Rua do Fulong is an ancient street in the central district of the Macau Peninsula, dating back several hundred years and once a thriving commercial area. The buildings on Rua do Fulong are the best-preserved example of a Chinese brothel complex, holding great historical value. It is also one of the birthplaces of Macau's gaming industry.
Fulongxin Street used to be divided into two sections: upper and lower. The upper section was home to brothels and teahouses, numbering approximately 60 at its peak. Six of the most famous were Yaxian, Wing Chun, Liushang, Honglou, Jinghua, and Yulan. The lower section, home to smoking rooms and restaurants, was known as "Men's Play Street."
Although Fulongxin Street is not as prosperous as it once was, the numerous two-story buildings from the late Qing Dynasty still remain. The lattice window panels, doorways and metal door panels on the buildings are painted bright red, which is not only eye-catching but also contrasts with the gray walls, giving it an antique feel that is pleasing to the eye.
