipu, built in the Laohushan area during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. By the Southern Song Dynasty, Longwan Ferry, one of the six Yangtze River ferry crossings, served as a transportation hub for grain transport. Modern ferry transportation didn't begin until 1910, the second year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty, with the completion of the Jinpu Railway. The Pukou Market Bureau, with private funding, began operating a route from Xiaguan to Pukou, known as the "Guanpu Line."

In 1928, to ensure the smooth execution of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's burial ceremony, the Nationalist government decided to construct a wharf on the Xiaguan River to receive his coffin. This wharf was named the Capital Wharf of the Jinpu Railway. After the ceremony, the Xiaguan wharf where the coffin landed was renamed Zhongshan Wharf in his memory, a name that remains in use today.
