Introducing Yijiangmen

Yijiang Gate, a gate added to Nanjing's Ming Dynasty city wall during the Republic of China era, is located in the northwest section of the city wall in present-day Nanjing's Gulou District, spanning two hills. The famous Zhongshan Avenue and Zhongshan North Road enter Nanjing from here, serving as a crucial thoroughfare connecting the city with Xiaguan Wharf (now Zhongshan Wharf).

In 1921 (the 10th year of the Republic of China), the city wall was opened, initially as a single-arch gate. It served as a key access point for traffic from Zhongshan Wharf and Xiaguan Railway Station. It was named Hailing Gate because its construction supervisor, Han Guojun, the Civil Affairs Minister of Jiangsu Province, was a native of Taizhou, formerly known as "Hailing." In July 1928 (the 17th year of the Republic of China), the Nationalist government renamed Hailing Gate Yijiang Gate. In 1929, in preparation for the enshrinement ceremony, it was renovated into a three-arch, multi-span, double-arched gate, the first three-arched gate in Nanjing. In April of the same year, Dai Jitao, President of the Examination Yuan of the Nationalist government, inscribed the plaque "Yijiang Gate."

On April 23, 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army won the Battle of Crossing the Yangtze River and entered Nanjing through Yijiang Gate. In 1984, Deng Xiaoping inscribed the tower, dedicating it to the Yangtze River Crossing Victory Memorial Hall. In April 2009, the memorial hall was relocated and rebuilt.
