Driving from Anchorage to Seward

Will be picking up rental car in Anchorage and driving to Seward next week. Looking for ideas on places to see/stops along the way. 2 adults in 60’s. Thank you!

The drive from Anchorage to Seward along the Seward Highway is one of the most scenic drives in Alaska, with stunning views of mountains, fjords, rivers, and wildlife. For two adults in their 60s, the route offers plenty of opportunities for short stops, sightseeing, and photo ops without feeling rushed.

The total drive is about 127 miles and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours without stops, but planning several stops along the way can turn it into a full, memorable day trip. The road is well-maintained, with plenty of pullouts for enjoying the scenery.

Recommended stops along the way include:

  • Beluga Point: A scenic overlook along Turnagain Arm, great for spotting beluga whales if you’re lucky and taking photos of the tidal flats and mountains.
  • Potter Marsh: A short boardwalk walk over wetlands, often with salmon, moose, and many bird species. Very accessible and not strenuous.
  • Girdwood: A charming mountain town about 40 miles south of Anchorage. Consider stopping for lunch or coffee. You can also take a short tram ride up Mount Alyeska for panoramic views if you like.
  • Bird Point: Another scenic pullout along Turnagain Arm, popular for stopping and stretching your legs while taking in the dramatic coastline views.
  • Kenai Mountains / Exit Glacier viewpoint: As you approach Seward, you can detour slightly into Kenai Fjords National Park to view Exit Glacier. The glacier is accessible via a short, easy walk to a viewpoint.

Other tips for your drive:

  • Leave Anchorage mid-morning to allow for leisurely stops and lunch in Girdwood.
  • Keep your camera ready for wildlife sightings – eagles, moose, Dall sheep, and even bears are occasionally spotted along the highway.
  • Plan for variable weather – layers are important and rain gear can come in handy.
  • Check road conditions and daylight hours, especially if driving in shoulder seasons.

Once in Seward, there are opportunities to explore the harbor, visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, or enjoy a short walk along the waterfront before your planned overnight stay. This route balances beautiful scenery, wildlife viewing, and comfortable driving for a memorable Alaska experience.
