Central China Normal University is located on Guizi Mountain on the shore of South Lake in Wuchang, Wuhan, Hubei Province. It is an institution of higher learning with a long history. Its roots can be traced back to 1871 when the American Episcopal Church founded Wenhua Academy in Tanhualin, Wuhan.
After many successive changes, it became the university department of Wenhua Academy in 1903, renamed Zhonghua University in 1912, established as the public Huazhong University in 1951, restructured into Huazhong Higher Normal School in 1952, renamed Huazhong Normal College in 1953, and finally renamed Huazhong Normal University in 1985. Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the school.
