Introducing Nanhu Academy

Nanhu Academy, located in one of Hongcun's most scenic spots, faces south and offers expansive views. In the late Ming Dynasty, the people of Hongcun built six private schools on the north bank of Nanhu Lake, known as the " Six Yihu Academy . " During the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty ( 1814 ), the six academies were merged and rebuilt into a single, large-scale private school, named " Yiwen Family Academy , " or " Nanhu Academy . "

The academy, a historic building steeped in Huizhou architectural style, covers an area of over ten mu (approximately 10 mu) and borders a serene lake. Inside, there are exquisite rockeries and a century-old juniper pine tree. The academy consists of six sections: Zhidao Hall, Wenchang Pavilion, Qimeng Pavilion, Huiwen Pavilion, Wanghu Tower, and Gion.

The academy faces a serene lake in front, and is flanked by terraced buildings to the rear. The whitewashed walls and black tiles, the clear water, and the blue sky complement each other beautifully. The academy's main hall is majestic and imposing, and its well-preserved gatehouse bears the original golden plaque inscribed with the words " Yiwen Family School , " inscribed by Liang Tongshu, a renowned calligrapher and lecturer at the Hanlin Academy during the Qing Dynasty , at the age of 93. To the west stands the " Lake Viewing Pavilion , " with its curved roof and windows facing South Lake. A horizontal plaque with the words " Lake and Mountain Scenery " hangs above . Climbing high, one can take in the panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

Historically, this was also a place where officials and scholars gathered to give lectures. Wang Kangnian, who served as a secretary in the Qing Cabinet, and Wang Daxie, who served as the minister to Britain and Japan and acting prime minister during the Republic of China period, all studied here in their childhood.
