Located in Jiuxiang Scenic Area, the Underground Inverted Stone Forest, formerly known as the Bat Cave, earned its name due to the stalactites within the cave, which dangle upside down from the ceiling, resembling bats. The entire landscape appears to have escaped the influence of gravity, growing in a peculiar pattern. From a distance, it resembles an upside-down stone forest, hence the name.
Almost all downward-growing stalactites in the world are vertical. Only the stalactites in Jiuxiang Bat Cave seem to defy gravity, forming zigzags and a charmingly unadorned beauty. But why do these stalactites bend? The reason is that the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the cave creates winds with different directions. Furthermore, these stalactites have capillaries that transport water, forming droplets. As the calcium carbonate is about to precipitate, the wind blows it away from its vertical direction, creating the zigzag shape.
The subtropical plateau monsoon climate; the air in the cave where the underground inverted stone forest is located is fresh and smooth, and the temperature is cool and pleasant, as if it has natural air conditioning, making it suitable for travel in all seasons.
