Sourdough Pancakes

We will be leaving our hotel in downtown on a Tuesday morning after 2 nights and driving to Soldotna on the first leg of our trip. Before leaving town we would like to have breakfast and then hit either Walmart or Fred Meyers on the south end of town for few supplies and fishing license.

We would like to find a good place for breakfast that is easy to reach but more importantly we would like to find a place that serves sourdough pancakes. We see Judy's Cafe does but we would have to back track a bit which of course is doable. Can anyone give us any other suggestions? Thank you.

Anchorage has several great breakfast spots, and sourdough pancakes are a popular local favorite. Since you’ll be heading south toward Soldotna and want to pick up supplies at Walmart or Fred Meyer, it’s ideal to choose a breakfast place that is convenient without too much backtracking.

Here are some recommended options for breakfast with sourdough pancakes in Anchorage:

  • Judy’s Cafe: Famous for sourdough pancakes, Judy’s is located slightly east of downtown. While it may require a short detour, it’s well worth it for the pancakes. The cafe opens early, making it possible to enjoy breakfast and continue your journey south.
  • Snow City Cafe: Downtown location, very popular with both locals and visitors. They serve a variety of pancakes, including sourdough on some days. It’s easy to reach from most downtown hotels and has a casual, friendly atmosphere.
  • Wild Scoops & Cafe: Located in midtown, this spot offers pancakes made from local ingredients. Check in advance to see if sourdough pancakes are on the menu for the day.
  • Front Street Cafe: Near downtown, they serve classic American breakfasts and often feature sourdough pancakes. Good option if you want minimal driving before heading south.

For your Walmart or Fred Meyer stop:

  • Fred Meyer South Anchorage: Conveniently located off the Seward Highway, easy to reach after breakfast in midtown or downtown. You can pick up groceries, fishing licenses, and any supplies before continuing south toward Soldotna.
  • Walmart Dimond Blvd: Also south of downtown, accessible from Seward Highway, and convenient for a quick stop on your way out of town.

Tips:

  • Consider calling ahead to the cafes to confirm that sourdough pancakes are available that morning.
  • Plan breakfast early to avoid peak hours, especially on a weekday, since these spots can get busy.
  • With either cafe choice, your route south via Seward Highway to Soldotna will remain straightforward.

Overall, Judy’s Cafe is the classic choice for sourdough pancakes, but Snow City Cafe and Front Street Cafe provide convenient alternatives closer to downtown. Either way, you can enjoy a satisfying breakfast and easily continue to pick up supplies before your road trip.
