Introducing Hongshan Benzhu Temple

Hongshan Benzhu Temple is the most culturally distinctive Benzhu Temple near Erhai Lake, located in the northern bay of Shuanglang Town, Dali City. The temple's enshrined Benzhu are three generations of Nanzhao military generals, Wang Sheng, Wang Le, and Wang Lekuan, who defeated the Tang generals Xianyu Zhongtong and Li Mi during the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty. After being enshrined as Benzhu, they were given the title "Red Male Spirit Zhaowei Guangjing Emperor." The date of its construction is unknown. The temple consists of a gatehouse and stage, east and west wings, a main hall, and an east side hall. Facing Erhai Lake and overlooking Cangshan Mountain, the scenery is breathtaking. The Hongshan Benzhu Festival takes place annually from the 14th to the 16th day of the fourth lunar month, when fishing boats gather and crowds of people flock.

The Hongshan Benzhu Temple Fair evolved into a cultural and tourism-integrated festival, and later became the Erhai Lake Opening Festival. Since 2008, the Dali Municipal Government has held the "Erhai Lake Opening Festival" annually on the Hongshan Peninsula.

The villages along the western shore of Erhai Lake are known for their "sea-playing" festivals. These festivals last a month, from the 23rd day of the seventh lunar month to the 23rd day of the eighth lunar month. The largest event is held in Cai Village on the 8th day of the eighth lunar month. On this day, many surrounding villages gather their boats in the waters near Cai Village. Enjoying wine, food, music, and boat races, the boats stretch for over ten miles, attracting nearly ten thousand spectators. The Qing Dynasty's "Yunnan History" records: "On the 23rd day of the seventh lunar month, a dragon-god race is held on the banks of the Erhai River. By the end of the day, yachts of all sizes gather within a hundred miles to pray at the Erhai Lake Shrine. Lights and candles line the sky, and a mist of pepper and orchids hangs thickly... People of all ages, both rich and poor, men and women, come out to enjoy the festival."
