Hangzhou Museum, formerly the Hangzhou History Museum, is located in Wushan, a scenic area of West Lake in Hangzhou, adjacent to Wushan Square and the Hefang Street Historical and Cultural District. It is a comprehensive humanities museum that showcases the historical changes of Hangzhou and its collection of urban cultural relics. It is one of the most influential museums in Zhejiang Province.
The museum's collection exceeds 10,000 items, encompassing a wide range of cultural relics, including ceramics, calligraphy and paintings, jade, seals, coins, and stamps. Its most treasured item, a Warring States crystal cup, is the largest early crystal artifact unearthed in China to date . In 2002 , it was included in the first list of 64 items (sets) of precious cultural relics prohibited from exhibition abroad by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
The exhibition hall is divided into three main sections: "Treasures of Hangzhou - Exhibition of Fine Cultural Relics from the Museum's Collection," "Most Memories of Hangzhou - Exhibition of Hangzhou's History and Culture," and a mobile exhibition hall. The "Treasures of Hangzhou" exhibition series showcases exquisite unearthed cultural relics from Hangzhou over the years, immovable cultural relics from Hangzhou, exquisite calligraphy and paintings from the museum's collection, rare stationery items, and stamps. "Most Memories of Hangzhou" complements Hangzhou's 8,000-year-old rich heritage. Drawing on historical materials, evidence, individuals, and events, it charts the city's development through the centuries.
