Introducing Canal

The Hongcun Canal was built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty ( 1403-1423 AD ) and has a history of more than 500 years. It is more than 1,200 meters long and flows around every household, providing clean water all year round.

The ancestors of the people of Hongcun were very good at making use of natural stream water. They built a stone dam on the Yixi River above Hongcun, and used stones to build an artificial canal several meters wide. They took advantage of the terrain difference to bring a stream of clear water into the village.

The canal meanders through the halls and houses, passes through Yue Marsh, and finally flows into Nanhu Lake. From Nanhu Lake, it irrigates farmland and fruit trees, and flows back into Suixi River, nourishing the whole village with coolness, making the quiet mountain village dynamic, and creating a good environment where " there is no need to worry about the long way to the stream for washing and fetching water, as there is a clear spring in front of every house . "
