Freedom trail - self guided or guided?

OK I have searched online and looked through here as well but still would like some advice on whether it's best to do the freedom trail as a self guided tour (purchasing the app for $10) or do one of the guided tours? Not sure which is best and it appears that NPS had closed?

The Freedom Trail in Boston is one of the city’s most iconic attractions, offering a walk through 16 historic sites over 2.5 miles. Deciding between a self-guided tour or a guided tour depends on your interests, pace, and the kind of experience you want.

Self-guided tours, especially using a paid app, can be a flexible option:

  • You can go at your own pace, spending more time at sites that interest you.
  • Apps often include historical context, images, and maps, which can be very educational.
  • It allows for spontaneity—you can stop for coffee, detours, or quick photos without feeling rushed.
  • Cost-effective—typically only the price of the app or printed guide.

Guided tours offer a different set of advantages:

  • Knowledgeable guides provide stories, anecdotes, and historical context that might not be available in apps or books.
  • Guides can answer questions on the spot and may take you to lesser-known spots along the trail.
  • Some tours include admission fees or perks for specific sites that a self-guided tour might not cover.
  • It can be more social and engaging if you enjoy interacting with others and hearing perspectives in real time.

Regarding the National Park Service (NPS): while certain NPS visitor centers or facilities along the Freedom Trail may be closed, the trail itself and most historic sites are still accessible. Many private companies and volunteer guides offer tours, so you can still get a guided experience even if NPS operations are limited.

In general:

  • If you prefer flexibility, independent exploration, and saving money, go with the self-guided app.
  • If you want richer storytelling, personal interaction, and structured learning, a guided tour is worth it.
  • Either option allows you to experience the full trail; it just depends on whether you want to walk at your own pace or benefit from a guide’s insight.

Many visitors choose a hybrid approach: start with a self-guided walk to get a feel for the trail, and then join a short guided segment at a few key sites for deeper context. This gives both flexibility and enriched historical understanding.
