Zhudi Village, a remote village near Lugu Lake, is home to 30 households and is known as the Land of Daughters. Little developed and rarely visited, Zhudi Village's pristine natural resources are well-preserved. Entering the village, one is struck by the distinctly rustic atmosphere. The paths are narrow, many still dirt, and each household has its own independent courtyard, neatly arranged along the paths. Most of the houses are made of wood, giving them a primitive, simple feel and a unique ethnic character.
While monogamy is now universally practiced, the Mosuo people of Lugu Lake Pan still maintain the custom of "walking marriage," where men and women do not marry, and unions are voluntary and separation is free. This once isolated and backward village garnered global attention thanks to Yang Erche Namu's 1997 autobiography, "Out of the Kingdom of Daughters." The book exposed the beautiful Lugu Lake, the mysterious Kingdom of Daughters, and the Mosuo people's practice of walking marriage. The unique Mosuo culture attracts tourists from both China and abroad, and more and more people are visiting the Mosuo tribe to explore the secrets of this land.
