It was the capital of the Jin Dynasty from 1115 to 1234, and is the only Jin Dynasty capital site that has been relatively well preserved to date.
The Meridian Gate of the Imperial City and the ruins of the palace buildings have been well preserved to this day, and the ruins of the outer city walls, barbican, battlements, corner towers and moat still exist.
It was the early capital of the Jin Empire established by the Jurchens, and served four emperors: Jin Taizu, Taizong, Xizong, and Hailing Wang.
It served as the political, military, economic and cultural center of the Jin Dynasty for 38 years.
