Introducing Guozhuang

Guozhuang, a garden in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, is located beside Wolong Bridge on Xishan Road in Hangzhou. It is adjacent to Quyuan Fenghe Park, one of the ten scenic spots of West Lake. Originally named Duanyou Villa, it was built in 1907, the 33rd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty.

The garden is surrounded by winding corridors, flowing water, rockery, and clusters of flowers and trees. Along the pond are scenic spots such as "Fragrant Snow Divides Spring," "Inviting the Moon with the Wind," "Liangyi Pavilion," "Shangxin Yueyue," "Jingsu Pavilion," and "Rampant Spring Breeze." Guozhuang, with its elegant and refined design, rivals Suzhou's Master of the Nets Garden, but slightly surpasses it with its West Lake views. It is one of the best-preserved private gardens in Hangzhou and provides a valuable example for the study of Zhejiang-style gardens.

Lotus Pond

Guozhuang is located on the Yanggong Dike. Records indicate that it was first built during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty for silk merchant Song Duanyou, hence the name "Duanyou Villa." After the Song family fell into decline, it was sold to the Guo family of Fenyang, who renamed it "Fenyang Villa," more commonly known as "Guozhuang." The "Jiangnan Garden Records" describes it as "the most ancient and interesting of the Wulin ponds and pavilions."

Jingbiju

Guozhuang is divided into two parts, "Jingbi Ju" and "Yijing Tiankai", separated by "Liangyi Xuan" in the middle. It is a typical front-house and back-garden layout, with the front house being "Jingxin Ju".

Jingsu Pavilion

Guozhuang is elegant and clean, exquisite and delicate, and is embedded in the mountains and waters of West Lake. A small climber takes you to the "Chengfeng Yaoyue Pavilion" along the lake, where you can see the breeze blowing in the hazy sky and the rustling of autumn lotus flowers. You can row a boat on the lake and feel like you are in a painting. In the distance, the green mountains are lush and green, and the red plum blossoms on the shore are in bud, waiting to bloom. The lake waves merge, and the shadow of the tower can be found in the distance. At this time, the fragrance of Longjing tea wafts through the air, and people are slightly drunk.
